Is she brave enough to call for children to be placed with the best foster parents, regardless of race ‘compatibility’?

  She’s 100% part of the problem. Instead of focusing on holding the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff accountable, she should be laying into her tangata whenua supporters and telling them to stop neglecting and beating their kids.

    IIRC, OT have a directive to go around family members first, then around the wider relationship group to look for foster parents. I believe there have been issues like this before, but they weren’t as serious.
    If this is correct, then it isn’t OT that is to blame. It is the government policy – from memory one of Special K’s.

  I would have more respect for Ms Ngawera Packer and her party if, instead of expecting the Government to solve this problem, she actually showed some leadership with “her people” by suggesting they should grow up and stop bashing their kids.

    I still remember the farcical situation with Kahui twins and the wider family wall of silence. Remember Pita Sharples having talks to get them to do the right thing and nothing happened? (I still wish the entire pack of them had all been charged as obstructing justice). It never seems to change does it? How many times a year do we see a story on some gorgeous smiling kids being killed by those that should be there to protect them?

      An on-line “chat group” I visited at the time was all for “doing something”.
      Was quickly shut down due to threats of visits from gangs.

    Te Pati Maori are a real problem for Labour as they are a threat to safe Labour electorates.
    While Te Pati Maori may well sit on the left, they would make Maori issues even more ‘front and centre’ if they were part of government.
    Their being is solely to focus on issues that affect Maori voters.
    At what stage do electorate voters become concerned by being represented by a ‘List’ Government.
    Maybe the ‘two ticks’ option is what makes MMP a worry when considering voting systems.

  This case is different from the usual, as Malachi’s family wanted him, and thought that he was going into the care of his aunty… but the “State” let his (eventual) killer walk out of the Court room with Malachi and Granted Michaela Barriball all the rights and $$$$ as a Guardian.
  
  On that day, then 4-year-old Malachi arrived at Tauranga District Court with his mother, and left with his killer. The family had thought she was pleading not guilty, and did not expect her to be jailed that day.

    Any accountability from OT there?
    Make her pay it back when she gets out of prison.

  All those missionary accounts of similar behaviour in traditional pre-colonial Maori society were clearly Christianist propaganda!
  
  And, don’t forget the “lies” about cannibalism, slavery, destruction of ecological habitats, extermination of native species, etc etc.
  
  Pre-European Maori culture was a place of harmony and balance, with loving people at one with nature, and it took a whole village to raise the mokopuna…… not least because it was hard for a single family to eat a whole one.

    It must not be allowed to succeed and all the other race division stuff including the so called and un defined “principles” must be rolled back , binned and we must have a proper , equal before the law for all citizens , liberal democracy .

  Benedict, I remember walking Lake Waikaremoana a few years after Tuhoe took over the administration of Te Urewera National Park and I was quite astonished how run down so many of the huts were even back then – and the reluctance of Tuhoe to fix them.
  
  Perhaps the real reason the huts are being removed is because Tuhoe are either unable or unwilling to maintain them, so they have simply decided to remove them in order to save themselves further embarrassment.

    The back country huts are in pristine condition and are kept that way by hunters and trampers who have stayed, repaired & cleaned for generations. The maintenance thing is a smokescreen for saying vistors aren’t welcome.

  You can tell what they’re doing, and why, very easily. If it were really about replacing huts that were at the end of their useful life with brand new fantastic ones, you’d build those before demolishing the old ones.
  
  Not this band of clueless wreckers – they’re dismantling and burning the huts, whilst promising (with a forked tongue) to build modern dry and warm huts. Only they don’t say how many, where they will go, or when they’ll be built. I expect none of them to be built, and that Tuhoe will make up some BS reason, something about colonialism I guess.
  
  They have said they want to remove all western influence from the Ureweras, and aided by a wet, woke, useless DOC and abetted by the MSM, they’ll do it.

    Who can blame Tuhoe, the National government gave them control of a former National Park. If it were me I’d want to keep all the Unwashed (or in this case maybe washed) out too.
    Either it’s their private playground, a great place for elicit substance industry or a business opportunity to soak the mega-rich and they get taxpayer funding on top.
    Tuhoe are bloody genius negotiators, no point in blaming them for getting a great deal, blame the racist White Savior progressives who gave it to them if you don’t like it.

      This part:

        I suspect Finlayson has no regard at all for people who hunt or would like to enjoy the outdoors, perhaps Tuhoe negotiators weren’t such geniuses but Finlayson was eager to decolonize the Uraweras.
        It will throw up challenges in the future, the area is likely to become a harbour for noxious weeds, pests and diseases like bovine TB.
        There’s no way the authorities will take a heavy hand like they do with private landowners, we might see Tuhoe deliberately harbouring noxious organisms so that the government will pay hundreds of millions koha in order to combat them.

