  The analogy is wrong at so many levels.
  To begin with the Treaty of Waitangi provides specific protection for maori lands, forests, fisheries and other treasures.
  Any conceivable government of New Zealand is going to provide specific support for Maori language and culture. Te Reo is an official language. Kura Kaupapa schools and Kohanga Reo have been funded for many decades.
  Most treaty settlements provide for a specific Maori/iwi role in conservation and heritage.
  Specific parliamentary seats have existed since 1867.
  To pretend there are not specific Maori interests that are protected by law is to deny the reality of living in New Zealand, pretty much since its founding.

    Hi Wayne, I acknowledge the Treaty as written and understood at the time. I have no problem with full and final settlements.
    
    I do have a problem with co governance, since it undermines democracy. Morgan is certainly one of those arguing for different rights for Maori; by definition this is purely based on bloodlines. So, I’m happy with my analogy.

        I understand the reason for the top-ups in the current round of settlements is to keep equity between the tribes. No tribe would go first into the settlement process if they might end up with less than another tribe.
        
        But I have also been told, by people with longer memories than mine, that we have been down the road of settlements before, only to have the claimants return and demand more.
        
        We should ensure that the whole truth is told about the history of our country. But we also need to recognise that the people of New Zealand today are not responsible for the wrongs of yesterday and should not be endlessly penalised for them.

        Some tribes have had 4 and 5 Full and Final Settlements. The problem is every generation comes back for more saying they want an inflation adjustment. Its like me selling my house then every few years asking the new owner for an inflation adjustment. Crazy.

        And forests and fisheries were not in the Treaty. They were in an earlier English draft but weren’t put in the final Treaty. Also the earlier English draft didn’t say ‘and all the people of New Zealand’ but the final Treaty (in Maori) did.

      My comment was not really directed at co-governance, but rather the somewhat sweeping statement that there are “no special rights”, when quite clearly there are, and have been for many decades.
      National has recognised the special rights of Maori/Iwi in relation to the Waikato River and Whanganui River. Also for Taiapure and matatai in respect of fisheries.
      In my view the opposition to co-governance ought not to be used as a stalking horse to pretend that Maori don’t have any specific rights, when the facts and practice show quite clearly that they do exist.

        Indeed special rights do exist but many are totally inappropriate, granted by National to appease Maori not because it was the right thing to do. Doug Graham started the whole shebang to avoid “blood on the streets”. You’re not old enough to remember that, Wayne. And I note that you’ve not mentioned Urewera and Tuhoe. The full and final settlements of the 1930s and before counted for nought – these won’t either. Bending over backwards has not worked. For a reasonable solution there must be two reasonable sides – there’s only one and that’s the end of being reasonable.

        The Treaty was a one page document. It’s intent is plain and clear. One people under British rule. If people want Maori property they need to reach a mutually agreed price and do a proper buy/sell transaction.
        
        Wayne, where pray tell does National think it gets a mandate for the kind of constitutional captains’ calls you are attempting to justify? Or do you think people vote for a kind of temporary dictatorship that can rule by fiat?

    No it doesn’t. Thats the modern interpretation. It says….
    
    Her Majesty the Queen of England confirms and guarantees to the Chiefs and Tribes of New Zealand and to the respective families and individuals thereof the full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates Forests Fisheries and other properties which they may collectively or individually possess so long as it is their wish and desire to retain the same in their possession; but the Chiefs of the United Tribes and the individual Chiefs yield to Her Majesty the exclusive right of Preemption over such lands as the proprietors thereof may be disposed to alienate at such prices as may be agreed upon between the respective Proprietors and persons appointed by Her Majesty to treat with them in that behalf.
    
    i.e. Ownership of the property, that they may sell and that the government may preempt.

In any event you also have to refer to the maori language version, which can’t simply be ignored. And do as the Court of Appeal has done for decades, which is attempt to synthesis the two texts.

        lol, you think that “lands, estates, forests, fisheries,and other properties” clearly encompases more tha real property? All the listed are are property and the fact the line ends with ‘and other properties’ clearly shows that ‘lands, estates and fisheries’ were being referred to as property.
        
        Anyway it doesn’t matter. What I was saying was that specific protection for maori lands, forests, fisheries and other treasures is not true. It doesn’t protect ‘other treasures’ and the protections granted are the same as those given to all English citizens, so nothing Maori specific. The generous intent by the crown was clearly the ‘incorporation’ of Maori into the commonwealth.
        
