Wellington City Council has decided to drop local speed limits close to walking pace [an exaggeration, but I’m channeling the crap spewed out by Council].

All sorts of mealy-mouthed rubbish advanced by its proponents, but the one question conspicuous by its absence is whether residents actually want this. I’m betting a penny to a pound of **** that they don’t.

And, to anticipate the usual chorus of ‘you voted for this shower’ – I didn’t, and nor did thousands of other Wellingtonians.

    Ms Pannett was quite clear that she wants to stop people from driving, apart from – maybe – the elderly. And when she uttered that insane response – ‘That’s not how we make decisions’ – Heather just broke down into laughter and basically ended the interview right there.
    
    It was an utter trainwreck, and I understand that Ms Pannett has NEVER driven anywhere in her life. Which explains a lot.

      At risk of opening a whole other can of worms, I’m a regular and keen cyclist and think all cycles should be registered, just like motorbikes. Would help to educate some cyclists that they can’t flout the laws the rest of us have to follow.

        Registration – not quite. In my school years we had to give the school the serial number of the bike. It was stamped into the frame under the seat. The reason being, to identify the bike if stolen.
        Don’t know if bike have serial numbers now.

        JamesS: Accidentally upticked you. So if we are all forced to dump cars (never going to happen) and go biking everywhere. Who exactly will pay for the road costs/repairs? Seems to me that cyclists are going to have to be charged. I agree, there is way too much meddling g in our lives by these pricks, but we all have to pay our fair share. Maybe sell a couple of the bikes to cover costs?

        Any cyclist aged 16+ (say) should have in some way to pass a road test, or at least prove that they know the road code. Maybe the Learners licence should be mandatory?
        
        It’s outrageous (their word) that some individuals can legally be in charge of vehicles, powered or otherwise, on the public highway & not have to be licenced.
        
        Those cargo ebikes are not small machines. Downhill with a lick of speed, they have plenty of mass & can be a danger to other road users.

        I am talking about the costs of road marking, Give Way and Stop signs (which none of you obey) Footpaths! Hear the word? FOOT path, not a fucking cycle path. Traffic lights (which none of you obey)
        Back to road marking, dotted yellow lines means ‘no stopping’ not no parking. Yet these seem to be starting places for a race!
        Maybe you are NOT one of them James Stephenson, but the arrogant pricks are out there.

Now that it is Maori language week our newspaper formerly known as stuff, now known as puna, had a headline at the top of the page “racism a cause of health gaps”.

Specialist Maori reporter, Glenn McConnell, tells us that racism is a cause of ethnic health gaps and quotes an authority “AUT public health director Dr Heather Came says the health system is built around Western values for Pākehā patients. She says the inability or unwillingness for that system to change, to better serve Māori patients, is proof of “institutional racism”.
McConnell then writes that “studies show Māori are more likely to die and have poorer access to treatment, information and diagnosis. For lung cancer, Māori mortality rates are 2.5 times higher than Pākehā.”
This article is headed up with an appeal to support the fight against health misinformation in public health by making a contribution.

Where does one start with such foolishness masquerading as fighting the fight against health misinformation? First of all when Captain Cook discovered New Zealand in 1769 the average life expectancy of a Maori person was about 30. He saw some very old Maori men who were about 40. So Maori life expectancy has improved dramatically since 1769.

Secondly the health system is built around Western values. Because there was no health system prior to 1769. There were no hospitals, there may have been folk remedies but there was no science, there was no written language, there were no doctors and nurses, Maori people died on average around age 30.

Thirdly the lung cancer rate for Maori may be higher than for Pakeha. But I do a quick Google search – “Maori rates of smoking”. I find this information – “The current Māori smoking rate is 31.4% in 2019/20… Māori smoking rates remain much higher than those for the overall population. Māori women have New Zealand’s highest smoking rates, at 32%.”
So in the 10 seconds it took me to access Google I find that Maori people smoke at a much greater rate than the overall population! Could this possibly account for the different lung cancer mortality rates???

How can we be united as a cohesive nation when national newspapers print such foolishness? When they tell us the health system is racist and by implication that doctors and nurses are racist?

I’d like to see our media held to account. They are deliberately pursuing a divisive agenda and slandering the good men and women of our health system. They are falsely painting Maori people as victims. They are deliberately spreading lies in the guise of combating health misinformation.

Who controls the narrative controls the future and that is exactly why Ardern and her rabble have controlled the media.   I think what he is saying on lung cancer is that a Maori person with lung cancer has a higher mortality rate than a non Maori person with lung cancer. He is saying they have poorer access to treatment and diagnosis.
  
