The headline says The Latest Evidence Masks Don’t Work as Infections and Deaths in Mask-Mandated New Zealand Rocket Above Mask-Free Australia, but to me those charts convey a more important story: How utterly reprehensible has been Ardern’s willful destruction of our economy, and her poising New Zealand’s social fabric in pursuit of ‘looking strong’ on the world stage. She has conjured and burnt billions of dollars for no gain other than the stroking of her own ego. The consequences of this and other hubristic decisions will remain a source of pain for New Zealanders for generations to come.

    As predicted by immunologists who could think, vaccinating into a raging pandemic with a treatment with no history as a sterlising vaccine (i.e. prevents catching and transmitting the virus) has lead to a proliferation of variants and an immune system in those vacced that is poorly prepared for variants.
    
    Keep tub thumping for Jacinda and other world leaders too stupid to apply their own extant pandemic response plans and instead got sucked in by the hysteria and Big Pharmas promises.   As I have posted before over the past 30 years over One Billion Dollars has been handed over to the Maori Elites in the form of Treaty Settlements. I have seen no evidence that any of those funds have been used to improve the lot of Maori other than the Elites.
  Indeed over that time the stats show that Maori have declined in every negative area.
  I say the Maori Elites have enrichened themselves just the same as the Chiefs of the Tribes did so in pre European times. I say Maori culture ( how we do things around here) has not changed one iota.
  Indeed as regards class discrimination Maori are worse than the worst British in this area.
  Co-governance is nothing more than handing the Maori Elites even more assets so they can exploit their own people as well as Non-Maori.

      I feel you are right mike. I would love to know how National/Act plan to unpick the debacles that are 3Waters, Maori Health Authority, Co-Governance and Maori Wards etc, and restore things back to how they were pre-Winston’s anointment of Cindy.
      I fear that if any attempt is made to reclaim ratepayer’s Water Resources and associated assets, Maori will destroy any functioning assets that are in working condition.
      I also fear that any taxpayer’s money paid to councils in recompense for confiscated water assets will be long spent and unrecoverable.
      Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe we shouldn’t do it but it’s going to be effin difficult.

You can’t tell me it’s colonisation making them overweight when I counted at least 14 packs of chippies, peanuts, chocolate treats plus a whopper bag of 2 minute noodles. And not much else.     If the treaty was a ceding of sovereignty (as it appears to be), and the brown elite say that it was a partnership (as it appears it wasn’t), aren’t they NOT honouring their treaty commitments? And didn’t the non-brown part of NZ take the commitment extremely seriously?
    What is the penalty for not honouring an agreement?
    Can we scrap the whole thing? It would save a ton of cash. Who would really be upset?

  Totally agree krazy. As other commentators have said, the other terrible thing about masks is the psychological effect. We can’t see each other. Normal social intercourse has been suspended indefinitely. Except when we sit down at a café and then we are safe and can take off our masks because it is a tricky virus.
  
  The mask says I am compliant, I am afraid, I am a prisoner of Jacinda’s nightmare. I certainly agree with you that they don’t work. If they did work why would we have had millions of cases of covid and now approaching 2000 “deaths with covid”.
  
  But that they don’t work is really a feature, not a bug. Intelligent law-abiding citizens are forced to wear masks that everyone knows don’t do much at all. That’s a feature of socialist regimes. They make you do things that you know are not true and are not right. They seek to humiliate you. That lowers your self-esteem and makes you more compliant.
  
  What this is all about is compliance. Jacinda is in charge and she will tell you what to wear on your face. Power is not the means to an end, power is an end in itself. And Jacinda loves power.
  
  Come the next election we need to vote this government out and and regain our freedoms. Otherwise the decline into the People’s Socialist Republic of New Zimbabwe will continue.

