Matthew Hooton’s Herald column this week zones in on immigration. He comments on various parties’ attitudes, but reserves his best stinger for Te Pāti Māori:

National’s rising star Erica Stanford cites work by the Productivity Commission and Labour’s favourite economic consultancy Berl, which suggests migrants who initially make passive investments to get residency then put two to three times as much into active investments.

Stanford accuses the Government of ignoring the Berl work, despite it being commissioned by no less than Immigration New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Act’s James McDowall wants all occupations on Labour’s “Green List” to have a fast track to residency. In practice, all properly qualified doctors, nurses, plumbers, electricians and farm managers would join the more limited range of professionals eligible to be fast-tracked to live here permanently.

On the left, the Greens’ Ricardo Menéndez March accuses Labour of allowing the rich to continue buying their way into residency while leaving low-wage foreign workers on precarious and temporary visas.

He recommends investors be given a three-year provisional visa, with residency confirmed at the end of that period only if a government audit confirms their money has gone into projects meeting viability, sustainability, desirability and human-rights tests.

Te Pāti Māori’s overarching position is that there has been quite enough immigration since whalers, sealers and missionaries started arriving in the late 1700s.

  I note the MSM here and everywhere isnt telling the truth about the collapse of the Sri Lankan economy because it doesnt fit their narrative.
  In 2019 the Government banned fertiliser to “fix Climate Change”.
  The crops failed and have kept on failing. This will happen to any agri economy like ours.
  But of course the Left particularly the Greens would rather have us all die of starvation than admit they are wrong and that humans have little impact on ‘Climate Change”.

    Sri Lanka stopped importing fertiliser because it had run out of foreign currency to buy it. They tried to cover up this failure by pretending it was a green initiative. Green policy was a useful scapegoat for corruption.

    According to powerline it was the decision of the government to ban synthetic fertiliser at the behest of the green lobby. The government implemented totally organic farming. Organic farming is nice for those who can afford it but it doesn’t work to feed the actual population of the country.
    
    As a result there were severe food shortages, the people rose up and rioted, the government fell. There is a new government now that will hopefully have some common sense.

    No matter the particular means, “reducing emissions” necessarily entails a significant diminution in standards of living (for the vast majority of us, not those pushing climate change panic, of course). “Transitioning to green energy” is also a euphemism, meaning huge taxpayer-funded capital investment in order to create the required infrastructure, with a concomitant decline in the availability, efficiency and affordability of energy. In other words, a select few will become exceedingly richer, while everyone else sinks into poverty, all on the most spurious and fanciful of justifications. But they can’t tell the mindless climate-cultists this, because they would immediately renounce their cult membership.

  Memo to Cindy and Grant.
  I run a Widget making company. Demand for my widgets is 1000 per day but I can only make 750. There is a chronic shortage of Widget makers. I eventually find some Widget makers but have to pay them $10 an hour more than my staff. Because I want to keep my existing staff I increase their pay by $10 an hour.
  Thats means my labour costs rise so in order to maintain my Gross Margin I have to increase the price of my Widgets. I can know make 1000 Widgets a day but my customers have to pay more for them. As I make good Widgets they are happy to pay as they pass the cost onto their customers who in turn pass their increased costs on to their customers.
  Its called inflation caused by demand exceeding supply resulting in rising prices.
  Now children I hope you understand what inflation is.

Dan is definitely not seduced by Jacindamania – calling her a PM for Twitter is one of his nicer comments. Winston Peters is described as NZ’s Nigel Farage, which I think belittles the latter. He praised Ms Bellis and slags off at how the media don’t do any scrutiny on the PM but worship her. Both Dan and Brendan describe them as like the media in UK being addicted to fear. They are also of the opinion that it was the MSM that brought down Boris because he wouldn’t lock the country down, and that the Conservatives are by far the best of a very bad bunch. Harry & Meagan are called deeply unpleasant liars.
I don’t think there will be any wedding invite for Dan. And he won’t care.

  Absolutely no-0ne I come across likes the PM. It’s surprising how often a casual encounter with a stranger spontaneously brings up the subject of her (and the government’s in general) adequacy in the role. She seems to be regarded as somewhat stupid, ignorant, malevolent, evasive – and so on. And the unspoken word is that she won’t get their vote next year. Haven’t heard about her going to the UN lately – I don’t think anyone cares, just get her gone!

  It would be interesting to get a subscription to read the comments underneath the podcast. Dan is spot on about the NZ media but doesn’t mention or isn’t aware that there are financial implications which Ardern is manipulating. I have read plenty of Dan’s commentary about NZ but I haven’t seen any discussion on the threat to democracy by the Ardern Government. Dan’s recent media spat with Mallard revealed that Mallard is or was some kind of family friend to the Woottons.

