    What is it with apologies in this country? Almost every day, someone’s calling for an apology about something.
    Apologies are cheap and easy to give and at the end of the day, they mean fuck all. Just look at Hipkins’s last one, he was reading from a script given/written for him by someone else not associated in any way with the action being apologised for.
    IMO, the individual should be charged with slander in the Hipkins case and if such an offence, if found guilty, constituted a jail term exceeding two years (I think), he should have lost his job.
    There are many more such instances committed by this Govt that require similar action but the public still calls for apologies.

    Are National going to take the police and the commissioner of police to court over their fraudulent “stolen vehicle” claim regarding the 2 woman falsely accused of providing false information to get a Covid Border crossing permit.
    
    Surely now that a FOI request has brought this to light a prosecution is the first order of the day. The second order being to put in a FOI request for every other time the police have used this fraudulent tactic to track citizens.
    
    I no longer feel safe in my own country knowing that the police can, without due process and fraudulently gain information on my movements in this way.
    
    The 3rd action should therefore be to put in legislation that the police can only access this information with a search warrant and reasonable cause. Additionally the right to hold the digital recordings must be cut back to 48 hours again as the current 12 months allows private companies to retain information of my movements without my knowledge, which is a breach of my human rights and conflicts with a number of international agreements on the retention of personal information.

This was sent to me by a friend, and oh, how true . . .
Last night I watched the late Queen’s funeral service and procession. While I am not a radical Royalist, this to me was an example of pure theatre and pageantry with a lineage of more than 2000 years of societal development. Even the church was more than 1000 years old.
Compare that to our New Zealand situation where we are being asked to put all that culture to one side, in favour of one advocated by a minority group whose only connection is that they are able to list a tribal ancestor, no matter how much diluted in their individual makeup. The culture we are being asked to recognise, as recently as 200 years ago, had no written language, engaged in cannibalism and slavery, had not invented the wheel, metal smelting or even basic pottery. They survived on violence, myth and legend, and had no concept of any basic sciences – mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology.
I cannot fathom the arrogance of these tribal people who persist in the myth that their ‘culture’ is somewhat superior to British culture, and that it has been damaged by colonialism.

Some of those hottie neanderthal women apparently got knocked up by the invading Homo sapiens as they swept through Europe wiping them out.     IIRC he called Maori society pre colonisation “stone age”. The problem is that the term is seen as an insult.
    
    Of course, its literal meaning is the period during which homo sapiens relied on stone tools. It preceded the bronze age during which humans discovered metal smelting. In turn this enabled a significant lift in the crafting of sophisticated tools.

        There were plenty of bronze-age cultures that were illiterate. And slavery was a hallmark of just about every pre-enlightenment culture. (Cannibalism not so much.)
        
        Archaeologists divide the stone age into the Palaeolithic and the Neolithic. There is nothing older than the Palaeolithic for humans. Pottery is a Neolithic invention. The wheel originated in the early bronze age (copper age) in Mesopotamia.
        
        Maori were basically Neolithic as far as I can tell. In some ways they were more advanced – they had rudimentary agriculture for example.

        Most of the time humans have been around was the paleolithic. The neolithic only came about since the end of the last ice age. Agriculture, pottery, animal domestication, stone polishing. Then the beginnings of metallurgy, the wheel, early writing systems and other tech.
        
        Polynesians did have some of these but for some reason lost the knowledge of pottery. They would be correctly described as a neolithic society meaning “new stone age”.

        I don’t think the hate speech legislation will be back in this term of government. It was unpopular to start with and both Faafoi and Ardern did us the favour of messing up the publicity so badly that it became a massive liability.
        
        There are some things, like three waters and compulsory unemployment insurance, that Labour seem determined to go to the wall over. But I don’t think hate speech is one of those things.
        
        As implacably opposed as I was and remain to that legislation, it would be kind-of good if they did try again. It would turn likely defeat in 2023 into nearly certain rout.
        
