Labour MP Arena Williams said her Dad pays $50 a month for prescriptions, so 10 items. She implies this was each and every month. What she sort of forgot to say was the $5 per item was for the first 20 prescriptions – after that it is FREE until the reset next Feb.
Why are Labour so dodgy??

    Yes, globalization has been identified by many as a leading cause of the loss of valuable cultural diversity. it would be good in New Zealand, for example if people stopped want to import pointless culture wars from the US.     I am reading – Stranger in the House: Julie Summers.
    My knowledge of Barbara Cartland, very little, has been increased immensely along with a greater appreciation of some of her lesser known wartime achievements.
    Wars were particularly hard on their family, losing her father in World War 1 and both of her brothers, within a day of each other, in World War 2.
    Her publicity about those suffering, as a result of the war, especially women, was influential.

  Very good, though Plunkett saying no minorities in NZ are discriminated against isn’t exactly true. The unvaccinated were and are and those unable to wear a mask often still are.
  Also Sean was quite abusive and dismissive of anyone ringing The Platform, certainly in the early days. Also I believe Rodney Hide left the show for similar reasons?
  Not sure what Sean’s position is these day. Like with the legacy media, I tuned out when I realised he wasn’t going to give people a fair go when the covid conversion came up. Hopefully he’s gotten past that. We need as much independent media as possible.

A question asked yesterday about my assertion that Robertson said the vaccine was safe and effective: this quote is from his press interview in Oct 21

“…Robertson reiterated that Pfizer, the current vaccine on offer, is safe and all New Zealanders should “get on board with it”.

“All around the world millions of people have received it and it is safe. It is the vaccine we have and it’s the vaccine we are asking New Zealanders to use unless there is a medical reason otherwise.

“Robertson said it’s “vitally important” for New Zealand to have the highest vaccine rates as possible to tackle the Delta outbreak, as cases are expected to double in the next fortnight across Auckland.

  I know plenty of people who were refused legitimate medical exemptions for the jab, I don’t know any who were granted one? Another lie from a Labour politician. No surprises here.
  
  But currently in NZ, it isn’t allowed to be talked about. Like it never happened. The willful and malicious refusal to acknowledge the harms done is abhorrent.

‘The commencement of regular output from a much-delayed Finnish nuclear reactor in April saw electricity prices in the country decrease by more than 75 percent.

The Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear plant completed the transition from testing to regular output last month to become Finland’s first new nuclear plant in more than four decades. It is expected to produce up to 15 percent of the country’s power demand.

And while the plant’s production is still in its early days, its launch has had a considerable effect on Finland’s energy prices, lowering the electricity spot price in the country from €245.98 per megawatt-hour (MWh) in December to €60.55 per MWh in April, a reduction of more than 75 percent, according to physical electricity exchange, Nord Pool.’

  So the Finish people are now paying only the equivalent of NZ $0.105 per KwH for electricity after adding one new nuclear power plant.
  
  We are paying NZ $0.46 per KwH during peak time and NZ $0.23 at night when power is at its cheapest plus a fixed daily charge regardless of how much or how little power we use.
  
  Wish we had a few nuclear power plants.

    The average wholesale market price in NZ (which is what the Finnish number is) is about 11c a unit. That includes carbon charges for fuel burnt. The extra cost is all the other things – transmission, distribution and retail charges plus the taxes.
    The fixed daily charges are needed otherwise those that have solar wouldn’t pay anything for energy charges even though they need the grid to function, taking their surplus, and provide imports at night.

        On of the main reasons why they were introduced were all the people who had baches and only used small amounts of power for a couple of months a year. There used to be whole coastal communities like thisThey were costing power companies more money to read the meters than they got in income, so were subsidised by the average household consumers.
        They now pay a lot of capital costs. The spread between daily and consumption varies area to area. My power bill data shows here they have gone from 90c to $2.32 in twenty five years. GST is extra.

    I’m sure if the comparison was permitted to be truthfully carried out, a genuine cost/benefit analysis would very quickly prove that solar and wind are the most expensive forms of power generation. Same for an ICE vs an all electric vehicle.
    
