Trevor Mallard, eh? DefendNZ makes serious allegations against the former Speaker, which had they been published at the time (see below), would have been incredibly damaging. Check out this extract:

Over the course of the day, we began to sense that even our silent presence was becoming too challenging for the pro-euthanasia MPs, and around lunchtime, we discovered just how cruel those in power can be to a dissenting presence.

Without any prior warning, a Parliamentary security guard began rudely demanding that we leave the Parliament building immediately under the urgent order of Trevor Mallard.

Remember, we had not done anything illegal, we had not done anything disruptive, and we were there as guests of a sitting MP.

None of that mattered to Trevor Mallard, who quickly appeared in person to reinforce his eviction of a small and peaceful group of disabled and terminally ill New Zealand citizens.

I watched stunned, as Trevor Mallard stood over a woman with terminal brain cancer, and berated her with a raised voice, threatening her with a trespass notice as she sat in her wheelchair, made powerless and with eyes watering.

The woman with terminal brain cancer has since passed away, but this incident was witnessed by a number of people.

So why didn’t we hear about this at the time? Read on:

In the immediate aftermath of our unjustified eviction from Parliament under threat of trespass notice by Trevor Mallard, we felt we had to alert the public to what had happened.

The forceful removal of peaceful and non-disruptive New Zealand citizens from our nation’s Parliamentary buildings was too serious an incident to stay silent about.

As we were being forcefully removed by no less than three security guards, I immediately made phone contact with journalists from 1NEWS and the NZ Herald, both of whom indicated that the Parliamentary press gallery was aware that something serious had just transpired in Parliament.

They also told me that they were keen to come down and interview us, but they would just need to clear it with their editors first.

An hour later, after hearing nothing further from either journalist, I contacted them for a second time. It was then that I was told that their editors had refused them permission to report on the incident.

I was dumbfounded, as I can’t ever recall any other incident involving peaceful advocates, who were at Parliament by invitation, having been then threatened with trespass notices and evicted by the Speaker of the House.

To say that this wasn’t something even mildly newsworthy beggars all belief.

At that stage, we chose not to take the issue any further because we didn’t want to create a sideshow, nor undermine our profoundly important advocacy work for vulnerable New Zealanders.

Don’t forget, the EOLC Bill was still alive in Parliament at that stage, and we did not want to take any course of action that would jeopardise the possibility of a good outcome for those Kiwis the Bill would harm if it became law.

Draw your own conclusions, but it is not implausible that the Speaker’s Office contacted media outlets, and suggested that there was no merit in reporting on this. Let’s not forget Mallard’s leaking of a supposed insult directed at the PM that he was apparently the only person in the entire House to hear, despite confessing to deafness in one ear. On that occasion, a couple of media outlets were selectively told the story, and did their best to implicate National MP’s. There was also the issue of media coverage of the Wellington occupation, where media were given access to a balcony accessible only through the Speaker’s apartment or office.

Had these allegations been made when Mallard was Speaker, there would have been widespread calls for Mallard to be stood down whilst an inquiry was conducted. But in some ways the allegations emerging now is an even more serious story, and begs the question; what else has Mallard hushed up?

Trevor Mallard will get his taxpayer-funded sinecure in Ireland, but it would be a travesty if he was knighted, despite that being a convention for Speakers of the House.

    When you add the advertising of various bull shit government messages I think you will find that the 50 odd million dollars is the tip of a very large iceberg. We have a thoroughly corrupt government in power now in the process of arresting “ far right” web publishers for disseminating “ objectionable material and misinformation “. I didn’t know that publishing lies is illegal if it is than one Jacinda Ardern needs arresting immediately. I am beginning to despise the country I once loved for sitting back and allowing this to happen.

    Looking back on last week’s ‘Sharmadrama’ I am reminded that the current media have no historical perspective when it comes to reporting on the Labour party. The Ardern brand (‘kindness and compassion’) has blinded them to the reality; that the Labour Party has been, and still is, the political wing of the Union movement. Bully boy behaviour is the modus operandi of the movement. That is why bullying MP’s to keep them in line is no big deal. Poor old Sharma, who as a medico has probably never belonged to a Union, would not have anticipated that within the Party the bosses rule and individuality is not tolerated.

