“What I do think is very important is that the emissions trading scheme be allowed to work and that means when polluters are asked to pay a price for pollution they pay that price and the govt doesn’t turn around and cut them a cheque. Why are we cutting cheques to big polluters when NZers need tax relief? Ask the polluters to de-carbonise.”

Nicola Willis in last night’s finance debate idiotically called CO2 “pollution” when it is the gas of life and without it all the planet would die. She wants to penalise enterprises who produce CO2 by means of the carbon trading scheme.

Who does Ms Willis think will pay the true cost of this in the end? If the price of “carbon” is increased, then everything will be far more costly to the “hard working taxpayers” she professes to care about. Petrol for example will double in price from its already ridiculously unreal cost.

Ruining the economic base of the country for the sake of a politicised myth. Every dollar spent on reducing CO2 emission is a dollar wasted and will ratchet down NZ’s already unacceptably low productivity rates.

Nobody capable of rational thought calls CO2 “pollution”. It is a propaganda term and a lie. The National Party is no longer the National party. It has been completely infiltrated and taken over by the Green Left.

    As with most things in life, you need to think a bit deeper to understand the whys and wherefors.
    
    Global Boiling is a scam but International customers punishing NZ for not playing our part in the scam is very real.
    
    Luxon and National are playing a very clever game with climate change by using it to achieve their objectives without bankrupting NZ….
    
    Allowing farmers TO include wetland carbon sequestration in their co2 calculation (NZ farms are carbon sinks, it is Labours skewing of the equation which allows the detractors to claim otherwise).
    
    Increasing renewable electricity generation.
    
    Preparing for the inevitable conversion to electric vehicles.
    
    Allowing farmers to access higher yield lower carbon GE pasture.
    
    Luxons suggestion NZ includes carbon sequestration in our surrounding oceans in our c02 calculations.
    
    Paying the ETS money back to NZ families.

      Which customers/markets specifically?
      – China – No
      – USA – No
      – Aust – No
      – India – No
      – EU – Yes threatening it but they now buy bugger all anyway and in 5 yrs they won’t be a big part of our export markets
      
      ACT Climate stance is at least a bit more honest. Set ETS CO2 targets at the same level as our trading partners (China!!), and return all revenues back as a tax credit.

        Lower ETS emissions (whatever level you set) cost money.

      If farmers included their products in the captured carbon this would be scientifically accurate and would make farming carbon capturing.
      Fats, proteins and carbs (ie food grown on farms) are packed with carbon captured from CO2 in the atmosphere. So too are secondary outputs like bones, hides and pea straw.
      That is then exported or whatever.
      Farmers should be getting carbon credits – not hounded.

The climate grift complex and the media just kept beating the drum that the nasty conservatives weren’t doing enough about the (made up) “climate emergency”!!   Nationally completely onboard with both Covidmania and the climate change project, two limbs of the same tree and neither supported by any evidence demonstrating the “need” to “act” to address these pseudo-issues. They also basically accept that Maori must be “partners” with the rest of us, it’s just the details they disagree on. And for some reason, a lot of KBers are gagging to have these clowns in government. Perhaps they’d be better than the current lot, but not on any of the deeply consequential issues that really matter.

  Most people buy into the climate scam because they only read the press releases and not the original documents being put out by groups like IPCC. The POC-26 report has a paragraph that explicitly states “there is no statistical evidence of increased intensity or frequency of extreme weather events”.
  Of course it then goes on to say that “climate models indicate that increased CO2 may lead to increased temperature and….. blah, blah, blah… extreme weather events”
  And all anyone hears about is what the models say.

Installation of offshore wind turbines in the north- east USA is killing whales. This is from the sonar, piledriving and seabed disturbance for cables. The slaughter might even exterminate a species. However, Greenpeace and their political arm, the Democrats, won’t say anything about it. I wonder why? Like the onshore farms being able to kill eagles and other protected birds without penalty. Only reliable energy sources are bad.
They want to install the same plant here off the coast of Taranaki – you know, the area where net fishing is prohibited because of the threat to the sub-species of Hector dolphins. And offshore ironsand mining wasn’t allowed. There are lots of sea bird colonies there as well. Why haven’t the government said no to this proposal? Even National is quiet on the issue. Are they all anti-conservation and don’t believe in the science?

    * Load onto ships
    * Sail it over to UK.

    If so, then surely it would also be sustainable/green to:
    * Hunt sperm whales in NZ.
    * Ship the oil to UK.

