Eighty years ago today, the minesweeper HMNZS South Sea sank in Wellington Harbour after colliding with the inter-island steamer Wahine. There were no deaths as the collision was well inside the harbour and other patrol craft were near. The wreck is off Point Halswell.

  81 Years ago today, HMS Netpune struck mines near Tripoli and was lost with all but 1 sailor.
  
  Of the 736 that perished, 150 were New Zealand sailors, including four from Nelson. A memorial service to Neptune and her crew is held each year in Nelson.

Should the Government not act in whatever process is needed to make a sentence of one year mandatory for anyone convicted of retail crime, and three years mandatory for any conviction of injury, with such penalties taking precedence over any lesser sentence deemed appropriate, and giving way to any normal sentence that is greater.

Rather than being demeaned as a general community in ads that say “It’s almost out the door” and “We are saving so much … planet right now”, is this not a perceived community that Jacinda has forgotten is a part of Us?

    In Chicago, which has about 800 murders a year, only about 200 result in a charge.
    BTW
    Chicago is about two the size of Auckland
    Here in NZ pretty much all homicides result in someone charges.
    I’m told that’s because we have a far higher ratio of detectives to front line police.
    Here someone is usually charged for gun attacks, knife/machete attacks.
    That bloke who chopped the shop assistants fingers off will almost certainly be caught.

        Stuff was taken from my house in Ngaio.
        Police turned up and actually arrested the culprits a couple of months later.
        Same people had stolen stuff from ~30 houses and someone spotted something at Cash Converters.
        Stuff was taken out of my garage here in Auckland , police turned up, but I knew it was a hopeless case, but insurance came into it.
        Someone pinched our garden hose once.
        If you don’t want to get stuff stolen look after it. Don’t blame whichever government is in power.

      Have they caught the murderer of the dairy worker yet? The drive by shooters or the church assassin? We’ll wait and see. I’m not sure you’re faith in our detectives is well placed they’re good but they can’t be in two places at once. Labour signalled to a section of society that they were legitimate cultural groups rather than criminal organisations and gave them status and money.

  An interesting sidelight to the dairy robbery at the weekend. It has been speculated that the machete attack was designed to prevent the staff member activating the fog cannon which had been activated during a previous robbery in the store. Once again, it seems as though the criminals are a step ahead of the authorities.

    I can’t believe that shop owners aren’t all arming themselves en masse. I would be. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.
    
    I’m also surprised someone hasn’t set up a trap to catch some of these thugs. Park a Demio on the side of the road with heavily tinted windows. Wait for the scum to break in and start driving off, then surprise them from behind with something to subdue them… I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination.
    
    But seriously, why aren’t the public fighting back in this way? Are we all that complacent because it doesn’t affect me personally? I’m not as young as I was, otherwise I’d be rounding up a posse…
    
    The only silver lining to all this (if you can call it that) is that every crime event like this is turning more and more people off the current government as they are perceived to be soft and ineffective on crime.

        The term you’re looking for is “collateral damage”. These deaths and injuries are acceptable to Police, the judiciary and the governments of the day in preference to allowing people to defend themselves with firearms or even like-for-like machetes, because that would increase the death toll.
        
        “We don’t want to become like America” is the call, and that too is accepted by the vast majority of voters. Combined with this is the pure utilitarianism of focusing on road deaths, the argument being that many more people die on the roads than in shops via violent crime.
        
        So any outrage/sadness/regret/calls-for-justice etc, are just performative to quiet down the public and allow the status quo system to continue to move on.

  IMHO the Government the Judicary the Police and the Lawyer Class lack the capacity capability and most important the will to deal with crime. They are content to sit and wait until crime is committed and then maybe take some action. They are all reactionary rather than proactive.
  They should apply the laws the Government set for H&S that is identify the risk and eliminate it. And I do mean identify and eliminate with extreme prejudice.

I thought they depicted fairly normal scenarios actually – aren’t most people pleased to see their mortgage decrease? Haven’t heard any comment from either the Police minister or PM over the vicious attacks, which I feels say’s it all – they have no answers.

