Labour’s finance spokesperson Grant Robertson says “it’s not going to be possible to make big promises” this election and suggested the global economy is “starting to deteriorate further”.

So how does Labour respond? They make the Mother of All Election Promises with an initial cost of $45 billion. If the Airport Light Rail project is any guide, initially costed at $3 billion by now estimated at $26 billion, this one could run into several hundred billion dollars.

So for Hipkins to have made this announcement so soon after Robertson’s declaration that big promises are off the agenda, is there now open warfare between the PM and his Finance Minister?

I note that over the weekend Robertson also commented that he is running for the job of Finance Minister only in October. Does that mean he’ll be gone the moment the votes are counted and Labour is relegated to the Opposition benches? It’s hardly a ringing endorsement of Hipkins and Labour…

    Why should south islanders have to pay for Aucklands tunnels? The only reason one would go near to Auckland is because it has the main international airport. So you can travel to interesting cities. Where the road signs are in English. Has real history, and you dont have to wear a flak jacket to walk up the main street.

  I think it would be extremely naive to believe that Robertson hasn’t padded his nest (beyond the normal padding MPs and ministers get).
  
  There have been many companies that have benefited hugely from the sloshing of Labour’s buckets of money. Quite likely one, or more, of them will find the need for a new board member.

    The multi billion 5 waters fraud and the murderous covid response eclipse any previous NZ MP self enrichment scheme.
    
    FIXES
    – comprehensive MP conflicts policy with regular external review/oversight.
    – Criminal consequences for conflicts
    – regular independent auditing and reporting of public spending, including actual versus business case.
    – citizens referenda for policies not costed / outlined in the election campaign and for policies where actuala exceed budgets.
    -random audits of MPS and their family, especially where unexplained wealth is revealed (helen clark and the late michael cullen are 2 prime candidates).
    
    I realize each of these policies are difficult and cost money, but it is nothing compared to the Labour Party’s creation of $140 billion national debt with no tangible benefits.

      The referenda need to be binding, every single prior CIR was rejected, even with support over 80%.

      It takes substantial time, money and effort to get the required numbers to have a CIR accepted. They need to be binding or they need to be ditched.

        I agree the referenda need to be binding.
        
        The Marijuana and end of life referenda are excellent examples of the wisdom of the electorate crowd:
        – rejecting idiotic legislation nakedly supported by dishonest mps (chloe) and the despicable media.
        – supporting common sense end of life choices for those in severe discomfort.
        
        It is time for:
        – a climate change response referendum,
        – a TOW referendum,
        – a referendum demanding a full investigation into the covid response including an explanation how Bloomfield / Adern / Hipkins got hold of the first deadly covid batches (despite being very late joining the jab queue) then injected the deadly batches into the arms of our medical staff after the deadly and unacceptable risks were known and reported by Pfizer.

        I talked to my wife about possible actions post the election (those of you who previously kindly expressed concern about my marital status….im still hanging in there) including championing a national referendum on citizens referenda and a covid audit / investigaton.
        
        If the referendum is successful, the hard work starts.

  There is absolutely no reason for a harbour crossing to cost 45 billion apart from the incompetence of the Labour Party.
  The incoming government should scrap those plans immediately and come up with a realistic plan, starting with National’s previous road only plan which cost around the 5 billion mark, so maybe 6 now adjusted for inflation.

It was a Sunday after all and they had their B team on including the bar coded native newsreader who must be helping reduce the clicks for Newshub.     I can see some being sucked in by the thought of free dental, many are in varying degrees of misery because they can’t afford proper dental care. But there aren’t enough dentists in the country as it is without some idiotic idea of dentists in buses visiting every suburb.
    
    However, anyone being sucked in re the tunnel/bridge nonsense needs their bumps read. One word. Kiwibuild.

      Whilst dental work is expensive. I like that I can make an appointment and be seen generally very quickly. If we had public dentistry imagine the wait times, needing a filling and haveing to wait 4 mths for your appointment to be seen and then another few weeks for the actual work.
      
      For some the service would be better, as they could get work done they previously couldn’t afford, but for everyone else the system would be unimaginably worse.

        The UK NHS dental service offered good payments for foreign dentists to help out. They would get paid per filling which of course was open to abuse. The said dentists would essentially gouge a furrow through several adjacent teeth and fill and charge per tooth. This was nicknamed “the London Bridge” and the said dentists made good money.

      I met some of the mandated police officers first day there. One of them features in that trailer.
      
      It was a pleasure to shake his hand that day, and the hands of his colleagues sitting on the steps of parliament. A genuine pleasure, as opposed to looking up at the media and politicians peeking out from the balcony and from behind the curtains in the main building. Like modern day Marie Antoinettes.

