    Ghost, are you basing that comment on what you know from participating in a campaign or what you are seeing/hearing in the media?
    
    Because each is giving the potential for very different outcomes. The ultimate litmus test is go to Wellington and get a taxi ride between the airport & the city and talk to the taxi driver. I can assure you, that is the most accurate way to gauge what is happening.

    Agree, there is no way they’ll be as low as < 20%, but I don't think between 25 and 27.5% is unrealistic.

    National 42.6%
    ACT 13.2%
    Labour 26.8%
    Green 10.2%
    NZF 3.7% and no electorate
    TPM 2.6% and no electorate

      There is, but it is now rather small. An election defeat will be hard for Labour as they will lose all the funds that go to having electorate offices around which to build branch parties. It is very hard, when you don’t have state money, and backers with deep pockets.

    I regret looking at a Facebook friends facebook discussion on how they plan to vote, and a lot of middle aged women saying amongst other things that ‘National and ACT will make inequality worse’ (..as in we should all share poverty I guess), and that “changing a government will not help things, even though they are going bad, a new government can’t do better”, that we are ‘doing very well compared to other countries’ (….this is what I call a low-information voter!), and that from a person inside the heath sector, that “Covid could have gone so much worse” (….the lingering effect of Saint Jacinda for Labour).
    
    As I rapidly scroll past the many comments, of this cluster of women all for Labour, my heart sank.
    I know that this is the demographic that support Labour no matter what, but depressing to see I am not many degrees removed from them.
    
    Also made me consider that the days where only men and specifically those that owned property were entitled to vote – that is not perhaps ‘enlightened’ but it has a certain appeal just now.
    Instead, I wonder if there should be some sort of test before people should be able to be part of selecting a government that we all have to endure – articulate a policy of the party you support and their opposition, or state a current metric around health or justice.
    
    Labour has to be obliterated in this election, and there are still too many welded-on supporters (gangs and leeches) and touchy-feely people out there that think than Nats and ACT are big old rick-prick meanies.
    We need adults in charge, in more ways than one.

  I regard all politicians as being useful in the same way that toilet facilities are; you use them and move on. Boris was useful for winning an election and thereby executing Brexit. But that’s it. He has the same depth of belief in civil liberties and freedom that Jacinda Ardern, Joe Biden, Dan Andrews, and a host of others have. That is to say, freedom for them and their friends, not us.

    They are propaganda efforts designed to favour a political party during an election campaign.
    Remember when the Green Party’s Elisabeth Kerekere allegedly called another member of her group a cry baby. That was deemed as unacceptable and she moved on.

        The Law Society has many of the aspects of a (trade) union. So do Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and the NZ Police Association.
        
        If you are going to ban unions, these will have to go, along with the NZ Medical Association and many other groups.
        
        Co-operatives have some characteristics of employee unions, so maybe Fonterra would be in line for the axe, too.

I had a revelation yesterday:

The worst Labour government ever is about to be followed by the worst National government ever.

And why is that? Well political parties don’t really decide their own destiny. They are really moulded by the environment they exist in: voters, international pressures, etc.

This is somewhat refelected in the Overton Window.
The political discourse moves with time and what is “left” or “right” moves because they stay within the window.

Take for example the EV subsidy stuff being discussed yesterday.

No longer is the concept of EV subsidies even up for debate/discussion or even the decarbonising behind it. Both major parties are in lock step that there should be subsidies.

The only haggle is how they should be subsidised – through direct EV subsidies or by subsidising infrastructure.

In this case the EV buyers get to have both: they got the EV direct subsidy under Labour, then they get the subsidised infrastructure under National – while the petroleum fuelled untermensch get to pay for them twice.

    There is nothing wrong with Nz moving sensibly to electric vehicles.
    
    We have the ability to generate more electricity and as technology progresses, reduce our reliance on imported petrol. Reducing the need for petrol will help address our disastrous balance of trade.
    
    Investing in infrastructure is vital to improve productivity and Labour cannot come in and reverse infrastructure.
    
    Thanks to Elon Musk Electric vehicles are much simpler and easier to produce than combustion engines, and major car manufacturers are moving to electric vehicles so it may not be too far in the future when combustion engines are much more expensive than electric.
    
    There are still challenges with batteries and the ability to tow but there is also a lot of money and experts directed at solving the problem.
    
    So the National government rolling out electric vehicle infrastructure makes sense without considering the climate fraud.
    
    The international climate action story, will help our reputation and exporters.

        @CMM; You can’t really argue that Tesla haven’t been responsible for bringing EV price down and performance up to competitive levels with IC cars, with other manufacturers being forced to play catch-up and make big loses as they try to compete. Tesla have big fat margins that other large manufacturers can only dream of and their manufacturing costs are already competitive with IC cars.
        