        Unlike some of Labour’s other ruinous policies, hate speech legislation would be a doddle to repeal. And Seymour would insist on it being gone by lunchtime before agreeing to support a National-led government. So, I’d be prepared to put up with it for a few months if it meant seeing Labour utterly buried next year.

Note her passion for the “Christchurch Call” which is a too-convenient excuse for internet censorship.     There’s probably no-one left who doesn’t have at least one non-Maori ancestor, but passing on DNA seems to be a bit more random – you get half of yours from each of your parents, but it doesn’t follow that your children have one quarter from each grandparent. I think one of the TV presenters did a DNA test and found out basically all her DNA was Maori, even though she knew she had non-Maori ancestors as well.

      However, because there has been a random allocation of chromosomes during the formation of sex cells, it does not follow that a grandchild receives exactly a quarter of the genes that define the

Well it’s more serious than that, I’m afraid. This breaks the social contract between government and the people. The state has the monopoly of force. We give up our right to use force with the expectation the state will maintain law and order.

If the state and the police can’t or won’t maintain law and order the social contract is broken. Surely giving the shop owner the right to defend himself and his property would be better? What about security guards that are trained and licensed to use force? At the moment security guards do not intervene to stop these incidents.

Should we rethink our attitudes to guns? At the moment only criminal gangs appear to have guns. Maybe we need armed responsible citizens to restore order?

As it is there is no solution in the offing. Labour is not changing, the police are not changing, nothing is going to change. If anything it will only get worse.
The lack of urgency to restore law and order is infuriating.

    It’s an effective propaganda tactic – painting reasonable opposition as extremists (far right, nazis, racists etc). There would be a lot of value in adopting it in political discourse – eg if all NAt and Act MPs were to start referring to greens as ‘far left greens’ and also a lot of left wing commentators and ‘journalists’ in NZ as “far left” or “Extreme left”. Over time it would have a big impact on general public if they came to associate left wing parties, pundits and commentators subconsciously as “far left” and therefore extreme. The sheeply population want to be one of the crowd, adopting common beliefs for psychological reasons (fitting in is a strong drive) and so are put off by the unpopularity implied by “far”.
    
    This is what has been done by the left to Act on the right over the last 10-20 years to marginalise them

A good essay – The Great Unvaxxed – Lies, Damned Lies and the BBC. I know quite a few unvaxxed who have been subjected to the gaslighting and abuse so elegantly described by the author.

Reliable data analysis of vaccine efficacy is highly dependent on reliable estimates of the population of vaccinated versus unvaccinated people. Professor Norman Fenton, a mathematician by training and Professor of Risk Information Management at Queen Mary University of London, has been looking into this for some time now. On 12th August, he released a short bombshell of a video that puts yet another nail in the coffin of the UK Government’s vaccine data analysis.

For me, one key take-home from Professor Fenton’s exposé of the BBC’s latest propaganda stunt is that science and statistics are simply tools. Like all tools they are subject to good-faith use and bad-faith abuse. A hammer in the hands of a reliable builder will dependably drive nails into floorboards. But hammers are also used by thieves to smash car windows. The BBC is a propaganda machine, and a statistic placed anywhere in a BBC narrative is guilty until proven innocent.

Vaccinated versus unvaccinated statistics have been wielded as a tool in an information war where the unvaccinated have been comprehensively dehumanised as a tiny minority of deviant ignoramuses and scapegoated as a threat to society greater than Al Qaeda and Isis. Statistics have been abused in bad faith to gaslight the unvaccinated into believing that they are part of a triflingly small band of idiots, trifling enough that no-one would miss them if the majority decided to dispense with them. At the height of the spittle-flecked fury directed at the unvaxxed, the message of Fleet Street Fox and other hateful demagogues was clear – it would be wise for the unvaccinated to wave a white flag in the battle to retain sovereignty over their bodies. And, paradoxically, science under the banner of progressivism was enlisted for this hate campaign.

