We ended up watching a bit of Sky News Australia last night. With a brutal evisceration of Harry’s goings on and a weekly tribute to what is woke we thought if the TVNZ/RNZ merger could end up with something like Sky News it might be worthwhile.

  cas: Agree but not a “snowball’s” if it goes ahead; it will be woker than ever. However…National MPs have said they will can the merger. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but they might alter the terms of reference to something sensible. That said, there’s no rational reason for the merger.

    It’s typical of National that they don’t think strategically. They should just be quiet on the TVNZ/RNZ merger, for it will produce a beast that’s even worse than the two are now.
    
    All the Lefties are hoping that the good things about RNZ (good from their POV) will infect TVNZ and end the likes of Fuck Boy Island, replaced by Panorama/Horizon-type programmes.
    
    Actually it’s likely to go the other way, and even if it doesn’t the dysfunctional infighting will degrade the new entity even further, plus ever-declining viewership as the “Youf” of Gen-Z stick to watching YouTube, TikTok and the rest. At some stage a future government, desperate for savings, will just can it or cut so much budget that it will be effectively dead. And their won’t be enough people left who even know, let alone care.
    
    So I say, roll on with the merger. Waste another few hundred million. Best thing that could happen to them.

Associated Press, a major contributor to ‘news’ in NZ has admitted receiving over $12 million in ‘donations’ tagged that required them to run catastrophic climate change stories.

The money came from various wealthy funds in the USA that are run by spoiled kids and grandkids of the wealthy who would be turning in their graves if they knew where their money was going.

How much money is going into other local news media with a similar “make climate change stories scary” tag? We know the requirements to get money from the slush fund that Labour set up to bolster their image so bribing is not new or uncommon. So much for a free and independent press.

    Seems to be working pretty well, and has clearly influenced some of the lesser brains around here. The ones who think there’s a giant thermostat that neatly dials the temperature down a couple of degrees, using nothing more than a change to the most trivial of factors that determine what the climate does, for example.

  $12 million is less than chump-change compared to the resources available to those who have a financial, if not existential, interest in persuading people that there’s no problem with continuing large scale fossil fuel combustion, ie the oil exporting economies and the oil and gas multinationals.

    Because the overwhelming majority of journalists are Lefties and this has long since turned into a Leftie issue because it promises more government control as the solution. Plus the other Leftie aspect that corporations are the problem – although in the era of Google, Apple, Facebook and company, some corporations are more equal than others, meaning they’re “not evil”. Unfortunately the fossil fuel companies don’t fall into that category for “journalists”.

    I think most Americans will be happy she is gone. The things she got up to on the Taxpayer dollar are incredible. @016 when Trump came to power, Pelosi was off on a junket in Brussels I think. She had 93? people going with her, including friends and relatives. The accommodation was all booked, the restaurants booked, the plane was full of food and booze, and they were all ready.
    Then Trump came along and said they could all go to Europe but not on Air Force One.
    93 in buses driving around in circles because the Base was off limits. I still don’t know what happened. Maybe they went commercial?

  Pfft. I pointed out to “Bomber” that despite his attacks on The Standard as censorious mouthpieces (and they are on Labour/Ardern) they actually have been posting my occasional comments – as opposed to him on TDB.
  
  I don’t think he liked me pointing out that although I enjoy his writing he does suffer from florid hysteria in his prose, which leads him to write some very stupid stuff even on issues where I agree with him, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

See there is all this concern about prison numbers rising – it is put down to ram-raids, stabbings and shootings. The bleeding hearts are decrying it of course.
How many of those prisoners are just there on remand? Old data was about quarter of them. The problem is the glacialy slow justice system. It isn’t unusual for there to be two years between arrest and court case. Judges don’t give sentences at the end of trials, they reserve their decisions and take months to make a ruling. All the time, everyone clips the ticket and real victims get shafted.
How about the next Justice/ Courts Ministers address this issue as high priority. You read old crime stories. Court cases were often only weeks after arrest. How about we go back to the past?

    I know a couple of current and ex-corrections officers. It is not the money. It is particularly low morale, from a management that is against them -the prisoner is always right until proven otherwise stuff. The courts treat assaults on them as wet bus ticket offences and the Minister doesn’t support them or their concerns.
    Fix those and a lot of the issues go away.