        Re Maori wording.
        I have to ignore the Maori version as I cant read it myself and would therefore rely on other interpretations. And as many are busy twisting the wording of the English version I must assume the same is in play with the Maori version.
        
        Anyway, it is clear that the english version actually covers the intent of the crown. The alternative to the treaty was what happened in other countries, which was far worse.
        
        I am proud of our treaty but hate the twisting of it

        Stuff, like the NZ-only edition of the Guardian, continues to provide a platform for Morgan Godfery.
        
        He’s a former trade union official and Labour Party staffer who until recently was, and maybe still is, paid by Otago University to teach entrepreneurship, the antithesis of socialism.
        
        When you go to the Guardian web site from an NZ internet address, you find an NZ version of the news site. It’s not a formal NZ edition, but a tailored version.
        
        If you go to the Guardian web site via VPN, which disguises your country, you get choices of US, Australian, and UK editions, but no mention of an NZ edition.
        
        So Godfery in the Guardian is for NZ consumption only.

        The ‘Maori version says different’ arguement is a problem. The only people capable of translating the Maori version are also those that have a vested interest in it saying certain things.
        
        Since English reading people can hardly agree what the English version says trying to base an arguement on the Maori version is just stupid. If there was a Klingon version I am sure that the Klingons would say the interpretation is something that favours them too.

      As I said above ‘forests and fisheries’ were not included in the final Treaty. They were in an earlier English draft. Even the final English draft from which the Treaty was transcribed into Maori did not include ‘forests and fisheries.

    I wonder if you might help me with something.
    
    Yesterday on LinkedIn Mike Jaspers was promoting co-governance, saying that the treaty requires it and socking it to anyone who commented against it.
    
    Just in the last few short years I’ve been hearing from certain quarters that ‘the treaty demands/requires equity’ that ‘Maori never ceded sovereignty’ and, again just very recently, from this 6th Labour Government that ‘the treaty demands/requires co-governance.’
    
    (I’d add at this point that in my untrained reading of the Treaty it says no such things, but that’s another matter.)
    
    If these points about ‘equity’ and ‘co-governance’ etc are correct as proponents claim, then presumably they are saying that the points were always correct but it’s just taken us 170-180 years to realise it.
    
    If that is the case, then why do you think that none of the previous five Labour governments raised these issues before?
    
    To my knowledge not once did Savage, Fraser, Nash, Kirk, Rowling or Lange ever campaign on it. Never to my knowledge did any of them claim co-governence is required by the Treaty. Nor that the Treaty demands or requires ‘equity’.
    
    In fact, at least one of those named specifically warned against it. I am informed that in 2000 Lange specifically said ‘you can have tribal sovereignty or you can have democracy but not both’ – that they are incompatible.
    
    (I note too this week that at least one crown entity has come out openly and claimed that ‘Maori never ceded sovereignty’ which surprises me as I thought it the official position of the NZ Government that they did and that only the Crown holds it.)
    
    So, might you have any thoughts on whether you think Jaspers and this current Labour Government are correct in their claims and that previous Labour governments were quite wrong – or is it more likely, as evidenced by past Labour Government and PM behaviour that all this is are modern inventions.
    
    Modern interpretations that have only been conceived recently – i.e. they are made up.
    
    Any thoughts?

      When I went to find the treaty to reply above the first all said something similar to what Wayne said. These were government sites. I then realised that what they were doing was not displaying the actual treaty, rather ‘interpretations’ of the clauses. In the interpretations that all used the phrase ‘Maori retain sovereignty of..”. Later down the page or on other pages the actual treaty wording is displayed. I wonder how long until only the interpretations are shown?
      
      It’s simply not the case and if you think about it the Crown would never have written a treaty that didn’t require sovereignty go to the crown exclusively. These interpretations are written in a way the mirrors the desire of the progressive left.

      In my view Maori did transfer sovereignty. Even if you take the Maori text of governance, it contains the essence of sovereignty. The right of Crown to govern. Not just over the settlers, but over all people in New Zealand. If it had only been the former, there would never have been much debate on February 5, 1840. Maori never expected to govern the settlers in any event.
      Maori also knew they were giving to the Crown all the rights of international relations, customs, tariffs, etc. All these things are the essence of sovereignty.
      As for co governance, the treaty does not envisage that, except on things of specific Maori interest,. I mentioned above the issues of specific rivers, fishing and some aspects of conservation.

