  Yet this is seldom mentioned by the experts, professional or amateur, as something worth worrying about,
  Too hard?
  Nobody cares that kids are left to their own devices while Mum and Dad are incapable on the couch?
  Maybe some of these adults have to stop focussing on their own needs and think about someone else occasionally.

      Sure, you can blame Cindy short-term, but what about long term? Is National offering a light at the end of the tunnel?
      
      If there was real hope for real change it would be a different matter.
      
      Even those that choose to live here (for now) are often working for overseas companies. For example well over 90% of my customers are overseas and my son works for a local development office of an overseas company too.
      
      Neither of us are really participating in the NZ economy and building NZ companies beyond paying tax here and buying groceries from New World etc.
      
      So blaming Cindy is only part of it. The picture won’t change much when she goes.

        cmm I agree, at this stage National are offering nothing substantial to improve things, I can only say that I cannot imagine how things can possibly get worse. I do believe Ardern is the worst PM in NZ history and that the damage she has done to so many aspects of life in the country is immeasurable and the negative effects will take many years to recover from.
        Sadly I have to say that my primary goal is to see the back of Ardern, then deal with what fills the void.

        Young tradies in my family looking hard over the ditch, say the plan is to make some money and come back, but will they? They have more cousins over there than here, most second generation Australians, with good jobs, own homes and now starting families. Attractive prospects.

As seen on 1 News at 6 yesterday evening, and on 1 News website –
Victim of Havelock North water contamination hopeful for Three Waters
A Havelock North woman who fell ill for weeks after drinking contaminated drinking water in 2016 is hopeful the Government’s Three Waters reform will bring about positive change.
Around 5500 residents became ill and 45 people were hospitalised following an outbreak of the waterborne disease campylobacteriosis in August 2016. It’s also believed to have contributed to four deaths.
…” Drinking rainwater from the roof wasn’t really an option with all the contaminants that you can get so moving into town was quite a treat because suddenly, I could drink in excess from the tap,” [a woman, who does not need to be named] told 1News.
Soon after her arrival, heavy rains battered paddocks in the region and contaminating the water with what is believed to have been sheep faecal matter.
“We had that big rain event on the Sunday. By Wednesday I was in hospital being told to drink a lot of water, stay hydrated, so I did. [1]

This woman seemed to not be aware now that Taumata Arowai – https://www.taumataarowai.govt.nz – is the new water services regulator for Aotearoa New Zealand. We are committed to ensuring all communities have access to safe drinking water every day. We also have an oversight role in protecting the environment from the impacts of wastewater and stormwater.
This new Government – 4th water – entity has been fully operational since mid November last year.

1 NEWS seems to not be aware that Taumata Arowai exists either.
Which may be the way Ardern’s Labour Government wants it – since the Havelock North water contamination disaster is the key element of their “3 Waters” argument.

This lady got sick drinking water, and she genuinely believes, it seems, that the solution is a massive, unaccountable, co-governed, shambolic behemoth.     NK, while I do agree with you, the point is that the new water regulator, Taumata Arowai (doesn’t seem to have a name in te reo English), carries out the job, or should, of ensuring water purity, so for this lady, her concerns have nothing to do with “3 Waters”, which is pipes, not what is in them.

  Given that we have Taumata Arowai to monitor and manage water quality in NZ, what the eff do we need 3 Waters for? IMO, Councils still own their water Infrastructure and are responsible for its planned, preventive, and corrective maintenance and anything else they want to do with it. Under Taumata Arowai, it’s Council’s responsibility to remedy any anomalies reported to them by Taumata Arowai.
  IMO, 3 Waters is nothing other than a grab for ownership of water by Maori and must be resisted by all or any means possible.
  A march on Parliament would be a good start.

  The problem in Havelock North was not the water supply.
  It was that a design fault allowed ‘contaminated’ water to enter the supply system.
  This was exacerbated by safety check system failures.
  Heavy rain batters Hawke’s Bay every year and the resultant ‘contaminated water has not resulted in this problem.

      Water was sucked in via a split (rusted) well liner after a dry period and the ground had shrunk away from the liner.
      Heavy rain and overland flow allowed animal shit to go down the hole and be sucked into the water supply.
      A basic check would have caught it IF Council were competent.

  Yesterday I looked at the TV1 coverage of the Three Waters announcement. It includes a graphic which purports to illustrate that these four new entities will save a lot of money. There is no title, no explanation, but I guess the figures are meant to be per household per annum.   Later, the article states “Without reform, households are facing water costs of up to $9000 per year”. But none of the figures in the graphic shows a cost of $9000. The highest is under $5000.
  
