Having watched One News last night where I heard Jacinda Ardern make the excuse that all the hard decisions she has made on Covid – 19 is the reason the polls haven’t been good for her, I couldn’t believe how arrogant she is.
Also in the same peice of news Jessica Mutch and Melissa Stokes showed their judgements in siding with the Prime Minister but politics are about honesty and if you look at this Government’s policy you would understand, with Three Waters , decisions on Maori Language and the separation of of the Health system giving Maori there own Health Board, wit also the millions the media have received to promote Labours agenda.
So if these Joun can see the facts because they are blinded by the Prime Minister’s popularity they have there head in the sand and can’t change there one sided view.

This is good because it finally looks like the Country as a whole have finally got sick of the lies.

  They may have been hard decisions for her, but it’s clear that the general public think they were the wrong ones.
  Rebellion is everywhere. A family member declared last week that she was damned if she was going to get a booster (the previous week I got a fierce lecture about my fate as long as I wan’t vaccinated EVEN ONCE!) and I was so taken aback that I forgot to ask why she had changed her mind.
  Yesterday, a small group (non-family) all agreed that if we got the sniffles, no-one would be getting a ‘test’.
  The result is that whereas a couple of weeks ago I was feeling like an outcast, now I’m feeling distinctly optimistic, and hopeful that sanity is beginning to prevail.

    No surprise that (probably) 100 percent of my friends and colleagues are vaccinated and most of them will get boosters. But in discussions, NONE of them plan to get tested if they get symptoms. For obvious reasons.
    
    Of course if we had these rapid tests we could get tested at home and take our own prudent isolation measures.
    
    I was listening to Dr John Campbell this morning (the COVID educator). He was scathing about this 14/24 day isolation rule. He pointed out that this would simply ensure that few people got tested.

      Facing the broad empirical data (science truth) about Omicron, why would any non vulnerable person not want to benefit from the natural immunity it affords (also to Delta), especially when considering the minimal health risk and generally cold like inconvenience?
      On the government isolation plan ( a malingerer’s dream) many people can’t afford to isolate that long, let alone want to be home detained during the summer. Yet the Omnicron data says an incubation period of 2-3 days!?
      This Government has again undermined business and societal confidence, making people reluctant to commit funds to make any reasonable plans.

        Well, to be honest I have no idea what it was declaring, other than fealty to the narrative of their paymasters. Some nonsense about how we can’t say it’s “mild” but “it’s definitely milder”. Another idiot said if he was faced with a choice of going into a room with Delta and a room with Omicron, he’d choose the room with Delta as the chances of getting it are less, even if the effects are more severe. I suppose nobody told this idiot that catching Omicron is not only highly likely to be asymptomatic or like a cold at worst, but it also gives you much better immunity against Delta.

On Covid she’s done nothing but follow the status quo: lockdowns and referral to experts. Now the Covid narrative is falling apart, both globally and domestically, shes found wanting.

      Sadly Don it turns out Klaus Schwab is more Dr Evil then Dr No and all his acolytes were not very well selected. Sure they might have believed in his agenda but they lacked the skills to implement it.
      They had at best 1 year while we were traumatised to do it but liked the absolute power too much and lacked the knowledge that this power would be fleeting as we woke up.

      If you read young Robert Kennedy’s book “The Real Anthony Fauci” you might suddenly notice that the NZ Government has been following the Fauci pandemic management plan to the letter. I had to stop reading when I realised that I could at one point substitute Ardern for Fauci.
      He is an evil, manipulative man, whom Kennedy describes as ‘charming’ so it’s not surprising that the likes of Ardern and Trudeau were easily convinced to follow the plan.

On Friday my close associate went to do a routine inspection. Bunch of gang members in house.

“Who are you?”

“We are house sitting for Bob.”

“Bob needs to notify us if you are house sitting.”

My close associate decides not to argue. Phones the police. She has them on speed dial.

Armed police evict the gang. Some had warrants for arrest. A couple ran off. House trashed.

Shortly after credible threats by phone to Kàinga Ora office. Locked down

Still no sign of Bob.

      BY: Serious questions:
      
      1) Do KO provide these people with self defence/conflict handling training?
      2) Do KO provide them with suitable equipment such as stab-proof vests?
      3) Do KO provide them with the psychological tools to feel safe doing this work?
      
      This is a serious H&S issue. An employer has the responsibility to provide both the equipment and training for a worker to be able to do their job safely, both physically and emotionally.
      
      If, heaven forbid, a worker gets harmed – which seems to be just a matter of time – then KO have failed.
      
      Unfortunately these organisations seem to put all the pressure on their workers with very little support. A similar thing happens with mental services nurses who are often beaten up by the patients. I know two who were beaten up then accused of not thinking of the needs of the patient who beat them up.
      
