So ‘bread and butter’ is Labour’s slogan du jour and heading into the election, as Minister Michael Wood refers to the $8.5billion spent on Kiwirail under his government. And 18 brand new trains coming for Wellington and Wairarapa. Cost? Nothing yet AFAIK. No doubt binding contracts will be signed before the election, just in case.

        FYI, I lived in Aust throughout the initial trial and tribulations that involved One Nation (Pauline Hanson’s Political Party). She was very determined and still is although I have never voted for her Party.
        BTW, I also didn’t support her going to Jail over trumped-up charges. However, that’s Aust Politics for ya.

      Wayne Mapp – thanks again for reminding me that career politicians rarely if ever engage in actual discussion or debate. Your use of an ad hominem slur re Hanson, rather than addressing the message of the actual video is telling.
      
      Fortunately most of us have had our eyes opened to this particular piece of gaslighting and spot it instantly.
      Try discussing the points made in the video. National and ACT would do very well to look at it and understand the message from it which is totally on point.
      There is no “free” energy. It is currently an ideological fantasy to think we can get abundant “clean” energy based on current technology. NZ has abundant clean coal yet we import dirty coal from Indonesia. Vehicle emissions are the lowest they have ever been.
      Batteries and the materials to make them, solar panels and the materials to make them, wind turbines and the materials to make them – are all filthy technologies and the practices used in manufacturing are questionable, particularly as we know regarding lithium/cobalt.

……”A TDB Advisory report that assessed the 2022 wealth of the country’s largest Maori businesses puts Ngai Tahu at the top of the iwi rich list with a value of $2.3 billion. Tainui comes a close second with $2 billion. So, when Tuku Morgan speaks out, it’s on behalf of a multi-billion-dollar business development corporation – one of the richest private business operations in the country.

Third on the rich list is Auckland’s Ngati Whatua, which is worth $1.7 billion, followed by Ngati Toa on $811 million. Tuhoe, the iwi involved in the disastrous co-governance of the former Urewera National Park is worth $441 million. Then there’s Ngati Porou on $280 million, Ruakawa on $228 million, and Ngati Awa, the iwi that’s trying to stop the water bottling company, on $174 million. Ngati Pahauwera is worth $113 million, and the northern iwi Ngapuhi, which hasn’t yet negotiated their treaty settlement, is worth $86 million.

  It is sickening to read socialists spouting their virtuous clap trap. They push the notion that the Government can be some kind of modern Robin Hood when the reality is that Robin Hood was a legendary thief who actually opposed the oppression of the state which was imposing harsh taxes on everyone.
  
  Parker’s grubby report also confirms the weakness of democracy; whoever robs Peter to pay Paul always has the support (vote) of Paul.
  
  There’s one major problem in a wealth tax, which has been revealed in Norway. It’s not that capital is mobile and the super wealthy can find a more benign place in which to be a tax resident. The problem is this: socialists will have spent the money they expected to extract from the people they’ve targeted before it arrives. They then have no option but to increase taxes on the middle classes, who can’t escape so easily.
  
  It’s a con, but too many people fall for it because they don’t think it will affect them, until it’s too late.

    Norway makes its money from drilling up oil around the globe not socialism. A business model that undoubtedly improved after the blowing up of the Russian pipeline. We stopped oil. We are not following the Norwegian model.
    
    Social services is how you spend your money not how you generate it. It’s like saying my wealthy neighbour doesn’t do their own housework or gardening, therefore if I hire a gardener and housekeeper to do my domestic chores I will be happy and better off like my neighbour. When you haven’t considere do what your own income is.

    Norway. High education. High social cohesion. Extracts minerals.

      You’re confused, or simple. What Damian Grant and the Guardian articles show is that transfers in the form of benefits (WFF or accommodation supplements) are actually funded by a tiny proportion of the population. It doesn’t come from the Government, it comes from net taxpayers via the Government. When those people move, as they clearly can, their contributions to WFF or accommodation supplements stop.
      The Government has two options, cease paying WFF or tax who-ever is left to make up the lost tax revenue. Invariably they choose option 2. Even John Key did this even though it’s not sustainable.
      
