Tuesday night on the project they were remarking that the number of children born to unmarried parents exceeds the number born to married parents for the first time. As is typical of a leftist progressive show they got homosexual comedian Eli Mathewson to be the “expert” commentator. The left do not really believe in marriage, unless it is homosexual marriage.

I would think that a man marrying a woman and providing a permanent union to look after and provide for each other and any offspring that may ensue, would be a priority for the government. But it seems not.

Successive governments have provided benefits for unmarried mothers which means a woman does not need to marry anymore because the government will provide an income.

Now a couple does not need to marry because after a period of time they gain the same rights as married couples anyway. So it is no wonder that marriage is declining and children are now mostly being born out of wedlock.

Why should we care? Well there is a natural order, which I would say is God-given, and we are disrupting the natural order, the way we were created to be. Marriage provides the best place for the upbringing of the next generation. Our governments championing of cohabitating couples is a wrong move in my opinion. When an unmarried couple has a child, the chances of them being together when that child is 15 is about 10%.
The importance of a father to socialise particularly young males is well documented. Children growing up without a father are far more likely to end up in jail and generally have worse outcomes in life.

Those of us you that have got married, brought up your children, not relied on the government and pursued reasonably orderly lives are now in a minority. It seems that you need to work hard and pay your taxes so that the government can pay for the lifestyles of everyone else? We have a huge welfare state, which is getting ever bigger. Our children are struggling with anxiety, with food disorders and with the general chaos and crime that is more and more evident in our communities.

The best way to stand out today is to marry someone of the opposite sex, have children, look after your children, stay together and behave reasonably responsibly. In today’s “anything goes” society that is now a radical act.

  It would be enlightening to see how many of the young people involved in the Ram Raids have a positive male role model at home, or indeed any male role model at home.
  
  While it is possible for a young man to overcome the loss of a male parent (John Key was raised by a solo mother) many young people born out of wedlock go on to live lives of desperation, under-achievement and crime.
  
  A survey of our violent offenders WILL support the contention that Absent Fathers are a huge social problem.
  
  We have had, in the last 30-40 years, the de-stigmatising of children born outside a relationship. I wonder if we are now starting to see the reason behind the earlier social order.

    I attended a men’s breakfast with Andrew Becroft when he was Principal Youth Court Judge.
    
    One thing he said was that he had just finished a session in Whanganui, where almost 50 boys and young men appeared before him.
    
    Only one of them had a father playing an active role in his life.

    Slightly: I find it very significant that while Maori are hugely overrepresented in prison, PI’s are only slightly overrepresented – 16% of the population, and about 20% of the prison population. The reason IMO is obvious: PI parents – there is almost always two of them – are invariably married to each other. They know where their kids are all or at least most of the time, and more importantly, they care about what their kids are doing.
    
    Another major difference is PI’s highly value education, while many Maori deride educational success as “acting white”.
    
    I am currently in Tonga, and one of the things most noticeable here are the kids emerging from seriously sub-standard dwellings, in spotless school uniform, walking to school. They don’t have truancy officers because they don’t need to.

      Also, David, anyone who is an immigrant has self-selected for resilience, self-sufficiency and determination. While some of the scum from another country might make it out, most are too indolent or incapable.
      There was an interesting thing somewhere, Aus I think, where immigrants were the most opposed to illegal immigration. That’s because we done jumped through all the hoops, we know what – or often more accurately who – we are escaping from, and bugger them if they think they can just raft their way to paradise after we done it right, and tough.

    My sister and I both consider ourselves lucky to have been among the last generation of adoptees (early 70’s), raised in a loving family environment by 2 parents who both wanted & loved us, it wasn’t perfect my any means but so much better than the alternative.

    Jordan Peterson has observed, through decades of work as a clinical psychologist and a thorough study of the data (his and others), that the single most important predictive factor in whether young men will end up in prison or as productive members of society, is the presence of the father (or positive male role model, but mostly fathers) in the home.
    
    Of course there are outliers at both extremes, but in general if you have a father at home and engaged in your life you’re much less likely to end up in prison.

  Now, to paraphrase Candace Owens — Fatherless Homes. That is the way the left want it. Kids equals money bro, more kids = more money. Left do not care, the money comes from Net Taxpayers. No Father/s present means permanent welfare dependent. Also means these solo mothers will vote Labour. Pregnant and barefooted is a real thing.

