      Thanks MMA. In the Catholic calendar of saints, today is St. Alphege (940? – 1012). He was an English saint – started off as monk, then became Abbot of Bath, then bishop of Winchester, then Archbishop of Canterbury. He convinced the Danish raider Anlaf to stop raiding England in 1005, but came back in 1011, captured Canterbury and Alphege. They demanded a ransom for him, but Alphege told them not to pay, so Thurm the Dane got angry, and despatched him with his battleaxe.

  Today is also Southland Anniversary Day.
  (When I was at school Catholic kids had a holiday on Easter Tuesday & because there were three terms it never fell in the school hols)
  I started my long career in Structural Draughting in the MOW for about three years. Talk went round there was a bloke who worked for the Dept in Roading Division going up and down the motu working on the highway system.
  For years he managed to be in the right places to take advantage of the customary holidays associated with the various Anniversary Days.
  Mind you everyday was a holiday in the MOW for some people.

  Ardern is going round peripheral countries like Singapore trying to look like she’s doing something re trade. What’s the point of that? If she wants to make meaningful headways in NZ trade partnerships she needs to talk to China and the US. Not the likes of Singapore. Not saying I don’t like Singaporeans, they are very nice people.

They are setting up naval bases in the Pacific. And for years they have been engaged in ruthless trade practices such as the theft of intellectual property.

  Orchids “steal, lie, cheat” and look impudently good while doing so.
  
  Most flowering plants offer nectar to attract pollinators and reward them for their visit. Orchids on the other hand usually trick their pollinators into pollinating them and stick the pollinarium onto the animal without rewarding it for the visit. Some orchids evolved to look very similar as other flowers nearby so the pollinators can’t tell the difference. Others even look like female insects and even smell like them to trick the male insects into copulation and sticking the pollinarium onto the insects before they even realize that they got tricked.

Posted on fb: Thought I’d share – The question needs to be asked of Z Energy why they chose to stop importing bitumen into NZ at the end of 2020? (Z as you know are a major shareholder in Marsden Point). Bitumen has this month been identified by NZTA as a strategic material to NZ lnc (in reality it always has been) and they have announced that they will now become the major importer of bitumen for all of NZ so as not to be held a price hostage to importers. Imported bitumen used to be processed through Marsden Point refinery and sold mainly to LTNZ.
Marsden Point is now in the process of decommisioning as a refinery supposedly due to lack of profitability and dubious reports of its age and commercial viability, and will become an pre refined fuel import terminal only.
To understand fully take a step back to last year. In May 2021 the Aust Govt announced an approx $2.4 billion bail out for the 2 OZ oil refineries including the Ampol Brisbane refinery. Stating very clearly the refineries were strategic assets that could not be lost.
Z (also Caltex) is now in the final stages of being bought out by Ampol Aust (first announced Aug 2021 and confirmed early Mar 2022) shortly after which Marsden Point started to be shut down. Ampol is a large refiner of crude oil in Australia so after the purchase of Z is finalised by the commerce commision they will have the monopoly of importing pre refined crude oil products into NZ and onselling through Z and Caltex to the public plus being a major shareholder in Marsden Point refinery. What is going on here? Something smells very fishy to me.
1) Z Energy announces end to bitumen late 2020.
2) lmportation and processing of bitumen through Marsden Point stops early 2021.
3) Aust Govt bails out Ampol refinery to the tune of approx $1.2 billion.
4) Aug 2021 Ampol announces planned buyout of Z.
5) March 2022 buyout confirmed and a few days later Marsden Point starts decommisioning from refining crude oil to refined product import terminal only.
6) NZTA announce bitumin is a strategic commodity and will now import their own supply.
7) June 2022 Ampol completes buyout of Z and becomes the major supplier of refined petrol to NZ as well as owner of the Z and Caltex brands here.
Is it all starting to make sense now?
Since last May Ampol have recorded a profit (dunno about the other refiner) so l’m pretty sure they miss out on some of that Oz govt funding? Nevertheless l’m sure that extra funding would have helped them buy out Z Energy here and helped in securing the Marsden Point closure. All of which works in their favour and to the detriment of NZ and us poor sods paying at the pump.
Meanwhile all this is happening our govt is dicking us around further and spouting off saying we are good little global citizens by selling off a significant amount of our strategic oil reserves. This while 31 other countries signed up to the same international agreement have openly refused to do this as its against their national interests.
New Zealanders are being well and truly rogered from behind here folks. All the way to the petrol pump and home again. Questions need to be asked of Z Energy, Ampol, NZTA the Commerce Commission and the NZ Govt but l haven’t heard one of our bought off MSM say boo about the FACTS shown above. It’s about time someone did.