  Partner and I are waiting to give evidence about an event that occurred just over two years ago. We received a summons to attend at the end of last year, however the defence lawyer submitted yet another delaying tactic which means our new date is looking like late this year.
  It’s quite stressful on us (and the other witnesses too I’m sure) for one thing. Another thing annoying us is the cost to taxpayers. It’s all on us…the lawyer, several court dates for it to be deferred, and police time checking the accused is adhering to his bail conditions.

    Have you thought the defence lawyer has discovered the police are hiding information. Sorry misplaced information.
    
    I was a witness in a case which was delayed 3 times because the defence lawyer found information was begin withheld. Sorry, misplaced. Even at the trial the police accidentally referred to evidence which had not been disclosed.

        The police should be ashamed for bringing the case – they have discretion to not prosecute. Disgusting – our legal system in some cases is wrong, and supports the criminals. The two perps should not have been in the house, and if Burr had shot them, well done I say – even though he stated that he did not want to shoot them – but they should not have been there threatening his life.

Who’s behind the mumblings that would lift Judith Collins in the National line-up?

It’s going to be a challenging year as National and ACT position themselves while Labour disintegrates.

Suddenly, it seems to me, either the same mob of agitators who promoted the MP mutinies that nearly finished National, or last-ditch Labour saboteurs, are stimulating dissension within the party.

Collins had a brief spell at the top, but unlike Bridges, whom she must have opposed, has stayed in the House. Now stirrers are creating a debate about whether she would be better than Brownlee as a National-appointed Speaker.

As the Luxon regime settles in, National looks its strongest for years. Who would want to disrupt it if not saboteurs within the Labour-controlled media? Are the stirrers behind the National mutinies active again?

    And she said she wasn’t sorry to see Bennett quit.
    
    And, this, from an article in the Guardian, 6 December, 2021:

        Answering ‘NZer in Exile’ – Yes Kiwis generally have unrestricted access to live and work in Australia (even though there is no chance of Australian residency or citizenship). The exception is Kiwis who do not meet 501 requirements ie have been sentenced to more than a year in prison. There is always the potential that Australia could cancel privileged access for Kiwis such that they would need to get an appropriate entry visa like those from any other country in the world. I think people would be pretty hopping mad if that was the unintended outcome of Jacinda’s lobbying.
        A young Kiwi couple can earn big money to set themselves by working for an Australian mining company – the husband as a tradesman and the wife driving large mining dump trucks. Australia is not called ‘The Lucky Country’ for nothing although the author who named his book as such was being sarcastic.

A major problem during NZ elections is the lack of an objective media. A collection of left wing group think goons run the most influential news outlets in the country, and a major consequence of this is that National party MPs never suffer any enquiry or criticism from a right wing perspective. Voters are thereby denied the opportunity to obtain an all round understanding of their political views.

Mr Luxon is standing as a potential PM. We should know as much as possible about him. Here are ten questions from a right wing perspective I would like media to ask.

1. Given your management of Air NZ displayed a penchant for progressive politics, why did you join National and not Labour?

2. Is it true (as senior Labour officials claim) that you once applied to join the Labour party?

3. You say your favourite politician is Barack Obama. That you disliked some of his political ideas but admired his communication skills. What Obama policies did you disagree with?

4. What Obama policies did you approve of?

5. You sent Air NZ executives to a few of Bill Gate’s global economic and technical conferences. Did you attend any yourself, and do you have any regard for similar global political organisations such as the World Economic Forum?

6. Business sources have said the CEO of Virgin Australia was very critical of your management during the troubled Air NZ merger phase. Is this true and if so, what was his main criticism?

7. You have said you have “little time” for Donald Trump, so who is your favourite global politician right now?

8. Do you understand the meaning of the term “elite capture”?

9. Do you have any concerns about Chinese Communist Party influence in NZ politics?

10. National voted for Labour’s intensified housing bill, which will have significant long term impact on voter demographics to the disadvantage of the National party. Why were you and your Deputy Nicola Willis so enthusiastic about this bill?

If media asked these questions, it would help clear up a few uncertainties around Mr Luxon and also prevent them from portraying him as a totally different person to what he really is. As seems to be their current intention.

