Will and could West Coast Tasman flip.
This shows you how likely it is going to happen when people are talking that Maureen Pugh is set to oust long servings Labour MP Damien O’conner from this loyal red seat where it all began for the Labour Party.
This shows that the people on the West Coast have had enough because the cost of living is hurting with many on the West Coast who have supported Damien O’conner since1996 saying its not good enough and at a recent Election debate in Greymouth heckled the long serving MP about his and Labours performance in Government.
Whilst I am no Maureen Pugh fan you have to say with all the hard work she has put in for the National Party this could be the nail in the coffin for the Labour Party.

    If Maureen has been reeducated by him she has probably already suppressed most of it.

  Yeah, Maureen Pugh who at least had the initiative to seek truth, but then was forced to recant and lie by Mr Luxon, and did so with embarrassing alacrity.
  
  Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown made me smile when he said on Q and A this morning (IIRC) that deciding who to vote for this election was like driving into Te Awamutu late at night and looking for a meal. You find one place that’s still open, but there’s nothing on the menu you want to eat.
  
  So right. Wonder how many people will choose to go to bed hungry.

    Pining for the Fjords, Redbaiter? This political landscape that we find ourselves in is proceeding in one direction only. There is no pendulum this time. The Marxists have so much entrenched power now.
    The menu has become junk food, and in the next town also. So many bureaucratic Pitbulls in position have their jaws locked on the status quo, nothing substantive can change beyond an uprising.

  It is highly possible that Maureen will topple Damien however Patrick Phelps entering the race as an independent has perhaps made things just a bit harder for her. Patrick IMO is likely to take more potential votes from Maureen than from Damien. Patrick has been pushing the line vote for me as you are going to get Damien and Maureen via the list anyway. BTW I would be happy if either Maureen or Patrick won this seat and to be realistic despite being highly sound Patrick has little chance due to low name recognition. Damien whilst good on a personal level has been a disaster for the Coast with his following of Labour policy rather than promoting what is good for Coast/Tasman. I know all three mentioned from some decades back and have relations on the Coast so have some idea of what is going on.

    Patrick is a former red radio journalist who wants to combat climate change and lower our emissions. If National voters do their research, I can’t see them abandoning Maureen for Patrick. I have my suspicions about Patrick. I have an antipathy towards Independent MP’s that may align themselves with the Left at any moment. If I lived on the West Coast, I would not give my electorate vote to Patrick. I would not encourage any right of centre voters to vote for Patrick. On the other hand, I would dearly love for half the Labour supporters on the West Coast to vote for Patrick.

      Was he one of those dropping the 16 tonnes of brodifacoum on Great Barrier Island when DOC deliberately slaughtered hundreds of native weka in an ideological pursuit to turn one of the off shore islands into a haven for migratory, non native seabirds?
      Native weka which were a threatened species and which DOC relocated there to begin with?
      
      Oh, they also slaughtered native kereru, hawk, waxeye, piwakawaka and anything else that visited the island in the following couple of weeks. Because they are such a ‘kind and caring’ government organisation, in the mold of Jacinda Ardern.

    In the Labour landslide of 2020, O’Connor won the seat by 6,208 votes. I think National could take it. Labour will see a massive swing against it. 2008 showed Labour and O’Connor can lose this seat.

    He visited the Coast for the first time in ages this week, possibly a year of so. He must be feeling under threat !

      My comment doesn’t say I support O’Connor – I say that there is no chance he loses to Pugh.
      
      He should be banished from the Coast given the amount of damage that he and his parties policies have done to this place.
      
      You have to remember what is bedded in down here in terms of historic voting.
      
      Very happy to be proven wrong, but from a Coast perspective Patrick Phelps is the best option.

    No one I’ve talked to from Greymouth has taken that line. A couple of months back we holidayed in Buller, where Damien was raised and has family, and found there was strong anti Labour sentiment there. His strongest support is now in the north of the electorate and with those on benefits. In Greymouth which we also visited nearly everyone we talked to supported Maureen Pugh. BTW I don’t think Patrick Phelps is closer to Labour than National. He has spoken up against the locking up of stewardship land for mining which is Labour policy as has Maureen who gained a lot of support for her stance on utilising wind thrown timber on crown land excluding National Parks. This one will be an interesting race.

    Actually it was nothing of the sort. Luxon clearly endured 20mins of stupid tax policy funding questions and said thats enough. Burr replaced Tova as the Newshub UK reporter and is now back here. It seems like he is following in Tovas footsteps. Doesn’t seem to be a smart move Lloyd.

      And did I hear Burr correctly (as he followed Luxon down the road) telling Luxon what the rules are? In essence, Burr’s rule is: Luxon has to stand in front of Burr answering questions until Burr decides he’s finished.
      