  Strange thing is whales don’t collide with each other.

    What they believe is occurring is the noise of the undersea work is extremely loud to the whales’ sensitive hearing – they are supposed to be able to hear other whales 1000km away. The noise from things like sonar either damages the whales’ internal organs or they flee in panic. Hitting a ship is a lot different to bumping into another soft body.

      The only reason it is not louder is because above this level the water turns to steam, as in cavitates.
      Considering this level of audible assault, it is a beyond silly to suggest their heating would be damaged by wind turbine construction noise.
      I was developing hydrophones once for world leading whale researchers and they used to scoff at idiotic statements like this (which popped up on a regular basis).

        This allows them to communicate probably in excess of 1000 km etc.
        I too used to have ” whale observers” onboard during seismic operations.
        These are very loud pneumatic gun arrays.
        Never effected them too be honest.
        If anything attracted them due too curiosity durung operations.

      Haven’t seen it suggested yet but, I was wondering if once the urbines are fully operational they still have the potential to upset whale behaviour.
      Although the complaint is no longer heard in the media, many people are reportedly upset by the noise of the turbine blades or mechanical hub which can reach 105 decibels at maximum capacity.

        Sound is just energy. The media is important, and the speed of sound changes depending on through which media it is transmitted. With all noise, the distance from the noise decreases the “volume” by the cube law. Low frequency sounds travel but high frequency attenuates. Thats why rock bands like lots of bass. The decibel scale is not linear but a power equation. The commonly used decibel A scale (dBA) doesn’t record any energy below about 20Hz. This is above the blade pass frequency for the windmills. The windmills emit infasound – people feel it more than hear it and it goes a long way.

      I,m currently in South Georgia and this season we have had a abundance of whales more so than previous years. The whales that cause us the most problems are the Orcas and Sperms as they will strip the lines, we have tried turning on our sonar and the whales completely ignore it, it dosen’t seem to deterr or effect them at all they just float along with us until going under for another feed. Sperms will atleast leave fish on line but the Orcas will eat every single fish leaving nothing, when they show up its time to run from them.

    Unfortunately the National party are completely infatuated with it. I said above the Nats have been taken over by the Green Left, but a more accurate term is “The Green Corporate Left”.
    
    Mr Luxon was CEO of Unilever Canada and Air NZ, two of the most woke corporations on the planet. He said his “proudest achievement” at Air NZ was converting the vehicle fleet to electric.
    
    He presented his party’s energy policies at the premises of a group that is the NZ agency for the Word Economic Foundation.
    
    The Nats have been completely captured by the falsely termed “renewable” energy sector, and in spite of the fact that it is causing power prices to rise all over the globe, and has proved itself to be a completely losing business proposition except for the provision of taxpayer subsidies, they’re going full tilt to impose this farce upon NZ consumers.
    
    Sure, voting for National is a better option than voting for Labour/Greens, but not by much. Little is going to change as long as the Nats remain infatuated with the utterly false concept of man caused climate change. It will probably get worse.

        David Garrett – I honestly don’t know for sure. Liz Gunn is saying the right things and is more trustworthy than Winston. Is it a wasted vote? Maybe this time, but other parties started from a low base and got there eventually, Greens and Act being the obvious example.
        If everybody keeps saying “wasted vote” is a self fulfilling prophecy.
        Maybe it’s 3% this time, then next time people might think their vote isn’t wasted?
        It could go to Peters, he’s saying all the right things about co-governance and covid.
        If he reneges as most on this blog think then that sucks.
        But I can’t vote for Act because of Seymour’s lies around all cause excess mortality and I can’t vote for National because of their refusal to even discuss the covid issues, and probably more importantly, Luxon’s apparent devotion to net zero and his acquiescence to the whole co-governance nightmare.
        
        I refuse to hold my nose and vote for people I don’t respect, right now I have zero respect for Luxon and Seymour.

        Here’s the problem. Vaccination incentives and persuasions abounded during Covid, and Kiwis lost trust. It won’t be regained using the same tactics that lost it. Companies use ‘incentive payments’ to motivate their sales force. Persuade more people to buy the product and the bonus is yours, so get out there and sell, sell, sell. We need to be able to trust doctors more than we trust salespeople.

        Indeed; childhood immunisation was at more than 95% when National left office. By 2022, it was down to 88%, and during that time we had a measles epidemic which sadly spread from South Auckland to Samoa, resulting in the death of dozens of children.