      When these large organisations fail, the people in the ivory towers that make the woke policies are never damaged. It is the people at the coal face.

        They get no physical protection like stab proof vests.
        
        See the problem is that the narrative is “these are nice people”. You can buy the house next door. But if they have the tenancy managers stab proof vests, that line would fall to pieces.
        
        They do get monthly meetings with a counsellor to talk through any issues.
        
        Basically, they have the police on speed dial.
        
        My concern is that my partner will encounter a meth head with a knife. It is only a matter of time before a KO manager is seriously injured or killed.
        
        On a positive note, my partner does get rewarded by helping people. There are perfect state house tenants who are grateful for the house. She has spent the last two years trying to put all the problem tenants together. But it is not always possible. For example the 501 deportees from Australia are top priority for a state house. And they are ALL trouble.

Middle class folks like me living in the leafy burbs hardly ever see a gang member except maybe in a group on the motorway and then stay well clear of them.

Luxon has higher approval rating than Ardern
From the 1 News article –
… Those polled were asked if they approved or disapproved of the way Ardern was handling her job as Prime Minister.

There is no ‘connecting’ question, like, “Do you think Luxon would perform better than Ardern, as Prime Minister?” – in whatever way you would word that to be neutral – so why the jump in logic, to in fact be illogical, to compare two actually unrelated separate questions about handling separate jobs?

With –
Jacinda Ardern: 52% approve, 37% disapprove
Christopher Luxon, 42% approve, 20% disapprove
– why not just add both percentages in each case and state 89% of voters express an opinion about Ardern and only 62% express an opinion about Luxon, so Ardern has a 27% higher interest rating?

Is the whole comparison not just fucking rubbish, of the type that the Labourless Government continually pulls, so much more so under Ardern’s Communications degrees of manipulation, that her rating is stink, all by itself, without the need of any erroneous comparison to Luxon.

  Yup. The questions around the opposition leader are pretty useless. Most of NZ has little or no knowledge of Luxon. I know who he is and have heard part of one speach. I have no idea if he would be good or bad as a leader. His results are more ‘I don’t like Labour / I do like National’.

    Well I stumbled on Gerard Otto’s Facebook page this morning. I thought I was reading a Monty Python skit. He referenced the Whoreald article on the weekend about Chris Bishop at home among other things that he perceives as media “bias” against Ardern!!!!

I’m sorry to email you over the weekend – but unfortunately, it’s rather urgent. Separatism is once again being forced upon New Zealanders through the second attempt to entrench unelected tribal appointees into local government.
The Government has been quietly in the process of passing the Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Bill. The Bill creates two unelected positions on the Council for Ngai Tahu to appoint. There is not even a requirement for a democratic process in the tribal appointees.
Seperate Maori wards is one thing, but to add unelected, unaccountable, iwi/race-based “representation” onto a regional council is totally inconsistent with any notion of democracy and equality.

Make no mistake, this is the big kahuna. The Bill entrenches tribalism at a council level in a way that directly undermines local democracy. If this Bill goes through, what’s to stop iwi groups around the country from demanding the same thing?
The Bill will inevitably lead to further unelected, unaccountable, race-based iwi appointments onto local councils.
The Government’s tried to pass this law before. Back in 2019 National, New Zealand First, and ACT MPs defeated the bill. But the Government now has the numbers, so this time only people power can force the Government to back down.

This Bill will result in a system that:
• is profoundly undemocratic
• increases bureaucracy and cost
• compromises environmental protections through conflicts of interest between Ngai Tahu business/property interests (as one of the largest business interests in the area) and the Regional Council
Ngai Tahu, as with all iwi, are already afforded special interest and consultation in all aspects of local and central government through existing legislation.
Entrenching affluent tribal elite into positions of power is not the process by which better outcomes are achieved for those in need. We need to acknowledge that this is now about the protection of tribal business interests at the cost of democracy

    I understand the reasoning even if I don’t agree with it. Submitting should be made as easy as possible and not allowing emailed submissions seems petty and self-serving.

      The country was at its most stable, and probably most progressive, in the 40 years to 1973 under Mohammed Zahir Shah. The restrictions of Islam would even then have seemed severe to New Zealanders, who also had more rigid views on society issues in those days.
      
      At least one former refugee to NZ from Afghanistan now has an important role in the Taliban (link below).
      
      Regardless, Charlotte Bellis is one brave reporter, and the MIQ system is crap.

        Charlotte Bellis was happy to go along with the media and support Ardern and Labour with their lockdown and MIQ policy – until reality hit and suddenly she was faced with the same intransigent and inhumane system many other Kiwis have had to face for over a year. Oh dear, this is what it takes for the scales to fall from their eyes. Her being personally impacted by a system others with less of a public profile have just had to ‘suck it up’.
        
        One benefit of her personal tragedy here is at least her public profile will get more attention, locally and internationally, than all the other 10’s of thousands of those who suffered before her.