        And with 3 more doublings in volume still to happen with EVs (currently ~10% of global car production) manufacturing cost of EVs will likely drop another 30-40% while IC engined cars will start to increase in cost as their volumes decline. Batteries in particular are likely to halve in cost using tech like Sodium ion from CATL and learning curves from steadily increasing manufacturing volumes.

        Musk and Tesla have made EVs more ubiquitous, but it would be a stretch to claim that they should be called out as the enablers of modern EVs. Musk certainly isn’t the Henry Ford of EVs.
        
        The technical stuff in EVs comes down to 3 major technologies – none of which Tesla/Musk created:
        * cheap and reliable power electronics
        * improved batteries
        * electric motors.
        
        Musk does have a bit of a reality distortion field around him – very much like Steve Jobs.
        
        Both of these individuals have created a cult following that paints them as visionaries who have broken down technical walls.
        
        The reality of their inventions does not match up to the hype.

      So why do they cost so much?
      
      As I have commented many times, for most people, buying an EV is stupid. You can buy a highly efficient hybrid vehicle for about half the cost of an equivalent size EV. A hybrid Toyota Yarris gets 1000 km per tank of fuel, for someone with typical driving behaviour.
      
      You are vastly over stating the intentions of car builders. Toyota is massively investing in a new generation of hybrid vehicles.

        This is correct, but infrastructure to support plug-in hybrids is not a terrible idea because prices will reduce as the technology improves and oil prices will keep going up.
        
        However it should be user pays. If you put a price on carbon and also subsidise electric then petrol car users have to pay twice which is unfair even if the National/leftist environmental assertions are true.

  The intention is that the bulk of the installation cost will be borne by the private sector in a Chorus type rollout of broadband, which had a 50% subsidy.
  
  Chris Luxon may not be to your taste, but there surely can be no doubt he is a highly competent corporate manager. Expect those are skills to be the fore in running government. I have no doubt that he will run a highly efficient government that is very focussed in achieving the targets it sets. He has the track record in doing just that.
  
  Yes, he is more liberal than most kiwibloggers, but that would also be true of about 80% of New Zealanders generally.
  
  I appreciate the most regular posters here are basically Act supporters, but that shouldn’t mean that people can’t discern competence where it exists. In any event Luxon will be the PM and National will have around three quarters of Cabinet positions. It will be imperative that National and Act respect each other if they are to succeed. And I speak as one who worked very closely with an Act Associate Minister (Heather Roy) when I was a Minister. I thought that we made a pretty good team.

    I only used the subsidies as one example. They in themselves do not make the worst Labour (or National) government ever.
    
    And, as I wrote, this is a natural consequence of the moving Overton Window. Cindy, Chippy and Luxon are only crap because that’s what the voting environment seem to want.
    
    It’s only a “relatively modest” subsidy because you’re taking it out of somebody else’s pocket and, as a politician, you feel the need to blow billions not mere millions on idealogical purposes.
    
    If this is a critical piece of infrastructure for EVs, and the EV-lovers are so committed to their cause then why can’t they pay?
    
    There are around 90,000 EVs and PHEVs in NZ (and growing). If each paid $700 a year then that would cover the $64M a year you find is trivial.
    
    Since you seem to think a Mercedes EV of $100k is a reasonable purchase, what’s the problem adding another $700 a year in operating expenses?
    
    A rich prick that can afford a $100k EV surely doesn’t need the South Auckland family with a second hand people mover paying for their smugness.
    
    Why does the government need to be involved here at all? The EV owners can get together and make an EV club that rolls out these stations (think along the lines of the Caravan clubs that have built caravan camping facilities through NZ).
    
    But no, it seems government always needs to dabble in stuff they could stay out of and make Joe Average pay for their idealogical goals.

        Even at those prices it’s going to be a challenge to make a filling station work.
        
        A petrol filling station has typically 8 to 12 bays (some bigger, some smaller) – let’s just say 10 bays.
        
        In 5 minutes you can process a customer completely: fill them up with $100 of petrol, sell them $20 of cokes and pies etc.. 12 of those per pump per hour.
        Total: $14400 of sales per hour at peak.
        
        At 75 cents/kWh a 120kW charger is going to sell $90 of electricity per hour and serve maybe 3 customers (each buying their $20 of coffee and pies) per hour. So $150 per charger per hour.
        Total sales for 10 chargers: $1500 per hour peak sales.
        
        That’s just not going to make an electric filling station business work.
        
        On top of that, charging takes so long that people need something to do for 20+ minutes.