It is quite conceivable that a society in thrall to a data-driven technocracy could dispense with 25% of its population on the grounds that this ‘backward’ segment refuses to bow to the diktats of biomedical technocracy and is therefore impeding society’s Great Leap Forward to technocratic utopia. It’s been done before, and we don’t appear to have learned many lessons.

  I am a scientist, which means I have a scientific training and approach to analysis. But more, I have some training in statistics (to second year uni) which is vastly more than most researchers ever encounter.
  
  Therefore I can make a valid observation on the way statistics have been used (and abused) and can therefore make some observations on the validity of the findings.
  
  If a hammer has been used as a screwdriver, then the cabinet has been built wrongly. You don’t need to be an expert carpenter to understand that.
  
  Statistics is an extremely non-intuitive discipline. Even those with PhDs in statistics have often not built an intuitive “feel” for how it works. I, with 2nd year stats under my belt, don’t rate myself an expert in stats by any means, but I do have a basic grasp. Unfortunately very few people using statistical methods as part of their research have any understanding whatsoever.

  …not at all helpful to a Government struggling with the problem of what to do with citizens who refuse to acknowledge either the validity of “The Science”, or their obligations to the collective welfare of the society in which they live.
  
  After all, the proudly vaccine resistant – the so-called “anti-vaxxers” – cannot even point to a brutalised upbringing in poverty as the explanation for their selfishness. In the avowed and proud anti-vaxxer, the state is confronted with the sort of reckless solipsism that it is actually dangerous to ignore.
  
  In resolving these dilemmas, the Vaccination Certificate emerges as the only viable vector for the virtues of both the Carrot and the Stick.
  
  If all it takes is a couple of more-or-less painless shots in the arm to gain admission to the footy and the most fashionable music festivals, then WTFN?
  
  For older New Zealanders the looming possibility of “No Jab. No Job” should also hurry along the stragglers. Though pointedly left out of the Prime Minister’s Friday speech, “No Jab. No Job” is only a fast-tracked parliamentary bill away from further arming the authorities against the uncooperative minority.
  
  They (government) have a whole raft of concerns over and above the paranoid fantasies of anti-vaxxers to consider. There are people whose mental fragility is fast becoming critical.

  That she (Ardern) is now reaching – however tentatively – for “The Stick” is incontrovertibly the correct moral choice.
  
  These are astonishing comments. They don’t age well.
  One thing he said at the end that was accurate, though not in the way he intended, was this:
  
  our democratically-elected government has both the right and the duty to protect the New Zealand people from harm. Indeed, the safety of the people is its supreme duty. Those whose conduct threatens the safety of the people cannot be located anywhere else but in the wrong.
  
  He’s correct. But the “safety of the people” was put at risk by Ardern, Hipkins, Bloomfield, Baker and the host of other “experts” and media shills who drove and enabled this experiment. They are in the wrong. They need to admit it. Now. Then we need a Royal Commission to identify the perpetrators and hold them to account.
  
  I would like to know if, due to the now available evidence re the failures of covid policies, has he changed his position. If not, why?
  
  I don’t wish to berate or harass Trotter, I don’t need an apology. I’d like him to acknowledge that he got it badly wrong.

So Julie-Ann Genter has criticised Heather du Plessis Allan for ‘bullying’ a teen climate activist on air. If the teen was supporting a cause not supported by Julie-Ann then presumanly Julie-Ann would think it was a great joke.
It clearly shows that leaders of groups arranging protests etc need to be on the top of their game, get their facts straight and have a sound knowledge and understanding of their issues. They also need to be able to handle questions that touch on the inherent hyprocrisy of their positions.This teen and her mates are obviously being manipulated by adults and were little more than ventriloquists’ dummies. And HDPA went straight for the jugular.
HDPA has given her a valuable life lesson, which although she does not appreciate it now she will find it valuable for the future.

