Listening to Kelvin Davis / Chris Faafoi of late , I am coming to the conclusion the plan of the Maori caucus, and Labour in general IS deliberately to make NZ such an unpleasant place to live that only their supporters wont want to or be able to piss off overseas!

  On the way home from the hot pools yesterday I listened to Kris Faafoi being interviewed on the immigration policy settings announced yesterday.
  
  What a train wreck. He spoke very quickly. It was impossible to follow. I just got the message that things were “streamlined”. He simply refused to answer some questions, just saying they were “streamlined.” If you have 5 minutes, please listen. Best to start half way through after the warm up is finished.
  
  It is deeply disturbing. He is clearly totally out of his depth. And being out of your depth is horrible.
  
  On one occasion, I took on a contract to do some data analysis. Within a week I realised I did not have the right skills. I immediately fronted up and helped the guy find someone to replace me.
  
  How, and why, can these Ministers carry on, with the stress of not being able to do the job?

      What message John? He refused to answer regarding numbers and just talked and talked. Same as Mahuta and Ardern do regularly. And his daft response to HDPA’s queries around “profitable for two years” – if they are still around they will be he says – oh yeah? What about hospitality that have been pretty much out of business for a couple of years and are only just starting to get back on their feet? I’m with Ben. This guy is not up to the job.

      For eg, Faafoi could go back to journalism, or being a PM’s press sec. David Clark could go back to being a Presbyterian Minister. Little could go back to being a Unionist. Robertson can go back to being a Government worker, Hipkins a low level manager, Sepuloni a teacher, Davis a teacher. Mahuta could go back to being a waste of space (oh wait!).   I have to ask whether pre Treaty Maori who were powerful and prosperous owed their position to warfare and slavery , ie off the back of other folks misery .
  
  Anyway , if we can’t get past rehashing history and constantly posing ourselves as oppressed victims then how the hell can we all prosper together into the future.
  
  All very divisive stuff. Not healthy at all.

    That is the pattern of Maori Life from about 1500s until early 1800s.
    
    As Horticulture failed in the southern NI and population pressure rose, warfare (as evidenced by construction of fortified pa) and resettlement of defeated Tribes into marginal lands became the norm.

After reading a report from Audrey ‘Not so’ Young in the Horrid about Kelvin Davis’ speech in the General Debate one thing that struck me was this Kelvin kept on banging on about how his family has been disadvantaged by whitey yet Kelvin:

-Son of a chief, important member of his tribe
-Went to University
-Was a Principal (somehow) at a Primary School
-Became an MP, Deputy PM/Leader and Cabinet Minister

This is hardly the life of someone that has gone without in his lifetime and by judging on his performance in public life he didn’t get there on talent alone.

The nerve of these ass clowns is staggering as is the performance (or lack of) from our feckless journalists to call this out.

This is Jacob Zuma level ignorance.

  Being “disadvantaged” has become a political statement, it has nothing to do with reality.
  Claims about lack of opportunity, education or healthcare all bear examination.
  Is it that these services are not available, or that they aren’t delivered in a narrow way that a particular group in our community believe is their right?
  Why is there a demand that a minority is indulged (because that is what it is, nothing to do with actual outcomes) because it chooses to reject what is offered and paid for by everyone through taxes.
  Claiming poor health outcomes when people refuse to see doctors, or attend hospitals has got nothing to do with a racial bias, but everything to do with personal responsibility. If you refuse to drink, but water is in front of you, who is responsible for your thirst?
  Setting aside the arguments for/against the covid vaccination programme, when a group decides to hold back from vaccines, for example, until hundreds of millions are spent in bribes in order to save their own lives, what does it say about the sense of entitlement?
  Davis coming out with this rubbish is ridiculous beyond words, that he is incapable of seeing the quite hilarious irony speaks volumes as to his idiocy.

  Kelvin Davis and Simon Bridges have starkly illustrated the difference between Labour and National with their respective speeches.
  