  There could be many reasons for that, if it is correct, but racism is least likely. Maybe Maori are slower to seek treatment. Maybe they don’t go to appointments. It would need much analysis that is absent in the article.
  
  I just find it difficult to believe that if a Maori person turns up at the ER complaining of chest pains that they get less attention than the Chinese person with chest pains who turns up at the same time. However what happens AFTER that initial treatment may be vastly different. The Chinese person may have money and family who swing into action to encourage the patient to get follow up treatment and to make lifestyle changes. That does not make the health system racist.
  
  Finally, lung cancer it is not a helpful example here. If you are a long time smoker and you get lung cancer you are pretty much screwed, regardless of your ethnicity.

      New skin cancers total about 82,000 per year, according to the source below, compared to a total of 16,000 for all other types of cancer. Our skin cancer rates are the highest in the world.
      
      If it were Maori, rather than non-Maori, who were suffering severely from skin cancer, Stuff and the rest of the activists would be screaming “racism!”

    When I worked in Public Health this was the common theme: Maori only sought help when they were at death’s door, and then, if they survived would disappear when discharged from hospital and not keep appointments. Maybe they were frightened of the hospital or the treatment or of dying away from their marae.
    I do know that District Nurses were sent out to find people who had missed appointments and needed life-saving drugs. Quite often it was a wild-goose chase.
    But that was 40 years ago. I would have thought that, if they value their lives, they would have become more responsible by now.

      Dr. Lance O’Sullivan’s book about his experience in the North is about his Maori patients’ attitude to appointments, prescriptions and their responsibilities for their own health and their children’s health. As a Maori doctor he felt he was fighting a losing battle. Pretty depressing reading.

    A lot has to do with the rural/urban health divide. People just don’t have time or money for others to travel 2 or 300km+ to appointments, especially long treatments like chemo. Then there is a tradional skepticism that you only go to hospital to die.

  Researchers such as Dr Donna Cormack have highlighted barriers for Māori patients accessing healthcare. These include financial, physical and cultural difficulties for Māori accessing primary healthcare services, and differential treatment at higher levels of healthcare, meaning it’s harder to get specialist care, even when Māori patients are diagnosed at the same stage as others.
  
  I call BS on this, too. What financial barriers that are specifically targeting Maori? What physical barriers? That fact that you anyone lives 100k from a hospital can be a problem for treatment, but thats not racist FFS.
  Id like to see the evidence that there is “differential treatment at higher levels of healthcare”

      I and my family live in what could be described as a”remote area” – nearest town with medical facilities an hour away.
      That hasn’t ever stopped us accessing necessary health care though.
      If people are motivated to manage their own health instead of just denying symptoms cause can’t be bothered, then that is down to them.
      Over the years there have been some medical events here – heart attacks, accidents etc – and there has never been a problem getting ambulances and/or emergency helicopters to attend.

  I read a quote from Jesus yesterday “A kingdom divided against itself will fall”. NZ is certainly becoming a kingdom divided against itself because of the poisonous rhetoric coming from our media. A country that has a constant looping conversation about race and racism isn’t a happy or healthy place. It is like a race based version of the movie “First Fifty Dates”. Every day in the media “Did you know we are a racist country with a racist history” next day “Did you know we are racist country with a racist history”. next day “Did you know we are a racist country with a racist history” and so on. Journalist, Karl Du Fresne has spoken often of what the current media don’t talk about. Pakeha men and women and Maori men and women saw a lot of good in each other, fell in love, had children, built a new country. Karl’s view is a positive story of our history and I like that version.

  So Ardern’s Labour Government’s own promotion of ”He Ara Waiora – A Pathway towards Wellbeing – [which] draws on four tikanga principles: manaakitanga (care and respect); kaitiakitanga (stewardship/guardianship); whanaungatanga (the relationships/connections between us); and ōhanga/whairama (prosperity)”* fail, it was because Ardern’s Labour Government fails to observe these themselves.

    So this is incorrect.
    
    There are units inside what where the DHB’s that address housing as a health issue. If those units say a house is cold and damp and needs heating and insulation, then it becomes an automatic Warmer Kiwi Homes install job (private homes only I understand).
    
    For rental properties there is legislation regarding standards of insulation.
    
    A chunk of the problem around dampness in homes is people not airing houses correctly. Open the goddamn windows when cooking if no extractor fan! Open the bathroom window when showering/bathing if no extract fan. And open the windows everyday to allow fresh air through the house…

  If you walk into any hospital in NZ you are likely met with what is possibly the most diverse workforce in the country. Are we really expected to believe that all of those ethnicities get together to be racist to Māori? It’s so absurd. The gender pay gap must be the result of sexism, Māori health outcomes like the over representation in crime and prison stats must be systemic racism there’s just no other explanation, well not one the supports the post modernist neo Marxist theories that is and god knows they needs plenty of support.

