Wow; this is going to be incredibly damaging to an already wounded government:

A blunder by a government worker sent Northland into an 11-day lockdown after travel documents that were meant to be declined were mistakenly approved.

The case of three women who travelled from Auckland to Northland hit headlines in October 2021 in the midst of a Delta outbreak – but new documents released under the Official Information Act finally outline the truth behind the saga, and the reason Northland was put into lockdown.

The OIA papers show the women – who had earlier been blamed for using “false information” to get travel permits – had no links to gangs and weren’t sex workers, as had been suggested.
Among the documents released is a summary of a police investigation into the women which found “no offence” and no “deception” in obtaining the travel documents.

Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor’s summary of “Operation Hiking” quoted an email from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment which said the travel documents were “issued in error by the Ministry of Social Development, (the error not being the fault of the applicant)”.

Another document showed it was known three days before the 11-day lockdown was announced on October 8 that human error was behind the travel documents being granted to the women.

One Northland mayor has branded the case “incompetence by the bureaucracy” while another says it would have been “tipping point” for some businesses struggling under Covid-19 lockdowns.

The women were publicly vilified for crossing the border with then Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins accusing them of using “false information to travel across the border”.

The case also saw reporters quizzing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern over whether the women were prostitutes and former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters was forced to apologise for falsely claiming the pair were helped by Hawke’s Bay-based Mongrel Mob leader Harry Tam.

The police inquiry summary said: “The police investigation found no evidence to suggest that (the women) had any connection to Harry Tam, the Mongrel Mob or were involved in prostitution.”

There’s an old political saying that if the scandal doesn’t get you, the cover-up will. The way this information has made it to the public domain is an indictment on the Ardern government, and the good folk of Northland have every reason to be absolutely incandescent with anger over this blunder, which had widespread negative consequences. And the lockdown was completely avoidable, with the error known about THREE DAYS before the lockdown was ordered!

But will they, or we, get an apology from Ardern, Hipkins, Sepuloni and co? Don’t hold your breath!

  If the people of Northland expect an apology for this shambles they will be waiting for a long time. Hipkins will disappear into witless protection and the PM will refude things.
  Speaking of home I understand she will be busy with a round of important engagements at central Auckland primary schools this afternoon. Possibly scoping out schooling options for the child when she leaves Thorndon.

    She is off for a job interview at the end of this week in New York, so she will only blame somebody else, and little chippy is tha fall guy and will do anything to please her.
    He will obfuscate on this like the results of the Education Reading, Writing and Arithmatic new NCEA are equally an incredible disaster, but not unexpected.

        Paulus, Air NZ is a publicity thing, you know, cameras cameras cameras. I am sure Air Force One will be there so she can go see flaky socialists in NY, Then Cali, then NY, then home. Now depending on what type of shit is hitting the fan, she may have a few days in Hawaii. There is a large airfield there, so park Air Force One around the back somewhere.
        One thing for sure, she does not want to answer any questions at the moment.

    Brian – you obviously don’t do rational analysis.
    
    Our death rates were low because we’re an island thousands of kms from the nearest land mass. We hid under the bed and managed to avoid a respiratory illness for a couple of years. Living in fear doesn’t fix anything. The majority of the population finished up mentally and physically weaker as a result.
    The increase in excess death is happening, it began a few months ago and is accelerating. It follows the same curve as the vaccine and booster rollout and follows the equivalent timelines in Europe and America. It is going to get worse. We were six months behind most other countries due to our enormous “success” in “eliminating” covid.
    Remind us all again how that worked out?
    
    You, like Wayne Mapp, will vanish from the scene never to be heard from again when the inevitable inquiry happens and the real world data proves that correlation has a direct connection to causation. That the actions taken by this government and the cowards who supported them destroyed businesses, lives and relationships. Severely damaged the education and mental health of our young. Severely damaged our health system. Severely damaged our tourism industry. Their actions will take a decade or more to recover from. For many people their lives have been irrevocably destroyed.
    This Ardern’s legacy. Those who not only supported her, but actively screamed for more and harder devastation to be put upon those daring to speak out against her, you will have that to live with. Though if as is likely you have no conscience, you’ll probably be just fine.

        Actually I am sure. The MOH has been quite careful to sort out those where covid has been a contributing cause of death and those who died for other reasons but who also had covid. It is the reason why the MOH figures are lower than the figures on the World 0 Meter, which lists 2791 covid deaths.
        
        I would also note for the usual skeptics on this site that the death rate from covid from the initial and the delta strain were much higher than the current death rate, in fact up to 3%. At that stage the fatality rate was around ten times higher than seasonal flu.
        
        Of course I know I won’t convince the covid skeptics here, and the post is not really aimed at them.
        
