  The other day in discussion of masks and the lockdown measures generally, it was claimed that things would have been the same under National. They would have been just as draconian as Labour has been.
  I disagree with this premise and here’s why.
  
  First of all Labour has a spirit of socialist control. By that I mean at a deep level socialism is like a religion. And under the religion of socialism it’s essential to control people, because you know that you are heading for a socialist utopia. You believe in the maxim “to make an omelette you have to crack a few eggs”.
  
  At a deep, almost unconscious level, their attitude is to control people and to tell them what to do. They believe they know better because they are the enlightened ones and they see all that is wrong in New Zealand. So they use this as an opportunity to make radical changes. For example the new abortion law came in early in 2020 while we were in the grip of the beginning of the pandemic. While everyone was distracted a far-reaching radical piece of legislation was introduced and passed with very little comment from the media.
  
  When the pandemic hit they cheerfully closed down all businesses, with the exception of supermarkets and pharmacies. Command control of the economy is a feature, not a bug, of socialist governance. They also gained total control of the media with tens of millions of dollars given to promote left-wing causes. We now know the money is contingent on the media continuing to push the party line and if they don’t push the party line they have to pay the money back. We also know that most journalists are left-leaning and in their hearts agree with most of what a left-wing government does. We also see that given the rise of populist movements like Pres Trump, much of the media have abandoned any pretense of objectivity and have become left-wing activists.
  
  Now what would the situation have been under National? If National was the government, which it should have been sans Winston Peters, then I would argue things would have been completely different. First of all National does not have the spirit of socialist control. They believe at some level in free markets, they do not wish to turn us into a socialist utopia, they tend to be more measured and conservative and reluctant to introduce radical legislation, particularly in a pandemic or another emergency situation.
  
  Secondly they would not have the media on their side. They would not pay the media to push the party line. This is corruption on a massive scale and anathema to everything National believes in. Also they do not believe in command control of the economy.
  
  So under National, presumably Bill English, I imagine there would have been lockdowns of some sort? Every Western government appears to have followed China and then Italy and imposed some sort of lockdown. But it would not have been as long, it would not have been as drastic, as we have suffered. They would not have passed radical legislation and they would not seek to have changed New Zealand beyond all recognition. So the country we have now would essentially be the country we had prior to 2020.
  
  One would imagine that national would have opened up much sooner. They would be more sympathetic to the pleas of businesses and small businesses and got things going a lot quicker. They wouldn’t have spent as much money. The size of government would probably be half of what it is at the moment. We wouldn’t have had constant messaging on all platforms telling us to wear a mask, wash our hands, get a jab, etc, etc, etc.
  
  In summary National would have been more conservative, spent less money, locked us down a lot less and at the end of it we would have a country that is still recognisable. Also we wouldn’t now have a daily dose of ram raids and gun violence. Because if National knows how to do anything it is to crack down hard on criminal activity.
  
  While one would wish National to roll back the lefts agenda far more aggressively, it is also important to understand that we would still have the country of New Zealand that our ancestors bequeathed to us. National would adhere to its basic principles of freedom and free markets. Sadly Labour is giving us a trial run of socialism and that is what we suffer today.

    But the key feature of National is passivity. They equate this with being conservative, but in reality they are just a safe pair of hands working out how to actually deliver pieces of the puzzle lumped in by Labour which all lead to the Socialist nirvana.
    
    Timid with no guide principles, big talk in opposition but quiet acceptance and tinkering when in Power. Its the National Party way.
    
    National equals a managerial approach to governance which leads to a steady slip Left as National follow Labour as sure as the sun sets and rises daily.
    
    And this is a huge problem. We get rhetoric like Key decrying WFF as Middle class welfare, etc while in opposition AND then not getting rid of it when becoming PM. Yes they tightened the eligibility to WFF but it remained and it is the worst type of prop, both for workers who become reliant on it and employers who love as it suppresses wage growth
    
    People will say you need to be pragmatic, take the electorate with you etc etc.
    
    Actually NO! Most of the electorate pay zero attention to politics. They rely on the Media… and we all know fairness, balance and accuracy play little part in NZ media reporting on politics…
    
    The NZ media will always attack National, and National stupidly take a go slow process to reform as a result. Well its high time to say eff you to the NZ Media and just ram policy through and dismantle the Socialist BS permeating our government agencies and institutions.
    
    If that is done it will deliver economic growth and money in peoples pockets changes ideology. It is that simple.
    
    Reform the Tax system, make the first 25 to 30K of earnings tax free hence removing the need for workers to need a WFF top up. Dismantle the massive government machinery put in place – don’t put head count caps on, sack a raft of government employees and simplify regulations and rules to mean you dont need all those policy workers and enforcement agents. Let business grow and create jobs and wealth.
    
