While there is concern that energy prices will follow the increases in petrol, food housing materials and many other things, the Government is standing by its “no evictions ” Policy for misbehaving tenants that are now being blamed for a explosion in unpaid Kianga Ora rents- and cash strapped taxpayers are footing the $9 million bill.
Then to top all this off the Herald have decided to give the Mongrel Mob who has been accused of threatening neighbors a chance to tell his side of the story after Kainga Oro decided to house him and his family elsewhere.

In one crazy Dem State a father of a small child found that a pedo in a child care facility had sexually assaulted the kid 100 times and like many fathers would do, stabbed the pedo. The madness continues as the father is now in prison while the pedo (who has been bailed countless times before) walks free.   I’m one of those people who wants to believe the best of people, and tries to look for the good in them.
  
  But this guy:
  
  – is a Mongrel Mob member (yes, you will be judged based on who you hand out with, why on earth should you think otherwise?)
  
  – has been in jail after spitting on police officers during the Covid-19 pandemic
  
  – asked not to be named as he and his partner were trying to get their children back from a placement with extended family (err, why have the children been “placed” with extended family?)
  
  – his partner’s partner (I think) was in jail

  The hypocrisy of the politicians and media is quite incredulous, having vilified attendees of the anti mandate protest (yes the behaviour of a minority was appalling, but so was some of the political (hello Ducky) and police actions).
  
  It appears to many good citizens that all forms of antisocial behaviour are on the increase across NZ, where people don’t feel same walking in either Courtenay Place or Queen Street at night anymore. Yet our weak kneed politicians fail to act, whilst the problem only gets worse.
  
  NZ seriously needs 3 or 4 societal rehabilitation encampments (like a military camp but affording a safe family environment) to safely house such people providing structure and incentivised rehabilitation programme delivered by professional social and educational services. Such half way house encampments would minimise societal harm and use of the prison service.

        Beat me to it. I wager some people (like Batman) have no idea what it would be like to face personal threats and intimidation like the victims describe, let alone a relentless threat to you and your children at your family home. Even worse when you feel powerless as the police and authorities don’t intervene to keep you safe.
        Even someone facing a brief malicious altercation in a public car park would likely be shaken up and change their behaviour for a significant amount of time.

  Media will continue to be funded or bribed by this government. It will just be hidden in the form of advertising. For example look no further than the latest ad for a zero road toll. Apart from being completely nonsensical, it doesn’t seem to have any purpose other than to provide those running the ad with some revenue.
  They’ll all be running new 3 waters ads again very soon and no doubt they will need to run ads for the health restructure & the media restructure. And of course Kāinga Ora will keep using their large marketing budget to advertise for more tenants (sarc).

  Because apparently journalists should have guaranteed jobs for life, and be immune from the possibility of redundancy – you know, like every other employee in New Zealand.

Hosts NZ upset in a very close first game and then fortunate not have their must-win second match rained off. Champions England lose their first match against favourites Australia and then lose their second as well, in another nail-biter to the West Indies, who had tipped up NZ in the first match.
So much great cricket still to come.

    The little I see of it is appalling, the level is not anywhere near that of a middle-ranked boy’s 1st XI.
    It’s rubbish and only being shown on TV because SKY is no doubt receiving a rather nice ICC subsidy to televise it. It sure as hell isn’t being broadcast because of its huge domestic demand.

  These women can play cricket. In yesterday’s match, a West Indies player pulled off a stunner of a catch that Martin Guptill would be proud of.

  I stand by my call that ALL politicians should take a mandatory economics 101 course when they enter parliament. Economics touches on every aspect of life and when fools are making decisions without undertsanding basics like supply and demand the country suffers.

    The common denominator why Korea, Singapore and Japan have Refineries is because they have NO oil/Gas and guess what? They have to refine themselves for Well , Energy security.

      Politicians have consciences (albeit for a very short time and often for dubious reasons).
      Businesses on the other hand are profits motivated else they go broke.

More bad news for taxpayers from Kainga Ora. Herald, paywalled, the key point is in the below quote.

Nearly $9 million in unpaid rent from social housing tenants. Interesting OIA response from KO, sounds like weapons grade deflection. 200,000 customers in 75,000 public homes, 64,000 of which are KO homes. Hmmm. 2.4% of total rent paid each year. No problem Then, apart from the problem for taxpayers. And the vast majority of tenants who look with envy on the cheap rent paid by those that won that lottery.

