Stephen Penn died on Sunday night, driving his Superstock at the NZ Superstock Teams Champs in Palmerston North. It was a complete accident, with tragic consequences.

Stephen leaves behind his wife Vanessa and two daughters, who completely supported his racing ambitions, and were a party of the wider speedway family. Their lives have been turned upside down. Elon Musk gets into the sanitation business by buying Twitter, the world’s largest sewer for $US44b or $US54.20 per share. Twitter’s board approved the offer a short while ago, proving that their constitution works to protect shareholder interests as designed, and that vague threats of “poison pilling” were just that.

If you thought the wailing from Shanghai apartment windows was haunting, try to imagine the standing-room-only safe places at TwitterHQ today. These fragile souls won’t go quietly in the face of industrial quantities of bleach, so expect fireworks. I’m ready.

  Intellectual property is a problem. No, I lie. Intellectual property is a wonderful thing. Government rules that have been twisted by corporates into over protection of intellectual property, and low quality government that allows low quality patents….leading to patent trolls.     You can see the bump up in republishing of old books when they go out of copyright. There are many books that simply can’t be reprinted because nobody can work out who owns the copyright any more, and it’s not worth the effort.
    
    The very extended copyright rules we have really serve only a very very small number of people, and many of those people aren’t in favour of copyright anyway. Many big corporations, however, are.

        Correct. They often do in many situations. That’s driven by California and Hollywood – the Mickey Mouse law (literally trying to avoid Mickey Mouse becoming public domain).
        
        There is also a strong push in the US to relook at intellectual property. I read a great (and very long) article analysing why intellectual property isn’t actually like physical property, because it’s a non-rivalrous good, and then going much more deeply into the contortions and hypocrisy required to believe our current arrangements make sense. Let me google that up to see if I can find it.

        Basic argument is that in physical property, property rights exist so as to MANAGE scarcity. Only one person can enjoy the benefits of physical property (only one person can eat a piece of cake, you eating it means I cannot).
        
        With intellectual property, the property rights exist so as to CREATE scarcity. If I write a song and sing it, then you can also sing it. Without intellectual property rights I have no way to stop you singing it.
        
        The argument is a lot more nuanced than that, and doesn’t suggest that we shouldn’t have intellectual property rights – rather that intellectual property rights are created for specific public purposes, and that the rules around them should be the minimum necessary to achieve that purpose.

        National is not ACT, so by and large will not follow ACT’s prescription.
        
        ACT will obviously get some things but they will not be the major determinant of the shape of the National/ACT government. If they want that they have to be bigger that National.
        
        As to what National will do?
        
        A sinking lid on core public service numbers, which will save hundreds go millions per year. Tightening up welfare with much more checking up those in receipt of unemployment benefit. The result. Unemployment numbers will largely be the same as those on the unemployment benefit. No tram to the airport. No provincial growth fund, but Callaghan will stay and might even be increased. No doubt many other things.
        
        I would say about $2 to 3 billion saved each year, growing to $5 or 6 billion within 4 years or so.
        
        Government expenditure as a percentage of GDP will progressively go down from the current 35% of GDP to closer to 30%. That will take about six years.

        Reducing Government expenditure by 5 percentage points of GDP would mean reducing expenditure by $17.5 billion annually. That cannot be achieved by the measures you describe.
        
        Indeed what you are describing is utterly uninspiring, and I am not applying an “ACT lens” to that judgement. What is National going to do about resource management, housing, and the myriad of regulatory burdens on farming? Do they have a stated and rational climate change policy?
        
        Some Government departments have ballooned in size. A “sinking lid” on public service numbers will not fix that. These public servants have been employed to implement the most crazy policies. National needs to take a knife to those policies.
        
        I am not saying National needs to be like ACT. I understand the reasons. But they need an exciting prescription to make New Zealand prosperous and fair. That will need ambition. So sorry, if a ‘sinking lid’ on public service numbers and no tram to the airport is all they have… well New Zealand is doomed.

  It sucks because I’d rather have an adult debate about where the 68% increase in govt spending went and why it’s achieving nothing. But in another sense, it’s the other side of the coin of media failing to put any pressure on Ardern for the last 5 years.     I have sympathy with that. There are extremely clever people out there, who have a limited grasp of the finer points of the English language. The issue comes, as it surely would with project managers, when for eg: the comma or sentence break is in the wrong place and makes the sentence interpretable into something it is not. The flow on effect of a misinterpretation can have profound, and negative effects.
    I have seen grammatical inaccuracy in contract cause 100’s of thousands of dollars of losses to one of the parties more than once.

  Every day we see gang members awash with cash. They don’t need ours. So:
  
  No gang members in social housing. Residents or visitors. If gang members are ever seen at a social housing property, the tenants are evicted and are ineligible for social housing. After all, they have plenty of mates, right?
  