  Red – those are all important questions. Maybe someone on this blog who has contact with him could pass the questions on to him for some answers. In particular I want to know about what, if any, are his connections with the WEF or their main players. I suspect that he is very much involved.

    Hi Mawm.. as important as they are, don’t think there’s much chance of getting those questions answered and the doubts dispelled. Which is a kind of answer in itself I suppose.
    
    NZ media’s questions always come from the same pro-socialist direction, and can be paraphased as- (1) “why don’t you want to raise taxes” and (2) “why don’t you want to make govt larger and more powerful”.
    
    Mr Luxon usually apologises for giving the wrong impression and hastily assures them that he is indeed a fan of socialism. Says he is going to do it just like Jacinda but a bit more efficiently.
    
    He and most other Nats have not woken up to the fact that the questions the corrupt left wing media ask are not reflective of public interest. DeSantis knows this, and its why he won with a 20% margin.
    
    BTW, he was asked about the WEF by a listener on NewstalkZB a few weeks ago. At first denied knowledge of it, but then instantly realised that wasn’t going to fly so modified it to not knowing much about it. Think I’ve got the audio somewhere. I’ll look it up.

        Matt- Mr Luxon was not popular with the Air NZ unions. Some others in the party may have viewed him as a useful member but the Unions are the most powerful force there.

  Q2 He could well have applied to join the Labour Party in his youth. However what has that to do with the price of fish in a the contemporary political scene. Anyway why should such a youthful indiscretion from many years ago be held against him now. To err is human, to forgive is divine.
  
  Anyway I have a confession to make – I voted Labour in 1987 because I regarded Fran Wilde as a good and effective local MP and because I believed things were well on track with Rogernomics. However I would never vote for that bunch of Muppets that call themselves the Labour Party nowadays.

    Well, its a bit hard to accept Mr Luxon’s claim that he doesn’t really know what the WEF is when Unilever is a deeply embedded global partner in the organisation.
    
    During the time Mr Luxon headed up Unilever’s Canada division, the WEF is even listed as a partner/ advisor in its annual reports.
    
    Luxon as a corporate manager was right into that kind of thing, (sustainable business) not only with Unilever but with Air NZ too, and its inconceivable to me that he can be sincere in the denial he expressed during the NewstalkZB call transcribed above.

So I’ve been trying to watch “A Spy among Friends” on TVNZ on-demand, and I’m experiencing the same problems as when I tried to watch “SAS Rogue Heroes” – it keeps stopping, sometimes starting again by itself (having gone back a minute or so) and sometimes having to be re-started manually. Sometimes there’s a blue worm and sometimes it says something about functions not supported by my browser. No such issue on YouTube or Netflix on the same set.

Has anybody else experienced this and more to the point, been able to cure it?

(Since you ask: it would be excellent, with top-notch performances from the three main characters in particular, if it weren’t for the fact that it’s all so dark and shadowy. Entirely suitable for the time and the nature of the drama of course, but you do still need to be able to actually see what’s going on. I’ve now discovered that the book’s better, so if you’re keen on Cold War spy shenanigans, maybe get that instead)

  Foolish in that it will focus the efforts of terror groups against him. The Taliban know full well that any pilot/WSO in an Apache helicopter will have killed Taliban. But they now get to talk about it in relation to Harry and that will encourage terror groups.

Brothers:
My older big brother used to tease me lots when I was a kid.
One of his party pieces was to get up at family gatherings and announce “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dog and cat and E……” my name.
Everyone, including me, thought this was extremely funny.
However, I have now come to realise that this was actually very demeaning and probably psychologically damaging as it implied I was “different” from the family somehow and not worthy of general inclusion.
Think I will write a book about it.
PS – I didn’t fall into the dog’s bowl but was pushed over at the beach a few times and ducked in the river by my much bigger brother.
Lost my necklace that time.

Apart from the sad spectacle of Harry self destructing publicly, it’s ironic that he is enabling the media to destroy him as he accuses them of doing to his Mother. His comments about killing 25 Taliban seems particularly unwise on a number of levels as well. SWMBO just described him as a first class dipshit. Hard to disagree with that assessment.

It’s rather that science is subordinate to broader political, social and cultural forces, all of which incentivise research showing that the vaccines are safe and effective, and disincentivise research showing anything else. One kind of finding will get you promotion and grant funding, the other will – in the best case – simply be ignored. mainly, it seems that there’s a vast population of heavily vaccinated people out there who really, really want to believe, and will do so on any pretence.