I know why – don’t scare the horses – but surely we need to resolve some issues, the ToW in particular, but there are plenty of others or cold Fiji beckons. Boot camps will not make a difference or even work. Tax cuts are not sufficient by themselves.     People living in Wainui, Porirua, Otahuhu etc can’t afford electric vehicles even with a stonking subsidy, they often have large families and need reliable cheap vehicles to move the kids, get to sport and get to work.
    
    Its all well and good for people like you Wayne to buy an EV – you have the cash flow for it.
    
    But what pisses me off is taking tax off the poor (via petrol taxes, GST) and using that to subsidise wealthy people into EV’s .
    
    And if EV’s are such a game changer and the future there is zero need to subsidies an EV charging network. Z and other current fuel companies would roll the EV charging stations out if EV’s were the future – as it would leverage their current station footprints.. Why the hell cant governments get out of the way and let the market provide??
    
    What is wrong with National is exactly your style of manage it better while we slide every closer to a one party state attitude – where is the case for markets, individual effort and responsibility being made by the Blue socialists? The hint is its not hence why they are Blue socialists…

  Decarbonising has only one meaning: to remove carbon or carbonaceous deposits from (an engine or other metal object).
  
  Given that almost every element on earth contains carbon, it’s the 4th most-abundant element in the universe, and there are approximately 1.85 billion, billion tons of it in the earth’s crust, I’m at a loss to understand how anything or anyone can be “decarbonised”.
  
  We need to call out this egregious BS as soon as we see it, not just criticise the way it’s being done.

    It doesn’t matter if it was a pedestrian crossing. The law does not allow a pedestrian to jump in front of a rapidly approaching vehicle. She jumped out and stopped in the middle of the road.
    
    She is lucky she wasn’t killed.

    It appears she walked onto the crossing while a stream of traffic was passing over it. I thought you were supposed to stop and wait for the vehicles between you and the diamond to pass and for any vehicles after those to slow down and stop for you.

    From memory, the bikes arrived in a group, stopped at the pedestrian crossing while their leader (I suppose) did an interview with someone, then rode off.
    
    There were a lot of them and it took a while for them all to go. Looks like Marama stepped out as they were riding past. Pretty silly thing to do really.

‘Sensing Murder psychic Kelvin Cruickshank claims he is “pretty livid” and has had to cancel a series of shows in the South Island after a fellow medium allegedly placed a ban on shows being performed in the same city for six weeks either side of their performance.

In a video uploaded to Facebook, Cruickshank said he was “gutted, just gutted” to have cancelled his proposed tour dates for Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka, Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika.’

News out today that the Christchurch 24 Hour Medical Centre is reducing its hours and closing between 10pm and 8am due to staff shortages for the foreseeable future. Not a word from, Duncan Webb, Megan Woods, Tracey McLellan, Sarah Pallett or Poto Williams; all Labour MP’s in Christchurch electorates and all have gone missing on this issue.
Christchurch people need to remember this when they come to vote.

We all knew that Labour are desperate to retain power, and that this was going to be a dirty campaign. But the amount of dis-information, or the number of times they have spread lies so openly about what National would do I find staggering. It has clearly been done on purpose, and even though Hipkins ‘has a stern talking to’ his people afterwards, he knows the damage has been done. There needs to be consequences / punishments for lying about another party, isn’t that libel or slander?

        they had steel, for sure, as in worked blades where the amount of carbon mix to iron was based on hand forging (hammer to remove impurities): their control of the process would not compare to modern methods and understanding {science} though, and the earliest iron/steel blades are not superior to the best bronze.
        Low carbon steel – wrought iron/flexible, might have more carbon introduced to create mid-carbon steel, which is a compromise for weapons; high carbon being hard, but brittle.
        
        Iron and steel (iron plus carbon) is a spectrum when talking of ancient technologies.
        In the West, it was primarily hand working (including work hardening of bronze, and shaping) and then there was casting of iron (high carbon steel) in Ancient China – for tools and initial blanks, but Chinese never had work hardened bronze due to using lead in their casting technology.
        
        Here is a paper on steel (clarifying low-mid-high carbon) working in ancient Rome and Greece.

        FYI – I collect ancient weapons and militari.   When one of my teeth collapsed this week, my visit to the dentist (a very good one, I should say) cost $137 for an X-ray and consultation about possible treatments. More extensive examination in a couple of weeks will cost around $250 for a more complex X-ray by a very costly machine. And then we start adding the zeros, because indications are that several other adjacent teeth are in trouble.
  
