    At the heart of GAE she did what was needed. Wrong or right. The interest rates had been rising steady until Cindy did what she had to. The interest rates will go up again, later, but she stabilized them.
    
    NZ is a satellite state of GAE. GAE has suffered a big blow in the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. Its not really working out as intended. They are angry and dismayed. Had Cindy not groveled before GAE it would have gone very badly for NZ. It will yet, but not for now.

The Herald today includes a Listener article (paywalled) by Danyl McLauchlan – Pursuing NZ’s richest earners – would a wealth tax work?

Just focusing on one small aspect of the article, he says –

Public health researchers had long warned that these could have dire health consequences. In a 2021 paper co-authored by epidemiologist Michael Baker, researchers found that damp and mouldy housing accounted for a “substantial proportion of the burden of disease in New Zealand”. They estimated that it caused 229 deaths annually, with a total cost to society of about a billion dollars.

Implication is those evil landlords are the big problem, because otherwise the occupants are not taking personal responsibility for cleaning and heating their homes and are causing damp by their own actions.

Now strangely enough one of the authors of that study was the person who said this, link below –

University of Otago public health professor Philippa Howden-Chapman said overcrowding was the single biggest housing-related cause of poor mental and physical health.

Where are the costs and deaths of little children related to that? Cherry picking for the narrative?

  I haven’t read the article but if the tax incentives to invest in NZ are removed then investors will search out better returns offshore. The Government will still get its tax share but NZ businesses will find it harder to attract capital. The NZ media will say everything is great but they can’t hide the BS forever.

Have done several road trips from Auckland in the last few weeks. To Wellington, to Gisborne, to Napier and New Plymouth.

The state of our roads is absolutely deplorable and inexcusable. There a regularly huge holes in the tar seal that shake the whole car and must threaten tire safety. They are hard to see and avoid, especially if its raining. There are poorly patched rough sections, cracks, low areas holding surface water, and generally rough surfaces. It makes a drive a nightmare. Dodging holes is dangerous and driving slightly out of one’s lane is tempting but invites trouble.

The new sections – Hamilton bypass, Transmission Gully – are excellent. Great engineering and a pleasure to drive. However, going north out of Taupo, sections on the Gisborne road to Opotiki for example are a nightmare and are just not acceptable.

Winter maintenance must be difficult but the situation is now so bad and so dangerous it needs a major reappraisal. If there are funds to waste on cycle tracks and harbour crossing plans there is no shortage of money for looking after what we already have.

Surely the AA could be doing more?? The problems need better highlighting.

    I would not drive in Canterbury at night. I have lowered my speed and am on the watch for potholes. It simply was not like this a year ago. My partner has lived here for decades and has never seen it like this.
    
    We deserve an explanation. In all seriousness this is what you see in failing states. The roads go. And the hospitals and the education system. Tribal elites emerge. The leader of the country tells us “we can do democracy in a more sophisticated way.” (She said that in Parliament.)
    
    Then in failed states, the leader talks a lot about “misinformation”. Then crime ramps up. The economy tanks with debt rising and inflation taking off.
    
    Laugh at me all you want. This is what failed states look like in the early stages of the process.
    
    Those potholes are more ominous than you think. 😕

  You wanna try the South Island. From what i’ve seen of the North, the South is MUCH worse. I drove SH1 north from Christchurch yet again last week, i see they have installed new median barriers (the wired ones) in the section north of the motorway, on a nice (largely) straight road with one lane either way….clearly a very dangerous spot. But the massive craters in the road south of the Hundalees and particularly north of Kekerengu through to Picton are a disgrace. Very dangerous to hit those at 100kmh. I don’t get it, do EVs not drive on state highways (probably not based on the thread last week on this), or can they only do 60kmh?

      You are not wrong. It stems from the ACC rules that certain sectors of the population who are more likely to be injured (and can be identified) should pay more for their own rehabilitation.
      
      Same thinking as to why forestry workers have higher ACC work levies than office workers.