      @JC60: You might’ve missed Burr’s vital role at Today FM which, tragically, is no more. Tova worked there too.
      
      But I’m sure the demise of Today FM had nothing to do with Lloyd and Tova. They were obviously keeping it afloat with their riveting opinions. The low audience share must’ve been caused by reactionary forces on the right… funded by dark money….
      
      P.S. Every Grant Robertson budget has had a massive HOLE in it, called the deficit…. You couldn’t run a household like that, but in a Labour government, you get the Finance job!

        If they release the model (which is what they’re really asking for) then someone will mess with the assumptions and say “look, your model says this” and then there is endless forensic tit-for-tat.
        
        I don’t believe the underlying models for the hockey stick graph were ever released, or for claiming sea levels will rise 1 metre in 50 years, or for the polar ice caps will be ice free in 10 years (is it 3 times now?).
        
        If you jump every time Lloyd Burr, or Tova O’brien, or Jessica Mutch or Katie Bradford or anyone else demands something from you, you become their toy.
        
        I’m at the point where the first politician to look one of them in the eye and say “fuck off, you dick” gets my vote.

  We have weeks of daily attacks on the numbers behind a small part of Nationals tax cuts but zero questions on the costings of Labours dental policy (hint it’s much more than they’re claiming) and absolutely no questions about where the funding comes from.
  
  I will never forget the lack of interest in the reality of Labours 100,000 homes policy prior to the 2017 election and how immediately after the media were saying, of course it wasn’t possible it was always aspirational.

Nothing to show for it but Robertson just has to utter “all fully costed and funded” and it seems to work on journalists like a Jedi mind trick. Where are Robertson’s granular-level projections on how we’ll go from some the biggest deficits we’ve ever seem into a magic surplus in 2027? Nowhere to be seen of course.     It’s not the Maori Party’s “racism” that is the problem, it’s that stupid White people have been psyoped into thinking that “racism” is a moral evil. “Racism” just means White people asserting themselves – it beggars belief so many of us don’t understand this. Maoris aren’t “racist” because they aren’t White. They may consider themselves racially superior (why, I can’t imagine), but that isn’t what racism is.
    
    Don’t believe me? Why then is “reverse racism” the label given to a White being subject to someone else’s expression of racial superiority? I’ve told you why.
    
    Necessarily, then, unless White people want to continue to be walked over, marginalised and ground into the dust, we have to be “racist” simply because racism is Whites asserting themselves and not deferring to non-Whites.
    
    If Europeans and their so-called representatives gave up on trying to appear “anti-racist” then we’d be able to deal with the issues facing the country.

Last night I was privileged to see what has to be arguably the greatest one day cricket innings if all time with the Yarpies scoring 415 for 5 in hammering Oz at Centurion Park in Gauteng winning by 164 runs. Klassen scored 174 runs in just 83 balls while Zampa was smashed out of the park with the worst ever bowling performance in one history … 0-113.

There are plenty of free sites supplying the exact same stuff that jumped-up NZ media calls ‘Premium’. Why would I pay good money to look at putrid Emmerson cartoons and the left wing garbage that Simon Wilson produces? If you are buying the physical newspapers or paid subscriptions of media companies that you know are working against the democratic, economic, and societal interests of this country then you are ‘funding the enemy’. This is an existential crisis: please don’t fund the people who wish to destroy us!

Spark shut down a national pager network in 2017 seemingly on the ground pagers were obsolescent and could be replaced by cellphones.

  There is often a tendency for modern technology to be supercede existing products and services, just because it is new. I refer to it as the “seduction of new technology”.
  
  Paging is one good example of one technology that has stood the test of time, and retains an inherent advantage. Spark had to retire their NZ system as it had not been updated over the years, and many of it’s component systems were quite antiquated (I believe it still used a PDP-11 computer at it’s core – those in the know will understand the significance), and yet it was the technology of choice for the Fire Services and as mentioned in the video above, hospitals. Newer systems have replaced the old one, albeit perhaps with only targeted use, but the paging technology is still far more reliable, and accesses way more coverage than cell technology can ever.
  
  In my earlier Opinion Piece here on KB I wrote about the emergency alerting systems in use in NZ, and how the Government went all out for using cell phones rather than the more reliable radio based systems (TSUNADO).
  
  It is evident that much of the decision making is based on superficial perception of what is best. ie New = better. Sadly this premise is false, as many of the older technologies really do stand the test of time, and retain their relevance, albeit unappeciated. IMHO Simpler = better. Especially in critical systems.
  
  Modern systems are very complex. eg. when you send an email, the delivery requires a multitude of devices to work correctly, many based on off shore systems. In challenging times, it just requires one of these many systems to go down and it all fails.
  
  As with many aspects of our society, the decision are made by bureaucrats being “advised” by their major suppliers. Whether that be in communications, health, or computing, we have to be aware of the process by which these decisions are made. Often not in the public interest, and out of the public eye.