  I have no doubt that New Zealanders will regret having that refinery close. I think part of it is that politicians like Jacinda are ignorant of the central roles etroleum and gas play in modern society. If she was aware, why would she have banned exploration in New Zealand?

      Aren’t there around the world Refinery Ships that travel around, refining oil on site at various places?
      The shot would be to buy one, and have it move around to the different storage ports, get a crude tanker alongside & refine on site.
      I don’t know how the logistics would work, but maybe worth exploring??

    Back when oil and gas exploration was banned, media were not fettered by Government as covid had not yet arrived, so much media conjecture was that the Greens pressured Labour and New Zealand First’s Winston “horse-traded”t in an outside of Cabinet agreement so he could get his waka-jumping bill passed. The ban was also to enhance Jacinda’s image on her first major trip overseas, allowing her to tell Macron of the ban, although France has to import most of what Ardern was banning and must have thought her to be nuts.
    The actual value of the Taranaki product, and the possible field off Oamaru, and run-on effects of banning exploration, so the innovative hydrogen industry – now to use electricity that may not so readily be available after New Zealand’s vehicle fleet convert, but the rest of the world manufactures from natural gas – was probably of little consideration.
    Yes, Jacinda seems to have been ignorant.

    Feedstock is the issue – not refinery capacity. Since NZ is dependent on overseas sourced crude oil which ever way you look at it the trick for NZ and its oil companies is to enter into contracts with crude oil producers for mid to long term supply augmented by oil futures. NZ oil companies can then buy refined products from the cheapest refinery which meets QA standards and can use swaps so the refinery can get its crude from its usual sources. In other words there in no need for NZ to take delivery of the crude oil it contracted to buy.

  The international agreement you refer to is presumably the IEA which is made up of 31 member countries. In addition the IEA also includes ten association countries.

“… kaupapa of mana orite, mo te mātauranga Māori” according to Google Translate, apparently means “principle of equality, for Māori education”.
See? – now if you don’t know a great deal of Maori, as I don’t, you are faced as Maori in 1840, considering the Treaty they were asked to sign – your language sprinkled with words you don’t understand. How ironic, if not devious?

And does not “… the beautiful concepts and values of te ao Māori …” – with “te ao Maori” being the Maori worldview” – suggest that Maori religion will be perhaps taught under the guise of “History”?

  I saw the story last night, Yvette. There was much talk about the concern that students may feel vulnerable and culturally unsafe, that certain topics could be “triggering” for some students, that feelings of guilt, shame, blame, and anger might be generated, and a hostile environment for children.
  
  This concern seemed to be around how Maori students would be affected. But I wonder if there has been any thought given to how students of British descent, for example, might be affected. After all, if they are forced to endure lessons in which they are told that their ancestors were nasty evil colonisers who are entirely responsible for all the problems that affect Maori today, I rather think they might feel somewhat uncomfortable.

    I wonder what thought was given to the reality that all Maori today have some non-Maori ancestors and many have connections to more than one tribe. Are these children to feel ashamed of some of their ancestors now? What happens when local Maori history says their ancestors in Tribe A attacked their ancestors from Tribe B? Or that a Maori ancestor of theirs was the one who sold the tribe’s land?

  On a serious note, there has been 25% drop in the prison population since 2020. This has been ignored by most of the media I assume because Labour don’t want the public to be aware of it. However, some of us have concerns about the level of support given to these prisoners on release. I would assume based on how this Government operates there will be no support provided. Hence the level of anarchy we are starting to see in some communities.

The Local Government Commission has accepted proposals for 52 dedicated Maori seats across 27 district and regional councils.
Gisborne will have 5 of its current 13 seats moved to Maori wards and 40% of the Far North seats will be taken from the Maori Role.

  This is not only bad legislation, it also sanctions corruption IMO.
  Take for example, Maori wish to totally control council determinations. If so, they can convince a number of like-minded Maori to enroll on the Non-Maori electoral roll, get elected which isn’t difficult given the apathy of Local Body electors and when in office, support Maori initiatives.     DPF was not really against Maori wards as such. His primary concern was ensuring that all votes, irrespective of whether they are on a general roll or a Maori roll, have the same weight. It is an inherent part of equality.

  Today, as yesterday, you advance your opinion by misrepresenting your opponents’ views. The KB claim is not that the Rotorua bill is the end of suffrage, but the end of equal suffrage in Rotorua and, once this principle is accepted, will lead to the end of equal suffrage throughout NZ.
  
