  And the Daily Mail rag libels Peterson by calling him “right-wing” and trivialises or negates many of his points, most of which are 100% correct. Such as “he claimed that the gender pay gap was not ‘only due to sex'” which it isn’t.
  
  His defence of free speech in Canada regarding compelled use of pronouns under threat of prosecution was a brave and principled move, and a host of other things under the heading: “Peterson’s past scandals on gender, race and masculinity”

    We in the southern hemisphere are slightly protected. We do not have the wide temperature swings that the northern hemisphere does.
    
    But keeping warm in winter is only a tiny part of the battle. NZ has always been a trading nation. If our trading partners are in turmoil then we cop it too.

So a guy is released on parole after serving 7 years for a violent rape. He is assessed as “high risk of violent reoffending”.

He is housed next door to a young, beautiful woman living alone. She is aware that he is watching her. She is scared. However she has not been notified that he is a convicted rapist. 🙄🙄

Within a few weeks she is dead in a horrific attack.

“…. chief probation officer Darius Fagan said Corrections would review its existing notification policy “to ensure it continues to support public safety”.” 😳 😰

Why am I not reassured? ☹️

    According to the report, the young woman was aware the guy was watching her. If she had been aware he was a convicted rapist she could have run for the hills.
    
    I also wonder what someone does when they get told “just a heads up, there is a convicted rapist next door to you and he is at high risk of reoffending” 😳. There is no appropriate mitigation apart from immediately relocating.

      Your opinion only works IF the parole board were all employed post 2017. It is just as possible that they were employed under Chris Finlayson’s watch.
      
      Do you have any proof that they were all employed post 2017?
      
      Also, do you have any proof that the AG directed the parole board to make any decisions?
      
      Or that the Labour government changed the law to make the parole board make a different decision to what they would have made under the previous government?
      
      Or are you just looking for somebody to take the fall for something awful that happened? That would be understandable, but not really the right thing.

  The fact that he served nearly his full sentence for his original offence (remember Labour’s promise to empty the prisons) indicates that the system considered him very dangerous. In the press report from the time of his rape conviction, there is no mention of whether he had strikes recorded against him or his previous offences (if any)

    “He punched her on the head and body several times and when she tried to fight back, the defendant bound her hands. He then put his hands around the victim’s throat. Brider placed the victim in the passenger seat and drove to Waverley, where he stopped again and resumed his violent assault on the victim…..
    
    The victim suffered numerous injuries from the assault, including burst blood vessels in her eyes, bruising to the throat, injuries to her lower body and swelling and bruising to her left shoulder and arm.”

  It’s interesting that Ardern is calling for surveillance with her Christchurch call so she can have more information to stop extremism.
  
  But even when they know of extremism and it’s in plain sight, like the New Lynn terrorist, who they knew was making violent threats and likely to act on them, and this rapist they don’t use the information to stop further attacks.

  This whole story is a microcosm of the plight that New Zealand is in right now. The anodyne headline – “corrections reviewing policy”. As if there was some minor stuff up. That’s right, the media only gets outraged when national MPs do something wrong e.g. Uffindell.
  
  He was placed in a halfway house next to a beautiful woman living on her own? What’s with that? How can that make any sense? He goes to a dance class where there are lots of women. How can that be a good idea?
  
  Now that he has killed her, what should happen to him? I would argue for the death penalty. I think the death penalty would wonderfully concentrate the criminal mind and the number of murders in this country would plummet.
  
  As it says very early in the Bible in Genesis 9:5-6 “And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.”

    It’s more a case of convicted rapist (i.e. violent offender) is paroled despite being at a “high risk of re-offending”.
    
    Here’s an idea. Develop a small housing estate. One house for each Parole Board member in which they and their family must live. Add in 4 extra interspersed properties where the people they parole spend the first 6 months.
    
    That might distil their thinking a bit.

      Sure swiftly. We are made in the image of God which means that we share something of the likeness of God, we have a soul, we have dignity and worth because we share something of God’s essence. That does not mean that we are gods ourselves.
      
      Our image of God has been tarnished by sin, which is recorded in Genesis 3. That sin has been redeemed by Jesus, who was both fully God and fully man. He shows us what God is like. He also was the only man who did not sin.
      
      The dignity and worth of human beings created in the image of God means that we take seriously murder. We don’t take innocent human life. The sense is that human life is sacred. We also build hospitals to look after sick people. We have laws to protect people. Indeed we could argue that human rights makes sense because we are created in God’s image, we have intrinsic dignity and worth because of that.

