    2021 Public Service workforce survey – 4.4% over 65. Headcount 62,853. So nearly 3,000 drawing the pension and many also government super. They may of course be the most experienced and skilled, but if so also on big bucks. Time for the succession plan and save taxpayer money. There is a succession plan, of course. Right?

It strikes me that this Government is not socialist in the broad sense. ie Ownership of the means of production.

But facist.

A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Many decry capitalism, but it is the system that has raised more people from poverty than any other system.

I am reminded of the Humane ness of Capitalism verses the inhumanness of out current system

  A common misconception Ra, is that fascism is of the right (pre WW2 it was commonly accepted as of the left). The claim being exactly that which you have reproduced, namely “a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls”. There is no right wing ideology that espouses any government control of means of production. Socialism and fascism are of the left, just at differing degrees.

    Yes there is. It is called statism, where the means of production are to a large degree privately owned but its outcomes are subjugated to the needs and priorities set out by the state. Contemporary Singapore is one example. The Peoples Republic of China is another – while nominally communist, its economy is in fact statist. Hitler’s Germany economy was set up in pretty much the same way.

  Actually many do not. It is a deluded and fanatical minority.
  
  Real GDP per capita in Europe did not change for several centuries. 99 percent of the population lived a miserable existence and died young from 1000 AD through to the late 1800s. From 1880 GDP exploded following the mass use of coal and the steam engine, and the expansion of railways. Following the set back of WW1, capital markets flourished as did mass production. In 1990 China joined the party.
  
  There are literally no examples globally where a government with the policies of the current New Zealand government has made a country richer or fairer. It is exactly the opposite.

As the local body elections close today, we will see a vast swathe of Labour aligned councillors and Mayors elected….why? Well, I guess not why exactly as I kinda know the reason, the right do not contest mayoral elections with any gusto nor conviction/passion….again WHY?
When did National leaning (or right leaning in general) contenders decide to not even bother, was there a point in history where National decided to forgo local body elections and not endorse/promote any candidate and thus leave them all to be won be candidates who are predominantly Labour/Green affiliated?

  In contrast, National candidates commonly take a pay cut if elected.
  
  That might account for the fewer number of National-aligned candidates – their “day” job is more lucrative and does not involve their character being publicly assasinated by the media.

    Also, Efeso Collins – (Akld Mayoral Candidate). Labour to the core but standing as an independent (just like his predecessor Phil Goof). Noteworthy is that Lord (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor of Takapuna) and Cindy (aka NZ’s PM from hell) have come out and publically endorsed him.

So, if you’re living in Europe and there’s a serious chance that the heating gas might run out during winter, what do you do?

If you live in cities, you can’t go back to the old days of burning coal – the clean air legislation prevents that. Heat pumps aren’t that common, AFAIK. Do you just rug up? Spend the day at the public library? No more working from home, that’s for sure.

  Get a ULEB (ultra low emissions burner). Installed one in Autumn, does a solid 12 hour burn with a big heavy piece or two of hardwood. Keeps my 105m2 1975 built single glazed multi-level home (admittedly in Auckland) at a pleasant mid 20s all day, no cold spots. Can make coffee on the cast iron top, even did poppadoms to go with a curry on it the other week. Legislation currently allows you to install one basically anywhere in NZ. I understand the UK has seen a resurgence in sales, too. Bit more ambience than a heat pump, can’t think of any love songs that allude to turning the Fujitsu up to 25 degrees…

  Ireland, for example, which uses gas for electricity generation gets its supply locally and from Scotland.

I realise local government elections inspire low (and rapidly declining) turnouts, but it’s even worse in the race-based wards. In one area of eastern Bay of Plenty, there were zero votes in the race-based ward, although now it has spiked to a massive 25 votes out of 307 registered voters. That’s just over 8% of voters who took the time to register their preference to be on the race-based roll who can be arsed to vote.

I don’t believe the solution is to make voting mandatory; it’s to abolish race-based seats, which have no place in a modern multi-cultural society, once and for all.

  At these elections, six regional councils have separate Māori constituencies (up from two in 2019), totalling 12 seats and 18 candidates, six of whom (including Tipa Mahuta (Waikato) and Toi Iti (Bay of Plenty) have already been re-elected unopposed.
  
  Twenty-eight territorial authorities now have separate Māori wards (up from one in 2019), totalling 54 seats and 125 candidates, eight of whom are already elected unopposed (including two sitting councillors).
  
  Across the North Island (and in Marlborough and Nelson), the participation rate in the Māori wards and constituencies is well below that of the General wards and constituencies, the explanation for which involves more than the age-related fact that the percentage of Māori eligible to be enrolled is slightly lower than for non-Māori, or by a slightly lower rate of enrolment in any event.
  