I’ve given up on donating to charity – particularly those that give to the poor and needy in Africa and other third world countries, for two reasons: first, when you feed these people, the first thing they do Is breed again, just exasperating the hunger problem even further, second, if you look at the annual accounts of these charity organisations, you will see that the people that run these charities are on quite large salaries (think $300,000 pa), so most of your donation goes to the people running the charity, not to the people who it is supposed to be for.
So, stop giving to these charities, the third world people stop breeding (and so help control population growth), and climate change becomes less of a problem!

  The reason why people in poorer countries, the vast majority of whom don’t live off charity handouts, unlike the the older people here who get a universal pension, is they rely on their family to look after them in their old age. In exchange they might look after their kids while they’re at work, cook the meals, clean the house.

  The answer to your concerns is not to stop donating to charity altogether, it is to look specifically for charities with a focus on female education and health. When women are better educated and have ready access to contraceptives, reductions in birth rates follow.

    Have sex or not.
    Use contraceptives or not.

  unfortunately 103PP, the first natural reaction of all living beings from plants to humans, to stress and threat of imminent demise, is to procreate and ensure that even if the individual perishes, the species will continue.
  The other natural reaction to low survival rates of juveniles, is to breed in greater numbers to ensure that at least some might survive.
  Hence in more ‘advanced” civilisations the family size drops quite fast while feeding the starving poor creates a synthetic survival scenario where the poorest have the largest families and against the trend most survive to create a growing underclass of uneducated and ignorant, low productivity mindless drones with a propensity to ignore societal norms and put personal survival at the top of their priorities. Rules are meaningless in such a scenario so the laws that need to be obeyed (society’s rules) are ignored and we descend into chaos wring our hands and praying for salvation.

Just another statistic the government has managed to make worse.

They take something, in this case road deaths and say – its too high. So they set a completely unrealistic target – We need to aim for zero deaths on the road. Spend a bunch of money on a moronic advertising campaign, which does nothing except likely line the pockets of their mates in the media and then reduce the speed limit on a bunch of roads.

Its all spin and no idea how to actually deliver anything.

The result? Worst year for road deaths since 2018 and could even be the worst in a decade once the Xmas toll comes in.

Instead of fixing the roads and actually installing the median barriers that have been recommended, they do literally nothing to work towards the thing they say they are trying to fix.

And if the PM is queried on it she will say, we are aspirational and people just ignore the fact they made it worse by not even trying to make things better.

I don’t know who is worse, the government for thinking they can achieve stuff without doing any work, or the people that vote for them, believing they can.

I wonder how much extra tax payer money has been spent on road safety this year for a worse outcome?

I wonder when people will realise that fixing things doesn’t mean announcing how much money you are throwing at it, it actually requires a plan and then physical action.

    We have much lower road speeds and less people speedinging to excess (more than 10k over the limit), yet the number of deaths is up. Could it be that speed isn’t the issue?
    
    Note: We should stop looking at the road toll as # of deaths and look at the percentage. Each year we increase the number of vehicles on the road so to a degree it is only natural the road toll will increase.

      Perhaps, although the road toll is equally a measure of the safety of the vehicle fleet and the speed of access to quality medical care. People are walking away from accidents that would have been fatal in a 90’s era car and surviving injuries that would have been unsurvivable prior to rescue helicopters and advanced medical care.
      The road toll is actually a pretty meaningless statistic. It would be much more interesting to know how many serious accidents are occurring.

  Ram raiding requires car theft. Any modern car with a transponder-type key fob is difficult to steal because it can’t be hot-wired. Any car with a bar-type steering lock is a bit hard to steal because it takes an angle grinder to remove it which is a bit slow and rather noisy.
  
  So if we gave away this type of steering lock to anyone who came and asked, it might slow things down by making car theft a bit harder …. they retail for sums between $20-$60.
  
  Not a 100% idea but ….

        Good ones are high tensile (really tough) , making it damn hard to cut, even with a disc grinder. In early cars they are a good deterrent.
        My T150 always had a high tensile chain on it when parked in public, even dyna bolted to the garage floor, with our German Shepherds running around free.