        Initially there was a balance of contributions on covid, but Kiwiblog has become the principal mainstream site for covid deniers, and has been fundamentally taken over by them. Most of us in the opposite camp just ignore the covid posts made by the usual suspects. But when someone says covid is just like the common cold, well I wasn’t going to let that go unanswered.

        The key thing to monitor right now is all cause mortality over the last few years and to compare them with historical records.
        There are alarming increases in excess deaths right now around the world and including NZ that cannot be attributed to covid. They can and are being attributed to the policies implemented by the relevant governments.
        
        THE shills for the pharmaceutical industry deny that sudden deaths in the fully vaccinated add up to any more than a collection of unconnected tragedies. That many of the fallen are young, fit, and healthy is insufficient in evidential force to bend their collective mind towards the possibility that there could be a causal connection between the death and the jab. To the extent that they are prepared to sieve the evidence, they are sceptical that the vaccination might be the common factor which explains the ‘unexplained’ fatal injuries.
        
        The virus of cognitive dissonance has spread Omicron-like through the community of vaccine cultists.
        
        This describes Wayne Mapp and the rest in NZ who refuse to wake up to the disaster inflicted on all of us by Ardern.

No doubt you were hiding under the bed when it was a lower fatality rate but now you are immunized you’re full noise.         If you look at the table there are two figures:
        
        COVID-attributed total: 1933
        
        Total: 2861 (which was the older definition and even just above the table its says this: *The Ministry of Health has recently switched its definition of ‘deceased’ from deaths within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 to deaths attributed to COVID-19.)
        
        So Wayne Mapp is accurate in his claim of nearly 2,000 deaths. (of which 97% have occurred in the past 7 months)

      Wayne Mapp – no it hasn’t. You are wrong. There is more than enough real world evidence from around the world that clearly shows those figures are garbage.
      Though interestingly, those “deaths” you refer to have all happened since the “safe and effective” vaccines were rolled out. Before that we only had 27 “covid deaths”. What a coincidence.
      
      Get ready to have your world view torn apart Wayne. The jabs and the lockdowns have caused far more deaths than the seasonal respiratory illness called “covid” ever possibly could have. This fact will be indisputable in a relatively short period of time.
      Come back after that and attempt to justify the shredding of our freedoms, our businesses and our lives. They policies used made everything far worse than it could have managed left alone.

      Wayne. There are 2 certainties in life. Death and Taxes. The fact is, people die. We all have to die of something. We now have a vaccine, we know that masks help.
      
      We also now know that there are risks with the vaccine. (Being fully aware, I still have the shot, like the flu jab.)
      
      We now have the tools to manage this, but we simply can’t run and hide from disease anymore, now that we have the tools and the treatments. The economic costs outweigh the benefits, and reduce our capability to fund the measures we need to manage the outbreak in it’s current form.

      The people that died with covid were old and ill.
      
      The people dying now are young and fit.
      
      What would have happened if we had done nothing? No lockdown. No testing. Nothing would have happened. We would not have noticed a thing. The scare was entirely political. Like climate change. It would at worst have been a bad flu season.
      
      Our economy would be strong, the government would not be in debt, businesses would have survived, so too with marriages, and inflation would not be a problem.
      
      What would have happened if we hadn’t have had a mass “vaccine” rollout? People would be alive who are dead. People would be well who are now sick. People would still have their jobs and their homes.
      
      We would not be a divided society arguing over the wisdom and benefit of taking a government-mandated jab.
      
      There was nothing especially different about covid than evey other respiratory virus other than that it was made in a chinese lab with US government money!

        Rodney, that’s wrong. The UK had a 107% increase in mortality at the beginning of the pandemic, 65% increase in those 15-64.
        
        I’m sure that was noticed.
        
        That’s just deaths, not taking into account the magnitude more that were hospitalised and those that continue to suffer with long covid.

        You should also for completeness do your increase for the year – – not weeks!
        
        The life expectancy in England and Wales in 2020 was 80.4 – down from 81.8 in 2019. That was because the deaths were overwhelmingly the old and the sick.

Are we supposed to believe that people are catching covid, getting so sick it kills them but not spending any time in ICU? 3 in ICU currently I believe.         Brian – ICU’s are always under pressure – there are just not enough staffed ICU beds – ever. Every winter lots of elective surgery gets cancelled because there are not enough staffed ward beds. Nothing has changed except we stopped the hospitals from doing their normal daily work.

        Same with my ex wife’s sister. Battled throat cancer for years. About 60 she was. In a bed in a resthome, being fed with a tube. She caught Covid and died. It was listed as a Covid death, when really she succumbed to the cancer.

      When I had I covid I was so sick that I didn’t manage to win my golf match untill the last hole.
      
