  I worked in Auckland Mens’ Prison as a Tutor years ago.
  There was one Wing in which I’d estimate 70+% of the inmates really should have been in other supervised settings due to mental health/incapacity.

    To be fair, there was a lot less violent crime when institutions like lake Alice and the Kimberly centre were operating.
    
    I’m not saying that bad things didn’t happen there, they did but they did perform the most important thing, keeping psychos out of civilized society.

    The Mental Health problems start when the patient/client stops taking their medication and self medicate with pot and meth.
    Unfortunately my son is one of them. Every time he derails it is the same thing. He has a Mental problem but is not violent – just loses touch with reality, so goes to a Mental Facility.

        It wasn’t, but it is ok now. He is 49 and has nothing to his name. I was chasing him around the Shore when he was 14. I don’t bother helping him much now. He knows his situation is entirely his fault. He says I can afford to give him money, how did I get to having a few bucks? You know. Never held a job for more than 3 weeks. Get paid, straight to the booze and dope.
        He lost an eye in a fight (over drugs) Now I’m not sure how much he got from ACC, but it is all gone. He got a few thousand from a bequeathment, all gone.

    I worked in Rimutaka 13 years ago mostly under Clark’s regime. The trick then was to put people on the At Risk unit and expect at risk officers to look after inmates who were obviously mentally ill. The mental health bods would come in and review each inmate and tell us that they couldn’t be moved to a secure mental facility because they didn’t have a recognised mental illness that it was all behavioural. As the inmate neared release date they would rush in and certify them and remove them to a secure mental health facility. They knew all the time that the guys were too dangerous to be let out and they knew there weren’t any beds available so they left them with us untrained in the needs of these unfortunate creatures until the last minute and then snatched the hope of freedom and going home from them and locked them up elsewhere for an open ended period after they had served their sentences. Had they had treatment earlier they may well of been able to go home after the completion of their sentences. We constantly protested about this to no avail apart from thinly veiled threats of rotation and transfer. So much for caring Labour.

    So what happens when someone decides on different criteria and then you don’t meet the criteria? I understand your frustration – really I do, but as soon as you justify some minimum requirements to vote, you end up with voting rights being weaponised. For every single person saying IQ and political knowledge test, the other side give you appointed Maori. Neither is a good idea. One person, one vote – keep it simple.

      Except…. In the country of the blind, the one-eyed person is king.
      
      In practice there are voters with one or both eyes and many of them can turn a situation to their considerable advantage. Some of us did well under Labour, not necessarily by retaining presence or assets in the country.

        1. mindless voting (my not stupid neighnour told me he voted for jacinda because the nats didn’t manage christchurch well, when i asked him why he thought jacinda would manage christchurch better, he didn’t poffer a reply)
        
        2. hidden agendas emerging after the election
        
        3. Ideologically driven reversal of successful policies (3 strikes, charter schools, preprepared pandemic plan, etc)
        
        4. and corruption (the enrichment of the Maori Kings family with future Koha to labour Ministers. The billions inexplicably paid to consultants, labour Ministers families receiving lucrative government contracts, etc.)
        
        Citizens referenda are a MUST to ensure NZs democracy is not abused again by politicians promising nirvana at election time, then pulling their HIDDEN self enrichment schemes out as soon as the election is won.

        Direct democracy produces far worse government. Eg the state of California, because everything becomes dominated by low information voters who will always say yes to the good sounding phrasing of the referendum on the ballot, without thought to the less obvious consequences or costs.
        
        Representative democracy and republics are far better because at least the politicians making decisions have (in almost all cases) a triple digit IQ.

        Sure, some people with nominally high IQ are actually pretty irrational, but making 18 years of age the only criterion hoovers up every braindead moron and low-information halfwit into the voting pool.
        
        Because our system depends on manipulation of the masses by appealing to the lowest common denominator and playing on our basest instincts, of course the powers that be prefer the electorate to be as dumb as possible. If smart people made the decisions, they’d probably start by usurping the powers that be.

    On the assumption that in a genuine democracy, the people are sovereign and govern via representatives who enact the majority will, then everyone has a duty to be knowledgeable, informed, discerning and engaged. If they are idiots who don’t know and don’t care, then, by the definition of democracy, they have abdicated their right to vote by breaching their duty.
    
    It is completely arbitrary to allow anyone over 18 to vote, because age has nothing to do with the definition of democracy, whereas an ability to govern has everything to do with it.
    
