Coronavirus: Jacinda Ardern announces end to traffic light system Covid-19 restrictions.
Let’s be honest with ourselves no mater how this Government want to dress this up they can’t and won’t get away with this is ” us taking control “, as this is just done for the vote and the support of the population nothing more and nothing less.
After the pain the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has put the Country through and her catch phrases like the team of 5 million over the last two and a bit years it is her that has lost control and will stop at nothing to sway the voter back to her side with lies and deciet to achieve this support.

  Here is a link to a preprint on a risk-benefit analysis that highlights the damage boosters are likely to cause in young people. They estimate that 22,000 – 30,000 previously uninfected adults aged 18-29 must be boosted with an mRNA vaccine to prevent one COVID-19 hospitalisation and which will result in 18-98 serious adverse events, including 1.7-3.0 myocarditis cases in males, and 1,373 to 3,234 cases of grade ≥3 reactogenicity which interferes with daily activities. This is in a group with close to zero risk from covid!

I was so interested that yesterday, here on kiwiblog, DPF announced today is freedom day. We are now free of covid restrictions. The government has given us our freedom back!

Secular governments now believe they control all of our lives and freedom is something they can bestow on their subjects. In the not so distant past our rights were bestowed on us by our creator that stood above governments and to whom everyone was accountable.

Now we have an out of control government that knows it can lock us down in an “emergency”. They know they can control the media and hence public opinion.

I am concerned but not because of covid. I worry about the growth of government and the lack of a limiting principle. Beholden to nothing and nobody they really believe they are masters of the universe.

  From your reference to “our creator, that stood above governments and to whom everyone was accountable” I am taking it that you want God to take the job, but I’m very far from being convinced that he’s demonstrated the right credentials.
  
  Or did you mean the monarchy – a King with real political authority to override decisions of Parliament? Would that be on his own whim, or subject to any constraints – in which case, what constraints and how monitored and enforced?
  
  Thing is, it’s a lot easier to point out the failings of Parliamentary democracy than it is to design and implement a better alternative.

    Yes Sacha we did good. Quite a few friends lost on the way I’m afraid , though I’m not sure I’m not glad about that as they weren’t people who were coerced into compliance but those clapping it that I ditched. I was amazed and concerned as to how many people were happy to “other” their neighbours and how few politicians prepared to stand up for us.

  The Gulag is alive and well in New Zealand. Last night about 8 pm I was phoned and asked whether I knew we were overdue for the third booster. Woops, I was supposed to register that we had had covid in July. In her words we due for our booster now. My explanation was that I had noted a date in October for this. She accepted that and said that she would noet it on our file. Big brother or sister is watching.

  can’t help but agree with you. Wasn’t Jacinda right in the first place to take freedoms away. After all we are not a dictatorship…. not yet anyway.
  She merely imposed restrictions with her numpties enforcing them. I affectionally called the Covid-Police. Yes the NZ police f0rce, dob-in-ya-neighbours hotline they setup for your neighbour to be the local on the ground covid-police. Mandates which pretty forced the hand of businesses in NZ to enforce them and then by default cop abuse. Overzealous use of border restrictions – both internationally and our regional borders.
  This woman will go down in NZ history as the most divisive and nasty politician ever. Along with smug Chippie and equally smug Robber-Robbo.
  Remember Jacinda – you said no one in NZ will be penalised for not taking the jab. Seems that was your biggest lie ever and you did it with a smile on your face. Makes me wonder how you sleep at night.

  China has a very long-term plan for Taiwan, one that exceeds Xi. It is not a war China would win, as multiple nations led by the USA would confront China as taking Taiwan would upturn the regional power balance. Japan, USA, UK, European allies, Australia, the Commonwealth would all rally to Taiwan which has established independence, as NZ and Australia have done et al. yet live happy indepnedent lives with ‘mother country.’

    What business is it of the UK, EU and “the Commonwealth”? I can see that the USA would feel the need to interfere (though they say that they support the One China Policy which the UN also supports). It is obvious that the regional power is China and it is obviously China whose trade NZ and Australia needs. I’ve not noticed the USA welcoming NZ trade.

  The wheels are coming off China’s economy:
  -Real Estate (a huge section of their economy, and majority of investment/savings, and major part of tax base) collapsing.
  -Population dropping (and has been lied about for decades, US based Chinese demographics researcher Yi Fuxian puts it closer to 1.25 billion than 1.4), working age population dropping, child births critically low, 10% excess young men, -Unemployment growing, western consumers getting more and more anti (even a few percent makes a difference) western companies disengaging and moving to other 3rd world sources, particularly true of electronics manufacturers.
  -Enormous govt and private debt that is effectively in default – being propped up by govt. A whole lot of infrastructure investment that is not paying off – ghost cities and high speed rail system that can’t cover costs.
  
  Xi may struggle to retain power if the politburo are no longer getting rich.
  