      I think you’re still missing the point kowtow. We all know the Taliban are awful and Jacinda has a way to go to reach that level. However, Charlotte Bellis is pretty much a perfect facsimile of an Ardern fangirl and she has turned. When supporters turn it catches people’s attention. Ray Avery’s been making the same point for a while but with less impact, because he’s white, male and not young. Therefore his views can be ignored. Charlotte though is quite different.

    There are two completely separate issues here and they really should not be conflated:
    1) Bellis is a Taliban shill. It is hypocritical of her to flip-flop to The West Is the Best as soon as she’s pregnant.
    
    2) MIQ is an awful system that has little merit and is extremely poorly managed.
    
    When we’re discussing the MIQ part then we can put Bellis’ shilling for the Taliban to the side. It is not really relevant.
    
    Bellis says that Cindy would not apply the MIQ rules to herself. She is correct in that. Cindy changes the rules for her friends.
    
    For example, they made a special “experimental” route for people to self isolate at home. It was used to get Jimmy Shaw and his entourage home without MIQ, then was quietly shelved.
    
    That is corruption.
    
    This special rules for Cindy’s mates nonsense has been going on from the start:

      MIQ is a symptom not the cause of the problem.
      As rightly pointed out cmm Ardern and her masters and the entire govt who made these terrible decisions are accountable and responsible for the mess that is MIQ.
      
      The worst thing to happen to NZ in my lifetime is this.
      
      NZers divided by rules that make no sense and the majority of kiwis are happy to follow the rules even though they know they are immoral, irrational and evil.
      
      It is easier of course to comply than lose face, lose “mana”, respect and be shamed for taking a stand against the Empress new clothes.
      
      Easier to “just” wear a mask, scan the thing, get the jab than be treated as a criminal, worse a traitor to the country you lived in and for.
      
      Easier to not lose your job or lose your business but say that’s ok it’s for the “greater good”.
      
      Easier to take the subsidy and just be quiet.
      
      NZers now have to take a look in the mirror.
      What is “this is us?” even mean.
      Look at yourself, is your integrity higher than your pragmatism?
      What is your red line?
      What are your non-negotiables?
      If the govt ask you to tell on a neighbor or a friend or a family member for the greater good?
      Will you?

        I will not comply with any of it.
        I rarely go to shops, the guy in Kathmandu today asked after me as i swept through the door “had i signed in”; without looking back i said “we are good thanks” and continued on. Simple as that.
        
        I have not been anywhere that requires a vax pass. I have still been eating out on occasion, just takes a bit more scouting.
        
        I called the bluff at the organisation i volunteer at. I am valuable to them, but the only unvaccinated volunteer (out of close to 100). I said I will not support an organisation that support this division, they have decided not to mandate.
        
        I quit my sport group after one of them had a hissy fit about an unvacced person doing outdoor (non contact) sport in the group. I have just rejoined after the remainder of the group asked me to, and indicated they will stand up if that conversation happens again.
        
        I have not yet had to lose any work (self employed). But if it comes to it, I will have no qualms. I have saved so i’m in a position to do this.
        
        Yes, my integrity is more important to me than whether i can have a latte when i want.

      When Red Cross gets $3M from Cindystan, then they know they have to pay a “tax” on that and the tax that Red Cross has to pay will depend on how much money they think they can gouge.

Yesterday I received a 10 page document detailing the protocols in place under ‘Red’ at one of the primary schools I am contracted to. What a ridiculous shambles of a dog’s breakfast, what a farce, what an unenforceable set of pointless rules and regulations have been set in place by the MOH and MOE. One very minor guideline is sufficient to indicate the absurdity of the entire situation. Although Yr 4 pupils must wear masks, if those Yr 4 pupils are in a composite class with Yr 3 pupils they don’t have to wear masks. I predict a great number of anxious and confused children, and plenty of stressed teachers in our primary schools these coming weeks.

        My understanding is Mask exemption is self-declared. Given medical privacy it is not possible to police. One simply states I am exempt. If questioned then you politely point out that is a matter of medical privacy. Shops etc have a responsibility to check that you are exempt, but no authority to police. This is all on the MOH website.
        
        Mask exemption documents are not required to be mask exempt. So if your kids are confident in claiming exemption then they don’t need to wear a mask.

As things are, she’s not putting her baby first.

A final thought: for someone who’s a clued-up reporter, her lack of insight into the reality of MIQ until it hits her personally is astounding.

  Charlotte Bellis may not be everyone’s cup of tea: to some people she is selfish, hypocritical and manipulative.
  However, she is a New Zealand citizen.
  