  For Labour it is all about being a victim with no personal agency to improve oneself. For National it is not about constantly asserting victimhood, and all about doing the best you can for yourself, irrespective of circumstances.
  
  Not hard to decide which leads to better and more aspirational government, as well as better personal outcomes.

So elements of the media adversely reported on Prince Charles’ Speech from the Throne to the UK Parliament. He stood in for Her Majesty who is 96yo.
I do not remember Her Majesty being so criticised for her Speeches from the Throne.
What the media needed to have made clear was that the Speech from the Throne is scripted by the PM and his Government and not by the Palace. So Prince Charles cannot be held accountable for the content of the Speech from the Throne.
As to criticism of what he was wearing (a Royal Navy uniform) what did the media expect him to wear – t shirt, shorts and thongs?

Over the past 4 years the Government has borrowed and printed money to the extent we now have an inflation crisis. To make matters worse the Reserve Bank delayed raising interest rates to head of inflation.
Interest rates are like a super tanker. Its takes 12 to 18 months to see the impact of an interest rate change.
To compound the problem Robertson is planning on spending an additional $6 Billion in the Budget.
This will stoke the fires of inflation. And like most of the Governments spending it will be wasted pissed up against the wall like a drunken sailor.
Governments especially of the Left lack the fiscal rigour to control their wasting of OPM ( other peoples money).
Until we get a Government who acts like a responsible household who only spends what they can afford to spend inflation will get worse and we will leave succeeding generation with the problen of repaying the debt.
I say it didnt have to be this way.

    It’s “moderating,” because the 40-year-high rate of inflation fell from an 8.5% 40 year high rate of inflation to an 8.3% 40 year high rate of inflation.
    
    On top of that it only fell because of two things:
    – a slight fall in the price of petrol in April, which has already been wiped out in May as the price climbed to an all-time record.
    
    – Inflation is measured as year-over-year, so the April 2022 measure of inflation appears lower simply due to the statistical quirk that the baseline is April 2021 when prices were a bit elevated as compared the March 2021 (lockdowns suppressing price increases) to March 2022 measurement.

    I’ve not looked at the NZ comparison but the same likely applies here because aside from ongoing arguments about what the measured components should be over time (e.g. buggy whip prices are ignored) there are other economist arguments that have changed the calculation of CPI. It may be that NZ has made the same changes?

The Cabinet Manual lists the various types of conflicts of interest that can occur, including this one:

2.63A conflict of interest may be pecuniary (that is, arising from the Minister’s direct financial interests) or non-pecuniary (concerning, for example, a member of the Minister’s family). A conflict of interest may be direct or indirect. Ministers must consider all types of interest when assessing whether any of their personal interests may conflict with, or be perceived to conflict with, their ministerial responsibilities.

Even a perception of a conflict of interest is a problem, according to the Cabinet Manual. No one is alleging that Kiri Allen’s former wife acted illegally, but it’s very bad look for a government which promised new standards of openness and transparency. Maybe it’s time for the Auditor-General to have a look-see.

    I’m surprised there has not been more commentary here on the quotes from former National Party TOW negotiations minister, Finlayson the other day on Radio NZ.
    
    Frankly when I first saw them written by a couple of commentators here I didn’t believe them, so at odds with the man’s character did they seem to be.
    
    So for once I made a point of tracking down the RNZ podcast and it turns out that they’re true.
    
    As bad as they are, what really concerns me is that this attitude must have been clear and present to other National Party MP’s and Ministers, as it marinated away for nine years. Which leads me to wonder how many more there are like him in National, keeping quiet for now.
    
    Looks like I’ve found my single issue to vote on in 2023.

  Interesting problems around what will count as a car. Presumably it will have to be reg’d and wof’d and not just some wreck in a paddock. But then how many 20+ year old cars are actually on the road completely legally? If it does need a wof then not much to stop anything being wof’d if it’s just going to be scrapped, unless they do full wof checks at the scrap yard.
  