      That is a truly disgusting policy. They should be spending their time trying to rebuild trust in our health system, not repeating the gross Labour policies of bribing people to do what should be done voluntarily because you trust your doctor.
      
      This causes me to be even less likely to visit a doctor. Every time they want to give me something I’ll be wondering if they are doing it due to the financial incentive.

        Clan didn’t push the idea that Luxon was pushing the C19 jab, go back and read the posts. You’re just pushing “misinformation”.
        Hi point was that the policy of paying doctors to encourage vaccinations is bad because this was used for C19 and people lost trust in doctors. Something I agree with. A similar idea is why no one trusts a used car salesman. They have too much invested in getting the sale across the line, so the perception is they will lie to the customer.
        His other point is that government should be rebuilding the lost trust, and you don’t do this by doing more of the same poor policy, you need to change to a better policy. Personally one of honesty would work. If Luxon and/or Seymour were to admit that mistakes were made, the vax wasn’t safe or effective, mandates didn’t work and they will investigate excess mortality and potential jax deaths, I would consider voting for one of these parties.
        They also need to declare that the sate will not coerce the medical fraternity to follow the sate approved agenda. Also that any new vax will under go local testing before being approved, and only based on full disclosure from the supplier on their testing. No secret contracts!
        To get people taking historical vaccines will require a concerted public campaign.

      Frankly measles isn’t an issue in NZ, it’s an issue in parts of Aotearoa eg south Auckland. It’s an issue where people have poor immune function and love in over crowded damp conditions. Same with meningitis – when did you last hear of a case in wider NZ?
      
      If I had kids today I don’t think I’d bother with vaccinations at all. Whooping cough went through my local school a few years back. The only kids not to get it was apparently unvaccinated (for everything)….no correlation is not causation but with the covid debacle I am now questioning – and yes, doing my own research into – everything I once accepted as fact.
      
      I doubt I’m alone in this.

    Looking forward to emailing in my vote toc hange this lot and hopefully the OVERTON window will open wide enough on 15th October to get some reality back in to the land I love.
    
    Meanwhile I will pop down to my local market and pickup a dozen eggs ($3nzd) plentiful supply, veggies at $1.75 NZD kg then walk back to my modern furnished and serviced one bedroom apartment, with balcony $82NZD a week (includes water, hi-speed internet, security parking etc).
    
    Might go for a swim this afternoon(year round activity) then pop down to the pub later for a beer($1.25-1.26NZD a glass)

    Agree. The economics are not bad for onshore sites. Offshore will be triple the cost. Yes might get more consistent wind but you’d get most of the benefit from building in diverse parts of the land. It’s consistency that’s a problem with onshore wind, not wind strength.

      Those provisions relate to detaining the offender.
      
      However the security guard should be able to prevent the removal of goods from the property (S53). That is grab and hold onto the bags, trolley etc, but not hit or injure them.
      
      S53 Every one in peaceable possession of any movable thing under a claim of right, and every one acting under his or her authority, is protected from criminal responsibility for defending his or her possession by the use of reasonable force, even against a person entitled by law to possession, if he or she does not strike or do bodily harm to the other person.
      
      When the offender starts becoming violent, then you start getting into assault.
      S192(1) Every one is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years who assaults any other person with intent—
      (a) to commit or facilitate the commission of any imprisonable offence;
      
      S223 Punishment of theft
      Every one who commits theft (except under section 220A) is liable as follows:
      (a) in the case of any offence against section 220, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 7 years; or
      (b) if the value of the property stolen exceeds $1,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 7 years; or
      (c) if the value of the property stolen exceeds $500 but does not exceed $1,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 1 year; or
      (d) if the value of the property stolen does not exceed $500, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months.
      
      So: see thief walking out. Seek to restrain the property being stolen (not the thief). Thief swings at you. They have committed an assault to facilitate the theft, even if it’s imprisonable by only 3 months.
      
      The term of imprisonment for the assault S192(1) is 3 years, and so you then qualify for S35 Every one is justified in arresting without warrant—
      (a) any person whom he or she finds committing any offence against this Act for which the maximum punishment is not less than 3 years’ imprisonment:
      
      The only downside being you have to draw the assault.
      
      Having said that, I am not a lawyer or a cop it’s just a reading of the legislation

    This case is instructive and alarming all at once. The law around CA is that it can only be done at night or if by day the offence is punishable by a maximum of three years imprisonment.
    
