Here is a very good watch regards the Ukraine war. I know DPF and a bunch of others dismiss this type of commentary and analysis as pro-Russia propaganda, but I’d encourage you to open your mind for 30 minutes and have a watch.

Kim Iversen’s does a decent commentary of a recent presentation by John Mearsheimer, a Professor at Chicago University and a well-respected political scientist and geopolitics expert. He talks about three things;
1. Why there is a war
2. Where is the war at right now
3. What is most likely to happen next

He puts himself in the shoes of the Ukrainians, the Russians and NATO. The ultimate conclusion is very scary stuff, and I think the world is past the point of no return. Others, such as Martin Armstrong also agree with this.

  It’s hoped those downticks are from people who listened to the full presentation, and then disagreed with Mearsheimer’s analysis. However that’s considered unlikely as many find life easier to believe a simpler interpretation (e.g. expansionist Putin is mad) of complex geopolitical tensions, parroted by the same corporate news organisations that justified atrocities like an unlawful (nil UN support) invasion of Iraq based upon falsified US intelligence that described Weapons of Mass Destruction that could reach Europe.
  With many such examples of blatantly false war propaganda in the West, you would expect people today to be a little more circumspect of believing the MSM narratives.

    I didn’t bother listening to his analysis because the first item on the list tells me the video is completely irrelevant. You don’t need a Professor from Chicago University to tell you why there’s a war – Russia moved their troops across the border into a sovereign country. Whether Putin is mad as a hatter or completely sane is also irrelevant. His army is killing (and worse) civilians. Russian history is only interesting to buck toothed anorak wearers, and you can stick your media conspiracies and geopolitical whataboutism, well, you know where.

      Russian history should interest you if you are a New Zealander. We sent thousands of young men to Europe in 1939 to fight Nazism and it was the Russians that did the job of defeating that regime. The Eastern Front was where the victory came from. General MacArthur acknowledged that and held the Allied troops back from taking Berlin to give the honour to the Russians.

        @cjn. Not Russia, the Soviet Union, of which Belarus and Ukraine were a part of. Where many of the civilian atrocities happened and where many of the fighting force was drawn from. Stalin wasn’t even ethnic Russian.
        To give Russians full credit is a highly dubious version of history and chauvinistic.
        To further erode your credibility, General MacArthur was in the Pacific theater, it was Eisenhower who was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. He didn’t hold back Allied forces to ‘honor’ the ‘Russians’. He did it because it was pointless fighting for a trophy city that they’d have to hand over to the Soviets as part of the Potsdam Conference.

  There are as many views on the politics and the morality of this war as the number of people asked.
  But the more important aspect is the reality of the situation – which is that no matter what happens from here on, the big loser – by a long shot – is the Ukraine.
  The country is slowly being wrecked. Infrastructure is shot. Roads, bridges, buildings, the distribution systems (roads, rail, electricity) power stations, etc, etc are being destroyed. Some of that destruction has been done by Ukrainian forces.
  In the US the military are starting to say things like “Hey – China is in this direction. Why are we depleting our inventory of top grade materials for the Ukraine?”
  The reality is that the East of Ukraine is ethnically Russian. They speak Russian, theyve been in armed conflict with Ukraine for years.
  When the war finishes – and it will (either because the US says they are no longer interested or the EU says that its time for Ukraine to talk) the Ukraine will be a ruined country. And Russia will not be paying the fix the mess and the EU will call for everyone who supported the Ukraine to put up.
  Yes – its all very smug to say the Russians are naughty and its good to feel to be on the moral high ground – but will all those anti Russians put their hands in their pockets when asked ….. I think not.

    Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you found some value in the link I posted. It amazes me that DPF and at least 50% of the Kiwi Blog followers soak up the MSM rubbish on the Ukraine situation, but on most other topics they can see through the BS. Take the TVNZ Nazi reference, we all see through that, but as soon as Russia is mentioned the “good guy vs bad guy” blinkers go on and suddenly the MSM is 100% correct. And the Ukraine situation has the real potential to turn into “The Last World War” if it continues to escalate as it is. So this REALLY matters more than any other issue. I’m gob smacked at how blind most people are at the moment.