    It is entirely consistent with a government that expresses publicly it’s intention to regulate grocery prices that a wholesaler is permitted to charge and ignore massive profits made by partly government-owned power suppliers.
    Grey people making regulations that rule the lives of the population.
    It’s not too late to have Mallard retired in shame. Unfortunately he will retire a wealthy man courtesy of the taxpayer which has fed and watered him for the last 20 or more years.

  It’s not too late, hold an inquiry into this incident and cancel all his travel arrangements until the findings of the inquiry determine his worthiness to represent our country on the world stage.

    There was no vote of no confidence in Mallard. National tried on numerous occasions to have a Motion of No Confidence debated, but Labour MP’s always objected to leave being granted, and there the matter rested.

  The treatment of these visitors is one thing, and bears investigation. This is not the most disturbing part of the story however.
  
  I feel that the media is far too much in lockstep with the government.
  
  It seems that the new progressives of the world have insinuated themselves into the MSM. We are now in the position that the Perigos, Plunketts, Hawkesbys and Hoskings of the world are becoming more and more Persona Non Grata in the media scape, and that the MSM now seems to be part of the government messaging system, and less about holding them to account, especially when dealing with a center left or left government.
  
  Andrea Vance’s revelations of Political Editors holding weekly conference calls with the PM’s Office to lay out the messaging for the week should be raising alarms, and the payment of millions to the same organisations creates the impression of Government seeking to control the very media who is tasked with holding them to account.
  
  Stories like the one above only serve to reinforce that impression.

  Does NZ actually already own an Embassy in Dublin (or Belfast?) (The Mallard appointment does not make it clear whether he is the ambassador for Eire or Ulster. Would this make any difference?) I ask as I would like to know how much it is costing the taxpayer to rid ourselves of this malignance. I would be keen for him to reside in a sewer anywhere.

  Who are these News Editors? Unlike the Parliamentary Press Gallery journalists who are the public face of their news reporting, the public have no idea who the News Editors are (whom perception wise are appearing to censor news stories depending on whether it is approved by the Labour Party).
  
  BTW a quick google search to show who the current Parliamentary Press Gallery journalists are …. has not been updated since 10 June 2016 when National were in power!
  
  Well Labour are the Govt so the buck stops with them.

  Tony, the wheel has definitely turned. I was sitting in the Air NZ lounge in Auckland last night when the PM walked in. She was accompanied by her usual security team but this time there were 3 in close attendance, not the usual 2.
  
  I watched her closely as she walked in. She did not appear to be confident or comfortable. Instead, she looked almost furtive and hid behind her mask keeping it on almost the whole time that she was in the lounge. Contrast that with every other person in the lounge who was maskless.
  
  Further, the last time that I saw the PM in an Air NZ lounge was in Wellington. The contrast between then and last night could not have been more stark. In Wellington she sat right by the entrance where she knew that every single visitor would need to pass her. There was a continuous procession of lounge members walking up to her and talking. The PM looked confident, in control and proud.
  
  Last night she would have been in the lounge for around 40mins. Aside from how she looked, only one person talked to her. She is definitely out of favour.

    There will be many with more knowledge of these matters than I possess, but I believe the reason is that it is the Office of the Speaker that is subject to the court order, rather than the Speaker as a person.
    
    For Mallard to delegate it to one of the Assistant Speakers while he was still in charge would lay bare for all the world to see what a weasel he is. But for the new Speaker to announce it the day after Mallard steps down is just a happy accident of timing – simples!

For those not privy to the electricity industry news, there has been happenings, some of which will have a effect on your power bills.. They haven’t made any decision on the big battery (aka Lake Onslow), but the alternatives put up against it either don’t exist or are prohibitively expensive. The big decision is supposed to be December. Amazingly (or probably not so as it is Labour we are talking about), they haven’t done any even provisional costings, economic analysis or even just look at how it will change the market. The effect it will have on the grid hasn’t even been acknowledged to be a potential issue. That will cost unbudgeted extra billions to fix.

In the same week, the cost of Snowy 2.0, the pumped storage scheme in Australia, has been announced as going from $2B to $10B. A lot of the work there hasn’t even started yet! They are still just in detailed design stage. That cost increase is not unusual on these type of schemes.

MinisterWoods is saying the battery will save a lot of money because they won’t have to overbuild so many of the unreliables. Rather than 5 times overbuild, it will only need 3 times overbuild. Cognative dissidence is strong in that one. One of the power generator’s CEO said the industry should be building one to four windfarms a year for the next 30 years to meet the demand. The price of the one currently being built is only 13% overbudget. But future revenue will rise, making it economically viable!! Revenue going up – so more expensive electricity. Wind certainly isn’t getting cheaper.