    Wont happen of course – NZ will end up with the wets like Chris Bishop run it in 10 years and the softly, softly descent into 3rd world status will continue
    
    National need to run a message base on NZ being a land populated by settlers who where bold and self reliant. And from that say we as New Zealanders of 21st century need to be the same to honour our founders, Maori and Non Maori, through our self reliance and enterprising spirit.

      The biggest issue for the next election is the preservation of democracy. Labour is already chipping away at democracy as far as it dares to try and secure the next election.       They do need to do this and they would be successful in doing so, but they never would because implicit in the phrase “settlers who where bold and self reliant” is maleness and Whiteness, neither of which they are allowed to champion due to their self-imposed constraint by the dictates of progressive leftist doctrine. Having imbibed the same worldview of the left, rather than trying to appeal to their natural constituency, they’ll instead try to pander to Maori, other minorities and women.

    I think what is agreed is the Nats would have been guided by the same experts.
    Agree that they would not have been so stupid to fully lock the country down for more than a year, and the bloody 33day home detention was pathetic. Business should have been allowed to function even if partly, for instance this idiotic government were told by Gib manufacturers that to not let the factories operate would create a shortage, that shortage happened and did not recover, common sense should have prevailed, but no not with these Marxists.

To watch the Democrat political kangaroo court against Trump and all his allies over the January 6 capital riot is galling, when the likes of Clinton and co get away scot-free. Now the contempt charges against Bannon.

Reading the articles is clear the whole House committee hearing is a political hatchet job on their opponents. This is why so many voters in America feel the system is broken, and why many of them gathered outside the capital on that fateful day up Pennsylvania Avenue.

Nancy Pelosi has much to do with the incident on January 6 as Donald Trump’s speech and his call for the protestors to go home and be peaceful.

    There is nothing to defend for Pelosi but that is a completely different issue to what you believe happened prior to and on Jan 6 and why you believe it.
    You have previously made the claim about Trump and the National Guard but the case you present is flawed and is considerably different to accounts I have read across multiple other platforms.
    
    I’ll ignore the Posse Comitatus Act and the various legal arguments that entails.
    
    Do you have evidence that Trump asked for the troops 2 weeks out?
    Was it made public at that time that he wanted troops there?
    Was a reason given at that time?
    
    Do you have evidence that Pelosi blocked the request?
    
    Your claim that Pelosi “knew the peaceful rally would be infiltrated” makes no sense.
    
    Who was claiming it was going to be a peaceful rally?
    According to you, Trump knew it was going to be violent, otherwise he wouldn’t have wanted the troops.
    You also claim Pelosi knew it would be violent so where does “peaceful” come from?
    
    If Trump knew something was going to happen, as he must have to request the troops, why did he still direct those at the rally on Jan 6 to march on the Capitol?
    When he already knew it was going to be violent and then he actually saw the violence on TV, why did he not take any action or intervene in any way for some hours?
    
    Something else – of ALL of the Trump Rallies, how come this was the ONLY violent one?
    How many of the other rallies were conducted near the Capitol during the certification of an election that Trump claimed was fraudulent?
    At how many of the other rallies did Trump direct the crowd to take direct action then and there?
    
    Again though, you claim Trump knew at least 2 weeks out that this would turn violent, why did he do nothing, repeat nothing, to change the outcome once his attempt to “organise 10K to 20K troops of the National Guard two weeks before Jan 6th” failed?

      Dick, ‘do I have evidence?’ Trump has said it many times in many videos. Pelosi stopped the troops.
      Your last paragraph “why did he do nothing?” He tried. Even as Commander in Chief, he could not do it.
      You must watch different news/info/email outlets than I do. I do not go near CNN, MSNBC, or even “The View” as you obviously do.

        Saying “Pelosi stopped the troops” is not evidence that Pelosi stopped the troops.
        
        What did Trump try?
        Did he try telling the protesters to go home? Not until it was too late.
        
        I partake of a wide variety of news sources and do not rely on any 1 in particular.
        You should try it.
        It may make you think….but then again.

    A fun ride. It’s a family outing for us, rather than an extreme trail bash. We park at Maymorn station and cycle right over to Featherston for coffee where after we take the train back through to Maymorn. It’s a good way for visitors to Welly to see some picturesque scenery while getting a bit of exercise.

  I love nature. Our suburban home has seen a massive increase in native birds thanks to a long-running pest eradication program that mrs kk and I have been supporting. Load of territorial Tuis. A few Kereru. Last week we had a group of Kingfishers stop by. Are earlier in the year a Morepork move into a tree outside our bedroom window. His/her call was initially pretty cute, but it hard to unhear at 4am.