      There have been plenty of videos which show the Azov group [now demolished ] in bunkers with Nazi symbols on the walls, their uniforms and their skin tattoos. Conditioned TV-watching liberals wouldn’t watch that reality though. Luxon is compellingly ignorant. He compared the coke snorting dancing queen comic Zelensky as a modern day Chrurchill . With 6 years in Opposition to plan, and taking into account ‘events dear boy’, I hope a different government will be looking to get some runs on the board very very quickly. As an example, National had a revised RMA Bill ready to go in 2017, the result of planning for a less problematic set of parties.It would be surprising if that is not the case also this coming October.

  More to the point, what does the conflict in Ukraine have to do with us? We aren’t at war with Russia. There are plenty of other conflicts going on around the world, yet we never hear about them. Why not? We never hear about them because the interests of the powerful don’t require that our attention be focused on these conflicts (in fact, the less we know about these conflicts the better, given the involvement of these powerful people). I’m not of the school that supports a given country in a conflict, simply because I am told to do so. Many who support Ukraine (for reasons they couldn’t articulate) would probably support Russia tomorrow without blinking, if the TV or Twitter told you to.

      It is about NATO and its encroachment Eastwards.
      In the eyes of the Russians, This is aggression.
      Unfortunately Ukraine is collateral damage which , I believe was not the intension of Russia.
      The agression can be seen from both sets if shoes and in all honesty Nato had been warned continuously for the last decade that Ukraine was a Red line.
      With that in mind, And all verifiable.

  Ardern tried. Fortunately, she neither had the in-depth understanding and intellect nor the strength in her team to make an enduring change. The damage she inflicted has been severe but it can be repaired. Focused dynamic leadership that has integrity and the balls could undo much of the worst of the Ardern years.
  
  Is that type of leadership waiting in the wings? Time will tell. A great deal of the workload and initiative will be on Seymour’s and his team’s shoulders. The jury is out. We wont know for a year or two. What we do know is that it is absolutely crucial the Ardern legacy gets smashed.

Radio NZ is panicking, trying to find out what happened after being caught out with their latest broadcast of disinformation/misinformation after passing off counterfeit and forged fake news items and this time attributing them to Reuters!

Why their big fuss? RNZ regularly broadcasts biased misinformation and leftist propaganda – so often that we (the listeners) are no longer even surprised! They evidently don’t realise they’re doing it – it’s just their devious woke “reality”, evidently you have to be outside looking in to even see it! Will they go back and correct Corrin Dan’s lies on Morning Report? Or Suzee Fergusson’s wild lies, hysterical exaggerations and disinformation before she was dumped?

If RNZ have nothing to hide, open it up to the public to identify their mis/disinformation (“lies” is easier) for them. There are so cringeworthy and regular, there will be a continuous supply for them to (cough) “investigate”.

  After not watching a lot of rugby over recent years, it’s amazing how far behind the production is compared to the nrl.
  
  Also two high tackles to jordie Barrett went unnoticed, both would be yellow cards if a hurricane had done it with about 400 replays.
  
  A thriller none the less, I can’t keep up with the rule changes but it’s a bit more watchable now then previous seasons, just need to drop the league rules they have crammed into it (50/22 and goal line droput)

    The goal line dropout is an abomination, as for 50/22! WTF is that about. Union is already a kick heavy game and you want to encourage more kicking? (I suppose the idea is to make wingers drop back to cover the kick and open space out wide, but that is a risky business spreading wide against outside in and rush defenses)
    
    If the want things to improve they should bring back rucking and outlaw the jackel…. would encourage far more bend, bind and drive over the tackle – sucking in defenders and opening space.
    