All this is so we can get rid of thermal plant yet have cheap and abundant green energy, to quote the Minister. That’s code for stock up on candles and get a mortgage to pay for your electricity. Because the market won’t build these stations as it’s uneconomic, if not impossible, some advocates want a reincarnated NZE to take over and run the system as a monopoly. That forced nationalisation used to be called something else, didn’t it? Maybe Kiwielectricity will be run by iwi so that will be OK For the WEF consiracists out there, the Sorus funded openDemocracy supports this strategy. https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/andrew-fisher-labour-nationalise-energy-national-grid-privatisation/

Meanwhile, in the different universe called Planet Earth, energy poverty in Europe is a massive problem – reckoned it is being going to 60% of the poulation in Germany this winter. It is even starting to affect the urban liberals who thought themselves immune from this sort of thing. As I write this, their power price is about $1.50 a kWh and that is well below the peak this week! They still want to close their last nukes in December despite already having an electricity shortage. Their governments have followed the green utopian dream and when Russia turned off the gas, their greenwashing was exposed and it has turned to shit. We will do it differently of course.   I’m trying to figure out when the best time to buy a generator will be – I’m convinced I’m going to need one.
  I don’t want to wait too long because increased demand from like-minded souls will put the cost through the roof, but I don’t want to have it sitting about doing nothing for too long either.
  It really is so frustrating that we’re at the mercy of these fools who think imposing these massive costs on us to fix a non-problem is the way to go. They apparently aren’t able to learn from the developing disasters in Europe/UK, ensuring we will go cold/broke as well.
  And simple voters with a brain in their head have a real problem because there is no real opposition to this idiocy.

    I am getting my electrician to price a generator connection and changeover switch at present. Expect it will be around $3k.
    I have a small Honda generator at present that has kept the office going before, but I will need a bigger 3 phase one to keep the whole house, bore pump and workshop running.

      They know – they have acknowledged they haven’t done it in their first part which only cost $30M. I bet they did iwi consultation for a fair chunk of that though. The next part costing another $70M is going to do it, along with other work including more consultation.
      If you go back in previous GDs, I did it before, showing it is uneconomic. They can have that for free.

  A hydro battery will work if your baseline generation is sufficient to meet gross demand, but not sufficient to meet peak.
  
  Offpeak baseline can then be used to fill the battery.
  
  Great if you have reliable nuclear power and can plan off peak storage.
  
  It will never work with unreliables because you cannot plan for recharging the battery, you cannot guarantee that the battery will always be full when you need it for peak.
  
  As a result…..
  
  Scarcity will drive up prices, the battery adds to the price, the standby reliable generation either on grid or off grid will add to the price of energy.

  This is the big smoking gun hidden by the media and government. It is the poison pill that the next government will need to deal with. Energy projects take years to complete and this government, knowing the issues (see Megan Woods inauguration speech), has done none of the work or planning to deal with it.
  
  The issue in Germany is due to poor decision making and planning but a war is an unplanned event. In NZ we have known for a decade that we needed more supply and that renewables could not be the only solution. We have done NOTHING. Building windfarms is cheap (relatively) but doesn’t address the baseload issues. Woods has known this from day one.
  
  The primary driver to successful economies / countries is energy supply. Cheap reliable energy equals competitive successful businesses. The opposite is true for failed states.

    One of the prime reasons nothing has been done is Wellington, in its broadest sense.
    
    Before I start , I am not a conspiracy theorist, but the reason for much of this government’s inaction, or screwball decision making is a combination of two things:
    
    1. Government, Green Party MPs and their close allies/advisors are working at levels way beyond their experience, qualification and experience. These people are in senior decision making & advisory roles, and these people are making decisions or implementing policies that at their best are inept or at their worst a scandalous train wreck for the country;
    2. Much of the source material for the inept decision and policy making is not the work of bureaucrats beavering away at their desks in Wellington, but is output of a number of second rate over hyped, and despite the letters behind their names, highly qualified academics at some of this country’s universities (in particular Victoria, birth place of the Green Party).
    
    The 2 factors above have resulted in information/ research opinion flowing from the universities to either government departments or political advisors, and then turning up in government decision making and policy throughout the country.
    
    Macro aspects of public policy that have been influenced in this manner include:
    1. Social and justice policy;
    2. Education;
    3. Transport
    4. Environment, including agriculture, climate change, emmissions trading, and waste management;
    5. Energy – or the lack of it.
    