      I’ve seen no evidence that if National had been in government between now and March 2020, instead of Labour, that anything at all Covid-related would have been different. The reason for this is that none of it is Labour policy per se, but comes from the WEF and the Gates-funded WHO. Ardern is just following an outline, and Luxon would have to do the same. Covid policies have to be rejected by the public at large from the ground-up, not by holding out hope that a top-down change will come. Remove consent and it all becomes unenforceable for practical reasons. Expecting the government to save you from the government (albeit different individuals) is ridiculous on its face.

Whereas I do think the opposition and the leader of the opposition do not have the same spirit.   Today in Greytown south Wairarapa we are experiencing a relatively harsh southerly storm with very strong winds and cold driving rain. Imagine my dismay when driving the high street I witnessed numerous people combating said driving rain and freezing temperatures in paper masks, sodden through, their heads turned sideways as they battled their way up a, by Greytown standards, deserted Main Street. You have to laugh.

The 2020/21 Annual Report from Crown Law laments its lack of ethnic diversity (p29); castigates itself for its gender pay gap – 15.5% since you ask (pp 29-31); but what passes without comment is that:

* 71% of staff are female
* 66% of lawyers are female
* 64% of managers are female
* 83% of senior managers (Solicitor General & her deputies) are female

The lack of gender balance is concerning, but the apparent absence of concern at this failure shown by one of our public law agencies is appalling.

  1. it’s obvious that women are to blame for the gender pay gap, the men in their employ are obvious better negotiators then they are, as they have secured better remuneration for themselves.
  
  Given the nature of the organisation, the pay gap is justified as the men are doing a demonstrably better job (at least in so far as wage negotiations go), despite there being a distinct lack of patriarchy in Crown Law.

  2. No one has actually demonstrated the benefit of diversity per se. There are some decent arguments that diversity could lead to conflict and miscommunication within an organization.
  
  Diversity can be a natural consequence of a quest for excellence. If you choose to hire the best, it seems foolish restrict your labour pool for arbitrary reasons, and excellence would likely overcome the natural consequences of diversity per se for a nett win.

The whistle has blown on the Chch stadium, 13-3. Locals now have to back it. But this eye-wateringly expensive “icon of the city” was argued on the basis they need to attract international events when e-Sports and online gaming are actually today’s main leisures, not Baby Boomer traditions of packed stadiums and rugby tours. That stadium will never be “packed”. Just with money. Locals money.

Bob Dylan has played there thrice without the stadium. Now Elton John will visit for the last time, without the stadium. They come anyway. Christchurch is already a world destination as their container mall proved post-earthquake.

Ah well, they all better get saving for their stadium tax levy on top of already increased rates, cost of living, 7.8% inflation, and a coming Recession.

Those rugby games better be pretty damn good! But most will be watching on TV because They can’t afford tickets, because the stadium they’re playing in will have cleaned out ratepayers’ cupboards. Bit of an own goal there, ref!

    Because the Dunedin stadium was forced through against very significant public opposition as well. A select few did very well out of that transaction, leaving it to the ratepayer to bear the ongoing cost. I’d imagine that is the model in Christchurch as well.

        The Marsden refinery would be paying premium prices for the feedstock and it would still be more expensive to refine at Marsden than in overseas refineries. Trading oil derivatives would be far cheaper and just as effective as operating Marsden.

    The idea of selling citizenship to foreigners is popular in NZ, but a counter view is that the comparatively low threshold means for every active entrepreneur family you will get 20 families of lifestylers.
    
    These are hard-working folk who have made their money in another country and are looking for a lifestyle country to relax in for the remainder of their lives.
    
    There are notable exceptions, and they get publicity, but does the scheme over all operate on the national equivalent of a lifestyle village business?
    
    Regardless, it has flaws. There was a well publicised murder charge in Christchurch in which the wife of an investment-residency couple was charged with killing her husband.
    
    In the evidence it emerged that the man had borrowed money in China to meet the NZ threshold of the investor-entry scheme, and repaid it a year or two after arriving in NZ. The pair had bugger all cash.

It seems clear that the majority of residents want the stadium, in full knowledge of the costs.

There is also another context. That is the council spending eye watering amounts on cycleways which on many streets are not needed and make people angry. Another example is 150 million and rising on the cathedral rebuild, which a clear majority opposed.

