Education 2023 : Labour promises to build Hawkes Bay Hospital should it be re- elected on October 14th, saying business case would begin in the Party’s first 100 days.
Hipkins let fly with more of the same allegations that Labour have used for the last six years that they inherited a Health System suffering from years of under investment.
The structure would cost between $700 million and $1.1 billion with Labour saying it will be fully funded in its fiscal plan over the next decade.

It must be easy for Prime Minister Chris Hipkins to make promises like this especially when knowing that he won’t be Prime Minister after October 14th 2023.

    You refer to the hospital that would be complete now and probably better than Labours proposed ‘cut down’ hospital if Labour had accepted the private offer to fund the hospital. Instead they said ‘Hospitals are govts responsibility, we will pay’.
    
    Doesn’t matter, Dunedin will still vote Labour.

        Dunedin can swing right on the party vote. In 2014 Clare Curran won the electorate vote hands down in ‘Dunedin South’, but National won the party vote by about 2,500 votes.
        The electorate vote masks what is happening with the party vote in a lot of seats. People can be loyal to their sitting MP, while shifting their party vote around quite freely.
        It’s the party vote that decides the make up of Parliament.

  In reality, what infrastructure projects have they proposed that have actually happened – Dunedin Hospital? Trams in Auckland? They can propose whatever they want. They can never make it happen.

    Hipkins and co must sit down in their morning meetings with sausage rolls etc and say ok what can we promise, let’s not worry about what it’ll cost or how we do it, it’s all about the feelz. It’s the only explanation as to how so much has been promised in 6 years and so little if anything delivered.

    I know a number that voted JA and were all in, mostly because of her youth and gender. They won’t be doing that again. Dont know many ‘Green’ voters. The only ones I see are the ones in state homes (judging by the signs).

        kowtow, I’ve said this before, but there were an awful lot of very powerful women who bent the knee to Ardern. Because she was a woman, and because she had a baby while continuing to be PM. And they wanted to BE LIKE HER. What they didn’t know was that while they put in 70+ hours a week, Ardern was doing a fraction of that. And a good few have now figured that Ardern wasn’t very bright as well.

        Anyway most are well over that and those that still love JA (I know woman who were devastated when she resigned), dont share the some love for Chippie.

    The only reason the Green Party can be maintaining its current electoral potential is because of their climate change/emergency/earth boiling/farmers bad alarmist policies.
    Because they sure as hell aren’t interested in traditional environmental stuff like saving the birds and planting a few native trees.

  Our last National Government built three hospitals in three terms, Wellington, Christchurch and West Coast (Te Nikau.)
  
  If not for the earthquakes, Dunedin would have had its new hospital right now.
  
  As for runs on the board, National led governments seem to be able to assemble bricks and mortar into worthwhile structures, whereas all that six years of Labour has produced is a glossy brochure about something that they will never get off the ground !

  And why does no media ever ask Hipkins why, when they had a whole year of cancelled surgeries, did they not take the opportunity to bolster the capacity and skills of the health system then?
  
  Instead, all we got was “there is plenty of PPE”, “first in the queue for vaccines”, “lock step with Australia”, and again with a yearly influenza “there is plenty of supply”.

Great idea. But you aren’t capable of it. Dunedin hospital was ready to build 6 years ago amd you haven’t even started it yet.

And it will be fully funded in the fiscal plan. What does that even mean? The fiscal plan that you just keep adding more debt to?

This is the sort of thing that should have been done during the covid madness. Less inflationary, increases health outcomes and leaves something to show for all the borrowing.

And as for the screeching verral:

“We simply cannot risk the coalition of cuts taking us back to a time where front-line services were neglected, workers pay in real terms went backwards and sewage ran down the walls of hospitals.”

Will someone call her out about her continuing to say things like this? If they cut everything, how come all front line service kpis improved? And wasn’t the sewage running down the wall proved to be false?

The same Ayesha verral that falsified a report on the governments contact tracing capability in return for a list seat and thinks the number one reason for poor health outcomes is that health services don’t fully embody the treaty of Waitangi?. An awful human and a terrible health minister.