    As someone who has 30 years experience of providing project finance in the transport & energy sectors in Europe, Middle East & the Pacific, I investigated opportunities in NZ, given NZ has a looming energy crisis because of bad public policy decision making. What I found was public policy based on dogma emanating from the universities, with no scope of rational debate and decision making.
    
    It is because of the above future projects are Lake Onslow, wind farms and solar farms.
    
    So, if you live in the upper North Island buy a generator and put solar panels on your roof!

      The problems actually go all the way down the chain.
      
      I do occasional third party work for one of the big power producers. Over 20yrs I have seen staff come and go so rapidly that there is almost no institutional knowledge. They have had an internal IT team, then fired them and hired them as contractors, then un contracted them and hired large multinationals to handle their IT. They have out sourced, in sourced and then out sourced over and over. Every two years all plans are put on hold by new management while they are reviewed. Staff sit and wait to see what the new plan is.
      We have had a software project that we have scoped three times since covid. Produced requirements docs (for them) and design docs. Each time we have produced SOW / quotes to them. Before go ahead occurs the managers are ‘shuffled’ and the new manager comes in. The process restarts. In ~6yrs we have billed for this time but never actually gotten authorisation to do the work. Our primary contact has been sitting on his hands for > 6mths while current new management review his role in the company. He is not allowed to start any new work and people are not allowed to deal with him. I am not sure what he actually does all day at this point or even if he still works there.
      
      We have a support contract which allows for a number of ‘free’ hours work per quarter. Almost no one there knows this and they constantly want SOW and or quotes to do things that are already covered. It is only our honesty that stops us from double billing.
      
      No wonder they cant do anything more complex then wind farms. Anything that required serious design work and implementation (i.e. a hydro dam or nuclear) would get stuck in limbo. If they even still have the organisational expertise to do this stuff anymore.

        RoboRob, I agree with you. As I said above, I have over 30 years project finance experience including advising on thermal electric power plants. Initially, it was the “dash for gas” with North Sea gas & more recently waste to energy.
        
        Because of poor planning & decision making, NZ is facing power shortages in the next 10 years. Since the Clyde High Dam, NZ has reduced its net generating capacity, while demand for electricity has grown because of a 25% increase in population and the decommissioning of 4 thermal power stations (and what do we hear – we all need to moved to EV’s powered by what, diesel generators?)
        
        Last year, because of the above and the fact the country sits on a mountain of rubbish, I looked at the potential for the development of waste to Energy generating capacity. Practically, it is easy. The problem is as I said Wellington. All the environmental policy has eminated from academics at Victoria and we’ll placed lobbyists. Their opinions (research) has then infected the olicy of the Ministry of the Environment & the Electricity Authority. Hence unless there is a change of government and a change of government policy NZ will experience a shortage of electricity in the coming decade.
        
        Not bad going, considering 40 years ago, NZ had a surplus of generating capacity.

        hullkiwi. That isn’t correct about new stations. Since Clyde, they have built about 800MW of geothermal, 1100MW of CCGT, about 600MW of OCGT and the windfarms which are very nominally rated as 1000MW. They have also put the extra Manapouri tunnel in (another 100MW) and boosted the efficiency of most hydros with new runners.
        They have also improved the availability of almost all the units by better mtce practices that effectively added 10% to the capacity.
        They decommissioned NPPS (which was down to 120MW at the end), one Huntly unit 250MW, and about 550MW of GTs . Almost all the thermal decommissioning was of thermal plant that was at the end of life and would need major work to extend the operating hours.
        Waste to energy at the Meremere site would have been brilliant, using railed in rubbish from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. Probably about 200MW base load capacity. Ash in the old coal mines in the area. Could have done centralised recycling there as well. Killed by the industrial wing of the Greens in the 90s. They used dioxin as the scare tactic. A massive act of economic and environmental sabotage that they should never be forgiven for, if ever there was just one issue to crucify them on.

  How the fuck do they pay people’s invoices out of profits if nobody pays their invoices?
  Oh, that’s right, they probably assume this Govt will be in power forever with Maori pulling their strings.