        IMO, Chris Finlayson’s actions were akin to feeding Rabbits with Lettuces, where the more you give em, the more they want/demand.
        The whole Maori Grievance Industry could have been nipped in the bud by the Labour Party in 1975 when they established the ToW Act.
        Since then, numerous Govt Ministers from all Political persuasions appointed to the ToW Tribunal have been growing Lettuces and the Rabbits are gloating about their weight increases.

  Ben, there have been several articles written about this. And DOC people have said they haven’t been allowed on the land to undertake repairs. All because the Tuhoe wanted their own youngsters to do the work. So get the money for the upkeep (I seem to recall gas hobs or similar were due to be replaced in several huts) from Government, and then use it to pay their own to do the work. And lo, it turned out that they couldn’t get anyone who could be bothered to go in and do the work. Because of course, there is no wifi, no fried chicken etc. And here we stand. Maori saying they are run down and should be demolished after Maori have let them become run down. Grifters since forever.

The intrusion into every aspect of the minutia of our lives by bureaucracy is suffocation. It is an increasing rush to totalitarianism. We are effectively being run, not by politicians, but by the “deep state”. It isn’t some shady cabal meeting in smoke filled rooms. That’s a construct of the deep state itself to tie the term to the domain of the “tin foil hat conspiracy theorists” and therefore delegitimise it as a concept. Politicians come and go. Bureaucracies endure. National need to take a very large axe to the cancer currently embedded in Wellington and which is strangling the life out of the country.

Wayne Brown in Auckland appears to be on the right track. He’s the first politician in many years who, certainly for now, has impressed me.

  any future “Right Wing” government that claims it’s a “Big Tent” for conservative, classical liberal and perhaps even a slight tint of libertarian thinking, owes its voters to not just slowly reduce government employee numbers but reduce the number, size and regulatory power of the state institutions they inhabit.
  
  If they don’t then they’ll just be weaponised further with vast sums of money and bodies by a future Labour-Green government. Incidentally – for those National people who only care about government spending as a % of GDP and taxes – that will also put paid to any future tax cuts. Actually that’s almost the case now: the giant spend-fest of lockdowns means you can probably look forward to new taxes and tax increases from a future National-ACT government. They’ll have no choice because they’ll have allowed Labour-Green to make the big choices for them.

In their press release calling for accountability over the killing of Malachi Subecz, the Maori Party informs us that the killer (Michaela Barriball) was related to the co-defendant of Malachi’s mother.

On the 5th October, The Head of Oranga Tamariki promised NZ that a report of his Department’s involvement (lack of involvement) would be ready in
two weeks (October 19th).

      It probably doesn’t matter much without the government stopping borrowing and handing it out. It is giving with one hand and taking with the other. Austerity sooner or later is the only way, the printed money needs to be removed from the economy either by inflating its value away or by increasing interest rates quantitative tightening and a reduction in government spending. Either way, government spending needs to be lower than inflation so that the price of goods and services can re-balance to the money supply, if they dont the NZD will crash and inflation will keep going up, even with increasing interest rates, going into a classic hyperinflation.
      
      Governments think they can magic up money to help people cope with inflation, which of course just increases demand driving prices up, causing more government spending to ‘help’ people, causing prices to increase. Counter intuitively this also drives supply down, imports become expensive because of the dollar, and anything local becomes untenable because suppliers can not afford to buy what is required to build products or services because their profits are eroded though inflation quicker than they can sell things.

    NZ is not a services economy, sure there is an internal services money-go-round to generate tax and muh GDP, but make no mistake, NZ is a primary production economy. Milk, meat, wool, forestry, horticulture, aquaculture etc. Virtually (not all we do do other things, but they are comparatively small) everything else is just to support primary production and government. Without primary production NZ would be a fairly good way down the 3rd world list with nearly no ability to import anything at all.

  NZ has always been vulnerable to international oil prices, as the oil shocks of late last century demonstrated.
  Even enough oil was produced locally that wouldn’t change because we would be paying whatever price the oil companies could get.
  Furthermore
  Even before the refinery was closed almost half of our petrol was refined offshore. Less so for diesel.
  BTW
  Yesterday I bought some 91 at $2.25 which was more than a dollar off the peak I paid a few months ago.

Wellington night life seems to be finally recovering after the disastrous covid lockdowns, just spent a couple of days in the big smoke and it’s been humming. It was capped off by a stunning gig last night by British rockers The Darkness, up at the old union hall at Victoria University. It was the penultimate show of their tour down under, and what a concert! They’re playing their last gig tonight in Auckland – they’re white hot at the moment, don’t miss them if you can get there!