    Funny that, when you consider in the Auckland region, passenger numbers are 0.57 passengers per bus in-service km (this number is from the 2021-22 Auckland Bus contract league table).

    I have some sympathy for the girl; she’s at an awkward age – too old to be a child, but too young to be a truly independent adult.
    
    In defence of Sam Uffindell just recently, some here pointed out that young people do dumb things which they grow out of; there are worse things than hypocrisy, and cognitive dissonance, which du Plessis-Allan rightly pointed out.
    
    I reserve my principal scorn for the mother, who supports her daughter’s climate concerns, but still went to Fiji, and Genter, who supports lowering the voting age but resists treating the girl as an adult.
    
    Still, if the daughter wants to swim at the adult end of the pool, she will be treated as an adult.

Winston on “3 Waters”
In a recent speech in Tauranga, Winston Peters, on “3 Waters” said –

Labour’s Three Waters policy is an intricate deceit.
They have taken people’s concerns for healthy water supply and use, which has exercised local body politicians for decades in this country, and used it by stealth and spin to simply steal the public’s assets.

But while Winston says “Labour’s Three Waters policy is an intricate deceit”, he doesn’t really nail how “intricate”, he seems just stuck where many others are, in indignation at the “indigenous” control of the Four Entities – while Nania Mahuta’s sister, Ms Pita Mahuta (already appointed) chairs the Maori Advisory Council (already established) which controls Taumata Arowai (the new Water Regulator, fully operational from mid-November, last year) which will control the Four Entities and their iwi input – with some legislation passing through Parliament currently, without the nation-wide non-Maori “conversation” Jacinda Ardern promised on “co-governance”.

This is the “racist, undemocratic, unmandated” policy Winston calls a “Velvet Glove, a modern Trojan Horse”, but is it a show pony distraction to Mahuta’s real top level “tyranny” (Willie’s word) of power.

Winston only emphasises what we already know – the plan of “co-governance” at the “3 Waters” Four Entities level – old news.
But not what is Checkmate with Pita Mahuta and the Maori Advisory Council at the already established top or sharp end of “3 Waters“.

If not, what the hell does the Maori Advisory Council do?

Winston condemned UN Security Council Resolution 2334 for being made “Outside of Cabinet” but never really revealed that New Zealand’s Resolution was the Islamic nation Egypt’s rejected Resolution, with 13 clause numbers added by McCully’s team – we got part of the story, but not the whole story.

Now, with “3 Waters”, New Zealanders could do with the whole story.

And for those who would quote Napoleon Bonaparte, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake”, when does that become “If it was so bloody important, why did you not mention it at the time?”
If National starts now, it should last well into next year, and the Election.
“Co-governance” is big enough to split the country apart.
Unless Jacinda throws it out of the cot, and she may need Christmas and New Year and the Wedding, to think about that.
National should be helping her – relentlessly.

    Hmm, I reckon the easiest cure for anxiety is to stop being be anxious? And virtually everyone gets anxious about something at some point in their life. School exams, opening the batting against Richard Hadlee, first few times speaking in front of a large audience, skiing that near vertical chute, crossing that ice covered rock face, landing a plane on a road after being stuck in a wind shear, being caught in a rip that takes you a km off shore.   Surely the ordinary Police should be providing this service. UK has a separate ‘Transport Police’ which has full policing powers but this has to be seen in the context that UK has a multiplicity of geographically based police forces who cannot attend properly to trains, stations, etc. Also UK population is vastly greater than NZ. It seems Auckland Transport is merely proposing to hire security guards and branding them as ‘Transport Police’ but this branding could be unlawful (unless the Police Commissioner was prepared to swear them in as special constables). As public transport is subsidised perhaps part of this subsidy money should go to the Police to provide policing and safety services on the commuter trains similar to the special allocation the Police receive for road safety policing.

