White supremacy can nationalistically say stuff like the protection and preservation of our own ideals and beliefs is of the same importance as the protection and preservation of these lands, and the context appears to be about two decades ago – but White supremacy mostly pisses people off by their tactics.

Brown supremacy does need to be too prominent, not with this Jacinda Ardern led Labour Government – with its majority, its compliance of the media (subjected to interpretations of the Treaty as it goes – but stretching from the 1840s through to Mana o te Wai statements) and an Opposition only as strong as David Seymour.

The sole National candidate for the Tukituki electorate, a female whose career has been in the main in doing “journalism” for the mainstream media, was in business with the sitting Labour MP? Can’t be true.

A perfectly good candidate (an airline pilot) but bearing the unfortunate characteristics of white male-ism has withdrawn his nomination claiming unethical behaviour during the selection process?

Wasn’t new President Sylvia Wood going to fix all this kind of thing? Maybe the Nat party should return to selecting candidates on merit rather than their diversity component.

      As you know I have no regard for Slater/ Lusk, but bringing them in to this as some kind of consequential factor would seem like an attempt at distraction from what was a possibly prejudiced/ unfair selection process.

        Seems the pre -selection interview isdid not go well for him and he withdrew. The names of potential candidates remain confidential unless they are pre-selected although there is nothing to stop unsuccessful ones outing themselves if they choose

  Aha! Unfortunately the only news on this I could find was a Herald paywalled article, but the teaser gave sufficient info. I think I recently met the ‘perfectly good [male] candidate’ several weeks ago and whoever I was speaking to indicated interest in Tukituki (as I seem to recollect). We discussed how the National Party Board was selected, and I asked him if he had done ‘National101’ (an online course for budding candidates) and he had not, it seemed he thought it was not necessary. After some general discussion it became quite apparent (my opinion) that he was quite unsuited as a National candidate. What has transpired would seem to support my view. The selection system has worked precisely as intended.

      I’ve collegues and freinds who sit well to the left politically others who are I what id call populist voters that vote for the party who has the most popular leader at the time. Get on with all of them and they’re more than entiltle to their views.
      Personally I have pretty strong libertarian tendencies will hold my nose and vote Act despite my disappointment that they went all authoritarian when it came to vaccine mandates etc.

Although writing in an Australian context, pretty well everything Sandall wrote about here, in 1997, can be directly related to the tribalism now being promoted in New Zealand. Sandall was a New Zealander by birth so perhaps he had both Australian and New Zealand situations in mind. Yes, it’s a long read, but worth spending 20 minutes of one’s life reading it.

For observers on yesterdays thread, my promised “gang” story.

Nephew is a copper. One fine day, he and a couple of others (given the territory, they have to travel in at least pairs and often as a four if on a pickup) were asked to go and collect a certain esteemed gang member, apparently quite high up the hierarchy as he had a couple of things that he needed to discuss with members of the constabulary.

Off said 4 go, reach last known address. Nope, hasn’t been here for a while. They figure out he’s gone bush. Given their local knowledge and knowledge of this particular client and his compadres, they figure hey, its not too far, lets go look.

Off into the bush they go. Two hour bush bash they arrive at the makeshift encampment (had been used as a support base for weed operations). No sign of our protagonist. Fan out. 15 minutes later, found him; well, dead him.

Remember this character is a lead figure in one of THE hardest gangs in the country. They found him down by the creek bed. Appears he had slipped and hit his head on a rock, curtains. But the best bit?

This he-man was dressed in women’s underwear, matching, frilly, lacy, sexy. Whole 9 yards.

Best story Id heard in years.

A recent writer penned this deeply disturbing line….“One of the goals of system change is to supersede individual virtue.” This is discussing the Biden Green New Deal (only ‘Biden’ in name – it is his handler’s work) and similar moves by Trudeau in Canada and others including our own dear leader. (I presume she is still leader, or has she disappeared?)

“To supersede individual virtue” is one of the most evil and tyrannical statements I have ever read. It is the language of dangerous elites prepared to squander all that has been achieved by the magnificence of human ingenuity and individual brilliance. It is totalitarianism, Stalinism, Pol Pot-like dictatorship. It is coming. Be very afraid.