I’ve taken a KB breather for 6 weeks while Mrs kk and I have travelled to the UK, France, Spain and Oman. I’m looking forward to re-engaging, and my thanks to those who reached out to check if I was ok… the posting silence being rather solid on my part.

We spent 5 of those weeks with our daughter, son-in-law and their utterly adorable 15 month old son. Spending time with this little man had been refreshing because as adults we have survived plenty of life’s curveballs and may have subsequently become a little cynical. The innocence and vitality of a young life had helped restore a bit of perspective.

The week in Oman was fascinating, if a little warm. Muscat was routinely ~40 degrees and >85% humidity. We went inland and stayed in a little village that dates back 900 years, including a spring-fed communal waterway that had been operating for more than 600 years. Some hand crafted artifacts, robustly but warmly negotiated at various Souq’s did find their way back to our home in Wellington.

Right, enough introspection. How long before the most destructive, most utterly incompetent government in New Zealand’s history is ignominiously booted from office?

  On current polling, the Great Charlatan is back in, with all the chaos and uncertainty that entails. A Green/Maori/Labour/NZF government doesn’t bear thinking about. About the only positive is it would almost certainly collapse pretty quickly.

    Yup, it seems that many of the NZF supporters want to have NZF in a National/Act government, but on the sidelines to “keep them honest”. I don’t think they really want him in a position of power.
    
    Thus if National/ACT looks like a done deal, then NZF support goes up. If it looks sketchy then the NZF support goes down.

As a man started to abuse staff and tried to leave a downtown Auckland supermarket without paying, news publisher Todd Scott says he acted on instinct – tackling the thief to the ground.
Scott said he acted on instinct and did not think that what he was doing was wrong.

“I was the only person to restrain the individual on the ground and I did so for about 10 minutes while the store manager was on the phone to the police.”

Scott said the manager went on to tell him that officers could not come to the scene and that he could not make a citizen’s arrest. He was also told that he himself may be arrested.

“I invited the cop to arrest me if I had broken the law. He said I could be done for assault

  National V the police? I doubt it. The Nats have always had a soft spot for giving the police more powers which is particularly dangerous when the police have gone full-on woke.
  
  But that’s what they intend to do.
  
  Look at this situation over the weekend on the Coromandel with gang members intimidating and assaulting the local population for a couple of days. You don’t need more powers to handle that. You have a bloody flying squad on a couple of choppers out of Auckland and you nail the bastards to the wall.
  
  Banning gang patches and making it illegal to assemble wouldn’t do a damn bit of good there or in places like the vast swathe of gang-owned territory stretching from Whakatane across to Gisborne, the entire East Cape.

    This isn’t so much the police. It is rather what the law is. Here the police seem to have exercised the correct level of discretion by giving a warning and explaining the law.
    
    From my limited understanding of the law, citizen’s arrest is only allowed for major crimes punishable with 3+ years.
    Shoplifting does not make the threshold.
    
    Further, one needs to apply minimum force otherwise it becomes assault. Doing a huge rugby tackle etc when it is not needed could be considered unnecessary force.
    
    What National/ACT could do is to clean up this legislation – allowing citizen’s arrest for crimes like shoplifting too.

  The govt/police abrogating their responsibility to uphold the law should be an absolute defense for any citizen who steps in to do what the police wont. The whole basis for our system of govt is that we grant the state a monopoly on violence in return for their upholding the rule of law, and Labour are clearly failing to uphold their end of that arrangement.
  
  Every retail store should have cable ties to make it possible for suspects to be detained easily and safely until police can be bothered to show up – however long it takes. It’s not causing any harm for justice system to allow this, only embarrassing them into action.

    It would be easy to set up a police identification video hot-line for retail staff to allow them to temporarily detain shoplifters until a police identification is made/confirmed using a phone operator connected to their databases.
    
    Enable members of public to assist and give them legal protection from use of reasonable force. Video the suspect, allow video of any goods being recovered from bags as they are searched etc to be collected, details of ID and/or phone collected, perhaps fingerprinting using a basic kit. Streamline prosecution – may not even need police involvement. If they resist identification then cable tie them hands and feet until police come.
    