It was only a mater of time before Megan Woods the Housing Minister who had her wings clipped overthe Kainga Ora debt she has accumulated which experts believe will take 60 years to pay off for future generations is at it again by delving into the contestable $1 billion Excellaration Fund which was created by Finance Minister Grant Robertson by swiping it out of the Covid-19 fund.
This again is a bribe for votes at the 2023 Election by a Labour Party in Government and have their failed Kiwibuild program hit the headlines again with more promises for thousands of new houses to be built in the next decade.

  Firstly when you look at the area, it it’s deep in Māori electorates, I bet this is forged towards Māori. Secondly when you open up a subdivision you already pay through the consenting process for the infrastructure, is this yet another three water attempt to shaft councils? Is it the start without the words at giving Māori the land to charge for consents? Who knows, but it’s starting to stink to all high heavens as Andrew Little says.

    This is National’s crime policy? Its policy to assist police. Nothing about sentencing. Is it another big secret? or simply not reported? Scoop the shit off the street. Get the scum back into prison. Where is that the explicit policy?
    
    If elected next year, there are four new tools we will provide police to better crack down on gangs:
    
    We will ban gang patches and insignia in public spaces, removing a key tactic commonly used to intimidate innocent people.
    We will provide police with the power to issue dispersal notices to anyone they reasonably suspect is associated with a gang, allowing them to break up gang gatherings more easily.
    
    We will also provide police with the ability to issue Consorting Prohibition Notices, preventing gang members from associating or communicating with other gang members.
    
    Finally, and most importantly, police will be given the tools they need to stop gang members from accessing firearms by issuing Firearm Prohibition Orders, something I attempted to introduce through a Members Bill last year only for the Government to vote it down.

    Not sure why Labour haven’t noticed the policy of prison reduction wouldn’t be a fix for their failure with the health failures.
    By simply declaring certain illnesses as not being edible for hospital, such as cancer , Heart troubles, fat related etc.
    Hospital numbers would be dramatically lowered and the resulting surge in deaths could be declared COVID related, allowing the PM to preach from the pulpit about following her mask rules. Win win for Labour and the PM

Had Ardern met the first few protesters to arrive outside Parliament, or a representative on her behalf, and said a delegation of ten would be received inside to express their views – when they had decided what those were – those already there would have had to tell the rest when they assembled and called for Ardern to come out, that ”She’s done that already!”

Now since – Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that public consultation on co-governance with Māori will begin later in 2022
but – The closing date for submissions on the Water Services Entities Bill – including the clauses establishing co-governance [1] – close 11.59pm Friday, 22 July 2022 – like, today.
So when we ask about the public consultation on co-governance. we will be told –
”She’s done that already!”

According to the National wing of Clown World immigration restrictions are causing inflation – as there are not the workers to produce causing a shortage of goods and services which feeds higher prices. National also claim government spending is causing inflation.

Obvious solution: Start closing down useless government departments – free up people, and cut regulation – freeing up people who just admin regulation. The resulting surplus labour can be used to meet the market demand for goods and services. For example RNZ employees could become pizza shop employees.

  True enough, if the government wasn’t so intent on hiring most of the population to kill the productivity of the few remaining producers worker shortages would be considerably less.
  The Government hires people to make stupid compliance roadblocks, then the private sector either hires people or consultants to meet the compliance great for employment, not so good for building wealth and a sustainable economy.

  I definitely agree on closing down realistically most government departments but 90% of these idiots will stay unemployed because they don’t want to do real work they deem beneath them. So you still end up with no one doing the work and the employment rate rises and we either go into full recession or the government pays them out with some sort of redundancy scheme, causing even more loss of productivity and costs to the rest.
  
  The cold hard reality is that for anyone with aspiration, entry level jobs here do not pay enough to allow a standard of living that meets our expectation, so you would be mad to stay here.
  
  Many immigrants have completely different standards (due to situation in their home country) and are happy with the income from an entry level job or to work 60 hours to put just enough food on the table for the week.
  
  At least they want to work. We have 100k on the jobseeker that can’t be fucked working.
  
  Regarding the “entry level” jobs, it’s either immigrants who want to work, or get the cousins of the couch who dont. Who would you rather talk to in a shop?
  
  In terms of let’s call them professional jobs, we simply don’t have enough qualified workers here in every sector.
  
  It’s simple – if you have a qualification and are coming here to a job in your field it’s automatic residency. Leave the field within 3 years and your gone.
  
  If you disagree, keep enjoying 12 hours in Ed to be sent home and 6 weeks to get your car serviced or a builder around and then complain how much they charge. I asked a guy if he wanted to do a $15k job yesterday which had about $6k profit in it. Na can’t be fucked. Wasn’t even a hard job.