    But as with covid, open and honest conversations aren’t permitted. Everything is about narrative control by the Marxists currently in the process of destroying society.

      Our 5.3Kw home solar system was installed almost exactly 5 years ago and in that time has generated 32 MwH of electricity. Annually that’s worth $1650.00 and results in a return on investment of 12.3% per year.
      
      One of the best investments we’ve ever made.

        Nice. Ours is only 3Kwh but it was considered state of the art when we put it in 12 years ago. Recently had to replace the batteries, went with lithium which meant changing the inverter and charge controller. Set us back 30k but pretty sure it’ll do us another 20 years.
        Security of supply and no power bill is a wonderful feeling.

      Dunno. Decommissing of nukes hasn’t happened a lot – looks like numbers that noone much wants to own up to. A worn out nuke is a large heap of radioactive rubble.
      
      Waste is still a work in progress too. You could look at Sellafield – the UK’s nuclear garbage dump. An awful lot of very nasty high-level long-life stuff waiting for a home. An awful lot of plutonium sitting in tupperware containers in one building. The odd mistaken release of bad stuff into the Irush Sea on a calm night. etc etc

        U.S. commercial reactors have generated about 90,000 metric tons of spent fuel since the 1950s. If all of it were able to be stacked together, it could fit on a single football field at a depth of less than 10 yards.
        
        The nation’s spent nuclear fuel is initially stored in steel-lined concrete pools surrounded by water. It’s later removed from the pools and placed into dry storage casks that are made of steel and concrete or other materials used for protective shielding.

        “An awful lot of very nasty high-level long-life stuff waiting for a home” – sounds like it has a home? It’s just that there’s currently no simple solution to making it safe other than encasing it and waiting.
        The discussion is about “renewable” v the alternatives. I’ve yet to see any report explaining firstly, where ask the materials are coming from to make all the solar panels, wind turbines and batteries.
        Secondly, the tricky little problem of disposal or recycle once they have done their dash. These are the reports and comparisons I haven’t seen that KH invited me to provide.
        I’ve passed that one back to them and looking forward to reading them. Not holding my breath.

With all the government announcements on investment in infrastructure and resilience at the recent budget I wondered what ever happened to the Implementation Unit established in 2021 by Robertson within DPMC to “ensure awareness of whether selected, priority projects are on track to deliver the intended benefits within the intended timeframes – and, if not, to work with the responsible minister and agency to identify what needs to be done to bring the project back on track and follow up to ensure these actions are taken.

The Unit is led by Executive Director Katrina Casey”. Did it happen, has it reported back yet on anything, just asking..

    Inv – it is if you go to club rugby in Hastings.
    
    The crowd was predominantly Maori and very good humoured maybe because their team had a comfortable win over the team we were supporting.
    
    Actually we were at the same venue about 3 weeks ago where the game between the same two teams went to the last 5 minutes before they scraped out a narrow win. The same good humour prevailed then even though their team was behind a couple of times in the match.

  It is not compulsory in the Public Service. However the Public Service Commission encourages the use of pronouns in email signatures. Indeed they have issued extensive advice on the subject. I would estimate that about 80 percent of public servants in New Zealand comply.

    If the Treaty and its relatively recently found principles (from about the 1970s to 80s onward), as interpreted by Labour leads to Willie Jackson’s democracy as we don’t know it, is a revised Treaty, lauding Maori over all others, that democratic.
    
    The hassle is getting such an argument started when the mainstream media are so biased in favour of Labour and through them to the Treaty – and to a version of the Treaty that needs the Supreme Court of the United States to tell us does not cover the right to Abortion and a hell of a lot of other add-ons.
    The Treaty itself is now bit of an abortion which the country needs to address.
    
    Pare it back again to
    Article One – Maori have their taonga, tattoed heads returned from around the world, fisheries and what else they do not want to sell.
    Article Three – We are all individual but equal citizens, with the right to a glass of fresh water without having to adopt Te Ao Maori to get it, even if we have to pay a bloody city council for it.