  No anti social behaviour at a social housing property. This includes noise after 10pm and before 9am. If a party spills out onto the street, or threats are made to neighbours or any of the crap that currently happens, the tenants are evicted and not eligible for social housing for at least 1 year, then put at the bottom of the list.
  
  If tenants are arrested for a disorder crime or worse (a la the Dixon St chaos) they are evicted, then put at the bottom of the list.
  
  Expectations on behaviours, that’s what’s needed

        I don’t really use twitter, and I’m somewhat sympathetic to the idea that most people use twitter for things that the MSM and others don’t care about at all – sharing cat photos or chatting to their friends.   That’s just getting silly. Dropping in Maori greetings or sign offs, individual words where you can infer the meaning from the context or they have the English translation provided is one thing. But sending an email which quite literally fails in the primary purpose – ie to communicate – is quite ridiculous.
  
  And sadly, in the current environment, if you reply trying to point that out you will probably be roundly criticised for lack of cultural sensitivity. 🙁

      This is the part I don’t under stand.
      
      everyone is putting “he/him” or “She/Her”, but nobody is ever directly addressed like that.
      
      They are either addressed by an honorific “Mr/Mrs/Miss/ etc), by their name, or by “Sir, Ma’am (sometimes Miss)”.
      
      Simply appending one’s honorific should in fact convey all the information you need to convey, and bonus: You are actually addressed directly in that way, talked to rather than talked about.

        In Canada, refusing to use someone’s preferred pronouns is illegal. Refer Jordan Peterson, it’s what made him famous.
        
        You can’t use someone’s preferred pronouns if you don’t know what they are. Hence starting to put them on your communications.
        
        Interestingly, for me, Jordan never actually refused to use anyone’s preferred pronouns in a situation where he knew them. He just objected to being compelled to do it.

  Yes, the Chinese moving into the Solomons is apparently a “redline” affecting the USA and NZ as well as Australia according to Morrison and the US spokesman. Somewhat similar to Putin’s attitude to the EU and NATO militarising Ukraine you could say. Although to be accurate the Solomons is far away in the briny unlike Ukraine which is contiguous to Russia. Once we’ve dealt with Russia and impoverished all Russians we’ll move on to deal with China presumably.

        There is no doubt that when the Warsaw Pact was dismantled (it had been constructed in response to NATO) that NATO should have similarly been axed. Europe should have embraced Russia. Russia asked to be included in the new order and was rebuffed. It is obvious that Russia has much to offer the Europeans in the areas of energy and culture. But no, the USA (not Reagan) continued to rub in the superiority of capitalism and continued with the humiliation. Think of the 2016 Presidential election. It’s about time that the USA spent its tax payers’ money on roads and infrastructure and even a health system instead of seeing itself as the world’s policeman propping up “failed states’ and working for “regime change”.   If the history of human civilisation has taught us one thing it is that disarming yourself invites people to come and take what you’ve got or worse.
  
  You only have to look at the Moriori here on our own lands. Invaded, mercilessly butchered almost in their entirety and any survivors enslaved.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it the most never use it.

My tolerance for idiots is extremely low these days. I used to have some immunity built up, but obviously there’s a new strain out there.

It’s not my age that bothers me, it’s the side effects.

The Herald features someone from Canada on an Edmund Hillary fellowship. I tried to find a little more about such fellowships, with our Milky poster in mind for nomination.

This scheme says of its purpose:

… bringing together humankind’s creative potential and entrepreneurial spirit in Aotearoa New Zealand, to build and support innovative ventures for global impact.

Have these folk launched any outstanding ventures, say on a par with the space launch company founded by Mr Beck, of the Southland engineering family? Or of Xero, the accounting software firm?

I found on an immigration advice site, that , after three years, migrants under the scheme can apply for permanent residency in NZ.

Mmm, shades of student visas?

The Hillary scheme’s web site notes that the chair of trustees has gone on to be chief of the controversial Royal Society of NZ.

Has the Ardern PR squad sent messages down to subsidised newspapers to boost organisations like this?

Or are the only two options that
A) AT get to carry on doing their best to get us out of cars and wasting loads of money, all while making no difference to the climate or
B) AT are forced to do ‘A’, but even faster and wasting even more money, while still making no difference to the climate.

Is there any chance a judge might ask for some evidence (not model outputs) of how much (or little) any of the wasteful spending might achieve?
Is there any chance of common sense winning the way?
I think I know the answer, but I live in hope that _something_ will change the disastrous course we’re on (i.e. a failed net zero policy and ruinous debt).

An interesting, to me at least, discussion about a book publish in the early 1990’s at around 33:00 there is an interest statement about the power structure evolving in Washington which seems very prescient in terms of its belief in power and the unimportance of democracy in running countries AND how people crave someone to tell you what to do.

That statement has come to pass in 2020 -22