🔴 Over the years many Labour MPs have triggered by-elections for one reason or another, but Labour’s motto remains “do as we say, don’t do as we do.”
Until 2 weeks ago the PM and the Deputy PM were out in Wellington promoting Labour MP Paul Eagle for Wellington Mayoralty and had no issue with a potential by-election if he had won. Given that the PM had already saved up money for the Rongotai by-election but didn’t end up needing it as Paul lost the Mayoralty, technically there is no added cost for the Hamilton West by-election as the money has already been kept aside by our fiscally responsible government.
Here’s a list of by-elections triggered by Labour in the past, with which they have had absolutely no issue spending taxpayer’s money:
▪️This photo is from the 2017 by-election in Mt Albert where I door knocked for then candidate Jacinda Ardern who went on to win an electorate seat for the first time. The by-election was called because Labour MP & LEADER David Shearer resigned.
▪️In the last few months Labour’s current MP Paul Eagle has been getting paid from taxpayers purse while he was running as a Mayoral candidate for Wellington. He also used the MP funding to send a letter to 20,000 houses in Rongotai asking for what local issues mattered the most to people – this was within days of announcing his bid for Mayoralty. Not only this, if Paul had won, a by-election for MP would have been triggered in the Rongotai electorate. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson went out of their way to endorse Paul Eagle for Mayoralty because they wanted their friend and Labour governing council member Fleur Fitzsimmons to run in the by-election and take over Paul’s Rongotai seat.
▪️Former Labour LEADER Helen Clark resigned in 2009 to trigger a by-election when she left for a new career at the UN. The election was itself won by David Shearer, who as I note above also left for his career at the UN in Sudan triggering another by-election in 2017 which was won by Jacinda Ardern.
▪️Paul Eagle had also resigned as the Deputy Mayor of Wellington because he ran for Parliament as a Labour candidate in Rongotai, and won resulting in a by-election in 2017 for Wellington City Council.
▪️Labour MP and former Labour LEADER Phil Goff ran for Auckland Mayoralty and triggered a by-election in Mt Roskill electorate in 2016 which was then won by Michael Wood.
▪️Labour Minister & MP Lianne Dalziel resigned from Christchurch East electorate to run for Mayor triggering a by-election in 2013 which was won by Poto Williams from Labour.
▪️Since stepping down as the Speaker Trevor Mallard has been sitting in the House with no Select Committee duties, no Bills to speak on, no constituent work. In the last 2 months he has been paid well over $25,000 to just enjoy his retirement. Soon he will be on the gravy train to be the Ambassador of NZ to Ireland. And don’t forget he is on the old Parliament contract which means he gets free business class flights for life.
▪️Also a quick reminder of government’s failed recent spending
– $51m spent on axed Auckland harbour cycling bridge project
– $500k in office rent paid after Auckland cycle crossing canned
– $66 million on Dominion Rd Light Rail report – $44million out of this is on external consultants
– $350 million on TVNZ/RNZ merger
– $200 million on Te Pukenga botched polytech reform
🔴 Just like MPs of Labour Caucus have been talking to me in private often leaking information, the members of Labour’s governing council have also been in touch with me of the course of action Labour is going to take. I was advised that because I have become a thorn in Labour’s backside by continually raising issues in the House, Labour plans to take a step by step approach to sideline me. The next step being the invoking of Waka Jumping rule to remove me from Parliament. But given the current state of affairs, Labour and the PM will wait until next year to invoke this rule 6 months before the General Election so that a by-election does not have to take place in Hamilton West. This is another way of silencing me and stifling democracy by taking away the voice of people of Hamilton West.
Based on this information and after spending time in the electorate talking to my constituents since I wrote my Op-Ed in August, I had no option but to resign. This has unfortunately triggered a by-election but it means that instead of being without an MP for 6 months as Labour know wants, the people of Hamilton will be able to elect an MP to continue to represent them.
I am running as a candidate in the by-election because I do want to send a message to the government that you can’t silence the voice of the common man – you have tried to shut me up at every avenue but I will continue to fight and stand up for myself, for the people of Hamilton West and New Zealanders across the country.

I’m curious on what Labours strategy will be for their election campaigning next year as I can only see 2 things they could possibly ‘champion’ and run with….COVD and smearing National/Luxon (MSM have already been smearing Luxon, watch the Labour party ramp it up) with policy/laws they have no intention of implementing but will be headline stuff (National will cut benefits, National will raise GST etc etc this kinda outlandish stuff)
They CANNOT campaign on the big 4 platforms (Economy/Housing/Homelessness and Health) as all are worse than 2017 and worse since 2020!
Going to be a dirty election from the left, they have nothing else!

