In light of the impending climate crisis, NeverMindTheBollocks hereby challenges Chris Hipkins to:

* Close every parking garage rented/owned by public agency head offices in Wellington.
* Close the Parliamentary garage also. Turn it into emergency accommodation.
* Sell the Ministerial BMWs & Audis & sack the chauffeurs.
* Issue every MP with a bicycle, with an electric bike for the fat, elderly or infirm. Or a bus pass.

If the climate crisis is as serious as you say, you’ll dismiss objections as short sighted denialism and confidently campaign on this overwhelmingly popular policy.

    On the subject of leadership stupidity – I wonder where all the electricity for the new electrical furnace at the steel works will come from. Surely not from imported inferior Indonesian coal at the Huntly power station………….
    I mean NZ has soooooo much excess power that warnings are issued every time there is a frost in the north island that the network possibly cant handle the need.

      It is going to come from all the electricity saved from all the houses retro fitted with insulation etc.
      
      Minister Megan was so in control of matters she was telling anyone who would listen that this scheme would be so successful that Genesis would be able to turn off one generator at Huntley. Really? ….and then yesterday we learn about the wonderous scheme at Glenbrook.
      
      My question is, does Megan, James and Hopkins actually know what they are doing & talking about?

        Unrealised or am I wrong, I suspect, they are leaving the Country in th biggest financial and social mess ever envisaged, since the Treaty.
        And it will not be them to clear it up but our Children and Grandchildren.
        But Maori will have all the answers as they will be in power after three terms of the new Government.

        Apparently @Xquenda Contact Energy have a plan to ensure that all the electricity required will come from wind farms and as such will be low-cost renewable. The other point loudly being made is that NZ has/will have a surplus of scrap cars to be recycled as we invest in EVs. Do I live on the same planet.

    More likely to increase it by 1%. The idiots seem to have forgotten that we burn imported coal to generate the electricity for their clean electric furnace. Conversion and transmission losses will make the coal powered electric furnace half as efficient as the old coal fired one is. $140 million spent to increase our CO2 output.   Members will only, walk cycle or use public transportation.
  They will require the Electricity Authority to turn their power off rather than burn coal.

  They will not use resource hungry electronic devices.
  They will eat no food that includes evil carbon.
  With more than ten percent of the population voting green, they will make a significant statement by their example, and lose the title of self righteous hypocracy by not vocally attacking or trying to blame others.

      Gender is not a “concept” mike. It was not that long ago that man believing he was a woman was considered to have mental health issues. Just like a schizophrenic, or someone suffering pi-polar. In fact, gender dysphoria was considered to be a “delusion”, which of course falls under schizophrenia.         I first came across the concept in the 3rd form in French…. a gendered language… Nouns can be masculine or feminine.
        
        Then, horrors… Latin:
        nouns and adjectives fall into 3 genders… Masculine, feminine and neuter.
        
        and that’s where Gender should remain…..with languages and words.
        
        However, in the 1980s… some plant biologists began to look at the manner in which plants vary their sexual expression with season, or growth..
        
        The poisoned Professor – David Lloyd of Canterbury Uni -was one of the main researchers in the field of plant gender.

      I think you need an English lesson as well as a science one. Gender actually is biological too. As a word and meaning it is biological. Study the etymology.
      
      The root word (inadvertent pun) is gen which means something produces or is produced:
      
      Examples are gene, genetic/s, progeny, generate/generation, genus, genesis, congenital, genitals…
      I could go on.

      I don’t think it is widely known the term “gender identity” was invented by a New Zealander who was born in Morrinsville in 1921.
      His name was John William Money.

Apropos of the theft of $140m+ from taxpayer’s pockets being gifted to NZ Steel, one unasked question is whether there is sufficient scrap steel available; a second is whether the carbon cost of shipping that scrap steel to Glenbrook has been factored into the headline figures.

      That’s right, it’s reported by NZME that there’s 6 fuel retailers in Whangarei, actually, there’s 3 plus Ampol.
      I’m still wondering if the purchase of Z by Ampol was conditional on the refinery closing to make their Australian assets more viable.

      That refinery. It should have been bought back by the Govt.
      There was a ship loaded with Avgas that was contaminated. It could have been refined to Diesel I think. But NZ sent the ship away.
      Did that cost anything? I never found out – all very quiet.