I wondered then and I still wonder how the HRC arrived at this stance. What was the process that resulted in them taking this position?

Were, for example, the human rights of natural women taken into account – i.e. the right not to be forced to compete against biological men?

More so, given the massive pushback we’ve seen in the years since from people right across society – I wonder whether Taine Polkinghorne and the HRC still maintain this position?

Have they ever considered that they were and are wrong?

    They have failed and continue to fail in understanding and championing one of the greatest human rights of all – the right of people to be free from state coercion in their private lives.
    
    Even worse, the Equal Opportunities Commissioner actively lauds and applauds state coercion and calls for more and more of it to force NZers to bend to her whim!
    
    If she really wanted to advance opportunities for Pacific and Maori as well as the rest of New Zealanders she should be lambasting the appalling education they receive at the hands of the state education monopoly where roughly half leave barely able to read, write or add up a shopping list.
    
    But instead we hear nothing about that and focussed on demonising employers and business owners. Easy targets.

Building site next to me is a folly.
They took the earth away and replaced it.
Then they dug holes in that earth and laid pipes.
More earth nicely rolled and compacted.
Then they dug up parts and now theyve put in the services, gas, power and I presume fibre in newly dug trenches.
And in doing so dug up a newly laid waste water line.
I want to see them build a church there now since its ‘holey’ ground

So as July dribbles to a close the overriding feeling out there in non-corporate business is that things are too tough.

Our small business of 20-odd employees for the first time in 50 years in likely to go on the block for sale as are many in our industry. The daily slog of sickness, absenteeism, lack of staff, increasing costs, increasing compliance and regulation coupled with expectation of staff for more income for no more output is too much – it is not worth the hassle, struggle or effort when there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Don’t feel sorry for ourselves as we’ll get our cash out however it means that another NZ owned business will be swallowed up by (likely Australian) a consolidator and the end customer will lose. The negative cumulative effect on the New Zimbabwean economy of this activity can’t be discounted.

I can’t but be cynical and believe those in power are supportive of this trend to corporatize this country. More and more I can see the invisible hand of the WEF in local actions.

    3). Mental Health
    4). Family emergencies
    5). Just not turning up
    
    Since the sick leave has been doubled and provisions for mental issues put in place every wage earner has close to doubled their days away from work.
    
    This is not just us – this is country wide. Every employer we talk to has the same issues. Every employee is now taking the piss and if you go hard at them, they just leave due to A LOT of alternative jobs at the moment.
    
    This is not conducive to productivity yet the government and the bureaucracy seem hell bent on this ideological change currently being pushed through business.

And her answer? New Zealanders should have to change to accommodate Pacific cultural norms and quirks!!!!

FFS. This is a major problem here – so-called community leaders treating Pacific people as victims, children and unable to look after themselves.

I remember when

When the British fires were shown on the TV news they displayed the danger that fire presents.
With this in mind, it is something that needs to be front and centre whenever we attempt to rescue or reduce the extermination tide.
Or, save the world.
During a drought, or dry summer, what would happen if a ‘regenerating area’ caught on fire, deliberate or otherwise.
What actions are needed to prevent ‘wilding’ areas becoming fire hazards.

A cherry on the top in this article too is the young people calling for young people to be priced out of work opportunities through the elimination of the starting out wage. Talk about an own goal.

All in all this makes a very strong argument for the counter-argument for another item called for in the article – the lowering of the voting age to 16.

Seems to be that given the stupidity and silliness shown here that, if anything, the voting age should be raised – to prevent these silly ideas taking on any currency.

  I do not think any 16 year old should be allowed to vote.
  Our legal system says that anyone that young is to be tried in a Youth Court. And anyone under 18 cannot sign a legal contract. These laws are fair enough as 16 year olds have yet to fully mature. But they (some of them anyway) want to be able to vote?? Can’t have your cake and eat it!

    I wouldn’t mind them voting if the young were at all aware /educated on the responsibilities of being a voter, and choosing suitable people to govern.
    I have a distinct feeling that they would vote for the newest, starriest ‘personality’, without caring about the outcome.
    There was a reason that 21 was considered the age of adulthood: mostly completed education/work experience/life experience/ taxpayer and a critical interest in where their taxes were spent.

