  What I like about this is that Ron DeSantis is making the left live by their own rules. They are the ones who want open borders and proclaim themselves as welcoming of immigrants both illegal and legal. They are the ones who signal their virtue on social media about undocumented immigrants. So Ron DeSantis is making them live by their own rules. You say you want open borders and undocumented immigrants? Well here, have 50 in your street, living next door to you.
  
  The delicious thing is the fuss they kick up when they are forced to live by their own rules. When they have the Mexican illegal immigrant next door and he is not there to clean their swimming pool or tend to their gardens.
  
  Ron DeSantis is prepared to fight. That is so refreshing from the right. Perhaps Chris Luxon could pick up some pointers from him?

      However the Powerline blog is a reliable source on these matters –

A very good opinion piece in the Herald by the always insightful Bryce Wilkinson. Opinion: Tackling the unfolding public policy mess after 2023

What struck me was the change in Treasury briefings to incoming Ministers. In a galaxy far far away they were – according To Dr Wilkinson – hefty and required ‘both technical expertise and deep specific knowledge’. These days not so much. Actually nowhere near so much.

For example

Treasury’s briefing to its incoming Minister of Finance in 2020 was a mere 54 pages. Only eight pages had a policy context. The Ministry of Education’s 2020 briefing for its Minister was a mere 28 pages. Neither briefing identified lack of literacy and numeracy as a problem.

What changed?

  No briefings on International Obligations for the Safe and efficient passage of Seafarers transiting Countries even though NZ had signed the UN declaration to that effect.
  More concerned how they would be seen to treat Foreign Seafarers coming to NZ and a Total Disdain for NZ Seafarers serving overseas keeping supply chains running.
  Unfortunately , All these Ministries are filled with regulators and “political Ring ins” with absolutely No idea how the real world works.

    If Ministers are across their portfolios they can make life difficult for senior staff. Mainly by requiring them to do their job and deliver required outcomes within budget.
    
    Maybe The Treasury and Reserve Bank could focus a bit less on wellbeing and diversity and more on their day jobs.

  Wellington’s Stuff arm has whacked Gilmore just as local body voting begins. This is one of the heaviest NZ news media attacks in recent times.
  
  Aaron Gilmore is one of 10 candidates in Wellington’s East Ward for three City Councillor posts.
  
  Gilmore seems to be a prat, but to hit him so heavily a day or so after voting begins seems extraordinary.
  
  First, the incident it refers to that led to the end of Gilmore’s Parliamentary career. Stuff describes this: “Nine years after a drunken outburst at a hotel restaurant – allegedly asking a barman, ‘do you know who I am’.”
  
  Gilmore had been drinking at a private outing, and was offensively rude to a waiter. It’s certainly under the level of public comments by Muldoon when he was in his cups, and I don’t recall any earlier accusations that Gilmore was drunk.
  
  Gilmore paid for that incident with the end of his Parliamentary career, after he was pilloried in the media in the same way the media went after a Prime Minister for allegedly tweaking a waitress’s pony tail.
  
  Maybe Gilmore’s apartment behaviour is as bad as Stuff portrays it, but Stuff seems to slant Gilmore’s response, with this: “His response to Stuff comes in the form of a 1766-word email sent at 1.46am.”
  
  A person Gilmore is in dispute with is anonymously quoted as saying: “He had these grand Napoleon ideas.”
  
  Poor old Gilmore. Kicked out of Parliament because of being a rude twerp at a private dinner party (admittedly in a restaurant).
  
  Now, not only his local body ambitions likely munted, but there are his business dealings to consider.
  
  Even if he thinks he as a chance of damages, it’s bugger all use suing Stuff, because, in the event of legal victory, the newspaper company has virtually no tangible assets to seize.
  
  The candidates for the three council seats in the Eastern ward:
  
  Gilmore, Independent; Steph Edlin, Independent;
  Rob Goulden, Independent; Sarah Free, Independent; Luana Scowcroft, Green; Ken Ah Kuoi, Independent; Tim Brown (no description of affiliation), Teri O’Neill, Labour; Nathan Meyer, Independent; Atul Prema, Independent.

    Aaron Gilmore will need about 3,000 votes to be elected. Put simply, it was never going to happen, regardless of whatever effect this morning’s Stuff article has on his chances. If he receives 300 votes, I will be astonished.
    