Some back of the fag packet math. Last week approx 64k NZers reported testing positive for Covid-19. Lets assume the real figure is double that, ie that there’s an under reporting factor of 2. Lets assume the illness lasts 7 days (infectiousness apparently lasts 10 days for the ‘vaccinated’, but let’s ignore that too). Assuming the infection rate stays static for a week (if we net off risk of increase with risk of decrease) we can postulate that around 900k New Zealander have Covid-19 right now. That’s around 17% of our population. Of course in reality this could be 20%, or 10%. But what it most certainly isn’t is 0%

The experimental genetic ‘vaccines’ don’t seem to be too effective but I expect surfing, Aunty and milky to be along shortly to comprehensively prove me wrong.

    Facemasks are not that useful for preventing infection. Most people don’t wear them properly and tend to fiddle with them which increases their chances of transferring virus particles from their hands to their mouth/nose/eyes.

      The lack of efficacy of masks for an aerosol based virus has been known for many years. This wasn’t a naughty little “white lie” to protect the health workers.
      The evidence of lack of efficacy has been around for many years and it is even more clear now after a couple of years of real world studies and available data. Masks do close to sweet FA to prevent infection or transmission of aerosol based viruses.

  Some are so close that if everyone is inoculated then the disease doesn’t spread. Measles for example.
  Also most don’t need a booster or prior infection provides protection.
  The covid-19 vaccines don’t provide 100% protection from infection, needs boosting and prior infection doesn’t help.

  I would say that the plane was going from Queenstown to Auckland with a drop off in Wellington. Wellington was aborted, good choice in my opinion.

  A 15yo stranded alone in Auckland, even in the airport, is no small thing.
  For a start that part of Auckland has less than the best of reputations.
  A Qantas plane I was on about eighteen years ago was diverted to Frankfurt due to difficulties at Heathrow. Everyone was taken to a nearby hotel for the night.
  Then again, although Jetstar is owned by Qantas I wouldn’t expect they care too much about their customers’ well-being once they have their money.

  Interestingly, re the big unmasked group photo, I didn’t see any sign of masks being held after being (supposedly) removed. You would think a blue/white tinge in someones hand would be easy to spot. Of course the photographer ‘may’ have photoshopped that out, maybe.

      Our kids had mask exemptions last time they tried this rubbish and were some of the last kids at the school to catch it.
      
      When they did get it, one was asymptomatic and the other was a bit off colour for half a day.

  The Youth Parliament apparently overwhelmingly supported the lowering of the voting age to 16. The following day, a whole lot of Youth MP’s walked out of the Youth Parliament in protest at a speech about guns from Act MP’s Nicole McKee’s Youth MP.
  
  One thing that comes with maturity is the ability for your opinions to be challenged without you lashing out. I would suggest that those MP’s who chose to cause a stunt by walking out have done the cause of lowering the voting age more harm than good.

I’ve just read a long piece in The New Zealand Herald written by Jane Phare.
It’s about the meanness and nastiness of [mainly] men in the Family Court.
The story is heavily pro-women-as-victims.
It might be useful if Miss Phare gets to write another story, about how some women use the Family Court to their advantage
My contact with the Family Court was negligible. The former Mrs TripeWryter, God bless ‘er, had higher priorities than me and our kids.
Our arrangements were pretty straight-forward, and she and he went on their way to live their new life elsewhere.
But in the last 40 years I’ve known men who had to fight to see their kids at their own expense.
Their former partners were funded by legal aid. And the mothers can come up with all sorts of plausible reasons a man should not be anywhere near his kids especially his young daughters.
I knew a man who tried to fight his ex in Court for several years. Mostly about custody arrangements and visits. In the end he gave up. His former wife was more cunning and more manipulative and she was egged on by her well-known woman brief.
In the end he gave up and went overseas. I drove him to the airport.
After several years the children defied their mother and went to visit him. He didn’t justify anything. If they asked him he told them. They decided that he had been done a huge injustice.
They live in the same area now. The missus is on to her third marriage here in New Zealand. The children have nothing to do with her.
I have no doubt that women suffer in the Family Court. But from what I’ve been told it cuts both ways.
Maybe Jane Phare will write a story about that one day.

  Things like that did happen to me. Quite stressful and difficult. A lot of the problems were instigated by social workers and the like.
  All the shit has gone now. My ex Wife and her Husband are my friends. So are the grown up Children.