  For goodness sakes – there is no great secret to kids success. Why are Asian students generally at the top of the class? Are they born superior? Of course not – it’s because they generally tend to have parents that give an actual damn about their kids schoolwork and make sure that homework is always done, extra work is always done as they realise a good education and hard work is the key to a successful life. It’s about valuing education – not race. It just so happens that a lot of asian parents really value education. Is it really a surprise that hard work and parental encouragement results in top marks?
  
  The stats are the same regardless of race – if you went to Scotland, Ireland or any north European country where it’s less multicultural, the splits are similar between top and bottom – it’s more about socio-economic factors than race (I’ve always found that NZ based race stats are proxies for socio-economic but that’s another argument).
  
  In these countries where it’s less about race (or race can’t be used as the excuse because it’s less diverse), poor kids tend to have parents (or parent and hanger on) that don’t value education, so don’t put a big focus on it – big surprise their kids don’t value it and the cycle repeats. Parents who value education, tend to encourage their kids and, big surprise, they tend to do well at school (then university etc).
  
  The problem is that it is just so much easier to blame ‘the system’ I guess.

Smart parents average smarter kids and kids with thick parents are mostly thick too.
    
    Until this horrible reality is accepted by delusional apologists pretending that human brains are a unique exception to universal rules of genetic variation and evolution, society will continue it’s worsening generational stratification by intelligence, with kids of poor (thick) parents mostly irrevocably doomed to shitty lives with poor prospects from conception.

Why did the Waka CEO need to mention in the press release they were consulting with Māori and Iwi. Do they not use the bus the same way everyone else does, would they need a special culturally appropriate transport card to use a bus?

There is a new, large Japanese study that is showing the increased risk of myocarditis death is not just in the young. It is in all age groups.

Conclusion SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was associated with higher risk of myocarditis death, not only in young adults but also in all age groups including the elderly. Considering healthy vaccinee effect, the risk may be 4 times or higher than the apparent risk of myocarditis death. Underreporting should also be considered. Based on this study, risk of myocarditis following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination may be more serious than that reported previously.

I ask the year 9 pupils/students I have for my volunteer literacy stint how much essay/story writing they have done and the answer is invariably none, or a blank stare (wondering what the hell I’m talking about).

I recall having to write stories/ pieces in primary school on a regular basis…..”What I did in the holidays”, “my trip to the museum”, book reviews, etc…
all were read and marked by the teacher.

In my 2 years at a primary boarding school, I had to write 2 letters/week home to my father… one was read and corrected (if needed) by the class-room teacher; the other was always private.

When I went secondary teaching 20 years ago, my Yr 12 (6th form) Physics students had to submit a written report on a research investigation.
I recall one student querying why he had got a high grade when it was covered with red ink corrections….
I explained his physics and experimental work were good (hence the grade mark), but his spelling, grammar, punctuation and paragraphing were not.

He replied that I was the first teacher who had ever corrected his written work.

I think some of our teachers have been doing a lousy job with instructing their pupils how to write clearly, let alone providing them with opportunities to write.

  I received two emails from the Ministry of Education this week, both inviting me to “facilitator lead training”. There’s no hope for students when teachers can’t spell, and it appears there aren’t even any standards in this area in the Ministry.

        However, what you wrote is probably also ok….

Following yesterday’s post here, Bring Back Boris, it’s always refreshing to read Samizdata’s take on the Tory disaster, Controlled Flight Into Terrain. I liked this comment on the post:

From the outside, the appearance is that much of the problem in the UK is the same as the one in the US–The supposed “conservatives” are merely the opposition party wearing a different outfit in order to fool the rubes. Neither the Tories nor the Republicans really believe in the dog food they’re selling the public, and they won’t eat it themselves, either.

This creates a certain element of public cognitive dissonance, because what they say isn’t what they do, in power. So, you have this constant cycle of the two parties ineffectively opposing their supposed “enemies”, then blundering into power, where they then do… Exactly what they railed against. Which then leads to them being thrown out of power, empowering the left yet again, who screws things up by the numbers, and the cycle continues… It will go on until it doesn’t, and then it’ll be the whole sorry edifice that crashes.

I venture to predict that the US is going to see a “sea change that isn’t, really” with the voting in November. They’ll get a Republican-majority Congress, which will then proceed to do nothing at all about any of the Democratic Party-created issues, and we’ll have more of the same until the public grows disgusted with them and throws them out of power, where they’ll go back to their most comfortable position, being “opposition that really… Isn’t.”

Eventually, enough people will see through the charade, and they’ll all be thrown out. Likely, well after they blow everything up.

Pays to have influential mates.
The wife of a guy I worked will taught at a school owned by a high powered policeman. He gave my mate a business card and wrote something on it, which gave him immunity from being ticketed on the highways.
And it worked.
Small thing, but that’s the sort of corruption you read about in the newspapers from top to bottom.