    I can’t quite work out why the night/day distinction. Is it because fewer police are on duty at night and response time is an issue? Apparently the store manager and Scott were told the police would not be attending the incident and the thief must be let go. So we have the same conditions as if it were at night. Police are so stretched and unresponsive that they simply won’t respond.
    
    The security guards, four of them, all stood around Scott in a cordon as he held the thief down, yet not one of them took over from him. Obviously they knew the law and didn’t want to get involved.
    
    That’s a sickening indictment of the law and the state of our social cohesiveness. Scott ain’t a young man. As he said, he’s glad he now lives in Fiji, and he didn’t have to become involved. Yet he did. His instinct was to do the right thing.
    
    But why bother if this is the result? Don’t get involved. Turn your head and walk on. Let the thugs steal, and assault and cause mayhem. Just leave it to the cops who usually won’t respond.
    
    We don’t want vigilantes but there’s a big difference between Charles Bronson roaming the streets with a .45 revolver and cowering down while watching your country turn to shit.

  Democracy is supposed to be a feedback cycle – a Darwinian survival of the fittest:
  * The parties and policies that people like thrive.
  * The parties and politics that people do not like do not thrive. They either shrivel up or change.
  
  Whenever you put a thumb on the scales you are interfering with that, be it through the MSM (or Bob) interfering in politics or welfare that takes away incentives to improve.
  
  That interference might give a short term “win”, but it makes things worse in the longer term.
  
  If they had not “saved” Labour back then then maybe Labour would have had to learn the lessons it hasn’t learned yet. Labour would likely be far stronger, and better, now. And National would be better too because they would be competing with a stronger Labour.

    Interestingly the Left and MSM narrative to this day is that Labour and Lange won the 1984 election and kicked out Muldoon.
    
    However if one looks at the electorate votes at the time, Bob Jones’ NZ Party ousted many of the sitting National MP’s, paving the way for a Labour victory (as of course under FPP, the NZ Party didn’t make it into Parliament).
    
    Whilst Bob Jones got what he wanted – Labour adopting his free-market economic plan – NZ also inherited the other radical Labour changes impacting health, education, law and order, discipline, collective defence and gave us Geoffrey Palmer (undefined Treaty principles, anyone?) and setup the ascendancy of H1 to change the NZ landscape for the next 3 decades.

Thinking about foreign buyers tax revenue. While I have no idea how National and those economists came up with their numbers, or what they consider demand might be, did they count up the number of homes already valued at over $2mill? And the impacts of a local ageing population selling up, and of willing, wealthy, older foreign buyers and their families.

Just in my street of 80 homes there would be at least 50 that would sell over the $2mill. Pretty much all the rest would be close and many more in the suburb. Wellington city fringe suburb. So not Auckland or Queenstown. One of the economists quoted in the media, Mr Warburton, suggested some foreign buyers might be willing to pay $2m for a $1.5m home. Plenty at $1.5m in the country. Anyway increased demand in that price range will push prices up anyway, even if paying more initially is just pocket change.

We are also beginning to see high end full service retirement communities like The Helier. If these apartments fall within the foreign buyer criteria there could be serious demand from foreign buyers and their family members. And readily scalable. Believe the least expensive of the 80 units there is touching on the $2mill, with (expensive) care if required privately funded by occupants. Think I saw that the most expensive sold before completion for about $5mill. Did the economists consider that scenario, aka if we build it they will come?

Guess I am saying there could be demand, and current or new supply to meet it. A potential sea change for New Zealand on several fronts.

  People at the top end just DGAF about the 15% and will buy something special just because they want to.

  Was always going to happen. All men are rapists, and that’s the position of the Left and has been for quite some time.
  
  The whole #metoo thing, and the strange recent fixation on “consent”, is just the latest cog in a mechanism to put men on the stand in court and require them to prove the *didn’t* rape, or for that matter that they didn’t do a whole range of things.
  
  #metoo was about “believe all women” which in itself is a reversal of the burden of proof. The consent movement is about entrapment. The goal is to create victims where none exist. Every woman can claim lack of consent if she so chooses. Men can’t. The physiological reasons for that should be obvious.
  
  So you have the means of entrapment followed by criminal procedures that require proof of innocence, happening within an ideological context of all men being rapists by their very nature.
  
  Labour also announced policies to have trial by jury made even more difficult than it is now, and to allow class action lawsuits which is all about activism.

  This has been in the law since the late 1980’s, so have been in existence for nearly 40 years. It was part of the customary fisheries settlements under the Treaty of Waitangi. Done pursuant to Article 2 which provides for protection of lands and fisheries.