      If you are talking about the refinery at Marsden Point, it is owned by NZ Refining, which, if memory serves me correctly, has as it’s biggest shareholder, Exxon Mobil 14%. Ampol hold about 12% and BP 8%. So it is highly unlikely that Ampol closed the refinery. They would have had some influence. The biggest reason the refinery business was shut down was the current Government and Minister of Energy. Because: Morons.

  @NMTB apparently we have/will have a surplus of old vehicles to be recycled when we all buy EVs.. Problem solved, apart from getting them to Glenbrook. But we will solve that one too with the electrification of the railway system thus enabling low-cost transport for those dead cars. Or maybe it’s the 300,000 cars that are currently in Christchurch that are going to be recycled…

    Rail electrification. What is electrified up here in Auckland is different to Wellington electrification. You can not run the same engine from Wellington to Auckand.
    Sounds like there are three different systems, but I don’t know why. I have seen photos of a wire in Wellington that had ice on it. The power was arcing over and under. Many reports of fire, but it wasn’t fire.

  I posted yesterday that there will never be a risk/benefit analysis done on comparisons between the various methods of mass energy creation and storage or between electric vehicles vs ICE vehicles.
  Certainly not one report that includes every single aspect of how the resources needed for manufacture are acquired, sustainability of those resources, but in particular the costs associated with how these resources are dealt with when they come to the end of their useful life. Batteries are especially worthy of a close look.
  
  One commenter, KH, ridiculed my claim. I responded early this morning so it will likely be missed. I’ll repeat it here.
  
  I can’t prove a negative KH, that’s impossible. So you need to find me the reports that, if you are to be believed, must exist to prove that renewable energy does have a more positive cost/benefit than what currently exists.

  New Zealand does not need nuclear before 2050/2060. There are three reasons.
  First, there is substantial future opportunities in wind, hydro, geothermal and to a lesser extent solar.
  Second, Manapouri will available sometime in the next 25 years.
  Three, New Zealand will wait for the new generation nuclear, especially modular, to be well proven. That will take though to 2050, given that the first western modular reactor is yet to enter service. That is likely to be around 2030 at the earliest.

    Wayne – I believe that all of the “sustainable” energy production models you mention are more harmful to the environment than coal and gas powered generation. I believe that ICE vehicles are less harmful to the planet and more energy efficient than electric vehicles. I believe this to be true when all of the factors required for the various processes involved in generating the power are accounted for. In particular, the problem with disposal of components, like batteries and wind turbines, once their useful life is over.
    
    Do you have any source of evidence you can point me to that proves otherwise? I’m actually a fan of renewable energy when it’s feasible, or alternatives are impossible. I live fully off grid so you could say I “walk the walk”. But I believe the push for “net zero” is almost as stupid as the push for “zero road deaths”. Pipe dreams, totally unachievable.

        Aaah but think of all the carbon (carbon fibre widely used in turbine blade manufacture) that is permanently sequestered in those blades that will last forever and never break down in the soil or atmosphere. The equivalent to millions of tonnes of CO2 (cos as I understand it a couple of gallons of avgas generates tonnes and tonnes of CO2) must be locked away in those never-to-rot blades.     The problem with our “renewable” energy sources, primarily wind and solar is that they are unreliable and that you have to have back up supplies. Ultimately you have to have 100% backup because on a calm cold evening in winter you may have no wind or solar generation at all available.
    
    As the final lines of Bryan’s material says.
    
    “But if we had 100 per cent nuclear backup for solar and wind, we wouldn’t need the wind and solar plants at all!

        AFAIK seismic hazards are not a show stopper for nuclear reactors.
        
        In the case of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, my understanding is that it was the tsunami that caused the disaster. The reactors shut down when they detected the earthquake. However, the tsunami led to flooding which caused the failure of the emergency generators and loss of power to the circulating pumps.

    @Wayne given that at this minute 10:25 Monday 22 May 2023 we are currently generating approx 200 MW from the wind from an installed base of 1,000 MW, I cannot see how we are realistically going to grow our wind farm capability significantly in the next twenty years. Given it will take between 10 and 20 years to get a nuclear power plant online somebody somewhere should be planning for it now. Maybe with your political connections, you have some inside information but I suspect Megan is hoping the next generation of pies will heat themselves.

