        Because mike doesn’t have the nous to contribute anything substantive (except perhaps the occasional tedious waffle about some obscure matter of military history), all he can do is snipe at intelligent contributions and post his hilarious “World X Day” dad jokes. I wouldn’t elevate him to “troll” status, because trolls are clever, whereas mike’s efforts are all pretty banal and low-tier. The best response, instead of downticking him, is to neither up or downtick him. The hit a man’s* ego takes when nobody even bothers to engage with a comment is profound.

  Climate change is the new word for “Cooking the Books”.
  Incidently I bank with HSBC and find their security second too none.
  It was originally formed as a bank for the opium “traders”.
  Also the most targeted and fined Bank probably in the World.
  Alarm Bells ring when you “Must” invest “ethical” investing, Think AMP and no Fossil fuels as an example for Kiwisaver etc.

      It’s earliest history was in Honkers , then expanding to Shanghai and then many other places in the east .
      
      But yes it has moved its HQ to London.
      
      As to the opium , yes in the early days that was a major commodity sold into China , but so were many many other things and the traders of all manner of goods needed a bank .
      
      And so the bank was set up in the 1860’s in HK , some 20 years after the First Opium war.

    I just wish all of the so-called emergencies that keep cropping up didn’t always without exception benefit those who shout the loudest about them and who also determine and propose the solution. That seems to be the discernible pattern.
    
    If I was a sceptical person, I’d have to conclude that the mass of people are being lied to and manipulated for the benefit of the few, the same few who benefit no matter what form the latest emergency takes.

    Ice core data suggests that the earth has experienced massive climate upheavals in the past, both extreme warming and extreme cooling. This data is for a 20K period from the present day, but in far earlier epochs, both the global CO2 and temperatures were much higher than even today. The key point is the relative increases and decreases.

    Here we are in a relatively stable situation for the last 6 or 7 thousand years (see the furthest right side of the graph above), which has been conducive to the rise of civilisation.
    
    Two questions naturally present themselves:
    
    1) What caused the huge swings in the past (because it cannot have been the present bogey man, human industry)?; and
    
    2) Given the past swings and the current multi-millennia period of stability, why did the climate never “runaway,” in either direction, when it was going between extremes in the past?

    As a small nation with very little effect on global emissions (arguably net zero emissions given our export of 80% of our food product), we need to honestly evaluate whether or not our policies are going to make a stitch of difference to global temperature in the near to medium term.
    
    We then need to compare the cost of the potentially futile attempt to the reasonable costs of adaptation.
    
    BECAUSE if we fail in our attempt to change the climate and bankrupt ourselves in the process we will be too poor to pursue once affordable adaptation policies.

  They only have to look back at the last time labor were in power over there. Howard leaves office with $30 billion in the bank, K Rudd blows the lot within 3 months giving everyone a cheque for $900. K Rudd, and then Gillard, go on a spending binge and run up billions in debt leaving the incoming coalition a mess to clean up. They then struggle to try and balance the books by cutting back wasteful schemes and unnecessary spending, upsetting all the freeloaders, then lose to Labor. Now Anthony is in he’s already talking about posting out cheques to everyone again and billions upon billions of new spending. Been going on in Australia forever. Labor get in and blow money then the Coalition get in and have to fix it up and the cuts make them unpopular so they vote Labor again who blow the cash and run up debt so they vote the coalition again. The big thing is almost all western democracies run this way and always have (think Thatcher and other people’s money). One sides financially responsible and the other isn’t.

40 percent of 16 and 17-year-olds vote in a way that’s different to their parents in countries like Scotland and Wales that already have that voting age.

      We have a Young Adult Court here in Gisborne… for 18-25 year olds.
      
      The justification for this court is that many young adults have limited executive functioning (thinking,memory and focus).
      
      Speaking virtually at the launch in the Gisborne Courthouse yesterday, Chief District Court Judge Heemi Taumaunu said research had shown the brains of young adults were not fully matured. Their brains continued to develop in response to environmental conditions.

      MM: Yours is an oft quoted comparison, but IMO it is a false one.
      
      For a start, to the best of my knowledge, no western country drafts soldiers aged 16. Secondly, and much more importantly, soldiers are specifically trained not to think or question, but simply to do what they are told “theirs is not to reason why…” and all that. Thirdly, soldiering is a activity that is best suited to young men (and sadly women these days) whose primary quality is that they are physically fit and healthy, and able to do physical things for longer that older people cannot.
      