    If you read the Maori version of the Treaty, which is the only one that matters, and the final English draft (Littlewood), Forests and Fisheries are not mentioned. People should learn the true facts and not go by earlier English drafts of the Treaty. A good reason why it should be filed away – everyone is reading different earlier versions of the Treaty and all the true settlements were done long long ago.

Just in case a wild pit bull walks past so they can shoot dozens of rounds all over the neighborhood missing every one as they did at a menacing pit bull in Auckland 10 or so years ago. the highly trained sharpshooters, 6 of them emptied their Glocks at the dog and scored killing shots on letterbox’s, houses, cars, street signs, hub caps , lamp posts, even the actual street ,the dog ran off unscathed.
  Now these same warriors are equipped with a far more deadly and complex firearm I would make the assumption that stray dogs are smart enough to realize they are probably outgunned in 2023 ,damage to the neighborhood is guaranteed if one of them gets trigger happy though.

    This is somewhat related.
    
    About ten years ago there was a joint training exercise involving NZ and American troops, and I think maybe some Brits and Aussies. Held in South Canterbury but it included an “urban pacification” exercise.
    
    The urb chosen to be pacified was Timaru, all said and done a decently-sized place. I walked out of my gate that day and standing at the intersection just 20m away were clumps of troops holding their rifles, looking very deadly.
    
    An American captain was interviewed for one of the local rags with comments to the effect that this was very unique for his men because in the US they don’t use real civilian areas for their training. Not allowed. They do it in special training facilities.
    
    I thought it was over the top. I didn’t like it, and I believe in a well-trained, well-equipped military. When I told an American friend about this–a former Marine–he just said, hmm…

Can anyone think of a single thing that this Labour government have done that is worth keeping?

National governments, being conservative in nature, do not like radical change. Labour always want to change the world. We have an unfortunate cycle where Labour does stuff, and then National tries to manage it properly. This results in a continual slide to the left. Some people say National are Labour Lite. That isn’t really true. Most of the things Labour does National would never do themselves. But their reluctance to undo those things when in office is a problem.

This time things need to be different. We have just survived the worst government in my memory, which is saying a lot because I can remember Muldoon. Every single thing that this Labour government have done in office has not just been just been poorly executed but is actually a terrible idea at root. Which is why I am asking the question.

Can anyone think of a single thing that this Labour government have done that is worth keeping?

Imagine if I wrote this post around June 2017. How many Down ticks would I have received?

“I think over the next 5-6 yrs we are going to see huge change in NZ and around the world. My top 10 predictions, and remember, it is always a conspiracy theory…. until it isn’t !

1. Labour are about to ditch Angry Andrew. I expect them to choose the leader of the World Socialist Youth (Ardern) as their new leader despite her having done nothing as an MP.
Labour will then win the 2017 election with Winston holding the balance and choosing Labour.
2. We will then see a socialist siht-storm hit NZ like we’ve never seen before!
3. Globalists are planning a global pandemic of some sort (WEF/WHO/UN and the Gates Foundation are all predicting this and that the world needs more vaccines.)
4. The global pandemic will mean NZ and most western countries plus China will lockdown all citizens in their homes for months on end. But we will all still catch this new virus.
5. Ardern will mandate new genetic based “vaccines”. If you don’t take these you will be banned from jobs and public places such as concerts etc. They will do a whole stack of weird stuff like quarantine centres and they will involve the army.
6. NATO will somehow end up in a war with Russia.
7. The US will try and put Trump in jail.
8. The 2023 election will be all about retaining “one person one vote” as Labour have forced through radical Māori Separatist policies including a separate health service, separate local council wards.
9. Māori would have been given full control of all local council water systems and the entire coastline/rivers/lakes etc by 2023.
10. By 2023 Men will be allowed in women’s toilets and changing rooms, men will now be having babies and somehow breast feeding. (actually that one is sarcasm – that could never happen!)

Maybe we all have missed something .Here we have the worst Labour Government ever . Out trying to make a lot of drama about a few well deserved “TAX CUTS” for NZs by National Government should they get the Treasury Benches on the Ardern decided election date of 14 October 2023 .That was her legacy as she cut and run after her Cabal had virtually frittered away NZs well being and economy of $100,000,000,000 Billion Dollars .
All the bribed so called NZs Mainstream Media
are aboard out to kneecap National with Hipkins running the show to deny NZs some well overdue “TAX CUTS”.
Don’t think it will work. Maybe some investigation into who or what scooped the pool of NZs $100,000,000,000 Billion Dollars frittered away in just Three short years. That would be more realistic and truthful than Hipkins gang and NZs so called Mainstream Media running scared as they see their own well bribed gravy train being cancelled by a real Adult Government in waiting.
Maybe Two Ticks Blue is the answer for all hard working NZs Tax Payers .