    The lack of genuine back play is horrible – the Pod centric attacks and the endless box and high cross field bomb kicking is incredibly boring to watch

Of course RNZ is doing the right thing looking into the “spin” on items on the Ukraine war. Though it should no way have taken such a long time to get on to it.

  If the hospital management/leadership is incapable of collecting data (coz of it being too hard and someone from the government might accuse them of racism) perhaps they should ask the Police for their input.
  In the article, government health employees are careful to explain that unlawful disturbances- whoever is responsible – are reported to the Police.
  If the Police attend, there should be a record of that and of who was involved.
  But, the fact is, gangs are special interest groups to this government and allegedly, to the Police.
  Gang rules must be respected.
  Hospital rules – not so much.

      Why don’t we walk through a hospital to calculate ED waiting times, nurse to patient ratios, or the average length of time for post-Op patient discharge?
      
      A: Because we don’t run/staff/manage the hospitals day to day, as members of the public.
      
      Of course violent incidents (threats/intimidation/assault), and details like gang aspects, should be measured – just like other metrics around health services.
      
      Because what is measured gets managed.

      Precisely what the government DOESN’T do well anymore, while being 100% critical in running a private enterprise.
      Measurements are for proving the value of $ spend or demonstrating improvements and identifying risks and issues.
      The current government however announces spending in itself like a victory, and then proceeds to gaslight and smokescreen.
      Yes, gangs are a problem in general. Police should be responding immediately any time they fail to act within rules and norms.
      Police were happy to tackle a shopper entering a supermarkets without a mask, so why not thugs who are unwelcome/uncooperative in an ICU ward?

  There was an issue with one of the gangs, mongrel mob I think, in Christchurch hospital a month or so ago. One of them was in for treatment so there were loads of them around. They were causing a nuisance, commandeering parking spaces, revving the bikes, intimidating staff and other visitors. Hospital did the square root of fuck all and I seem to recall the police weren’t keen either – probably too busy ticketing folks doing a km or two over the limit somewhere – you know, the real criminals!
  
  Sure that would have been recorded by Te Whatu Ora and sure they would have required all patches to be removed – not!

  The Greens talk about lifting everyone above the poverty line. But, poverty in NZ is expressed as a percentage of the mean income, IIRC. By definition, there’s only one way of achieving that, which is to have everyone in identical incomes.

  Six years on we get this menace Shaw telling us “we need to end poverty”. These people deserve notjing but derision.
  
  The policies of the last 6 years have CAUSED poverty. What are the surest two ways to cause misery to low income folk with children?
  
  1. Increase rents (thanks Jacinda, Grant, Phil and Adrian)
  
  2. Run monetary policies that increase food prices.
  
  And James Shaw now says “Oh we need to end poverty.”

  But today, Tame turned it into an interrogation about capital gains tax. Ardern rejected any look at CGT, and she also banned gas and oil exploration, another line of attack for Tame. As for Luxon’s housing investments, this seems to be the most common savings line for all MPs and former MPs. Luxon seemed to do well until Tame honed in on CGT.

The best “read” for a long, long time popped up on my twitter feed (ironically) this morning.
This manifesto of 35,000 words was posted in the Washington Times in 1995, at the request of Ted Kaczynski, the unabomber, to stop him from continuing his bombing campaign.
It is in the vein of Jordan Peterson type opinion on human behaviour, society, etc and just an amazing commentary that had me nodding my head all the way through. Definitely not a read to hold the interest of anyone who wants just the headline.

Just watched Q A. Tame interviewing Chris Luxom. Well I guess loosely it was an interview. Tame was appalling, unprofessional and I hesitate to use some words as they are not allowed on this Blog. Politics of envy and Tame obviously has a chop on BOTH shoulders. TVNZ got an earful from me. Health warning dont watch if you have a weak heart or high blood pressure. And leave the drinks cabinet alone the sun is not yet over the yardarm

  Yes – it was a poor performance by Tame. But I also wonder why Luxon basically played Tame’s game? If Luxon is looking for a winning strategy for taking on Tame he needs to study Nicola Willis’ approach. That line of questioning about his investment properties was totally uncalled for and Luxon should have taken Tame to task at that point.