  In a recent post, DPF defined and distinguished between universal suffrage and equal suffrage. In his submission on the Rotorua bill posted on KB yesterday, in nine of his first 10 points on the bill, DPF used the terms ‘equal suffrage‘ or ‘equality of suffrage’, and also as a sub-heading, sometimes bolding the phrase. The problem with the Rotorua bill is that it violates equality of suffrage, a bedrock principle of modern democracy.
  
  It is possible, as in Parliamentary elections, to have racially separate electorates and representation without violating equal suffrage and, perhaps this is what the LGC has just done – I don’t know. I strongly doubt that racially separated electorates are a good idea, but recognise that a case can be made for them. However, the bigger problem which KBers have repeatedly and clearly objected to, is unequal and discriminatory representation on the basis of ancestry.
  
  Do you think some voters, by reason of individual ancestry, are formally entitled to greater representation? That is what you seem to be arguing for.

  John, there are many people who feel that setting up more race-determined separate representation is a backwards step.
  
  What was proposed in Rotorua was that around 12,500 Maori roll voters would vote for 3 representatives and 37,700 voters on the General roll would also vote for 3 representatives. (Another 4 representatives would be chosen by the whole community). That is not equal suffrage, hence the objections.
  
  What is proposed in the Local Electoral Act is that the number of Maori roll seats will represent the proportion of the Maori population in the district. If Rotorua wants 10 Councillors, that would mean (12548/50250 x 10) = 2 Councillors.
  The remaining 8 would come from the General roll (or possibly, 7 from the general roll and 1 at large, since the actual proportion is close 2.5). It’s still race-based representation, but it does preserve the extremely important democratic concept of equal suffrage.

STATS NZ just released their Environment Aotearoa 2022 report.

Something significant has happened since the 2019 report (these are issued once every 3 years).

We now have a star sign colouring book of demi gods that we will all need to shape our lives around if we are to enjoy the bounty of New Zealand.

I threw off the shackles of Greek, Roman, Celtic gods ( that were linked to ‘scientific knowledge’ of my early ancestors) many many generations ago… and I personally made a choice to not live in fear or awe of a biblical sky god.

Why do my life choices now need to be tied back to sky and earth gods of a star sign?

And I’d be very surprised if a similar concept does not exist in every other culture on Earth.
  
  Environment Aotearoa gone on to say:
  “Wellbeing means different things to each of us, and how we define and understand our relationship with the rest of the natural world is diverse and evolving.
  
  In mātauranga Māori, wellbeing can be described using ‘waiora’. ”
  
  They do not tell us about what wellbeing means to people who are not Maori. So leaving out over 80% of the population.

The Skeptics Society is in the Maori science debate again, and seemingly on the side of Maori knowledge as science. That contrasts with its stand a decade or two ago distinguishing Maori knowledge from science.

The society is linking to two short videos by American Rebecca Watson, a prominent atheist blogger. Below are transcripts to the two videos.

Of special interest to Kiwbloggerites is Watson’s reference to a letter by Scott Hamilton, who used to post comments frequently in Kiwiblog:

”Scott Hamilton (I assume the figure skater)[sic] that describes a New Zealand doctor in World War II turning to the Maori for help fighting dysentery in Allied soldiers:”

Watson’s right to the extent that Hamilton was typically on thin ice in his views.

A taste of her comments on Maori:

“…they used trial and error and the scientific method to develop canoes that could travel vast distances, fishing methods that allowed survival for long stretches at sea, and a compass that was divided into segments carved onto the canoe, allowing navigators to find their way depending upon the movements of the sun and stars.

“Once they reached New Zealand, the Maori could only survive through the scientific method. Whakaotirangi was one of the first to settle the islands, and she brought important seeds with her to ensure survival. But the climate was colder than where her people came from, so she traveled around experimenting with plants to find food and medicine, eventually building a garden of species advantageous to human survival called Hawaiki Nui.”

These aren’t myths or legends – they’re tales of science and human ingenuity in the face of overwhelming odds …

    Their whare may have had partial earthen walls..formed by excavating a sunken floor for the building.

    The magic jawbone coded pathways in the stars by previous ancestors.
    
    Each island had a zenith star. Which at a certain time of the year positioned itself directly above land. For NZ it was Te Matau a Maui, the fish hook of Maui known in the west as the tail of Scorpio.
    
    When you’re navigating by traditional Pasifikan methods your canoe/boat is stationary and you’re essentially reeling an island towards you.
    
    When viewed through the lense of Pasifikan oral traditions, the story of Maui fishing up NZ with a hook fashioned from the magic jawbone of his ancestor then becomes fact.

One of the girls from tennis was sooo pleased to hear that John Campbell had been given the DCM from TV1 Breakfast, that she thort she’d tune in again.
But only to discover his slot had been filled by that guy Matty McClean, so she hasn’t been back since.