There is a big push on for home owners/builders to use glass “wool” as insulation.
Glass wool is fibre glass.
Wool is a warm, natural, sustainable, and easily renewable product.
It is a shame that such a great natural fibre has to be compromised by being branded with chemical based products.

It occurs to me that the bulk of political ‘commentators’ and journos out there are (publicly, but mostly privately) tribal Labour and still view the election in terms of just a National v Labour fight – with superficial mention of the third parties.

Will they ever provide any genuine analysis of what a coalition govt of their preferred Labour Party with the necessary support of others might actually look like?

Saw a headline of usa police using AI, thought, hmm, could be a good way to monitor crime, nope, using it to detect problematic behaviour with their officers

Across the US, police officers are equipped with body cameras that on average capture 20 videos a day, or 100 per week. In one Pennsylvania Department, the footage is now being analysed by artificial intelligence.

The Castle Shannon department has started using an AI tool called Truleo. It reviews all the footage, whereas human eyes usually only analyse one percent of it.

The AI scans the footage for five million keywords during interactions with the public, and the goal is to detect problematic officer behaviour so it can be rectified before things get worse.

A recent post on Kiwiblog was headlined: “should of thought ….”
My pedant’s lexicon has noted that a number of similar phrases are creeping into the language, should of and would of are the two that first come to mind. It seems they are derived from should’ve and would’ve – the apostrophe denote missing letters, ie ha, such that the original ‘would have’ and ‘should have’ are shortened to should’ve and would’ve. The ‘ve has become ‘of’. Have any other readers noticed similar shifts?

  These shifts in usage and pronunciation are nothing new and have been recorded for hundreds of years.
  Something will ‘sound’ wrong, if spoken, or ‘look’ wrong, if written, to someone who is merely accustomed to the pronunciation or spelling of a different time or region.
  As with many other social changes, most humans instinctively prefer previous patterns of behavior, especially as they age, and opinions and habits become more fixed.

Talking with a bestie after Mass earlier.

Melinda used to be a full-time Kindy teacher in Remuera, but now does three days a week for a private Daycare-Centre pulling in twice the money.

She reckons one of the biggest factors with kids running amok in todays society, is that the vast majority of them are no longer even taught simple things like ‘Nursery-Rhymes’ at their mother’s knee.
She referenced a survey undertaken by the MoE, which found children, from what might be called less affluent areas, had never even HEARD of “Baa-Baa-Black-Sheep”…..let alone able to recite it.

The best way I can think of to slash emissions is to close parliament and stop all the pollution coming out of there

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins will shortly speak to media after making a major announcement to slash greenhouse gas emissions from one of the country’s largest emitters.

The initiative is expected to involve funding from a Government fund established to support decarbonising industries, set up in 2020 but which received a $650 million boost in last year’s Budget.

  Does that mean Contact will be paying them to shut the furnace down when it’s cold and the wind isn’t blowing?
  Something I have trouble understanding is why these projects always make so much sense, but not unless the govt ‘invests’ in it.

  The deal announced by Hipkins is to subsidise new electric furnaces for NZ Steel. Here we go again, a grinning James Shaw smiling as the poor NZ taxpayer pours corporate welfare into NZ Steel. Yet another futile attempt to save the planet while politicians jet set around the world at our expense. Eventually we will be subjected to endless discussions between NZ Steel and whichever is their lucky electricity company (viz a viz Tiwai Point Rio Tinto) about how the electricity is too expensive and they need to be subsidised. Presumably, the Cook Strait cables and transmission networks will also have to be upgraded to supply the additional load these furnaces will require or maybe Megan Woods is planning a new nuclear power plant to coincide with the new electric furnaces being turned on. When will NZ politicians accept we (in NZ) cannot affect any change to global climate and that the optional $140 million that this planet-saving initiative is splurging on a private company would have been better spent on elective surgery lists at our major hospitals for knees, hips, and hernias.

  The press release is fairly vague.
  This is not about anything to do with making steel. The steel making process is basically just using the C from coal to strip the O2 from Fe2O3 to leave Fe. It is the actual carbon they need from coal, not just the heat from burning it.
  