Most of the agency’s 200,000 customers were good tenants who paid their rent on time. The $8.8m currently owned made up only 2.4 per cent of the total amount paid in rent each year

Meantime neighbours getting on the front page has led to a tenant being moved urgently. That worked.

Not only are they paying shitloads out ($1.1million per day, at last count), but they’re not collecting the outstanding dosh.         Nope. Marsden Pt never processed NZ oil (wrong grade). We sent our crude to Singapore & got refined stuff back. I guess we could have retooled Marsden Pt to fit NZ crude but if it was commercial to do so, the oil companies would have done so long before the captain’s call.
        
        The bigger concern in my view is that while NZ had mandated (IIRC) a 90 day supply, most of that can be located offshore, or loaded on a tanker bound for NZ. Which is a fantastic example of something dreamed up by an academic or a politician that will work well almost all of the time, except when you really need it. I mean, what exactly are we going to do when that tanker is diverted to another port?

      Hmm, I think the oil companies only own around 35-40% of NZ Refining from memory, and it’s Mobil, Z and BP. Listed on the NZX, so a decent chunk is in the hands of ACC and other shareholders. But yep, it was entirely a commercial decision which was influenced by Government policy and the Governments view on the importance of the asset.

    Indeed…and the thing is because she banned offshore exploration, she could re-open it tomorrow with the most generous tax breaks for explorers in the world…and no oil company would take up a block. Loss of confidence for an oil explorer is like virginity: once it’s gone it’s gone, and can NEVER be restored. Oil companies’ logic is very simple: if a country unilaterally changed the rules once, they can do it again.
    
    Thankfully we still have some onshore exploration, and what were sub-commercial gas fields here and there which can become commercial when and if the price is right. Of course the price being “right” for an oil and gas company means it’s risen – perhaps considerably – and that is bad news for the hapless consumer.

    It’s not difficult Brian. A 25% reduction in the cost of fuel for consumers is a pretty easy target to hit if you aim at the Government taxes. You’d have to be pretty incompetent to miss that target.

  These are all Government measures intended to “steepen the curve.” While initially it was government policy to “give Delta a chance” and make it difficult for Omicron to outcompete the more indigenous Delta varient it has become obvious that Omicron is now the dominant strain.
  Omicron obviously doesn’t lend itself so well to supporting government fear and control policies as Delta so it is important to steepern the curve of infections and try to overwhelm health and food services to keep control of the narrative.

    Other airlines have to be allowed to fly to NZ. The Government cannot ban other airlines from NZ otherwise other countries will ban Air NZ from their airports. These other airlines also have planes stored in the desert.

    Relative or not, it doesn’t make it sound like a good thing, when the menu was more palatable not long ago.
    Debt has increased massively in a short amount of time (up from 2017 by $70billion from memory?), and there is certainly a lot of poor quality spending. Even money thrown on valid areas has no measurement or management applied to it.
    We need some new staff for the kitchen ASAP.

  This government throws around soo much money. 250mil here, 500mil there, a billion there. Where does it come from and where does it go? It has to be flowing to someone, somewhere. The non essential things it gets blown on too are amazing, whilst essential things like health, education, homelessness, child poverty all seem to go begging cap in hand. Maybe I’m getting old and and things have changed but everytime I see the government announce a spend up on something it seems like there’s always one or two more zeros than needed.

  Two things become apparent. This government believes they can spend money without restraint and it will all be good. Grant Robertson will just print another billion dollars every Tuesday and all will be fine.
  
  Secondly that Covid restrictions are going to last as long as possible. This government wants to keep up control and they want to take their Covid response into the next election.
  
  This country will never be prosperous under this government.

  The money run out during 2020. They had to print $55 billion directly into the government bank accounts to duly piss away.
  
  Government issues bonds, the market buys the bonds, RBNZ buys the bonds off the market its a pure money print. The RBNZ doesnt have any money but they can press a key board.
  
  The RBNZ will attempt to sell the bonds in the market over the next 10 years. (if conditions are right) Which is the same as cancelling money. 10 years to drain what Labo pissed away in under 12 months.
  
  Now the result is 7% pa inflation.
  
  Large Scale Asset Purchase = Large Scale Money Print.

  Paying foreign airlines to fly.
  If anything it should be shipping to asist getting goods to markets overseas.
  Why this has nt been scrutinised more I dont know.
  A container of seafood is more beneficial to NZ than a DHL parcel.
  Also a lot of goods that should of been shipped were I believe were flown highly subsidised.
  Like i say again. It is only good will with shippers coming down here and will continue to be so. Massive risk to an already shattered economy.
  The thing to watch is Russian crewed vessels and the larger container companies will be worried.
  Government announced a 30 million package for shipping.