  The bigger problem is that in the current financial climate you need to be pretty well off to afford the extra $40K+ outlay on a new EV. What’s the point of means testing then.

    After reading above I looked at the cars as I was walking on the mean streets of Mangere Bridge and saw one first registered in 2000.
    Twenty is pretty old for a car particularly as if much needs fixing it costs more than it’s worth.
    In the past I’ve glanced at cars on the even meaner streets of Onehunga and it’s interesting just how many have lapsed registration.

      We had a 1998 Subaru Outback for awhile, my partner wanted to teach someone to drive in a manual. Needed a new engine from the wreckers but awesome car, no rust, runs really well. Will get my nephew through uni (up and down the SI to home) and be a great first car for someone after that.
      
      Yeah there is quite a difference between 20 yr old cars in south Auckland and other parts of the country.

    Folk ask me why I don’t upgrade. I tell them:
    
    – I would get $1500 for it if I was lucky
    – I know its service history – every small problem gets fixed before it turns into a big problem
    – It has a high spec engine and plenty of power
    – It has never let me down
    
    Of course, one day it will suffer something major and that will be the end. But until then I am keeping it. I have better thigs to spend money on than a stupid EV.

        I change the oil and oil filters regularly. There is no rust. Another thing is don’t ignore the transmission. Flush the transmission and replace the fluid every 40,000 km. In these older cars the transmission often goes and that is the end.

      Likewise my 2007 Subaru Legacy B sport H 6cylider 3 ltr. station wagon- with adjustable power/economy settings. I’ve just put a new set of tyres on it, new brakes & discs next week, & in June/July a new torque converter, which should eliminate the low rev. vibration when applying power at 1500 – 2000 rpm. Otherwise, its as good as a new one, and a better looking vehicle than the new ones.
      I’m keeping it till I go out in a box. 🙂

While the Biden administration is casting around for candidates for Government roles conditional on them being LBGTQ ‘women of colour’ we are experiencing our own version of conscious bias. If you are running any sort of competition in the Arts, dispensing grants, making status awards (NZ of the year etc) the winner should preferably Maori (The award to Stephen O’Regan well after his use-by-date was ridiculous), or if a Maori cannot be found then reward an LBGTQ female.
Stale, pale, males need not apply. There seems to me no acknowledgement of the conscious bias; just mutual backslapping; the woke agenda has been served.

I was just thinking about vindictive David Parker and his desire to tax the wealthy. I then had a look in the Charities Commission website and saw 29 companies associated with Ngai Tahu which are charities including Ngai Tahu Property, seafood, tourism etc. There are 19 charities associated with Tainui. I didn’t look any further as it would have upset breakfast. As well as Gloriavale and sanitarium, might not some of those supposed charities be looked at too?

I see that Gloriavale has paid recently paid tax because of changes in the tax laws applying to charities;
‘ changes introduced by Inland Revenue (IRD), which meant businesses controlled by charities now have to be registered charities themselves to obtain tax-exempt status.’
These changes are welcome but do not go far enough; the tax exempt status of ‘charities’ is a massive rort.
Why should iwi and churches operate businesses that are tax free?. In my view the commercial operations should pay company tax on profits and if shareholders want to be a charity they can disburse donations out of profits after tax is paid. Charity status has been granted to Iwi and churches (Seventh Day Adventist (Sanitarium) in particular) because they distribute funds to ‘good causes’ but these causes are usually within their own organization or whanau (supposedly having ‘community benefit). How is this different from me paying tax on my income and distributing some of the meagre leftover to my children and grandchildren for educational purposes? Can I get tax free status also?.
Not to mention that tax free status gives iwi and church businesses an unfair advantage over competitors.

  Charitable purpose is limited to the relief of poverty, the advancement of education,
  or religion, or anything else that benefits the community. I would think that precludes any commercial enterprise.
  