    There are many things that contribute to “better”.
    As a technologist myself ( ie a developer of technology) I do agree there is often far too much emphasis on “oooh shiny” and silver bullet thinking.
    
    But I think theexample you mention of using radio based emergency alerts is wrong.
    
    Sure a radio based link might be a bit more reliable than cell, but how many people have a radio turned on in their house, or an emergency equipped radio that turns itself on when it hears the tones? Cellphones and cellphone towers are ubiquitous. They are extremely reliable.
    If one tower falls over then phones immediately switch over to another tower and most phones are tracking the datastreams from multiple towers simultaneously.
    In this case, phones win by a mile.

      cmm, we must “meet up” sometime -much to chat about.
      
      For the cost of the cell tower upgrades to make cell broadcasting work, the govt could have installed at an alert radio in each household – certainly in the most vulnerable regions. Instead the mobile networks got their 4G upgrade (included) for free.
      
      The experience is that in a major disaster, generally all towers go down – it is a combination of power and communications links – fibre is very delicate. There’s also a factor that even if a remote tower is still operating, the power consumption on the phone goes way up to maintain communication. And as you know that happens even if the phone is not in use.
      
      Sadly the real world experience is that phones actually do not win by a mile, as was shown in Cyclone Gabrielle (hence a govt commission being created) and in Maui where it was shown that the cyclone cut out power, then some hours later the fires started. Both towers and phones by that time, for the most, ceased to work.
      
      The video above about pagers raised a very good point about battery power. The Tsunado alert radios use a similar regime to last up to 5 days without external charging. It’s all those little things that when added up, make it part of a total package – not a replacement for cell technology or even sirens, but a complementary unit – as originally specified by MCDEM.

  Chch hospital uses a pager/comms system that looks like it is based on WiFi. Pretty nifty units that allow 2 way voice messaging, voice dialing etc.
  While you certainly want something that does not use the cell phone system (or uses it as little as possible) old school pagers are pretty limited.

    The problem with all the technologies that are ‘fancier” is that the basic function of connectivity seems to lower with the increase in sophistication of the technology. eg. 5G means higher data rates but requires way more cell towers as the coverage is less.
    
    As a student I worked as a porter at a hospital, and we had a pager to man the “crash cart” – a defib unit in the days when they only had one or two for the whole hospital. The pagers worked everywhere. Right in the basement, and the morgue well away from the hospital.
    
    As the video above shows, the users prefer the pager units – the batteries last for 2 – 4 weeks, not hours, and are simple to operate, sit snugly on your belt, so not left places.
    
    Pagers are not a replacement for these modern devices, but are still complementary.

    The limited release of the police emails has not shed much light to be honest. There are still two different explanations for the disaster.
    
    1. Police intelligence was wrong. They grossly underestimated the numbers of activists and the potential for violence.
    
    2. Police intelligence did reveal the potential for violence and was deliberately ignored.

    I recall a story in te media of the morning of the major police raid on the peaceful folk.
    
    It stated that a photographer who was woith the journo photoed the many police cars ie the build up to the operation and a senior sgrt saw them and ordered the photographer to delete the photos in front of him.
    Which he did , oddly cos I’d have thought he didn’t have to.
    
    Anyway this was reported in msm but in light of the dramatic events of that day , completelky lost .
    
    And no doubt everyone would have been happy for that to be “lost” as there was only one group of bad people there . The river of filth.

  The choice in this election is quite easy – do you want a country seeking equality of outcome (Labour/Greens) or equality of opportunity (National/NZ First/Act).
  It gets a little bit harder choosing between Luxon, Seymour or Winston on the finer detail when placing your party vote.

  I’ve wondered over the last couple of weeks whether the MSMs blatant Labour bias isn’t partly a “what’s in it for me” response to the possibility of a NACT government.
  
  As well as their institutionalised left favoritism there seems a real fear that the well of propaganda funding could end very quickly after Oct 14th; no one has said it out loud however I would expect some right minded people with long memories to consider it a justified payback time (for eg the PIJF disgrace)

Had to have a bit of a laugh at the reported claims made at a recent meet the candidates gathering (Kaikoura electorate) by the Labour Party hopeful.
Whilst introducing herself to the meeting she informed those assembled that she had “Cabinet potential”.
Wowser.
This is the young woman (who says she is a great admirer of Jacinda) who randomly answered a Labour Party advert seeking somebody to stand. Then she claimed she had close links to the farmers.
Can’t fault her for confidence I guess.

  My Grandfather came to NZ from South Africa before WW1 to get away from Apartheid. He gave away his animal stock and walked off the land. That is how serious this could get. Unfortunately he died before I was born.