  The article also claims “an estimated cost of $180 billion to fix New Zealand’s broken and decrepit water infrastructure.”
  
  Nowhere does it explain how the “savings” from 3 waters are going to happen. If the cost to repair something is $180 billion, how does re-arranging the governance structures reduce the cost?
  
  Does anyone else remember how we were told that amalgamating Auckland’s councils would deliver savings to the ratepayers? Any sign of those yet?

    Well there were savings, initially, but my old boss and the Nats underestimated the power of the bureaucracy. After the super city amalgamation 8000 bureaucrats lost their jobs for redundancy…within three years they’d all come back, and more.

  The worst place to be in New Zealand on the night before duck shooting was in their house. Lights on, doors banging, phone calls to the people picking him up to make sure they were awake and on time at 4.30am. Not to mention the chain smoking.
  
  Worst possible outcome was when his ride didn’t arrive and I had to take him 20/30ks to the dam – talk about panic.

It’s time we did away with ethnicity determining what’s happening and all united as one. The Treaty needs to be filed away as it’s meaning today doesn’t remotely resemble what it meant when it was signed. It’s skewing everything and giving one ethnic group something they are definitely not entitled to. It should relate only to the time it was signed and absolutely nothing today because today doesn’t resemble one iota the 1840’s. File it away!!   If/when the Maori named and cogoverned water entities fail who will pick up the tab, fix their failed processes/systems and rotten infrastructure? By creating these monoliths they will isolate accountability from delivery.

    When we are unable to drink the water coming out of our taps we have bigger problems than who pays. I fully expect that if this proceeds it will be the Waikaremoana situation on a massive and deadly scale.
    Here in Christchurch they plan to steal close to 7 billion worth of assets with 1 billion of debt. Looks like we will then pay for the repairs on assets all over the South Island . The removal of the von Tempsky place names is peurile and unwarranted. It is part of the dangerous but quite pathetic attempts to revise our history.

Gustavus von Tempsky was a colourful character who seemed to enjoy far too much chasing around the North Island in search of a bloody fight, being a skilled swordsman. But he was also a unique water colour artist and an accomplished singer.

Erasing names and events from our history is juvenile and indicates a contempt for reality and truth. It is part of the “feelings not facts”, rose tinted view of the world that socialists seem attracted to.

      He’d lived and adventured in California and central America before he came to New Zealand.
      
      Whether a white colonial accent had evolved then is an interesting question. Many of the settlers and White soldiers, and especially von Tempsky’s guerillas, would have come from Australia. Had the Australian accent begun to evolve by the 1860s?

What really pisses me off about the rising crime is the woke, left, Govt and Police view that it’s mostly the victims problem for not investing in enough security. That woke Counties detective quoted yesterday even called out “car owners” in the long list of groups who need to assist stopping youth crime. Others have specifically said small business owners need to buy more roller doors, bollards and alarms. Same goes for all those signs in places about removing your valuables from cars at public places.

Do we really want to end up like Johannesburg? I don’t want roller doors, bollards, 8 foot razor wire fences and people being too scared to go about their daily lives becoming the norm in our society.

By accepting crime you just normalise it and each year it gets worse.

  The bollards one is particularly unrealistic. I suspect more store fronts are already on the property line. Putting in bollards would mean making private use of the public street space. I wonder how many Councils actually allow that?

  It is the same as Significant Natural Areas (SNA). If the council or government decide you have some nice trees,or wetland, they can declare it a SNA. You have to maintain it, fence it, pay rates on it, but cannot do anything with it, and nor can a new owner.
  It is land confiscation in all,but name. I suspect if they had to pay for it all, including purchase and maintenance, they may not be so keen.
  I see in the news a day or 2 back, ther was an article about a land owner having exactly that problem, and all his neighbors were busy clear fellung their sites before the district plan changes.

One thing I can guarantee… rain will still fall from the sky, sometimes in great volumes and sometimes infrequently.

When things go wrong with our public water system (as it invariably will) and our household water bill starts to rise exponentially, then folks won’t be blaming the Government or their water provider, they will remember who pushed the reforms through.. and have a very jaundiced view of the effectiveness of co-governance.

    I don’t know if the numbers have actually been worked out yet, but if there are 4 “co-governing” entities, even if each has a dozen Maori representatives, that’s fewer than 50 people across New Zealand. Even allowing for a few hundred more on the local consultative groups, the total beneficiaries will be less than 500 people. From a population of 5 million, that’s 0.01%.
    