    Of course, what we laughably call “democracy” bears no resemblance at all to what I have described, and under our so-called democracy. In fact, allowing the ignorant and the irresponsible and the easily manipulated to “decide” is a fundamental principle. If only the rational, discerning and the dispassionate got a vote, every so-called democracy would be drastically different.

      Which is why I have no problem with 16yos voting providing they can prove they have the capacity and capability by passing an IQ test and a political knowledge test.
      Remember there is no right to drive a car or pilot an aircraft for very good reasons. I say dumb uninformed voting is a danger to society.

        It’s no coincidence that as the franchise has expanded and the reach of mass media has increased and become ubiquitous, once coherent societies have degenerated. Manipulating the idiots, the emotional and the short-sighted via the 24/7 media that drives the agendas of the unaccountable elite is the operative principle in modern “democracies.” In general, people’s opinions are adopted whole, not reached through a rational process.         It’s more accurate to say we have ‘government by stealth’.
        
        Policy is formulated secretly, away from public view, with no input from ‘the grassroots of society’ but instead driven by partisan activists e.g. (1) “3 Waters co-governance” — who called for that? Nothing “open and transparent” that I could see.
        (2) Net Zero, pushed by the UN and WEF (and the EU: didn’t our recent Trade Agreement require us to pay huge fines if we don’t meet our prescribed ‘targets’? That sounds like blackmail to me: “If you don’t follow our Climate Alarmism religion, we will hurt you!”).
        (3) The trans folly. There’s no evidence biological women were consulted about giving up their hitherto exclusive spaces and events.
        
        The left used to rail against “The Establishment” — now they are The Establishment. Democracy is no longer useful to them. The public aren’t supposed to have input into decision making, their task is to follow what the elites dictate from above. If members of the public assemble to discuss radical new policies*, the police will let them be hounded from a public space.
        
        * e.g. Co-governance and “let women speak” events. . . As we witnessed, nil protection from police (must have been orders from Coster). . . In future, bring a helmet.

      I have no deep attachment to democracy. Ideally, a party that shares all of my own values would get in and never leave. I can’t imagine why, having determined the right from the wrong, the good from the bad, and the way a society should best be governed, you’d ever want to let anyone who disagrees govern.
      
      Think of it like this: any elite sports team would prefer, if possible, to crush the opposition in every game and be undefeated in perpetuity – imagine if they had an attitude where they were indifferent to winning and thought it was a good idea to give someone else a chance. It wouldn’t happen.

    A test, maybe? Who sets the test? The same people who came up with the NZ history curriculum?

  Hmm, not really an issue of just the last six years. I worked in mental health 50 years ago. It was the same back then. My knowledge of the criminal justice system is that this is an issue that has never really been solved.
  Maybe it can never be, in part because the definition of borderline itself keeps changing. Also the drive of the last 50 years of much more mental health treatment in the community means fewer beds generally.
  Fifty years ago there was a network of mental health hospitals, built in the early part of the twentieth century that had 7,000 beds. Virtually all gone now. And a good thing too. Back in the early twentieth century there was a mental health bed for nearly 1% of the population. What did that say about attitudes to mental health back then?

    Wayne: I completely disagree that it is “a good thing too” that all mental hospitals were closed.
    
    A friend of mine was one of those tasked with “selling” the new policy of community care back in the late 80’s. As you must know, said community care has never been adequate, which has resulted not only in great distress for many sufferers of mental health illness, but many deaths at the hands of schizos who should have been in secure facilities.
    
    Again as you clearly know, such people only remain well when they take their meds, and with the great holes in community care, ensuring that all such persons keep to their treatment regime is impossible.
    
    Finally, your claim that it is somehow dreadful that there were once mental health beds for 1% of the population, I say “so what?”. Before some of the major diseases – such as TB – were conquered, there would have been X% of beds for those diseases too.
    
    And as you know, I speak with some authority, having been a “consumer” of mental health services for almost 50 years. I remain dependent on pills to keep me well – but because I am not a schizo, I don’t need someone to ensure I keep taking them.

        Actually you need to go read again. The Helen Clark foundation is not involved in that donation. Helen Clark is and she is not matching donations, she is part of a group of people who are matching donations, she is personally not matching it 1/1, the group she belongs to is.
        
        A donation drive backed dollar-for-dollar by former Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark and a small group of donors has earned her former party $400,000 in a week.
        
        And in just over 24 hours since Clark announced she was part of the group of “fund-matchers”, the party raised nearly $270,000.
        