  My dentist is hot under the collar re Labour suggestions of making treatment free for a growing cohort. The government will not be able to afford the repairs for increasingly complex problems that under-30s are presenting. He pointed out that dentistry is not like doctors. Modern dental equipment costs into the millions of dollars (another dentist told me some years ago that the chair alone costs more than a half million). Medical practices are not faced with massive setup costs like this. If the government mandates what effectively will be treatment caps, the dentists will be funding a high proportion of the costs out of their own pockets. Actually, they won’t. They’ll close. Move to Australia. Or whatever. But the upshot will be that the government move will actually reduce treatment availabilities.

Barrister Christopher Stevenson wrote to several outlets this week, saying that references to police dogs tracking Allan were inaccurate and defamatory. She reserved her legal rights, with the letter giving a deadline to correct the reporting.

    I have never found The Rolling Stones to be particularly noteworthy. The Beatles mixed in more quality content before 1970 than they have done over all their decades, in terms on variety of songwriting and pioneering musical techniques or styles. 3 genuinely prolific and talented song writers in there (and then there’s Ringo!). One of the Stones earliest hits was gifted by the Beatles/written by them.
    Music from The Doors, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and others personally just interests me much more. And I was not a child, or even alive in the 1960’s.
    
    But music is pretty subjective, and a matter of personal taste.
    
    The latest song I heard from the Stones on ZB today sounded OK to me, and better than many from their younger selves. So pretty good in that sense, being not to many people are releasing new original content in their 80s.
    Shame Jimi and Jim and John didn’t make it.

      I tend to agree. The Beatles were far superior to the Stones in terms of songwriting, notwithstanding that the Stones did some great work, particularly with Mick Taylor (particularly the albums Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! (live) Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet).
      
      Taylor famously commented that he didn’t understand what all the fuss was about when he first auditioned for the Stones. He was far and way the most accomplished musician to play with the Stones.
      
      The 1971 live version of Dead Flowers is a great example of his abilities.

    They can’t handle the fact they have been duped to a an unprecedented level. I know you were a huge ‘believer’ at the beginning of covid. It must have been difficult for you to realise you were badly wrong. It happened to many people.
    
    There is over 14% excess all cause mortality in NZ that correlates perfectly with the rollout of the jab. There is a massive reduction in live births. There is a 38% increase in registered disabilities that correlates with the jab rollout.
    
    This is all pure coincidence clearly…../s

  Partner got roped in by that at Ali Moana Mall, Waikiki Beach. Makeup products – good stuff, not Warehouse shit. Very persuasive but she wanted some anyway US$400 odd. We had this thing to talk about some of the things we would come across. Thought was we may not pass this way again. A lot of stuff. US$700 in postage from Hawaii and Alaska. All sortd of touristy things. I bought about 30 teeshirts.
  Anyway, 2 years later we were back at that same mall, and hear a guy calling out “I know you, I know you” and started the same sales pitch. I intervened and said no, but he carried on to the point where I said “No more, just fuck off, and I won’t tell you again” He went away.
  I guess Mark’s girlfriend learnt a lesson and will remember it if a similar situation arises.

Sorry all the polls are wrong. Spoke today to local oracle’s the mechanic and the hairdresser. This info comes from under the bonnet and hairdryer how more genuine can you get.
People don’t have a f….clue who they will vote for or even bother to vote. Its a plague on all parties and politicians. Granted this is Nortland but under that bonnet and hairdryer is the old smiling rascal.

Does anyone know where labour buy their money trees from? Might plant one . If it is going to cost $81 million I’m sure if we double or triple it we still won’t get to the actual cost.

If re-elected to Government the Labour Party will introduce household rebates for energy-efficient homes, costing $81.6 million over three years.

On Friday, Labour Spokesperson for Building and Construction and Energy and Resources Megan Woods announced the multi-million-dollar rebate policy, which she says will decrease energy demands and “therefore emissions”.

The three-year rebate pilot will include:
Rebates of up to $18,000 for deep retrofit of an existing home
Up to $7000 for partial retrofits like double glazing and insulation
Up to $3000 for households who move off gas and electrify

Enough of all the politics. Lots of sport on but one contest that has attracted no attention is the New Zealand A vs Australia A cricket series in Australia. I am keen on cricket but had no idea this was happening until flicking through channels on Sky a couple of days ago. NZ A won both 4 day games with a very good win in the second game last night. Will O’Rourke who is apparently playing for Canterbury having been born in the UK and grew up in Auckland looks a great fast bowling prospect. Just 22, 1 metre 97 and very strong. Never heard of him. Who knew?

  Have been watching this. Great effort by Sky to show it. They could have been forgiven for telling NZ Cricket to ‘stick it’ after being shoved aside for the ill-fated Spark Sport.
  Best thing of all is the absence of Scott Stevenson as senior screamer.