  For example, as at last night—
  
  Far North: the three General wards 36.8%, Māori ward 24.4%
  Hamilton (as at Thursday night): the two General wards 25.9%, Māori ward 11.5%*
  Rotorua: Rural and General wards 44.5%, Māori ward 26.6%
  Gisborne: Tairawhiti General 36.6%, Tairawhiti Māori 23.5%
  
  * A factor here may be that there is no election for the two regional council Māori seats, the two candidates being re-elected unopposed.
  
  What we are likely seeing here is Māori on the Māori roll essentially being gifted representation, and therefore taking it for granted — they get their separate representation whether or not they vote.
  
  Compulsory voting is most definitely not the answer. I have done quite a lot of reading on this subject over the years, and would oppose (or at least indicate my opposition to) any move to introduce voter compulsion.
  
  This is a good paper on the subject (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2158244018817141), based on the case of Ecuador (where compulsory voting is strictly enforced by a system of sanctions), showing that compulsory voting has failed to safeguard more equal access to the political system for different socioeconomic groups.
  
  Compulsory voting would likely lead to an increase in informal voting, which would work against the interests of Māori. However, were compulsory voting ever to be introduced, its negative effects could be offset by requiring all regional and local councils to use PR/STV, either at-large (my preference), or in large constituencies/wards, e.g., Hamilton City, i.e., there would be no separate Māori representation. Theoretically, at least, that would incentivise Māori and other minority groups to vote, because they would each have a realistic chance of electing their proportional share of councillors.

      Agreed, but Māori miss out under the majoritarian (multiple-)FPP system, which is one reason why their participation rate is lower than for non-Māori, and also, of course, why they have pushed so strenuously for their own seats — well, at least for those on the Māori roll.
      
      Abolish separate Māori representation by all means, but also ensure fair, equal and proportional representation on councils for everyone by means of PR/STV.
      
      All people then need do, is vote!

        I’ll let you do your own research into the many failings of the (multiple-)FPP electoral system, Manu-Rau.
        
        However, I will say this. My comment was made in the context of abolishing separate Māori seats on local councils. FPP is a majoritarian voting system, which favours majorities. That is why National and Labour dominate single-seat elections.
        
        Māori are a minority group in our society, so, on the whole, will always be swamped by the non-Māori majority. That is one reason why STV should be mandated for all local elections (except, unfortunately, in Hutt City) as from the 2025 elections, to ensure, in an electoral environment where there is no separate Māori representation, that Māori have the electoral wherewithal to obtain fair, equal, and proportional representation on their local councils. But, of course, as I said, to get that, they, like everyone else, must vote!

“Hate speech” was mentioned the other day after Kelvin dropped a few remarks in Parliament, but that was not a case of “When you see it, you will know it”.
Kelvin’s comment were apparently just “rather personal”.

So, is someone in Government still trying to define what “unkind speech” is?
It seems to still be to do with “denigration of any faction or individual as to harm their wellbeing”

But should any definition not also cover the “over-positive selective treatment” – favour – of any faction so as to harm the remainder, to unbalance reality and national wellbeing, to incite division or undesirable social action?

I do appreciate how difficult such a definition must be to reduce to an internationally-praised bumper-sticker slogan and why we have not already had national conversation about it …

  Anyone outside of their bubble is wrong and needs correcting immediately, at all costs!. So how the left live with being the bully is thinking like they are taking one for the team for the greater good of the bubble. The left dont see their “enemy” as an equal but with different views.
  In their world its bit like someone with a real hatred of guns but having to use one to put a severely injured animal to sleep except it’s not guns its derision, racism false accusations and the target is anything or anyone outside of the Pa. Pa dogs the lot of them.

        He served as President of the Australian Conservation Foundation for ten years before being elected for the Labor Party as the Member of the House of Representatives for the seat of Kingsford Smith in the 2004 election.
        He had a massive falling out with Kevin (07) Rudd Aust Labour PM with the introduction of free Pink Batts Insulation when some installers were killed. Needless to say, he walked away from Politics.

Interesting reading about the 2023 census. looks like they are throwing sheds load of money at it to avoid the mess of 2018.

This caught my eye:

I am thinking what does the Treaty have to do with the census?

As I read through the explanation, I am really none the wiser. There are many grand phrases but I still do not know how, on the ground, this thing needs to comply with the Treaty. For example:

“We will prioritise initiatives supporting Māori participation in the census and engagement with the data ecosystem.”

Does the Treaty require the Crown to adopt specific measures to support Maori participation?

The problem with all this is that it just takes one activist to claim they were denied an opportunity for “engagement with the data ecosystem” and the demand redress.

It makes my head hurt.