    Could also give attending police some on the spot punishment options to avoid clogging up courts. Fines, shave heads, cane, phone confiscation, pepper spray.
    
    Would make it much cheaper to police shoplifting and stop the retail crime spree that has been created by lack of effective policing.

October 15, NZ First holds balance of power (quite possible).
Peters announces that, in order to get the best deal for New Zealand, he is obliged to negotiate with both Labour and National, despite statements prior to the election.
After two or three weeks of Prime Time publicity, he announces that he will form a Govt will Labour, with Greens and TPM assuring confidence and supply.
Reasons given: – NZ is in dire straits, he will work with a new Finance Minister to rescue us all. National has been unable to demonstrate their tax cuts are affordable. Act have not been reasonable at the table. Labour have offered several concessions.

    Just doesn’t get the same te media paahti coverage that they give the “climate” protesters.
    
    In Wales too there’s quite a backlash against lower speed zones .
    
    Here in NZ we’re waiting to be saved from ourselves while all the parties outdo themselves agreeing there’s a climate “emergency”.

      Net zero by 2050 with our current technology is impossible. There is not a town or village anywhere in the world that is net zero. Everyone has non renewable energy for the 50% of the time that the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

    There is still an extremely poor understanding in New Zealand of the costs of “net zero”. However over the next 3 to 4 years there will be no hiding it. The UK is just a couple of years ahead of New Zealand.
    
    Few people can comprehend the enormity of the numbers, and governments exploit that. As for journalists, forget it. But if National’s tax numbers “don’t add up” and it is the end of the world.

    This was always going to happen, just a question of when not if. The Californians are still driving head first into the wall of reality. The Germans I think have left it too late as they have switched off all their nuclear power plants and I don’t think they can easily turn them back on.
    
    As an aside, the ‘Global Boilests’ have created an astounding shortage of baseload energy and Uranium is now suddenly “Green”. The price of Uranium is up +50% so far this year. This will keep climbing IMO and offers a great investment opportunity for anyone interested. Best way to position is with Uranium Miners ETF (URNM).

        The diff in rego costs amounts to only 10 tanks of petrol at the current AUS/NZ price differential of $1.20/l. So by the end of February each year the savings have gobbled up the $500 diff in rego price.
        
        The other factors like GST and ETS are making the point I was making. NZ cost structure. It’s on balance more expensive to live here.
        
        Also, the raw price difference is something that feeds not just into operating a private motor vehicle but into the entire transport and production chain making everything in NZ more expensive as a function of that price.

    Will Luxon’s announcement of a boost to international student numbers help the health system and other creaking infrastructure?

So a lot of commentators are saying it’s a lacklustre election, the two main parties are more or less on the same page, though only one party is being pushed to supply the spreadsheets. What to do, what to do.

But also there’s an angry undercurrent about the state and direction of our country. Plus heading into austerity doesn’t help now so many rely on free money, hammocks and featherbed jobs.

What is hardly being said publicly, though for sure is being said privately, is why we are angry. And who was in charge over six years of shambles? Bearing in mind the original meaning of that word.

Cancel culture now runs amok in our so called institutions of high learning which are meant to be the bastions of free debate but are no longer.

A change in colour of the government with exactly the same policies isn’t change, it’s a continuation of a decline into a 3rd world banana republic. Maybe that’s what should just happen.         Actually I’d say she is a socialist and a fascist. Those terms are not mutually exclusive. Obvious example being the German socialist workers party of the 1930’s. In fact, I’m happy to say that fascism is a requirement of socialism. I really wish people would stop trying to seperate the two as if they were opposites. Socialism requires the removal of individual freedom, human rights etc. That can only be achieved via force and violence.   If everybody I meet is an arsehole – I need to consider the possibility that it’s actually me that’s the problem here.
  
  Similarly, if one or a few politicians are dishonest, well OK, some people are dishonest. But if all politicians are dishonest, we need to consider the possibility that there’s a separate outside factor at work here.
  
  And it’s obvious. Voters reward politicians who lie, and they punish those who tell the truth. First proposition, witness the quite incredible fact that there are still people, even around here, who intend to vote for Winston Peters. Second, well I cannot actually think of an example of an honest politician who was successful in getting and staying elected, but if there are examples that would be really helpful for debating purpose.
  
