      Soft! It’s just a little breeze and precipitation. And the cake tin is substantially warmer than was the Millard Stand at the old Athletic Park. Up there in a southerly was colder Scott Base.

        Mikenmildagain gets lots and lots of downticks from me, so his above erudite accurate comment comes with some degree of surprise. The height of the Millard Stand and being so close to the sideline made it the best place to appreciate the positional placing of a team.

        I’ve watched a couple of tests from the top deck of the Millard stand, and lived to tell the tale. Our favourite seats always used to be the blocks at the front of the Millard Stand.
        
        My first test at Athletic Park was the 1971 Lions. Dad and I came down on the early train from Palmerston North, had a feed at the greasy spoon cafe at the station, then headed up to Athletic Park. When we arrived around 7am the queue at the city end was almost a kilometre from the gates, so we headed to the southern end where the queue was only a few hundred metres at that hour. It was a great day out.
        
        But yes, I am getting soft, and selective. Having just got over the flu however, I have no desire to freeze my ageing arse off again!

        July 12 marks the Dutch King William’s victory at the Boyne 1690 . A day held in great importance not by ‘the Irish’ but in certain Unionist circles.
        
        In fact the day is universally important as it helped cement the victory of the principles of parliamentary democracy over French style autocratic rule embodied in the loser, the English Catholic King James II. And as such is an integral part of our constitution , which is under threat from the Ardern regime .

        The camera box at the top of the Millard stand (accessed by a ladder) was the place to be. The first time it was used was in a southerly blizzard and holding the vibrating cameras steady with frozen hands was a challenge. The footage was somewhat fuzzy, lol.

        The Twelfth should serve as a date for reconciliation across a united Ireland, as Michael McDowell called for some years ago.

        Crucially, membership of a lodge can give a sense of `belonging’–an important factor in a cold, technological age when many working-class people feel increasingly alienated and rejected. This social aspect of Orangeism has been seriously neglected by historians and sociologists, who prefer to concentrate on the overtly political or religious.
        
        And the date actually marks the Battle of Aughrim (12 July 1691) rather than the Battle of the Boyne (1 July 1690).

        Interesting to see that a few of the Kiwiblog clan were at that 1971 Lions Test. We, too, were on the upper deck of the Millard.
        
        Not a good day for the All Blacks who were 0-13 when Laurie Mains scored a try (but duffed a simple conversion grrr). I remember turning round and looking up to the TV Commentary box and catching the eye of Cliff Morgan who, all of a sudden, didn’t look QUITE as confident of a Lions success as he’d been a wee bit earlier…

        The first test I ever went to was at Athletic Park, from the top deck of the Millard Stand when the All Blacks played the French in 1961.
        That wasn’t a southerly breeze. It was a bloody cyclone. I believe that the ground had been sold out but only about half the seats were taken. The rest of the ticket holders had the sense to stay home. It was really scary up there in the stand with the gale force winds. As a first year University student I didn’t have any sense of self preservation of course.

        The Millard Stand was glorious.
        
        However given that 5 year old buildings can now be demolished after suddenly becoming an earthquake risk, imagine what the classification of the Millard Stand would be now, given it used to wobble if enough people stomped their feet.

        Sat on the top deck of the Millard Stand for the famous French game.
        Probably wouldn’t be allowed now as part of it wasn’t completed.
        Memorable experience – watching hats disappear into the distance while still about six floors above the ground.
        Sat in the Railway Station cafeteria eating buttered toast to fill in the morning and keep warm.

      It may have been cold on top of the Millard for the test in 1971 but it was a spectacular day (weather wise) on the Southern terraces near where Mains scored his try. There actually used to be good days in winter back then too. Just a pity the game was effectively over after 15 minutes.

In a sign of coal’s enduring near-term demand despite accelerating global action on emissions, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed earnings from coal shipments jumped to $14.7 billion during May, surpassing iron ore for the first time in 13 years.