    That’s who’ll actually get the 50% say.

  There are many areas in which the Government can, and certainly has, pushed on that door. Quite why Three Waters – whose whole idea was to take water out of politics and into utilities management – was considered a sensible one of those is anyone’s guess. Partly, it has clearly been driven by Nanaia Mahuta.

In my opinion the biggest issue facing our beloved democracy is the now open push by the Labour government to implement apartheid via cogovernance throughout our society, for example Three Waters.
So far the reaction of we who oppose this has been pretty much to blow hard on social media forums such as Kiwiblog and to wait for the election.
But sooner or later someone is going to call for an on the street good old fashioned pro democracy protest.
What will happen then? Will Maori independence supporters show up with their black and red flags? Will there be a street battle that makes the anti- mandate protest look like a picnic? Will this feed into the government’s view that we are all racists?

Steven Joyce talks up New Zealand’s foreign student industry in an article in the Herald, but in fact much of this industry was a citizenship selling rort.

Citizenship was on sale by universities and secondary schools, and then private colleges, often foreign owned.

The developed world competes for high-quality immigrants in the sense that they have high skills.

In New Zealand there were rorts such as private “IT” colleges, where 90 per cent or more of the students had no intention of going into the IT industry.

Taxi and Ubi drivers, whitewhare-chain staff, door-to-door sales for electricity companies, and pizz makers and delivers often proved to be the high-tech careers that were the end result.

International tech companies like Xero, have been home grown. They have been helped with foreign-born staff (as well as New Zealanders), but these can be recruited fully trained. Further, much IT routine work can be done overseas – cheaper – on contract or by overseas employees based in their home countries. The internet makes feasible NZ based multinationals with high skilled staff in source countries with those countries’ wages and operating costs.

The student visa-rort industry contributed much to New Zealand’s record immigration that has put great pressure on infrastructure, from health to education to local facilities and services.

A top quality immigration policy would have NZ recruiting far smaller numbers of foreigners but with far higher average skills, and skills of more benefit to this country. For example, nurses before teenagers purporting to be early replicas of Steve Jobs but soon planning careers in real estate.

    The country is moving towards an inflation crisis. Demand for all workers will slow when the government is eventually forced to take strong action.
    
    A “mass exodus of skilled New Zealanders,” means exodus to Australia, whose economy and living standards are soaring away from New Zealand equivalents.
    
    How New Zealand competes with richer Australia for skilled workers will be interesting.
    
    Some who migrate to New Zealand do so because it’s a back door to Australia, which still seems to have, at least in effect, some White preference in its immigration.
    
    It will be interesting to see how long Australia keeps the “back door” open to New Zealand citizens and residents. If that shuts, it may well make it harder for NZ to recruit skilled people overseas.
    
    Time for us to focus more on training and educating New Zealanders.
    
    Which will provide, relative to other countries, a higher standard of living, as measured by GDP per capita? Reasonable speed, internally driven, economic growth; or fast pure GDP growth from high immigration?
    
    The powerhouse growth of the United States, with its vast resources, was enabled by high immigration over centures. That was accompanied by an assimilation drive (schools, flag saluting, pledges, super loyalty, etc).
    
    New Zealand’s recent high immigration was accompanied by official and unofficial promotion of a culture of multiculturism, the antithesis of assimilation. Our grandchildren will find which approach is better.

The Taxpayer’s Union (from FB)

The Taxpayers’ Union has spent the day closely examining the Government’s “revised” Three Waters plan unveiled this morning. In short, the Government is forging ahead – and the minor tweaks to the scheme actually make Three Waters even worse overall.
Here’s what New Zealanders need to know:
⚠️ There are no significant changes to the co-governance arrangements. That means there are still four layers of bureaucracy between you and the new water entities, and the representative groups remain 50-50 co-governed between iwi and councils.
⚠️ The Government will now issue local councils “shares” in the new water entities. But it’s Nanaia Mahuta being deceitful: regardless of their shareholdings, councils (and therefore you & other ratepayers) will still be stripped of all the crucial rights of control that are usually associated with ownership. Councils won’t be allowed to receive a return from the water entities, yet that is specifically allowed for Mana Whenua groups. Ratepayers will no longer “own” the assets in any meaningful sense.
⚠️ There will now be additional bureaucracies set up as part of the reforms, including new “sub-regional” representative groups and a Water Services Ombudsman with a “tikanga-based dispute resolution process”. Yet another layer of expensive bureaucratic fat.
⚠️ There will be yet another costly communications campaign to try to convince New Zealanders of the “need for change”. In other words, taxpayer-funded propaganda is back.
⚠️ Iwi will have their own consultation process for the legislation, separate from the transparent select committee process available to the general public. This is simply unbelievable. For the first time, New Zealand’s Parliamentary process is going to have ‘priority access’ based on race.
Of course, we were never expecting substantial improvements to this fatally flawed policy. Mahuta knows exactly what she is doing, and the “independent” Mayoral Working Group was always set up to be a sham. While the Government has picked up most of the policy recommendations the group was stacked with the very few pro-Three Waters mayors, and was even itself 50-50 co-governed with iwi representatives Ms Mahuta hand-picked!