        Co governance and sovereignty are mutually exclusive. At the time of the treaty there would have been zero consideration of co governance.
        
        Maori had interest in their property (food sources & land). That was covered by the same ownership as all other citizens. There was NO interest in conservation. That is part of the brown washing of Maori history. Maori were not the great conservationists.

        Maori were not a cohesive society and they didn’t know what sovereignty was. There was no one person overall in charge as there would have been if there was sovereignty. They were a mish mash of people from all over the Pacific and couldn’t even agree with each other on anything. They were marauding up and down the country killing and eating each other. Taking over land etc from the weaker tribes. You are reading an earlier draft Treaty Wayne. To know exactly what the Maori Treaty (the only one that matters) said you need to read the so-called Littlewood Treaty which was the final draft before it was transcribed into Maori.

      It may well be that at least some of the chiefs envisioned some form of governance partnership when they signed the Treaty – that they would continue to rule their lands, with the British ruling enclaves of foreigners, similar to the colonies in Hong Kong and Macao.
      
      But we are not living in the 1840’s anymore. Ideas on governance have changed since then. History has shown us that governance by a self-perpetuating elite (heriditary or ideological) never serves the best interests of the rest of the population. People, including many Maori, have campaigned at home and abroad, fought and died so that ordinary people can have an equal say in governance – one person, one vote. Surely that is the ultimate co-governance?
      
      Even if we all agree that the Treaty did indeed mean that, can it really overrule the system of government that we have evolved since then? On what basis? That the chiefs didn’t agree to any changes? Elites don’t generally want to give up power, privilege and unearned wealth. Why should the common people hand it back to them?

    yeah and why is English not an official language, Maori are over represented in parliamnet- so no need for the Moari seats. Maori culture/language is fine- but how about iwi and maori promote it- ie why is it the Govt job? Certainly don’t push it on anyone (maori included who don’t want to learn about it)

      The Royal Commission that recommended we adopt MMP also recommended we abolish the Maori seats, correctly stating there will be no need for them.
      
      Since then the number of Maori seats has increased, and I’ll wager a pound to a pinch of goat poo that after March 31 this year, gerrymandering (as referenced in the separate article today) will lead to a further increase in that number.

      Parliament , the courts , etc are all conducted in English.
      
      Maori is “de jure” an official language , along with sign (?)
      
      Tp rove what utter rot and window dressing this de juure situation is ;

        Good luck with that!
        Yesterday, I spent most of the day in an Analysis Ward in my local Hospital. What appeared humurous to me at the time and in vogue with kowtow’s post was that except for myself and a part Maori guy in the next bed, all were foreigners whereby they talked to their friends and visitors in foreign tongues.
        However, then the Dr did his rounds, and they all addressed the Dr in perfect (but accented) English. Even an Indian lady addressed the Indian Dr in English. The part Maori guy also addressed the Dr in English (no kia ora’s or bros).
        Strange eh, or was it just me looking for something to pass the time?

      As I mentioned above, there is no way the crown wanted to share sovereignty. There is no such thing as a partnership in the actual treaty, that is wording used by the well intentioned over the years that has ended up being written into laws. In my opinion it’s a foolish concept that is now beginning to cause major problems in the running of the country. The reason we ‘need’ co governance is because of the partnership that is written into all the government departments.

    Some points:
    1). Whether the Treaty gave specific protections such as those should be debated alas we let progressive judicial activists determine that for us with the adoption of one interpretation over another.
    2). The OP is correct in his summation. We are now in 2022 not in the 1850s. The world has changed and therefore we should take this opportunity to decide whether we should be applying laws on the basis of a 1850s treaty.
    3). Either we continue down this route of an ethno-oligarchy similar to South Africa and Zimbabwe and watch our best and brightest end up in other countries or we accept we are a true democracy and structure our laws and government to fit this model.

Co-governance work set to be put on hold
Willie Jackson says he’s leaning towards putting the Government’s co-governance work on hold next year

An election-year halt on co-governance work is the likely outcome when Cabinet meets this month to decide the next steps to fulfil commitments under the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson received the first draft of a declaration plan in June, which was expected to be signed off by Cabinet and then publicly released for consultation with all New Zealanders.