  What should be helping here is the media, but the fact is they suffer from the same problem – readership rewards journalism that tells readers what they want to believe, and it punishes journalism that doesn’t. So the general public isn’t getting honest and truthful information on which to base informed choices. That is because the general public doesn’t want it.

I wonder if Nathan Bourke, a Taranaki lawyer, went and had a long, long and scrubbing shower with a wire brush after his performance in the High Court at Wellington yesterday.
He and another lawyer, Paul Keegan, were appearing for thugs who beat up a man at a McDonald’s in Hawera because he wore a red jersey.
Three cowardly thugs – all men’s men manly men who assert their jailings were too long.
I know lawyers have a job to do. They are hired guns after all.
And if you talk to any of them – and I have – they’ll all tell you everybody – even the worst of us – has a right to a fair trial and has a right to put a defence before a court.
Fine. I get that.
But Mr Bourke’s excuse-making, his minimising of what happened to that man by a gang of thugs – I refuse to call them ‘men’ even though the eldest of them was 54 – is surely a new level of gross.
It was only a minute. It wasn’t much. The victim wasn’t hurt all that much.
I’ve been kicked and punched for about a minute by four schoolboys. I was 14. Sixty years later it is imprinted on my memory.
So is their twisting and turning before the college principal and their trying to get out of it.
I can still hear them howling as the cane cut their arses to pieces.
Back to my first sentence: did Nathan Bourke and Paul Keegan go and have a long scrubbing shower with a wire brush and the strongest disinfectant to get the shit and stench off them after their performance in the Hight Court at Wellington yesterday before Justice McQueen?

  Putting my Devil’s Advocate hat on, I agree that everyone DOES deserve a good defence – but just not from me.
  
  I regard criminal defence lawyers somewhat like my septic tank cleaner: an unenviable job, but someone has to to it. And they do, because the Crown doesn’t always get it right.
  
  At least half a dozen supposed murderers and rapists have been exonerated in NZ in the last 25 years or so – and that is six too many. Compare those stats with the UK: Of the 400 or so murderers hanged there in the 20th Century ONE is known to have been the hanging of an innocent man – Timothy Evans – for murders committed by another, and ONE is arguably wrongful, that of Derek Bentley. Anyone who cares to can Google them for the details.

    Do you think that conflicts of interest happen in our legal system, and if so would it be for the same reason ?
    
    It seems that,realistically, judge, defence, and prosecution can sometimes, in cases where guilt is indisputable , be of like mind and still have to perform their functions. Good.
    However, there must be cases where familiarity could lead to shortcuts in the process.
    I’m not being accusatory, I would merely like an opinion.

  Seems like typical labour governance. Come up with an idea over breakfast, don’t think about any repercussions, do any research or talk to anyone who might disagree. Announce the policy and walk away. Never thing about it again, check progress or evaluate outcomes.
  Sometimes the officials want to (and can) implement the policy and it happens. Mostly it can’t be implemented or isn’t to officials tastes so the officials slow walk it to death. Sometimes the officials just cant be bothered and since nobody is monitoring the implementation it doesn’t matter.
  
  This is why there is such a large gap between announced policy and implemented policy. Laziness.

So, If the Labour Vote collapses and people stay home, we could see Labour go down to 22%

If the other numbers from the poll stay the same, and Te Pati Maori holds a seat, this gives the Nats and ACT 64 seats and a clear majority.

But Winston gets 7 MPs in Parliament. So how do we deal with this outcome. We could ignore him, but Winstaon has a habit of being hard to ignore.

My suggestion to Luxon would be to offer him the Speakers chair. It gives him the profile he craves, keeps him out of the policy debate, and he might actually be quite good at the job! Any Thoughts??

  As for Shaw not knowing his own academic record, what utter horseshit. I know damn well that I only have a 2:1 Hons degree and not a first. (missed out on a first by ONE “A” Shoulda studied harder). And I sure as hell know I don’t have a Masters.