      Labour has taken it to the next level. For the past four years+ they’ve been spending like drunken sailors. Despite tax revenues as a % of GDP being higher than ever before, they’re still only bringing in 90% of what they’ve been spending. They’ve made up the difference from borrowing. They know they can’t keep doing that and they don’t want to rein in the spending, so they’re pushing the idea of a new tax that somehow won’t actually touch most people. It’s a con.
      Labour has failed in every single policy intervention it has made in the past six years. Why do you think their foray into tax will be any different? They and their rabid Green friends won’t be happy until everyone is equally poor and miserable. Harsher taxes will not make us prosperous.
      
      Only when NZ turns its back on transfers and expecting others to pay for our individual life-choices will we start to see improvement.

        I’m pointing out that the Norway utopia is not as a result of socialism and wealth distribution, it is due to better educated citizens, a more socially cohesive society and drilling for oil. And providing more services and more infrastructure is a luxury of a high income successful country. If you kill the golden goose (eg the wealthy and wealth creating industries) then you can’t afford as many government services whether that’s higher pensions, or better hospitals and medicines.

    Regardless of whether a wealth tax benefits a country, opponents make a mistake in using Norway as an example.
    
    As pointed out on Kiwblog last night, Norwegians are prudent with their money, and the departure of 30 billionaires won’t be noticed in this rich country, whose sovereign fund has a current value of $NZ2.235 trillion.
    
    Low-taxers could hardly have picked a worse country to argue their case.
    
    Scandinavian countries generally have high tax and high-standard welfare, and most Scandinavians seem happy with that.
    
    As a diplomat once pointed out, NZ’s problem is we want both Scandinavian-scale welfare and low taxation. Can’t be done.
    
    We need more debate on tax, and continuing debate, and hats off to the Taxpayers Union for sparking that.
    
    More on Norway. It ranks 13th in the world in GDP per capita, compared with NZ at 42nd.
    
    Norway has 15 per cent more land than NZ, but only 2.7 per cent is agricultural compared with 43 per cent in NZ. Forested areas are fairly similar.
    
    However, Norway is rich in energy potential. Apart from offshore oil and gas, which have fueled its huge national savings, its mountain terrain, unlike NZ’s, provides many valleys suitable for water storage for hydro power.

Just got back from a work trip to Thailand. Anyone that doesn’t think this is Asia’s century is deluding yourself. Post covid:
– Electric vehicle Manufacturing hub confirmed
– 1-2% inflation. Prices have barely moved since last over there in 2019.
– No large cash injections from the government
– Minimum welfare. People genuinely wanting to work and taking pride in their job.
– welcoming back tourism, all facilities fully staffed, no covid restrictions
– A safe country to walk the streets at night
– motorways and roads without potholes.

I truely believe it will be less than 30 years when the likes of Thailand, Malaysia, Phillipines and maybe even Indonesia have a higher standard of living than this country.

In comparison we are in decline.

      Might have changed since you were there cosy. Perhaps limits on certain asset classes but foreign direct investment is encouraged in assets such as apartment blocks and there is significant foreign ownership in Pattaya based off what I saw. Our Thai business partners confirmed this was the case.

This is the main issue facing Shipping companies on a Global scale.
How do you design and then build for the future, Average working age of a Cargo vessel +/- 20 years and no body can agree with massive amounts of R&D going towards it.

How the how can it keep / and or manufacture in NZ ( Apart from Methanol).
The only outcome will be more expensive freight rates “if” it is profitable to come here ( Risk/ reward) etc .
No Shipowner will allow its vessel to come here if “uncertanity” remains about refueling upon arrival.