    100%. The current reforms would give labour 3yrs prior reform and 3yrs post reform to say…. either We are going to deal with the issues with our reform (prior) or We have implemented major changes and we need to work through the teathing issues (post).

Been thinking about waste, priorities and the first 100 days of a new government, whatever the stripe.

There are thousands of third party contracts funded by taxpayers, large suppliers and individual contractors.. Public sector staffers manage the contracts. In my experience, managing those contracts is a not a widespread skill in the public sector, partly because the managers are too busy. (And also in my experience, plenty are too busy because they are doing, not managing. But that is another story.)

So, how about a would be government specifically commissioning a list of contracts coming up for renewal in the first year if that’s not already in the plan. How are the contracted outcomes being reported and rather importantly are they being met. And of course are the outcomes still necessary and value for (taxpayer) money.

If there are deficiencies take a long searching look at the taxpayer funded folk who are supposed to be managing the contracts.

  Maggy, I knew Bill around the time of the ECA and he admitted that unions had lost their clout and would have to be more tactical in their actions. The gathering at Eden Park was not that popular with the ‘rank and file’, other than time off work. He was involved in kids’ rugby and was popular in that role.   Maggie P, I have also heard a rumour to that effect from someone in the relevant industry. But at this stage it’s only rumour to me because he heard it from someone else.
  
  What is worrying is that it’s entirely believable. It’s what happens when you prioritise culture over competency, feelings over training, and the signalling of virtue over safety in the skies.
  
  I can vouch for the anecdote that follows, because it was witnessed not that many years back, in a neighbouring country not that very far away.
  When commercial airliners fly from A to B, they need enough fuel to get to A to B, plus more fuel than that in case they have to divert to C or D, plus an allowance for bad weather / contrary winds etc. Therefore when they land, before the fuel tanks are topped up, a reading of the remaining fuel is taken to check that that airliner did in fact have enough fuel loaded prior to takeoff, to make the range of destinations, not just the desired destination.
  
  This particular time, the captain of a rather large wide-body airliner who had had to divert that aircraft from the original destination was summoned to the control tower to explain why he had not quite 10 minutes of flying time’s fuel remaining in his tanks after landing – as this was a gross breach of aviation safety regulations. He exploded wrathfully, pointing out that (a) he should never have had to divert in the first place and (b) the fault lay with air traffic control for diverting him and (c) anyway, carrying extra fuel that was never used was a waste of money particularly when (d) fuel is so expensive at his national capital’s point of origin and much cheaper to buy upon arrival in the Current Satanic Nation (that last phrase is, yes, paraphrasing).
  
  That’s how the fight started, and in the end it became a diplomatic incident when the pilot invoked his country’s ambassador to join his side, which culminated in apologies all round purely for face-saving.
  
  As the saying goes “you cannot reason a man out of a position that he did not reason himself into”. People like this fundamentally believe they are right and evidence is irrelevant – unless and until it supports their ‘Weltanschauung’.

I bought a gate ticket at Sky Stadium yesterday afternoon for the NZL-USA Association Football game.

No idea why but tickets were $24.55.
[In effect, of course, they were $24.60 for cash customers because the smallest coin of the realm is now ten cents.]

I gave the (20-something) clerk two banknotes – a twenty and a five.

Her first, very-bemused action was to push the five back at me.

Her second, even-more-bemused action was to (presumably) work out what change I should be given from the remaining twenty.

Time stood still…

I was reminded of my favourite poem, After Years (by Ted Kooser):

  I’m not trying to be harsh on the NZ women (am I allowed to say that?) but I read the match report. This statement made me choke on my cornflakes.
  
  While the endeavour and grit of the Ferns was admirable, the inability to fashion a decent goal-scoring opportunity was a disappointment, though they finally earned a corner in the 94th minute, after a late flurry.
  
  If that was the only positive comment they could come up with for the NZ performance, it must have been a pretty dire 94 minutes.