    I think that’s because the opening has been so slow and gradual. I do the Akl-Waikato trip about once a month so just missed on the opening.
    
    The funny thing is that I should be excited about it because I have been waiting literally for decades for this, and I’m not including teenage years, but simply since the early 2000’s when various intermediate parts were opened (like the Long Swamp and Ohinewai sections) and it was obvious what they were aiming for.
    
    Maybe it’s just because it’s flat and boring? I went to a Huntly open day in 2018, then did the bicycle trip in 2019. The joke was that my first drive of it was on the day before the shutdown heading to Wellington to an emergency child retrieval mission. Black, wet – and everybody doing 130 because we all knew the cops were prepping for the Lockdown. But it’s a great drive.
    
    The Ham section…. meh. But what I’m really looking forward to is getting from Auckland to a long-time destination in less than 2 hours – vs 2.5+ for years. 🙂

  The roadworks through Dome Valley have been going on for at least 12 months, and fucked if I can actually work out what they’re actually trying to do.
  
  Then you’re a brave soul if you venture North of Whangarei…
  
  You need to have your suspension replaced after every trip between Whangarei and the Bay of Islands. I swear there is a pile of axles on the side of the road at the train tracks just South of the Towai pub – every time you drive over them it seems like your front axle is ripped out.
  
  But these fucking morons are redoing the train line between Whangarei and Ohaewai, for maybe 4 passengers a week, at god only can guess what cost.

    Dome valley is close to 2 years now. From what I can see it is likely to be a bottleneck at the end of the new motorway extension.
    We will be driving through the Dome Valley roadworks for the 3rd Xmas holidays this year. I think a 4th is more likely than not. That’s an extraordinary length of time. Plus it would be 50/50 if on completion it is not back under repair or reconfiguration within 6 months due to some cockup.

    That railway crossing has been an axle-breaker for years with absolutely nothing done to fix it. Going north I drive so far to the left of it I am practically off the road to cross it with least damage. NZTA are criminally useless and incompetent. So is Auckland Transport. The southern approach to Whangarei has been (not) under construction for years with nothing happening. The road north of Paihia had drains cut across it years ago that were filled, subsided and never fixed. It’s third world incompetence, corruption and neglect managed by political idiots.

  A few years ago I spent a week driving around the state of Oregon in the US. I was struck by the quality of the roads and the rarity or road repair works compared to New Zealand. (I do not know about other parts of the US, and am told it is patchy.)
  What I suspect is that NZ is addicted to cheap, low quality road construction techniques. If done properly (a big if), it’s appears fine when it is new – but under local conditions it deteriorates quickly and requires endless repairs.

Who is behinf Ardern’s New Zealand political destruction, and that of the Labour Party ?
It would appear that such as the Moarification of New Zealand (sorry Aotearoa) by way of say Three Waters and other such pro Maori legislation.
I see it yesterday’s papers that there is the advert for four (4) CEOs for each of the four Maori Tribal areas who will control all the rain,(not floods of course), lakes, sewerage and of course in the Ngai Tahu Tribal zone will control nearly 80% of the country’s electricity.
I understood that many of these top appointments have already been agreed behind doors in Wellington, with huge financial emoluments for each and multi millions ready to get it moving -which is already underway for some months with employees and offices already.
Called Fait Accomplie – irespective of any so called Select Committees.
The enormous damage is done and virtually irreparable. – Watch this space !
Bye Labour, but don’t forget she will blame everybody but the person at the top.

Not that I watched any of the NZ “news” programmes anyway, but the house has been absolutely bliss since we stopped watching terrestrial TV. The proposal to drop storm water from the 3 waters scam is just a distraction from the core issue, that being the co-governance issue.
Its telling when all the news items on 3 waters are only looking at the water issues, and none mention the governance, the control areas based on iwi boundaries or who benefits financially form the changes. It sure isn’t the rate payer.
I have yet to see any MSM explain how the bureaucratic hierarchy, particularly iwi involvement, is going to improve how rate/tax payers are going to be better off with their water. The fact this is not happening speaks volumes about both the bias of the MSM and the lack of validity in the argument that co-governance of assets is in the best interest of all.
When you add the lack of transparency over the Māori consolation over the He Puapua, and the limited time for others to review the implications of this separatist agenda, you can see the power the Māori caucus over this government and the direction it is taking the country.

