  It is fitting that this is scoring 2 up ticks and 2 down ticks at the time I read that.
  
  Mandela was an interesting and complex character. Yes, certainly, there is a lot of good stuff he is known for.
  But there’s also a seedy underbelly that gets far less exposure:
  * the terrorist – a man who lead the ANC that killed tens of thousands of black people to achieve its political goals.
  * the man who prolonged apartheid – who could have made a deal ending apartheid at least 2 years earlier but chose conflict instead for political reasons.

    Prolonged apartheid to keep control, just like someone prolonging Covid red light shit to keep control.
    South Africa was sad really. My Grandfather left before WW1. He was a farmer in Capetown, Dairy, wool, lamb, beef, and agriculture. Must have been huge and he employed many. He was single.
    In the end he had enough of the Blacks stealing whatever they wanted. He had to sack employees, give away all his animals to neighbours, and walked off the land. Jumped on a ship and came to NZ.
    The shit was going strong way back then.

      No it wasn’t burning the village to eliminate some contamination. It was burning down the village to eliminate the black competition.
      
      I regard government institutions as legitimate ANC targets. I even consider attacking white schools legitimate ANC targets. That all makes sense in a “freedom struggle” for blacks vs a white minority government
      
      But the vast majority of the people that were killed by the ANC (well over 95%) were black people who would be opposition once the inevitable happened and apartheid ended.
      
      These people were not killed by the apartheid regime. Nor were they killed in the freedom struggle. They were killed in the political turf war mainly by the ANC trying to grab political control.

        It’s tribal and continues to this day. The Soviet Union were just using the ANC to destabilize the region.

Politically inspired deaths after the release of Mandela and the unbanning of the ANC until the ’94 elections -12000 (if I remember correctly – from the Truth and Reconciliation investigation).
        
        Matt – the only major opposition were the Zulu nationalists of Buthelezi lead Inkatha Freedom Party. The ANC went about killing their traditional leaders, very much as Mugabe killed thousands of Ndebele in the Gukurahundi.

        mawm: What is really interesting is the Operation Vula period of the late 1980s./early 1990s (Vula means “to open up” in Xhosa).
        By the time Vula kicked off, apartheid was well on the road to being deconstructed. So why the need to bring tons of arms into South Africa?
        
        It certainly was not needed for the struggle against apartheid. Nope: it was for one thing only – giving ANC more firepower against other black groups during the transition.
        
        It also explains why Mandela et al were keen to keep apartheid going longer. They needed the time to build up their forces. The longer they could keep aratheid going, and keep the situation unstable, the more strength they could build up.
        
        One man one vote or democratic precesses etc were of no interest to them. It was all an excuse for a massive power grab.
        
        The numbers of deaths were huge – and that was with tens of thousands of white citizens being pulled in to patrol the townships to help keep them safe.

I’m continually amazed how a “shit” army that has substandard equipment and demoralised soldiers, that runs out of fuel, and has such massive losses is winning battle after battle and keeps on gaining territory. Magic!

      And yet, they hold approx. 20% of the Ukrainian territory. Now try to imagine what would happen if their equipment (what’s left) was working better and their troops wanted to fight?
      
      As an aside, the resources committed to the invasion of Ukraine are just a fraction of what Russia is really capable of. Dismissing its potential is just a wishful thinking and a total lack of understanding of what makes that country tick.

There have been some significant changes in NZ Rugby over the weekend. Matthew Tukaki has been added to the All Black coaching panel. When questioned about the apparent lack of coaching credentials on Tukaki’s CV, a spokesperson for NZ Rugby said they had consulted Kelvin Davis who said the work Tutaki had done “speaks for itself”

“I’d heard about the stuff he’d done apparently overseas,” Davis said. He’s being condemned for being highly successful and some people don’t like that. Some people don’t like the uppity Māori but I can’t fault his work,” Mr Davis says.

And in other news, a spokesman for NZ Rugby has confirmed that William Gannin Ormsby was considered for a role on the All Blacks coaching team, having been secretly referred by his wife, Hon. Nanaia Mahuta. However NZR was concerned that the 72 other government appointments organised for Mr Ormsby and his family might constitute a conflict of interest. He will however be utilised in a “show us the money” role aligned with the Silverlake deal.

