Netflix vs TVNZ vs Three : Are we witnessing the slow death of Kiwi TV.
While this story is under paywave I am posting it for the headlines as I believe you reap the seeds you sow and this will end the bullshit we have had to suffer for years that is created by there own greed, lies and deciet.

  Since covid reared it’s head, we’ve slowly but surely turned the “normal” TV off. We haven’t watched terrestrial TV for at least 6 months.
  I skim read headlines to get an idea what it is I’m supposed to be thinking or engaging in, what I do see and read is mindless dross.
  We now source the bulk of our entertainment and news from alternative outlets. Sometimes we watch TVNZ on demand, usually for “The Simpsons” which is actually more stimulating than anything else on there.
  
  I can’t see this changing anytime soon. Mainstream media in NZ is a total embarrassment. Mike McRoberts in some article last week showing us how “Maori” and “tough” he is was laughable.

    I like watching Star Trek series, and had been watching previous seasons of Star Trek: Discovery on tvnz on demand.
    
    The first three seasons have been reasonably entertaining, however it has taken a huge lurch for season 4. It is now unmitigated, boring, intersectional trash. So disappointing.

So Helen Clark is ‘angry’ that Bank of NZ intends to sell its art collection (worth about $10M). She forgets that it is a private collection and the owners can do what they like with it.
If she is so concerned that the collection is not sold off, she should vent her anger by fundraising to purchase the works. Surely she has sufficient mana and influence to persuade 10 donors to dib in $1M each. Depending on circumstances the donors may be able to claim a 33% rebate from IRD on some or all of their donations. She could even aim for another $1M to pay a ‘commission’ to the original artists or families (a concept she no doubt continues to promote).

    I have a story from some years back where a NZ Company was looking to buy a traditional London one of hundreds of years standing.
    The purchase offer was made and in principle accepted.
    It did not proceed but I was told later by a participant that the price accepted by the London Company included all the appurtenances, including the City building owned by the seller, and that included ancient Board paintings etc which the value alone actually exceeded the agreed purchase offer.

  You can be sure that this is a trial run. You can probably expect it to ramp up over the next month, as National candidate selections take place. A number of selections have already called for nominations, and selection meetings will be underway over the next few weeks, running through to Christmas and possibly beyond.

A response to Ten-and-a-half reasons why you should learn te reo Māori;

(1) Ever sat in an official opening ceremony and wondered what all those words were about?

Um, no.

I can quite genuinely say I don’t even care about most of the English words in most opening ceremonies. In my experience opening ceremonies tend to be heavy on rote platitudes and jargon, meaningless “inspirational” anecdotes and quotes that don’t inspire, and generally banal trite. The thing I truly want is for them to be over as quickly as possible (and that goes for both the English and Maori portions).

(2) You can learn words that have no English equivalent.

OK, I’ll grant this one to some extent. But English has a pretty extensive vocabulary already, including many routinely-used terms borrowed from other non-Maori languages. The number of Maori words that genuinely offer some distinctive subtlety of meaning not already captured is going to be small. And I’ll also note that this argument only gives a reason to learn individual te-reo words, not the whole language.

(3) The Waiata Anthem project has translated popular New Zealand pop songs into te reo Māori for the past three years.

How is this an argument for learning Maori? If you already enjoy a song in English, what particularly is gained by listening to it in Maori? The music, the notes, instruments and tempo will be exactly the same. And with music, does understanding the lyrics really matter that much? I enjoy K-pop, Rammstein, and Bollywood musical numbers without having a clue what the words mean. How many Crusaders fans do you think understand the lyrics of Vangelis’s “Conquest of Paradise”.

(4) You’ll never get lost driving around the North Island again because Kaiaua and Kawerau start to sound different once you’ve nailed your te reo vowels.

Does pronunciation really matter in navigation? In 99% of cases you’ll be typing place names into a GPS or following road signs. Either way the main thing is knowing how to spell the place name, how it is pronounced is irrelevant.

(5) You will gain deeper understanding of our unique physical land. The provenance of the language evolved from people who lived closely to the land and, over 50 or 60 generations, this connection has become interwoven with the language. That there are many words for types of wind or that whakataukī draw upon common weather or wildlife characteristics brings a richer understanding of life in the three islands of Aotearoa.

I honestly don’t even know how to parse this nonsensical BS. What does this ridiculous word-salad even mean?

(6) You’re a New Zealander, right?

This “reason” to learn Maori just shows what vile, exclusionary bigots those pushing this agenda are.

I was born in the South Island, and spent all my life there until a few years ago. I love my meat pies and fish and chips, and went to rugby and cricket games with my father. I have a New Zealand birth certificate and passport. And yet, according to this nasty individual, if I choose not to waste my time learning Maori I am apparently not a New Zealander.