  Non-commercial enterprises, like charity shops where volunteers sell donated goods to raise money for a charitable purpose are presumably not what you want to stop.

  Businesses that operate as charities should be transitioned into the same refund policy as do charitable individuals (everyone else). After paying tax on income and profit, tax refunds are only issued after presentation of audited receipts for the charitable donations/services which have been provided.     I was thinking more along the lines of the business operation pays taxes on its profits like every other business does. What the owning charity then chooses to do with their tax paid profits is up to them – reinvest in the business, or draw them out to use for their charitable purpose. No tax refunds required (unless the business has donated to another charity, in which case it would, of course, have an auditable receipt).

  Steve, we both know that prostate cancer isn’t “sexy” and headline-grabbing, like breast cancer or cervical cancer. That’s because the vast majority of prostate cancer victims are elderly men, who are basically viewed as expendable.
  
  My father died from prostate cancer which had metastisised to his spine. He was only 72 when he died. Because of his disease, prostate cancer is something I’ve taken some interest in. Generally, it’s a disease you die with, not of, but Dad was one of the less fortunate.
  
  Something like 70% of men over 70 will have some malignant cells in their prostate, going up to more than 90% of men over 90. But you won’t find many slogans, snazzy marketing and tug-at-the-heartstrings functions for prostate cancer, and in the meantime, men will keep dying.

“The Biggest Global Power Grab We Have Seen in Our Lifetimes”: How Serious is the Threat From the WHO Pandemic Treaty?

Later this month the World Health Assembly, the governing body of the World Health Organisation, will meet in Geneva, Switzerland, and among its business are amendments put forward by the U.S. Government to the pandemic treaty, the International Health Regulations 2005.

The process of creating a new pandemic treaty or amending the existing one was announced in December (though the origins go back earlier) and was a response to a call from governments, including the U.K, for a strengthened global pandemic strategy coordinated by the WHO.

In a consensus decision aimed at protecting the world from future infectious diseases crises, the World Health Assembly today agreed to kickstart a global process to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organisation to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said the decision by the World Health Assembly was historic in nature, vital in its mission, and represented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen the global health architecture to protect and promote the well-being of all people.

Many are concerned, however, that the U.S. amendments will transfer significant sovereignty over public health policy to an unelected and unaccountable global organisation.

Michele Bachmann, Dean of the Robertson School of Government at Regent University and a former U.S. Congressman, has sounded the alarm about what she sees as a dangerous power grab by an unaccountable organisation with a poor track record in thrall to communist China.

If you know little about this treaty, then I recommend some research. If implemented, the neutering of our national sovereignty will make He Puapua look like totalitarian amateur-hour.

TV News says the Govt will change the rules so some employers can pay imported workers less than The Minimum Wage.

So let’s have some sympathy for our fellow citizens working in those industries: Tourism and Hospitality.
I know one of them: her chances of getting a pay rise have just been sunk; her hopes of getting on the property ladder — pushed away.
Any dreams of starting a family and living above the poverty line? Not even possible.

How about sticking up for N.Z. workers, Labour Party?

At the same time the red witch says she aims to eliminade poverdy. To do that you have to keep the average wage not too far above the minimum wage and the dole. Happened to hear ZB’s Political Reporter Jason Walls, telling those two drongos who host the Noon-4 show, that he found Y20,000 outside a Gucci store in Japan during his recent media trip with the PM.

When they asked him if he handed it in, Jase said…. “No, he actually split it with a colleague, and they converted it to NZD when they got back home”.

Needless to say, both of the pathetic wokesters said they would have handed it in to the police!

My partner just received a newsletter from one of his banks….looks like Westpac are very very gloomy on the housing market.
Saying first impressions for April, show sales were down by more than 33% compared to this time last year, and they’re now expecting prices to drop by at least 15%. Listings have increased by a massive 50%!!

Great for first home buyers of course, at it’s mainly affecting homes in the $2m or under bracket.