But Jackson wasn’t comfortable with the proposals put forward and knew Cabinet wouldn’t agree to it, so asked the governance group set up to consult and draw up the plan to go back and try again.

• So how long was the consultation with the cherry-picked Maori Elite?
• How long has Willie Jackson had a group trying to edit the Elite response into something acceptable to present to his Cabinet colleagues?
• Has Jackson actually done that presentation yet?
• And is preparation of a proposal to be publicly released for consultation with all New Zealanders going to actually take the timeline beyond this year’s Election?
• And how long a document itself is deemed suitable for public consideration, if it is to take an Ardernity of roughly two years to prepare it? It all isn’t going to fit into a snappy Jacindian slogan, is it?

If Government is going to can co-governance work between now and the Election, shouldn’t there be a statement to explain where it has progressed to so far, and exactly what Labour proposes to do in picking it up after the Election, perchance they manage to win?

  A problem with the Tarras airport plan is that the Christchurch Airport, which is majority owned by the the Christchurch Council owns it.
  
  Meanwhile, Christchurch City Council’s maintenance company, City Care, isn’t paying a dividend to the council this year. This is because it’s prioritising repayment of a $56 million loan from another Christchurch City Council company, Christchurch City Holdings.
  
  The loan allowed Citycare to buy an Auckland property-maintenance company Spencer Henshaw for $71 million.
  
  The Tarras airport proposal looks to be empire building by Christchurch City, which meanwhile squeezes hard its citizen ratepayers.

  I heard someone with a good suggestion the other day, apparently invercargill has a really long runway so reinstate the train to Kingston and have a ferry up the lake. 2.5 hour scenic ride for the tourists which also goes towards Milford Sound. Seems like a fun idea.

      Steve Otto – I would say that some people were so frightened by covid and government messaging around covid that they will do anything to keep “safe”. Even today here in Masterton there are people walking around with masks on the street. Someone said covid cases are up and so on goes the mask. I even saw a child the other day wearing a mask.
      
      Covid has become something of a way of life for some people. They have been conditioned to be afraid by Jacinda’s government. They still truly believe that Jacinda saved 80,000 people from covid.
      
      So yes if Jacinda was still the Prime Minister and she said that it is advisable to stay home because of covid then many New Zealanders would heed her advice.

        From 20 years ago. There were going to fine anyone $100,000 if they were selling masks as a protection against airborne viruses. Even the claim that they work for 20 minutes is only true for droplets, not for the viral particles.
        Best description there was it’s like trying to keep mosquitos out with a chainlink fence.
        
        Masks do nothing to stop the spread of a virus. They might make stupid or brainwashed people feel a bit better. But they offer pretty much zero protection.

        marcw – if people are immune compromised and/or are worried about being infected then best they stay home. The normal masks that people wear do NOTHING to protect them.
        
        The N95, if properly fitted, MIGHT help a bit, but a virus can enter through your ears or eyes anyway.
        Stay home, keep the home well ventilated, never go into crowded places, keep your distance from others. It MIGHT keep the virus at bay. For a while.

  She was forthright then too, and saw through and exposed the leftist bs when few others did. Her commentary then, and now, is reminiscent of the late Warren Berryman (who died far too young at 64 years of age) and partner Jenni McManus, amongst the last of the truly investigative journalists in NZ.

Yesterday this YouTube video was posted, which has a body language expert analysing Cindy’s resignation speech.

What he points out was how often Cindy pursed her lips during the speech – it was very noticeable.

This is what pursed lips this usually means to body language experts:

“Pursed lips are a classic sign of anger, including when it is suppressed. It is effectively holding the mouth shut to prevent the person saying what they feel like saying. This may also be an indication of lying or withholding the truth as the person stops themselves from telling the truth.”

Was Cindy very angry? And was Cindy was lying or withholding the truth?

      Now, I only tune in for the News & Weather….and perhaps something in the very early hours (3am-5am) if I’m awake.

There were a few formal references – yes (e.g. Waka Kotahi NZTA, Aotearoa New Zealand Public Media (ANZPM) ) and a minor slip by McCulloch (Waka Kotahi only) in the weather article live feed – but nothing substantive really.