    Sewerage and stormwater are both problems that must be disposed of in a costly manner.

  Storm water is important. We need proper infrastructure to avoid flooding and filling the beaches with raw sewerage. It will be better if it’s out of the co-governance racket, otherwise anything that gets done will have to pass the “what’s in it for our people” test.

The kids are fu&ked off having to wear face nappies again given the mandate directed at the schools from another nasty female Labour Minister (are there any nice ones?) with a nasty worded ‘or else’ letter to schools.

Predictably there are a number of masking narratives at play in our MSM this morning including Trev’s missus (her absence will be the only good point of the Speaker’s bauble) yet at no stage is there offered up an alternative voice.

I have now gone 7 weeks without a single mask usage. During that time haven’t caught Kung Flu, Gorillapox, the flu or anything else. You can see the pain in employees eyes of large corporates, government departments or local bodies – all they want to do is remove their muzzle.

It’s sad when I walk by masked employees all I think about is the poor animals at the SPCA. Like the animals wanting a home all these employees want to do is breathe oxygen and smile again.

I take joy in the fact that we are winning. Daily there are more converts to team non masks. Even Te Reo Luxon looks like he is (almost) there. Watch for the admission of defeat by “Our Glorious Leader” just in time for summer holidays. For those suckers/sheeple that follow the rules – 5 more months boys

    Certainly, around Ilam I will get some disapproving looks from the gentry, but no one approaches to admonish me.

      I live in St Albans. I popped into ‘Fresh Choice’ the other day. A guy came in without a mask. The checkout supervisor told him to get out. I went to riverside market yesterday for lunch. It was packed. I counted two people without a mask.

  I saw the email from the school this morning and had to ask them to send out another email (which of course they haven’t) explaining to parents that masks are only recommended and not compulsory. They have also stated that the kids have to be medically exempt not to wear one, which isn’t true. The only requirement is for the childs parent to inform the school that they do not want their child to wear a mask.
  This is solely a scare mongering tactic as singing, dancing, drama, sports and where not practical are exempt. Pretty well all the stuff where spread of disease will be the most prevalent.

    I would add that because mas wearing in schools is not mandated, the schools have no grounds to suspend any student.

    The only way this works is ignoring the rules when you can. The more of us that do that in supermarkets, malls and service station the more the sheelpe will be encouraged to remove the face nappies. It’s contagious – probably more so than KungFlu.

The state of our roads is indeed appalling. A big loop through the Waikato yesterday showed just how much damage the highways have suffered and how little action there appears to be to fix it. Any repairs seem to be of the patch-it-up variety.

    This is income tax. These households still pay tax on items purchased through the likes of gst, fuel excise and even the tax businesses pay for making a profit.
    Working for Families is a terrible way of topping up families pay packets and disadvantage a lot of people. Lowering tax percentages and moving the thresholds would be a better idea. However doing this would mean the powers to be wouldn’t have as much control over the people who are reliant on it.

Racist attack in Albany linked by the Herald to White people, but is it?

The Headline says there is a violent racist attack. Followed by a video for a movie called “White Guilt.”

The description of the attack by the daughter reads, ““As he (the Chinese father) approached the supermarket entrance he noticed a tall, well-built white man staring at him, she said.
Her father thought he may have bumped the man as he walked past so turned around to say sorry.
And then the other man just started swearing at my dad and saying … really harmful language to him.
The comments included “go back to where you’re from” “

(Oh wait what. Read it carefully. So he saw a White man who was staring at him. Which makes you think it is white man that is the problem. But it was “the Other man” who swore at him? Who is the Other man? What race is he? The article never says.)