  This proposal is about using electricity to melt a giant vat of scrap steel into a liquid state for further shaping.
  In theory, the power will be turned off and on according to which windmills are turning at any one time. In practice electricity is fungible. Power diverted to the scrap heap at Glenbrook will be made up by burning coal at Huntly.
  
  Politically this is a good move. It is another poison pill for National if they get elected with all the credit being banked now by Labour.

Reports detail Fire & Emergency’s struggle with ageing truck fleet, posing real danger: NZ Herald 16, Dec, 2021.
Firefighters have been struggling with their big ladder hoses breaking down, posing a danger to them and to being able to put out a fire.
Fire and Emergency has an ageing fleet of large trucks that it has lacked an up-to-date replacement strategy for.
Internal FENZ reports released under OIA show major breakdown 3 times in 2021 and once in 2019 on the country’s 10 largest trucks (called Type 5 and 6 aerials).
The country’s 10 large trucks average 20 years of age: the 3 oldest are back-ups or ‘relief’ engines, but even the 7 active aerials average 15 years of age.

The Government has announced New Zealand’s largest single emissions reduction project, with a deal that will subsidise a new “electric arc” boiler for NZ Steel’s Glenbrook plant.

The three-way deal, between the Government, NZ Steel and Contact Energy to provide flexible and cheaper off-peak power to the steel giant, has been hailed by all three parties.

The new boiler – to which taxpayers are contributing up to $140 million through the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry fund (GIDI), will dwarf the other Government projects.

The total cost is expected to be $300 million.

    When I was last at work early this year and last year, Glenbrook was not making much steel. All of the flats, rounds, and RHS was stopped and we has Australian steel.
    Glenbrook was reduced the plate and sheet steel. Unless something changed it was mostly Australian owned. NZ Steel was just faintly involved.
    Some steel was hard to get so every increasing prices, like 13% a month. Hard to cost a job and make a profit. One thing we would not accept is Chinese steel. Too brittle and not enough new product put in with recycled stuff.
    Any welder worth his salt could tell Chinese steel in the first lay.

      Add to that. Welding Chinse steel to other steel was also an issue. Although brittle, the Chinese steel seemed to have a lower melting point – so welds undercut. That is just not acceptable when I am making a product, I do a WOF test and it goes out on the road.

  The reason being that the carbon price in the ETS is not high enough to make this sort of emission reducing technology worth while. The carbon price would need to be over $200 per tonne compared to the current $60 per tonne.
  It is the same issue with the clean car incentive. In theory you could use the ETS to provide the incentive. At current carbon prices the ETS on petrol is about 20 cents per litre. Not really enough to change consumer behaviour. I reckon the ETS component would need to $1.00 per litre to have that effect. However that would imply a carbon price of about $250 per tonne. That level of carbon price is not really viable, certainly not yet. Way too big a shock to the economy.
  As some here will know, I think National is wrong to oppose the clean car discount. Also their opposition to the incentives to change from coal to electric boilers. If National also opposes this, it is going to be hard for National to say that they are serious about climate change.
  As the above examples show, the ETS does not have a high enough carbon price to incentivise changes in industrial and transportation technologies. It is high enough to incentivise increases in forestry, but National is also opposed to that.

    A “serious” policy would be to choose an emissions reduction target consistent with a gradually ramping New Zealand Unit price over the next 30 years. Calibrate the quantity of New Zealand Units to those targets. Abandon “net zero”. Abolish evert “climate change policy” except for the ETS. Return all ETS revenues to consumers, with corresponding reductions in other taxes. Compensate poor people if society judges that is appropriate.
    
    Abandon charges on New Zealand agricultural emissions until there is any cost effective technologies that would make a material difference.
    
    Set and forget.
    
    Stop talking about climate change policies.