        Swifty – that’s right. We don’t know what God looks like. We know Jesus as the son of God who was both human and divine. The Bible features angels which are human in appearance.
        On the other hand we have the divine creatures for example in Isaiah 6 that have six wings and the four beasts in Daniel 7 that are definitely not human in appearance.

        We should under no circumstances hand any government, and particularly Labour governments, the mandate or ability to murder the citizenry – for any reason.
        
        In Labour’s case they will of course fuck it up and start murdering the innocent – just like they fuck up everything else they touch.
        
        They can’t even get the basics right, they cant even organise the immunisation of our kids to the level that the Nats achieved – the crew they lambast as ‘rich’, out of touch and uncaring.

    The problem in this case is that he was sentenced to 7 years 9 months in prison. He was released on parole after 7 years. So he could have been kept in prison for only another 9 months. Then they would have been required to release him. No doubt he would have killed someone else in some other place, only 9 months later.

    This latest Hurricane is the first of the current season. For July and August they had NONE.
    3rd time in 60 years this has happened.
    Lastly, the number of people dying from these things has deceased also.

    It includes the townships of Norsewood, Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, Herbertville, Weber, Akitio and Alfredton.
    By its very nature it represents small town rural New Zealand.
    At an election meeting attention was drawn to the fact that Tararua District Council is responsible for seven drinking and waste water schemes.

    Ormsby has a conviction for assaulting a female.
    He pleaded guilty to that one charge…
    The Crown withdrew charges of indecent assault, sexual violation and assault with intent to commit sexual violation relating to another woman.
    
    Those withdrawn charges leave me uneasy…
    
    Perhaps Ormsby is just the man to be working at the Criminal Case Review Commission… but perhaps he isn’t.
    
    We do seem to have a history in NZ for employing folks without checking their backgrounds thoroughly.

      National broadcasting services exist for historical reasons. In the beginning, radio stations were expensive to set up and had short range, so many transmitters were needed.
      
      With the progress of electronics, it’s now far, far cheaper to set up, say, a regional radio station than it would cost to set up a comparable regional newspaper with printing plant. Free enterprise can be relied on to provide radio services.
      
      Second, Government owned radio has been used for propaganda from the beginning of the technology. Even the United States has the Government-owned Voice of America to project the American viewpoint overseas.
      
      With the Internet, and access to it ever easier and cheaper, State international radio propaganda is less useful.

        Yes, I think the institutions were much better for mentally ill people. They were not criminalised, and were not necessarily there permanently because they were receiving treatment, and to them, their place was among people much like themselves, so to them a ‘normal’ environment.
        After Helen Clarke closed them all down, we have those people now in many cases left to their own devices, constantly under stress because the world is to them not ‘normal’, and find themselves homeless, can’t fit into society, drug dependent, and committing crime.

    Incidentally, something similar is occuring in the education system.
    Much of the problem with teaching is the result of a lack of support for ‘problem’ pupils.
    In this context ‘problem’ includes the many syndromes that add to the complexity of teaching.
    There is far too little support in the classroom and that means that the disruptive pupils take up too much of the available time.
    Most cures of adult behaviours are best applied as early in childhood as possible.

        The biggest influence on the strength of $US at the moment is the global risk factor. The potential of Putin’s escalation in Ukraine and the talk of recession causes a ‘flight to safety’. You must know something the bond markets don’t know because right now I can buy 10 yr $ US treasury bonds at 3.782% yield while the govt $NZ 10 yr bond is yielding 4.24%. According to your argument the $NZ should be rising against the $US not falling.

        Primary producers get the last cut of in the value supply chain, so once, processors, transporters, wholesalers, governments and retailers have taken their cut which normally gives them a minimum 15% ROI, the primary producers get what is left. Over time they can normally expect a 2-5% ROI.

  You should get Shingrix … it is a really good preventative treatment for shingles and it is no surprise that sales are growing. My partner’s sister had shingles several years back, and it was awful. Problem is that it does cost a bit.