    Nick, I saw the piece on Seven Sharp too. From what I saw, I think you are mis-stating their business model. There are two parts, these are:
    1. They are earning revenue through small scale electricity generation via solar panels. This generation is then sold to customers and the grid.
    2. Electricity is sold and paid for by customers. What they are not do is charging at the retail rates of the big providers. What they are doing, they are taking part of the putting some of the profit to pay for the electricity of those clients who are unable to meet the cost of a monthly invoice because of short term circumstances.
    
    Mahuta Corp is not part of this venture.

    Yes, I’ve been seeing similar stories from the UK. These cost levels are 3 to 4 times the levels we were paying 10 years ago in Sussex.
    
    The issue in the UK has been looming for 20 years. At the heart of the issue is a firm of business advisor at the heart of government advisory and policy making in London. The firm concerned is one of the big 4 accounting firms who were conflicted with clients which are/were private sector energy providers. The strange thing is that they were advocating electricity generation using nuclear and W2E. These programmes have been on going for the past 15 years and were aimed at reducing dependency on fossil fuel generation. However, as I understand matters, there are still some power stations still relying on natural gas for generation. The gas previously was coming from the North Sea, however, over time they may have moved (& maintained) supply with reliance on Russian piped gas.

They are low-density energy sources that cannot possibly supply the energy needs of a first world country. They are also intermittent and unreliable. When the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow you will have no power.

    The articles are good for alot of people as they let us know who to vote for. I’ve never voted in a local body election but I will be this year now that stuff has shown me the candidates. Only a VFF candidate will get my vote. NZ is so divided now that stuff is actually doing these candidates a favor. All publicity is good publicity.
    Also I feel that alot of commentators on here underestimate the general public. Gone are the days of a morning paper and the 6pm news being our main sources of news and alot of people have woken up to how full of crap they are. A few of our media organizations can’t survive without government handouts. They publish crap, no one reads it, advertisers run; their business model is a failure, they’ve done themselves in and ruined themselves financially and without government funding they would all he down at winz.

    Have a look at page 8 of attached link to our local paper Franklin County News where Arena Williams (Labour MP) and Stuart Smith (National MP) are asked their opinion on this statement: Democracy is derailed when those standing for election hide information or outright lie to win votes. Now we have an anti-vax group with an agenda to make the country ‘‘ungovernable’’standing candidates in local body elections and telling them to hide their affiliations. Is it time to follow California’s lead with a law allowing voters to ‘recall’ an elected official if there is widespread concern about their performance. An MP from each side of the House gives their views.
    
    Basically Labour don’t support democracy/free speech and National do.

        Correct MCos, there are many foreign volunteers from even NATO countries and NZ.
        I know one over there, former SAS, and good on him. Just a shame if he gets taken out by a missile strike on a barracks before he gets to use his specialist skill set (sniper).
        This is much like NZers went to the Spanish Civil war, and fought on the side of the ‘goodies’ i.e. leftists which included Stalinists and Anarchists.
        Goodies and Baddies is not really a thing in reality, but you can consider that some aggressors are worse than others, or their actions have implications great than even the local conflict.
        For Russia to be a pariah for resorting to force and invasion (again) – regardless of the corruption issues in the Ukraine or rights & wrong over the border regions – is a good thing.
        And for people to go there to fight against it too.
        Because I think we need to consider whether China might go for Taiwan next, or in future years why not to ‘liberate’ countries where they have bought strategic assets, or who defaulted on Belt and Road or other such valid premises?
        Putin and Russian organised crime are so tightly connected that even just giving Putin the poisoner and thug a black eye seems a good principle too!

    I recorded in July that 6956 mercenaries arrived in Ukraine and were fighting: 1956 were repairing equipment and that 1779 had come and gone. I did not record the number instructing. The UK, Netherlands and Poles were the keenest. Poles 1831 of whom 378 had died and 272 returned to Poland. UK 422 had arrived. These figures would be out of date as governments have been clear that such volunteers are fighting outside the protections offered by the Geneva Convention and are dissuading their men from volunteering. However if NZ army blokes are reading General Discussion in Kiwiblog they may think they are on the side of the angels and be prepared to offer themselves in this brothers’ war as a meaningless sacrifice.

The Water Services Entities Bill will establish four publicly owned water services entities intended to provide safe, reliable, and efficient water services.

This Bill is intended to begin the process of ensuring that everyone in New Zealand has access to safe drinking water, by setting out the arrangements around ownership, governance, and accountability of four new water services entities.

The Water Services Entities Bill was introduced on 2 June 2022, and had its first reading on 9 June 2022. It was referred to the Finance and Expenditure Committee. Members of the general public, organisations, iwi, and local government representatives are all encouraged to make a submission on this legislation.