I have only one response to this – Fuck You. Choosing not to learn Maori does not in any way make me any less of a New Zealander. If you truly believe that, it says more about you than me.

(7) As a metaphorical language, te reo Māori encourages us to use signals and parallel meanings. Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui a Tāne (A tōtara has fallen in the forest of Tāne) means a leader has passed away. Kāore te kumara e whaakii ana tana reka (The kumara does not say how sweet it is) shows the importance of humility. I’ve noticed that learning these whakataukī (proverbs) has improved my ability to bring more symbolism into my English prose, making my native tongue more interesting.

First comment, the use of proverbs and metaphors is hardly unique to Maori. Every language and culture does it. Many of these can be insightful or useful and they can be well-worth learning. But it is certainly not something unique to te reo Maori.

Second comment, proverbs can be just as useful when translated. Take an example given above – “the kumara does not say how sweet it is”. It’s a great insight and well-expressed. But it’s just as useful when translated into English. I didn’t need to learn Maori to gain value from it.

(8) In te ao Māori, words can be gifts. Your understanding of proper nouns, place names and markers will deepen with your appreciation of the imagination and knowledge that goes into naming.

And yet again, this is not something unique (or even particularly distinctive) about te reo Maori. Almost every culture will have at least a few distinctive and memorable place names. Take “The Sign of the Takahe” (for those unfamiliar, this is the name of a historic building in Christchurch) or “The Golden Gate Bridge” (which is not literally golden or literally a gate) as English language examples. And likewise every culture will have plenty of simple, functional names, like Rotoiti (“little lake”).

Plus again, taking advantage of this does not require learning the whole Maori language. All that is needed is to learn the specific name you want to bring up and it’s etymology. Several times we had visitors from overseas in the factory and we used the Maori name for the South Island, Te Waipounamu, meaning “the water(s) of Greenstone” as a conversation piece. (Of course the fact that in English the island almost doesn’t have a name, simply being “the South Island” made for almost as much conversation, but never mind that.)

(9) We live in the only place on the entire planet where te reo Māori is an official and regularly-used language. Besides your being able to deliver a great party trick during your trips to Paris or Uzbekistan, this is reason enough to help keep the language alive.

The author of this piece should re-read that first sentence. Because this isn’t a reason to learn Maori – it’s a very strong reason not to bother learning Maori. New Zealand is the only place in the world you will ever use it, and even there calling it regularly used (outside of very forced and artificial use by the media and government) is extremely dubious. Its utility as a language is pretty much zero.

If you’re in Paris or Uzbekistan, OK throwing out a few words of Maori might be a neat party trick. But how much more practical and useful would be learning a few phrases of French or Uzbek. Plus the locals will appreciate you learning their language as well, earning you more kudos than knowing some random Polynesian language they’ve probably never heard of.

(9.5) In many circles, you can win friends and influence people because you can properly wrap your tongue around a good combined diphthong like ‘auau‘, or nāianei, making those of us not raised on a marae sound, well, pretty switched on.

All I can say to this is the author travels in very, very different social circles than I do.

(10) It’s a big year for the language. Fifty years ago, a group of young people presented a petition to Parliament calling for te reo to be taught in schools and made official, triggering the language’s renaissance we are experiencing today. You too can be part of this movement. Why not? Start your te reo journey and be part of our nation’s efforts to keep our indigenous language alive.

Fifty years of people wasting their time is not something to celebrate.

  Love the bit about NZ being the only place on earth that the dead language is regularly used. It’s it? And if so, by who. According to statistics this week only 2% of the population that says they are Māori can actually hold a conversation in it (a whole 16,000 people). The target of 1 million speakers by 2040 has been reduced to 200k, and the number of people that can speak more than three words has increased from 5% to 7% in five years.
  
  That’s a failure worse than kiwi build right there, and a sure sign that absolutely no one cares (including Māori) so really they should just give up now. I agree with the commentator the reasons for learning the dead language are simply laughable. It would be more advantageous to learn the language of earthworms comparatively speaking.

  Re (5) Best evidence is maori have been here for 800 years or so. For 60 generations that would mean the average mother was 12 or 13 at first pregnancy. Probably quite an accurate estimate! It would of course be racist to suggest there might be anything wrong with that.

  To your excellent fisking, I would add that none of these are reasons why I would voluntarily learn a language.
  
  I think #5 is a variation of #8, ie, place names can tell something of the history or geography of a place; often interesting, but scarcely a reason for learning a language, and there is an online database of Maori place names and their meanings for those who want to know.
  