    It is important to remember that there are various types of coal. As I understand it we have different quality coal in different areas. Some of it is good for power and some good for steel making.

      rockape: I stand to be corrected, but IIRC we have an estimated 1500 (that’s fifteen hundred) years worth of coal…I do understand we have various different types of the stuff, from very high quality – for steel making – to the lowest, which isn’t much use at all..(again I stand to be corrected).

        The lowest, lignite, is used for generating power in Victoria, and in Germany. The deposits in Southland are big enough to provide all NZ’s electricity for four or five centuries.

    The issue is the Greens and RMA. Think Pike River and open cast.
    NZ Coal is the best in the World and used as Coking Coal for manly steel and gets a high premium.

      There are currently moves underway to reopen Spring Creek underground mine near Dunollie on the West Coast. This is a large resource in high grade coal very thick seams (relatively easily mined) that would contribute a great deal to our foreign exchange earnings and the local economy. I’m sure Labour and the Greens will find reasons to oppose the reopening though if exported this coal wouldn’t count against NZ’s carbon emission targets. In fact its export would enable lower emissions generation as it could substitute for much higher volumes of lower grade overseas coal.

True political leaders have vision and care little about who or how many follow. Being acceptable is subordinated to defending deeply held principles.

Political followers on the other hand have little vision other than gaining/retaining power. If principles get in the way of amassing support then those principle must be buried.

Adern is a political follower. So is Luxon. So was Key. So was Clark.

Having political followers of different team colours at the treasury benches government after government has, I believe, led to cynicism of the political process and of democracy itself. Cynicism leads to disengagement. Disengagement leads to lack of scrutiny. Lack of scrutiny leads to selfish, self-aggrandizing behaviour on the part of those who were elected to lead us.

This is where I believe we are today, and without some kind of circuit-breaker that’s where we’ll stay, drifting inexorably left as the political followers pander to the whims of the disengaged who anticipate having the government solve their life problems.

        That’s the problem: what happens when both choices are hopeless? There are any number of potential alternative options that aren’t Labour or National, but it is this intractable, unimaginative, mindless binary box-ticking that you embody that means we never get anywhere and are doomed to be lead into places we don’t want to be (as we are in the year 2022). There is nothing that says we must have a binary option, other than the ill-considered muscle-memory voting habits of dullards like you.

    G, I know you see Luxon as the great saviour, but he is nothing more than figurehead substitute. Yes, he may usher in some right-leaning policy, but there is no evidence that he has the stones to change New Zealand’s left-sliding trajectory.
    
    My advice: Long for more than a replacement for Ardern. While you and other tribal Nats are happy to simply wrestle power from Labour New Zealand’s outlook will continue to deteriorate.

        To become a CEO of a large multinational is almost by definition an indication of being a careerist yes-man who doesn’t have the imagination and vison to ever rock the boat too much. Managing is not the same as leading. How many great leaders of the past came out of the business community? Probably none. We need a political entrepreneur not a boring safe pair of hands. I don’t doubt that Luxon is talented, but he is not what the country needs in a time of distress.

    When the trend for at least 70 years has been a transition to global governance and ever-increasing centralisation of power, those at the heart of this emerging structure don’t want independent leaders who will deviate from the desired course. They just want managers. They are like the provincial governors to the emperor in Rome. Like Key, Luxon has been vetted and selected for the role and brought in for that purpose, just as Key was parachuted in by Wall Street out of nowhere to keep things moving in the same direction Clark was going.     The only reason I can see that the Maori caucus would want to replace Ardern is if they figured 2023 was lost already and planned to grab whatever assets, jobs, golden parachutes and government contracts they could get their hands on over the next year. While Labour will still lose in 23 with Ardern, without her Labour would be annihilated. Ardern is the lipstick on the pig that is Labour. They have fooled plenty over the five years of failure – remove the facade that Ardern offers and even the wilfully blind will see the Labour cabinet in all its naked glory.