      You have just said you oppose Net zero 2050. In fact you think National should not even talk about climate change. In common with many regular contributors on KB.
      A gradual increase over 30 years in the ETS carbon price (if that is the only policy) has no hope of getting NZ to Net Zero by 2050.
      There will be at least 3 different governments between now and 2050. If a particular government fails to act during their term in office (typically 6 to 9 years) then it loads the issue into the next government.
      Virtually all scientific evidence shows that climate change is already having adverse effects and that we are already paying the price in requiring more investment infrastructure. Most New Zealanders accept this. A major political party like National simply can’t ignore it.
      If they take that approach they will seriously jeapodise their chances of forming the government.
      The political advice here seems to be that National should try and out flank Act on this issue. But these voters are already voting for the Right. Outflanking Act (or having a virtually identical policy) is not a way to win the centre, a significant number of whom are concerned about climate change and think government has to act in this area. They are not just sheeple. They seen enough events already and heard from enough scientists to think government action needs to be taken.

        Nonsense. Attributing weather events to “climate change” of the human-caused variety is not easy.
        In AR5 we’re told that they have medium confidence that we’re having some sort of influence on rainfall in some regions. That’s a far cry from the absolutely massive claim that “virtually all scientific evidence…”
        In fact, in many cases we find that the dire predictions of climate ‘experts’ aren’t matched by observational data. E.g crop yields aren’t collapsing. Cyclone size/frequency isn’t getting worse, snowfall extent is growing, the Himalayan glaciers aren’t disappearing, the dams in Australia did actually fill again.
        You would have been closer to the truth if you had used the word ‘no’ instead of ‘all’.
        Oh, and just because the public might think they see climate change all around them doesn’t mean they’re correct – it just means they watch too much One News. The scientists they need to hear from don’t appear on that show.

  But the announcement didn’t go down well with the National Party, with leader Christopher Luxon saying the Government’s “got it all wrong”.
  
  “I thought that announcement was outrageous, actually, because it just says to me that this is a Government that’s got its priorities all wrong,” he told reporters on Sunday afternoon.
  
  “Just this week, this Budget couldn’t find money to actually help support Kiwis going through a tough cost of living crisis. But all of a sudden they can find $140 million as a subsidy paid for by Kiwi taxpayers and give it to a large foreign, multinational, profitable company.”
  
  Luxon said he was on the side of “Kiwi battlers” who he believed shouldn’t have to use their taxpayer money to subsidise the furnace for a profitable company.
  
  “We really applaud what NZ Steel is doing here. I’ve gone and met with the CEO and the management teams and saw the site myself last year. I really like the direction of where they’re going, but they are quite capable of stomaching and fronting up that $140 million themselves to get that transition away,” he said.

So the Government is going to pay New Zealand Steel $140 million to reduce its emissions, a project which will cost $300 million.

That will reduce emissions by 800,000 tones – a cost of $375 per tone. The price of New Zealand Units on the ETS is $50. If installing a $300 million electric arc furnace was the cheapest way for New Zealand Steel to meet its ETS obligations they would do so. However that clearly is not the case. It only makes sense if the Government hands over $140 million.

The New Zealand Government screams the house down about the EU and Canada subsidising dairy farmers. Yet here we are handing over $140 million to a private company to change a production process for which there is no viable business case.

It will be interesting to see the Treasury advice on this boondoggle.

  Right KO the Aussies will be laughing all the way to the bank. This must almost be in the same class as Cullen’s panic buying of Kiwirail. Ironically some of their old rolling stock could end up in the melting pot as the plant moves to using scrap metal instead of iron sand. This fixation on emissions is gong to be a long term expense for NZ where there really no problem at all thanks to our efficient farming sector.

  The mistake you’ve made is the $140m buys 800,000t per year, so they are much cheaper than $375 per t, in fact they suggest $16.20. At a simple calculation this suggests they are assuming ongoing savings for 23 years.
  
  With the volatility in the price of carbon this is noise. NZ Steel mightn’t have done it this year, but it would have happened.
  
  On the other hand the hydrogen deal that spends $30m over 4 years to get 150,000t or $200 per t CO2 is really dopey. For that kind of money something else must have been cheaper.

We were just taking lunch and watching an interesting program on Aljaz about countries that still impose the ‘Death-Penalty’.