  This is a complex issue and sometimes best for marriages to break up etc. I do sometimes ponder that I made vows and told my wife’s parents that I would love and take care of their daughter which makes the marriage a bigger commitment than simply living together. This public declaration does mean something to my mind. However, I have been at weddings and seen people make moving vows and within months it is all over, so love is a complex issue.

    That’s why every cent of our benefit system should be paying the bills and debts, not one cent in peoples hands until it’s paid, Nats policy of having a work coach could be the beginnings of this, under 25 year olds weee already getting their bills paid, I guess the woeful labour government has wiped this.   You know, I’m going to disagree with you there.
  
  My ex-partner (i.e. we never formally married) and I have a son (i.e. born out of wedlock).
  
  My ex and I are probably on better terms than when we split, we share custody of our son, who is well adjusted, doing well at school (year 12 this year) and is turning into a fine young white man.
  
  The outcome for children has much more to do with the attitudes of the parents than their marital status.

    rouppe: I agree. I am not exaggerating when I say that if my ex wife and I had not separated, one of us would have killed the other – or at least had a good go at it.
    
    Other than our much loved children, we had virtually nothing in common. Our relationship began as one of mutual using: I got regular sex and someone to come home to; she got hot and cold running water and a “rich” palangi to take her out regularly and buy her stuff.
    
    Things changed when my daughter came along. I married largely in the hope that if we did it might increase the chance of us staying together (I am strongly of the view that kids do best when they have two parents of the opposite sex)
    
    We managed six years, which wasn’t too bad for people with nothing in common from two utterly different cultures. Needless to say I have played a very active role in the kids’ lives since we split. We even used to manage family holidays together before she met the moron she is now married to.

    Outliers don’t disprove the central theory, and the data tells a very clear story over time. I think the key for you rouppe is that you’re still heavily engaged in your son’s life, whereas most of the young men that end up in prison or worse, have had no positive male role model involved in their lives since early days, if at all.

      Yes. It ws my son’s wife who caused the bust-up – after 5 years, she thought it much more exciting to jump into other men’s beds than her husbands. My son kicked her out & raised the daughter & son himself. The daughter is now in real-estate in Brisbane, and the son is at Canterbury uni studying Structural Engineering.

    Statistically, not true.
    
    The socioeconomic outcome gaps between the children of married versus solo parents are enormous, and even versus blended families they’re notable. NZ data is a little scarce but it exists, US data is abundant.
    
    I’m a child of divorced parents, and have had step parents, etc. Adults forget how damn meaningful it is to have a mum and a dad and a stable, simple family which role models committed, unconditional love and which doesn’t force kids to navigate a web of competing affections and interests.

  71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (National Principals Association Report)
  
  43% of US children live without their father [US Department of Census]
  
  Is it really so surprising to learn that a majority of bullies also come from fatherless homes? As do a majority of school shooters? As do a majority of older male shooters?
  I think it’s important to consider the possibility that this thing we like to call ‘an epidemic of bullying,’ is really an ‘epidemic of fatherlessness.’

      Runs a foundation that assists young people in to trade training, is very sceptical of the cost and benifits of many University courses today.
      
      Not sure where he got that particular statistic.

      Mike pointed out that many people these days seem to think that is an acceptable or even valid way of thinking, however as little as 20 or 30 years ago very few people would have agreed with that statement.

  The best way to stand out is to be with someone you love and who loves you. You don’t need to be married to raise great children and contribute to society, you don’t even need to be straight. Plenty of dysfunctional kids raised and abused, neglected in all types of families, plenty of kids thriving and loved in all kinds of families.

    I’m afraid I disagree. There is a good reason that in the the vast majority of cultures and across most if not all religions, the basic family unit is a man and woman. I agree you don’t need to be married

    Excellent point about the tatts and dreads…I have told my daughter that she is the standout one because, unlike all her mates, she doesn’t have tatts all over her arms. Of course I dare not ask if there are some that are not visible when she is clothed.

      To me that’s the ultimate inversion of our values .
      
      Once upon a time the royal courts set the trends , today it is prison inmates or dregs behaviour that’s “in”.

  When are these people going to come to the conclusion that at some time in the near future, we’re going to run out of normal people, the ones that marry and provide for their own kids in stable environments and at no cost to taxpayers and pay taxes to support those who don’t? We can’t continue like this. It’s high time we elected a Govt that has the balls to turn this situation around and make people responsible for their own futures devoid of Taxpayer handouts.
  It can’t be difficult, there was a time when life was one’s own responsibility.