  Stop it from operating. As some British “think”-tank has suggested.
  But seriously, I’m not sure that it can be done, unless we accept vastly increased fuel costs, whatever option is eventually adopted. Forget biofuels, hydrogen, batteries, return to sail and such likes. Nuclear could be viable for certain types of vessels, but is not going to happen for very well known reasons. There’s some promise in ammonia and/or methanol, but as you say yourself, can we maintain adequate stocks in this country? And it’s going to be very expensive.
  One of the consequences of dispensing with present marine fuels will be lack of base material for asphalt manufacturing, but that’s another story.

  Actually marine is probably the easiest long-haul transport sector to convert to clean fuels. Most marine engines are pretty forgiving of their fuel, and this means they can use partially refined (and therefore lower cost) biofuels as drop in replacements.
  
  These biofuels will come from forest residues, where NZ does OK.

    It is not as simple as that. Maintaining biofuels in optimal condition is quite an exercise as these fuels have a very strict “use-by-date” parameters. Bacterial contamination is very common and very difficult (and expensive) to eliminate. Not only that, such a contamination may result in very expensive machinery breakdowns.
    And last but not least…marine engines ARE NOT very forgiving of their fuels, regardless of whether these fuels are refined of residual. On the contrary, marine fuels, be it MGO or HFO fuel, require continuous treatment onboard ship and any failings in this regard have very serious consequences.

      We are talking about 2nd generation biofuels, and any onboard treatment required for HFO (sludge & water removal, optimum temp etc) are not made any harder by using some bio feedstocks.

David Parker seems to have a very big chip on his shoulder. It may go back to his former life and his association with the Otago mafia – a cabal of low key high rollers who made a heap of money in various activities. Parker enjoyed to the notoriety but wasn’t clever enough to make any money himself. Green eyes and ‘lets get them’ emerged. “If I can’t have it they can’t”.

The envy come through in his misguided, muddled tax thinking. But worse it comes to light in his RMA reforms. Behind these ‘wrecking ball” regulations is the idea that no one gets to do well out of using our resources. It is devastating of what is left of our economy. Parker has to go. And his party.

Our health system is crap and has been in crisis for some time. A prominent Wellingtonian donates all the $$$ to fund a new Children’s hospital and David Parker wants to tax him more.

When the Govt was dead in action at the first part of Covid, some richlisters hired planes and brought in PPE etc. And David Parker wants to tax them more.

Maggy, I wonder what Lindsay thinks of the racist comments made on the blog. Bassett, Brash or Hide are not racist but there are a lot of racists on that blog. It is not just the comments but the likes that such comments get.

        West African sported many advanced cultures in Mali, Ghana and other kingdoms that rose and fell.
        
        When the Portuguese turned up on one part of the West Coast of Africa they encountered the Malian Army which impressed them no end….
        
        That cavalry rode horses imported from the Arab world, wore chain mail and fought superbly.
        
        Mali had a large empire and one of its rulers, Musa Mansa, is rumoured to have destabilised the Islamic worlds economy when he performed his haj He gave away and spent that much on his journey.
        
        (Mali had converted to Islam via the religion being propagated along very old and well established trade routes from the Med to Sub Saharan Africa).
        
        A more plausible reason why Sub Saharan Africa did enjoy the same wide spread advancements in technology and nation building common on the Eurasian landmass and around the shores of the Med are probably better explained in the Guns, Steel and Germs book. By contrast, Europe was building gigantic cathedrals and sailing the globe (that’s how “the Portuguese showed up” after all) and they had many advanced and complex societies. So did Asia, to a lesser extent.
        
        Unless you can show that these so-called advanced African cultures were analogous to what you would have found in Europe or Asia for centuries (and which haven’t fallen, unlike your Africans), then my point stands.