      Quite…and it may surprise readers to know Rodney Hide thinks he is – or more accurately was – the best politician (in negative sense) in a generation or more.
      
      When he told me that, I asked him how then he was able to “get him” on lying to parliament over the $158k (IIRC) which he dishonestly received and never repaid. Rodney’s answer was that he never could have got him when he was at his prime…and that was over ten years ago; he is even more past his prime now, but is still a master manipulator of the sheeple.

    This is all very interesting. Given that Luxon has stated 3 Waters will be rescinded, how does he propose to do that?
    
    * Is he going to piss off all iwi who have been appointed to various water entities? Can’t see that happening.
    
    * How is he going to reallocate resources that have been confiscated from various councils who now have minimal/zero influence on Entity Boards?
    
    * How is he going to combat Maori Elite who self imagine they now own NZs Water and are making a mint out of it?
    
    * Is he going to take back taxpayer monies gifted to various councils for signing up to the 3 Waters rort and how will this be done?
    
    No doubt there are many more issues should this rort be implemented and rescinded but that will do for the present.

    As you expect, the answer is pretty complicated, but I’ll give it a go.
    
    Any law – unless “entrenched” – may be repealed by 51% of the MP’s. A law may be entrenched – as are parts [or all??] of our Electoral Act – by containing provision(s) that may only be repealed by a 75% vote in the House. That is called entrenchment. The problem with that is that without more, the very law itself – which contains entrenched provisions – can be repealed by 51% of MP’s, which effectively nullifies the entrenched provisions. In other words the entire law can be repealed, and the entrenched provisions disappear with it.
    
    The way to cure that is what is called double entrenchment which means that the law itself – the law containing those entrenched provisions – can only be repealed by a 75% vote.
    
    I don’t have time to go through the Electoral Act, but I think it might be the only double entrenched law in NZ…they are certainly extremely rare.
    
    I hope that helps – and even more so that I got it right! No doubt someone like Graeme Edgeler will put me right if I am wrong.

      DG, Surely the idea of entrenchment is that the Act is so important nationally that it should have bipartisan, or multi party, support of over 75% for it to be entrenched in the first place. Is there any constraint like this in the parliamentary entrenchment conventions?
      
      One assumes that if that is not the case, over time every party with a simple majority can make every law it passes entrenched.
      
      That could lead to a government Acts gridlock – an unacceptable or untenable situation when genuine and essential future changes are to be made.
      
      Another option I presume would be a binding public referendum .
      
      You are right, it would be useful to have experts or past MP’s on KB weigh in on this question.

To what degree have Labour’s policies since 2017 contributed to the ‘cost of living crisis’ that is now talk of the town?

I might add that off the top of my head I can name six or eight policies since 2017 that have caused increases to NZ business costs, complexity and/or compliance burden but, funnily enough, I can’t think of a single one which has reduced those burdens.

  I laughed at the fools who were renting that voted for Labour the first time. How stupid could they be. The government was going to make their houses warmer and dryer as well as removing ‘tax breaks’ from rich landlords. All of this was going to happen and rental prices were going to drop.
  
  It takes a special kind of person to believe that was going to happen. Obviously the reverse was true, rents are through the roof and its ALL down to Labours policies.

  Yes, a lot of new regs and complexity added in the last 4 years. I keep an eye on the rental sector and the number of added rules (and fines) are quite astonishing. The government intentions are to increase renter rights and conditions, and to encourage property investors towards new builds.
  
  Some of the new rules might look so simple in theory but are so complex IRL that even experienced landlords are asking questions.
  
  Meanwhile, every month the number of homes for sale is increasing, as is the number of new builds looking for buyers and the social housing waiting list. Maybe a connection there.
  
  As costs rise so does market rent. Of course costs do not rise to anything like the same extent across the sector (for example the huge number of mortgage free rentals) but rents will rise anyway.

  Quite a few from what I understand. My father has been in North Shore hospital since the New Year (not for or with the plague), tested positive a couple of weeks ago when others in his ward started returning positive results so they tested everyone in the ward. Shifted to the Covid ward.. He’s now over it and despite being 91 didn’t have much more than a mild cold. He’s been shifted from the plague ward now but it seems others in his new ward have been testing positive. Sounds like there’s a lot of it running free in the hospital.

  Perhaps quite a few, but most are more likely coming in asymptomatic and are surprised when they test positive.
  
  Quite likely many of those who have died with CV19 were symptomatic too.