There are so many people in denial, some out of self interest due to the consequences coming to them when the truth is finally out. Politicians, health officials, “experts”, “journalists.”

Some out of embarrassment at believing the lies.

Some out of concern because they’ve taken all the shots and are now realising it may not have been the best health decision they ever made.

Ramesh Thakur sums it up well. He is a former United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, and emeritus professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University.

With help from the media, social media and police, people were frightened, shamed and coerced into submission and compliance with arbitrary and increasingly authoritarian government edicts. The intense and unrelenting propaganda unleashed on the people by governments using sophisticated tactics of psychological manipulation and enthusiastically amplified by the media was astonishingly successful in a remarkably short time.

This has to stop.

Excess all cause mortality in the UK is going through the roof.

Deaths registered in England and Wales were a massive 20.7% above the five-year average in the week ending December 23rd, according to the latest data from the ONS.

At least the UK (unlike NZ) is acknowledging this disturbing data, though they are blaming it on everything but the mammoth in the room.

Carl Heneghan – Professor of Evidence-based Medicine, the University of Oxford, Director of CEBM and NHS Urgent Care GP investigates the latest nonsensical claims.

While the data from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities report an excess of cardiovascular disease mortality, the “independent” report produced by the UK Government does not attempt to understand what is causing the excess mortality from CVD.

In the last year, there has been an excess of 21,841 deaths with CVD mentioned on the death certificate. Our analysis suggests it isn’t a fall in drug treatment, and the drop in CVD risk monitoring can’t account for it, given the lack of evidence of an effect.

Given all its resources, the government could and should do better to get to the bottom of what is driving the excess in cardiovascular deaths. We’ll keep digging.

NZ’s response to excess mortality here? Change the law so that “sudden deaths” can be swept under the carpet.

The Coroners Amendment Bill has passed its first reading and will now be considered by Parliament’s Justice Committee.

Changes proposed include:

Allow the cause of death to be recorded as ‘unascertained natural causes’ when the Coroner has concluded that the death is from a natural cause and no further investigation is necessary;

Provide Coroners with the sole discretion to decide whether a coronial inquiry should also include an inquest, while maintaining a requirement to consult interested parties and consider their views; and

Allow written findings to be issued with the cause of death only, and not the broader circumstances in which the death occurred, if the broader circumstances are not considered by the Coroner to be of public interest.

Nothing to see here of course, it’s all about making things more “efficient.”//

  However, Sweden did achieve a vaccination rate of 73 percent. Sure not the 95 percent we got in New Zealand, but still high. Of course what was different about Sweden is that there were no lockdowns.
  
  My starting hypothesis would therefore be that the major cause of the high excess deaths in the UK – and even more so in Germany and Spain – are the result of lockdowns, not the COVID vaccine.
  
  Of course we will never know unless Governments admit there is something serious going on and investigate. I bet if you even asked Jacinda about high excess deaths in New Zealand she would get frowny and call it “disinformation”. It is shockingly disturbing that this gets no coverage in the New Zealand media.

    @BY – I agree with most of what you say. There is no doubt whatsoever that lockdowns have added to the increase in all cause mortality. But it is becoming impossible to ignore, the vaccines are causing serious problems. Particularly in younger males. Denmark have stopped vaccination in under 50s for a good reason.
    
    Your hypotheses should surely be enough to bring about a pause in the vaccination programme in everyone (except possibly the most vulnerable) while a proper investigation is carried out?
    The virus is not very deadly. Pausing the jabbing among the under 50s and relatively healthy would have no impact whatsoever?

  Ghost and Rex you’re right, but Westpac haven’t handled this well. I monitor my accounts daily so I was aware that some payments were no longer showing and would (presumably) come out some time after the stat days. The article says Westpac have apologised, but actually all they’ve done is post something on Facebook. As many people have complained on that post, Westpac will send text messages and emails to customers about scams but have not done anything to actually contact customers about this “technical issue”. People are also saying some payments have come out twice, and others that payments have gone to businesses they haven’t purchased from. I don’t know whether that is people’s poor accounting or faulty memory, or whether they are right, but whatever the situation Westpac have not done a good job with the PR.