  I wonder in what way you believe that comment is inaccurate though? It seems to me that the genetic factors in different outcomes and behaviour are dismissed simply for ideological reasons, in that, if there are innate differences – which there clearly are – then no amount of redistribution, “equity” programs, and other social and economic measures will make any difference whatsoever. Nobody could plausibly claim that, for example, Black men disproportionately dominate professional sports in the US on account of environmental reasons, yet environment is always posited as the reason for their disproportional dominance of criminality.

      Condemnation isn’t the same as refutation. Tell us your own thoughts here on KB, rather than referring us to BBH. Having read the particular comment, it seems perfectly reasonable to me, because genetics is a very plausible reason for why social and governmental approaches have achieved nothing. And it’s not just Maori in New Zealand – policy attempts to address group differences and “close gaps” have never worked anywhere else either, as far as I can see.

    I know the definition of racism is to define a person primarily by their racial stereotype, but I really feel like the definition should be changed to only taking action based on said stereotype.
    
    What I mean is, there are clear differences between different races. This is abundantly clear when considering your example. The NBA. It is obvious that people of African descent have superior genetics when it comes to basketball ability. I don’t think it is racist to say this, as it is simply stating the obvious reality.
    
    My feeling is that racism is treating people differently based on those stereotypes. For example, making a law that 70% of NBA players must be Caucasian, because 70% of USA is white and that’s not fair for whites who want to play in the NBA. That is racism. Or, for an NZ example, giving a particular race special benefits, discounted prison sentences, dedicated govt positions etc based on racial stereotypes.

      Nobody seems to have a problem with, at least tacitly, accepting the genetic biological differences that manifest in Blacks dominating the NBA or the NFL. But people have been socially conditioned for political reasons to display a kind of mental allergic reaction to the idea of average cognitive differences being the driver of poor relative educational performance and propensity to violent crime. If the latter disparities are to be put down to environment, then the former must to be as well. Cognitive capacity and function is a much a matter of physical characteristics as fast-twitch fibres, height and bone density are. We can’t legitimately attribute “environment” to any poor outcomes, while accepting innate and immutable differences for the positive ones.

Damian Grants article on the IRD Envy report in Stuff today is a great read and lays out the facts of the political nature of this report and it’s drivers. The thing that strikes me is the utter takeover of Government departments by left wing activists that has occurred in the last six years. National are going to have a helluva fight on their hands clearing these political operatives out and returning the public service to the delivery of impartial policy advice.

His questions are not designed to seek Nationals policy objectives, he wants commitments to firm expenditure or savings numbers at a time when it’s not possible for National to give them as they don’t have access to the same resources or data the Government has. He is smug and supercilious, both poor traits for an interviewer. The interviews are clearly not designed to inform the public but designed to belittle his interviewees and curry favour with the government.   Right Jade but little Jack sure has been on the Koolaide and kept pumping the Labour narrative untill Nicola Willis pulled him up by speculating instead of listening to her answer. The other big takeaway was how conversantly and completely familiar with details, figures and facts about the economy she is. Note how young Jack chocked when told the 311 subjects the IRD scrutinised actually paid 30% tax on actual income and not Parkers claimed 8%. Then he tried hard to infer that John Key went back on his word not to increase GST when the majority opinion is it was a change in source of tax with income tax adjusted to offset the increased GST. A consumption tax an again contrary to young Jack’s opinion the wealthy also pay more of that when Joe public enjoys a beer and the rich lister enjoys his/her single malt.

“Co-governance” in Australia?

I have marked one condition (10 below) in bold just out of interest

Pauline Hanson expresses concern over letter

The alleged 11-point plan sent to Senator Hanson recommended First Nations people be granted first choice of all public housing and reverting beaches and national parks to ‘ownership of the Mob that traditionally inhabits the area’.
Non-Indigenous Australians who use those beaches or national parks would subsequently be charged a fee, which would generate revenue for Indigenous owners, according to the alleged document.