  The vaxxers say that the vax reduces severe disease as evidenced by hospitalisation. This is their key success metric.
  
  But there is no definition given for “hospitalisation” by Ministry of Health.
  
  Only a year into the pandemic did MOH add a definition for covid deaths when we were told covid deaths may be totally unrelated to covid. eg gunshot.
  
  NSWales does give a definition and hospitalisation data.
  
  Definition: “Hospital admissions are counted in this report where the COVID-19 diagnosis is at least two weeks before or six weeks after the onset of illness. This does not necessarily mean all hospitalisations were attributable to the COVID-19 diagnosis. The hospitalisations counted include only in-patient hospital stays, and exclude day-only hospitalisations, Hospital in the Home, and those only in emergency departments or ward types not routinely used for COVID-19 admissions”
  
  A few things skew the statistics which are noted in their report.
  
  1. At the beginning of the pandemic and this outbreak all covid patients went to hospital. And at the begining of the outbreak the vax wasn’t widely available or eligible to the general public. So the beginning the hospitalisation rate among unvaxxed was extremely high.
  
  2. The very elderly are under represented as many are being cared for by an in home team and this is not counted. The NSW stats say that the number of people over 90 in the count is only half of the real number as there are so many being cared for at home. Presumably this is a highly vaxxed cohort that is undercounted.
  
  Why doesn’t NZ have hospitalisation reports. Mortality statistics. We have very little transparency compared to other countries.

So this is what NZ has come to.

My wife had a procedure a week ago to get a skin cancer removed from her face. It was reasonably extensive, a 5 cm incision down the side of her nose by her cheek. She was booked to go in yesterday to the local medical centre to get the stitches out. She is exempt from wearing a mask at any time, but considering she had facial surgery and a visible scar it should be blatantly obvious why she couldn’t wear a mask.
The nurse who came to remove the stitches asked my wife to wear a mask. My wife said she was exempt. The nurse said “no, no, no!!, there’s no such thing,” My wife tried to be reasonable and pointed out if she had a mask on the nurse wouldn’t be able to remove the stitches. The nurse said she could by pulling the mask to the side. My wife pointed out that made the whole concept of a mask meaningless. The belligerent nurse disagreed.
My wife said don’t worry about it, I’ll go home and do it myself. So she did, she left, went home, and with the help of a neighbour and a pair of tweezers and scissors. They did it together at home.
To say I am angry is to understate the depth of feelings I am going through right now. That Ardern can bring our medical system to this pathetic state of affairs horrifies me. My trust in our medical establishments is totally gone as is my trust in politicians.
What a total disgrace Ardern is. What a despicable, nasty pos.

        That means they can check by asking you if you are exempt.
        
        It does not mean they can check by demanding papers, papers. They have to take your word for it.
        
        There is another document floating around on the MoH website that helps “clarify” this.
        
        Elsewhere there is guidance that the you don’t even need a doctor/psychologist to sign off on an exemption. You can pretty much declare yourself exempt by your own judgement and nobody can call you out because they are not allowed to ask why.
        
        Since mental health and mental anguish are valid reasons, it pretty much makes anyone entitled to feel they are exempt.
        
        It’s really another “feel-good” law.

        I am all for businesses having free association and choosing who they provide services to.
        * If a business does not want to serve unmasked people – fine.
        * If a business does not want to serve unvaccinated – fine.
        * If they don’t want to serve gays, white people, men, women or people that drive Toyotas – fine.

    My wife has her exemption in her purse, but there is no requirement to “show” it to anyone. There is no requirement for a medical certificate. Legally nobody can demand to see evidence of exemption.

    However I’ll put it in context just for you – this was our local medical centre who are fully aware of her status. Also, the fact she had a 5 centimetre scar running from just below her eye to the base of her nose should have been a bit of a giveaway that a mask may not be appropriate don’t you think? And just how was a nurse going to be able to remove stitches while she was wearing a mask? It’s really just one more good example of how inane the rules are around covid and have been from the very beginning. Clear evidence that none of this is anything to do with health.
    
    Now, maybe you should go away and read the government papers and requirements around mask exemptions. Then you don’t need waste more time asking more irrelevant questions.