    1955 Mk. I Zephyr Convertible – the chicks loved it. 🙂
    1958 Mk II – 2.8 ltr. straight 6 – good power.
    Had 2 Mk. IV’s. 1966 2.6 l. sedan – not that flash power wise & overheated if working too hard, but a big roomy sedan.
    1970 Mk.IV 3 ltr. Plenty of grunt & a comfortable roomy car.
    Yes Colville, did the ton up no problem – it could do the ton in 3rd. gear. Independent suspension, bucket front seats with centre seat over the console in front – great car – loved it.

  Master: Whenever I am down in NZ, particularly driving on the Northern Motorway north of the Harbour Bridge, I look at the cars surrounding me on all sides and quietly chuckle at the ridiculous notion that in 10 or 20 years time all those cars – and heavy trucks – will all be electric.
  
  Not a snowball’s chance in hell – and if it did happen, where would we get the electricity to charge them all? The Greenies won’t allow any more hydro, and they have an attack of the vapours if nuclear is even suggested as a viable alternative.
  
  I used to love winding the Greens up during my time by loudly noting by way of interjection that the European Greens have accepted the reality that nuclear is the best option years ago.

    Nuclear is not seen as an option by our major power companies because it is costly:
    
    In December, consulting giant EY estimated the cost of producing electricity from SMRs at about US$120 (NZ$181) per megawatt-hour.
    
    That is based on their “levelised” costs which count their construction costs and running costs over their lifetime.
    
    It estimated that was about three-quarters of the price of generating power from a conventional nuclear reactor.
    
    But it noted that was still more expensive than generating power from coal, and far more costly than the average levelised global cost of renewables such as solar power, wind power and hydro.
    
    The power generated by the wind rises exponentially, as a factor of the cube of the wind speed, which helps explain why wind has long stood on its own two feet commercially in New Zealand without requiring any subsidies.
    
    In contrast, it is nuclear energy that might need help to compete.
    
    British consultant Wood Mackenzie believes the cost of generating power from SMRs may fall to US$80/MWh in the 2030s, as a result of “government support”.
    
    Even at that price, power from SMRs would still be far more expensive than the current levelised cost of wind, solar and hydro power in New Zealand and more expensive than both geothermal power and fossil-fuelled generation, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

      Exactly. Nuclear is an outdated technology. The numbers don’t add up and will only get worse over time. You essentially never break even, as staff, maintenance, uranium fuel costs constantly increase over time. The investment is vulnerable to inflation.
      
      It’s kind of the exact opposite of solar, where your investment becomes more and more valuable over time as inflation increases.
      
      Let’s say you invest $1000 in both nuclear and solar as a thought experiment. At the beginning, they might seem similar in their profitability. But now think about 10yrs in the future. The costs to run the solar has not increased. A 50% increase in zero costs is…well, zero increase. However the cost to run the nuclear has increased massively. Staffing costs will be up 50%, cost of uranium up 50% etc etc

The best way to deal with Winston is to give him a cabinet seat and then a cushy job travelling overseas where he can enjoy the good life and posture all he wants.
No problem giving one or two of his MPs a minor ministerial job or two. Look how little Marama Davidson has done. In fact look how little most of the Labour cabinet has done!
There are lots of ways National can secure NZ First votes and build their self-importance while minimising their influence.
Luxon is sensible not ruling them out. He’s clever enough to keep them in the tent and stop any ructions.
I’d be more worried about David Seymour who wants the limelight and the trophies.

Camara is described in the Wall Street Journal as a a Harvard Law School prodigy turned technology entrepreneur.

Camara last week resigned from the law-software firm CS Disco, walking away from stock options that made him one of America’s highest paid chief executives when the options were valued at nearly $US100 million last year.

His departure came when the company’s board began investigating allegations that he groped a young female employee.

Camara co-founded CS Disco at the age of 29 in 2013 to develop software to sort lawyers’ documents.

Early this month, Camara after a company “happy hour,” invited a small group of employees to dinner at a restaurant.

The Wall Street Journal says Camara pushed roasted meat into the face of one young employee, telling her to eat it “like an animal, ” groped the woman, and tried to coax her to his apartment.

What of his first name, Kiwi?