  And New Zealand citizens have the right to leave New Zealand to pursue their personal dreams and vocations and therefore to enjoy freedoms which are not always available to other nationalities.
  She can live wherever she chooses, travel , and work at whatever she likes.
  She can live in what some of us consider unsavoury places and work for what some of us consider to be unsavoury organisations.
  We have, until very recently, all been able to do so.
  
  As a New Zealand citizen Charlotte Bellis should also have the freedom to return to her home country whenever she wishes, as should every other New Zealand citizen.
  But she can’t. And lots of others can’t. Because this current “government” has set in place rules which are probably illegal and certainly not democratic. These rules are abused every day, and seem to be applied arbitrarily depending on the relationship between the returnees and someone on “government” or a government department.
  
  Charlotte’s situation and the resulting publicity may be the catalyst required to make changes.

  NeverMind, if this is her first child there is nothing particularly odd about her wanting to return to New Zealand to be near her family when she gives birth. Many new mothers particularly appreciate the support of their own mothers at such a time. She may also not be fluent in the languages of Belgium.
  
  I do agree that competent reporters should hardly be surprised that MIQ is a debacle. Perhaps there is a music event happening at about that time which her daughter could DJ at? I’m sure someone can rig up a system to play music chosen by the random movement of a baby’s limbs. Performance art, I think it is called.

  Unfortunately, many people trying to get into MIQ do not have the profile or clout to embarrass the Government. Bellis is doing the right thing. She is just the tip of the iceberg for many individuals and families who have been hurt and broken by the illegal, inhumane and unnecessary MIQ programme the NZ Government is running. Bellis might be the catalyst for many young women to finally realise and admit the Government is anything but kind and the restrictions in our country are not only unreasonable, but harmful. Many of Ardern’s fervent supporters are such women and in my experience many older, Pakeha women also support Ardern because she “saved them”. I would say to those women: if Bellis was your daughter, how would you feel? Would you still support Ardern and the MIQ that she has sanctioned?

According to this interview with Coughlan from the Herald, it took seven days for the PM to be notified of being a close contact:

Coughlan also explains how our testing system is already under stress even though we are early in this Omicron outbreak.

Given the speed that people can become contagious with Omicron, waiting seven days to be advised as a close contact is next to useless, and means there could be thousands of people in the community spreading Omicron at the moment.

What a pity we don’t have ready availability of RATs right now as a much quicker alternative.

Nothing much to stop the big sick. So buckle in for a few weeks of chaos and disruption as has been experienced overseas.

      The 24 days applies when you live with the person with omicron.
      
      In such a situation it is 14 days isolation for the person with Omicron and then another 10 days for the close contact. It is calculated on the basis that the close contact could have potentially got Covid on the last day of the 14 days that the infected person has to isolate.
      
      So for the PM the period of isolation is 10 days after the flight.
      
      I understand both periods are going to be reduced relatively soon.

      I think the takeaway from Dr Mapp’s comments should be that a national party government would have followed much the same policy as the present labour party government, but executed it more efficiently.
      There are no significant political difference between national and labour and haven’t been any for many decades. Our politics, like most liberal democracies, are based on personalities and brand loyalty.   Interesting that the testing system is currently under stress. My daughter had a covid test yesterday. Cold symptoms started Saturday while at work, so she called in sick yesterday, and needs a negative test to return to work.
  I was surprised to find that across all the Central Auckland suburbs there are only 3 testing centres. She got to there at about 9.30am and said there was no queue and she was tested immediately. This at a time when we’re having 100 cases a day. In previous outbreaks, there were queues lasting all day, and people being told to come back the next day. With no queues, people are obviously not concerned about being tested.

  If it takes over 24 hours for the PM to get a result from a PCR test, then our Government may as well throw in the towel, now.

Here is many reasons Jacinda has dropped in popularity in the polls,not because of the hard decisions she makes that she and the media have relayed to the public.
First of all is the Police have been compromised by her inability to leave them do the job that they are paid to do.

The media and the 105 Million dollars to promote Jacinda Ardern and her policy to the public, which if you look at it there is only one word to describe it ,bribe comes to mind.
People in the know getting preferential MIQ spots instead of Kiwi Cit trying to get home to see dying loved ones.
A friend of the Prime Minister and her partner from overseas getting three MIQ spots in one year before those who’s loved ones that are dying stopping them from getting home.
The continual saga of the cycle wagon Aucka cycle way on Aucklands Harbour Bridge that had 50 million dollars spent planing on it only to be shelved because of the expence which they already knew.
So for Jacinda Ardern to cry wolf at her bad polls and blame every one and everything else is a bit rich.

I’m open minded – politics is sport for me – and for a long time have maintained that Ardern is intellectually weak and indecisive compared to previous Labour Prime Ministers and her Cabinet is the weakest, ever, and by some margin. Employees at the Housing Advice Centre in Palmerston North said there had been an increase in people coming to them for help, particularly since the healthy homes act came into effect. “Some landlords want to sell rather than do the work to get it to standard,” said advisor Amy Proctor.