Is the Productivity Commission looking at the amount of time government departments, central and local officials, educators, and many others are spending on Maori ceremonies and customs?

Why not? In our bureaucracies and other organisations this tiresome trivia is taking increasing hours of work time.

The commission does have other things on its mind. Like the recent report it brought out: “A quantitative analysis of disadvantage and how it persists in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

To be fair, this was in response to the Labour Misgovernment asking the commission to undertake “a inquiry into economic inclusion and social mobility, with a focus on supporting people experiencing persistent disadvantage to live better lives.”

The commission’s last “Productivity by Numbers” report, put up 74 days ago, stated New Zealand’s economy had gone from being one of the most productive to one of the least productive in the OECD.

A number of State and local body employees have told me how frustrating and time consuming Maori ceremonies are at their workplaces.

On voting day they should remember this stuff would only get worse under Labour.

    As someone who works from home, I unsurprisingly don’t buy into this myth that people working from home aren’t doing anything. If they are not working at home they were not working in the office.
    
    If I wasn’t “working” I am fairly sure the people who pay me would notice.
    
    Yes of course there are working age people at the supermarket during the day during the week. Some are not in the workforce. Others have the day off work. Because they work on Saturday or Sunday or both.

In the herald this morning we have the story of a good Samaritan holding down a scumbag stealing booze from a Akl downtown supermarket only to be informed by management the Police could end up arresting him if the crim lays a complaint!

Is this what the law has come down to in this country?

Criminals can lay complaints to the police on members of the public physically restraining them in the act of committing a crime.

We need sensible, rational, and moral thinking people making our laws and judges carrying it out.

A good start would be getting rid of Labour.

No dude, you’re thinking of this incorrectly. It is $25000 that you were overpaid, have spent on other things, and now must pay back. If your daughters braces had been so important then you would have spent the overpayment on those instead of whatever you spent it on.

    When I had a business I drew the same income each year. Some years I earned way more then I drew, other years way less. That was how I had a stable income.
    
    Larger businesses might want to retain some earning in the business for future investment.
    
    Sounds to me that his accountant has given poor advice.
    
    A friend got massively done for child support when he lost his job, became self employed with very variable income. IRD actually made him pay the same in the low years as in the high income years on the basis that he “clearly had the potential to earn more” in the low income year and was shirking his responsibilities. Which is clearly about propping up other peoples kids as he was paying way more than his ex wife was receiving….

  The inherent problem here is that the self-employed can rort the system by artificially reducing their income. They can also claim expenses against that income that a wage and salary earner cannot, and potentially even do a few cash jobs on the side. In this case he failed to structure his tax affairs correctly, so ended up being assessed based on his actual income of over $100K, rather than the $48K income he was drawing down from his business. $48K avoids the 30% tax rate and gives you the maximum entitlement to WFF. $100K gives you virtually no entitlement.
  The case highlights the need to make the tax system fairer, and the need to remove the distortions created by the welfare system. It would be better to support families through tax free thresholds, income splitting and lower cost services, instead on a WFF rebate that it open to manipulation by the self employed.

I watched the Wellington Central candidates’ debate on the Stuff website last evening. Along with the two reporters (of the article, below), I, too, was pleasantly surprised at how polite towards each other the candidates were.

In my view, the winner “on the night” was Green candidate, Tamatha Paul, closely followed by National’s Scott Sheeran. As the reporters say, “The stand out candidate was Paul.” I suspect Wellington Central is now a two-way race between these two candidates.

        Oh, gosh, like I said to Tom Hunter on Saturday night, I’m an “elections” person, not a “politics” person. But, I’ll give it a go.
        
        Ibrahim Omer (who I happily accept is basically now a Wellington boy), is a personable guy, with a touching “back story”, but who, it seems to me, is quite the wrong candidate for Wellington Central: one of the country’s wealthiest electorates. I suspect you would agree.
        
        Having said that, the only other person Labour could reasonably have put up, that I am aware of, was Brooklyn(?)-resident, Ayesha Verrall! – a List-only candidate if ever there was one. I mean, let’s face it, who else was there – Berhampore(?)/Rongotai electorate-residing Andrew Little? I don’t think so. He, too, would have gone down like a cup of cold sick.
        