        Interestingly in her first sentence she referred to meeting her obligations to her family. Meaning her obligations to find them income earning roles if she is in a position to do so. Like in many other cultures this is considered normal and culturally appropriate within Maori ranks. Do we have the right to judge based on our values?

      Whislt you are right in part – after the game over a few beers with an acquantaince who is on the LEC and local Union Leader it could appear that there could be trouble at HO in Wellington.
      President has resigned quietly recently.
      One reason he thought was the arrangements for the Labour Elected and List MPs at the next election, remembering that HO has all the cards.
      It may be perceived that Ardern will go sooner rather than later, and it suggetsed that Wood (M) will take over – the Union’s choice and that Mahuta will become Deputy.
      The consideration appears that Labour will select more Maori to the existing Maori Caucus and the Maori seats will remain Labour.
      Thus giving Mahuta total numbers and control of the Caucus.
      Rumbles from the Labour Shires who are not being considered.

    I don’t know if any of you have read CP Snow’s works, but I devoured them in period, both for the excellent stye of English, and the content, quaint as it may now seem in today’s world.
    
    He is still relevant today ( even though that era and its Brit social zeitgeist is gone), because, at the risk of being trite, political power and all of its concomitant Machiavellian intrigue never goes out of date.

Only a substantial increase in competition will work. A “Groceries Commissioner” ain’t doing that. Jacinda should get on a Zoom call, with the head of the Treasury and the Commerce Commission, to a handful of CEOs of USA and European grocery chains. Ask them “What would it take for you to set up in New Zealand?” At least they would learn something. More than we will ever get from the Groceries Commissioner. 🤡

  For those of us old enough to remember the current economic and commercial abilities of this government are right up there with the Kirk/Rowling govt. And indeed, it was was Warren Freer as Minister of Trade & Industry who tried to regulate the inflationary pressures being felt by consumers at the time. How many remember the Maximum Retail Price scheme and the little MRP shields that had to be printed on packaging containing the manufacturers maximum retail price. A scheme that fail spectacularly and resigned to the rubbish bin of failed failed socialist interventions.
  
  There is much wrong with the retail duopoly that reigns supreme in NZ, but half baked ideas as interventions will solve nothing, except make things even more expensive!

    Being a generally law abiding citizen, quite a while ago I applied for an exemption. Sure enough it arrived in the mail a few days later. The following week, another one arrived in the mail. And another the following week.
    
    I think they needed to use up the funding. Or more likely incompetence and the system not properly tested.
    
    The only place I’ve ever been questioned is Wellington libraries – they appear to have full time security so it gives them something to do.

    Why would they adopt STV? Labour own the council and councilers and my experience with Auckland Council is they are Wellington public servants at heart, so Labour supporters.
    The objective is to win and maintain power, which they have been successful doing since the Super City merger. Winning by a majority doesn’t matter.
    If the situation was reversed, with the left splitting the vote, they would be in favor of it, as it increases the chances of one of their splitters getting in.
    I support STV, and think we were sold a pup with MMP, with half the MPs unelected by the public. They are selected by the Party machine, hence Angry Andy is unelectable even in a formerly safe labour seat, but still has a job for life. If I was a cynic, I would say that was a feature, not a bug for the MPs and probably why it was promoted in the referendum.

      GJM: I couldn’t reasonably disagree with anything you have written. What would be the trigger that would cause council to adopt STV? Currently, a “shocking” mayoral outcome is all I can think of.
      
      There is no doubt in my mind that the Fourth Labour Government expected the Royal Commission to recommend the party-oriented MMP system, rather than the “candidate-centred but party wrapped” STV system.
      
      I also have no doubt that if STV had been recommended in December 1986, not even National / Doug Graham would have acquiesced in the face of public outrage over the behaviour of politicians, to allow the indicative referendum in September 1992 to take place.
      
      I appeared before the Auckland Council select committee in December 2009 (chaired by John Carter). I explained how STV could work to provide the people of Auckland with fair, equal and proportional representation. I was given a polite hearing, but, of course, my submission was ignored.
      