I suspect Sir Bob Jones’s prediction a while back that Nat/ACT will get 60% of the vote in the Oct election is about bang on. Remains to be seen how much is ACT v Nats. ACT is positioned well to continue to pick up more as voters decide that 50%+ to Nats is not what they want. Potentially ACT will hit 20% – maybe that is more than where Labour ends up. Hipkins will quickly be found out and the slide will continue.

    Pro: If they are sliding and expect to slide more by election day, then going early reduces the carnage.
    Pro: If Hipkins can get a dead cat bounce and get them into a winning position for a short while (until his true uselessness becomes apparent) then going early might squeeze them through. But is that likely?
    However….
    Con: If they are going to lose either way, then they might as well keep the current gig alive as long as possible.
    Con: If Hipkins really is good, maybe he can claw back Labour support over the next 7 months.
    
    I think it is too late for the Pros to have a positive effect, so they just need to ride it out.

I’ll be attending a family birthday on Sunday, but several family members are still distraught about HER resignation so I’ll have to stick to the weather and everybody’s health.
Talking about the weather; the 20 days from 20th January used to be the best weather for a holiday. Certainly not in 2023. Usually it gets above 30 in that period. Humidity? It is too cold to be humid. Today I need a jersey! Grass growth? My cockie friends tell me the pastures are waterlogged.
It is all about climate change.

On Auckland’s North Shore is a reserve: Rewi Alley Reserve.
Near the children’s play area – two or three swings, a slide, some jungle jim gear – is a homage to Rewi Alley, QSO MM. He’s memorialised with a large, imposing bust atop some sort of monument that describes him.
Ever since I was a boy I’ve been puzzled by Rewi Alley, the former New Zealand World War 1 decorated soldier who went to China in the 1920s.
He helped Mao Tse-tung (Mao Zedong) overthrow the oppressors of the Chinese proletariat and fling off their chains and put said oppressors in front of firing-squads.
Then he helped Mao chain up the Chinese people all over again with a different set of oppressors. That was their Liberation.
He must have known what Mao and his Communists were like. And because he spent the rest of his life in China he must have approved probably because he was of a class that benefited from the Chinese people being enslaved.
David Lange’s government made him a companion of the Queen’s Service Order.
The reason for the foregoing is it’s a rotten day here in Auckland. I woke up early and found myself reading Josie Pagani’s column on Stuff.
I don’t read a lot of stuff in Stuff including Mrs Pagani’s offerings. But Karl du Fresne recently wrote that she was the most clear-eyed contributor Stuff has. This morning Sean Plunket lamented that she has ties to another radio network and so can’t be on his show.
Anyway, this morning Mrs Pagani reminisced about how ‘Uncle Rewi’ had inspired her as a child to become a Left-winger.
I’ve never understood the Left’s willingness to make excuses for Communist tyrants and their tyrannies and their crimes against humanity.
Perhaps it was down to my Roman Catholic upbringing. Perhaps, too, my Polish brother-in-law who with his family endured the horrors of Soviet labour camps as a boy.
Perhaps it was also my reading about Ho Chi Minh and his Vietnam war – freeing the people from their colonialist and capitalist oppressors and replacing them with new ones.
The Left could jeer from the footpaths at the thousands of people who marched along Queen St, Auckland, behind Archbishop James Michael Liston in protest against the Warsaw Pact’s invasion of Czechoslovakia.
The Czechs, you might remember, were in 1968 trying to live a little more freely and independently of their Communist masters in Moscow.
I could go on.
But back to Josie Pagani. I don’t think I followed her column all that well; it’s the galloping alzheimer’s, probably.
But she was remarking on how the Left are so preachy. Are they what!?
I call the Left the Pharisees and the Sin-Inventors of our age.
They’re like that fourth century Syrian ‘saint’ who sat atop a pillar for decades so he could look down on the rest of the people and point his judgmental fingers at them and condemn them for not being good enough.
They preach. God, do they preach! They are virtuous. They are holier-than-the-rest-of-us. They know what’s best for us.
They want to dictate with all the fervour of priests, preachers, and apostles The Right Way To Live. Thou Shalt Believe in Climate Change. The Shalt Believe that Eating Animal Flesh is Wicked. Thou Shalt Not Drive a Vehicle That is Powered By Petrol, or Diesel.