    They all came her for aspirational reasons which could be purely selfish, or purely altruistic.
    The idea that white people are irredeemably a disaster for Maori is a poisonous myth making many people stupider.
    Again, Maori opinions were varied, even at the WORST of times in the mid-late 19th century. Take a look at the words of chiefs themselves written down (many were highly literate, due to missionary education, within missionary schools). Both before and at the time of the Treaty, read what they though of pakeha ways and pakeha living amonst them, or the Kohimarama conference of 1860, or the anthropological or philosophical works of Apirana Ngata or Te Rangihiroa/Peter Buck.
    You best not listen to 21st century bozo in youth parliament, or cowboy hat wearing clown. Anyone can learn to HATE, but I prefer to hear from the eloquent (and varied) words of their tupuna themselves.
    Maori never agreed on all things 200 years ago, any more than they can all agree today. And then you have hateful examples today who draw strength from blaming a white tribe for all their ills.
    The narrative these days is twisted and so fucking stupid. Goodie and baddies, Black and White.

They asked that: “The government should use every endeavour to have schools established throughout the colony, so that the Maori children may learn the English language, for by this they will be on the same footing as the Europeans, and will become acquainted with the means by which the Europeans have become great.”
      
      Piri Ropata and 200 others also asked that Māori children be given the opportunity to be instructed only in English at school.
      
      The great Sir Apirana Ngata — who served as Minister of Native Affairs, was ranked third in Cabinet and whose image graces our $50 note — was positively evangelical in his campaign in the 1920s and 1930s to have English given priority in Māori primary schools. He argued that proficiency in the English language was “the key with which to open the door to the sciences, the mechanised world, and many other callings”.
      
      Furthermore, it was an approach endorsed by many Māori parents, who backed teachers disciplining their children for speaking te reo because they believed learning English was the path to success.

In reality they have less than 1.3 billion, about 1/3rd as many 5 year olds as 50 year olds, birth rates that are still falling, a falling working age population and critically a plummeting number of fertile women (not helped by 10-20% excess men due to selective abortion).

… there is genuine frustration with Labour’s overreach on Treaty co-governance and clumsy attempts to expand the use of te reo. One such classic is the new name for the Auckland area health agency, Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland.
How about Health Auckland?
Given this body has to serve all of us, its name is likely to cause cultural laryngitis before boosting healthy patient outcomes. Health users are diverse and families do not need tube-feeding te reo but to be treated and, hopefully, made well.

  It’s only been in Lowry Bay for about 4 weeks. Prior to that it was in Porirua harbour. Maybe he forgot to pay his mooring fees and had to move it.
  Hard not to have a bit of sympathy for the poor bugger but boat building on a shoestring is not for the faint hearted.

Grant Robertson has been quiet lately, and I suspect he is mulling over his future.
His time as Finance Minister can be viewed as five years when the Government debt has more than doubled, up by $65B. His justification that people continue to lend us money is wearing thin, rather like a South Auckland family weighed down by ‘ready cash’ lenders believing they can spend their way out of the spiral.
And the results of all that borrowing are few and far between. So much wastage has been labelled as ‘Covid-related’ it is now a standing joke. There is no sign of the much vaunted ‘increased productivity’ which will return us to surplus, so he has fallen back on relying on inflation producing more tax to reduce the debt sometime in the future. Any suggestion of reining in the spend, or even examing it line by line is waved away as ‘slashing social services’. Labour are hoist by its own petard – they are committed to a ‘borrow and spend’ policy.
Amidst all this, Robertson will see his future is bleak. He needs to get out before the next election, regardless of the result. If defeated he will not be elected leader. If Labour win, he will bear the brunt of his part in the financial mess.

National/Act need to hammer home the lack of results from the spend up, and promise a full Commission of Enquiry into Government spending, including the role of one of the erstwhile guardians, the media, and Treasury. Revealing the advice Treasury has been giving would be very interesting, either way.

  You may recall that on 20 April 2020, the PM extended the Level 4 lockdown by five days. Treasury did ask the Productivity Commission to undertake a cost-benefit analysis on that decision. They did a good job IMO. It is well written and worth a read.
  
  The conclusion is that the 5-days extension had costs exceeding benefits by $770 million.

  I told everyone a couple of weeks ago, the Māori caucus has given Ardern and Robertson the ass card, they have been told to get out of the way, Ardern has been in parliament 2 days since March( makes a mockery of her being there maskless the other day when parliament is not sitting) And Robertson has not been seen since before he got COVID, and they were together in Aussie a few weeks ago, a very strange thing as they never send PM and dep PM away together

    But since that’s illegal in NZ, I suggested a legal alternative
    (Just need to work on the little hole in the knob with a needle until it gives you a constant stream when activated. You can get about a 3m distance)

Justice Jagose contended in his final judgment on Friday that the two men had not received the payments directly, but rather as trustees of the foundation and previous fund-raising entities.

As a result, he didn’t see their actions as satisfying the charge of “retention of control of the money”.

He said there was “nothing inherently dishonest about [the fund-raising organisations] obtaining the money”
