    Captain Scarlet was quite creepy when I was a kid. It was a bit darker than the other shows. I love how the characters often had a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. You don’t see that in the modern animated Thunderbirds of course but it does have the requisite diverse characters and an infallible female lead

      This is the big political dilemma. The National Party suffered up to and after the 2020 election because some of its MP’s did not accept the leadership, leaked (undermining the leader and fellow MP’s) and went off on frolics of their own. So Chris Luxon had to obtain the general consensus of all of his MP’s before he could make any sort of progress. Also the Labour Party would just love it if National swung to the right as some people on Kiwiblog and elsewhere want. Such a shift would effectively gift the centre vote to Labour/ Greens.
      So any new National MP needs to breathe through his/her nose for the first three years (Keith Holyoake’s advice), find out how Parliament works (Jonathan Hunt’s advise when Speaker – his political enemies regarded him as a ‘very capable prick’) and make a positive contribution to Parliament’s work – initially through Select Committee membership including researching and getting on top of the Committee’s work.
      I recently met an extroverted guy who aimed to be a National candidate and he asked me how the Board was appointed etc (he presumably thought he could lobby Board members and/or influence their appointments). I asked him if he had done the NATIONAL101 on line course and he had not (presumably implying he was above that). In the past he may have successfully BS-ed his way into candidacy, but nowadays he would have far less chance with that. Hopefully National will have fewer ‘failure’ MP’s (eg the likes of Mark Blumsky, Jami Lee-Ross, the one who claimed he was mugged in Molesworth St years ago, etc) in the future.

        The biggest problem with MMP is it gives the small independent voices disproportionate power as happened in 2015 after Mr Sabin resigned from Parliament and Winston won that seat (which admitted the next NZF list candidate) thus breaking John Key’s one seat absolute majority. If it were not for that episode John may have had a fourth term and Covid would have been handled far more competently.

      The Northland candidate selection is coming up early in the New Year. Numerically, Northland has more National Party members than any electorate in the country, with a significant increase in membership in the past year. The local members will have full control over the selection and those seeking the nomination will have to impress a large number of party members/delegates to get the nod.

      My possibly naive understanding of climate change is that Maggie Thatcher, upset that Welsh miners so regularly welshed on the UK’s coal energy needs, and Middle East kept her oil supplies at the time in continual turmoil, that she wanted to promote nuclear generated power but feared a backlash because nobody yet knew where to put the waste – it was dirty.
      
      “But,” said scientists “fossil fuel is dirtier”
      “Oh,” said Maggie “Here’s funding to research more of that angle – it is a good argument” – so the religion of “Climate Change” was given birth and spreadeth around the earth, and at its core: funding – or more simply: MONEY – the root of all evil.

        I’m not sure that it’s a naïve understanding, but I don’t think it’s correct. Burning coal for energy is undoubtedly bad for the environment, which thatcher was right to acknowledge – think of the infamous pea-souper fogs that London used to suffer from, until they banned burning coal in the greater London area.
        
        Environmental concerns are valid but they have little-to-nothing to do with climate change.

Company’s waste plant plans rejected for second time
Because

A council spokesperson, Hayleigh Brereton, said …. “While the resubmitted application addresses many of the matters raised in the previous version regarding adverse effects of the discharges to air, stormwater and wastewater one critical issue remains ,” …. the council believed a site cultural impact assessment with or by Te Rūnanga o Waihao was required.

Am I the only one to wonder what additional “adverse effects” a cultural report will uncover, and how much money and delay will be involved? And whether the council will then require more information or changes.

This technology might be new-ish to New Zealand but is well established overseas. Maybe they didn’t need race based input.

  Tell the Council to get fucked and take the matter to an independent court where the Council has to prove Te Rūnanga o Waihao’s report is essential to operational standards of the plant.
  Clearly, it can’t. Maori mythology has no place in the operation of a Waste Plant other than ongoing Koha payments, and that’s a rort!

    If Council has notified iwi that they are an affected party then they are and the applicant just needs to get on with that, you cant just say “no your culture dosent matter”. The Council ruling cant just be ignored. A Court isnt going to be impressed by the applicant standing there with fingers in the eras saying nah nah nah I cant hear you….
    