‘Do the work’ but notice no mention of the cost, can be many thousands, and that the ‘standard’ only applies to rentals. Home owners are completely allowed to live in a home that doesn’t meet the
standards.

Article includes photo of black mould in a previous tenancy. That’s really bad but a prospective landlord might also see the level of dirt in the photo.

(Not evicted actually, but tenancy terminated. Quite different processes but ‘evicted’ sounds sadder.)

Ironic that the article is in the section ‘Housing Affordability’.

  We will be moving next year but can’t rent out the house as it isn’t up to the standards.
  Will probably be selling instead of renting it out.

    Some of the new standards are bordering on the ridiculous and even the government concurs. Not that they seem to be doing anything about the, maybe they are but the pace is very snail.
    
    But just as bad are all the other new rules about tax and tenant rights. Responsibilities not so much. Anyone thinking about renting out a home is well advised to read at least the Schedules in the ever larger and more complex Residential Tenancies Act on fines and fees, followed by an hour or two perusing Tenancy Tribunal cases and decisions.

  I couldn’t bring myself to click on the link to read that article. “PM has nervous wait”. Utterly ridiculous. She has no symptoms, she is statistically more likely to be negative than positive, so really she has only a minor inconvenience of isolating while waiting for the results. I get that if she tests positive the media will be able to go all out, but it’s hardly a nervous wait. My daughter also got tested yesterday morning. Even though she has cold symptoms she will statistically test negative. If she tests positive we’ll deal with it then, but in the meantime we are not nervous at all.

How is this at all relevant?” Others with apparently little else to concern themselves with love the intrigue involved in the “I wonder who, and how many, has/have been a close contact of X?” game. Again, why is this at all relevant?
      
      Even after 2 years of accumulated evidence to the contrary, the entire suite of Covid policies are putatively predicated on the virus presenting an elevated threat. Can I remind everyone that the emperor that is Covid has no clothes, ladies and gentlemen.         Politicians’ mannerisms should be open to satire. People used to chuckle about Jim Bolger’s tendency to lapse into a faux-upper-class UK “aieee” for “I”, plus his tendency to mimic accents of people he was meeting.
        
        Recently, a bit I posted here satirising Ardern’s propensity to pronounce “D” for “T” was deleted. Some are more sensitive than me about satirising politicians’ pronunciation. Since the advent of moderators on Kiwiblog it’s a case of trying to pick the trend in moderator comments.

Something very odd is going on with the PM and her exposure to COVID-19. My kids have got turn around on their PCR tests in less than 8 hours, but the PM still hasn’t got a result back yet. Does the mean the PM isn’t important or spin is being prepared? And why no mention of her taking a RAT. None in stock, more spin or not clever enough to think of that?

  I don’t think there’s anything odd about the PM not having the results yet. My daughter had a PCR test yesterday morning, no results yet. The last time she got tested was during Delta in August and it took 5 days to get the result. The time before was not during an outbreak and took around 22 hours to get the result. All 3 times she had cold symptoms and was therefore unable to work (public facing role in a company with very high standards of personal presentation and mindful of their public reputation).
  
  The PM had better not have had a RAT – according to the covid website which I checked yesterday my daughter did not qualify for a RAT and neither does the PM. Whether they both should have been able to have a RAT is another matter, but while policy is that they can’t, I would be extremely angry if favoured people were able to access RATs when the public can’t.
  
  Especially after the public outcry after Clarke tried to get his friends access to RATs they weren’t eligible for, the PM would be an absolute idiot to use a RAT herself now. (which of course is entirely possible……)

    Hollyfield – I have had staff get PCR results in under a day and others it took 5 days.
    
    Difference between your daughter and the PM is that one of them can get their tests put at the front of the queue and instead of going into a batch with 20 others, which then requires individual testing if found positive, the PMs will have been tested by itself.
    
    The other difference is your daughter isn’t using MSM to bolster sympathy for herself!

From Nov 2021 to July 2024 the transition from the current system to the new one will take place.

Has the enabling legislation even been passed yet?

I think we are seeing the end times for the PM. She is a sponge without an anchor now that her guide Dr Fauci is no longer the #1 Pandemic Comptroller.
Who can she trust now? The adoration of 2017 has faded, and there seems to be no way to retrieve it.
The most dignified way to escape might be for her to retire with dignity (Judith Collins) and let someone else have a go.
Or call a general election later in the year, if she can hold on that long.

  re Hobson bay pollution what is not explained (or understood) is that historically in older parts of Auckland stormwater and wastewater were combined and collected in the same pipework. Stormwater overload and overflow into the Bay takes sewage with it. Separation work in the Hobson Bay catchment was partly undertaken in the 70’s but abandoned in favour of other priorities. A big job to fix the problem.