Camara migrated to the United States from the Phillippines as the infant child of two Filipino medical doctors. His full name is Kiwi Alejandro Danao Camara. The origin of “Kiwi” remains to be explained.

As a student, Camara was a prodigy. He skipped secondary school, graduated a B.Sc. in Hawaii at the age of 16, and then at 19 graduated from the Harvard Law School – its youngest graduate.

      Within 5-10 years AI+robots will get smart enough to mostly automate rooftop and grid solar installs, at which point it will become the cheapest power option for many if not most households and new grid scale generation, with some battery for overnight. Batteries will also drop in price massively as sodium ion batteries greatly undercut lithium.
      
      There’s no need to push for renewables, economics will drive the change.

I was saddened to read about the wonderful Cypriot family selling up the Green Parrot. They were the greatest cooks of kidneys that I have found anywhere in N.Z. Only a great chef can make offal taste good.
The old man there told my wife;
“New Zealand has the greatest food in the world, but most of our chefs are too lazy to learn how to cook it properly.”

  Tauhei: I’m surprised we can still get kidneys! Lamb tongues disappeared long ago – all sold overseas I am told, to the Arabs I think – Ox tongues disappeared a couple of years ago, and I haven’t seen tripe in a very long time either.
  
  Hard to believe there was once, reputedly, a tripe and onions club in Auckland for guys whose wives refused to cook it for them. Offal meats were a big part of my upbringing; modern kids wouldn’t know a slice of lamb’s fry or some tripe and onions if they fell over them.

        Heart, sheep and beef, is great thinly sliced and bbq’d on sticks.
        
        I’ve done offal on the bbq for years alongside a few dipping sauces. People turn up their noses initially but then try it and then there’s no holding them back. My kids were exactly like this.
        
        It’s still a cheap feed, offal, if you can get your hands on it. Liver, hearts, tongue all good bbq’d. Must admit to steering clear of kidneys, brains and mountain oysters. Not my cup of tea.

  I loved fried sheep’s brains as a kid, and my step-ma made an acceptable meal of sweetbreads (thymus & pancreas).
  
  Tripe and onions in a white sauce was the only meal that I and my brothers did not have to eat. It was well-liked by my parents.
  
  I grew up in a family where I was expected to eat some of everything that was put on my plate.
  
  It came as quite shock to me to discover that hubby won’t eat: bacon, corned beef, Scotch fillet, liver (but will eat pate), kidneys, lamb chops, black pudding, chicken feet, salmon, tuna, etc, etc.

Well, I’m sorry, but after six years of promises not kept, heroic forecasts subsequently proven wrong, hopes dashed, mountains of ‘unintended consequences’ and well over half of New Zealanders believing we’re headed in the wrong direction as a country – my phone is off the hook.

And even if it were true, that the economy is showing some resilience, well the credit for that goes to the millions of New Zealanders and hundreds of thousands of business owners who have delivered it in spite of all the barriers put up by the New Zealand Labour Party.

  GDP = Consumption + Investment + Government Spending + Net Exports. But Government spending of money they borrow (running at about 2-3% of GDP) is counted in GDP. So shitty finance ministers that borrow more (none worse in NZ history than Grant Robertson) get rewarded with increased GDP. A finance minister who doesn’t care about running up debt will never have a recession.

“The Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta’s presence in New York today at the United Nations General Assembly is a contempt of New Zealand’s “caretaker government” convention.

Despite the long-standing caretaker convention, Minister Mahuta is today at the UN to sign a highly contentious “Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement”, delivering a national statement on behalf of New Zealand at the UN, and then undertaking bilateral meetings with world leaders and counterparts.

Parliament has risen and New Zealand is less than two weeks from when early voting begins on October 2nd. The caretaker convention has always been that these matters the Foreign Minister is engaged in, should be left to the next government to deal with.

Minister Mahuta claims to be doing this on behalf of “Aotearoa New Zealand”, which to begin with is not our country’s name. What she omitted to explain was why she is signing this agreement now, this close to an election, when this agreement is open for signature in New York for the next two years.

There has been no public announcement or discussion of the Minister’s intention to sign the agreement. In short, the Minister is signaling before the next government is even elected, an intention to ratify.