        It is currently unclear how much Clark, who was Prime Minister from 1999 until 2008, will be contributing but if it is above $20,000 – as with any others – it will be required to be reported publicly by the party within 10 working days.

    Wayne: My mother was frequently in and out of mental hospitals. She spent perhaps a third to a half of her adult life in them.
    This is the best place for people like her. Regular hospitals are not the right place. Nor is prison (she didn’t commit any crimes).
    
    Shutting down mental hospitals and ejecting the patients onto the street is absurd as shutting down maternity hospitals and telling women to have their babies in the street.

      I agree that we have to have mental hospital beds. My comment was really directed towards the Oakley, Kingseat type institutions, both of which I worked in, including the criminal section at Oakley. They were pretty bleak institutions. The film “One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest” was all to close to the reality that I experienced as junior staff.
      I know that is in the past and modern facilities are far superior, though maybe not enough of them.

    Over last few millenia only about 40% of males and 80% of females got to have kids, so evolution sees benefit in throwing the dice on brains to produce the occasional Genghis with 10’s of millions of descendents. It’s not at all surprising that a substantial fraction of (particularly) men have brains that are only marginally capable of survival in society. 3% have IQ <70 (= -2σ form 100IQ mean, a higher proportion of them men due to increased variability), which means basically unable to hold a job.
    
    1% needing to be institutionalised or permanently cared for is just a sad natural consequence of evolutionary biological processes.

Catastrophic climate change. Here is a simple test. The warmists’ claims rely on “feedbacks” to push predicted temperatures much higher than CO2 can do on its own. They say higher temperatures adds moisture to the atmosphere making it even hotter.

However, there has been no additional moisture added in the last 50 years. Various studies show no change. Maybe the “feedback” theory is wrong????

why?

Well, the lawyer for OT came out with the usual platitudes about working with the whanau while abiding with the principles of the treaty.

Do these idoits think that the treaty actually excuses this behavior?

Fortunatly, the judge, Judge Callinicos, was having none of this BS. He granted the application for the custody order, with a requirement that the teen was not placed with whānau unless by order of the court, and required the teen’s care plan to be reviewed within six months.

  Judge Callinicos, was the guy who over ruled the system which wanted a child removed from a great foster home – for the sole reason the foter parents were the ‘wrong’ ethnicity.

    They had to give up the child to the care(?) of OT.

    If people have been paying attention for the past 3 years it will. However, a good number still just don’t get it and cannot compute that we’ve been cynically lied to and manipulated by ambitious yes-men and women who are beholden to psychopaths with an anti-human agenda.
    
    To borrow an idea, “what if they held a pandemic and nobody showed up?”
    
    Sooner or later they will try it again, and the question is, do you just talk big on blogs and social media or are you willing to act with honour and integrity and refuse to submit to what you know are lies and manipulation, even at the risk of a great cost or an actual great cost.         That’s the most pernicious aspect: they know that the policies go against the general will (“democracy,” by the way), but they also know that most are so invested in the system and so afraid to go against what they are made to believe is the general will (that’s where media control, censorship and dehumanising dissenters comes in) that they will cave in and go along to get along. All it takes is for 25% (or more) to flatly refuse, and it’s game over. The whole thing depends on compliance. Better to reject it now while it’s possible, than to wait for later when it’s not. Thomas Cranmer.

Turns out he didn’t out himself deliberately, but released an article in English media in april under his real name and then released it here as Cranmer.

Business desk picked it up and then it sounds like they bullied him into coming clean and then released an article which was supposed to contain analysis and counter points to his position on 3 waters etc. Nope, they just attacked him and said he was wrong with no evidence to show why.

This of course sums up what is wrong with “journalists” in this country. No appetite to get details on anything, just spew out what he government tells them.

Cranmer/Crump was a beacon of light in exposing corruption, nepotism and poor practice.

Hopefully he continues, our media would learn a lot from him. Instead they will probably be frantically searching for a way to get him cancelled before he shows them up any further. I hope he has paid all his parking tickets.

  “The Family Court hearing, before Judge Peter Callinicos on Wednesday, was a formal proof hearing that was required as the teen’s parents hadn’t provided statements.
  Lawyer for Oranga Tamariki, Stormie Waapu, said the organisation had not consented to custody orders earlier because “it was a very evolving, changing situation for [the teen]”.”
  I cannot think the Judge will be very sympathetic to OT, especially if they claim principles of the Treaty or the cultural report.