Without trying to sound insensitive to what happened to this Hamilton dairy worker, the question must be asked – how effective are fog canons and security alarms in the first place?

I assume these buttons are somewhere behind the counter but if the worker is not there when the crime takes place then it’s no good for them.

These lowlife scum repeat offenders know this and will devise tactics to prevent dairy workers activating these devices.

Bottom line is hefty new laws for dairy hold ups, ram raids and other related crimes should be implemented right now by this govt.

Real prison time and no excuses for these dirt bags reasons for committing these crimes.

  The police and government ask retail shop owners not to arm themselves.
  Had that neighbour in Hamilton approached them with a firearm in hand, the police would have made an example of him. And if he was even holding a baseball bat I expect he would be condemned.
  
  IMO you should be able to do whatever you like to someone who enters your premises with a tomahawk or machete or such. And if the public was able to intervene in ANY way they saw fit as well to support the victim then the discomfort for the criminals would increase.
  
  Never going to happen though.
  The criminals are out of control, but the police and the law will not want to lose control of the lawful.
  A mutilated or dead shop owner, or any number of them, is not going to mean any less protection for or a reconsideration of the rights of the criminal class.
  Personally, I think open season should be called, and shop owners allowed to weapon up and use lethal force. Some of the Sikh folk should start sleeping onsite with axe handles or worse.
  If enough carloads of these ‘teens’ (and these are physically grown men in many case) were killed or seriously injured then this would come right.
  The law unfortunately these days can only exert force on the otherwise law abiding.
  If I opened my gun safe and went to the aid of someone being attacked with a machete across the road I would be in for a world of trouble for both getting involved and ‘disproportionate force’.
  The police seem to just place charges, and let the system decide, rather than letting people use weapons on criminals.
  The government would much prefer you lose a couple of finger, or sit by and let another person lose them.

I hope people have been keeping up with the World Health Organisation’s sustained assault on our sovereignty. The most recent work includes this little revision:

“the implementation of these regulations shall be ~~with full respect for the dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of persons~~”.

Yes, that bit is proposed for removal, to be replaced with some flannel about “equity, inclusivity, and coherence”

The run-up to Christmas is a time for politicians to sneak through sensitive news …

And Sunday night is not Kiwiblog’s busiest time, so: did you notice the latest Treaty payouts for Ngai Tahu and Waikato Tainui tribes, announced last week, and brought up by poster Kowtow last night?

Waikato-Tainui and Ngai Tahu have been paid $101.5 million and $96.5 million respectively as top-ups to their original Treaty of Waitangi settlements. The tribes get top-ups every five years under “relativity mechanisms” to their treaty settlements. These began when total treaty settlements topped $1 billion.

The first top-ups were in in 2012,, when Tainui was paid $70m and Ngai Tahu $68.5m.

Top-ups will continue, especially with the big Ngapuhi claim unsettled. Stuff reported in 2018 that onece total Treaty settlement spending throughout reached $1 billion, the two tribes were entitled to payments proportional to other tribes’ settlements. For Tainui, the figure was 17 per cent, valued in 1994 dollars, and for Ngai Tahu, 16 per cent.

In 2018, Waikato-Tainui received $190m and Ngai Tahu $180m – more than they originally settled for in 1995 and 1998, respectively. Top-ups were also paid in 2012.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Little said last week that both tribes are able to receive relativity mechanism adjustment payments every five years to ensure the real value of their settlements remains at 17 percent (Waikato-Tainui) and 16.1 percent (Ngāi Tahu) of total Treaty settlement expenditure.

Former National list MP and Minister Chris Finlayson negotiated the settlement for Ngai Tahu – sometimes called a sweetheart deal – when he was a lawyer, before his political career.

  Fair question Maggie. Here’s my prediction:
  1) Police would have to be seen to be following correct procedure – arrest said dairy worker.
  2) once it reaches court this will play out more in the context of the system has failed to protect so they took their protection into their own hands.
  3) outcome would be minimal to no sentence as in the court of public opinion this was self-defense all along.

