  IMHO EVs will go the same way as Beta recorders. They will be replaced by highly efficient ICE’s powered by cheap cleaning burning renewal synthetic fuels. Research is already underway.

      That’s interesting! My nephew bought a new Tesla Model 3 a year ago, thanks in part to the generosity of the long suffering New Zealand tax payer.
      The car is now back on the market. Reason? Poor EV infrastructure making it stressful and not practical for regional driving.
      I have a feeling EV’s, contrary to what the climate enthusiasts will have us believe, are going to have limited uptake in this country, unless the electricity grid and distribution get a major overhaul, or there is a breakthrough in technology.
      I am not holding my breath for either in the short to medium term.
      Happy to stick with my Subaru Outback for now.

        I’d be interested to learn about how well 2nd hand EVs hold their value.
        I don’t know how true it is, but I’ve heard that in the UK people avoid 2nd hand EVs like the plague.

        Diesel 4×4 ute here…
        I have been dozens of places in the last couple of weeks that nothing else would go. We had no power for 6 days what good is an EV then?
        I am about to take a tonne of wet shit to the dump… going to tow that with a poxy EV?
        
        I mean its not great to drive despite being top of the range and only a year or so old. I would prefer to drive a dual turbo Porshe 4×4 … but I am not going to take a $200K machine half way up the doors in filthy water am I?

        Yep. Even if I could afford one I would not buy an EV. Like Albie, I’m going to happily stick to my 2007 Subaru Legacy B sport Wagon – 3 Ltr. boxer engine, power boost settings if need – up to 320 H.P and drives like its on rails. Comfortable & great cruising. Its now only worth about $8k, and had 330,000 on the clock – replaced torque converter 6 months ago and drives like a new car.

        Tesla driver here: I’d like to report that my car is safely tucked up until the terrain approaches civilised again. In the meantime my preferred vehicle is a big 4WD. With a snorkel. And a tow bar. What you cry: how can both these things be true?! Because, as with all tools, a vehicle needs to be task appropriate. Which is why:
        A) the government needs to stop telling us what to buy on account of they have no idea about our individual needs
        B) we need to remember that who owns what is not the issue: the common enemy is a government that is wasteful (EV subsidies – if you can afford a new EV you do not need a government handout) and totalitarian (telling us which type of vehicle we should buy)
        C) Ironically if we are concerned about pollution, the problem is not with the well maintained ICE cars that most people on this blog likely own, it’s with the poorly maintained cars owned by people who are doing their best just to survive. That’s where our anti-pollution vehicle subsidies (if any) are going to be best spent. But that doesn’t make for sexy headlines. And it’s much more fun for the government if those that can afford change are busy fighting each other over trivial things such as EV vs ICE.

        Just sold my 2004 Outback 3.0R Ltd. Got tired of getting only 14l/100 suburban and 9.5 on a trip. Towed a trailer of sports gear 300km and it drank at 20l. And it has to be premium fuel.
        
        Bought a 4 year old Passat Alltrack Bitdi 500Nm diesel couldn’t be happier. 5.5l/100km on a trip, 7.5 suburban and 8 or so towing that trailer.
        
        Looking at 1000km from a tank of fuel. Once the Ukraine war has ended diesel prices will drop

        Yeah rouppe.
        My 3.o ltr. gets 9.6 kms / ltr around town and 11+ kms on a trip. That’s pretty bloody good for a 3 ltr. 300 hp vehicle. 9.6 km equals 22 mpg, and 11+kms/ltr is equal to 30 mpg.
        I compare that with my old 1956 Mk.I Zephyr back in 1963 14mpg around town and 18 mpg.on a trip. That was a 2.4 ltr straight 6 giving around 70 BHP. Even my 16 y/o Subie is more than twice as economical, 50% bigger & 4 times more powerful. Huge improvements over 60 years.

        A true EV story. I live in Greytown so that means a trip to the airport in Wellington and back is approximately 155 kms ish. On a good day my diesel Land Rover will do the round trip excluding waiting for pickup or painful goodbyes in around 2 hours 20 minutes but sometimes up to 2 hours 45 minutes. My Nissan Leaf has a range of approximately 220kms but real world around 180 kms so you would be forgiven for thinking you could drive to the airport and back without much stress but you’d be wrong . The only time I attempted it goes something like this. By the time the Leaf had got to the top of the Rimutaka hill road it had used 55% of its battery charge and although regenerative breaking had replaced much of it by the time I had descended it was obvious I wasn’t going to go to the airport and back on a single charge. There is a fast charge in Upper Hutt so I continued on my journey. On the return trip to say I wasn’t concerned about getting back to the charger would be an understatement in fact I was driving up the motorway sweating like a glass blowers arse but I made the charger with about 37% of charge left. The problem now was that there was one car charging and three waiting. Average charge time 20 minutes so an hour and 35 minutes before I could hook up ( some people weren’t waiting with their cars so a wait incurred) and twenty mins for me. All in all it took around two hours to get enough juice to make it over the hill and home even though the car claimed to have enough range to do it without charging ,having experienced the drive up the Rimutaka I knew I wouldn’t make the summit . I’m not sure how much diesel and road user the Landy would use on the trip but it would be cheap when the stress, time, frustration and price of the kebab spent waiting to charge up we’re taken into account. In summary Landrover equaled comfort reliability and stress free motoring Leaf equaled stress , anger, frustration and anxiety. No fu$king contest she’s gone.