      The problem with starting the planning now is that the Modular reactors are still some years away. The first (Nuscale) won’t be in operation until around 2030. I guess quite a few will come into service in the 2030’s. Only then would the New Zealand energy providers seriously look at the option.
      On that basis, there is no point in starting serious planning till 2035 at the earliest.

    Imagine flat rate power bills with supply which is independent of the weather or the season. None of that is pie in the sky that is with existing technology. Now imagine the opportunities provided by Modular nuclear reactors, bringing stability and security to remote communities which currently lie at the end of fragile grids.

    It is not a stell plant that is being electrified, it is a scrap steel re heat process, i think the new steel will still be done with coal, but i could be wrong, but they are saying this is for scrap steel, the new steel will not go through the same process.

        I can tell you first hand Chinese steel is shit. Worked for a Trailer company for 50 years. The Chinese steel seems to have a lower melting point, so welding it to good steel give undercut welds. Not good to make 3 passes to make it look good. It is very visible when welding.
        The other thing is I have replaced broken fractured axles on Chinese imports. Not a good thing when an axle gets metal fatigue at 90kph.

      G, correct the new steel comes from iron sands (Fe3O4) and the oxygen needs to be removed, so heated with coal, the carbon in the latter does the job producing CO2 and iron. Not a reaction you can simply turn off and on because among other things it is temperature sensitive.
      
      There is experimentation underway at VUW where Hydrogen replaces the coal as the reductant and produces much more benign water.

      The furnace needs to be kept up to heat I think, but not sure.
      Something I do know about is hot dip Galvanising. It is at heat all of the time. When it is not running 24 hours the dross is racked over to hold the heat in.
      Only in larger shutdowns, say Christmas/New year, the zinc is ingoted, and the gas goes off and vats are cleaned. Find all sorts of shit down there that has fallen off the tie wires. Depending on the vat (kettle) size it is maybe 4 days to heat up to operating temperature again.

      That’s Demand Response in a nutshell. NZ Steel have cheap power due to bulk buying. When electricity prices spike, they sell it back into the market & make money. It’s not just them. Most major electricity users have DR contracts in one form or another.
      
      There’s a market of companies offering DR services. What’s interesting is that the Govt is mandating that Contact provide the DR, instead of leaving it to the market.
      
      Not that it really matters, except to the market participants directly affected. All of the generators have contracts to buy power from one another when they need it. Ultimately, when the sun doesn’t shine & the wind doesn’t blow, it’s Genesis coal that keeps the lights on & the furnace glowing. The point of mandating Contact, I suggest, is that when the awkward truth emerges, they can point to Contact & say it’s a private sector problem.

  FYI, Burning Carbon (coal, gas, wood etc) oxidises (adds oxygen from the air) to carbon to create CO2. The weight of carbon is 12 and CO2 is 48 so each Kg of carbon creates 4 kg of CO2, literally out of thin air. Most people like to quote the CO2 figure because it is bigger.

  Nationwide, it used to be about 15% (okay, I learned that figure years ago and haven’t seen an update).
  
  From TCNZ’s website: “The Teaching Council of New Zealand is the professional body for teachers…. working with and for around 150,000 registered and certificated teachers in NZ….”
  
  So 5500 teachers is 3.7% turnover in one year…. surely that indicates better staff retention than other industries?
  
  Therefore, it doesn’t sound like a problem to me…. after all, we need those vacancies for the new teachers emerging from the training pipeline each year.

Following the media reports that Bakmut in the Ukraine has been over-run by the Russians I looked up video reports of what the city looks like.
It looks like a German city after carpet bombings in WW2.

Now the big loser is of course Ukraine. The place is totally wrecked and the previous inhabitants have effectively permanently lost their home and property.
All because the Ukraine leadership wanted to join NATO.

Also there are reports of Ukrainian leadership corruption. The EU wont even think of EU membership for Ukraine until the corruption has been rooted out.
I am even more convinced that the big lowers in this conflict will be Ukraine – no matter what the final outcome is.
And the final outcome is by no means certain. With these F-16 jets being sold to them – on the condition that they are not used to attack Russian soil – it is inevitable that a mistake will happen and they will be used over Russian soil and that will/could be the excuse Russia needs to use battlefield nuclear weapons.