The Pfizer CEO, Albert Bourla, has just tested positive for Covid for a second time. He’s heavily vaccinated and no doubt double masked. Isn’t it great that we have an effective vaccine and masks that work. 🙂

    I was until six years ago living in Australia. The pull of “home” was strong (not to mention the impossibility of my becoming an Australian citizen) so back across the ditch. We’d heard a lot about the rock star economy, and the worst things they could mention on Oz news was a flag referendum (at least we got to chose! Who voted for “Aotearoa”?) or perhaps the then PM pulling on a waitress’s ponytail.
    I do wonder now if we made the right decision. I am having second thoughts about mall shopping etc. Crime seems out of control and as often mentioned there are no perceptible consequences for those that do get caught.
    Won’t somebody please step up and take charge again!

    THIS. So utterly sick of hearing Covid blamed for everything. Covid wasn’t a neuro pathogen that infected the brains of business owners and made them unable to run their businesses. The government closed businesses by force and millions lost their jobs. Covid wasn’t a crop blight or livestock disease that decimated wheat, grain, cattle herds etc. and caused agricultural, meat and dairy prices to skyrocket. Government lockdowns disrupting global supply chains did that. Apart from a higher death toll than a bad flu season, all the economic chaos, healthcare failures, mental suffering and social upheaval has been caused (some would say “engineered”) by governments.

Is this a Government that is handcuffed to Union and Maori Policy because you can see the division in Co Governance and Three Waters Policy but now the Council of Tarde Union wants in with there new plan to spend more of Taxpayers money.
Another Union Boss Craig Renney sets out a plan to spend Taxpayers money with creating a State Run Investment Bank, establish a “Ministry of Green works,” and tril a four day week at scale, these are just some of the ideas the Trade Union of Council (CTU) is floating with the public as Election Year approaches.
The strategy was co- authored by the CTU’s Craig Renney ( a economic advisor to Finance Minister Grant Robertson in the last term of Government) and Diana Russell.

Also he says the only way to assuage Maori anger isn’t equality it’s equity. Seems he’s saying Maori can’t compete on an equal footing.

John Key made some good points on retaining the monarchy which I agree with. Electing or appointing a president would be a massive debate in itself.

Republican debates should be public opinion driven not by media and special interest groups and clearly the majority of Nzers aren’t interested in it.

The Reserve Bank governor Orr quoted on world inflation rates at the interest-dot-co web site: “In a ‘relative’ sense New Zealand is in an excellent position.”

Not sure what the Interest web site reporter means by putting relative in single quotes. Did Orr really say relative, or is the reporter signalling that Orr used a different tone when he said the word?

  Staff numbers up 78% over four years from 255 to 454.
  
  Economic staff numbers down 2% from 34 in 2013 to 32.

      Not many other options down south. Veggieboys used to be good for vegies, but not anymore. Butchers are as common as hen’s teeth and not cheaper than supermarkets.

Such a statement would have been unconscionable in the middle of Jacinda’s “zero covid” strategy – remember that, the one that cost billions and billions and was going to set us apart from the world?   China’s Zero Covid policy remains very much in place while others, notably New Zealand’s, have been suddenly and embarrassingly abandoned. Jacinda Ardern’s statement “We just need to respect everyone’s individual decisions” with regard to ongoing mask-wearing is laughable from someone who sacked state employees who took the individual decision not to be vaccinated.

    Correct KK. He took the double jab and encourage others to do some … now the evidence is mounting he is starting to rethink things. Acting like a scientist and adjusting his stance based on evidence.
    
    Refreshing isn’t it.
    
    For me personally though I want to know why so many in the medical fraternity just blinded accepted the vaccines with so little in terms of trial data to go on.
    
    Limited trial data and no longer term data (3 plus year trial data) coupled with a view the virus wasn’t that serious for the healthy under 65s was where my resistance to taking the jab came from.
    