      The National / ACT government clearly thought that by putting in place one- and two-seat wards, under FPP, that the Right would dominate Auckland politics for many years to come. As we now know, it has backfired spectacularly.
      
      I see there are four Labour and two City Vision councillors, plus Richard Hills, and a “lefty” mayor who comes from the Right of the Labour Party — so, eight out of 21 in what you imply is a mainly centre-left council. But that formation is not electorally embedded.
      
      There is plenty of scope for things to change, and quickly. For that to happen, the centre-right must take this current opportunity to put up serious, quality, electable candidates, preferably having at least business experience. (I mean, seriously, Leo Molloy?)
      
      Only then can the centre-right hope to secure a 12-9 or 11-10 majority, and make change. Whether or not a majority centre-right council would be any more inclined to adopt STV than the last two councils have been, is quite another matter. As you say, why would they? On the other hand, 15 councils will be elected by STV in October, so local politicians are capable of doing the right thing.

  I was at the pools yesterday. At the end of the session the changing room was crowded. You could hardly move. It was a perfect environment for catching a virus. I hung back outside because there was just no room. Not one person wearing a mask.
  
  Then they all come out and put on their masks. Because they need to exit the pools via reception where there is a “please wear a mask sign” 🤡
  
  This natural experiment reveals that people are only wearing masks as theatre. I have literally seen not one person in the crowded changing room wearing a mask. My partner says it is the same with the women’s room.

  His job should be to give the best available independent health advice to the public.

Maggy Wassilieff posted last night that Daniel Faitaua had reported on TVNZ One News that “expected temperatures in UK tomorrow will melt railway lines.”

Yes, you read that right. TVNZ News is claiming that 40 degree heat may very well *MELT* steel railway lines.

And they’re not the only ones propagating this misinformation/alarmism. The Express in the UK carried the headline that “Train companies already CANCEL services as warning of HEAT melting tracks”. At least with the Express, when you read the story you find that what they really mean is that the rails might bend or buckle in the heat.

This from the mainstream media, who loudly cry “DON’T TRUST SOCIAL MEDIA!!! It’s full of misinformation. Trust us! We fact check everything, we never deceive or use misleading headlines, we uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity.”

Sigh.

And then they sob into their soy lattes, “But WHY don’t the people trust us?”

    Maggy, this is something the UK rail network is subject to nearly every summer. As identified above it is all to do with the thermal welding of track joints.
    
    The railway track in the UK has two problems:
    1. Air temperature range extremes, which are from sub zero degrees Celsius in winter to plus 32 degrees Celsius in summer. The number of extreme days at ever end of the range are rare, but they do happen none the less; and
    2. The volume of train traffic on the lines – multiple trains per hour is common on much of the UK network, so wear & tear is that much greater and the heat of passing trains does not allow sufficient time for the track (and joints to cool).
    
    Because maintenance isn’t what it should be & because of the above realities, it is not unusual for trains to travel at reduced speeds over stretches of the UK rail network to minimise the risk of buckling the track & consequential derailment.
    
    Such explanations would never be a good headline, so talk of track melting makes better headlines and the journalists don’t need to look further into the story.

Have looked at Sri Lanka and perhaps someone could comment.

The problem was the switch from chemical fertilizer to organic. There was a resulting drop in production / revenue and Covid 19 measures pushed Sri Lanka over the edge.

The problem was the organic fertilizers work but the soil needs around 10 years to adapt but of course in the meantime their are yield issues.

Questions if anyone knows. Do the organic fertilizers work? (not in the short term of course) And does the soil need a lot of time to adapt?

  I don’t know about large scale ag. But certainly at a smaller scale organic farming is all about building up the soil, building humus and the soil food web by adding “greens and browns” year on year. Its about encouraging beneficial insects who deal with the pest insects. Its a massively complex system. I would think it would take 5+ years to build reasonable soil and be well on your way – but probably 10 years to get it all humming.
  However, if they are talking about using organic fert, we just mean artificial fert that doesn’t use petrochemicals, right? I don’t believe such products exist in any useful form. Even “industrial organic” (think the thousands of acres of hydroponic lettuces grown in California to supply the US) doesn’t work like this. For hydroponics they provide liquid nutrients (I believe mostly ocean sources such as seaweed emulsion) and avoid sprays by, for instance, growing inside in a climate controlled environment, but its not really organic in the spirit of things and I don’t think it works in soil.