The 4 pages are full of smiling, largely unknown MPs, fronted of course by the rather more largely known Megan Woods, extolling their various (non) ‘achievements’ and trumpeting their clarion call of supposedly ‘building a high wage, low emissions economy’. However what we are talking about with respect to photos is simply recording people (Kids) acting suspiciously on the expectation of later catching them in crime. With some limits to storage time, I am fine with that. After all we have businesses videoing us and storing that for an unknown period already.

    If they were builders in winter going to a distant job then it’s not random.
    
    I think it would be fair for a copper to politely ask questions , record details , no problem.
    
    The real issue here though is state intrusion into the lives of citizens who haven’t done anything wrong .
    
    If the cops come across a bunch of likely lads acting suspiciously then yes talk to them , ask questions , record details even , but why photograph , enetered into a database , kept for how long and by who , who else has access etc .
    
    And remember , it may start with “unruly yuffs” but where does it end .
    
    You could be having a smoke in a pub carpark or jst resting up after a long drive . Would you agree to having your photo taken . I wouldn’t and I certainly don’t trust this regime or indeed this police force under current “management” to do the right thing.
    
    You could get photographed for being a “climate denier” , an anti Whitakers chocolate bar wrapper opinion holder , a hate speecher , under this lot .
    
    Nope , we need to limit the state’s power not to increase it .
    
    btw if they want to stop crime then increase police numbers , target criminals and send them to prison for meaningful periods of time.

The climate change madness continues. The Methane Tax will push up prices and make our exports uncompetitive. The rich and elites will still be able to afford their eye fillet steaks etc. The poor will be impacted but this will be offset to some extent by increased welfare. As usual the middle class especially wage and salary earners will get a double whammy. Their cost of living will increase as will their taxes. Government know the only place to get more tax is the middle class wage and salary earners and they exploit this no matter their colours.
On a positive note I see Greta has finally conceded that nuclear is a viable option. NZ needs to put the emotion aside and have an adult conversation about nuclear. We need to double energy outputs by 2040 only 18 years away. I can see no plans to do this.
The Greens wont allow hydro or geothermal and wind and solar are expensive and unreliable whereas nuclear is zero emissions and relatively cheap to the output.
I say to the Pollies time is running out. get your sorry sad sack arses into gear.

Now to be fair, there’s probably not much that Nigel Haworth and I agree on, but we’re in synch on this; not so much the cancellation, but the reason given for it. It’s woke ideology on steroids!

A friend’s son participated in the Sheilah Winn festival a few years ago, and was fortunate enough to be selected for the New Zealand contingent to go to the Globe Theatre, which was a life-changing experience for him.

The students at that festival represented a cross-section of New Zealand, not just students from “privileged” schools. And their performances of two Shakespeare plays was modern, thoroughly enjoyable, and the passion with which students performed was obvious.

For Creative NZ to write Shakespeare off as “a canon of imperialism” is a bizarre decision, but in the current environment, it should not be a surprise. As I said at the start, Creative NZ is drunk!

I’ve been left stunned after reading one of the most damning critiques I’ve ever read of the Labour Party’s incompetence (and absolute indifference).

This is in relation to foreign affairs, trade, international education, alleviating the skill shortage … but also advancing a Free Trade Agreement with one of the worlds most populated nations, and as a counter to over reliance on trade with a growing authoritarian China.

Not only that, the Indian Foreign Minister has been calling our Dear Government out (in various international and local Indian media) ….. but as always, the sounds of tumbleweeds from NZ’s so-called Fourth Estate …. is it any wonder the NZ MSM get labeled the “Team of $55M”?

Now I suggest this is not only a failure by Foreign Minister Mahuta, this is equally if not more damning of our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern …. because instead of spending so much time visiting primary schools and attending photo-shoots (did anyone see how quickly she turned to face the clicking cameras at the presentations to two incredibly brave Police Officers yesterday? This incompetent clown show of a Labour Govt and imposter Prime Minister needs to go, now, they add absolutely no value to NZ’s prosperity and increasing the standard of living for all of our citizens! (In fact, they are doing the complete opposite). 🙁

Listening to the radio and they are complaining about a lack of truck drivers, govt doesn’t classify them as essential workers. The argument is that this should be changed.

I think that almost everyone misses the actual issue, which in my opinion is that we have moved to far from the free market. Regardless of the governments competence, be that a Labour or National government, no small group of people can hope to judge the needs of business better than the actual market. The immigration ministry is always chasing the need, changing the rules once a shortage in an area occurs. This just causes unnecessary pain to NZ businesses and harms the country.