      Psychologists are describing this as Mass Psychosis and Group Think, where people have stopping thinking critically and have a fear that is all out of proportion to the risk. Other examples are people wearing masks going for a walk outside where there are few passersby. The worst example is the many many people who have been injured by their first jab, many with serious, injuries/health conditions medically verified and linked to the vaccine who are required to get a 2nd dose in order to get a vax pass or keep their job or study at Uni. Many of these are 20 somethings who are at very little risk from long term effects of covid but are clearly at risk from the vaccine. People have had specialists submitting multiple times for exemptions and been denied. I don’t know the exact number of exemptions given out but I believe it is less than 100. My GP told me the only vax exemption that would be approved was for people on prednisone as they would def get myocarditis. “Don’t worry about dying immediately after the jab, just come into the hospital and get it done so we have a medical team on hand to treat you immediately for the reaction we know you will have”. It’s appalling and clearly not about health. The only satisfaction I gain from this is that all the people denied vax exemptions (except for the exceptionally brainwashed) realise how bad the mandates are. They would have been pro mandate people who were inadvertantly pushed on to the anti mandate side. They will never vote for Labour regardless of previous affiliation. I am surprised National/Act didn’t make more of a fuss about this. Even the super pro vax medicos know this is ridiculous.

  If nothing else this should underline why it is important to become as independent of government systems as you can.
  
  Removing stitches is not really a medical procedure and is painless to do at home. The only real benefit you get from having a nurse do it is checking it has healed properly and is not infected (both of which are pretty obvious) or other complications.
  
  I’m sure if you wanted to, you’d find a whole lot of youtube videos to help if needed.
  
  Of course you need to rely on the system for some things (eg. it is impractical to try most surgery at home), but do what you can for yourself and avoid the system as much as possible.
  
  But this is not medical advice. Think for yourself.

      There are thousands of medical staff (both doctors and nurses) who have completely unplugged their brains and are just doing what the state and its fearmongers tell them.
      
      You could also say the same for many other encroaching government overreach.

    my wife messaged me to ask me to come home and do it for her. We had no problem with doing it, as you say, not a major procedure. As you say, more to do with someone checking the wound, that it was healing properly, no inflammation etc.
    I got home an hour later and she and the neighbour had already done it.
    We live very rurally. We are quite self sufficient in many things. Our neigbour is very practical also.
    We have no concerns about having to do this, I really just wanted to highlight yet again, how moronic the response to covid has been. Also, how yet again, our trust in once respected institutions is being eroded.
    We have and are continuing to make ourselves and some in our community, as detached from the system as we can. Just as you advise. It has been a tough couple of years, but I will say this – once you get that independence there is no better feeling in the world.
    As an update, there have been a number of “concerned” phone calls from the medical centre to our home and to my wife’s cell phone. No doubt, the incident has reached higher authority who realises the implications of the nurse’s actions.
    We won’t be engaging or responding.

A headline in this mornings Herald states that climate change has increased flooding on the West Coast.
Wrong. A far more relevant reason is in one word. Pakahi [the West Coast swamps].
In years gone bye, the common heavy rain would lie around in the pakahi and, over weeks, drain to the rivers.
Now farms have been cleared and giant drainage ditches dug. And presto, the rain hits the cleared paddocks, drops into the giant drains and is on the motorway to the sea.
Result: rapid rise in river levels and floods all around.
Human related? Sure. But climate change? Certainly not. But the alarmists will, of course, grab at every opportunity to expand their fake news.

Tried to watch last weekend’s recorded episode of the Nation. Had to turn it off. Seeing two women with mokos just put me off watching the Nation which I used to like. Mahuta and the presenter who interviewed Luxon both have mokos. There’s also a third woman newsreader with a moko at tv3 whom I turn off when she’s on.

Btw I think Mahuta would have been much better as Maori affairs minister. The visual message and her whole demeanour just symbolise how the angry Māoris feel. I guess Ardern put Mahuta in foreign affairs as it looks good for Ardern’s UN job application down the track. (However after reading that ‘Where’s Clarke Gayford’ Facebook group you’d have to surmise that Ardern’s UN chances are rapidly going down the gurgler. Whether the rumours are true or not. Where’s there’s smoke there’s fire. Surely!)

Having a moko just basically says to me these women are stating ” I’m on the extreme left/activist area of the political spectrum”. It would be nice for presenters to be impartial politically or not blatantly show their bias.

Tv3 seems to have gone full frontal Woke. What with putting in those two women with Ryan Bridge and having that weatherman William Wairua just confirm that for me. Was that a requirement for tv3 to qualify for funding from Ardern’s covid media bribe fund? That’s the only reason I can see for those changes in presenters.

Does anyone think Ardern is dragging the chain on announcing a refugee quota for war torn Ukrainians? Are they not the right skin colour or right religion for her preferred refugees?