The committee has appointed two subcommittees to hold hearings [15 – 17 August]

Then there’s Three Waters, the Government’s plan to amalgamate local water assets into four public entities, which will be represented by regional representative groups consisting of 50 percent local council members and 50 percent iwi.

    Sadly, the “template’ for success begins with high levels of achievement at school, supported by functional parents, preferably a married mother and father in a functional, caring relationship.
    
    How many Maori children today attend an excellent school AND get support from functional, intelligent and caring parents? Of course we do not know. But think I could put a case for “not many”.
    
    Of course Jacinda would refude me. She would tell me that all schools are excellent schools. She would also tell me that any shortcomings in Maori parents are a result of insufficient te reo usage and colonisation. The Government will address both those problems, and everything will be well.
    
    Sadly, I think that history will show that Jacinda is dead wrong. If the nation follows her path, all of the social and economic indicators for Maori children and adults will worsen over the next decade. That worsening will be accompanied by bitter social and racial division, with civil war a distinct possibility within 20 years.

They will use financial incentives to influence some tribal leaders who will use their Co-Governance influence to block NZ Government decisions that run contrary to CCP ideology.       ACC has faults, but other oldies may remember the days when courts were log-jammed with cases sorting out monetary liability for injuries. Perhaps it has been a good idea but ultimately unsustainable.

  Unusually, I have some sympathy with Little on this occasion. It is not appropriate for a public servant to lobby MPs to support a private member’s Bill from the Green Party.
  
  As for the Bill itself, it is sponsored by Chloe Swarbrick who seems obsessed about alcohol harm but is happy to promote cannabis. Yes alcohol does cause harm. But reducing outlets and shop hours will just inconvenience folk who leave work at 7pm and want to buy a bottle of wine to have with dinner. (Opps Chloe closed the wine shop at 5pm).
  
  You could restrict alcohol sales to between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday only. Those addicted to alcohol would be lined up at 2pm and they would buy all they needed for the next week.

  The guy is a fool. How will ‘free’ public transport help the ‘cost of living crisis’? All it does is shift the costs between different groups.
  
  A couple of months back, I posted some good research from places that had introduced ‘free’ public transport. The major shift that resulted was people who previously walked or cycled because they could not afford the fares. People in cars did not shift in high numbers. (Which is intuitively correct. I would not use PT in Christchurch if it was free because I can drive anywhere I need to go in a fraction of the time compared to PT, and parking is either free or cheap.)

Raising Maori 17 percent population portion to 50 percent voting rights is a multiplication of 3.
Lowering non-Maori 83 percent to 50 percent os a multiplication of about 0.6.
0.6 compared to 3 is about 5
So one Maori vote becomes 5 times the value of one non-Maori vote.
Is there a maths mistake in this?

And the kindergarten sand-pit argument for this is that “We were here first’
Not that we were indigenous – which is another sand-pit argument – since out entire history is based on seven immigrant canoes and the Great Migration, which makes us First Nation people, or First Seven Tribes.
And the tyranny of the majority seems not ro come into it Treaty-wise since at the time Maori were about 94 percent of the population compered to non-Maori six.

There is quite a bit to the nation-wide “conversation” – which of course has not yet occurred, but the legislation meanwhile is happening

The Speaker of the House has apologised for issuing a trespass notice to former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters.

The apology was issued by the Speaker of the House of Representatives; Adrian Rurawhe was elected Speaker yesterday but the original matter involved his predecessor Trevor Mallard.

The apology has been shared the day after Mallard resigned to take up a diplomatic posting in Ireland.

“The Speaker of the House of Representatives has apologised for a trespass notice issued to former Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Winston Peters. The Speaker has also retracted and apologised for comments which related to Mr Peters in a 4 May press release,” the apology said.

“The Speaker has admitted to the High Court at Wellington that the exercise of power under section 26(2) of the Parliamentary Service Act 2000 to issue Mr Peters a warning under section 4 of the Trespass Act 1980 was unreasonable and irrational.

“He has further admitted to the High Court that issuing the warning was an unjustified limitation on Mr Peters’ right to freedom of movement under section 18 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, and that Mr Peters had not acted in any way which justified him being issued with the warning.”

Initially, RNZ reported that Trevor Mallard had apologised, persumably on his way out the door of the Speaker’s Office. However they had to issue a clarification, which appears at the foot of the story:

Clarification: This story initially stated the apology was issued by Trevor Mallard. This was incorrect and has been amended.