Also there is not much evidence for your assertion that people are going off stadiums.

        Cricket had much bigger crowds back in the days it was on free to air tv.
        However
        The NZR makes more money by flogging off tv rights to the games.
        In that respect the crowd are extras.
        I went to watch Auckland v Wellington in the NPC before the pandemic. There were no (0) spectators on the south side. You’d never know watching TV because everyone was herded onto the north side where the cameras were pointing.

  You might read up on the history of Christchurch, Benedict, and inform yourself of the manner in which it was planned with the Cathedral at its epicenter. It may have escaped your notice that its iconic and symbolic status is acknowledged on the city’s logo and that the building has always been a tourist drawcard as it will continue to be once overseas visitors begin returning to The Garden City. History and tradition matter to me. I am saddened that the harmony and symmetry of the grid pattern of our central city has been destroyed by building the ugly convention carbunkle across Gloucester St and even more annoyed that the stadium is to be built across three central city blocks and similarly wrecking important arterial roads into the city. We’ve already suffered enough damage to the city without wilfully inflicting more.

That’s why my advice to independent traveller’s building an itinerary was West Coast, Haast Pass, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Milford or Doubtful, etc. I knew one guy who recommended spending the first day in Christchurch looking at the old buildings.       Well there’s not much to see in Christchurch when you come down from Mount Hutt The Cathedral was an interesting place to wander around, filled as it was with regimental colours, oak carvings, the tomb of a bishop, a grand organ, Maori weaving, Latin inscriptions and if you had a mind to attend a service a magnificent choir in the Anglican tradition. There are more things to see since the rebuild and if I may give a plug the Ravenscar House Museum is certainly worth a visit and it is interesting to see the neogothic Arts Centre being rebuild at the cost of many millions. If you are a rich tourist try the Astronomy Hotel.

    That’s your opinion. Mine is that if the church wants a cathedral let them fund it. Tourists aren’t interested and neither are most locals (except the rich elites). Let’s get rid of the CBD too. The EQ did part of the job, we should have finished it. Wouldn’t need all those cycle lanes on busy roads into town either.
    Essentially I’m just sick of the long and growing list of things that I as a rate payer are expected to contribute to but never use. Let the users pay: libraries, swimming pools, tourist attractions, stadium. Convention centre, art gallery, museum rebuild, sculptures everywhere, etc etc etc. Ratepayers should pay for water infrastructure, roads, the basics.

    Motorists should appreciate cycleways. Drive faster and more safely. The cycleways can be somewhat crowded in the weekends. The sooner the CC finishes the coastal cycleway from Sumner the better in my opinion. Then they could turn their attention to Dyers Pass Road. The cycleway from the city to Halswell is a boon to the motorist and the bikers seem to appreciate it too. There’s no better sight than cyclists going through Hagley Park to the various institutions of learning by cycleway.

  Oh I am sure most cantabrians want the stadium but I take issue with ‘in full knowledge of the costs’. Nobody who submitted on the stadium knew what the increase to rate payers would be. Even now I would guess the majority of rate payers have no idea how much higher there rates will be. The rental class has no understanding of the relationship between rates and rental fees.
  
  The question was ‘do you want a stadium for ~$680m’ to which 70% said yes. If the question had been ‘do you want a stadium, your rates and rent will rise by $180 a year, and we will fix less roads.’ do you think the result would have been the same?

  Stadiums are a bit of an emotional extortion racket, although we haven’t quite reached the US standard of multi-billionaire sports franchise owners forcing taxpayers to build new stadiums under threat of relocation. We get a bit of that, with Hamilton outbiddkng Wellington for the sevens, Christchurch pinching the Boxing Day cricket and Hamilton’s V8 debacle.
  But that’s what the people’s representatives went for – a cathedral the church didn’t want and a stadium that will seldom be used to its overbuilt capacity.

  The big question is whether the residents would be prepared to pay for it.
  