  Loved it. David Seymour refused to react to Shepherd’s attempts to drive the conversation his way. It was also refreshing that Seymour didn’t in any way seem constrained by other media trainers’ advice. Too often what is said by politicians is pussyfooting around what they really should/want to say. He said what he wanted to say, clearly and got his point across.

    And the third – listen to what they say before you ask your next question. Shepherd was cutting Seymour off with his next brilliant gotcha question, delivered breathlessly.

  Damn, David is good. On point, clear, rational and actual addresses the points and attempted ‘gotchas’.
  Principled, and he is not ashamed or squirming about anything he says.
  The interviewer is trying to nail David, but I think David will be winning over any middle-ground type person watching this.
  And that is the point. You dont have to be all things to all people. You have to be coherent and demonstrate reason.

    I also went to David’s meeting in Nelson yesterday and again he was excellent. He just might be the person to put the Treaty back in its file where it should have long stayed as it is NOT our founding document. Queen Victoria’s Royal Charter/ Letters Patent dated 16 November 1840 is our true founding document which annexed us from NSW,
    and made NZ into a British Colony with a Government and Constitution that set up NZ’s Political, Legal and Justice systems under one flag and one law, irrespective o race, colour or creed.. If we could bring it forth, that would kill the Treaty once and for all. So much is being teased out of it that was never ever intended. The rest of the Politicians are more interested in their own re-election than the truth. They are cowards but David is just so cool, calm and collected and so on point about everything. Having been hounded (unsuccessfully but still a year of stress) by these people myself I know who they target – elderly white males seem to be the main target.   Glad to see a suggestion that the charity might be de-registered, and that they are also looking at the Maori Party election launch that was also hosted/bankrolled by the Trust. Apparently ‘complaints received’ and even academics coming out and saying it is clear-cut misuse.
  All adds up to them hopefully not getting away with it, and increasingly being under a lens.
  Corruption: cynically using a charitable trust as a piggy bank.
  Another hint around why we don’t need ‘te ao Maori’ or any separate systems or legal values in NZ.

To me this really shows the ugly side of New Zealand right now. We are run by ex-student activists and many New Zealanders act like student activists. We don’t listen to any other opinion, we don’t want to win over hearts and minds, we are going to use force and abuse to get our way.

Unfortunately the forces of law and order and government at the moment are in league with the student activist mindset. So essentially we have people who are radicals running the show. The lunatics are running the asylum.

We need proper debate about co-governance. It was stealthily introduced by the Labour government who never admitted to it until found out. No one has ever voted for it because it has never been on the ballot.

Make no mistake. This election is about a lot of things. But one of those primary things, one of the most important things, is do we want co-governance? Do we want separate Maori health providers, Maori tribes having control of the water, Maori representation on all city councils, whether elected or not? Do we want the vote of the 15% of people who identify as Maori to be worth five times the vote of everybody else?

As for me I am voting for democracy and one person one vote. Regardless of race.

  This is not right, Stop Co Governance is a legitimate organisation and there is a geat and growing public appetite for its message. Police should be protecting the meetings, not acting in the interests of disruptive, mainly Maori activist protesters. Siding with the protesters as outlined by Mr Batchelor above, is terrible. I expect police to uphold the law, not support Maori radical protesters preventing a meeting from being held.

  I can solve two problems with one policy:
  Teenagers wanting cosmetic genital surgery can get it on the public system.
  They go on the queue and by the time they get an appointment (3 – 4 years) they have grown up don’t need it any more.

I was reading over the weekend about people under the age of 25 getting a lower rate of Jobseeker Benefit.

But the standout point for me was that there are nearly 34,000 of them in NZ.

How can that possibly be tolerated? There is plenty of work and presumably the 34,000 are not sick or disabled, because otherwise they would be on a different type of benefit.

And how can it be in the interests of the individuals themselves, their families, their communities and their country for them to be idle?

They really need to be told that there are no benefits for them and that they need to move to where jobs are available (i.e., pretty well anywhere in NZ).

  Actually the Job Seeker benefit DOES include people with disabilities even the girl featured doing the bitching has disabilities and can only work part time. Perhaps a split personality as one side of her head was blonde and the other brunette most likely leading many bad hair days. Hadn’t noticed that Meng Foon, the former Race Relations Commissioner, is a director of NZ’s biggest agricultural services company, PGG Wrightson.

The appointment was before Foon left his race job, and probably then was seen as just a sidelight in a social justice warrior’s career. Yet this is an important company in the agricultural export businesses that keep New Zealand economically viable.