Should we be surprised that Trevor Mallard left the apology to his successor? Let’s not forget that this was the man who left the taxpayer to clean up another legal mess, when he falsely accused as parliamentary staffer of being a rapist. Mallard subsequently stated that he realised his mistake within 24 hours of making the comment, but did nothing to withdraw it, and was sued.

This time it was his long-time adversary Winston Peters doing the suing. And Trevor Mallard showed his lack of class right to the very end, passing the buck to his successor, Rt Hon Adrian Rurawhe.

Little wonder that the former Speaker of the House is one of the most despised figures in New Zealand politics.

  Trevor Mallard has left as the Speaker of the House, and will soon be leaving the country altogether. It’s not as if he has to stick around and take any flak from Winston, or answer any calls from the media asking him any awkward questions.

Like all thugs and bullies, Mallard is a coward. He gutlessly left it to the new speaker to apologise to Winston Peters for the ‘irrational’ actions of Mallard himself. When Sharma calmly called him out for ratting on him to the whips, he yelled out ‘liar’ (which the new speaker conveniently didn’t hear – is he deaf too?) and was then heard raging and swearing about it to Labour ministers and others.
Such a diplomat. Off he’ll go with his knighthood, his hefty perks and another cushy job.
Jacinda Ardern should be ashamed of herself.

Libertarians are right

A redacted version of the affidavit used to get the warrant against Trump will be released by the end of the month.

It looks like it needs to prove more than just the fact that Trump held Presidential Records.

The Presidential Records Act states that:
(3) the Presidential records of a former President shall be available to such former President or the former President’s designated representative.

It does not define any restrictions whatsoever on what that availability means, no timeframe or locations etc at all. His retention of those documents (including classified ones) seems to be legal and his fight with the Archivist seems to be akin to an overdue library book where the term of the borrowing wasn’t actually stated.

There is no definition of illegal holding of records by the President in the PRA.

Therefore, Trump simply holding those records was not justification for the warrant. They would need to have proven a reasonable fear that he was going to destroy those specific documents, pass on classified materials or that he held non-Presidential, Agency documents. Everything else seems to be an administrational issue, not a legal one.

  The significant charge in the Trump search warrant is the Espionage Act. Gathering, transmitting or losing national defence information. Simple charge. Simple to prove. You either have such documents or you don’t. And the search inventory suggests he did have such documents.
  
  I suspect we won’t learn much from the redacted affidavit, because I expect the redactions will be extensive.

    Under the PRA, Trump has a right to the “Gathering” part. It is explicitly legal in the Act and the Espionage Act doesn’t explicitly override the PRA. His holding that info is not illegal.
    Therefore, they have to prove a reasonable expectation of the transmitting or losing that information.
    
    The PRA is really badly written, literally the only paragraph in it pertaining to the former President’s rights is what I wrote above. There are no restrictions or requirements defined in the Act.
    
    Gathering will still work if he’s got Agency owned info though, just not President info.
    
    So, not as simple as you claim. Simply knowing that he had files is not enough.
    
    And yes, the redacted affidavit will be a joke.
    
    Also, I don’t like Trump but he has a right to be a sleazy dickhead.

I consider myself a supporter for the ‘Fire Service’, and the need for increased government support.
However, they may have been doing themselves a disservice this morning.
Heading north from Lower Hutt, there is a significant roundabout – always busy, which requires utmost attention from a drivers perspective. (Corner of High Street and Fairway Drive)
There must have been 30-40 firemen congregating about the round about (with some actually on it), brandishing billboards, and statements regarding their current plight.
Two things :
-I could not read any of their placards, nor focus on any individual at all.

FBI approached Facebook and told them to censor Hunter Bidens laptop story because it was “ Russian misinformation “ designed to interfere with the election. At the time the FBI had in their possession the laptop and knew it was real. Source Mark Zuckerberg. So all of you types that have ridiculed those who have called the 20 /20 election as interfered with enjoy eating your hats because this is just the beginning of an avalanche of information that rats fleeing the sinking ship will reveal.

Well this is strange, 3 months after the death of a support worker who had only recently joined them they have decided they need a 3 week closure to deal with it.

This is a charity set up to support people, closing for 3 weeks. Bizarre.

Worth dropping if not able to update it (would have been hard to know the national total anyway).