    True. As a former Westpac employee I know they have never been good at PR. But as well as this issue they seem to be caving to the random (mainly elderly folk )who say they have been defrauded by “hacking” when such a thing is a one off amongst their thousands of customers and not proven. This sets a precedent and they have to be very careful.

    I have always found them to be accurate, and to show clearly-marked pending deductions/deposits on accounts before they actually apply them.

  Ten years ago I figured out they they’d made a mistake with their fees to my disadvantage in the hundreds of dollars.
  I went down and explained the error of their ways, but the guy initially didn’t understand & he wasn’t just a flunkey.
  Eventually it dawned on him and I received a refund.
  I was right pissed off so went home and prepared an invoice for my time.
  I didn’t send it.
  
  Years later several hundred more dollars was refunded out of the blue!

  I will add that the notion that ‘Labour/Jacinda has lifted (insert manufactured number) kids out of poverty’ is a contemptuous deceit and New Zealanders shouldn’t fall for it.
  
  The only measure that counts in my view is the number of benefit-dependent families, off state support and now supporting and sustaining themselves through their own endeavours.
  
  Those Labour people crowing about taxpayers paying more and more for the fuel to throw on the bonfire of state dependency of hundreds of thousands of New Zealand families should be ashamed of themselves.
  
  The massive explosion of state dependency over the last 40-50 years, rather than alleviating distress, I argue is a major cause of distress – and neither of our main parties appear to have any clue as to what to do about it.

  Now my Grandfather came here before WW1. He won a ballot to be able to purchase a farm. He did dairy farming in Reporoa. Now in Reporoa there is an “Otto” Road. I have a photo. It is say 5km from the old family homestead.

I wonder if the current ‘great NZ egg crisis’ will cause a few people to stop and think a bit about ‘cause and effect’ in markets and the implications of increased regulatory intervention – and will those who called for change now put their hand up and accept responsibility for the shortages and price increases? Or will they deny any responsibility whatsoever, as is common for many New Zealanders these days?

It looks like eggs are in short supply and could remain so for quite some time. This has already and will continue to mean consumers have access to fewer eggs and may miss out altogether at times, and the eggs they do find will be more expensive.

Not to mention food processor and manufacturer access to eggs and egg products.

I’ve noticed some people laying (excuse me) into the egg producers – calling them lazy or slow or not playing the game – after the recent coming into effect of the changes to how layers must be homed and looked after in NZ. This displays to me a profound ignorance of commercial reality.

It appears from what I’ve seen that the new regs and their compliance burden has not only forced producers to outlay substantial capital to reorganise their operations to colony or free -range but has also forced otherwise willing producers out of the industry unable or unwilling to make the investments necessary. Producer numbers and egg production numbers have dropped markedly from just a few years ago – causing the shortages and price increases.

The point I now make is that the people who called for the banning of caged layers, and the politicians who subsequently piled in, must also now accept the consequences of their actions. To somehow blame the producers who are now furiously trying to protect their livelihoods from changes forced upon them by others is demented. Perverse.

I’m just waiting to hear a Labour or Green MP say the whole thing is a ‘failure of capitalism’ and call for a taxpayer-funded state-producer ‘KiwiEgg’ to be established and solve our egg supply and animal welfare issues.

That would certainly be par for the course from the NZ left these days.

(Please note (Mike especially) I am not at all saying the regulatory changes to egg production is wrong or unnecessary. I personally have been buying exclusively free-range for the past, I’m guessing, 15 years as I’m not happy with caging and happy to pay more to get my eggs from free range operations.)

  Many are upset that, after everything that’s happened, these few congressmen are hurting the GOP. They clearly don’t have enough votes to elect someone else. And if they keep meddling, they might end up giving the Speakership to the Democrats.

        But woo-hoo! Trump has apparently personally phoned two holdouts and ordered them to vote for McCarthy. No word yet on what McCarthy had to say (or do) to get the boss to intervene.

Mmm … such a pleasure watching Daniel Faitaua presenting 1 News again tonight. It’s just so enjoyable seeing Mr Faitaua introduce the news and knowing that you won’t have to struggle to simply understand it.

Because Daniel Faitaua presents the news in English. Radical, I know, but it means I can settle back and simply enjoy listening to the news.

Long may it continue.