    However there is an underlying issue. Why were the iwi given affected party status? Was it sensitive land as listed in the district plan? If not then Council needs to look at its process (good luck with that)
    
    Here a marae was given affected party status to a Council building project because that could see the roof of the new building 1.5kms away… so iwi were party to hearing and got paid for that…roof painted in colour approved by iwi…etc etc…

        There’s a country marae near Morven, just south of Waihao River. So, there must be some users of such a facility living nearby.
        The area population is very small though. Even the local primary school was closed some years ago due to the dwindling roll.

    Maybe not mythology but an Ohau landowner applied for consent to a world class $50mill 18 hole golf course and associated amenities including numerous environmental considerations. The local iwi said no due to a former pa on the land but 9 holes is OK.
    
    Maybe the owner will sell the land off to overseas interests for pine planting carbon credits and do the minimum required for that purpose.

      There are two iwi. The first iwi said no way you can build a golf course there. But after 10 lifetime memberships were given it was suddenly all good. Oh, plus Phil Tautarangi had to design the course. How can they not see that is racist?
      Anyhow, then the 2nd lot of iwi came along….
      have they discovered the pa site, so only 9 holes?

As a Kaipara resident I happened to be sitting next to him in a Mangawhai cafe the other week. I should state I did not vote for him. Put simply he is a real “Character ” and it will never be dull when he is around. Its great when you have people like our new mayor in public office you might not agree with their views but they are not like the toothless wonders that generally seat warm councils and governments. Lets hope we have more of them as I said you don’t have to agree with them.

Who gave the order for Police to restrict access to an Auckland beach yesterday because of crowd numbers? Is this a core policing role? Shouldn’t our Police be out catching real criminals instead of preventing law-abiding New Zealanders going about their lawful business by going to the beach?

So many questions, but I won’t hold my breath awaiting answers. On the face of it, this seems to be a massive overreach by the Police. But it’s also indicative of Labour’s arse-about-face policing priorities where gangs run rampant whilst everyday, law-abiding Kiwis are increasingly being targeted for attention.

  Agree. Who called this illegal beach closure. Total bullshit. And where do the planners expect people to have large family gatherings? If Auckland allows the building of 100’s of thousands of apartment blocks and townhouses with no backyards, of course people are going to have more need to use our public space to have large family gatherings.       My family’s initial plan had been to go to Cornwall Park yesterday, a park that we have visited regularly for decades. However we decided to go “somewhere different” and less crowded, and went to Monte Cecilia Park. Not as big as Cornwall Park, but big enough for a family picnic in a quiet spot, and a walk after lunch.         I could not agree more Mike. When we were in the Highlands a few years ago we visited The Glenlivet distillery. At tasting time, we were told in no uncertain times that ice was verboten; it stops the whisky’s flavour developing as it sits in the glass. If one did not want to drink their whisky neat, the suggestion was a few DROPS of water, and no more.
        
        It’s advice I took on board. I now drink my single malt exactly as it comes from the bottle, and it never fails to warm my insides!

        Most good single malts are better with a small amount of water, added a few drops at a time until you get it right. Especially cask strength editions where the high alchohol produces a burning sensation.

  Does Long Bay still have the one lane bridge for access? If it does, I can imagine the traffic jams and frustration would have been awful as only one vehicle can enter/exit at a time. I think it would have been a traffic issue rather than the actual beach being over crowded.

  I think the restrictions did not come from a people count, but a vehicle count. Parking is always fairly restricted. I think the parking was full. Once again, a bloody Council problem.
  Then the Police get in on the cat about alcohol. We are not all fucking pissheads. Some drink responsibly. Swim between the flags. Bullshit. In 50 plus years on the Shore I have never seen flags or lifeguards on that beach, unless it was just started. And here is the thing, the is NO BLOODY RIP in that bit of sea! Muriwai beach has undertows.

  I live in an apartment a few hundred metre away and up from the park. It’s a great park and beach. Often in the weekends it gets busy, they have overflow paddocks for car parks. It’s hundreds of metres long with heaps of grass areas , bbqs, pagolas, playgrounds etc. I’d agree with the cops, basically they are probably saying there is absolutely no where in the area for you to park your car – so full. I’m away at present so didn’t see it in person

  As others have noted, that car park becomes a predictable cluster once too many cars are in it. This makes disorder (road rage) likely and also a danger to life by obstructing access to emergency vehicles in the case of a medical event. S35 of the Policing Act authorises a temporary road closure in such circumstances. Which is what I suspect happened.