    All that said, being a little older now, I now understand the ‘age makes wisdom’ thing. A young person could ‘report’ the news just fine but for commentary and understanding the minutia around politics I think someone with more life experience might be better. I see that Karl du Fresne has written about as to how Joanna Kidman ended up as co-director of the National Centre of Research Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism.

  I have no objection as such to people using Maori words, talking in Maori, whatever. What I do find annoying is what I consider to be the inappropriate use of Maori.
  
  One News is leading the charge here. Last week I heard an utterly useless report of a free trade agreement which covered kaimoana. My wife and I looked at each other, baffled. “What on earth is kaimoana?” we asked each other. We had to hit Live Pause, look up the word, eventually manage to spell it correctly and find the meaning, and finally return to the news story – by which time we had forgotten what it was about so had to rewind to remind ourselves.
  
  Using Maori words and language in certain contexts, such as printed magazines from the local council, is fine. Such material is generally not communicating anything of significant importance, and being printed is easier to put down and pick back up if you need to look up a word that you don’t understand. But using it in a TV news program, which is meant to be communicating significant events of world importance, is not appropriate. And that’s true whether it’s Maori, French, German, whatever. If you were to hear a news report talking about the upcoming “cruinniú comhairle” you would also miss the understanding and be left wondering what on earth the reporter was talking about.
  
  The use of Maori language in general does not bother me. The inappropriate use of Maori language in contexts where clear communication is important, does.

  My granddaughters come around sometimes and talk about going for a walk on the maunga.
  A few years ago I wouldn’t have known where they were going, but time moves along and we’re exposed to more and more te reo.
  I’ve got no problem with that. It’s a language of this land.
  I went to school and was taught French and Latin.
  French might make a bit of sense if we were in Europe, but bloody Latin.

    But using words that very few people understand, in a TV news program, which is meant to be communicating clearly and coherently, is inappropriate. If you are watching the news, your reason for doing so is to be updated on the day’s current events. That’s the purpose of the news. And if you actually have to stop the news broadcast and say, “Wait … what? There’s something happening across the motu? What on earth do they mean?”, then they have failed in their purpose.
    
    Or, maybe this is simply a reflection of the changing times, as you say. As fewer people actually get their news from the TV news programs, preferring instead to get it online, possibly the TV news channels see their relevance to a modern society eroding, and are thus desperately trying to keep afloat and maintain their funding by fulfilling the over-arching Maori component of the Public Interest Journalism Fund, rather than simply TELLING US THE DAMN NEWS.     Latin, for a monolingual English-speaker, is a very useful tool in learning Romance languages (French,Italian, Spanish, Romanian); and also German [for the grammar].
    
    You would have picked that Latin leg-up in your French studies.
    
    And knowing Latin, you would be aware of, inter alia, the word ‘agricola’ [farmer] resonating down thru the ages whenever you hear/see the English word ‘agriculture’ . Similar with femina, puer [boy – puerile], pulcher [beautiful – pulchritude] etc.

I taught some pretty funny looking squint -eyed Remmers kids at Little King’s, Mags, and some of the faithful at mass at St Michael’s on a Sunday weren’t exactly the model types. Sticky out ears were pretty much the norm on Vicky Ave, but it was the buck teeth on so many of the Remmers women that got me. Sheesh.

  National must sell of TVNZ / RNZ. There is no sense in the modern world for the government to own the media outlets that report on them.     An example – the ‘ute tax’ has been criticised by DPF. It is an idiotic policy for all the reasons I have set out on KB previously. Will the next Government abolish it? No. They will try to make it ‘fairer’, cheaper, more efficient, or whatever…
    
    Same as the new Health Authority.
    
    Education? While he may not like the idea, Education would be a great policy for David Seymour, if he were given the power to make changes.
    
    Massive growth in the public service? National will impose a ‘recruitment freeze’ (which creates problems) and try to wind it back by waiting. There are public service agencies that have increased by 300 percent in the last 5 years. I know one that has increased from 260 employees to over 1,000. The Christchurch Office has increased from about 5 staff to over 50 staff.
    