    I think it is more that the way this youth has been brought up, treated and used is becoming the norm for OT, rather than an unacceptable occasional blip.
    When you see hundreds and hundreds of kids living this way, it is nothing OT can have influence over -even if they wanted to or had the capability.
    No one is allowed to question or criticise the harmful parenting or family activities surrounding these kids.
    If you do, it is racism or because of colonisation – not because of gangs, drugs, alcohol and a disrespect for the law.

  Say what you like about this Labour government, they have radically changed our country. One thing you may not have noticed that they have changed is this – you don’t have to work anymore to get a benefit. Previously you had to be looking for work and if you were temporarily unemployed you got a benefit. Now there appears to be no pressure on people to get a job. I’m not talking about sick people, I’m talking about able-bodied people.
  
  One fellow, I’ll call him Trevor, I met through one of our church ministries where we feed the poor. I have never seen Trevor sober. This week I saw him outside the picture theatre and he told me he had six beers that day. His main problem was that he didn’t feel that he had enough beer. Him and his girlfriend were going to the movies. He sleeps on the streets and spends his money on alcohol and drugs. To be honest he seems happy enough living in his own little world, constantly drunk and stoned.
  
  But here is the thing. He is happy in his own little world. Are you happy to be paying for it?

    In my opinion this is a good outcome. The so-called “Hollywood celebrities” are doing Wellington a big favour. The proposed development was ugly and better suited to somewhere where few could see it, rather than dominating such a prominent site. I agree with Benedict that the occupiers should have been moved on a long time ago, but in the end this dispute between one group of (predominantly) Maori and another group (the one who sold the property to the developer) achieved the right outcome for the land itself even if it wasn’t what the occupying group were demanding.

      No, not analogous. Oprah is in no way responsible for the destruction caused by the Maui fires, whereas Jackson has been vocal in opposition to the Shelley Bay project, thus encouraging the illegal occupiers, and provided support to legal and political challenges. He is thus partly responsible for the increased expense and reduced potential profitability of the project and hence the site. Further, I do not think Oprah actually has bought any damaged Maui land, whereas Jackson definitely has bought Shelley Bay. We are not told what the price was, but there must be a reason why he didn’t simply outbid Cassells in the first place.

  This is nothing to do with “mob” rule, this is more about correcting the deals done by the Wellington Company with local iwi, and the speed of resource consent approval by the Wellington City Council that allowed this housing development to be approved, this and the realisation by Ian Cassels that with the current economic climate he probably couldn’t afford to complete the project. The deal with WCC meant that the Wellington Company were going to pay $10 million for the upgrade of , water, electricity, sewerage and roading, to the site and the good people of Wellington would pay the rest (supposedly another $10 million). Given that LGWM could only build a single pedestrian crossing for $2.5 million I think some people in the WCC were high at the time they agreed to the “deal of the century”. To add insult to injury I wet myself laughing reading Tory Whanau’s comments about the fact that there was going to be “affordable” housing included in the development.

    Affordable housing on that site is and always was a nonsense.
    
    But that doesn’t mean the development wouldn’t have helped with housing affordability in Wellington.
    
    If you have four houses for sale and five buyers, one of the buyers will not be able to afford a house. Add another house for sale – it doesn’t matter whether the newly added house is more or less expensive than all or some of the existing four – and prices will adjust until the fifth richest buyer is able to afford the fifth best house.
    
    Tory doesn’t understand this, but we are not obliged to share her ignorance.

Sad to see him go but he has tom give three months notice and will wait to get his one time flooded townhouse in Parnell back – Don’t mention AK Council as it is over 6 months bureaucratic delayed so far.

  How sad is it that Clark, of all people, refused to sign the declaration due to advice of crown law, but Key was happy to sign it. As I understand it, Key felt it was aspirational and relatively meaningless. Hmm. Not so sure in hindsight that was such a clever move!
  
  My big concern is if National win (and this is looking likely but not guaranteed – lots can happen and the big bribes will come from Labour), unless ACT have a really strong presence in a coalition, National will not make any big move on the treaty itself. Just like Key, there are too many who don’t see it as a big deal – other fish to fry etc. National have said they will unwind co-governance – I have my doubts whether they truly will but let’s take them at their word – great. The problem is that this is just kicking the can down the road – the treaty and treaty principles needs to resolved as this is the cause of activist-led interpretation and it needs to be resolved. Better to resolve it under a National / ACT government than a Labour government – remember, Labour will probably get back in at some point – maybe 3 terms or more, but they will be back.
  