“”My dad was really confused about what he did to this man,” she said. Her father asked the assailant what he had done, at which point the attack turned physical.”” (Who is the assailant? The White man or the Other man? The staring and well-built description makes you think it is White man.)

“”He was trying to shield himself and ended up on the floor. ” “The other man kept on kicking him and hitting him.”” (So Other man is hitting and kicking him. What is Other Man’s race. Was the white man also an assailant or only Other man?)

“”One of the parties left the premises, the other was supported by the store team until police arrived.” (This only describes two parties. Weren’t their three parties; The White man, Other man, and Chinese man?? )

““Police confirmed they received a report of an assault at the Don McKinnon Drive supermarket on Sunday morning.
“A man was reported to have been verbally abusive towards two people and one of them was assaulted,” a spokeswoman said.
“Thankfully the victim was not seriously injured by this assault but was understandably shaken by this incident.””
(So the report to police says there was only one man who was verbally abusive and two victims of the verbal abuse. We know that “Other man” was verbally abusive , and there is only one man reported to police as verbally abusive, so therefore White man cannot be one of the verbal abusers? Only one person was physically assaulted. Who did the physical assault. We know from above that “Other man” was an assailant who kept on kicking him and hitting him. And Other man did the verbal abuse. But what if anything is White mans role. We can determine only one person, Other Man, verbally assaulted the victim, but how many people physically assaulted him. We know Other man definitely physically assaulted the victim was anyone else involved.

So why was white even named in the story, what was his role and why is his race given? )

“”While we are in the very early stages of our inquiries, we are keeping an open mind into the motivation of this assault, including if it was racially motivated.” (So the motivation is unknown by police, yet the Herald has determined it is racist and linked it to white people)

The Herald notes another attack happened at a mall in Sylvia park. Yet no race is given in previous articles.

Meng Foon is calling for legislation change due to this attack. As a white skinned person this makes me feel terrible and is designed to do so. But on second reading the white person is a red herring. Aren’t we entitled to the facts. Pak n save needs to release the CCTV.

It sounds like a shocking attack motivation unknown and the race of the attacker unknown. It is however definitely a racist article.

  My wife was there at the time of this incident with one of her friends and they saw this happen in front of their eyes.
  The Herald reporting doesn’t jibe with what they saw.
  In short…
  – Somebody running through the mall bowled over the old guy.
  – Seems the guy who was running was being chased by a bunch of other guys.
  – The old guy who was bowled over went down face-first, which resulted in blood gushing everywhere from his face.
  – The guy who bowled him over was basically lying all over the old guy as they both went to ground, and when he got up he trampled over him a bit more as he continued to try and evade the bunch of people chasing him. (no concern shown about what he’d just done. Prick.)
  – Old guy’s wife was (unsurprisingly) a bit hysterical.
  – The bunch of people chasing the one being chased caught up with him as he got outside and started laying into him (details from wife a bit thin at this point – see below).
  – Wife and friend thought it would be prudent to exit the premises, vowing never to return.
  – Wife and friend beat a hasty path out of the joint.
  – As they were leaving they saw both security and police rushing to the scene.
  
  So the old guy wasn’t the intended victim. He was just somebody in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor bastard.
  If you were to guess at the ethnicity of the thugs involved, you’d likely be right.
  Wife was surprised that nobody was arrested, given that they were right there.

  That article is very confusingly written (maybe intentionally, maybe because our supposed journalists have no proper editing and critique of their pieces anymore before publishing to the web)
  
  One person stared, the other person attacked. Who was the attacker? What race was the attacker?
  
  Why are the NZ Herald producing incoherent pieces with huge factual holes in the story?

  Seems pretty clear to me when reading the article that ‘the other man’ is referring to the white guy who stared and then abused and attacked the Chinese one.
  i.e. only 2 people in this story: Chinese dad, and “other guy”.
  