  I generally tend to follow a few simple rule with Tame.
  
  If he’s on TV (usually because the wife is watching), I leave the room. If he’s on radio (often on a panel on HDPA) I turn off the radio. If I see any article by him, I don’t read it.
  
  Simple but effective.
  
  I’m always willing to consider alternative points of view, but I can’t tolerate partisan bullshit like he constantly utters (and there are a few on the right that are the same and I avoid them also). He add’s nothing to any debate other than his utterly one-sided, vacuous view of the world.
  
  He’s best ignored.

I saw a headline telling us that the hydro lakes are at record levels.
This seems like a good thing, so obviously can’t be due to ‘climate change!!’ (/s). How on earth could it happen then?
Could it possibly be that ‘the climate’ is actually very variable, and we have always had very dry and very wet periods?
And yes, I know that other factors other than rainfall/snow affect the lake levels.

  Three years of La Nina have left the hydro lakes full. However the weather cycle is in the process of reverting to an El Nino pattern, which leads to pressure on the lakes due to generally dry, windy conditions in the east. We should be grateful for small mercies, this year at least.

    Don’t count on it. We’ve come very close to disaster in recent times. The Transpower live data site has shown all generation types going full tilt, and if the ‘liquid’ generation (aka diesel), then you can be sure there’s not much left in reserve.

  Well, at the beginning of floods in Auckland they mentioned the added water in the atmosphere from the Tongan volcano. They stated heavey rains will happen until that water dissipates, they said the same in Aussie. Since then the volcano water has disappeared from reporting (all though reported by the weather man to start with)

GE/GM technology has developed quickly since Helen Clark’s government banned it in the early 2000’s. There is no good reason to retain the ban, provided there is competent oversight. And all the while, we are lagging behind countries who have “followed the science” and embraced GM.

People who are complaining that National is simply Labour Lite will have to eat their words as far as this policy goes. There’s plenty more to come, and voters in October will be presented with a clear choice between National and Labour.

I have given up watching National leaders being interviewed on TV. It’s pointless to expect useful information to be introduced because of the interview style and bias. It’s going to get a lot worse before the election, the tag line was obvious yesterday with the Hitler references. When the repeaters talk like that, there have to be serious questions asked as to how we got to a point that the media here are no better than their Russians counterparts.

National are doing the right thing with a strategy of focussing on public meetings and social media to present Luxon and National policies unpolluted by the media’s bias presented as analysis.

  Agree wholeheartedly HJ. Over the last couple of days I have seen lots of social media posts referring to Tame as a National Party stooge, and even suggesting he was Luxon’s publicist. Did that ever go out the window this morning!
  
  As for the Lebensborn/Hitler question to Luxon this week, the questioner was one Cushla Norman from TVNZ. It’s a pretty appalling display of bias from a journalist employed by the state-owned TVNZ, and one can only imagine how much worse things could have become has the merger of TVNZ and RNZ gone ahead, especially given the revelations of the last 48 hours.

National needs to make sure for once they have some clear talking points like raising “you can’t talk about farm emissions and not accept GE modified feed is a solution” and “you can’t accept the science is settled on climate change and covid vaccines but not that the science on GE/GM makes sense”

Polling in Germany is interesting where the AFD, Alternative For Germany has doubled its support since the last election in 2021 and is poised to replace the Social Democrats as the second most popular party after the Christian Democrats. Interesting too is the reaction of the other parties to this surge for the AFD, like how can it be. Suggest the answer is largely in polls on immigration, that show 65% are very concerned about this issue.