Foon joined the PPG Wrightson board on 29 June 2022, a year before he resigned his race relations post after failing to declare payments of $2 million he took for emergency housing while director of an investment company.

PGG Wrightson is 44.33 per cent owned by Agria (Singapore), and 11.96 per cent by Elders Australia.

Four weeks ago, PGG Wrightson’s chairman, Joo Hai Lee, of Penang, Malaysia, announced he was stepping down from the company’s board and its audit committee. He said this was “to eliminate the ongoing distraction caused due to media and market attention regarding the securities regulation matters that he is defending in Singapore”.

The Straits Times, of Singapore, reported last year that Joo Hai Lee was a director, between 2011 and 2018, of Hyflux, a Singapore water-treatment firm that diversified into energy.

Six people related to Hyflux have been charged under Singapore’s Securities and Futures Act.

In 2021, Hyflux was ordered to be wound up, with likely total loss of about 900 million Singapore dollars (about $NZ1.1 billion) for about 34,000 holders of its perpetual securities and preference shares.

In 2019, the High Court of NZ fined PGG Wrightson’s key shareholder, the Singapore-based Agria Corporation, $220,000 for breaching its requirement to be of “good character” in relation to its controlling stake in the Christchurch-based agriculture company.

The court also ordered Agria to sell down its stake in PGG Wrightson from 50.2 per cent interest in PGG Wrightson to 46.5 per cent.

In 2018, America’s Securities and Exchange Commission found Agria cuilty of fraudulent accounting. The SEC summarised:

“Agria violated the anti-fraud, reporting, books and records, and internal accounting control provisions of the federal securities laws. Between 2010 and 2013, Agria engaged in a course of fraudulent accounting related to its July 2010 divestiture of Taiyuan Primalights III Modernized Agriculture Development Co., Ltd. (‘P3A’), a consolidated affiliated entity. Agria materially overstated the value of the consideration it received in the transaction and concealed material losses as a result of the divestiture.”

NZ’s traditional farmer-owned co-ops were looked down on by sharp financial folk, yet some foreign co-ops have done very well, and done well in NZ. For example, Dutch Rabobank, which is active in NZ banking and finance, and the German farm co-operative which is a leader in introducing robotics to NZ apple growing.

Last week there was a huge kerfuffel in South Africa about the EFF calling for the the killing of Boers.

This was tested in court a few years back and was not deemed to be hate speech because, as EFF claimed, this was just singing the old “liberation song” of the 1970s/80s and in that “Boers” really stood for the whole apartheid system – not just individual white people.

So, the theory does, calling for the killing of Boers is calling for ending the remnants of apartheid and not actually going and killing farmers.

To an extent I think this is correct. When I lived in Cape Town (1980-83, 1988-1992) we called the police “the boere”. This was a commonly used term by many people – especially English speakers of more liberal persuasion and the Coloured people.

But this is now almost 30 years since 1994. I doubt very much that the police or “the system” in general is still refered to as boere.

On the flip side of this is the argument that “boer” means “white people”. Nope, it does not. It more specifically means Afrikaners.

In Xhosa (the language used in the ANC song – before being translated into English), the word that is used in Amabulu (= boers). That is distinct to the word that is used for white people in general – Abelungu”.

Further, if one looks back to things like the old graffiti in Soweto schools “Disarm the police and kill the boers”, clearly the police and boers are distinct other wise they’d have said disarm the boers and kill whites” or some such.

But, whatever, EFF’s Malema is the only good orator in South Africa at the moment. SA has over 40% unemployed and over 60% unemployed amongst the younger generation. With numbers like that he can potentially sweep to power if he can motivate his voters.

    At other times Malema has wished violence on all white people and has a particular dislike of Indians, so it isn’t just the boers in isolation.
    
    You are quite correct that if the knives come out then nobody is going to do a language test or ask who your father is. All whites are going to be treated the same – even if they were ANC supporters during apartheid.
    
    And it’s not just a race thing either but also an economic thing. Whites are seen to be rich whether they are or not. When those 60% of unemployed younger people decide they want a cut of their entitlement they are not going to look for it in shanty town.
    
    If it does come down to a civil war then it won’t just be race vs race, but also tribe vs tribe.

    I don’t think it matters whether his parents were Zimbabwean or not. Bottom line is that, like him or not, he’s a bloody good orator and has latched onto some issues that some very desperate people are passionate about.
    
    The 60% unemployed youth and youth adjacent are keen for something and the offers of free stuff are rather appealing.
    
    At the same time, the ANC voters are finding less and less to support so either switch to other parties or won’t be bothered to vote.
    