  The problem is the transition to organic takes a lot of time and effort and careful attention to inputs and may still not be successful. What Sri Lanka did was zero input farming, government led.

Did anyone else notice the sheer number of death notices in the NZ Herald on Saturday? It must be something of a record. On closer examination, I noticed that many of these were in the old old, 80+ age category. It certainly looks like Covid is cutting a swath through our elderly, just as it has done overseas.

But then I thought how could this be because this blogs resident biological and medical whackjobs – oops I mean geniuses – who do all their own research – have quite clearly told us that Covid doesn’t kill anybody, is a few sniffles, and if anyone does die from Covid they didn’t die from it but with it. And that we don’t have excess deaths anyway.

Well, what a bunch of dumbasses they have all turned out to be. Everything they have predicted about Covid has turned out to be wrong. They wouldn’t, to use that glorious expression, know shit from clay.

  All cause mortality is rising everywhere in the world and it isn’t covid causing it. In fact, the higher the vax rate, the higher the rate of all cause mortality.
  It’s certainly starting to look like there is a rise in vax related deaths and of course, deaths due to inane covid policies.
  Lack of early diagnosis of serious illness, lack of access to treatment and surgery, depression, increased family violence etc. All these outcomes were warned about, but Ardern, Trudeau and others carried on regardless.

  Are they taking D3, Zinc, C etc. as advised? No, you mean that advice has still not being given? My parents are nearly 90, both have considerable lists of life threatening conditions, they have been following the best advice available on Covid and got through without being remarkably sick.
  The UK data on Covid deaths earlier in the year showed the average age of deaths attributed to Covid was higher than that for all deaths.

  That’s a direct result of the summer lock downs. Not only did the geniuses root the economy but they managed to delay the omicron spike till the depths of winter where it was always going to do the most damage. The forecast for cases in the next fortnight is massive as people are inside and have low vitamin d levels. We should have been doing this in February. Those lock downs will kill a lot of people.

  From the Ministry of Heath’s “reported cases”
  Deaths = 1,785
  Cases = 1,508,728 Note this doesn’t include the many thousands who have not reported their Covid Positive status.
  So just based on the official numbers Mortality is at 0.118%, or 1.2/1000.
  Then the minister has clearly stated that these numbers include “all deaths within 28 days of a positive test”.
  Since the average recovery time is 7 days (actually probably less) why is a death 21 days after recovery still counted as “dying from”?
  So quite to the contrary, it is we who are correct, and you who are wrong.

The karaka poison problem

How toxic are untreated karaka kernels?

Last week Matt Long commented that he didn’t think Karaka fruits were that toxic.

The fact is we do not know how much of a raw kernel needs to be ingested by an adult before toxic effects are noticed.

We now know that the toxic compounds in karaka kernels are converted into nitropropionic acid (NPA) when digested.

NPA is toxic to mammals and there is no antidote for it. – hence there have never been any trials to determine its toxicity level in humans.

I can only find one report recording the death of a child from eating karaka berries – from 1891.
However most folks in NZ have been warned that the berries of karaka are poisonous…and refrain from ingesting them.

NPA is produced naturally by some mould fungi and has been implicated in the poisoning of people eating mouldy sugar cane.

The most recent case of NPA poisoning is of a Norwegian boy…and the cause was undetermined (perhaps contaminated flour from Turkey).

    Seems they extrapolate from animal studies and add in a safety margin ….but that may not be always a good indicator.
    
    Hence for NPA:
    The oral lethal dose for mice is 68 mcg/g but the toxic dose for humans is not known, and rodents are likely to be more resistant to toxicity, in agreement with the lack of symptoms in the mouse experiment.

Yesterday I put a post up from 2020 with evidence how we were warned about the disastrous outcomes of inane covid policies and that those who dared point this out were either vilified, smeared, censored, deplatformed or a combination of some or all of these.

Rodney Hide asked me to post further reminders of the hypocrisy, lies and narrative control employed by Ardern and her bevy of experts since the start of the covid circus.