Labour is putting globalists in charge of the high seas, and from here the NGOs will take over the secretariat and expand the remit of this document, to ensure that all activity on the high seas will require UN approval – such as shipping, fishing, and deep-sea mining.

Labour has no mandate to push forward with this covert agenda, with just weeks out from the election.”

Immigrants – not all bad news.
About 30 years ago we had a guy come and work in the factory. English was limited, but I worked out by hand signs he was an excavator driver in Laos. He swam that miles of river to get to Thailand.
Anyway just a digger driver, but also a dam good machinery tool setter. We had an old lathe (Qualis?) that was stuffed. I got the parts he wanted (shims, hex head bolts, grub screws whatever.) Well man did he do a good job. I wanted that lathe but had nowhere to put it.
Anyway Ni (we called him ‘knee’ because he was knee high to a duck’s arse) got in some trouble buying a car. Overcharged, cash only deal. I won’t say how I exactly I fixed it buy Knee got a refund and kept the car.
He moved on and somehow brought his family here. Nice guy, the sort of immigrant NZ needs. By now he may even have a business doing excavation.

Victoria University is to discontinue 6 courses, including Greek, Latin and Italian.
The other 3 to be dropped are:
Geophysics (closed to new enrolments for the undergraduate majors in 2024)
Geographic Information Systems (closed to new postgraduate enrolments in 2024)
Physical Geography (closed to new undergrad and postgraduate enrolments in 2024)
Given New Zealand’s particular location on the planet and its concomitant natural issues I am very surprised that these 3 are considered expendable.
Maybe when the Big One hits and Victoria Uni is reduced to rubble they will think about reinstating them.

  I am all for dropping Greek, Latin and Italian.
  If you want to learn about such cultures then it is far better to go on an OE to Europe for 6 months.
  You will learn more.
  You will save time (6 months vs 3 years).
  You will save yourself money (3 years of university fees vs 6 months of backpacking)
  You will save us even more money (twice what you’re saving)

    The Greek to be dropped is Ancient Greek. You won’t learn much about that and Latin from an OE trip.
    
    Should be at least maybe one university in the country where you can study these ancient languages.
    
    I would hack into Victoria’s courses like film, creative writing, migration studies, gender and sexuality studies.
    
    They reflect the foundations of Western culture, and are important in study of the English language as well as of Latin-based languages like: Spanish (more than half a billion speakers and the world’s fourth most spoken tongue); French; and Portuguese (world’s eighth most spoken tongue with about quarter of a billion speakers).

I was catching up on my voyeurism of the world that Lorde lives in and I saw this gem:

I don’t know what is more crazy about this picture:
* That a Maori NGO names their organisation The Kindness Institute as a way to milk wallets.
* That the Kindest Government Ever cut funding to an NGO that calls itself The Kindness Institute.

The fact that a Maori NGO had their funding was cut by Labour – who bend over to fund Maori NGOs – suggests to me that their performance could not have been that good.

Anybody else overseas and using a VPN been finding Kiwiblog incredibly slow today? I’ve had numerous timeouts trying to log in. Prior to today I haven’t had this problem. Other websites seem to be fine.

Anything changed behind the curtain?

A dreadful minor party debate with Marama Davidson arrogantly interrupting everyone and carrying on like a know-it-all, while Debbie Packer wants to strip away the wealth from anyone that has any and give it to those that don’t. Winston kept belittling Seymour and Seymour chipped back at him, while Davidson and Packer grinned like (evil) cheshire cats.

Then it was on to the dire panel, with horrible Lefty’s Jenna Lynch and Simon Wilson rubbishing Seymour and saying him and Winston can’t work together so there can’t be a Right wing government (on current poll numbers they wouldn’t need to – NZ First isn’t needed), while Davidson and Packer can work together (to implement a wealth tax). On Davidson and Packer working together, Wilson says “that’s what we all want”. Speak for yourself you greasy haired, furtive looking weirdo.

If they get the chance, Packer and Davidson will work together to put Hipkins over a barrell and implement a wealth tax, that was the big takeaway from the debate. My big takeaway from the after-debate panel was that the conclusions reached were illogical and disingenuous, and that I loathe Simon Wilson.