  The many words for types of wind is a variation of the dubious many-Inuit-words-for-snow claim, with the same problem – the meaning can be expressed in English through noun phrases, and if you really need to use a particular word often enough , borrow it – hence, hurricane, typhoon.
  
  #6 is the local equivalent of the no-true-Scotsman fallacy.

“3 Waters” – drip, drip, drip …
… Some commentators paint a picture of Ardern as being held hostage to the agendas of the senior Maori leaders such as Nanaia Mahuta and Willie Jackson. Journalist Graham Adams, for example, has written about how Ardern doesn’t show any great enthusiasm for, or belief in, her Government’s controversial Three Waters reform programme, and as a very cautious and poll-driven leader, “would normally back away from any policy as widely disliked as Three Waters soon after the poll results arrived on her desk”.
Adams argues that the Māori caucus has pursued many of the most important and controversial reform agendas of the current Government – this “includes setting up a separate Māori Health Authority, easing the path to Māori wards, handing more power to iwi in the conservation estate, in local government, and the Resource Management Act”.

… the Three Waters reform programme has become an albatross around the Government’s neck, which few are willing to defend. It will continue to cost Labour popular support. But should Labour pull back on the more controversial parts of the programme, such as giving half of the control over water assets to iwi?
The problem is that to do so would be to give Te Pati Māori a huge stick to beat Labour with. It could seriously jeopardise Labour’s hold on their Māori seats next year. Likewise, pulling back on the Government’s co-governance agenda would create havoc for the Māori caucus. A Māori caucus rebellion in Labour would be guaranteed.

Why is Luxon not more vocal now in pointing this out.
Especially as the Water Services Entities Bill – to establish the four publicly owned, “co-governance” water services entities – has already had a first reading in Parliament, and is in Select Committee now.

Ardern should be forced to explain where the nation-wide non-Maori side of the “conversation “ she promised actually is.
Will she say the select committee was it. You have had your say.
Sorry, the legislation has been passed.

  National signed us up to the UNDIP even though Maori aren’t Indigenous, as they proudly name the 7 Waka they came to NZ on.
  
  National’s own Constitution holds Te Riti center as the founding document of NZ. (it is on their website).

In view of reports about NZ TV channels I notice the UK Ministry of Defense are making their updates on Russia Ukraine war on Twitter. 21st century wars are now fought on social media as well as the Battlefield.
Recent report on Twitter says supplies from Belgorad in Russia are being cut off.
Ukrainians have crossed the Oskil River towards Svatore which is a main supply route for Russians.

I realise it is still Maori Language Week and perhaps our Journalists have taken their focus away from everyday English, but I would expect they knew how to spell common words.

Along is not the same as a long and where as does not mean whereas.

In that time the three of them say that kapa haka and te reo Māori has come along way but there’s still lots of mahi to be done.

“You were lucky if you had one Māori tutor in a school and they had to do the whole school, where as now you’ve got so much more choice but we don’t have enough te reo Māori speaking people to choose the best we can to further the reo,” Poa said.

You stole our land and now you are stealing our language. Its one step away from being rascist to speak Maori.

Of course it shouldn’t be compulsory. Show me how my kids learning it will help their education in the slightest (especially if it cuts into time spent on actual subjects), or how forcing the language on people will bring one Maori family out of poverty.

Compulsory or not it’s almost the dominant language at most primary schools already. I just can’t work out why…

  Of course English has been bastardised???
  In to Strine, Yank, Canadian, etc etc to try and reflect that difference in those different cultures.
  
  I would support the Minister(not just because of his name 🙂 but because it makes more sense to me to use the scarcity of good Te Reo teachers to strengthen that culture and language where it will have most effect. AND be most appreciated.
  
  eg Trying to teach an 11/12 year old white boy from a pommy family Te Reo is. INMHO an absolute waste of resource.

  “I would like to thank my parents, Ayan Rand and God.”, which the Oxford comma could clear up, could also be avoided if people used the colon more.
  
  If you really mean that your parents are Ayan Rand and God, then you could write something like the following:

The ranks closed rapidly. Anyone suggesting a lab leak was smeared and de-platformed, or punished in one form or another. But the narrative is unraveling.

Robert Redfield was the former head of the CDC. He spoke out early on, then went silent as the information gatekeepers did their thing. However he was interviewed recently and what he’s saying is alarming on a number of vectors.

“Tony and I are friends, but we don’t agree on this at all,” Redfield told me. “The potential for conspiracy is really on the other side. The conspiracy is Collins, Fauci, and the established scientific community that has acted in an antithetical way to science.”