Daily Mail reports Air Crash in the Amazon Jungle story:
Small plane crashes in jungle.
3 adults killed – mother of four, pilot and an “indigenous leader”.
The four children, aged between 13 years and 11 months, survive crash – apparently uninjured.
Children live in totally isolated conditions for 40 days and have just been rescued in reasonable conditions.
Believe it or not.
Is it unusual for three adults to be killed in a small plane air crash and four kids, including a baby, survive?

    Artificial intelligence has been around for a long time. It’s teen through what some called “AI winters,” when funding dried up because the current type of AI failed to meet expectations.
    
    As two current writers on the technologies put it: “AI is in a new hype phase because of machine learning, a technology that helps computers learn from data”.
    
    Everywhere at present hypsters are touting AI as the “new” technology and economic panacea.
    
    What if those who would control free speech, people like Ardern and the bullshit Disinformation Project mob, had been round in the time of Gutenberg?
    
    Oh that’s right, they were! There were book burnings, smashing of printing presses, executions of rebel writers, and the Roman Catholic Church’s Index Librorum Prohibitorum — its list of banned books.

There’s a little article in the Horrid about Breakfast presenter Matty McClean and his hubby currently honeymooning in Spain.

My partner reckoned it was a bit rich to see them described as “A-Listers”….
but thinking about it, I’m not so sure 😛

Saw a sign above the bridge in town with a website for people to go to for help with abuse. Problem is the website was a Māori name. Surely it would be better to have a website url that everyone can remember, a simple one.

How is any poor widow/widower with a property of any reasonable value suddenly going to be able to come up with funds to pay this wealth tax? The minute one of a couple has passed away the other has twice as much “wealth” to be taxed on. From where is the income supposed to magically appear? Why on earth should they be forced to sell the property they may well have had for 40 years (and probably scrimped and saved to purchase in the first place) and move to a whole new- less expensive – area. Uprooted from friends, clubs, health services etc.
Or have I got it wrong about what the Greens are wanting?

The Greens propose a 1.5 % tax on all trust assets to prevent the wealthy from putting their asssets into a trust. They seem not to have noticed that hundreds of thousands of ordinary New Zealanders have their homes in family trusts for asset protection reasons, usually because the owners are in some business or trade where they have personal financial exposure. So Joe Tradie from Te Atatu who is sitting in a $1,000,000 mortgage free family home owned by his trust will have to come up with an extra 15,000 per year in tax. This Green proposal will piss off far more than just the richest 0.7%

  Assets being in a trust is irrelevant. It is the assets, not the ownership of them. Otherwise the solution would simply be to transfer ownership.
  
  Anyone with a mortgage free home and who has saved their entire lives will have over $2 million.

    Shaw and Davidson are two halves of an idiot sandwich. You can’t tax houses, businesses, superannuation funds and even shares as if they were liquid assets. Anyone who is cashflow poor will have to offload them – and who would take those assets on? It will be a giant fire sale of misery, people forced to sell up at giveaway prices because they can’t afford to pay the tax, either that or have some leech of a bank suck out all its value bit by bit until they die. I can’t stand James Shaw, every time I see his pudgy little face it makes me want to vomit.

    Sorry Rouppe but you are spectacularly wrong there.
    
    The Trust tax starts at dollar one, not 4 million (for a couple). That affects >100,000 people.
    There are all sorts of tax related issues re transferring ownership out of Trusts, including Brightline. There is also obviously the loss of the reason for having the property in a Trust – asset protection, that’s huge.
    
    So people will have the option – risk the loss of their homes, and all the reduction of risk involved in that, or pay 1.5% of the value of their house in tax each year. There is no reason for it either, it is easy enough to include Trust assets in the individual’s calculation so it seems to me that they’re actually going after asset protection.

    I agree but if the police can’t respond (for whatever reason) then the public should help out. Not vigilante violence but perhaps simply detaining the perpetrators until the police can take over if it can be done safely.

      What happened at this incident was no one called the police no one got involved. I don’t think I would get involved either. I would call the police, video it for police evidence. There’s no way you’ll intervene with these little thugs without getting injuried.