    A year ago I couldnt figure why the West didnt throw everything at Russia by arming Ukraine with the best weapons and weapon systems in bulk. After a while it dawned on me that the long term plan is to suck Putin in by depleting his miltary and economy to the extent that apart from Nukes he has nothing left. In addition hoping China will support Russia thereby weakening their military and economy in the process.
    As always since WW2 this is a proxy war between the West and Communism. The question is will Putin unleash his Nukes at some point. My understanding is the guy is terminally ill so he could decide to go out with a literal BANG.

        Russia has a lot of Natural Resources, but lacks the funds and infrastructure to utilise them.
        
        China has funds and infrastructure potential but lacks the Natural resources to make it work.
        
        The “Northern Resource Area” is something that the Asian powers of the day have looked at with interest. Putin looking towards China may be a problem in the future, especially when you look at the world map.
        
        Remember that the 2 countries were in an undeclared war situation in 1929 and 1969….

      Why doesn’t he leave the hysterical claims like those ones to the insane Greens?
      It would not be controversial to point out that individual weather events are not directly attributable to ‘climate change’, but no, he goes all out and resorts to a personal attack and basically brands Pugh as a climate denier.         For that to be true, you would need to demonstrate that no storm of that magnitude had hit New Zealand between (say) 1500 and 1980. Of course several would have been experienced.

Floods and cyclones – big bucks coming and someone / everyone has to pay one way or another.

There has already been some research done in Australia about possible effect of the Tonga volcanic eruption on severe floods in Victoria and NSW late last year, and believe similar work is to get under way here.

Point being, if there is a level of cause and effect from that catastrophic incident, then that needs to be dealt with differently from a blanket approach to what used to be called AGW before that term became problematic for some reason. It’s called solving the right problem.

  After all, it is a wise man who knows his own father.

        In the Census I am having difficulty in that I am deciding whether I want to register as a Maori but cannot decide which Iwi I want belong to.
        Really it is who has the most money that I would join.
        After all the Census caannot be wrong as it is a Government Oganisation.
        I assume that results cannot be moderated like so many things nowadays, like GCSE for example.

    Lobby groups need census (free) data for their cause, which is often research paid for by taxpayers. Like the Health Research Council that doesn’t seem keen on funding projects without the required level of ethnic component.

      First question to ask before using the census is to ask can we not do this through a much cheaper sample survey? (Declaration of interest, I get a small retainer from Curia /s)
      
      And while the marginal cost of using the census looks low, you very quickly run into problems of reduced compliance and loss of social license (evidenced on this thread) at a cost to the whole census.

I sadly read in the Herald today that such as pensioners are starving as their pensions do not allow anything that they might have once enjoyed.
Minister Woods says that rental property numbers have increased – no proof of course, as my view is that she is veteran liar.
Sadly it is the costs to live eg rentals and other costs of living – food for example that keep going up whereby it is no longer economic to be a rental landlord.
This Government has made it quite ridiculous to own a rental – eg tax changes so those who can least afford it suffer the most – 101 Socialism.
Many of course have never owned a property and the diversivication of what we knew as a family has contributed to their financial plight. Helen Clark and her close colleagues started by destroying the family unit.
It will take generations to correct this as there is no way that a low wage economy and social welfare can help reorientate this in the short term.
Simply too few people actually pay taxes and we continue to lose the better young ones overseas – who can blame them ?
I can only hope that thos who elected this Government think twice at the election, as if they carry on, they will only get the same.
Not sure any possible new incoming Government will have the answers either, as to ameliorate will require drastic action and that will not happen.

  Wednesday the wife and I were at the Whangarei Salvation Army donating what we could. While at Reception awaiting a receipt, an elderly man asked us if we were donating. He was retired and holding a loaf of bread he had received from the Sallies. He explained that he was waiting to receive some laundry powder as his finances prohibited him purchasing same.