    I suspect there will be a crisis of conscience in the medical fraternity sometime in the next couple of years IF they are prepared to look at the actual data from the colossal trial that has occurred in the Western world with these vaccines…

The English rugby team has looked to the US Navy’s crack special operations unit, the SEALs, for ideas on preparing for the World Cup.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Eddie Jones, the England coach, recently spent “a fascinating couple of days” with the SEALs in San Diego to glean a better understanding of helping players “to cope with the unexpected” as cards, head injury assessments, and refereeing interpretations influence every match.

Jones used Operation Neptune Spear, which was carried out by the Navy SEALs in 2011 despite a helicopter crash-landing, as an analogy for England’s preparations.

The SMH reports England will hold a “mini hell week” in Jersey ahead of the autumn internationals against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.

The newspaper says Jones suggested that Ireland and France were “nose and nose” at the top of the international scene. South Africa and New Zealand sat third and fourth, with England nestled in behind them.

The acronym-name of the US Navy’s SEALs seems to come from “Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL)” teams.

  He does not have a high opinion of them. Maybe Jones should have gone closer to home, Poole in Dorset, and looked at the SBS. Motto is ” Not by Strength, By Guile”

    The US Navy is investigating the brutal selection course for SEALs after the death this year of a sailor who had been an elite college athlete, reports the New York Times.
    
    It says his death led to revelations of physical abuse, poor medical oversight and use of performance-enhancing drugs in the selection course.
    
    Seaman Kyle Mullen, 24, by the end of the punishing third week of the course was reportedly exhausted, riddled with infection, and coughing blood from lungs.
    
    He slogged on, his condition ignored by those running the course and by medics.
    
    At the end of the week he died. Three others from the course were admitted to hospital.
    
    The newspaper says at least 13 sailors have died on the course since 1953.
    
    It’s alleged that candidates who suffered serious injuries and illnesses saw illicit performance-enhancing drugs as the only way to complete the course.

  The school shooting in In Russia yesterday was in Izhevsk, the home town of Mikhail Kalashnikov, famous for developing the AK47 family of rifles.
  
  There is a Kalashnikov arms museum in the central-Russian city, which is sometimes publicised as the armoury capital of Russia.
  
  A gunman carrying pistols and with a swastika on his T-shirt killed 13, including seven children, and wounded more than 20 other people. Then he committed suicide.
  
  Mmm…. A city that’s an arms centre, and then there are the locals. Many have a feature that is sometimes, facetiously, alleged to indicate short temper.
  
  Izhevsk is the capital of Udmurtia, on the edge of the Urals, which separate European Russia from Asian Russia. This region rivals Ireland and Scotland in high proportion of red-haired people.
  
  The indigenous Udmurts are a Finnic-group people, though now a minority to ethnic Russians in Udmurtia. Tatars are another minority in the region.
  
  In some Urmurt villages the proportion of people with red hair is said to be as high as 70 per cent.
  
  Meanwhile, what about the other hot spot for gingers — the British Isles?
  
  This 2013 report from and Irish newspaper link suggests that south-east Scotland is slightly ahead of Ireland in proportion of redheads.

US elections have a few issues it seems. Gavin Newsom’s new bill will give state ID to undocumented immigrants.

This follows ““follows a controversy in the state in 2018 in which 1,500 people were improperly registered to vote in California by the DMV, including non-citizens. Then-California Secretary of State Alex Padilla (D), who is now a U.S. Senator, said he did not know if any of those registered had voted in the state’s June 2018 primary election.”

Hmmmm. Maybe the systems not as robust as it could be.

Charges against prominent conservative be anti-mandate protestor dropped, Newstalkzb reports.

If you accuse someone of obstruction and trespassing and it’s reported across the media, they then send him home whom and ban them from parliament grounds. And now the charges are dropped. Is that enough. Shouldn’t the police and media apologise. Shouldn’t he be compensated for his time and stress defending charges that the police subsequently drop presumably because they don’t have evidence to support them.