  That’s not an inconsequential amount of money.
  The government can’t just write out a blank chequer.

  I think she recognises that there are sovereignty and other issues at stake. There are perfectly good data centres in NZ and Oz owned by NZ and Oz companies that the Government can use. Using them is a no brainer so she does not really need to meet them. Anyway when politicians start putting their stick beaks into procurement decisions, there is nothing but trouble. So she and her advisers would seem to have the sense not to meet with them, but allow them to offer their services on merit.

    A visit, perhaps not necessarily by the PM but by the relevant Minister, would signal support for the local enterprise, paying NZ taxes and employing NZ labour.
    
    Other interesting things are happening though. Move Logistics, a NZ Stock Exchange listed company availed themselves to $10 million Government subsidy intended for re-vitalisation of NZ coastal shipping. They spent this money to purchase a second hand general cargo vessel, which is registered in Vanuatu and is to trade in Trans-Tasman trade, crewed by the Filipino crew. The single ship company set up for this venture is incorporated in Singapore. The mystery is, why should the NZ taxpayer subsidize a private venture of this kind?

  Ardern looks to have played this well so far, I hope she does realise there are sovereignty matters at stake. It’s only recently, probably post covid, that I’ve seen how real the risk of big tech, big pharma, WEF, global climate change agreements etc on domestic policy. I’m a firm believer that NZ should do what’s best for NZ, and if that sounds insular I’d note that there is a natural check and balance in place anyway – if we attempt to swim against the whole global tide we’ll go bust anyway. I see that the RB is probably going to impose a debt to income ratio limit on house loans in an effort to reduce house prices but exempting new builds. So even in the unlikely event it is successful in reducing prices the consequence will be that new build owners will have negative equity. Brilliant.

How about instead just taking an axe to the bureaucracy that makes new builds expensive and let the market work?

I used to worry about keeping up with the Joneses. Now I worry about keeping up with the laundry.

We once had a voice-activated, kick-start, belt-driven washing machine. Then he left home.

There are weeds in my garden that I am convinced are not known to science.

My daughter once asked me: “Daddy, were you in the ark?” “No, dear,” I replied. “Then why didn’t you drown?”

Each morning I do my exercises when I wake. “Up, down; up, down,” I go. “Now the other eyelid.”
I go for a run round the block; then put the block back under the bed and reset the alarm.

My big decision is what to do for the day. Should I relax, or just laze? Be indolent, laid back, or take it easy? I used to think I was indecisive, but now I’m not so sure.

My back goes out more often than I do. If I bend down to pick something up, I ask myself, “What else can I do while I’m down here?”

My children ask me, why don’t you act your age? How can I. I’ve never been this old before!

But I’ll have you know that I’ve still got it. I just can’t remember where I put it.

      First they tried a lightning strike at Kyev to seize the govt/country and invaded on a number of fronts . Then they collapsed in the NE bit of the south as well as having to retreat off the west bank of the Dnieper. Now they’re engaged in a meatgrinder at Backmut.

Switzerland, like New Zealand, uses a lot of hydro-generated electricity.

Supply can be affected by weather, as in NZ when snow storage or snow melt is affected around South Island lakes.

As preparation for hydro-power shortages, Switzerland is drawing up plans that could be imposed on electric cars. Someone pointed this out on Kiwiblog early this month, but it didn’t seem to sink in that NZ and Switzerland have similarities in their power systems.

The Swiss plan potential restrictions of EV’s to “absolutely necessary journeys”.

Imagine being isolated in say, the Mackenzie Country, and unable to use your electric car during a cold, blackout-threatened southern winter.

  The next cry of insanity will be for the NZ Govt to call a ban on recharging EVs for a given period due to an actual or perceived lack of renewable power.
  All this as the neighbourhood goes into a diesel induced rumple as people start up their own generators to charge their EVs.

I have to say what a real pleasure it was to watch 1 News tonight, with Daniel Faitaua presenting.

Because he did something that is quite radical these days. He quite simply … did his job. Mr Faitaua presented the news clearly, and in a manner that was easily understandable. He presented the news – in English.

What an unexpected pleasure it was to listen to the news and NOT have to think, “Wait … what did he say?” or “Sorry, what does that word mean?” How refreshing to be able to listen to the news without having to pause mid-report to look something up, SIMPLY TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT.

In short – how pleasing it was to listen to the news and actually be able to understand it. Long may it continue.