I’m not in favour of NZ taking in huge numbers of refugees but after seeing the harrowing news stories I’m actually in favour of taking some Ukranians in rather than the usual refugees we seem to be taking in.

More than two years into this pandemic, and the only way to report a positive RAT on a child is to phone a helpline and get connected to an overworked telephonist who takes the details. Unbelievable.

Hilariously, the “call you back and keep your place in the line” function doesn’t work if you enter a mobile number. Instead, you lose your place in the line.

The underreporting of positive cases in children will be massive because of this.

Took little Gladys over to the ‘Waiata Dog Reserve’ earlier….and to watch all the other owners walking their babies, with not a care in the world, it really makes you feel blessed.

Person spoke up Newstalk ZB, he has crazy Kainga ora neighbours. They get moved out every 12 weeks so the property can be decontaminated for meth. Neighbours dealing drugs from the property, etc.

But, rather than target the meth addicts, Kainga Ora had a lawyer issue him a warning for being so agitated about the neighbours.

A serious staff clean out and attitude re-adjustment is needed. Kainga Ora are attacking the good tenants, presumably because it is easier than dealing with the gang members.

I’m fed up with this nonsense…this is a nation of feral lovers.

1kg tasty cheese – Au $12.00 NZ $21.20
Doz eggs – Au $3.70(xtra large) NZ $ 5.50 (Size 6)

Totals: Au $ 23.30 NZ $ 36.29

And there’s the reason we will have an outflow of young folk to Australia.

Australian cost of living is 2/3rds that of NZ and comparable salaries are at least 1.5X higher in Australia than in NZ.

    Sure, they were stirring the pot of rival indigenous factions but they did more to progress Samoa than the Brits and Americans at the time and let’s not go into what NZ did in their illegal occupation and suppression of Samoan independence.
    
    We may have suffered for German expansionism from their world wars, but might that have played out to a natural conclusion in contemporary times, Samoa would be benefitting hugely from German technology and work ethic.
    
    Not too happy about French exploits in their Pasifikan Colony, Americans in their annexation of Hawaii, British indentured Indians in Fiji or any religious meddling by Eurocentric missionaries throughout Pasifika.
    
    A big part of the decolonizing process our people are dealing with surrounds identity and defining the indigenous reference. We’re no longer content to have our identity and culture defined by the historically dominant white male patriarchy.

        NZ colonial rule eventually oversaw the assassination of the leader of Samoan non violence resistance in an act that supressed and denied Samoan independence for another 30 years but ultimately led to self governance.
        
        The killing of Tupua Lealofi would be tantamount in modern times to the assassination of Martin Luther King.

      I don’t know much about the German history in the Pacific, but I do know quite a bit about their exploits in Africa. Like in the Pacific, WW1 saw an end to that.
      
      What is interesting is looking at the movement of the Owambo people in Owamboland (an area covering Northern South West Africa – now Namibia) and Southern Angola.
      
      Before WW1, German South West Africa was, well, German. and Southern Angola was Portugese.
      
      Under the Germans, many Owambos moved North into Angola to get away from the Germans. They preferred Portugese to Germans.
      
      In 1916 the Brits took over South West Africa. Immediately Owambos flooded South to get away from the Portugese into British areas.
      
      Now there are relatively few Owambos in Angola.
      
      My grandfather spent a good portion of his life working in the british government in SWA. They really did a lot to help the people.
      
      In both SWA and other parts of Africa (Kenya etc) the Brits put in a lot of effort (including lives) to stamp out slavery – something that was rife before they took over. The Germans and Portugese turned a blind eye to slavery.
      
      My grandfather had a collection of slave rings which he had confiscated from slavers and we had a few kicking around the house when I was a kid.
      
      Sure, but today’s standards we might look back differently, but remember this was 100 years ago.
      
      And if anyone thinks German ethnic cleansing started with Hitler and the Jews, have a look what they did with the Herero people.

        There was no ethnic cleansing by Germans towards Samoans.
        
        If anything there was a practise of eugenics whereby many Germans married and had afakasi children who were prized in traditional Samoa.
        
        My grandmother was a Schmidt. I have 3 sets of first cousins all with German surnames.
        
        Germans negotiated fair price for land usage to develop crops like coffee, cacao and copra and invested heavily in infrastructure. Most of their efforts were undermined by American and British interests who fomented a civil war based on traditional factional Samoan rivalries.

  This is one thing I think the Government (any Government) gets unfairly treated on.
  