We will never know the complete truth about where COVID came from, why the global elite and our leaders inflicted violence upon the citizens of this world, in their arrogance thinking themselves so powerful, yet God looked on them and mocked their efforts.

Take for example the rabid focus on vaccinations to control this pandemic. In order to get a vaccine passed under emergency, they had to suppress any other viable medical treatment and change the traditional definition of what a vaccine is. Then as the antigen treatment was being rolled out the virus mutated and the efficacy of the vaccine was found wanting. Pfizer CEO Bourla then announced the development of an Omicron vaccine. How long is required for development, testing, approval, and use? Certainly more time than it takes the virus to mutate – the O virus is already on mutation B.

They can keep running on that vaccine hamster wheel but will they ever catch up with the virus? And while they are intently focused on this many of us sit and question why it is even worth having a vaccine for a rapidly attenuating disease. We also wonder why vax passports, job losses, economically destructive isolation periods are worth it. Clearly this is not about a health issue. The Globalists will not be letting go of their power grab any time soon.

So why is this insanity happening? I believe the reason is that God is giving us an opportunity to find him. What the Globalists intended to harm us, God intends for good.

I don’t have a huge amount of personal sympathy for Charlotte Bellis. She chose to work for Al Jazeera, chose to work in Afghanistan, chose to stay in Afghanistan with the US withdrew. I would not have chosen any of those options. She also could marry the father of her baby so that she is no longer breaking the law in Qatar. She likely qualifies for access to many Commonwealth countries.

However none of that is the point. The issue is that she should be able to return to the country where she holds citizenship, MIQ is not working and has a weird way of prioritising of applicants.

She is in danger where she is. I would not trust the Taliban when they say she is safe in Afghanistan. And even if the person in the Taliban who said she would be safe honours his words, there are other people both in the Taliban and just in the general public in Afghanistan who may feel differently. Qatar is not safe for her. It seems obvious she should qualify for an emergency spot in MIQ. A second country has offered her asylum, and her own country won’t let her back.

A NZ lawyer who helps with emergency applications for MIQ and files with the High Court for a judicial review to allow pregnant women to be given emergency MIQ spots talks about a pregnant woman in Australia whose application for an emergency spot was unsuccessful: “In the same week that decision was made, eight DJs were given a green light to fly to New Zealand,” he said.

Eight DJs being given priority over NZ citizens wanting to return is crazy. And that is just in one week.

“Shareholders pocket $9.4 billion, avoid $400 million in tax, without breaking law” screams the Herald. “Somewhat mysteriously, that mammoth windfall … came just before the Government promised to whack a new tax on high-income earners”.

I know competency in English is no longer a requirement in journalism, but I didn’t realise the ability to tell time had also been dropped. The government passed a law in 2020, the larger than usual dividend payments were recorded in March 2021. Passing a law is not a promise; it is the fulfilment of a promise (rare, for this lot). 2020 was before 2021, so the payments came after, not before, the promise.

Nor is there anything mysterious going on here. Companies which make profit can choose when to pay those out to their shareholders. If the government changes the top tax rate, it is sensible to pay out as much profit from the current and previous years as possible, so the money is taxed at the lower rate prevailing when it was earned.

This is so un-mysterious the IRD, the Labour Revenue Minister, National’s Finance spokesman and a tax partner at Deloittes all told the Herald it was expected and legal.

The only person who didn’t understand it was Chloe Swarbrick. She thinks it shows the wealthy getting out of paying their fair share of tax. Meanwhile, Treasury estimates the 3% of people earning $150,000 or more pay 24% of income tax. In old maths, 24% is more than 3%, not less. Eight times more, actually.

Ms Swarbrick says we need to tax wealth like we tax work. It may be fortunate the reporter didn’t ask how that would work. Perhaps Ms Swarbrick could set an example of her desired system by voluntarily contributing the appropriate tax on her wealth.

Being an MP, she seems to be on a minimum of $160,000 per annum. (It’s hard to tell because a year after the 6 month reduction in MP salaries ended, in Jan 2021, the Parliamentary website hasn’t been updated to show their current salaries.) For context, Stats NZ report our June 2021 median weekly income is $770. That is just over $40,000 per year, or about one quarter of Ms Swarbrick’s earnings. So if she didn’t enter Parliament already wealthy, she must surely have built up some by now. Certainly enough for a substantial contribution in demonstration of her desired scheme.

  I didn’t notice any mention in the article of the dividend imputation system, that prevents double taxing of profit – first of the company, and then of the dividend in the shareholder’s hands.
  
  Surely, the company pays tax on profit as they are incurred? Then it pays tax-imputed dividends when it suits?
  
  Perhaps an accountant or other tax specialist who follows Kiwiblog can explain what the Herald is getting at. Are there changes pending in the imputation system?
  