    Without stronger self- and property defence rights, people defending themselves and their homes/shops are likely to spend eighteen months and a lot of money on lawyers waiting for their court date and uncertainly hoping for a sympathetic jury.

  Assuming they could get a gun license (remember they can’t even hint that protection is a reason for wanting one). They may find either a murder charge or manslaughter. (there should very definitely be an investigation to make sure it was a justified shooting)
  
  If the Crown is thinking of the bad PR that would come their way, they would quietly decline to press charges. If they instead try to use it to send a message, things could go very badly for the government in the next elections.

    A woman found a snake on Takapuna beach. I think she put it in a box or bag. She rang DOC and told them. I don’t know what happened after that, but DOC were thinking of prosecuting her for cruelty to an animal.

      There is something severely demented in DOC for this both to be the response on an individual within the organisation, but wider, as subsequently there has been no withdrawal of the stupid response.
      
      New Zealand is attractive to tourists, and the general population for having few if any natural predators that can kill humans (apart from ourselves of course) and to have such a policy, even if only informal, indicates an organisation so out of touch, it should be shut down and restructured.

        A “C” endorsement has nothing to do with the status of the particular firearm.
        
        A percussion or flintlock pistol will be NLR as you cannot buy ammunition for them.
        
        A C endorsement allows a collector to display (for instance) firearms with the bolts in the guns rather than stored separately. Also a C holder can own a few “interesting” items!

  THey would prosecute to “let the courts sort it out”. While they would walk free, the $50-100k “fine” for legal costs is punishment in itself, not to mention 2 years of stress. Only the police are alowed to shoot people, including innocent passing courier drivers then proceed to mix up the evidence with no downside.
  
  It goes without saying, your gun license would be gone forever.
  If the police couldn’t prosecute you for shooting the scumbag, they certainly will do you for insecure storage. Ask Greg Carvell what happens when a nut with a machete attacks you and you defend yourself.
  
  This is why honest people need to be wary of Cindy’s Stasi and never trust them. They are not your friends. Video everything and say nothing.

Dairy round the corner ram-raided last night. The owner stands behind that till 80 hours a week, has done for the 20 years I’ve lived here and then this happens. The car they used was taken from 800m down the road, so Christmas for both parties now less than what it should have been. I see it doesn’t even rate a mention on any of the MSM sites this morning.

Last week the Iranian Parliament called for the execution of all 15,000.

According to Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the Islam Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) the average age of the protesters is 15.

    but no Pfizer, no Novavax
    BUT I have had C19 Valneva, a true vaccine.

    I’ve been quite surprised that our host has never picked up on the increasing evidence and mainstream reporting of these mRNA vaccine induced issues and their overall inefficacy.
    
    Then again it’s probably not that surprising given not one National Party MP ever questioned what happened in NZ with regard to the mandates or the refusal of ACC to acknowledge those harmed by the Pfizer vaccine. Four youths have been arrested following a home invasion, a series of commercial burglaries, and an incident in which shots were fired at police in the Waikato District early this morning.

One person was injured during the home invasion and the occupants are “understandably shaken”, say police.

  I don’t know anything about your first and third examples, as you provide nothing to consider.
  Re SSRIs, evidence (as in data collected by actual scientists) has been accumulating for some time that these are not the magical cure-all that they seemed when Prozac first hit the market. SSRIs are an improvement on their most common predecessors, but they are by no means a ‘cure’ for depression, which is a catch-all terms for a wide range of conditions.

A 14-year-old boy has admitted cutting off his electronic monitoring bracelet and committing a major crime spree across Christchurch, including stealing cars, assaulting other young people and burglaries.

The boy admitted 86 charges in total, the most recent of which were heard at the Christchurch Youth Court last Thursday, when he also agreed to apologise to all of his victims.

His charges included assaul with intent to injure, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, aggravated robbery and theft.

A man has posted on social media saying he saw a man running around with no top on while he was parked at traffic lights.

“Yelled something about someone with a knife, and stabbing someone. I couldn’t see anything just him running back to his van to grab a big wrench.”