  The working age population collapse is particularly critical – there are only about 1/3rd as many 5 year olds as 50 year olds – at end of century china’s population will be less than half Indias, and perhaps only about same as USA

The issue of excess death has now reached the stage where it is well outside the realm of just the conspiracists. There is clear evidence that the number of deaths in many countries is exceeding the average of the last five years by sufficient margins to be of major concern. These are deaths over and above deaths attributable to Covid. The reality is that weekly death numbers should theoretically be below the average as Covid removed a significant number of people who had some comorbidity and would have only be showing up in the statistics now.

It is too early to conclude what is causing this although there are many theories and some co-relationships that deserve immediate study. Why are governmental authorities so slow to recognise this problem and launch urgent enquiries?

  The paper and cloth masks most people wear are about as much use as a dust mask made of chicken wire. St Ashley himself said as much at the beginning of this circus. Then the official line morphed into “masks save lives”…there was no change in the size of the virus particle.
  
  But I guess if Ms Marvelly wants to walk around forever looking like an Asian tourist that is no skin off our noses.

      It’s not as simple as that.
      The viral particles that masks are trying to capture are seldom free floating. They’re normally trapped in an aerosol (droplet) of many microns in size.

        I have noticed many times in cafe’s that mask wearers take their mask off and put it on the table beside them . They touched the dirty virus laden mask by hand and then folded and placed it on the table and the germ laden table is then used by the next diner.   I have just read Dr Kelvin Duncan’s book “Global Warming – a Counter-Blaste to the Man-made Global Warming Hypothesis” and he points out that the air is “stilling” ie there is less wind out there and this is an analysis of the global data. It is an excellent read that I have just had approved by another scientist.
  
  The other scientist’s view is that there are more and more scientists starting to question the present “global warming hypothesis” and he congratulates Kelvin Duncan for having the courage to take a stand.

Scotland have had 15,000 covid deaths while our carefully planned and implemented procedures have resulted in only 2000.
There was some mention of future investigations/enquiries into covid actions but these facts are the facts.

    Sweden for example has about 10.5mil but their aging population is about 20% compared to NZ’s which is about 16%.
    This and the number of people in the population with a serious ailment should also be taken into consideration when reporting deaths to the global data for covid deaths or related.

  That’s a pretty reasonable assessment. Most western countries had about 0.3% deaths from covid over last 2 years. We probably had about 10,000 less deaths due to extensive lockdowns at a cost of around $100 billion borrowed. $10million apiece to give some geriatrics another year or two of life fails every rational economic test, but Feelz is what matters.

    The Commonwealth nations will be represented by their various leaders at the funeral. There is no need for them to play an active part though. For starters, it would make the service far too long and reconciling various cultural traditions and issues of precedence would be a nightmare.
    
    Better to let the British have a British funeral in Britain, while the various other countries of which she was sovereign hold their own ceremonies, so that they can mourn and honour her in their own ways. That also allows many more of her subjects to participate, and in their own countries without having to travel for it.

Cindy yesterday, commenting on people who still wanted to wear masks: “We all need to respect everyone’s individual decisions”. No hint of irony whatsoever.

Sat next to a couple on a flight to Wellington yesterday afternoon. They whined, bitched and moaned about everyone either not wearing a mask or wearing them “badly”. He saw the news that as of midnight, no longer required. Her response? “Oh thank god”. Clearly irony not a strong point with her.

Cindy has dug us a hole so very deep that it will take generations to climb out of it. But we should all feel grateful.

Fuck that. Accountability.

Never got to watch the ‘MENG’ doco on Maori Television last night. Unfortunately it clashed with ‘1000-lb Sisters’ screening at the same time on TLC.

I was wondering if they addressed the Race-Relations-Commissioner’s earlier days, when he owned a Pokie Bar in the deprived Gisborne suburb of Kaiti, where a complaint was made that Meng had allegedly asked a Community Group which had applied for a poker machine grant, for a kickback in return for helping it be approved?

Or was the whole thing nothing more than the usual puff-piece that we’ve come to expect from government funded television 😀

  The doco was delayed for half an hour and I very nearly decided to head for bed.
  
  The documentary doesn’t purport to being a full bio of Meng; it is focused on his role as Race Relations Commissioner.
  
  It was a pretty disjointed doco…seemed to flip from one vignette to another… basically clips of Meng carrying out Race Relations engagements alongside views of his life back home in Gizzy over a period of a couple of years.
  
  We see Meng out cycling…then with his broken leg.
  We see photos of his parents and zoom clips of his mokopuna in London.
  
  It wasn’t a hagiography… We see Meng making balls-ups, but we also see how he easily relates to folks and, is trying to do his bit to make sure folks rub along well together in NZ.

Work at a Public Service institution.

Last evening a mid tier staff member communicated on internal channels that their partner was a Green Party candidate in the local bodies elections AND that we should support them in the upcoming vote.

I have raised red flag internally indicating it is totally inappropriate and that a discussion needs to occur. Suspect the reaction will be different to if I had suggested voting for a candidate with strong anti-vaccination, anti-mandate views.

I suspect, however, that the person involved knew it was inappropriate but doesn’t care because no doubt they see themselves and their partner as a crusader and “on the right side of history”.