    With the will, it would be possible to make sweeping changes to New Zealand in 12 months. For example selling off RNZ and TVNZ, you don’t let the public service manage it – bring in some smart folk from offshore. They would have it done and dusted in 6 months.

      The “Ute Tax”. You are almost certainly right.
      
      It won’t be abolished since the tax on high emissions vehicles funds the grant on low emissions vehicles. However, I expect work related vehicles (farmers and tradies utes) where there is no practical alternative, will be exempt.
      
      As a broader point, because National has supported the overall emissions targets, it has to be serious about climate change issues. The vehicle emissions levy is working. The uptake of Hybrids and BEV has hugely increased. National can hardly support the emissions reductions targets and then go about dismantling all the things that will actually achieve the goal.
      
      I would also note it was a bit mischievous for David Seymour (on Q & A) to claim the 90 day policy as Act’s initiative. In fact I introduced a Members Bill on this issue in 2006. It got to Select Committee on the basis of a NZF vote, but they voted against after the Select Committee report. The policy became National Party policy in 2008. I had researched all the trial periods across the OECD, which ranged from 90 days to 2 years. I chose 90 days because I thought it would have the best chance of serving a change of government. So far it sort of has, though it is now limited to firms with less than 20 employees.

        EVs are going to take over because they will be cheaper, more durable and less costly to maintain than ICE vehicles in a few years. Learning curves guarantee this ~20% reduction in cost for every doubling in production mean about 40% production cost reduction in EV’s is still to come as their production becomes dominant, while ICE cars will get more expensive as their volumes drop.
        
        EV drivetrains are already cheaper in lower volume ‘executive’ market segments – a Tesla model S costs no more than an equivalent BMW or Audi, and that has permeated down to ‘D’ segment Tesla Model Y costing about as much to produce as an Audi A4 (Tesla have 33% profit margins on their cars, most other car companies 5-10%). No subsidies or punitive ICE taxes are required to see transition happen, and NZ doing so is a complete waste of time given we are such a miniscule market that mostly relies on Japanese 2nd hand imports rather than wastefully expensive new cars.
        
        In short get rid of the market-distorting regulation. It’s pointless expensive virtue signalling nonsense that will not speed the switch over to EVS (that will be driven by market economics and Japanese second hand market anyway) and not in the best interests of NZ or the environment.

        All on Red; I am not arguing that ICE cars are going to disappear – there area lot of use cases that make sense for them, including remote locations, off-road, recreational, But hydrogen is a shitty fuel for cars. Easily transported and stored synthetic hydrocarbon fuels will (long term) rule that market. Desert PV (now $0.02-0.03/kWh) is cheap enough to (at large scale with predicted electrolyser cost improvements) produce hydrogen and from there synthetic hydrocarbon fuels at much less than $100/barrel – cheaper than current oil prices.

        Frankly, you statement does not make sense. Given that the policy has increased the uptake of Hybrids and BEVs, therefore resulting, over time, in a reduction in the percentage of the overall vehicle fleet that are ICE vehicles, then surely that reduces CO2 emissions.
        
        I appreciate that the ETS applies to petrol, but the current level of the carbon price on a litre of petrol is not sufficient, of itself, to change behaviour. And that is what is required to actually reduce emissions. As opposed to, for instance, buying offshore credits to preserve forests in the tropics, thinking that will automatically reduce emissions. Actual behaviour has to change in order to reduce emissions. Hence the additional incentive of the vehicle levy to encourage change.
        
        On your argument there is no point in the airline industry doing any anything to make less emitting engines, since all they have to do is buy credits.

      “We are moving IT to Auckland” was the pronouncement. A slew of redundancies followed. Then 90% of those remaining said “not moving we’ll take the redundancy too”. Then they delayed it “for operational continuity”. Then covid happened. Now it’s been abandoned.
      
      A complete fuck up. Morale is in the toilet. The managers who oversaw the process left because no one respected them anymore.