Now that questions are finally being asked about the corruption and nepotism of all the Mahuta family appointments, maybe it’s time for questions about the Sroubek affair.
Arden was implicated in the bypassing of immigration regulations to get a convicted drug dealer and passport fraudster , New Zealand Residence.
We know this because Arden was publically thanked for her intervention by Srobeks , mate and business partner Richie Hardcore.
Arderns only excuse was that anyone could send her a text, although I’m yet to find anyone who has her cell number.
Clearly Hardcore has info on Ardern that wouldn’t go well with the public.
Why then did he get appointed to a Government committee.
A payoff to keep him quiet.?
On top of this the Minister of Immigration at the time , Leigh’s – Galloway got sacked and is out of parliament.
Questions need to be asked .
Is Ardern covering her dirty, sordid tracks?

Ram raid: Merivale shops hit in a early morning raid.
A camera shop in the upmarket suburb of Merivale was the target of a ram raid early this morning. Police were called to Papanui Road about 5.00 am.
The store is upstairs in Melvile Mall on Papanui Road.
Manager of Photo and Video International Greg Bramwell said a black wagon was driven straight through the front glass doors and a second set of doors.
Bramwell said it was the forth time his store had been ram raided in 30 years.
” The other 3 times were in the ’90s 93 or 95.

… Until recently, most Chinese language speakers here spoke Cantonese – this is changing rapidly with a new wave of migrants.

It was disturbing to watch Karen Chhour’s evident distress after that appalling and unprovoked personal attack from Kelvin Davis. Disturbing too to watch Willie Jackson literally licking his lips in gleeful support.
And then Kelvin Davis and his hollow apology which he managed to make all about him before turning away with a smirk on his face.
Racism. Misogyny. Bullying. Elitism. Arrogance.
A deeply shocking episode that Arden virtually brushed aside.
I am trying not to over-react but it seems to me like a terrifying glimpse into the race-based dystopia looming over us.

Can I dare hope our small army of women writers like Alison Mau who avidly leap on any National misdemeanour might turn their attention to the elitism, arrogance and cruelty of senior Labour cabinet ministers?
The verbal attack on Karen Chhour was appalling. I find it almost impossible to express how deeply it has affected me.
I hope Mau and others will apply their writing skills to help ensure this never happens again.

  I would suspect that Ardern is only in the top job still as she is still polling as preferred PM and that alone. The rest of it she has no control over hence out of control MP’s as they know they are in control and not her. I suspect Ardern avoids conflict at any cost within her own party too.

Can you bloody imagine driving on long straight roads in Canterbury at 80 kmh? 🙁

Targeted reductions where justified? No problem. Last weekend I drove to Akaroa. The 100 limits have been reduced to 80 and in some cases 60. I surprised myself in that I agreed with the changes. There was carnage on that road over the last few years.

But across the country? If the Government goes there just watch them justify it because of the “climate crisis”.

    5th most-spoken language in the World.
    It’s an official/National language in at least 31 countries.
    
    Less than 0.1M speak Te Reo Maori.

      I look at the Icelandic language… 400k people speak it, really, not that many.
      
      But, television and movies, and business etc are causing Icelanders to use english more and more. It makes me wonder if Icelandic will one day just disappear. They do have a department of Icelandic language that invents new words in iceland to match new english words, but, maybe, just delaying the inevitable?
      
      Once the current generation of old people pass, pretty much everyone in Iceland will speak english as a second language .

        There are numerous languages throughout Europe that are useless elsewhere.
        How many countries speak Flemish, Danish, Dutch, Welsh,
        Why don’t they all speak English?
        Because it’s not part of their culture.
        I know Kiwis & Aussies who have lived in Thailand for decades and speak fluent Thai, but when they talk to each other they use English because there’s something about your own language that doesn’t translate.

      To learn Arabic, you have to learn a new alphabet, and get used to reading from right to left. A lot of the sounds in the language are difficult for English speakers to master, and the grammar is packed with irregular verbs. Even if you manage to overcome all of that, it is also a language with many, many dialects that vary widely. So, you might be able to get by in Jordan, but have a hard time in Kuwait.

    Spanish. Spoken in all S America apart from Brazil and in Central America and large areas of the US.
    
    Spoken in the Philippines as well.
    
    Because it is a ” Romance” Language you can make yourself understood in French and Italian.
    
    I was in Argentina, Uruguay and S Brazil and I had a good understanding of French. If they spoke slowly or wrote it down, I could understand what they were saying. I was the Cargo Officer on a reefer ship at the time.

With just a week to go, only 8% of Aucklanders have bothered to vote. (And most of THEM have probably voted twice). They’re expecting the final turnout will be nothing short of….. ‘abysmal’.