        So, to answer your question: no. Omer was not put up to lose to the Greens. In fact, I don’t quite see how Labour would consider such a “scheme” would benefit them.
        
        I have no inside knowledge, at all – I’m just an ordinary guy – but I would say that Labour simply had no-one else. Grant Robertson, not realising until it was too late, that he was going to bail, had not mentored a successor. Besides, that would be a reckless gamble by Labour, considering that National would almost certainly put up a credible, indeed excellent, candidate, as they have done, thereby risking losing the seat to “the enemy”.
        
        In addition, it almost certainly never occurred to Labour that James Shaw would, um, stand down, thereby allowing the very locally-popular Tamatha Paul to be selected as the Greens’ candidate.
        
        In short, it seems to me that, for Labour, the Wellington Central situation has turned out to be a “perfect storm”. The seat has gone. All that remains to be seen, is which of two excellent candidates, Paul, or Sheeran, takes it.

They ended the session at $US63.59, and rose further to above $US65 in early after-hours trading.

“Five cars have been destroyed at Sydney Airport after a battery from a luxury electric car burst into flames.
There had been some problem with the car and the battery had been removed.
We believe that the car has suffered some mechanical damage which can contribute to a battery breaking down and catching fire without notice.”

The article included the usual fact that electric vehicle fires are no more, or in fact less, likely than petrol powered vehicles.
Strangely, they don’t seem to be reported in the media when they happen.

  While petrol powered vehicle fires might be more common, the big difference is that petrol fires are relatively easy to extinguish.
  
  Normal fires require fuel + external oxygen (normally from air). Normal firefighting generally works around cutting off the supply of external oxygen through covering the fire with foam, CO2 or such.
  
  EV fires are more like chemical reactions. They are not fires in the normal sense of the word. Yes, the EV battery fires do involve oxygen, but it is not external oxygen. The EV batteries create the oxygen themselves. This means that spraying it with foam etc does not help.
  
  The distinction is a bit like trying to compare a charcoal fire with a gunpowder “fire”. A charcoal fire needs external oxygen to burn. Gunpowder does not because it creates its own oxygen by breaking down the saltpetre. Gunpowder will burn happily, and vigorously, in CO2.
  
  The noxious fumes coming out of an EV fire also make it far more dangerous for anyone trying to fight the fire.

Ironically, banning BCF was arguably the worst thing govts could have done for the enviroment, since it was one of the most efficient fire extinguishing agents ever, particularly in dealing with petro-chemical product based fires.

If there is a National/Act government after the election the first big benefit will be the reduction in minority source noise.
Misinformation, Disinformation, Hate Speech, Gender arguments, Diversity, Trade Union disruption,etc, will all quickly return to their correct level of importance.

  Why would it reduce? Most of that noise comes from media and the various think tanks, activist groups, public intellectuals and social media luvvies they endlessly cite and interview.
  
  Look at the rabid attention paid to National’s tax plan. It’s so transparently the media acting as an arm of the Labour/Green Parties.
  
  Now, National’s policy might be a turkey but plenty of other policies are likewise fowl and they are being given no such treatment.
  
  That isn’t going to stop post-election. It’ll get even louder and I don’t think Luxon can handle that jandal. It might well affect the coalition negotiations and the speed and doggedness with which our many problems are addressed.

Following the Kellie Jay Keen riot in Auckland, the police received OIA requests for internal communications about how they were planning to manage the event and the protestors.

This looks like a partial release. However it shows that the police were talking to the trans activists beforehand and were satisfied that everything would be fine.

What really is disturbing is that after the riot happened and Kellie Jay Keen left New Zealand, the police officer in charge of the operation received an email from his superior officer.. “Well done on managing a challenging operation.” 🤯

We all know that South Africa has an extremely high murder rate. However, according to those in the know, the official murder rate is woefully under reported and probably needs to be doubled or trebled.

Doubling the official murder rate would bump it up to about 140 murders per day.

That would put the SA murder rate at around 80 – 100 per 100k per year – by far the highest in the world (assuming Jamaica etc are not also massively under counting).

That would be around 4 to 5 thousand per year for an NZ-sized population.

That would mean that approx 5 to 6% of all deaths in SA are murder.

  I have a few SA friends – one has an elderly mother living in SA and he would love to go back with his fmaily to visit over Christmas but is in two minds as to whether he can risk taking his own family with him! One of his friends (living in Aussie) went back to SA earlier this year and was shot and badly wounded at a traffic stop – and he’s considered lucky compared to what can happen!
  