  If Charlotte Bellis, or any other person, wants to make a public argument about how she’s been treated by the Government then I think the Government should be allowed to argue its case.
  
  If you want to have the media put your side of the story out there then the other side (in these cases the Government) should be allowed to put its side out there too.
  
  My experience is this most often happens with sob-stories in the media about how some beneficiary has been poorly treated by MSD or Kainga Ora or similar. In those cases I’d like to be able to get the other side about whether said beneficiary has honoured their side of the social contract.

While I feel sorry for the legitimate families across New Zealand struggling with putting food on the table for there families and the basics as costs rise I ask this question why don’t they leave the alcohol on the shelves and use that money to buy the food they need.
To many of the parents today think of themselves before there children when grocery shopping and you might think I am being to harsh by saying this.
My wife works in a large Supermarket in a district of lower income people that often come up short of money when at the checkout for what they have purchased but always put food back instead of alcohol, so really they only have themselves to blame.
Food to feed your family should always come first before smokes and alcohol.

More reports are emerging of the nickel storm on the London Metals Exchange, whose latest episode is a ban until at least Friday on trading all nickel contracts, and on publishing their official and closing prices.

The ban came after the exchange’s nickel market was caught in an epic “short squeeze,” with prices more than doubling.

The Chinese tycoon caught in the short squeeze, Xiang Guangda, known as “Big Shot” in commodities circles, controls the world’s largest stainless steel and nickel producer — Tsingshan Holding Group.

He faces losses worth of $US8 billion amid the huge upswing in nickel’s price. His short position reportedly totalled around 100,000 tons of nickel, and he had built up a large short position in nickel futures. While it lasts, the exchange’s trading halt stops losses on exchange-traded contracts from rising further.

Russia is one of the world’s three top producers of nickel, with Indonesia, and the Philippines. New Caledonia is also a large producer. World demand for nickel in 2022 is expected to top three million tons. Nickel is a component of stainless steel, and is widely used in batteries.

Big American banks, including JPMorgan Chase and China Construction Bank have offered credit lines to Tsinghan to meet margin calls, and the Chinese Government has directed Chinese banks to help.

In short selling, a position is opened by borrowing shares of a stock or other asset that the investor believes will decrease in value. The investor then sells these borrowed shares to buyers willing to pay the market price. Before the borrowed shares must be returned, the trader is betting that the price will continue to decline and they can purchase them at a lower cost. The risk of loss on a short sale is theoretically unlimited since the price of any asset can climb to infinity.

Financial commentators are calling the nickel position the “mother of all short squeezes”.

      Yes many young people are on minimum wage so getting over $ 21.00 a hour when it changes will help but I know people that have worked for countdown for over 20 years that are on a very good hourly rate, they also get a bonus every 5 years to match their service. They also get 5% discount all year round with 10% for a month over the Xmas period, like all firms if you want to improve you have the chance to work yourself to head office and you would be surprised how they look after those that want to climb the ladder.

Inflation and interest rates are going to continue to rise. A property crash appears likely. Business failures will rise remorselessly.

Indeed, business has been completely and utterly vandalised by the government for two years. Expect business closures near you. People’s life work has been sabotaged by Cindy and Co, in a sustained campaign of government vandalism, burning the economy to the ground.

Winter should be fascinating. Economic disaster is coming.

The fact that we have another eighteen months with this clown show is of the utmost concern.

Let’s hope National winning the next election isn’t simply a pyrrhic victory…

  I have never been more pleased that 12 years. Ago I bought 5 acres and built a house on it. We have a beefie to kill every year, chickens ,ducks ,avo bushes, all the fruit and veg and berries I could want. I barter for firewood and milk. The latter my wife turns into a variety of cheeses. About all I buy at the supermarket are leaning products, flour and wine so nearly self sufficient. I raisetwoarchersfingerstoinflationandthisgovernme;t . Yes it takes a fair bit of work but that’s what retirement is for isn’t it?

No vax pass needed. I can book an eye test. It is indoors and close contact. But not a haircut.

Have they kept any stats on the percentage of optometerists who have caught covid (without the pass) and the percentage of hairdressers with covid (with the pass) .

Given this is a workplace health and safety measure imposed by the government shouldn’t they be keeping this data and publishing it.

Also worksafe guidelines on what is high risk and what is not. The guidelines for high risk environments as defined by worksafe are indoors less than 100m, close contact conversations for more than 15 minutes.

So why are outdoor seating at a cafe and mountain bike parks closed to the unvaccinated, when by worksafes own definition these are low risk. And if outside is low risk why can’t the hairdresser cut the kids hair in her outdoor courtyard.