  Many people have a perverse idea about money and see that if they don’t go ahead then they will “lose” the “free” $220M or more from the government.
  
  As is well recognised, this stadium will need ongoing subsidies. That is because the punters are not prepared to pay the actual cost of building and operating it.
  
  The build cost has already blown out to almost $700M. It will likely be a billion by the time it is built.

The next National Government will repeal Labour’s Three Waters entity model and return any seized water assets back to councils, Leader of the Opposition Judith Collins says.

  In a word, yes. National has promised to repeal and replace Three Waters, if elected next year. A replacement model is being worked on to incorporate a partnership between local and central government, but allowing assets to remain in local control. National also opposes a co-governance model being applied to public services.

A large group of sailors, soldiers and airmen have had a victory today against an order from the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) that sought to dismiss them from service if they didn’t receive a COVID-19 vaccine or booster. The order is the fourth attempt by the CDF to achieve this with the previous orders either being withdrawn or ruled as unlawful in court. In the interim hearing, Justice Ellis ruled against the Chief of Defence and ordered that no member of the armed forces was to be discharged based on their vaccination status until after a substantive hearing. A date is not yet set for a substantive hearing but it is likely to be late September in the Wellington High Court.

This might be a stupid question but I will ask it anyhow, why should we pay our Council Rates when nearly two thirds of the population are against Three Waters .
Surely there a ways of cutting off the money to those Councils that side with the Government most people pay council rates by direct credit, you now have to hurt this Government with everything you can muster because the won’t listen and are hell bent in dividing New Zealander’s.

        The NZ sharemarket grew faster than any other bourse 1984-87, with New Zealanders piling in with gusto. More enthusiasm than experience, sadly. It was our way of investing in the newly deregulated economy.
        
        It’s not surprising then that our sharemarket fell further than any other, nor that a generation of investors turned away from the market. In part it’s why NZ investors turned to property with the enthusiasm they previously showed for shares, the consequences of which we still live with today.

The Herald has a story about Mercury Bay school turning down the opportunity for one of its students to win a cash scholarship by designing a t-shirt for a fishing competition.
One of the objecting teachers was Thomas Everth, a well-known environmental activist who teaches part-time “while completing a PhD on the experience of climate activist teachers in New Zealand”.

How can he possibly have the objectivity to a do a PhD on his own life experience?

So, with the US supreme Court’s Dobbs decision it looks like the politicians have actually decided it’s time to do their jobs:

Democrats have moved to codify gay marriage rights (not just the rights to marriage, but inheritiance, tax treatments etc) which is something they should have done long ago. 47 Republicans (rightly) support this.

Republicans have introduced a bill requiring child support to be paid from conception (retrospectively if paternity isn’t proven earlier). Democrats are complaining about the language because “unborn child” is apparently personing language or something.

No woman can get pregnant alone.

    The bill actually explicitly defines it as an “unborn homo sapian at various stages of development”. They are serious about the Bill by the looks.
    
    My biggest worry is that it actually may incentivise some truly awful women to carry as long as possible, getting money then getting late term abortions (which you can get in some states). Not sure on what happens when it’s aborted.

        You aren’t very smart are you?
        I actually believe women have the right to choose.
        You do realise that women aren’t evil scary things right? Some are horrible and stupid people though, just like some men.
        It’s ok to call out horrible/stupid people (see above).
        I think the Bill is good because it makes the male/donor take some responsibility for his actions and helps women with the various costs of carrying a pregnancy which is what any remotely decent “father” would do any way. Holding the money in Trust would be idiotic and defeat the purpose of the Bill which is why my “biggest issue” is that it will be gamed.
        For the record, “my biggest worry” is actually quite small. I see this policy as almost all upside.
        That doesn’t change the fact that there will be people (a tiny percentage to be fair) who take advantage of it and inevitably some expectant fathers will be destroyed by this.
        
        It’s also worth noting that the majority of abortions are not for medical reasons. Late terms are almost always for medical reasons of course.
        