Here’s a good video challenging Baker’s mask fetish. It includes evidence of Ardern, Baker, Bloomfield and a host of others doing a complete U turn on their mask advice. No, not because the “science” changed. In fact, the bulk of evidence that has emerged thanks to now available empirical evidence, clearly show masks are next to useless at stopping infection or transmission of aerosol based viruses.

    I would guess that nurses have pretty good immune systems. There was some suggestion early on in this ‘pandemic’ that recent exposure to other coronaviruses, for instance, may be protective. I’m guessing that nurses are exposed to everything with regularity.
    
    But saying that nurses are not catching covid from patients? where do you get that idea? Those dealing with known covid patients wear face shields as well as masks remember, and they wear properly fitted medical grade masks, which will provide some very limited protection.

  Well electricity daily charges (lines companies) have gone up recently from 30c/day to 60c/day for low users. Courtesy of Megan Woods who decided it wasn’t fair that low users should pay a low daily rate because the poor people have big families and are thus high users….
  
  Cancellation of oil and gas exploration will have had some impact on power prices too as it will affect the way they price their current gas generation in the market. I’m sure its also had an impact on bottled and reticulated natural gas.
  
  Fuel has gone up massively.
  
  Water costs are going up up up with 3 waters.
  
  Rates just go up up up – they include wages of course, and construction costs.
  
  And i know that house prices are meant to fall, but I’m not sure how they can fall below the cost of an equivalent new build which is getting more expensive every day….
  
  So yeah, most of the cost increases can be directly pinned back to the gov.

Two things strike me about Robertson’s panicked move to keep the excise and RUC cuts in place.

1) In the face of apparently genuine evidence in Europe of the climate emergency it seems a bit hypocritical of this government to respond to a short term political problem by subsidising fossil fuels.

2) Robertson has carefully explained that the extension is not additional spending because it comes from unspent covid emergency funds. Leaving aside that it is all borrowed money, would it not have been prudent to keep an eye on how big the current spike in cases gets. Are they saying there will be no restrictions imposed that will affect businesses regardless of what happens in hospitals. That abundance of caution seems to be out the window.

  There are going to be (as always) vastly more people dying of winter cold this year than warmth. In UK every year about 1 in 2000 people dies due to winter cold. This year will be far worse due to enormous cost spikes in fuels (will hit poor worst) and failure of grids due to over-reliance on renewables and foolish shutting of fossil fuel plants.

A couple of days ago a commentator here described their slow painful journey from Wellington to Auckland in an EV. I saw at least one, undetailed response from an obvious EVphile about how he didn’t have any problems.

Well, based on the following articlefrom an American EVphile it sounds like the first commentator is the one to be trusted – and he wrote this after, as he admits, rolling his eyes about an “EV sucks journey” he read in the WSJ:

As a smug EV evangelist and self-proclaimed EV expert, I rolled my eyes. “They just didn’t plan well enough,” I thought to myself, not realizing I was merely hoisting myself on my own petard. A few weeks later, it was time to drive from DC to Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes region of New York, this time in a BMW iX. And despite plenty of planning, I still spent almost as much time stationary, arguing with charging machinery, as I did actually pulling electrons into the car’s battery pack throughout the 600-mile journey.

At each charging stop, in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York, I ran into problems. A five-minute wait to see if the car and charger would establish communications was invariably the case. Waiting 10 minutes was not uncommon. Even then, there was no time to relax; more than once, an error somewhere in the loop shut everything down after just a few kWh.

Exactly what the KB commentator described about his experience. I did appreciate this part also:
Frustration often got the better of me and I berated the white monoliths, channeling the spirit of Basil Fawlty to summon down all manner of ills upon them and their circuitry, to my shame. (But seriously, it’s all just so opaque. Why don’t they just bloody work?)

Sweet Jesus. I just heard James Shaw tell us he focusses on ‘fixing climate change’.
He will not ‘fix climate change’.
He could cover the country in trees and get rid of all animal life in the country and this would have _no_ effect on ‘climate change’.
He could spend every single tax dollar for the next hundred years trying to ‘fix climate change’, and would achieve nothing.
All he’s going to wind up doing is making all of our lives worse.
BTW, James,
– CO2 is not pollution.
– CO2 isn’t the climate control knob.