  I don’t believe that Maori have lesser access to healthcare based on their race.
  
  Outcomes are based on seeking advice, and following it. The differences in healthcare required for a particular health problem for any given race are so minor as to be irrelevant.
  
  If a person is manifestly overweight and they are told they need to lose weight or die early, it doesn’t matter what race they are. Follow the advice and get a better outcome. Don’t follow the advice and die early. Pretty simple.

  Recently it was reported that the new centralised health authority instructed all hospitals to schedule a time and date for everyone on a waiting list. It has also instructed specialists to spend less time on follow up consultations and more doing operations. In addition it is well known that the government considers our health system to be institutionally racist.
  
  I find it hard to see how an organisation can be racist. Maybe in apartheid South Africa. People can be racist.
  
  In summary, if you work in health your bosses consider you to be lazy, stupid, uncaring and racist. Nice.

  Part of an accusation Sharma made about Lorck now seems to have some substance so you pronounce him correct in the process ignoring all the other accusations that are completely unsubstantiated at this time.
  If you make enough claims just on the odds of probability you should get a hit of some sort on one or two.

  That is an extremely low estimate.
  
  Consider all the things you do because of criminals:
  * You lock your house and car etc. That costs you money in locks, alarms, getting keys cut, etc etc. It costs you time when you lose your keys.
  * Ditto passwords and PIN numbers on bank cards etc.
  * Insurance costs.
  * Avoid certain areas after dark because of crime. Many businesses thus get less business because people are reluctant to visit an area due to crime.
  
  That’s all on top of the stuff they normally measure:
  * Insurance costs
  * Costs of policing/incarceration etc.

    That would be a politicization of the FBI. There is a discernable difference between kidnapping and transporting. Politically that is a dangerous thing to do so close to mid term elections.
    
    The democrats are committing to an open-border policy on the basis of poorer migrants having a voting record of favoring them and leaving them in red-leaning states as a blatant gerrymandering strategy. In the interim these Southern States are left to deal with unskilled, illegal migrants and the resulting social problems that go with them.
    
    What Abbott and DeSantis are doing cunningly is throwing the problem back in the faces of the proponents of the plan, who surprise, surprise don’t like it.
    
    The left hate Desantis almost more than Trump because unlike Trump – he does not just say. Ergo why he would be an excellent President.

I watched the ABs run away with the game last night as a consequence of the silliness of the Australian first five taking an eternity to kick the ball after they were awarded a penalty several minutes before full time.
Several American sports have shot clocks, with baseball the latest. Plus cricket.
Maybe something could be organized for rugger. Particularly after the ref hollers ‘play the ball’ and when sides drag their heels getting to set pieces. Maybe ten seconds at set pieces from when the ball is available.

  I think that game will forever be known as ‘Foley’s Folly’. He definitely lost the plot, where wasting time wasn’t of the essence at the time. All they had to do was kick the damned thing out, stroll to the lineout, polish the ball, throw it into the lineout and then kick the thing out again. The final hooter would have sounded while the lineout was being formed.

Probably not new to some here, but last night I came across this Archive NZ film of the 28th (Maori) Battalion returning back to NZ (Wellington) in January 1946.

Wow what a welcome back on a stunning day and the preparation of the food beforehand was a concerted effort by their whanau and the Marae’s.

(Good thing today’s “authoritarian” health academics and officials weren’t around back then – look at all that meat and fat being prepared – let alone the old Kuia smoking a pipe)!

Anyway good to see the old Wellington waterfront (some things haven’t changed much), also amazing to think that the oldest of the people there presumably would have been born in the 1870’s-1880’s (if not possibly earlier).

And good to see that Maori were living longer lives back then too, as they are today (which is something today’s radical academics and MSM tend to forget when disparaging the benefits of “colonisation” when Maori had a shorter life expectancy pre-European times etc)!

Another interesting snippet is at the 8 minute mark, a memorial for gunner Jack Seymour is unveiled …. any relation to ACT’s David Seymour by chance?

      You had to mask up while walking around M10 isles then take it off while sitting in the cafe. The cafe is partly in the isle or the garden section with everyone else who had to mask up!
      
      We had one particularly strict bakery who wouldn’t serve you without a mask unfortunately they purchased the full premium covid package Labour had to sell.
      Except…all I had was some safety gear…what could possibly go wrong?
      …they let me pick up a coffee and a fine cream donut wearing a mesh chainsaw visor and earmuffs!
      I thought the earmuffs would muffle the howls of outrage but no, not needed, those big rona bugs aye?