        There is definitely a period of time someone could receive the support payments (backdated to conception) and still get a reasonably early abortion (14th week or so). 14 weeks of free money will not be ignored by some horrible people.

Funny how something people have thought of as archaic and outdated actually makes sense when compared to the ‘modern’ alternative or sleeping with as many people as possible and aborting any unwanted children (right up until or even after birth).
    
    It’s not that long ago that woman who slept with multi men were considered ‘sluts’. Now birthing people brag online about their ‘body counts’.

      This is why I don’t have any respect for claims that the LGBT community is larger than we thought. It is very easy for someone (especially females) to pretend to be bi. They literally don’t need to change the way they live their lives at all yet get to claim a special victimhood status that’s quite high up the pyramid for free.
      
      I remember the teenage fads through the years and the various LGBT identities do seem to be used by those kids who would previously have been Emo or Goth or Punk etc to set themselves aside as “special”. That does a horrible disservice to those kids that actually are LGBT and inevitably, the fad kids will generally be the loudest too.

Perhaps another lie?
Ardern said the status quo was not an option because it could mean ratepayers being faced with bills of up to $9000 per household.

Elsewhere, facts are given that three water expenses may cost $185 billion over 30 years.
$185 billion divided by Team of Five Million = $37,000 dived by 30 years = $1233 a year per individual.
So to cost $9,000 each household would have to have 7 people.
Not that many do.

  Of course, if your rural community found itself facing those sort of bills, it might decide to look at alternative and cheaper methods. Like setting up each house to harvest its own rainwater and recycle grey water. I’ve heard natural swimming ponds can filter water to drinking quality.
  Maybe even putting in tanks and bulk buying water deliveries from the nearest big city with a treatment plant would be cheaper. I’m sure there are lots of things an innovative, thrifty community could do for itself.

    That has already happened. My friends in Beachlands in Auckland , when they built their new house around 12 years ago, they had to put in rainwater collection into a 30,000 ltr. ?? tank, and then installed an ultraviolet filter to cleanse the water as it was pumped into the house for use.

    i live on tank supply as long as the sky keeps giving. the occassional 2 times in summer when i need to buy in water – dry season – it cost max. $300 for a 14k litre tank – so at a minimal cost of $600 p/year max. for topping up from town supply by tank – being on your own self-sufficient supply is always way cheaper than town supply as they pay for not only what goes into the house but the house pays for wastage too.

I remember when

Article in yesterday’s Manawatu Standard that gives some indication of the present situation with medical staff and covid/flu levels.
The clinical director states that they have 19,000 enrolled patients.
She states that they have 366 covid patients needing active management in the community.
That 48 new cases of covid among enrolled patients are being reported every day.
However she said the pandemic was not the fundamental problem which was chronic workforce shortage and years of underfunding.
Kauri Healthcare is a big practice with 12 full-time equivalent GPs and nurse practitioners.
For the 19,000 enrolled patients the practice should really have 17 GPs, and their building is set up to serve 22,500.
They are using every tool they have, such as telephone triage and virtul consultations, as well as having every practitioner from doctors and nurses to pharmacists working at the peak of their scope.

      I think you mistake the argument, which is that Maori did not cede ‘ownership’ or control of any natural resources. Governments do not ‘own’ the electromagnetic spectrum, or water or things in the water, etc, but they do assert control over use within their territory.
      You would be better sticking to an argument that Maori relinquished the right to control any resources when they lost (by cession, sale or conquest) control of their own territory.

Last year I went to the grocery store at the mall, it was a long weekend, and late, so not many people there. And as I pulled in so did the ambulance. Inside the mall, by the chemist where they offer vaccinations, a guy was lying on the ground next to the couch where the vaccinated wait, screaming in pain with his hand across his body holding his arm.

Tonight hubby goes to the same supermarket and there was a medical emergency in aisle 2. They made an announcement over the mall’s loudspeaker , requesting any doctors or medics to come and give assistance.

No idea what happened in aisle 2 but certainly a year of strange occurrences. Hope the person is ok.