  My ex wife has a bad case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
  Because I refused to let her sell the family home and spend all the money on herself we separated.
  We had one son together who was 2 years old at the time.
  She immediately decided she would take him and move far away, I was forced to stop her via Family Court.
  I won and secured a Parenting Order giving me regular weekends with my son, at the cost of 15k in lawyers fees.
  For 6 years I never missed a contact day, then out of the blue she emailed me and said she was moving 800km away and taking my son with her.
  I pointed out that she can’t do that but she did it anyway.
  
  Back to Court I go, she was made to adhere to the Parenting Order, she has done this by flying 800km and back every weekend and flying my son every other weekend as well.
  It’s been almost 2 years now and a hearing date still won’t be until next year, meanwhile I have spent another 15k on lawyers and it’s not over by a long shot.
  As Maggie would say…… Sheesh!!!

      She has been diagnosed with depression and medicated several time but she will not listen to me, or her doctor, or her lawyer.

    Classic BMW, a Corvette, and a Delorean. Electric motors come from crashed electric cars, seems there is no shortage. The transmission stays and the Electric motor has an adapter plate. Manual or auto does not mater. Manual has a clutch same as before. Auto has the same fluid clutch.

      I mean, the BMW aside, those cars listed had pretty awful engines from factory (especially if it was a Malaise era Corvette, the 1982 barely made 200hp from a massive 5.0 V8!) The Renault 2.7 V6 in the Delorean was always panned as underpowered, too, at around 130hp/97kW – less than a new Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4.

The Taxpayers’ Union delivered boxes and boxes of Three Waters submissions to Parliament yesterday; 62,782 of them, individually printed out.

Why? Because someone in Parliament decided that e-mailed submissions were not acceptable. I understand that the printer was still going late into the night, and there were additional deliveries made. In addition, more than 15,000 submissions were made via the National Party’s web page, in addition to those which were made directly to the Parliament website.

The Government should be in no doubt whatsoever that Three Waters is deeply unpopular with the voting public. I look forward to my invitation to make my submission to the select committee in due course, by which time the polls will be sending even more dire messages to Labour MP’s as to their employment prospects beyond 2023.

Apparently both a NZ Herald article AND a Newstalk ZB Heather du Plessis-Allan audio segment discussing a NZ On Air-funded documentary on political activist Dr Siouxsie Wiles have been “disappeared” from the Internet.
Anyone know what this is all about?

Some fun:

8. Take 2 apples from 3 apples. What do you have?
9. How many animals of each species did Moses take with him in the Ark?
10. If you drove a bus with 43 people on board from Chicago and stopped at Pittsburgh to pick up 7 more people and drop off 5 passengers and at Cleveland to drop off 8 passengers and pick up 4 more and eventually arrive at Philadelphia 20 hours later, what’s the name of the driver?
ANSWERS :
1. All of them. Every month has at least 28 days.
2. 1 hour. If you take a pill at 1 o’clock, then another at 1.30 and the last at 2 o’clock, they will be taken in 1 hour.
3. 1 hour. It is a wind up alarm clock which cannot discriminate between a.m. and p.m.
4. 70. Dividing by half is the same as multiplying by 2.
5. 9 live sheep.
6. The match.
7. White. If all walls face south, the house must be on the North Pole.
8. 2 apples. I HAVE 3 APPLES, YOU TAKE 2, WHAT DO YOU HAVE?
9. None. It was Noah, not Moses.
10. YOU are the driver.

Wellington named the global capital of baby talk
From small tribes in the remote Pacific islands to the teeming cities of China, humans share the common language of baby talk – but new research has discovered that Wellington, New Zealand, is the global capital of cooing.
An international study, published in Nature Human Behaviour, collected 1615 recordings of 410 people from 21 societies speaking and singing to an adult and then a baby in more than a dozen languages.

Three Waters is apparently going to save local authorities from Borrowing 185 Billion Dollars. This borrowing will be off the crown balance sheet so presumably at some sort of premium to Government stock. There is also the cost of 4 chunky bureaucacies and a bit of maintenance. Even without paying for the nationalised assets there will an enormous amount of cash to be found every day to pay for all this. Has anyone calculated how much water users will need to pay per cubic meter and any explanation as to how this will be $9,000 per household ( which I think is what Jacinda said it would be ) less than if all this was left to local authorities?

It all sounds like fairyland economics to me.

Yes Maggie, many have been going through quite a bad period starting about November 2017 until now, including old, stale, white males, and perhaps some being those who assembled on the Auckland motorway later this morning, without anyone taking advantage of the target they presented.
Even as the Police let them wander on, they don’t have anything heavy like SWAT armoured vehicles to drive north, as was shown by the lack of Police heavy-towing capacity outside Parliament earlier in the year.

  Jack Reacher is only a non de plume for a guy who works in the PR Dept for a chain of supermarkets in the US.
  He travels around the shops reaching to get stuff for little old ladies from high shelves.