      I got the impression masks had been dumped because there’s new medicines available. Well that’s what the nice person on the radio advert told me yesterday. So I tried to phone the Covid 0800 number and Healthline, but they couldn’t tell me just what those new meds are. I was told to phone my GP to get the low down on these amazing new wonder drugs.. that no one can tell me about. I’m a wee bit confused.

  One of the greatest disadvantages in resurrecting/saving the Maori language is almost complete lack of Maori-language literature, both prose and poetry. Virtually all Maori writers use English as their medium, I’m not aware of any literary work in Maori, apart from that what is contained in the five volumes of Te ao mārama which was published from 1992 to 1996. But even that was not entirely in Maori.

      Nonsense. Is English required to speak Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and all varieties of Chinese to name a few?
      The problem with Maori is different. It has been displaced by English, because it wasn’t sufficiently developed to cater for the needs of its speakers in the modern world. Rightly or wrongly its speakers decided that English is of far greater utility to the point when it became their vernacular. This process was facilitated by the attitude of quite a number of prominent Maoris (Apirana Ngata for example) until it reached the point of non return.
      Can it be reversed? I doubt it. The only example of successful revival is Hebrew, but its story is completely different from that of Maori.

Didn’t Audrey Young recently rate new Justice Minister Kiri Allan very highly? Allan looks like she is going to be one of the weaker Ministers if her comments about the Alan Hall case are any indication of her abilities.

The Minister cannot see any conflict of interest even though the Justice Ministry unreasonably denied Hall’s applications for the Royal prerogative on three separate occasions. In addition, in 2019 Ministry officials didn’t even want to look at his case.

Yet, two years later, when the same evidence was presented to the Supreme Court, Hall’s convictions were immediately quashed, with both Crown Law and the Supreme Court aghast at the deliberate attempts by police and prosecution to manipulate and obscure evidence in order to convict Hall.

Indeed, Crown Law took the exceptional step of criticising the Department of Justice’s advice in Hall’s second and third applications for mercy, stating bluntly that it was wrong.

Now the Ministry is heavily involved in Hall’s application for compensation.

This is reminiscent of the Justice Ministry’s involvement in the Ministerial Inquiry into the Peter Ellis case in 2000. The Ministry’s chief legal counsel at the time had previously made it clear she believed Ellis was guilty. Yet she had considerable involvement in advising the inquiry head throughout the year long inquiry. (Furthermore, the inquiry head was a mate of the Ellis trial judge and should’ve declared a conflict of interest, but didn’t.) Needless to say the inquiry concluded that Ellis’ conviction was safe.

Indeed it is disgraceful.

Crown Law didn’t even ask for a re-trial of Hall as it knew it would have been a waste of time and money, not to mention unethical as it knows he is innocent. But the Justice Ministry doesn’t seem to be so sure. The reason we have a Criminal Cases Review Commission is because the Justice Ministry cannot be relied upon to accurately and honestly review wrongful convictions. Yet Ministry officials are involved with assessing whether compensation should be paid for wrongful convictions! It’s unbelievable that the Minister cannot see the problem with that arrangement.

  There is more access to food now than in any other time in history, mainly due to the spread of western technology etc. Some peoples in areas with low food had, over a very long period of time evolved to require less food. Those people now have access to a huge amount of food and their systems aren’t as capable of dealing with it.

The Lancet Commission on lessons for the future from the COVID-19 pandemic

The Lancet Commission has just released this report. You can read an html version or download the pdf (57 pages) at this link:

The second article on this page refers to what they call ‘prosociality’ (1 page) which provides a brief discussion of a way ahead for dealing with future pandemics. Here is the first paragraph of this document:

“The Lancet Commission on lessons for the future from the COVID-19 pandemic, published on Sept 15, lays bare what has been nothing less than a massive global failure—a failure of rationality, transparency, norms of public health practice, operational coordination, and international solidarity. The Commission shows that national governments were too slow and too cautious in their response to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. They paid too little attention to the most vulnerable groups in society. Their responses were hampered by low public trust and an epidemic of misinformation and disinformation. The result was millions of preventable deaths and a reversal in progress towards sustainable development for many countries. A multilateral system developed after the World War 2 did not hold up to a modern pandemic. Global collaboration and solidarity were good in business and science but poor in politics and international relations. The Commission proposes five pillars that are essential in fighting emerging infectious diseases: prevention, containment, health services, equity, and global innovation and diffusion. To achieve these pillars the Commission argues that governments, regulators, and institutions must be reoriented toward society as a whole, rather than the interests of individuals—a concept the Commissioners call prosocialty. Without this shift, the world is vulnerable and unable to tackle effectively any global threat.”

Much to read and think about. It’s going to be very interesting to see international reaction.