Senator Hanson received a letter which listed the below points
Early Action / Opportunities for the Voice

1. Job quotas: Minimum 10% appointments to be First Nations people for Judges, Magistrates, CW SES, ADF oﬃcers, AFP and State Police forces, Corrections departments, Vice Chancellors, and Ambassadors.
2. Universities: No entry tests, and no fees for First Nations people.
3. Old age pensions: Reduced age eligibility for First Nations people ‘Because we die younger’.
4. Public Housing: First Nations people to have first preference for all vacant public housing across all states.
5. Sport & Music: Entry fees reduced by 50% for First Nations people for any events on public land.
6. Beaches & National Parks: All beaches and national parks to be property of the relevant tribe, and non-first nations people to be charged to use the beaches, parks etc… Revenues to go to relevant tribe.
7. Rivers and Streams: to become property of relevant tribe, and fees for water consumption paid to relevant tribe.
8. Mining Royalties: Same as for water.
9. Income tax: For First Nations people to be 50% of normal rate.
10. Liquor Licensing: All new liquor licenses across Australia to be vetted by Voice.
11. Voice Oﬃce: Research / Policy staﬀ to analyse and review all proposed Government policies, legislation and appointments. Same size and pay as DPMC.

  This referendum will be too late to influence tee New Zealand Election in respect to which Party most clearly expresses its “co-governance” policies, but Kiwi Voters should acquaint themselves with the matter – if Australian “example” claims shown above do matter
  Do you want to vote in something similar – by accident.
  Like a Labour policy put on the back burner until after the Election, if it goes their way?

I remember when

The Treaty of Waitangi was signed by the Maori tribes and the Queen, representing the British.
The Treaty states the Queen is negotiating because, “This is by reason of the fact that so many members of her race were living in this land and many more were coming.”
Does this mean that any British person can claim the right to immgrate here without restriction, and if rejected, could appeal the decision under the Treaty.
Have Maori accepted by signing the Treaty that this is the case?

  The Waitangi Tribunal is the only entity set up to hear claims under the Treaty.
  No claim will be heard other than a Maori claim.

I remember when

Second weka caught in region are convervationist’s efforts: North Taranaki Midweek.
DOC is worried that someone is illegally releasing weka after a second bird was discovered near Manaia.
The capture could signal an increased risk of the birds becoming established, posing a significant risk to wildlife on Taranaki Maunga.

Another conundrum for DOC.
Weka are of course native to New Zealand and occured in many areas where they no longer exist.
Also, largely because of DOC’s actions, weka are New Zealands most translocated species.
Once again DOC are acting as God.

  DOC deliberately slaughtered hundreds of weka on Rakitu Island, off the coast of Great Barrier Island. Birds that were relocated their in the 60s and thrived. They decided to turn it into a “seabird colony” because…….who knows.
  Never reported in the mainstream media. 3 locals kayaked to the island and brought some of the dead weka back and dumped them on the DOC doorstep. They were threatened with being charged for being in possession of a native animal.

Here is something that worries me, the people of this Country couldn’t care less if their children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren are left for years paying for years the hand outs this Government have given them.
We have successive Prime Minister’s Jacinda Ardern and Chris Hipkins taking the micky everytime they have held a Press Conference to announce what they will give that particular day and it is easy to read in the present Prime Ministers body language he actually gives a smirk smile straight after he lies.
Let’s have a look at what he is going to leave future Generations if he and his party are re-elected.
We at present a 30 billion dollar trade deficit that has to get better as we are spending more than what we are earning.
We have also borrow over 110 billions of dollars for the Covid-19 Pandemic that was also used as a slush fund for this Labour Government to pay for promises they made.
And now the Government is about to borrow billions more to bribe the population in the upcoming Budget so they can remain in power.
What a record they have created and how many Generations will have to suffer paying it back, because this rotten Government haven’t got a clue and just keep dishing out taxpayer funds to solve the problems they themselves created.

A close Māori friend of my son’s and his mates who lives in Washington DC is over in Wellington for three weeks visiting family.
His American girlfriend says he’s a different bloke over here away from the tension of living over there.