      And guess what, I didn’t even pass it on to anyone in the group.
      
      Yet because of moronic decision making by terrified politicians – people like you that think they are better and know better than others, people sit at home terrified and think a piece of paper sitting loosely on their face is going to save them.

        Yes, I have had covid, and so have about 60% of the people I know.
        
        Of the 10 closest, only one had symptoms no worse than a cold, she was over 80. Four were under 40. Two (over 70) were sufficiently serious they needed the antivirals. Two of those under 40 took 3 weeks to recover, and were in bed for more than 7 days. The rest (5) were similar to the flu.
        
        The wider group had experiences on a similar ratio.
        
        So I would put you in the 1 in 10 who had few symptoms. That is not the norm, as you will actually know.

        Wayne Mapp it’s funny that your friends were so I’ll I’ll with covid. In my family most of us are unvaxxed and for those that have had it, covid was At the level of a cold. Most of us had no cold symptoms but a sore throat. So that’s 6 of us. My parents are yet to have it (unvaxxed) despite their best efforts. My vaccinated brother had it too – he said worse than a cold but nowhere near a flu.

  Those two statements from the article don’t read well for Chippie at all. A fulsome and unreserved apology from Mr Hipkins is required
  
  But more than that this exposes that our standing bureaucracy is just not very good. The competence inside government agencies is sliding and sliding – and worse in Wellington they premium dollars for incompetence. (Queue MikenMild to rally to the defense of our poor beleaguered Public Servants caused anxiety by some criticism)
  
  Take note National and ACT – a clean out of the PSC and Senior Public Servants down to National Manager is required to refocus on the standard functions of standing agencies – and the Friday afternoon waiata practice is not core!
  
  Question: How many senior Public Servants at the CE and DCE level travel from Wellington to their private homes in other provinces every week on the tax payers coin, how frequently does it happen and what is the cost per Public Servant and the aggregate amount??? Maybe the Minister for the Public Service deserves an OIA on this question …..

    Chances of an apology from Hipkins JBJ? Somewhere between none and zero. He has doubled down this morning:
    
    Asked whether he would apologise to the women who travelled into Northland and faced public backlash, Hipkins said he didn’t want to get into “all the ins and outs” of the situation, saying decisions were made on the information available and acknowledged much of that information was not completely confirmed.
    
    However, he said the decision to send Northland into lockdown was the right one.
    
    Hipkins said he was made aware of the error at some point during the investigation, but reiterated it had been made public at the time.

    If the number of people talking about moving to Australia is a worry then (if this team is indicative) the number of pupils that can see little sense in school is a tidal wave.
    Also pupils are now older while still at school but little thought seems to have been given to non-academic advancement.
    Pupils with learning difficulties, with elements of dyslexia, still seem to be poorly catered for at many schools.

Went out for dinner last night and stoked to see 8 out of 10 staff not wearing masks, with only one wearing and a chin masker.

I still despair at the idiots coming in wearing them and sitting down and taking them off. You look ridiculous at this point.

      Brian McDonald – of course cases are declining. That’s how every seasonal respiratory has worked since the beginning of time. We know this. We knew this in late 2019/early 2020. The point is, what the Ardern government did had zero bearing on case numbers. In fact it is likely that the vaccination programme made the case numbers worse. The vaccines prevent neither infection or transmission. They also appear to damage your innate immune system. This means you are more likely to actually catch covid after your small amount of “vaccine” efficacy has waned, which happens very rapidly, hence the need for repeated boosters every 4-6 months.
      Not only have you increased your risk of catching covid, it is now looking increasingly certain that the vaccines are injuring and killing people in unprecedented numbers.
      So yes, the government is responding to declining cases. In the meanwhile, they have indebted the youth of the country for decades, destroyed lives and businesses, destroyed the education and mental well being of many of our young, shredded the fabric of society and basically devastated NZ for the foreseeable future.

    It works both ways. For example, everyone knows what a “marae” is. There is no good English translation, and none is required.
    
    My point is that there is equally no sensible Maori translation for “Christchurch Cathedral Square” and it is not necessary.
    
    Another crazy example was providing a Maori name for the “Transmission Gully Motorway” in Wellington. “Te Ara Nui o Te Rangihaeata”. It will simply never be used so what is the point? The purpose of language is to communicate.
    
    There are some successful examples of institutions with exclusively Maori names that have been successfully adopted. “Te Papa” in Wellington is a good example.

Most of the food we produce (for fewer greenhouse gas emissions than other countries) is EXPORTED – approx 95% of dairy, almost 90% of beef and 95% of sheep meat.

A fact totally overlooked by the Greens.
Bet they refuse to spend overseas currencies to show their determination to prevent them being produced from this source.