Is it legal for the government to mandate places that by it’s own definition are low risk. And yet places that are high risk, small indoor retail is open without a pass.

Well, for those of you that are interested in actual data and science rather than government rhetoric, the first of the Pfizer documents have been released showing the some of the documents that were given to FDA and presumably all our regulatory authorities around the world. FDA were taken to court in order to force them to start releasing the information at a much faster rate so it wouldn’t take 55 years which is what they wanted. Essentially they didn’t want the public to see this. We now have proof that Pfizer and FDA (and Pharmac/Medsafe) knew that there were going to be significant numbers of people injured from the vaccines. Although it is true we don’t know the rates because they have redacted the number of injections so we can’t work out the rate, but they seem high for a 3 month period from 1 Dec 2020 to 28 Feb 2021. You have to wonder why it is redacted if they have nothing to hide.
It may have been acceptable with a risk-benefit analysis for Delta, I am not so stupid as to be unaware that you may have to lose some to save some people. However, where there is risk, there should have been choice (not mandates). Also, Omicron completely changes the situation. I can’t wait for the law suits from vax injured to start here, they have already begun in the US. That is worth donating to. He is Boosted and has been pro-vax throughout the last year, but watching the realisation that he was misled by the government that they were “safe and effective” is quite sad.

  The Ministry of Health reported nine deaths on Thursday, one at North Shore Hospital on Wednesday. The remaining eight all died in the past fortnight: four in late February and four in March.
  
  Seven of the deaths were in Auckland and one in Waikato. One was in their 60s; three in their 70s; two in their 80s; one in their 90s and one over 100 years of age.
  
  Given the average life expectancy at birth for the population as a whole is around 80 years for males, and 83.5 years for females, over half of those deaths could probably be said to be not exactly unexpected. If we knew whether they were Maori, we might be able to say seven of the eight deaths are no more or less than the average.

  Yuhuh. Little bits of truth and clarification coming out, confirming what we already knew from implication we already could see for any paying real attention.
  NZ just catching up with the rest of the world again, just like the ‘Covid hospitalisation’ numbers, which turn out to have little valid meaning.
  Overseas media has already been covering such things, and I look forward to the narrative changing, for those that are open to it.

Concerts. It’s been a while. Just booked to go to the Foo Fighters in December. Dave Grohl is a genius musician, songwriter and – if you seen his music videos – a comedian. Learning To Fly and Long Road to Ruin are laugh out loud, with awesome music. The Pretender shows overly aggressive riot police getting given a serve.

Well Jacinda Ardern the tax cuts he’s talking about is rolling back your wasteful spending that is helping no one except the Labour Party.So if want to cry foul about the National Leader think about your crooked media spend to keep the on your side and your up and coming merger with TV One and RNZ that you hope will give you a advantage for the 2023 Election

    I really want One Ewes to run a poll that asks:
    
    (1) Who did you vote for in 2020?
    (2) Who do you propose voting for in 2023?
    If (2) is different to (1), why have you switched allegiances?
    
    It’d be even better if the poll asked specific questions too as regards folks’ updated opinions on the value (to them) of, oh, the Health system, the Police, the Media, the lockdown(s), the trustworthiness of the daily Covid pronouncements, the brownification of New Zealand via such things as Three Waters, Government efforts to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis…
    
    Won’t happen, of course, but it was interesting watching Jessica tonight adopting an almost NEUTRAL position re the latest poll results…

Our Dear PM, and all the sitting politicians and the MSM tried to convince us (the great unwashed) that only a tiny proportion of folks supported the anti-mandate protestors, but it appears they were WRONG

Voters were asked: “Do you approve or disapprove the way in which the Government handled the recent protest at Parliament?”

A slight majority (46%) said they approved of the Government’s handling; 43% said they disapproved and 11% didn’t know.

More likely than average to support it were Labour supporters, men aged 18 to 34 and Wellington region residents.

Those more likely to disapprove were ACT Party and National Party supporters, women aged 18 to 34 and Waikato residents.

It looks like our Dear PM has made a major misstep in her pandemic plan….and if the Nats have any clues they should quickly disassociate themselves from any further support for her Government’s covid response.

I just crunched me some numbers.

Votes cast at 2020 election: 2,919,086
Votes for Labour: 1,443,546
% of vote for Labour: 49.45%

If tonight’s poll is correct and Labour now has the support of just 37% of voters, Jass has lost 363,484 voters in under 2 years…

And climbing.