A 5ft2, 6 mths pregnant nurse who just finished a 12hr shift tried to steal a rental bike off a group of 5 6ft+ African American teen boys and tried to use her tears to get them killed.

The poor victims had video evidence even.

They got her suspended from her job and she got doxxed and everything.

Of course, anyone with a brain could tell where this was going. She rented the bike and had receipts and it was the group of teens who were trying to steal it off her. The whole thing was just a power trip by them trying to destroy a white woman and make themselves famous.

See there were at least eight sperate burglaries in Christchurch overnight – supermarket, liquor stores, tech stores etc.

I’ve got one construction project I’m closing out, retail, that’s been open since Waitangi weekend and has already been hit 5 times! The owners and tenants have already been told by their insurers that the premiums will absolutely skyrocket next year – hate to see what the excess will be!!!

Just reading about new coal fired electricity plants in China. During 2022 and Q1 of 2023, China has consented 126 GW of NEW coal plants. This is on top of the more than 1,000 GW of coal capacity already in place.

I did the arithmetic, and I double checked. China will have coal fired electricity generation capacity equal to 1,600 times the installed coal capacity of New Zealand at Huntly.

An interesting comment on New Zealand being unable to trademark “manuka honey”. Manuka Charitable Trust chair Pita Tipene said it was disappointed, but undeterred by the ruling.

“We remain resolute in protecting our reo Maori and the precious taonga and today’s ruling in no way deters us…. “

Point 1: There was no manuka honey, nor any other kind of honey, harvested in NZ until the British colonists introduced bees.

Point 2: Manuka, the bush on which the bees graze for this type of honey, is indigenous to southern Australia as well to New Zealand.

ZB reporting that a major ‘NI-Bus-Operator’ has recruited nearly 500 new drivers since the beginning of the year.
The vast majority of them being from either Fiji or the Philippines.

Not only that, I see where from today, AT are allowing people to take large dogs on buses as well. Only criteria is that the passenger has to clean up any ‘mess’ they make.

You can imagine how well that’s going to turn out. LOL!!

It has occurred to me why the university bookshop had to close downtown. It was located in the building housing the school of business and government and adjacent to the law school. All three of these quasi-disciplines being generally immune to book-learning, it was possibly always an unpropitious place to sell literature.

The WHO proposals to take more control over health policies currently being discussed at meetings have been touched on here, but nothing on MSM that I’ve noticed.
They are proposing amendments to the International Health Regulations which will transfer power from individual states to the unelected WHO and in particular, to unelected Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

It’s a potential nightmare. Here are a couple of links I recommend to anyone at all interested in finding out more about another push to undemocratic, centralised global control.

To make steel you dissolve carbon in the molten metal oxide. The carbon will react with the metal oxide to form CO2. Also steel needs carbon in it. Raw iron without carbon is soft. So plenty of carbon will still be needed to make steel and CO2 will be emitted even if you do use electricity to heat your furnaces.

Heating the furnaces with electricity is inefficient and expensive. So the steel mill will not be competitive with those in China etc unless heavily subsidised. Our taxes are going to have to go to support this nonsense in perpetuity just so Hipkins and the Greens can indulge in a bit of useless virtue signalling.

  I am so old that I remember when I was a newly hatched junior doctor, getting faxes with Fauci instructions that it would be absurdly cruel, reprehensible, immoral and just so very bad, to stop gay people having biologically unnatural relationships with each other in bathhouses, to try and control the AIDS epidemic. As a consequence, literally hundreds of thousands of people who depended upon blood products to stay alive, notably but not only the people with coagulation disorders, died horribly because they got infected by careless people.
  
  Lo and behold, decades later. Fauci insisted that we had to stay apart from everybody else so that we didn’t all die from the WuFlu.

Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardren has reflected on her time as head of the country during the Covid-19 pandemic in a speech during the opening of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) 76th assembly in Geneva.

She joked about being “currently between jobs at the moment”, which earned a laugh from the crowd, after speaking of the critical importance of WHO.

We just watched the closuing arguments on OneEwes in the case of 2 guys who are accused of shooting an innocent teenager at a party.
The crown are calling it murder….the lawyer for the defence – mamslaughter.

Me, nor my partner have never been on a jury….wish we were on this one.