      Given the variety of NZ apples available and how freshly picked they are – I assume you bought them in NZ – that’s a rather non-specific claim. Some apples are mediocre, others might be wonderful off the tree – Braeburn – but they don’t seem to keep so well.
      
      For some months I’ve been eating two NZ apples a day and really enjoying them: Pacific Rose, a bit variable, from ok to very good; Pink Lady, great; NZ Queen, excellent; Dazzle, wonderful; Rouge, very good.

I do not waste my time trying to defend the actions and outcomes of the government. But ranting on about the failures does nothing to move us forward. I suppose it could assist the change of government process but there is a frying pan/fure problem …

Anyway – what I want to know is where team red or team blue want to take us. I would like to see a prioritised list of the problems and measures proposed to deal with them.

Tax cuts sound like a good idea except that we face costs for (eg) fixing the highly stressed health system, creep in the cost of super, housing issues… it’s quite a long list.

Spending cuts sound like a good idea, but I would like to know where they would impact and what sort of $$$ would be saved.

We need to look forward, not obsess about looking back. Numbers would be good ….

  With respect, both “teams” told us where they wanted to take us prior to the last two elections. Many, many people believed what Jacinda said, agreed with Labour Party policies, believed their promises- and voted for them accordingly.

    Fair enough. I thought it would be good to get some idea of their vision looking forward. If that is less tax, government getting out of people’s lives and all that then so be it. Just say so and be specific about which bits will be got out of and how much tax saving that might generate.

        They most certainly will. There is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes at the moment in terms of policy development. The majority of it won’t see the light of day until 2023 however. One of the reasons for that is the speed at which the economy is changing; that has implications on the costing of policy.

      They both believed in command economies. To me Muldoon has more in coming with the current Labour government than he does with any other subsequent government (left or right).
      
      I’m not specifically talking about saving money, I am taklking about imporving NZ doesn’t have to mean spending more money. A few examples (from recent stories off the top of my head)
      
      1) Rollback labours ‘State homes for life ‘ policy. This has people who no longer need state homes taking up a spot someone else needs. Ironically this would save money too.
      
      2) Re institute hospital targets and goals (waiting list times and ER processing times)
      
      3) Stop the government having direct influence in the police, farmac and researve bank. There has been too much direct government instruction (for the worse).
      
      4) Remove government controls for businesses wanting to hire from overseas.
      
      5) Remove green vehicle subsidies / tarrifs. Replace with goal of minimising stop / start traffic.
      
      6) Revert landlord laws to what was in place prior to Labour

The incompetence of this government is not in doubt. But we also need to worry about the competence of the police.
The Herald reports the police used every high and low tech tracking methods they possess and brought in the ‘most experienced organised crime detectives in the country’ to assist.
These women were not hiding. They were lawfully in Northland. They weren’t delivering drugs or sex work as part of a secret gang network.
Yet the cops couldn’t find them!

Is there anything going right in this country under this useless and dishonest government?

It’s thought they may have been used at some point for teaching.

So first off, a teacher thought it would be a good idea to have some students say a prayer over the bones before they were moved. As an adult, why did this teacher think it was appropriate to put such a responsibility onto teenagers instead of doing it him or herself or asking another adult?

The girls felt uncomfortable with this (who wouldn’t) so told their family. Their father is quoted as being angry, feeling his children were put at risk, the Treaty was not upheld, etc. Again, as an adult, shouldn’t he be the one calming and reassuring his daughter and her cousin?

It is admitted in the article that the school, when informed of the problem, was responsive. And it has not yet been established that they are actually human bones.

Why is there this constant need to make mountains instead of calmly dealing with small hills?

      They have a gas line from Siberia but seems to be limited to northern China until they build more lines. Currently most of their gas doesn’t come from Russia and Covid lockdowns have reduced demand so they are probably selling supplies to take advantage of high prices. They are building more pipelines from Russia but that will take some years.

  I know that UK has plenty of gas in the North Sea, because of ‘net zero’ they are leaving it in the ground. At the same time they are buying imported LNG from the West Coast of Aus.

UN Transport document. This could explain a few things. Auckland potholes have gone next level. Says Potholes are good for road safety as it slows traffic down.

Could someone please explain the rules concerning your blog entry being coloured red or yellow?

I can’t make any sense out of it.

Entries with 20 upticks seems to get a yellow background, a bunch of downticks get a red background but then I see a comment with 25 uptick and 3 downtick with a red background and another comment with only 10 upticks and 3 downticks having no coloured background.

Tried reading about this in the “ABOUT” field but no luck.

  It’s just automatic, once a comment reaches a certain number of likes it goes yellow, and one that is downvoted a certain amount of times goes red. It’s just part of the software David uses on this site, nothing anyone does to posts except through votes.