  I’ve visited a few times and it is an amazingly beautiful country with some amazing people – some of the friendliest and jovial people I’ve met, but bloody hell it’s gone next level dangerous!!!
  
  I don’t envy anyone who has family still there!

Simon Bridges, now chief of the Auckland Business Chamber, advocates a national transport project – that is, largely new and better roads – to lift the national economy.

He cites benefits of two specific northern roading projects, which would make savings for businesses and others who would use them.

How would NZ finance a national roading project?

The Germans seem to have used something like a chain letter.

As I understand, the autobahn builders were paid with debentures issued by the Finance ministry. These could be redeemed at a discount by banks who were part of a consortium.

The banks could then redeem the bonds at the Reichsbank, the German central bank from 1876 until 1945.

The Reichsbank was promised that they would be honoured by the Government, at fixed times, and guaranteed by taxes.

If Hitler makes a promise what do his bankers say? “Sorry, Adolf. The Burghof at Berchtesgaden by itself isn’t quite enough security.”

Hitler’s panzering around Europe would have diverted bankers’ attention away from their autobahn bonds.

If only NZ hadn’t blown tens of billions on the Covid shutdown …

  I mentioned this yesterday. What is it with all the gays in Labour. It is well above the percentage in the community. I believe in live and let live, so don’t have a problem with it, but am curious as to why they are drawn to politics. (1) Resign from Parliament, and go off and do something else?
(2) Resign from Cabinet, and sit on the back benches?
(3) Resign as Minister of Finance, but remain in Cabinet with other portfolio responsibilities?

Hmm, that’s a toughie. I wonder what Kiwibloggers think she means. I know what I think.

        So you, too, expect to be disappointed, not just by Willis, but by Luxon, Seymour, et al, too, kowtow? It’s a pretty miserable prospect, isn’t it?
        
        What we need is a new way of electing those who would represent us in parliament. We need to switch to PR/STV in large, multimember electoral areas (not districts), whereby all our MPs are directly elected by the People, and only a small percentage of votes cast are ineffective in helping to elect someone.
        
        I’ll leave it at that, for now.

Why is TVNZ reporting Willis’ statement that she would resign if tax cuts were not delivered as such a negative bombshell ?
I know it is unusual given Labour’s tenure for ministers to take responsibility for delivering their promises, but does anyone doubt National will implement their tax cut promise ?
TVNZ are really getting desperate to push their team.

We are expecting about a 2% point increase in unemployment… around 60k.

I am quite comfortable with 15k of those being public servants from Wellington. Even more would be good. They can all take their comms degrees and policy degrees to Australia. Raise our productivity.

I now understand why Chippy was keen to sort the Australian residency issue. And why Robbo wanted his employment insurance scheme. Imagine paying that out this year for 60k people with little money coming in on premiums yet.

What a damn good boss

A young Kiwi man has gone global after a hilarious prank from his employer blew so far out of proportion that people from overseas started getting in on the act.

Despite being his birthday, Thursday was supposed to be just another day for West Aucklander Jack Sparrow (yes, that’s his real name).

Instead, the 21-year-old would become the butt of a prank that involved more than 500 people from across the globe.

Unknown to Sparrow, his boss Brendon Day had put up a sign in the middle of Kumeu with Sparrow’s face plastered all over it.

The sign featured instructions: “Today is Jack Sparrows 21st birthday. Text to wish him happy birthday”, with Sparrow’s number on display.

Seems to either be eating or visiting kindergartens, too scared of visiting adults?

Chris Hipkins has been visiting a local kindy provider, where he talked about extending free to 2-year-olds.

National is underfunding early childhood education, he said.

“They want to take away that funding.

“National also want to sack people working in Kainga Ora.”

The National Party want to turn their back on progress in social housing, he said.

“National’s numbers simply don’t add up with regard to their tax plan.

“It’s irresponsible and unaffordable.”

Hipkins said National has a multi-billion dollar hole in their tax plan, which will mean cuts to education and health services.

National also want to cut what they call back room roles that will ultimately affect services Kiwis rely on.

So why has our Government Leaders like Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Housing Minister Megan Woods let our tenants of Kianga Ora be behind in rents to the tune of $60 million.

Newshub can reveal emergency housing tenants owe the government more than $60 million. Rent was introduced on the scheme three years ago to ease the burden on the taxpayer. But just 22 percent of those households have paid.