I’m not saying we need to have open, uncontrolled immigration, there needs to be some standards around the people coming in, but the concept of the government waiting for shortages and only then allowing people in to an industry simply hurts the country and has immigration always chasing the demand. Lets abandon the concept of ‘green light industry sectors’, no one can guess the sector that will next have a shortage so lets not pretend we can.

  Truck driving and owning and operating has been in a race for the bottom for years. The operating costs of a truck are high, with maintenance and fuel. A truck could be $500k, and upwards. Many are leased, with the ongoing payments. You have a $160 COF every 6 months, that takes the truck off the road for a day, and it is random what VTNZ will find to fail you on this time, which has been fined up until now. The latest is Cardan shaft handbrakes, and the testing method may destroy gearboxes even though no problem has been shown to actually exist. This affects campervans as well.
  As a driver, you need medical exams and expensive licences, and with a class 5 and trailer license, you get the fine sum of $26/hour or so. For this you work all hours and get fined if you fill in the logbook wrong or 5 minutes over time allowed.
  I know a couple of people who have got out or are going. Most of the driving jobs in the case of one of them have been taken over by immigrants, typically Indian. They are hard on the equipment, and in this case, not good drivers, since they are straight out of the 2 day $1200 course to get an HT license. Work cheap though.

    Cardan shaft is merely a driveshaft. Two pieces, a driving shaft and a driven shaft. (spline) It can be braked in many ways – external clamping, or even mechanical disc. Yes, gearboxes can get a hammering.
    I don’ have to do all that medical shit because I don’t work as a truck/trailer driver; and I am retired. But there is nothing stopping me from rolling up at a hire place and driving one out the gate.
    Had my Class 5 for over 45 years, heavy boat haulage.

    The claim was that the vaccines were 95% effective. A very simple check of that information by many non experts (like me) at the time, revealed that this was Relative Risk Reduction. A number that is meaningless without also knowing the Absolute Risk Reduction. This figure is 0.8%
    
    Simply put, Absolute Risk Reduction is the only way to identify the true context of something reported in a clinical trial. It’s usually a much smaller number than Relative Risk Reduction (RRR), but it helps you assess the real world impact of a study finding.
    Simply put, Absolute Risk is less sexy than Relative Risk. It doesn’t make for good press headlines.
    
    Simply put, ARR was marketing, not science.
    Ardern claimed the vaccine meant covid would be “like measle” after the jab. That it would protect from infection and transmission. As per the above link from Steve Otto, that was a blatant lie.
    Her only possible get out of jail on this is that she was using advice given to her by her “experts”. If that is indeed the case, then those “expert” need to be in jail for medical malfeasance, manslaughter and assault.

    It clearly shows that Medsafe were fully aware of the physical risks of the vaccine, and that so much important information regarding the effects on pregnant, breastfeeding, frail and elderly and immune compromised was deemed missing information.
    
    Yet these groups were the ones advised most strenuously that it was critical they get jabbed. Even though Medsafe, and (surely also Ardern and Hipkins) were aware of this information. There is no possible “plausible deniability” on something so serious. Yet they embarked on a vicious campaign to compel people to participate in this global experiment.

    So when now, some of my friends tell me to “move on”, “let it go” etc my response is no. There needs to be a serious conversation. There need to be many admissions of wrongdoing and failure, and indeed of deliberate bullying and vicious vilification of people for doing nothing more than standing up for their rights.
    
    There was never a period that could justify “vaccine” mandates. There were serious questions being asked by highly qualified people long before the “vaccines” even came to market. The assault on these people and the shutting down of this information was the most telling reason not to trust a word Ardern and co were saying.

In the Christchurch Innes ward Pauline Cotter has defeated Ali Jones by 16 votes after specials. This is a good result for the three term counsellor who used to share the ward with Ali Jones 2 election cycles ago.

Pauline deserves the result, but it does change the mix on council with labour retaining a one ward majority out of 17. However Cotter did vote against Lab on intensification, so can be an independent thinker like Yani Johannsen out East.

78 year old brother tendered eight $20 notes when he saw the supermarket total was $153. He was surprised when the till operator asked, after she had counted the notes;

A Dunedin dementia unit is being forced to close due to severe staffing shortages forcing 16 patients to move.

The unit at Ross Home has 24 beds and requires staff who can provide round-the-clock care.

But the labour shortage has taken a toll with the owner of Ross Home, Presbyterian Support Otago, announcing on Friday the unit was being closed.…..

It’s not the only unit affected either, with O’Neil revealing Presbyterian Support Otago has closed nearly 1000 aged care beds because of staffing shortages.