    Apartheid did not exist before WW1. That was introduced by the National Party government starting in 1948. However black African voters were unable to vote following legislation instituted by Westminster when the Union was formed in 1910. The main pillars of Apartheid were introduced into law by the Malan government following their win in 1948. These were things such as the Group Areas Act (1950) which determined where you could live, the Mixed Marriages Act (1949) and the Immorality Act which decided who you could marry or have sex with and the Separate Amenities Act which determined where you could pee, eat, swim, etc.

While Labour and the media are making National’s election campaign faulter over the numbers in taxing expensive houses sold to foreigners, we are still supposed to accept Labour’s projected Three Waters costings of $120b – $185 billion to justify the reforms they proposed and have actually passed into law – that is a $65 billion gap, whereas the shortfall claimed on National’s released figures, is a portion of $740 million.

Labour’s figures with their $65 billion gap was to allow enterties to borrow more, so is the fact that although 3 entities are now split into 9, and the remaining Auckland / Northland entity, the largest one, is unchanged, to still provide that borrowing power, or is it to allow Tuku Morgan, out of his Tainui / Waikato region, to preside over a bigger area?

More annual leave, gender pay gaps, anything adding more costs and complexities to small businesses especially … I’ve already seen a move away from employees to independent contractors. And more will follow.

An example. Young tradie in the family worked until recently for a medium sized company. That company has now pretty much moved employees to independent contractors, with advice and support given. Along with encouragement, and in fact requirement, to take on other clients. Big learning curve for ours, but making good bucks and getting to grips with contracting. So unlikely to go back to wages.

Our family tradie firm, not that one, has no employees. We outsource to independent contractors and other small businesses as needed. Now our young tradie is a supplier as well.

Well, SA only beat Scotland 18-3 and today Tonga managed to put 16 points up against Ireland despite the expected loss, so maybe he’s got a point.

SA play Ireland on the 24th. A loss there for Ireland will not prevent them advancing but two weeks later on the 8th they play Scotland which will decide the runner-up from Pool B. That’ll be a good game.

hipkins just announced that there will be a new breast cancer screening programme costing $48 million over four years. ‘Labour says it will be funded from within the $1.43 billion per annum ‘set aside’ for health sector cost pressures in the Budget.’
This c-rap about billions of dollars ‘saved’ or ‘set aside’ or ‘in a fund’….it’s all a load of nonsense. This is all borrowed money that Labour treat not as taxpayer funds but as slush funds, it’s a gigantic and boundless slush fund to be used to fund its endless bribes and giveaways. No media questions are ever asked. Anything hipkins or Robertson says is immediately treated as gospel truth. It is absolutely disgusting!

Act wants Treaty of Waitangi referendum.
National doesn’t support the referendum idea. Come on you guys, the Waitangi Tribunal Treaty version is a fraud. Show me in the original Treaty written in Maori, and the Littlewood Draft where it says “Forestries and Fisheries” You can’t, because it is not there.
Sir Hugh Kawharu added this in 1975. Then further tampering in 1989 from none other than Sir Geoffrey Palmer.
“ACT proposes to legislate the principles of the treaty “based on what the treaty actually says”. The legislation would then go to the public to ratify.”
No! The Waitangi Tribunal Act needs to be rescinded.

“One of the big things is that ACT wants to redefine the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Māori have always been firm and adamant about rangatiratanga as important to them and there’s no place for rangatiratanga under a National-ACT government – and that’s a real fear.” ALWAYS – since 1975. Thet is more than one generation of having lies pumped into their heads.

  Tough. In the Westminster system Parliament is the highest court in the land. It makes the laws and it can make law that prevents judicial activism, and if woke judges want to try it on then parliament can make new law to prevent that, too.
  
  What’s needed is grit and deep desire, qualities I don’t think Luxon has except for perhaps the international death pact of Net Zero.
  
  That said, it *is* a dodgy thing to enshrine Treaty principles in law since there are actually no principles save what is imputed to the original text, and that’s because one wrong word or statement in such legislation could open a Pandora’s box of dangerous misinterpretations.
  
  It’s a damn shame that NZF and ACT are at loggerheads otherwise they’d be able to form a powerful block to steady National’s shaky hand on these matters. The upshot is that National hates Peters’ guts more than they do Seymour’s.

Going a roundabout anti-clockwise is just not on! Auckland Council and Waka Coathanger take note of the roads. This is in a City of less than 300,000 and 730,000 in all of Alaska.

I was at the Act Party Launch.

It was disrupted. The police were outside the venue.

They were asked for assistance to remove the person.

They declined. It was difficult to remove this person and could have resulted in injury to him or Act members at the launch.

The police refused to do their job as at the Posie Parker event.

I think if there was a disrupter at a Labour Party event where the leader was talking and the police were asked to remove the person they would have.
