I beleive that the starting point before discounts was 3 years or a little more. He ended up with 2 years or a little less so that allowed for Home D. Let us say it was 3 years and 2 years. That makes a 50% reduction. National has proposed a maximum of 40%. It that had been in place he would not have been elgible for Home D.

The Post, or at least the title, might be available cheap if Stuff collapses when National slashes State media subsidies.

A dream: DPF floats Kiwiblog and begins a free-speech media chain, registered in Samoa (it’s on the EU tax haven black list) or the Seychelles or such. A final decision would depend on the base with the best defence against all-out libel assault.

Imagine long annual meetings on a warm, laid-back island.

I found the Police Commissioner’s statement somewhat confusing as he stated the gunman had a known risk profile for domestic violence, but then Coster suggested this risk had not changed.

In doing so I took this (it was only a bit of home D me Lord) as the establishment’s defence for the gunman being given home D, and furthermore a license to work in the public domain.

What are we to take from this? It indicates that any known perpetrator of serious domestic violence (against loved ones) is considered a safe risk with the general public.

If that isn’t a concept right out of the Orwellian double speak manual, then I don’t know what is.

  Coster had me swearing at the device when I heard him on-air making some big deflection around the fact the shooter was not a firearms licence holder; he claimed they want to know whether the gun came from a legal owner who onsold the gun, or whether it came from someone whose security arrangements weren’t up to standard.
  In both cases he deflect blame for illegal firearms onto legal owners. Part of the selling of the gun registry to the public I guess.
  However, firearms will come across the border, and most circulate on the black markets criminal to criminal, and the actual break down of the source of illegal weapons is something the police actively misrepresent as part of their ideology.
  Coster manages to drive another wedge between the law abiding and the police, instead of promising to hammer the scum that need it, and disarm criminals first and foremost.

    It is a mystery how many firearms might come across the border/ports (small handguns), some turning up with gangs are even being 3D printed now. So why turn this killing into pointing the finger around the origin only supposedly via legal owners?
    Military firearms such as often are shown as a result of police raids are not coming from burglaries of even ordinary gun owners – yet I have never heard direct tracing to a theft successfully being made by Police, even of the military-style and already-requiring-registration types. Serial number ground off perhaps? Or never registered?
    
    Cut down .22 or shotguns (also popular) might have come from theft, but the theft does not mean that ‘security was an issue’ anyway. A lock only keeps out an honest man.
    Surely most guns circulate on the black markets criminal to criminal, and the actual break down of the source of illegal weapons is something the police actively misrepresent as part of their ideology to go after soft targets.

    To point out the obvious …….if the weapon was legitimate it will have serial numbers from which I’m sure even Coster could track and trace its origins.
    
    Conversely if the serial numbers were obscured, then again even Coster should be able to instantly deduce the previous owner was likely a criminal associate (black market) and dispense with the charade of ‘we strengthened gun control to keep the public safe’

  Taipan: Mate you’re dreaming…Tribal Labour MP’s would never change their minds.
  
  When I did my submission opposing the repeal of the 3S law I said, in my oral submission, “Jesus Christ himself could appear before you and tell you repeal was a terrible idea – and you would still do it.”
  
  For Jesus Christ substitute a Labour icon like Clark – or the ghost of Mickey Savage – and the result would still be the same.

When Home Detention was originally introduced in 1999, it was intended to be used:

* for non-violent offenders, and
* as an option at the end of a sentence, to assist with the reintegration of the inmate to the community.

Somewhere along the line, the use of Home D has undergone a paradigm shift, and it is now used as an alternative to a prison sentence. It was staggering to see figures on the number of people who have been sentenced to Home Detention multiple times.

Perhaps it’s time for National and Act to agree that there is a limit to the number of times you can receive a sentence of Home D.

  Tony S: The whole sentencing regime needs radical reform, root and branch. For a start, the Sentencing Act – now gutted of three strikes – ought to be repealed and very different legislation passed to replace it .
  
  Sadly that is very unlikely to happen, even if there was an NACT government with a huge majority. Essentially, Luxon believes the “criminals are victims too” bullshit, and Seymour doesn’t know enough about criminology to push him on it.
  
  I will say that the ACT Laura Norder person – Nicole McKee I think – is very sound….but then she is just one voice in a caucus of 10, soon to be 20.

        Hi, David. When I’m out and about, I sometimes access Kiwiblog on my smart phone, just to follow the comments. (I haven’t got around to signing up, so I can’t post comments when away from home, but I don’t need to be able to do that in any event. Besides, I like to draft my comments in Word, before posting them.)
        
        I clicked on the link to DPF’s article on my phone and the entire article was right there, in front of me. Why it’s paywalled on Ghost’s phone is a mystery to me.
        
        I “need” to have e-mail on my phone, which I use all the time, both at home and when I’m out.

Mass shooting sounds so dramatic. As far as I can tell a poorly aimed load of birdshot into the Mai Mai across the pond would likely count as a “mass shooting”. Less people died and were injured in this recent mass shooting than in a bad car accident. I don’t understand what people who know nothing about guns find so scary about them.

  Being hunted by someone that wants you dead, and armed with a firearms, would be scary.
  To state the obvious.
  People die in car crashes, that is s truism, but you are not being hunted and it is not a personal vendetta seeking to snuff out your life.

Mass shooting?

The definitions I’ve heard of require 4 or more victims (dead or wounded) excluding the shooter.

Perhaps NZ scales the definition according to population?