Same person earlier this year asked whether they could borrow a diesel SUV because their EV was sub-optimal for a family holiday on South Island roads.

Entitlement runs deep in some.

  plc: I suspect EV’s will be “sub-optimal” for NZ conditions for quite some time yet. You are lucky to find gas stations in some parts of the country – particularly the South Island – let alone charging stations.
  
  Any word on the development of electric bulldozers and diggers? Or how they are going to be re-charged when working in the backblocks miles from anywhere?
  
  My first real job was on the Taranaki to Auckland gas pipeline in 1975. Much of the work we did was in remote areas, carving out the easement on which the pipeline was eventually entrenched and buried. Getting diesel tanks into the sites was difficult enough. Getting electricity in there would have been impossible.

    Nikola aims to make hydrogen-cell electric, long-distance trucks, and set up chains of fuel stations. It also is working on lithium-battery pick-up trucks.
    
    The Wall Street Journal reports charges allege false hyping of Nikola’s prospects and duping of non-professional investors.
    
    “In order to drive investor demand for Nikola stock, Milton lied about nearly every aspect of the business,” then-U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said when announcing the charges.
    
    Milton has pleaded not guilty. He floated the company in mid-2021 raising $US3.3 billion — before Nikola had made a single truck. In the sharemarket enthusiasm that followed, the company’s market value reached $US30 billion. Last Friday it was $US2.4 billion.
    
    The company, Nikola, isn’t charged. The newspaper says Nikola settled a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation for $US125 million in December, without admitting or denying wrongdoing.
    
    Among the allegations is that Milton claimed Nikola was producing hydrogen at $US4 a kilogram, compared with the market price of $US16.       I don’t doubt Nikola was a scam. I interviewed someone working there for a job, and discussion of their experience was revealing.
      
      Green hydrogen made using ultra cheap ‘stranded’ electricity generation (too far from consumers to be economically connected to grid, eg worse than Manapouri) is widely predicted to get down to but $1.5/kg within next 5 years. Energy wise that’s equivalent to USD$60-80/barrel oil, ie very competitive with fossil fuel in costs. And long term predictions are down to $1/kg in a few decades assuming normal cost learning curves that will come with volume.
      
      So replacing fossil fuels over next 30-50 years would likely happen even without subsidies or legislation due to eventual lower costs – and legislated push is probably economically of benefit over long term (even if a bit premature now), but it will take a long time to switch in new tech and infrastructure and replace existing vehicle fleets etc.

    Yes, JCB say electric is fine for the smaller ones which only get used a few hours a day. But for the large ones which run 18 hours a day, Electric wont work.

      Hydrogen would work OK for farms – need to store up a huge amount of energy for use in a few weeks of the year, and that could perhaps be done economically with PV + hydrogen plants on shed roofs. Hydrogen isn’t very good for delivery due to about 1/4 energy density of diesel.

    If that be a moral justification then all speech at all protests is a breach of the peace since it all may be construed as threatening or provoking violence, which is the acid test for such breaches.
    
    Get real. The man stood there and shouted an opinion, no profanity, no threats, he wasn’t even directly at the barrier, leaning over, waving a fist or any other such thing. yet he was assaulted and arrested.
    
    What’s the worst that could have happened? Well, in another five or six seconds the hearse would have passed and that would have been that.
    
    Was it in poor taste? Of course. But a cause for arrest and assault? Not if you have no sense of what is reasonable and just.

    I’ve worn a mask since the beginning of the pandemic and nobody has asked me why & I’ve not asked people why they haven’t.
    I’ve seen people wearing the most hideous clothes, or on one occasion none at all and haven’t rushed to broadcast my distain.

Wonder what celebrity US Princess Meghan Markle is making of it.
Can this somehow be made to be some slight on her, and used to illustrate a grievance?

From my side of the paywall it looks as if 14 MP’s are claiming ‘proficiency in Te Reo , well more fool them. Some level of understanding in French, German, Italian, Spanish, English gives greater enjoyment and access to Food, Wine, Theatre, Opera, Literature , Music, and film, which all help to greatly enrich our lives. I can’t think of one single worthwhile thing that knowledge of Māori language would add to my existence.

New Zealand’s proclamation for King Charles III
Am I being churlish?
As I understand it the proclamation is a constitutional matter
1. It is unclear to me why our Prime Minister spoke at the ceremony – The British PM did not speak at their ceremony.
2. Why was the PM’s partner a member of the proclamation party?
3. I am not against Aotearoa-New Zealand as our country’s name (I just haven’t been given the chance to choose). I was concerned on 2 accounts. Firstly the use of “Aotearoa-New Zealand” in a constitutional event and secondly in the te reo version New Zealand is translated as Aotearoa.
I wasn’t aware that Aotearoa was a te reo translation of New Zealand. I always thought Aotearoa meant “long white cloud’.

On points 1 and 2 it would be interesting to know who was who in the Australian & Canadian ceremonies.

  If Aotearoa was the name, why wasn’t it used in the United Tribes treaty? It wasn’t really until the 1960s that it became known as the Te Reo translation, even that was because of an English writer.