    For a country that pushed so hard for one man one vote, the voter turn out isn’t that high and is likely to be far lower in the 2024 election.
    
    He’s a Pan Africanist. Many of the younger generation support the one-Africa idea, but even more just want the free stuff.

        Yes he certainly is dangerous. But ultimately he’s not really stoking the division as just providing a way for people to direct their current anger/frustrations.
        
        I know everyone rolls their eyes when you talk of Hitler, but in this case the comparison is warranted. Both were excellent speakers and managed to get huge support form the disaffected.
        
        It would be naive to say that Hitler caused Germans to go Nazi. Nope, they were ready to do so. They had many things to be grumpy about. What Hitler provided was the mechanism by which they could come together and a direction in which to move.

    And four G the giant from Dunedin, I understand the cars and trucks go in a couple of the submerged tunnels, freeing up a lane on the existing bridge. Actually cars in tunnels it’s quite a novel idea since you just suck out and pro-serious the carbon fumes, although I’m not quite sure what you do about the afixie-eighted drivers and passengers.

      No idea why it is being kept secret – that is odd. Never heard of archaeology being kept secret whether it is right or wrong. It’s quite possible that some polynesians arrived earlier and didn’t survive and/or left, or did survive in small numbers before the main arrivals.   That site is sad.
  The ‘ancient stone walls’ are rough rock pilings. There is no lost civilisation here. Many people have snuck in there and took pictures. Then only dumb thing was the regional archaeologists agreeing to an embargo on carbon dating with local iwi – they should not have done that, and this is something I was told by a proffesional inside the system who was disapointed with that fact. It was just a dumb pandering to dumb local Maori and does not mean there is a massive secret to be revealed at all.
  Stone piles and rows next to gardens, when soil was volcanic like that, are normally around Maori sites.
  You have to remove the rocks to garden the rich soil there, and what is the obvious thing? Pile them, or maybe lay in rows.
  Even Cook commented on, and his artists sketched, their tidy gardens and alignments.
  I can suggest a couple of sites to view similar stone walls next to archaeological kumara and taro fields.
  Then is no comparison to meso-american or other true ‘lost’ cities under jungles. These are not massive stones, or even worked stones ….they are piles of natural rocks.
  Even the ‘ancient stone adzes’ shown on the site are laughable unmodified stones.
  I collect artefacts, including stone adzes from NZ and overseas archaeological sites. I have picked up artefacts from sites in NZ, flaked and polished. Those ‘ancient adzes’ are NOT artefacts of even the crudest sort.

It was about 13 weeks ago, early May, that I was chatting with an accountant whose firm employs 100+ and a businessman who has about 130 staff;
They were both concerned with the upcoming tax take for the government. “Nobody’s got any tax to pay.” was their refrain.
I think the Treasury’s economic predictions are terribly way off line.
With financial forecasts like the government is getting, competent management of the economy is a hopeless task.

They have spent 6 years telling us petrol is bad, cars are naughty, Motorways are mostly evil, climate change emergency is blah blah blah and then yesterday this.

  Building the current bridge in the late 1950s cost approx $250M in today’s money. Let’s double that for the clip-ons. $500M.
  
  So how could costs have gone up 70x more than inflation?
  
  A loaf of bread was 8d (about 7 cents) in 1959. About $1.40 in today’s money and around $4 on the shelves – so only about 3x inflation.
  
  Some things like sugar are cheaper than inflation.
  
  Wages are about at inflation, and fuel etc is probably similar-ish (within 5x inflation).
  
  So why does Chippy’s Folley have to cost us 70x inflation?

Note, the link is paywalled, but in summary Stuff is looking to cut more jobs – after recently laying off about 16 people in its print production team, and following the exit of various senior staffers and several high-profile reporters. And the union, unsurprisingly, isn’t happy, accusing Stuff presenting an “illogical” proposal impacting 28 roles, and claiming it will “drastically undermine” the “quality journalism” (*cough* *cough*) the company is trying to promote.

There’s more details in the article, with the union accusing the company of treating its staff pretty shabbily.

I personally detest Stuff, considering them to be utterly untrustworthy when it comes to actually reporting on the important issues facing us without bias or prejudice. I cannot trust them to examine all sides of an issue, or present inconvenient facts that go against their preferred narrative. Their constant crusading, championing of “causes” and forceful pushing of agendas has utterly destroyed any credibility they might once have had.

As far as I’m concerned, the demise of Stuff can’t come soon enough.

    I don’t think anyone here is suggesting that all or most Maori are criminals.
    
    However one must accept the truth – that there is more offending amongst Maori. Why that is is up for debate.
    