      Voting for who is going to run a country is a completely different animal; it requires – or at least that is the theory – thinking and reasoning; the ability to test one theory against another, and work out the most convincing. It also requires some ability to work out who is the most likely to be truthful; to be a person of integrity; to have similar values to you.
      
      All of the above are precisely not what is required in a soldier.

        No, not quite David.
        I enlisted in NZ’s Military at age 15yrs, 3mths which was the minimum at the time. By the time I was old enough to vote (21yrs), I had already been involved in two conflicts (Malay Peninsular and Borneo).
        Politicians make the rules and the military are compelled to comply. Politicians send Military Personnel into harm’s way, not the Military.

I could agree to full criminal responsibility kicking in at 25, as long as that was also the voting age and the age at which you could legally purchase and consume anything which might affect the working of your brain (like alcohol or marijuana, for example).

      But I’m a biologist, and know a fair bit about farts..and it worries me not in the slightest that folks are aware of the fact that I fart, and depending on my diet, the farts can be smelly, stinky or downright offensive.

        I made a simple observation (@8:27 there were about 5 comments up on screen and all had been double down-ticked (at least).)
        
        If you refer back through the archive you will see I’m pretty happy with downticking, because:
        a) It indicates KB is not an echo-chamber

        b) along with up-ticking, it is a useful device for seeing at a glance which posts I’ve read.

  Back in the 1940’s when the first “full and final settlements” were negotiated between Princess Te Puea and Peter Fraser, a faction in the tribe wanted the then substantial compensation payments – 6000 pounds per year for 30 years – to go into a special fund which would only be used for two purposes: to buy farm land in the tribal rohe when it came up for sale, and to send promising Tainui to uni.
  
  If that had been how the money was used, Tainui would own half the Waikato now, and who knows what skilled and educated leaders they would have produced. Who vetoed the idea? The Mahutas…who also insisted on a one of payment of 600 pounds – what a senior lawyer earned in a year in 1944 – for King Koroki’s “personal use”.

      The long and short of it is the Tainui could have become as successful as the Ngai Tahu are now – and also, as I said in my original comment, own half the Waikato.
      
      My research for a series of articles I wrote 30 years ago – published in the Dominion back then – showed that 6000 pounds was the price of a good size dairy farm in the 40’s, or several million dollars in todays money.

  That is a really great essay Lee. A philosophical look at the reasons for, among other things, the rise of illiberal liberalism. Much of what he says in relation to the covid panic also applies to the climate (non) debate.

    There’re significant natural gas resources there. Two of the largest ones are onshore Yuzivska field in the Donbas region and offshore Skifska field. Both are not fully developed due to the political factors.

  Your partner was grizzling about being stuck over on the North Shore yesterday due to some protest on the Bridge.
  It seems they were anti three waters if that makes him feel better.
  
  We were caught on the Mangere Bridge an hour or so ago, stuck behind a couple of police cars.
  One of them was weaving left & right with a sign on the roof Do Not Overtake
  Incredibly someone in what was clearly not a police car was trying to pass them in the bus lane.
  The police pulled off at the next exit, turned off the sign, lights & sirens and tried to blend sheepishly into the other traffic. Drama over.

Was watching a body cam walk around central London taken about 2 weeks ago on a brilliant Spring day. The crowds (with sound) appeared good natured and thoroughly enjoying the sunshine and the food outlets were very busy. There were many families and the kids were smiling and obviously happy to take in the many touristy sites like Buckingham Palace and St James. What was an obvious difference to NZ lay with the lack of face masks, perhaps one in a hundred wore one. I was immediately reminded of what we were like pre covid, faces uncovered, smiles obvious and free. We are now a sad and compliant country.

Left wing economists BERL have an article about the infamous Black Budget of 1957 in which they opine that it was actually a great budget and Nordmeyer was not a naughty boy but just misunderstood.
The classic bit of self delusion is this final paragraph:
“The story of the Black Budget teaches us that decisive budgets can be unpopular, even if they are technically successful. Budgets are perceived to be tied to the values of the party which implements them, and this perception can sway the political battlefield for decades to come. It is doubtful that we will see another Black Budget from either side of parliament. Being decisive is never easy, or popular.”
I guess the budgets of 1984, 1985 or even 1991 were not decisive enough for BERL. I can’t imagine they would deliberately rewrite history.

I see where Albanese is already saying that over time, government departments will be renamed to include indigenous meanings, and that all Newsreaders will be required to include Aboriginal words every now and again.