  BUT the need to say ‘white+racist’ is interesting given the lack of ethnicity stated around assault on bus drivers, or ram raids, or gang shootings, or road rage, youth violence, or burglaries, etc etc.
  It really is only worth stating the race if the police are looking for someone and a description is needed. Otherwise, they should do it every time or not at all.
  But I believe we know the games that ‘journalists’ play, consciously or not.

Mother in law has Covid but she cant get Paxlovid despite being 72, she is 3 years to young but if she was Maori her eligibility would move to 50 if she hadnt completed her 3 shot vaccine routine ( she has).

    Agree. I’m not usually a huge Tamaki fan. In particular, you can be quite sure gay sex doesn’t cause earthquakes. But on the mandates he is right. Experimental Vaccine Mandates are deeply wrong. Authoritarianism is wrong. Vaccine passports are wrong. Media manipulation and bias is wrong. And something very dark is happening in our country. Tamaki is the one boldly speaking against it for which he paid the cost of imprisonment, for organising an outdoor protest against authoritarian vax rules which threaten the bill of rights.   it appears from TFRC Facebook posts that they had been working with Police on traffic management etc for the protest (including the motorway part for which the Police provided a lead vehicle) for some time. They even named the officer they dealt with primarily who was super helpful.

So Plumtree and Mooar have been kicked to the kerbside and all is well in the All Blacks world.
John Plumtree probably had to go as he was absolutely shattered after the third Irish test.
Except in a few short months, both the Black Ferns and All Black coaching teams have had to be fixed.
This suggest serious lack of appreciation of the requirements for those appointed to coaching selection panels.
Have we been outflanked by the rest of the world.
Is there part of the Irish success that we see but don’t quite appreciate fully.
Gibson-Park, Lowe and Bundee Aki may have all become All Blacks but is it no certainty.
Their success is due to them being part of a team structure where they understand their roles.
Our system gives players more freedom but that also means more chances of losing their support players and becoming isolated.
Why are we looking to Canterbury for guidance.
Because they alone in New Zealand play this type of rugby and it starts in their junior grades. (Perhaps Taranaki and Otago.)
We must learn to integrate our Polynesian players into this style.
Use their strengths and reduce their weaknesses.

This is an obvious slow unwind of the Covid 19 fear propaganda – its a classic slow withdraw and offer something else (in this case the Flu) with intent of rinsing the Covid 19 messaging all together without ever acknowledging it is no long an issue.

I reckon that this change is in response to focus groups of non Karens basically calling enough on the whole wretched propaganda exercise i.e. the spell is breaking in larger and larger chunks of the population, so its time for Labour and their enabling Bureaucracy to quietly withdraw the campaign.

Labour and their advisers in the marketing and communications industry designed the fear campaign to generate unseen, outside of wartime, control over the population.

The techniques used directly stimulated what is referred to as System 1 thinking (see Thinking, Fast and Slow for a description of this thinking style), which is basically your fight or flight/quick response brain function.

Its based on lazy heuristic processing and is super fast and devoid of rational consideration. Its their to get you out of the way of predators and to deal with daily repetitive tasks not requiring careful analysis. Its problem is it can be fooled in making some decisions by disguising the presenters desired outcome or by using loaded and normally emotive/scary messaging

Marketers target it constantly in ads – the association of beauty with products or the constant germ phobia advertising for hand sanitiser (which is basically not needed in most cases). But the techniques can be much more subtle that a scantily clad young woman on a muscle car.

I am appalled at the actions of Labour and their supporters the Greens and their enablers in Academia & the Government Bureaucracy. Cynical, manipulative, exploitative and frankly unacceptable actions in a democracy.

We are caught in a slow descent to dictatorship dressed up as a democratic nation. And unfortunately National wont change a thing if elected…. what a sad and sorry mess our political class has lead us into

So does that mean more than 75% of the Green membership is satisfied with Marama Davidson’s leadership?

If so looks like “achievement” counts for nothing with the Green, they want “feelz” and virtue signalling!

Saying that because Shaw “achieved” the Greens wish to screw over NZ’s energy/economy …. but according to the Green membership that’s not good enough it seems!