    Tim Brown is the immediate-past chairman of Wellington Airport. He is likely to fill the “centre-right” slot in the ward, currently held by Sean Rush (who is retiring at this election), although a “ghost from the past”, Rob Goulden, is having another crack. See https://wellington.govt.nz/your-council/elections/2022-elections/information-for-voters/candidate-information/motukairangi-eastern-candidates/tim-brown (then scroll down for information about the other candidates).
    
    Atul Prema has withdrawn from the election. Any first-preferences given for him will be transferred to the second-preference candidates of the relevant voters, to become additional first-preference votes for them.

  Peterwn: I share your confusion…there is an element of “piling on” in that piece on Gilmore. Having said that, the man makes himself a very easy target, just as he did in parliament even well before his much quoted “Do you know who I am?” moment.
  
  I never saw any MP – from whatever party – swallow the bait Labour MP’s trolled in front of him with such monotonous regularity. He really is his own worst enemy. And more than a little sad really.

  Jacinda has many, many failings as a Prime Minister. Her performance in that capacity has been unmatched in its ineptitude. She will, hopefully soon before she can do much more economic, social and environmental damage, leave a disastrously dreadful legacy which New Zealand may never fully recover from.
  
  In this particular case, however, I am not sure what there is to take exception to. She and Clarke do exactly what everybody else in the line does, and exactly what any other Prime Minister would have done. What do we think she should have done different?

Seems like UK Prime Minister Liz Truss is off to a good start on environmental issues. She has appointed lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg as Secretary of the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy and Ranil Jayawardena as Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs and Anne-Marie Trevelyan as Secretary of State for Transport.

They are considered at the “dry” end on economics and environmental policy. They have caused great grief to the green lobby groups which is a positive thing.

Trevelyan tweeted, for example, that the country didn’t need more wind farms because “we aren’t getting hotter, global warming isn’t actually happening”

I remember back in the late 60’s early 70’s escorting a British Task Force taking relief supplies to Pakistan when they had a flooding incident and the Pakistan Govt wanted to charge the Brits Landing Tax on the relief supplies.   For example, I have a problem with a draft under one of my doors, which is much more serious than climate change.
  Some people fret over which colour tie to wear – this is a much more serious problem than climate change.
  Some people say that politicians want the people living poorer lives. Unless and until I see the politicians reject this Net Zero nonsense, I find it difficult to disagree with them.

Some ratbags are stirring shit on Facebook about the Queen lying in State. Strange they have not been banned.
The message they are saying is the amount of time from the Queen’s death to the actual funeral. They are saying there are strange smells emanating from the coffin, or there is no body in the coffin.
So let me tell you about what happens when it takes time from death. Say a visitor to NZ dies and the body needs to go back to their homeland, but say flights not available for some time. The body would go in the plane hold of course.
So what happens. Well me being in the engineering trade I learned many things including sheet metal work. I know of a guy on the Shore who is called upon to do this. He uses PGI, pre galvanised iron, or galv sheet. Makes a casket to git into the coffin. When the embalmers have finished the body is put into the casket – the the sheet metal guy comes along with the lid and solders it on. The casket then goes in the coffin. There will be no smell, the casket is all soldered – sealed completely.
I am guessing this is the process used for Queen Elizabeth.

I really is sad when these bastards do this sort of shit stirring.

      That is done in Alaska. Body can be in a freezer at the morgue for many months. The reason is the permafrost. Can’t dig a grave until the ground thaws.
      And that is just in Anchorage.
      Grandma of our host family died and could not be buried for 8 months, there are sort of two funerals.
      Many of course are cremated, then buried in the short summer.

For decades NZ pushed the whole-language approach to reading in our schools. It is difficult not to link the decline in our children’s literacy levels to this method of teaching reading.

I never realised how low the level of literacy was for many children until I went secondary school teaching in my 40s and had a class of 13-14 year olds with reading and spelling levels still very much at a primary school stage.

As a science teacher it was frustrating to see pupils failing to progress because they couldn’t understand exam questions or couldn’t write clear answers to questions, even though they could verbally explain things well enough.

It has only been in recent years when I’ve volunteered help for literacy work at a local high school that I’m beginning to see where much of the problem lies….
Without exception, the poor readers I see have missed out on some of the very basic skills required to master reading.
They haven’t been taught how to “decode” a word… how to really look at it and sound it out.

The emphasis in whole-language reading was always to think about what the words could be in a sentence, taking clues from the context of the writing or from pictures in a story… i.e. guess the unknown word/words.

It means I’ve encountered pupils who don’t discern the tense or even sense of words…. they are just as likely to read
roast, roasting or roasted as roasts or road.

It looks like that after 40 years of wandering down the wrong track, NZ schools are realising that they’ve been pretty poor at teaching children how to master the basics of reading.