    In the meantime, it would appear that the young people are severely discriminated against. There’s an evident breach of the Bill of Rights as shown in the unjustified age discrimination, which is preventing 16-17 years old rangitahi from voting in the Aotearoa elections. At least according to Make It 16 co-director Sanat Singh.
    
    I’d like to suggest that the 14-15 years old group is similarly discriminated against, as they are also not currently allowed to vote. In fact, there should not be any limits at all. Voting age limits are the residue of the colonial and racist past and it’s a high time to dispense with such relics and to allow our rangitahi to have their say in the matters concerning the future of Aotearoa.

Doctors are warning the Government there is a risk of a catastrophic collapse of the healthcare workforce.
The Women in Medicine Charitable Trust surveyed more than 900 doctors, half in primary care and half in secondary care, and says the response reveals profound distress over widespread understaffing and under-resourcing.
Of the doctors surveyed, 99 percent agreed there was currently a health workforce crisis in New Zealand.
Many doctors felt their concerns had been disregarded for years and the pandemic had exposed longstanding workforce problems, the trust said.

I do know where some of the $1.9 billion “spent” on mental health should have gone!

But, apart from adding more stress and uncertainty to the healthcare workforce, doctors and nurses, A Little ( get it?) restructuring does seem to have Little (again) impact – so far it is talking and arranging the deck chairs – typical of this fucking Government and the only hope the medical workers have.

The new Māori Health Authority has a budget of half a billion dollars and CEO Riana Manuel has allocated $100 million of that to support centuries-old treatments.
“Connecting people back to those spaces and places that have been long forgotten is certainly something that will be investing in,” Manuel said.
Just like they do with Matariki, Māori use maramataka as a way of reading the cosmos to prepare for what’s coming. <

  I am all for it. If there are double blind clinical trials that show that the ‘centuries-old’ treatments are more effective than the conventional treatments.
  
  Easy. Get 500 Maori suffering from mental health problems. Split them into two groups at random. Treat Group A with treatments from 1400. Treat Group B with anti psychotics, anti depressants, and proven therapy and counselling. Six months later compare outcomes of the two groups.

      For example does temporary, seasonal immigration of fruit pickers stimulate or delay productivity growth that comes, or would come, from mechanisation of robotic harvesting?
      
      Friedman, the monetarist, had it right on inflation, in my humble view. That is:
      
      “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon in the sense that it is and can be produced only by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output.”

Just to lighten your day.
A Pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won.
The Pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again and it won again.
The local paper read: PASTOR’S ASS OUT FRONT.
The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the Pastor not to enter the donkey in another race.
The next day the local paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR’S ASS.
This was too much for the Bishop so he ordered the Pastor to get
rid of the donkey.
The Pastor decided to give it to a Nun in a nearby convent.
The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN.
The Bishop fainted.
He informed the Nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey so she sold it to a farm for $10.
The next day the paper read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10
This was too much for the Bishop so he ordered the Nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild.
The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE.
The Bishop was buried the next day.
The moral of the story is . . . being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery and even shorten your life.
So be yourself and enjoy life.
Stop worrying about everyone else’s ass and just cover your own !!!
You’ll be a lot happier and live longer!

If you die of Covid the media don’t name you because of privacy. But if you die in a car in Remuera, you are publicly named. The police were reluctant to give the name,but the media persisted and named the lady, her living situation, how clean she kept her car, and her personal details of being homeless are made front page news.

Arguably when you die of Covid it should be in the public interest who you are and how you died because that data is being used to coerce you into various behaviours lockdowns, taking an experimental vaccine etc. So we deserve to know the details of those deaths and we don’t get them , they are just covid deaths.

But a woman who dies quietly in her car, and her homelessness, becomes front page news. Why?

TV3 had some very concerning graphics on the news tonight outlining the significant growth in delayed cancer surgeries and elective surgery since 2020. What is also very concerning is how bad is the Health system going to have to get before Dr Angry Doolittle or our PM actually stop lying and admit there is a crisis in the Health system ?.