Whereas Davidson couldn’t even “achieve” anything in her portfolios (I recall her criticising the lack of housing …. umm her own portfolio) …. but according to the Green membership it seems that is perfectly fine!

Mahuta appointed commissioners are going to give 8 million dollars of ratepayer money to local maori, since they are such wonderful deserving people. Apparently this seems possible under co-governance, where maori own half of public assets, if not in law, in principle.

They are such a wonderful people though. They should get more . There will be public consultation, but that is merely a formality for Mahuta’s commissioners.

Currently we are in no mans land, trying to plan ahead as to what to do when the time comes for high school.

I’ve never come across such a duplicitous, nasty, cowardly politician. Possibly the one that comes closest was Tony Blair, of course she did work for him as a senior policy analyst so undoubtedly picked up a few tips.

  Crap. I used public hospitals a couple of times in 2014 and 2017 for minor accidents. I got great service.
  
  Last week I burned my hand. Not bad enough to go to the ER, but I wanted it seen to. My doctor said he could do an “online appointment” only. He said he could see me next week. Otherwise I should go to the ER and wait.
  
  I then went to a ’24 hours’ place that I have used before. I figured I could wait 2 hours. They said ‘8 hours’. 🙁
  
  I gave up. Thankfully it is getting better with home treatment.
  
  There is a crisis and it has nothing to do with neoliberalism. The root cause is the same root cause that is driving pot holes in the roads.
  
  I’m seriously getting concerned. New Zealand will not survive another term of this lot.

    My wife broke her wrist in January.
    I took her to Middlemore Hospital where the wrist was x-rayed and the bone set within maybe three or four hours. It was x-rayed again and looked at by a specialist who said it was much more serious than the first doctor thought.
    A week later she was operated on and this was followed by months of physio.
    No cost. No delays. No hassles. No complaints.

  I have problems here with people who are “economic consultants” but do not appear to follow normal economic learnings. It is as though they have gone to ‘another university’ that teaches ‘an0ther economics’. They come across as knowledgeable and yet they run completely against standard economics. This puts them in the situation of influencing people who may not be of high IQ who then consider Clint and co as experts.
  
  The sooner these people leave their positions of influence in Wgtn the sooner NZ can start to get back on the right road to economic recovery.

They did this in cold blood based on dubious information based on mathematical models that were heavily criticised by concerned experts at the time. They went ahead on the basis of this concocted computer simulation. So tell me again, which part of what he said was wrong and why?
    As for taking it to the police. I saw how the police operate in NZ under Ardern’s instructions. So I’ll pass for now. I’m hoping that a future inquiry will do the right thing.

I just read Stephen Joyce’s piece on Chris Hipkin’s restructuring of the polytechs. Not pretty.

The problem was that the polytechs were losing 50 million a year.

Hipkin’s solution was to introduce 2 new layers of administration, including new offices in hamilton that house 180 workers. On top of that , he maori-fied the entire organisation.

Mr. Hipkin’s wasted 200 million dollars on restructuring, and now, the polytechs are losing 100 million a year .

This takes a special kind of incompetence, from a minister that is supposed to be semi-competent.

  The biggest cause of all NZ’s social ills is unintended consequences of ‘kind’ easily accessed highly paid welfare. It encourages low achieving lazy people to drop their standard of living slightly and try to subsist on welfare – and then indulge in, enable and effectively encourage antisocial means for enhancing their standard of living, (baby-farming, drugs dependency, crime, lower standards of care for kids). It infantilizes adults and leads to a toxic downward spiral in behaviour that if allowed to continue for another 1-2 generations will eventually destroy NZ’s 1st world status.

  I recall the climate-catastrophe true believers pointing to Germany as THE example of “renewables” power generation leadership! Now Germany is cranking up their coal plants and getting their nuclear plants back up and running! Yeah their 100s of billions down the toilet on renewables worked out real well didn’t it!!! Maybe NZ Labour could learn something from Germany’s mistakes??? Or Sri Lanka’s???