    In 2017 the Labour polling was so low that it was about 50/50 that Labour would get any List seats and it was looking highly likely that Andy Little, the party leader at the time, wasn’t even going to be an MP!
    
    Are they in a better position at the moment?

My interpretation of the treaty was that it was a good faith agreement signed in 1840 which suited all parties and none signed under duress.
From a European perspective it was stating that Maori tribes maintain ownership of what they already have.
However, it also states that British law will apply to all New Zealand, including Maori ownership. In other words, the treaty was saying, Maori ownership was treated as if it was owned by Pakeha with its law-based protections.
You can tell this was the understanding at the time based on Maori behaviour. They did not behave as if there were separate rules for Maori. For example, they gave up slaves and eating people based on British law. That was a huge sacrifice for Northland Maori at the time and hugely preferable to the recent past where 25% of Maoris had been killed by tribal warfare.

  Clare Szabo does not live in the electorate and has no visibility.

How the Treaty fits into 2023 is possibly one of the most important issues facing NZ. My interpretation of the Treaty has been that it was drawn up to protect Maori. The British government never intended for New Zealand to become a colony this position was supported by the missionaries. The European population in 1840 was vastly outnumbered by Maori and consisted of whalers, sealers fortune hunters. What changed was Wakefield who pushed the colonisation of New Zealand. The rest is history.
I am prepared to be shot down by KBs who are more knowledgeable than me. I think it was Anne Salmond who made the comment “We are talking past each other”. I guess her name could raise the blood pressure of some.

To sell Hipkins as refocused, reprioritised, refreshed and reenergised etc they have to say Cindy was unfocused, confused and lack luster.

They cannot keep running the hagiographies for Cindy because they offer the comparison with Hipkins and essentially tell us Cindy was awesome so, by extension, Hipkins is worse.

Nope, they have to say “Cindy, oh, that old thing. Pretty rubbish really. Nothing to do with the Labour Party. No, here is the Fresh New Labour you will vote for: Hipkins! Refreshed and renewed Hipkins, not worn out, boring old Cindy.”

    What I was pointing out (and I think clearly enough for you to understand), is that they can’t have it both ways.
    
    They cannot keep Cindy elevated to sainthood and simultaneously sell Hipkins as a new “refresh” that fixes everything that is broken.
    
    It’s the same problem that they have in car sales. They push the 2022 model as being the most awesome thing ever, until the new 2023 model comes along. Then the square headlights of the 2022 model are out of date and the round headlights on the 2023 model are what you must have.

Three young people convicted of murder have successfully appealed their life imprisonment terms and had their sentences reduced.

Christopher James Brown and Georgia Rose Dickey, who were aged 19 and 16 when Jack McAllister, 19, was stabbed to death in Invercargill in 2017,

The appeals were heard last July.

The other, unrelated, case before the court was Katrina Roma Epiha, who was just shy of 19 when she fatally stabbed Alicia Nathan, 32, at a Christchurch house party in 2017.

In each case the terms of life imprisonment and were quashed and replaced with fixed sentences – 15 years for Dickey, 12 years for Brown and 13 years for Epiha. Their minimum periods of imprisonment before each could go for parole were also reduced to reflect their reduced overall sentences.

  The same thing could happen in the very likely case of NAT/ACT winning the coming election.

So, yet again last night RNZ put on a piece on the desirability of the living wage. This was in the context of a possible further increase to the minimum wage.

Yet again, only interviewed a business owner who thought it a good thing and paid her staff the living wage at minimum.

Yet again, failed to offer any sort of counter-argument or interview a person prepared to point out the negatives.

Yet again, only read out listener texts in support.

Yet again, read out a listener text which pushed the ‘if they can’t pay the living wage then they shouldn’t be in business’ line.

Not once do we hear the arguments about minimums set too high can cause job losses.

Not once do we hear that minimums set too high can lock the young, and/or unskilled out of the market.

Not once do we hear the arguments that society and the people concerned are far better off getting into work, any work, even at a low wage, then pick up the skills and behaviours that mean within 6-12 months better offers come along.

Not once do we hear the downsides of the notion that we can legislate our way to prosperity.

And, just for a chuckle, never do we hear from those who support the ‘if you can’t pay the living wage then you shouldn’t be in business’ line – that therefore the government should immediately suspend any and all payments to any private organisation who without taxpayer support could not do so.