  If National go on to win the election, I personally hope they don’t do quite well enough that they don’t need to concede ground on the treaty issue to ACT. Unless this is resolved now, a future Labour / Green / Maori government will resolve it and just like Key with the declaration, we might well look back and think, hmm – that didn’t work out so well!

It appears older Parisians, voted (younger Millennials & Gen Zs didn’t vote) to ban the scooters from Paris’s streets, because they are the blight they are.

The irony is huge, as E-scooters are lauded for being part of the active mode solution for transport, that is they are not motor cars. However, those who voted for the ban did so because of dangerous use by those that use them and because of the way they litter the streets when parked up

Nauseating puff piece in the Whoreald today about Ashley Bloomfield, repeating the nonsensical claim that he helped ‘save thousands of lives during the covid pandemic.’

The border closure and lockdowns MIGHT have delayed some deaths, IF actions had been taken to prepare the medical system for when it eventually got here. Those are very big ‘IFs’ and ‘MIGHTs’.

There is clear evidence now that all of the policies implemented caused far more harm than any short term protection they gave. Hiding under the bed for 18 months simply delayed the inevitable.

Nothing of any practical use was done during this interlude, instead they bet the bank on an experimental technology masquerading as a vaccine.

Anyway, of note to me was the revelation in the article that Bloomfield originated at the WHO. He was there, in Geneva in 2011, long before he came back to NZ to become DG of Health and in charge of the moronic covid responses.

The family of five spent a year in Geneva in 2011 when Bloomfield worked for the World Health Organisation (WHO), so it is familiar territory for them.

Job done in NZ, now St Ash is on his way back to his masters at the WHO. This is the important part, take note of this and revisit in 6 months.
Bloomfield makes this apparently nothing comment in the interview.

In Geneva, he is co-chairing a process that involves all 194 member countries of the WHO.

“It’s a big piece of work around the International Health Regulations and updating those. It’s rewarding, it’s challenging and it’s nice not to be in the thick of it any more, as the saying goes.”

  Like babies many New Zealanders will think that ‘The Government’ just magics up the money to pay for this – not realising that it is their taxes which must go up to pay for this largesse.
  
  New Zealanders either pay for their dental care directly or they pay through their taxes – it is a great left lie to use the word ‘free’ in any way in describing this.

  The sleeze is coming to the fore with this recent announcement. My dentist actually prefers not to touch Winz (taxpayer) funded patients.
  This will only reinforce the attitudes of many, who have good private patients already, and will not want unreliable Labour/Green leeches.

      The statement about Chinese v. Indians was made in a secretly recorded conversation between Bridges and former MP Jami-Lee Ross.
      
      They were talking about who would be potentiallly the most lucrative party donors.
      
      Now, which of the two would would be more likely to release a touchy private conversation?
      
      Here is a crucial bit as reported in the Herald of 19 October 2018:
      
      The two discussed a $100,000 donation to the National Party and also potential candidates and a dinner Bridges shared with businessman Zhang Yikun.
      
      “Two Chinese would be nice but then you know, would it be one Chinese and one Filipino? Or, you know, what do we do?” Bridges was heard saying.
      
      Ross replied: “Two Chinese would be more valuable than two Indians I have to say.”
      
      Then Bridges said: “Yeah, which is what we’ve got at the moment, right?”
      
      So it was Ross who made the comparison, though Bridges seemed to have agreed.
      
      Neither used the derogatory term “Chinaman”.

When police knocked on Julia Kravtsova’s door, she thought it was her ex-husband bringing their kids home from gymnastics.

Instead, she was told Ilaria, 8, and Ivan, 11, along with their dad Pavel Kravtsov were alive but injured after their car and a truck carrying oysters collided on Woodcocks Rd in Kaipara Flats just before 6.30pm on Wednesday.

“Grab a blanket and come with us”, the police officer said.

She rushed to the scene still in her work uniform, without her phone, purse, or medications, expecting to “reunite with her children shortly”, said Kravtsova’s friend and employer at Angels Grooming Parlour, Angela Anderson.

I am wondering if the staffing of the election has become a problem. Last election the recruitment of the thousands of temporary workers needed was done directly by the Electoral Commission and was done on a face-to-face basis. This election the recruitment has been outsourced to a private agency and has become an on-line process. The on-line process is hard to navigate and complete. This may have put off many of those who typically do this work, when they found how difficult the recruitment process has now become. Persuading people to apply is still occurring only a month out from voting starting. Is it going to be a repeat of what happened when the Census went from being face-to-face to on-line?