  No mention in the article of the No. 1 shareholder rort: businesses are able to operate tax free if they are registered as charities (Ngai Tahu has about 40 companies group registered as charities, and church-owned Sanatarium, the food processor, benefits from its charity state).

    I am certainly no supporter of the Seventh Day Adventist Church but it does not require a brain surgeon’s intellect to realise that Sanitarium Health Food Company Limited qualifies as a charity because it applies the required minimum of its profits to charitable purposes.
    I don’t know about what they support in NZ but in Australia they provide full hospital facilities at no charge or at significantly lower cost than other private hospitals and IIRC also provide housing for needy.
    You too could qualify for zero tax if you gave away enough of your income (or are a net beneficiary of the state)

      How can it be fair to competitors when a company can compete with zero company tax because it’s a registered charity?
      
      Since when can all even the most wealthy individuals qualify for zero personal tax merely by giving away a sufficient portion of their income? Can you give a pointer to this specific requirement please?

    This is a repeat of March 2001 (I think). Sir Michael Cullen increased the top tax rate to 39% on incomes above about $60,000 on 1st April 2001 (I think).
    Dividend income in the year ended 31st March 2001 was an incredible record.
    Any accountant who did not have his company clients empty out their imputation credit account in March 2001 should have been sued for professional negligence.

Something stinks, I think
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is due to receive her COVID-19 test results on Monday.
The Prime Minister began isolating on Saturday after being confirmed as a close contact of a case.A spokesperson for Ardern said she was tested on Sunday and is asymptomatic.

Why was Ardern not tested on Saturday when she knew enough of her exposure to start isolating, the test rushed by police escort to the nearest testing lab and the result obtained 8 hours or so later?
And, as other have noted, in the meantime take a RAT (test) – if the Government can find one of their own, or one of those they have “consolidated”.
Why did that not happen? Do we smell a RAT? – or lack of one?

Imagine the damage to her brand and the scorn that would be unleashed upon her for following her own advice and yet still getting the lurgy.     Still had to be executed correctly NK. I don’t know how many times I’ve been faced with a “relatively simple bunker shot”, then either chunked it and stayed in the bunker, or hit it thin, and over the green, or worse still, into another bunker.
    
    Ko is playing superb golf at the moment, but more importantly, looks really happy with herself and the world around her. She’s grown into her own skin after all the pressure of being a teenage phenom, and the golfing world is her oyster. I reckon she’ll add another Major to her resume this season.

National needs to widen their focus groups from business and farming folks to the poor and the struggling workers… coz Labour don’t give a stuff for the folks at the bottom of the heap.
(Labour are into hob-nobbing with the beautiful set..

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s chief press secretary Andrew Campbell has tested negative for Covid-19
It comes after Ardern, Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and Campbell travelled on a flight with a Covid-19 case from Kerikeri to Auckland on Saturday, January 22.
The flight was listed as a close contact location of interest on Saturday night.
The Prime Minister was tested for Covid-19 on Sunday morning and is isolating.
On Monday morning the results of Ardern’s test is unknown.

  If you use modern technology to record a staged powhiri – ceremony of welcome, traditionally a way of finding out whether people were friends or enemies, so including the validity of a wero, a Māori challenge – to a marae, and again use similar technology to telecast that powhiri when covid has caused the marae, 17 days later, to be closed and Waitangi celebrations cancelled – is all this valid Maori protocol, valid tikagna – Māori customary practices or behaviours?
  
  Does pre-emptive arrangements of something that will not actually follow through, made by the visitor rather than the visitee, allow the arranger to confirm “One day I want to be able to tell my child that I earned the right to stand here, and only you can tell me when I have done that”?

  Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has returned a negative COVID-19 test result after she was deemed a close contact and had to self-isolate.
  
  “The Prime Minister has returned a negative COVID-19 test. In line with Ministry of Health guidance she is required to continue isolating until the end of Tuesday, February 1, or as otherwise advised by Public Health,” a spokesperson said on Monday.

U-turn on mandatory Covid vaccinations for NHS and social care workers

Mandatory Covid jabs for NHS and social care workers are set to be scrapped, The Telegraph can reveal, after warnings of crippling staff shortages if the plan went ahead.

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, will on Monday meet fellow ministers on the Covid-Operations Cabinet committee to rubber stamp the decision on the about-turn.

Multiple government sources said ministers are expected to end the requirement because the omicron Covid variant, now dominant in the UK, is milder than previous strains.

The move comes after warnings that almost 80,000 healthcare workers would be forced out of their jobs because they had declined to take two doses of a Covid vaccine.

Going by the signs they display they are anti-vax/govt protesters.

Not trying to give them a plug but does anyone know what point they are trying to make?