    This USA team – just as weakened as were the Black Fernz – were efficient in everything they did, had a couple of outstanding players on their right hand side and rarely, if ever, had their goal threatened by our World No. 22 mob.
    
    I counted five clear goal-scoring opportunities for Team USA in the first half and, for various reasons, none of them ‘stuck’.
    
    A similar number of chances fell their way in the second half and, this time, four went in, go figure…
    
    Okay, so the Fernz were outclassed – but even the best teams have to start somewhere, right?
    
    Sky Stadium has 10 (of the 64) games at the World Cup and je’s cute glutes were be there for each of them.
    My must-see match?
    United States vs. Netherlands
    It’s the obvious one, with the top two seeds clashing midway through the group stage on July 27.
    These two teams didn’t just meet in the World Cup final in Lyon back in 2019, they also played out a memorable Quarterfinal tie at the 2020 Olympics.

      Biscuit – I hear ya and appreciate your comments. I think my main problem was the reporting. It reeks of desperation to think that winning a corner in the dying seconds of a game is some form of notable achievement.
      
      Good luck to them, they will have trained and worked hard and as you say, everyone needs to start somewhere. Maybe the reporter could have just left that last comment out!

    Could have easily been 6 or 7.
    
    One of the issues the ferns had was unavailability of players at this time of year. They had players out of position at centre back who were too short, and were beaten in the air for goals twice by taller US forwards.
    
    The second match at the weekend is compromised by players out to play for the Phoenix the next day.
    
    It was really a chance for the coaches to see how some fringe players perform while up against it.
    
    Similar for the USA – that wasn’t their top line up.

San Francisco reparations committee proposes $5 million to each eligible black resident

I read that this morning and thought the satirical Babylon Bee had outdone themselves this morning.

In a spectacular display of what happens when woke politics intersects utter financial illiteracy, a San Francisco government advisory committee on reparations has recommended the city pay eligible black residents age 18 years and older $5 million apiece.

That’s just the headline recommendation of the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee (AARAC), which was created by the city’s board of supervisors amid 2020’s nationwide racial tumult.

Next on the wish list: “a comprehensive debt forgiveness program that clears all educational, personal, credit card, payday loans, etc.” The group said this measure will get blacks out of “an inescapable cycle of debt” so they can “build wealth.”

Rivaling the $5 million payment as an eyebrow-raiser, the committee also wants a welfare program that targets a $97,000 annual income for low-income blacks for the next 250 years.

There’s a slight problem though, somebody can’t count.

Financial acumen appears to be in short supply among the AARAC members. San Francisco’s budget is around $14 billion and there were about 47,000 African Americans in the 2020 census. If just 10,000 residents qualify, the $5 million payment alone would cost $50 billion.

But at least it’s representative?

Diversity isn’t a strength of the reparations committee either: All 14 members are black. However, there’s a vacant seat right now — available only to “an individual who has lived or is currently living in public housing.”

What could possibly go wrong? 🤡🤡🤡

  Aww, c’mon Maggie. Back in 1962 I had a 1956 Mk.I Zephyr Convertible – great car – called the ‘Vacuum cleaner’ – picked up all the stray fluff along the road. :-).
  Then in 1967 I had a Mk II Zephyr.
  Then in 1970 I had a 1966 Mk.IV Zephyr – excellent car, but the 2.5 ltr. V.6 was a bit under powered.
  Then in 1974 had a 1970 Mk.IV Zephyr Zodiac – great car, much better with the 3 ltr. V.6.

Food Price Index released by Stats NZ on Thursday morning shows food prices continued to rise in December by 11.3% annually, breaking the previous record of 11.4% recorded in April 1990.
Grocery food prices rose 11% in December when compared with the same month in 2021, and fruit and vegetable prices rose a staggering 23% annually. Kiwifruit, potatoes, and tomatoes influenced this movement the most, Stats NZ said in a release.
Stats NZ said the increases were due to rises “across the board” in all the categories measured.

  I struggle to think how those on lower incomes are doing, or those with larger families. If you’re living hand to mouth, and fuel, Power, Rent and food are all going up, as are interest rates, you will be shitting bricks.