  As a kid who struggled with dyslexia (and an adult who still does to an extent), I thank people like you who really help kids improve their life trajectories.
  
  Yes, it does astound me how something so bad can persist so long. It’s almost like looking back at something like phrenology and asking: “What were they thinking?”.
  
  The modern approaches to literacy and mathematics are awful. If phrenology is now classified as a pseudoscience, one hopes the current methods will one day be classified as pseudo-pedagogy.
  
  Subtle nuances of language are required for the precise thinking that underpins our legal systems, contracts, science and engineering and pretty much the whole modern world.
  
  It would seem this “whole language” nonsense has robbed a generation or more of this. No wonder “feelz” are becoming more popular!

      If we were going to do that analysis on this 13 week house, then it would be closer to a year, not 13 weeks.
      
      As Alan WIlkinson says, erecting a prefabricated house is not equivalent to building it.
      
      The vast bulk of work that normally goes on in house building has already been done offsite (taking 7 of the 13 weeks).
      
      Now I personally think that prefabrication offsite is potentially a vastly more efficient way of building because it can be done inside a large warehouse using better methods and equipment than cutting individual 2x4s in the wind and rain while balanced on top of a ladder.
      
      Once streamlined, this method could probably produce one house (or this size) a day, or better.
      
      Prefabricated housing is nothing really new. It has been carried out for centuries. Even the first colonial buildings that are still standing at Waitangi were prefabricated buildings imported from Oz.
      
      Yes, I think this is a better way to build houses, but there is no need to spout the bullshit that it was built in 13 hours. It wasn’t.

Something that caught my eye was one of the New Zealanders invited to the Queen’s funeral is Jacinda Amey.

Not exactly a well known name. Jacinda works for the Department of Conservation. She is the only living recipient of the New Zealand Cross. This is the civilian equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Jacinda received the award for an act of bravery way back in 1992. Her colleague was attacked by a great white shark in sub Antarctic waters. He lost his arm. She dived into the water with the shark still present and towed him to safety.

Not that there was quite like this occasion to compare with then, but we had to queue for very little back then.
Everywhere now where I’ve heard there are long lines of people we could just wander along and have a look like going to Te Papa.

I speak with small business owners who are struggling and bouncing along on the bones of their arses.

I see more To LET commercial space than ever before. Some areas are getting a bit of the ghost town vibe.

Yet we’re told NZ has dodged a bullet and is not showing signs of a recession – the GDP is strong!

Perhaps some of this is due to a very mangled definition of GDP. It looks at whole spending, not just the productive stuff.

When the government throws $200k-odd at the opening ceremony for Transmission Gulley, or millions to the gangs to run programs/recruitment capaigns, those are all counted as GDP – but they do absolutely SFA to build the economy. In fact, all the extra tax these cause adds drag to the economy and makes the real economy (businesses etc) more precarious.

I heard the nzta (legal name) radio advert promoting road to zero. the elimination strategy for road deaths is as futile as jacinda’s covid elimination. like the failed covid strategy, this one will also see death and damage. I wonder is the nzta strategy driven by ideology & hatred of cars or, pragmatic response to no funding to repair and build the roads? genuinely confused.

  There was a pothole in the street right outside my house.
  For a start it’s not the responsibility of NZTA.
  I contacted AT via the web site, explained the problem and a couple of days later the street was repaired.
  Maybe that’s an advantage of living in Manukau City rather than out in the wilderness somewhere.

Finally a District Council that is prepared to consider recommendations without thinking they are a ‘rubber stamp.’
New Plymouth District councillors have voted 9-5 to reject 183 of the 286 proposed rural road speed reduction recommendations.
They have opted to support reductions, mostly to 30 kph, around schools and the Taranaki Base Hospital.
Perhaps Taranaki Federated Farmers president Mark Hooper best explained the problem, when he suggested the speed restrictions were instead of spending on sealing and road improvements.

I see there have been a spate of fatal crashes in central NI. We drove down to Tauranga last weekend in wet weather and the state of the roads was shameful. Most of the way the signs said slippery in wet weather and I had to focus on keeping out of the main tracks which were shiny smooth wet. Horrifically inadequate maintenance is being done.

  I was shown a you tube appearance recently by some awful woman who went on and on about the needs, rights and feelings of MinorAttracted Persons.
  Not once did she mention the minors (aka children) or what they thought about it.

Interestingly enough not one of has been watching the TV Queenathon.
One even said he hoped to die before Charles does ….couldn’t handle it again.