Thanks to whoever posted that link yesterday. The 800+ comments are gold. Admittedly it’s behind a paywall but if you have press reader via library card you might be able to access it. Alternatively try emailing or ringing them. They have a student rate which I accessed via my son who is a student. Then it was only $83 nzd per year or $1.59 a week which is cheaper than the Ferald subscription. I think you just have to say you are a student to access that rate. They have some phone numbers on their site. I used my Skype account to ring them.

If you want a bit of global perspective on Ardern and to see what the rest of the world thinks of her and nz’s direction, the Telegraph sub is money well spent.

The Ministry of Health reports there are 91 new community cases of COVID-19. No individual number of Omicron cases is provided.

“Whole genome sequencing continues to take place on all new unlinked cases of Covid-19 and provides additional information to aid public health decisions. The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is now the dominant variant, therefore the specific variant of the virus is no longer being reported alongside case numbers,” the ministry says.

“As cases continue to increase, the priority for whole genome sequencing will be to highlight patterns of virus spread rather than individual cases.”

So WHY are we not getting the Delta/Omicron split? My assumption is that this is in order to maintain fear and the pretense that we have dangerous Delta outbreak. As always, the information released is carefully selected. The gullible are being manipulated.

  Well the numbers must be wrong because weren’t we due to have around 50,000 cases (or some other crazy number) according to some models? So far the omicron models look as accurate as the delta models, as in completely useless. The models are not without some merit though, as they are obviously great at stoking the fear, but as tools to predict the likely case numbers, would have to say not so great at this point.

Have started to travel a bit now that it appears Ardern isn’t going to do her lockdown stunt as easily as she has in the past. Although don’t trust her and wouldn’t put it past her to try that stunt again for a bit of control freakery.

Flew on an airnz flight yesterday. Flight was only 50% full. There are frequently no change fees on airnz flights even for changes very near departure, unlike before (when Luxon was running it ? where there were fees to do anything!!)

Is anyone else worried that airnz might go bust from having to offer such flexibility? How can they afford this? I know the NZ taxpayer is ultimately paying for this so maybe I should just see this as a way to get back some of my tax…

Greg Foran’s job must be an absolute nightmare. The worst conditions for an airline CEO, outside of China I’d say. Airnz will be fully nationalised at some stage I’d say. It must be.

Concerned woman from Mangere says she has a friend (a single mum) with eight school-age children…..very concerned about having to buy ‘approved face masks’ for them to wear each day.

She had thought they would be provided free by the school, but now finds this will not be the case. Apparently they are already on the bones-of-their-bum, and this will just add to their financial woes.

You’d have to wonder how many others out there find themselves in this situation?

Stuff fights internet disinformation with misinformation of it’s own. Title “Reports of death at West Coast vaccination clinic ‘complete load of rubbish’, says mayor”

The article has been changed and now reads, “Clarification: The final line in this story has been amended to express New Zealand’s death toll associated with Covid-19. Story updated January 29, 8.14pm.”

The bottom of the article now reads “”According to Medsafe, to date two people in New Zealand have died likely due to complications arising from the Covid-19 vaccine. Both were thought to have died from vaccine induced myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle – but the final cause of death is yet to be determined by the Coroner.

Scientific evidence shows the protective benefits of vaccination against Covid-19 far outweigh the potential risks of vaccination.

In New Zealand 52 people have died WITH Covid-19. Globally there have been over 5.6 million deaths from the virus.” (Emphasis is mine)
A search on the wayback machine shows the original article read :
“In New Zealand 52 people have died FROM Covid-19.”

So they are claiming only 2 people have been confirmed to have died FROM the vaccination. And then compare it with the number who died WITH the virus. 52. That is a misleading false equivalence. Comparing apples with apples the number who died WITH the vaccination is 133. And yes 2 have been confirmed by a medical body as likely. But none of the 52 virus deaths have been through the same scrutiny. They are reported as per WHO guidelines as covid deaths even if covid played no part in their deaths.

  RNZ: 15 April 2020 “A fifth person has died FROM Covid-19 in New Zealand, as the number of new cases remains steady at 19.”
  RNZ “A Christchurch woman in her 90s who was living in the Rosewood rest home is the country’s second death FROM Covid-19, the Health Ministry has confirmed.”
  But if you read the Ministry of health press release they are more careful with their words “The Ministry of Health is sad to report the country’s second death LINKED TO COVID-19.” They don’t say from covid they say “linked to”
  
  Did RNZ and the media deliberately mislead us, By telling us the deaths were FROM Covid.

Ok, scuttlebutt making the rounds at the moment is that MOH will be making a big announcement tomorrow.

Saw no one scanning in on a trip down the Sth Island last week.
Spoke to a few locals who were adamant that scanning in was a waste of time (agreed) if it meant they had to be locked down, after having been caught up in a ‘scare’.
Looks like Leo Molloy was right.
The Public has turned – although Sth Island cockies probably have finely tuned bullshit detectors!