  Privatisation of water is fine so long as it is set up well. I’m not an advocate for it but it is not some evil monster.
  
  I also heard the PM saying this was all about water quality. That is crap. They have just set up a water quality regulator. This is about transferring wealth to Maori. It is as simple as that.

    How can Maori get a return on assets they don’t own, while the owners are specifically denied one?
    They are going to contribute nothing except expense – they have no more expertise in managing water and wastewater, (or stormwater, given the vast changes to our landscape since they were the sole occupants of the country), than anyone else in New Zealand.
    
    The notion that somehow, being of Maori descent, makes you a superior person with much greater environmental understanding and concern is just plain dumb. Race is a human construct with no scientific basis.
    
    The idea that governance should, to any extent, be vested in an hereditary minority is one that has been proved, the world over and throughout time, to serve only the interests of that elite, and not those of the wider population.

One of my customers is getting all hopped up on diversity. It’s a big thing being pushed from corporate and squeezing itself into every crack of the organisation. Managers are being “encouraged” to hire for diversity and turn a blind eye to professional defects in said diverse individuals.

Being a bit of a sausage club, the group I work with doesn’t seem very diverse, but actually is if you look at it properly:
* Origins: They have people born in UK, Europe, NZ, Asia and Africa (white South Africans are still Africans).
* Languages: English, Maori, Afrikaans, Gaelic, Dutch, Mandarin & Cantonese. At a stretch they can add Xhosa and French.
* Sexuality: not polled.
* Skills: A diversity of engineering: software, digital electronics, analogue electronics, mechanical.
* Motor vehicles: Honda, Toyota, Kia, Mazda.

They’re hiring for a new software development role. They really need a Portugese speaking black lesbian from South America with a civil engineering degree who drives a Skoda.

Extra points if they can also program in Linux.

  Apparently the lease signed by Waka Kotahi specifically prevents the office in question being sub-leased, so Muggins Taxpayer is stuck with the cost. The photo on Stuff also shows a well-furnished premises, with at least two standing desks, which retail for somewhere between $1500 and $2500 each, lots of wide-screen monitors, and the usual office mod-cons, no doubt all high-end. because you can’t have consultants sitting on chairs from The Warehouse.

Something I can’t work out; They got married and now one of them is 36 and they have 4 kids aged 9 to 19. They met at a bar when they were studying. Being 36 one of them was 17 when the first one was born. Aren’t you meant to be 18 to be in a bar? How old were they when they married and how old were they when they left school? The church almost collapsed before they took over due to the last guy having an affair. It’s a real jumble up that article. But then it’s a stuff article, whatever the truth we’re probably not meant to work it out anyway.

    I noticed too that the media were not giving him crap like they generally do with Christians but make no mistake, he is being used. Theres probably a stuff reporter running round the country right now looking for other churches built on stolen land. That pastor is opening a can of worms. I am the co-owner of a small electronics manufacturing business in Whangarei. We manufacture digital instruments for the marine and emergency vehicle (fire trucks and ambulances) market.

95% of our products are exported which is GST free but we have to pay GST on all our imported electronic components.

When an order for parts comes into New Zealand GST is owing so it gets intercepted by Customs and we have to not only pay GST but have to hire a Customs clearance company to clear it through Customs who pre-pay the GST and charge us extra.

Because we are a GST registered company, we then file a GST return and get all the GST we paid back from the government.

This is very inefficient. Why does the government charge GST registered companies GST if they are going to get it back anyway? It costs us a lot of extra money and takes a lot of extra effort for absolutely no gain to anyone except the companies we pay to clear the goods through Customs and the Customs employees.

  Our company will not be unique. There will be thousands, if not tens of thousands, of other New Zealand companies having to go through the same bureaucratic nonsense. This causes us to be less competitive globally and increases the costs for our local customers.