They had some wokester on from Amnesty-International who said the recorded number of Judicial Executions in the last year, had ‘skyrocketed’ to 883, the highest figure in 5 years.
He maintained…. “It’s mainly those from disadvantaged backgrounds that are disproportionately affected by this callous punishment.”

Amnesty are calling for a moratorium on executions, saying they hope this abhorrent punishment will be relegated to the dustbin of history. They will continue to campaign until the death penalty is abolished across the globe.

He was interviewed for nearly 18 minits…yet never ONCE mentioned the victims of the terrible crimes that were committed.
As my partner commented….it’s no wonder this country is in the state it’s in 🙁

  King Henry VIII, a fellow Catholic for a time, was certainly in favour of the death penalty.
  He had Cromwell beheaded for treason, although more likely because he’d arranged his marriage to Anne of Cleves, a complete disaster on both parts.
  At the same time several priests were burnt alive for disagreeing with church doctrine.
  I wonder how many of present day executions are carried out for similar ‘crimes’.
  Who’s to decide who will live and who will die?

    Henry had sent envoys around Europe looking for a new missus. Reports from Cleve about Anne were v good so he sent Hans Holbein the court painter to paint her portrait.
    
    Henry saw it and liked it and after negotiations sent an envoy as his proxy and Henry and Anne were married.
    
    She then went to England and when Henry clapped eyes on her he described her as “a Flemish Mare”.
    
    Hans did a runner!!!
    
    Anne and Henry were divorced, he set her up in a house and with a pension. They actually remained good friends.

It’s interesting reading the sob stories coming out about the Loafers Lodge fire. The focus is on the disadvantaged who lived there, how unfair the absence of sprinklers was etc.

You just know that the MSM are desperately disappointed that it looks like being arson rather than faulty wiring or some such – an inconvenient fact that destroys their narrative.

Also missing from recent stories is that a number of people from the neighbouring hospital lived there – whether as a cheap, local crash pad, or while waiting for family to arrive from overseas – who knows. Again, having decent people living there destroys the unfairness narrative.

From what I can see, the Lodge seems to have been a reasonably priced, basic accommodation service; one that is needed by many. Not big rooms, not fancy, but adequate; all up to date with its fire safety & other regulatory requirements. The alternative for some occupants would have been kipping under a bridge somewhere.

The fact is that there’s a demand for accommodation like this, and we should be grateful that a private citizen provides it. Perhaps the owner should be nominated for a Kings Birthday honour.

  Loafers Lodge fire compliance systems were inspected monthly at least by Independent Qualified Persons as required by the BWOF. While not required to have sprinklers it did have a dry riser system in place for firefighters.

    Presumably the Police will be investigating whether the fire alarm system was tampered with. There was mention of previous false alarms (causing residents to be unresponsive to alarms) and some claim that the alarm system did not go off when there was the fire. A sprinkler system is not immune to tampering by a determined arsonist.

“Compare this to 2020, when no excess deaths were suffered and 160 fewer deaths were actually recorded than expected – which was *at the height* of the Covid pandemic and **prior** to the rollout of the Covid injections.

The Herald story sounds fishy?

Academic comes over from Australia to promote her book and take part in the writers festival in a panel event called Yellow Peril where they talk about racism to Asian people. And lo and behold she arrives in Auckland goes out to a noodle house (that they don’t want to name) and someone walks in and is racist.

She is eating noodles and someone walks into the Chinese restaurant and says “A good Asian is a contradiction in terms’.””

WTF? What a weird thing to say. Was he a customer and just randomly comes in to a Chinese Restaurant and makes an announcement to everyone that he doesn’t like Asian people in a very formal language to the restaurant. Did he then sit down and stay for a meal. It makes no sense.

My husband thinks maybe the person was walking past choosing a restaurant and was talking about food and said “Good asian (food) is a contradiction in terms” At least that would make a little more contextual sense. Although he would be wrong as Asian food is some of the best.

  I’ve read many times about racism aimed at asians so i was a little worried bringing my partner to New Zealand but so far she has only experienced friendly helpful people. I suspect racism is largely in the eye of the beholder. If you are expecting it, you see it.