    Police arresting more Maori and judges putting them in jail is not racism. It is just a result of the underlying criminality.

      What gets me is that just about every Maori man who ends up in court charged with bashing and killing someone , whether that be man, woman or child, says that their actions were due to their terrible, violent, deprived upbringing.
      And everyone just accepts that as some sort of normal – no questions asked.
      When is some defence lawyer or judge going to get these family members, who made the murderer do what they did, to appear in their court to account for their actions?
      Murderers and others with a violent temper use their upbringing to earn sympathy and a reduced sentence. Let’s hear what their families have to say.

        Well it certainly isn’t the lawyer’s job to play social worker – just to get the crim off. And the judge does not have any jurisdiction over anyone except the person on trial. So you’re barking up the wrong tree there.
        
        But I agree with your general sentiments: If the person is blaming their upbringing then let’s start holding people’s feet to the fire for being shitty parents and raising criminal kids.
        
        Of course that won’t work either because they, in turn, will just blame those that raised them (or colonialism/whatever).
        
        Ultimately this will not stop until people take responsibility for their own actions. They don’t blame their parents or grandparents. They don’t blame colonialism etc. They don’t blame drugs. They take responsibility.

    Ghost, you are right, it is wrong to blame a whole group of people for the actions of one. But I would hope you know me well enough by now to know that I wouldn’t do that – and I haven’t tried to do that here today.
    
    I will say however that Maori violence is out of all proportion to their numbers in NZ and as compared to other racial groups. Saying ‘what about’ doesn’t change that nor does it get us any closer to identifying the underlying causes.
    
    I say again, there is a deep sickness IN SOME PARTS of Maoridom and I fear we are just not getting to grips with it.
    
    I’m also today, again, poking at the prevailing orthodoxy that is ‘everything Maori is wonderful’ when it clearly is not. Far from it. And the idea that of we ‘decolonise’ everything and create new Maori-centric structures, organisations and strategies all will become great is a fool’s paradise.
    
    I fear we will merely throw the baby out with the bathwater – and all of us will be worse off except for those who stood to financially gain from the whole and great deceit.

I remember when

High Court rules girl is Maori:
The child, referred to as “C” in a judgment from the court- is of Maori, Australian Abroriginal and NZ European descent.
C’s father, who is of Scottish descent, does not consider the tamariki to be Maori, identifying her instead as NZ European and Australian Aboriginal.
C’s mother, has previously signed an affidavit acknowledging her own Maori whakapapa.

Obviously, the court is partly right!

  Back in the day, some Catholic-Protestant marriages entailed agreements about which religion children would be raised in should there be a divorce.
  
  This goes further. The court seems to be ruling that in a dispute over children, Maori part of mixed descent gets priority over non-Maori part.
  
  So we get racist decisions as well as Woke sentences, where those who break information publishing rules get stiffer sentences than those who bash and stab people.
  
  Or is this all from Maori fears about identity as races continue to intermarry?

She was telling me how upset residents out there were with the fast-tracking of a 58 unit development that had obtained consent without consultation with any of the affected parties living nearby…..

I didn’t mean to add fuel to the fire, but you should have seen the look on her face when I mentioned the ‘Te Matawai Apartments’ in Greys Ave…. where Kaianga-Ora had bought 75% of the building for social housing.

Anyway, lets hope it’s not too late for them to lodge objections against this blot on the landscape. Only half of them will even have a carpark. Let alone the added stress on the old infrastructure!

and the clyde is the biggest generator (hydro), I believe.
It would appear, that he means a wind turbine in EVERYONE’S back yard.

  Sigh, somebody needs to learn the difference between power and energy.
  400MW isn’t an amount of energy.
  
  The turbines may generate ~400MW from time to time, but that alone isn’t enough to save 150 million kilograms of CO2. They would need to generate that power for some period of time to save that CO2 from being emitted.
  Presumably they are trying to say that the turbines would replace coal-fired generation, and I guess they’re talking about the amount of CO2 emitted by the coal station over some period of time.
  
  The story was so crap I couldn’t actually figure out what they were actually trying to say.
  
  Google tells me that a coal-fired station typically emits ~1kg of CO2/kWh, so if generating 400MW would emit 400,000 kg/hr, or 9,600,000 kg/day. At this rate it would take 15.6 days to emit 150,000,000 kg, and would have generated 150,000MWh of electricity.
  Turbines generally operate at somewhere between 20-30% capacity on average, so these new ones could be expected to generate something like 80-120MW on average.
  I guess that they’ll eventually save that amount of CO2 emissions, but certainly not when the wind isn’t blowing.