Let’s start with the NZSO, myriad other arts, dance, music organisations, hundreds of ‘service provider’ businesses that purely rely on taxpayer money.

After all, we should be consistent in our policies shouldn’t we?

  When the ‘living wage’ became a thing, back in the day, The Treasury’s analysis was that the principal beneficiaries were young single workers and government revenue.
  
  The original calculation parameters didn’t last long. The first time they were applied for the new ‘living wage’ there was panic in the ranks at the new higher amount, and the calc was quickly scaled back.

So, after a few days thinking about it I have now reached the conclusion that Ardern was pushed.

It’s been abundantly clear for months that the likelihood of an Ardern-led Labour victory in October has dropped massively since 2020 and still dropping weekly. I’ve personally believed their defeat a near certainty.

There are many, many people reliant on their incomes and political favours from a Labour Government – and a National/ACT victory would be a bad outcome for them, personally. Here I include Labour Cabinet members, the wider Labour caucus, party officials and spin doctors, and the interest groups who do so well under a Labour administration – the unions particularly but more than just them.

They will have seen the writing on the wall and they know which side their bread is buttered on.

They will have known that to replace Ardern, have her depart, and then start afresh with a new leader who is all bright and sparkly (and guaranteed very favourable news media coverage as we have seen) and saying that ‘it’s a new era’ and ‘the past is the past, now we’re going to reprioritise and focus on the things that matter’ is their only practical way of trying to create some space Labour and public’s anger over how Labour has treated them.

As long as Ardern was PM, she could never, while retaining even a shred of credibility, get up and say “Sorry, I’ve been wrong all along, 3 Waters is wrong, co-governance is wrong, we got large chunks of Covid wrong, we screwed up the economy and look at food prices now, we’ve dropped the ball on crime…. but now we’ve realised it, we’re going to reset and everything will be right from now on.”

She’d look an idiot, or worse a liar, and people would hurl even more righteous fury at her saying “we’ve been telling you that you were wrong all along.”

A new leader can though. They can subtly pin the sins of the village onto the scapegoat and drive the goat into the desert taking all the village sins with it.

I think Ardern has been spoken with last year, and was presented a plan that she has willingly accepted, knowing that unless she does Labour’s electoral success is doomed.

She might also have welcome the resultant relief from all the stress, especially of a looming defeat.

It will all be organised down to the tiniest detail and, in return for her acceptance, she will be supported by ‘Saint Jacinda’ narratives and endless PR on her supposed strong points that of her empathy, kindness etc (and steering absolutely right away from her actual results).

I argue that the fact that within 24 hours of her announcement, even less in some cases, all the left-leaning news media pundits and assorted academics and opinion columnists were in full spin mode putting it all down to misogyny – was a clear sign of narrative pre-planning. Pre-seeding of narrative lines and tactics.

Remember, Ardern never mentioned misogyny – but within 12-24 hours damn near every writer was mentioning it.

Yep, she’s been pushed. It’s Labour’s only hope.

And now many, many folk in and around the NZ Labour Party will be nervously chewing their fingernails hoping their plans will work out.

  I think you’re spot on with a number of points, however if she was pushed I wonder who it was that did the pushing?
  
  One of the rumours going round is that she was planning to demote some of Maori caucus – Mahuta in particular and most likely Willie Jackson, and that they weren’t having a bar of it. Certainly when Ardern made the announcement she was distressed, and it looked to me as though she’d heard the bad news and drafted something about 30 minutes beforehand.
  
  With regard to defeats though, you’d think she’d be used to them since she couldn’t win Auckland Central off Nikki Kaye in 2 attempts, and had to go to Aunty Helen’s safe-as-houses electorate when she bailed to the UN.
  
  Mind you, she’s risen massively, in her own eyes, since then, so the fall from grace would be further and harder.

The Court of Appeal in quashing life sentences of three young people convicted of murder:

“We must, however, not trespass upon Parliament’s domain… Our judgment does not have the effect of creating a special category for young persons convicted of murder.”

Although being a youth was not by itself enough to establish an injustice to avoid a life sentence, mitigating circumstances of the offending and an offender’s personal circumstances could count on top of their age, the Court said.

Becroft has talked of NZ’s advanced ways of dealing with youth offenders.