Speaking with me from his home in Baltimore, Redfield said that evidence in favor of a lab accident in China continues to accumulate and he expects more classified information to become public

how did we go from “lockdowns are crazy and do not work” to “lock down to save to world” in a matter of 2 weeks? who actually drove that and who made the decisions and why? it was certainly not based in science. so what was it? politics? money? foreign influence? panic? how was everyone whipped into perfect synchrony on this issue like well drilled rockettes?

how did we lose the idea that “testing asymptomatic people using high Ct PCR is a terrible idea that will generate reams of faulty data” and instead kick off a testing complex worth a $1 billion a week in the US alone at some points? whose idea was that?

how did masks go from “these don’t work, don’t protect you, don’t stop spread and here’s a ream of WHO and other data that says so” to “if you don’t mask up, you’ll kill every grandma and teacher alive!” overnight?

why were safe, possible effective treatments eliminated and excoriated in unprecedented fashion to the point of outright bans while junk drugs that failed their trials were whisked through on shoddy studies and after the fact endpoint alteration?

this is not a set of questions we can afford to get half-assed answers on.

without a thorough understanding of the root causes and culprits here, this WILL happen again over any one of 100 pretexts.

Good on Hawkes bay for defending it 14 times. They have the 3rd best record with defences after Auckland and Canterbury.

Hug your lightbulb.

South Africa is currently on “stage 5” load shedding with most people having no power for 8 hours a day (granted, there are many people who have never had power, but that’s another matter).

It has been predicted by their power utility, Eskom, that they will have load shedding for over 300 days in the next 12 months. Of course, as things get worse, the one year of badness is looking quite optimistic.

That “load shedding” is in addition to “load reduction” where the grid cannot carry enough electricity in some areas. This is mainly in places like Soweto where some people have added their own connections and are not paying for the electricity they use. While there might only be a low % of bad apples, the entire region is impacted. Some areas go without power for weeks on end.

It is also in addition to what they call a “virtual power station”. Lovely Lefty wordplay for telling large industrial customers like smelters to turn off their loads. Somehow they make that sound like production. Perhaps they all went to business school with Robbo.

Reliable generation has decreased from about 36 to 40GW twenty years ago to struggling to provide only 25-30GW. This despite massive spending over the last 5 years on renewable follies. The emphasis of Eskom is to provide a conduit to rip off the coffers – not actually provide electricity.

Now if that sounds bad, then consider that South Africa only has about 5% of the population of the whole of Africa, but produces 2/3 of the electricity.

Hen Pecked Harry has managed to whinge his way into being allowed to wear his fancy “it’s all about me” uniform at his Grandmother’s Lying in State.
Even though he is not now in the military and resigned as a working member of the Royal family because his missus didn’t like it.
Harry might do well to have a read of what happened to his ancestor King Edward V111 when he abdicated in favour of the “woman he loved.”
Both of them spoilt, needy boys.

  To be fair to Harry, he did two tours in Afghanistan. Yes, being a former soldier doesn’t entitle him to wear a uniform. But it must grate when he sees his Uncle Edward and Aunt Anne decked out in full regalia.
  
  Same goes for Andrew, who took part in the Falklands War.
  
  Ironically, the two in the family who’ve actually fought for the Queen are the two who were told they couldn’t walk in uniform.

    Yep- Princess Anne has not served in the operational sense AFAIK.
    But she is a Royal Navy Admiral, attaining that rank in 2012.
    British Army General – 2020 and Air Chief Marshall.
    She has many other military titles both in the UK and across the Commonwealth including Colonel in Chief of the Royal NZ Army Nursing Corps.
    She is also the Royal who clocks up the most attendances, visits and commemorations annually.
    Think I’d be relying on her before some of the others.

  If I remember correctly, this is the speech that got him branded as a racist, and likely played a large part in his deplatforming from Massey.
  It’s pretty incredible that a speech about treating people on a needs basis rather than on the colour of their skin got him branded as a racist.
  What else was in there? Equal voting rights, settling grievances against Maori. All very dangerous stuff, apparently.
  I find it unbelievable that it’s even possible for our current govt. to be able to destroy our democracy, let alone want to. I dread to think how attempts to unwind what our govt. are doing will be portrayed to us by MSM.

I’ve never seen so many different sectors so unhappy with their work conditions under a government. Doctors, Nurses, Police, Fire, now Military.

Personnel are leaving our Defence Force in record numbers.

With many being lured away by better pay and conditions, the attrition rate is the highest it’s been in decades.

The Chief of the Defence Force told Newshub it could take up to a decade to replace highly-skilled staff and he needs Government help now.

A strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan on Sunday, toppling at least one building and trapping two people inside and knocking part of a passenger train off its tracks at a station.

The magnitude 6.8 quake was the largest among dozens that have rattled the island’s southeastern coast since Saturday evening, when a 6.4 quake struck the same area.