    It is tough on a fixed income. Pension for me, $238 for my partner job seeker allowance. There is really no way a 63 year old can get a job.

      There was a story on $tuff this am (can’t find it now)
      about a free food outlet in Christchurch and how the demand is increasing.
      A “customer” was interviewed and said he needed the free stuff so that he would have enough money to keep buying his tobacco which was “his right”.
      Another one said (different story) that they had to access free food regularly so they could keep paying for the internet.
      A lot of the (less entitled) older people I know don’t smoke and have never had internet or even a mobile phone in some cases.

  The USAF ordered 8 F-15EX in 2020, when Trump was President. In the 2 years since Biden became President they’ve ordered a further 136.
  
  So Biden didn’t wipe this. Or even attempt to wipe this.

    Maybe they’re headed to Ukraine – they’re not that expensive compared to FA18s — F32’s, and being older, Ukraine pilots are probably faimiliar with them & don’t need time-expensive training.

      The -EX is a bit like Grandpa’s axe … looks the same from the outside but has been completely rebuilt with up-to-date stuff on the inside. Great plane for their role. Can carry a huge load over long distances. Would struggle in hotly contested airspace today, but perfect for homeland defence or in theatres where you’ve already suppressed air defences.
      
      All the talk re Ukraine is of F-16s, not F-15s. Simpler lighter plane with a lower logistic footprint.

        But maybe, just maybe, it’s a made up saying with no basis. The chain of custody of the supposed Hunter Biden laptop is so f#*%!d up that you cannot, should not, trust any of it. Yes there are authentic emails on it. But there are also fabricated emails on it, too. And no one can confirm the authenticity of the ones the right wing is using as “proof”.
        
        That is why the mainstream media have never touched the Hunter laptop story. Even Fox News wouldn’t touch the story. (Fox News as in the news side, not Fox News as in the Tucker/Hannity “we’re not journalists” side).
        
        In the end the New York Post couldn’t get any of their veteran journalists to put their name to a Hunter Biden laptop story so they got Hannity’s former producer (who’s now at Breitbart) to put her name to it. And note she’s never put her name to any other story in any credible media. All of which just deepened the credibility gap.

        A number of problems with that objective.
        
        First is that the West is taking damage as well, far more so than expected.
        
        Second, given how weak Russia and its military have been shown to be by this invasion, I don’t think they mattered anywhere near as much as China.
        
        Third, the USA doesn’t have much to show for a number of recent wars that lasted a long time and reached a negotiated end, all the way back to Vietnam and ending with Afghanistan. It’s more than three decades since the US had a solid win, and even then the result was more ambiguous than desired. I’m not keen on another decade-long+ war costing cumulative hundreds of billions or perhaps even trillions by the time it’s done.
        
        Back in the days of the Cold War I supported this sort of thing precisely to weaken the USSR – but Russia is a shadow of that. China is, if anything, more powerful than the USSR were.

        What real damage is the West taking? Oil prices spiked, but are now back to pre-Feb 2022 prices. New arrangements will provide energy security of supply going forward. Anything else is minor and tolerable.
        
        The best parallel is the USA’s military aid to Israel, not the US involvement in Vietnam or Afghanistan. There’s no US feet on the ground, no steady drip of US casualties.
        
        But the chance to cripple Russia’s military for just a hundred billion USD pa is a no-brainer.
        
        Meanwhile China is surely having to re-calculate its thoughts on Taiwan. Surely they’ve seen the West’s strategy of slowly choking and eroding Russia’s strength and economy. Surely they’ve noticed the West’s willingness to use sanctions. Surely they know their own vulnerability to a naval blockade of their energy imports and raw materials. Surely they can see the West ramping up military production to better support wars of attrition. They have to be weighing up whether invading Taiwan would be worth the long-term cost to their economy.

  SO, I watched a lot of that visit by Pete and what struck me is that beside his political spin he has the same possum in the headlights look as our PM. There is no footage of Pete hugging anyone and his 7am visit was mentioned as merely to escape locals attending his photo fest. Non MSM news show he was given a hard time by people in the crowd but of course he didn’t hang around long before he climbed aboard his black people mover vehicle.

I have tried hard not to fall prey to some of the many conspiracy theories in circulation. It is not that I think they are all wrong – it’s the problem of knowing what sources are accurate and truthful and which are embellished or plain wrong. Even some so-called fact checkers are flat out untrue or biased.

It seems really soundly based and substantiated. Are there other elements to the story that are missing? Be interested in hearing opinions from those who have followed the Covid issues more closely. It is easy to just believe the USA Government had little interest in cures, remedies, solutions. Why are there not more honest and concerned doctors speaking out? Where is the revolt?

    I was at my Doctors yesterday for an appointment to check my rare latest affliction (Polymyalgia Rheumatica – are fairly common, not well understood affliction in some people over 50 )
    We often chat quite openly, and I comment that the treatment/information by the government over Covid – with the NZ Medical Society ? in full agreement mode has left me with very little trust at all in our medical professionals.
    He didn’t say anything, but with a bit of grin on his face, lifted hid eyebrows in agreement. He then said there are many people in the establishment and information he would not trust.
    Go figure. I suspect there are many like him.

      I was diagnosed with the same condition 5 years ago. Public health in Counties Manukau have been fantastic in setting appointments with specialists and follow up. Trouble is, no cure except to take fairly heavy drugs which I’m not willing to at this stage.

        Albie, they’ve got me on prednizone, which is a steroid based medication. It has been around for donkeys years, and with time limitations is a very effective remedy. I’ve been on it 3 days, and I am half way back to normal already, although they say minimum 3 weeks, normally 1 – 6 months CAN give full recovery – so I’m happy to go along with it. At 81years old, and still plenty of work & life left in me, I want to get it out of my way if at all possible. It is otherwise quite debilitating, I have found, particularly with the brain fog & vertigo.

Now several months down the track, only 12 percent of these kids have been vaccinated. Now the health authorities are acting all shocked at the low vaccination rates. 😂

  200 km commutes are common.
  
  That is a barrier to EV uptake in the USA, given petrol is so cheap.

    Sure, it is not a rewriting of history, but it is a silencing of history when monuments and statues are torn down, as some are proposing for the Wakefield monument. One doesn’t have to defend the person in order to defend the monument.
    
    Instead, add a plaque giving a balanced view of the person. If Wakefield’s behaviour was problematic, put it on the plaque, but do that with monuments to other historical figures such as Te Rauparaha; otherwise, it does look like selectively rewriting history.

  The Three Waters part of the speech was good. Better late than never. But Luxon reiterated National’s full-in commitment to Net Zero and Paris, commitments which are at odds with growth and reductions in the cost of living.
  
  Luxon waffled about being a “good global citizen”. Well, bugger that when China, India and half the world couldn’t give a damn about it. So we pay–and have no meaningful effect–while they grow and prosper.
  
  You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. National seems to think you can. Glad to see them releasing a sane policy–which it not actually original to them–but it’s a disgrace to commit Kiwis to anti-growth environmental targets while our major trading partner has a good laugh at our expense.

Luxon’s statement on Three Waters actually mirrors a lot of what I’ve said privately.

Set standards for water quality and infrastructure. In the short term at least mandate a minimum spend or %spend on core infrastructure. I wouldn’t limit it to water infrastructure but also roads, for example.

If the individual council is unable to do the job, get in proper engineers to do the job.

This way the council then has to be up front about what else they’re spending money on. They can no longer hide spending on rainbow crossings under “depreciation” which is how many other things were funded.

It will then become apparent when the council asks for a 15% rates rise that actually they could cut things that aren’t strictly necessary.

I see a similar trend with the Kapa Haka thing going on at the moment. “We deserve/need/want more money, because this is important! We know its important because of the million people that come to see it!”

Well if a million people come to see it, charge them $2 and there’s your $2 Million funding. $10 and you have funding for Africa

Any of the fam here think fines for not wearing a seatbelt in a quite residential street are a f**ing joke?

Just had a call from a bestie at tennis. Telling me she was heading home after our game this morning and got flashed by an unmarked cop coming towards her up Portland Rd and ordered to pull over!
She guessed why it was and immediately pulled her belt over then sat there and waited.

The cop (a pom as it turned out) wasn’t having a bar of it. Told her he had her on camera, took all her details and said she would be issued an infringement-notice for $150 🙁

As Prue said, “show me one instance in the last 20 years where its been reported someone has been killed in Remuera because the weren’t wearing a seatbelt?” That’s a very good question.
TBH I never wear mine either…. but both times I’ve been pinged I’ve managed to talk my way out it.

  A different World these days. 60s 70s never worried about seat belts.
  Now it is like a gun (Alaska) – chambering a round when there is trouble coming is a bit like trying to put a seatbelt on when your accident is 7 seconds ahead.
  I was always against it being forced. Wearing a crash helmet on a motorcycle only if going more than 30mph. Yep, that hurt me a bit, but arms mainly.

This is just fear porn now. We’re watching something that may or may not form into a cyclone and if it does we don’t know where it will go……

Meteorologists are closely monitoring a weather system near Fiji which has the potential to turn into another tropical cyclone.

But MetService said it is too early to know whether that would happen, and if New Zealand will be affected.
