My wife was shopping in a supermarket yesterday and witnessed a very blatant shoplifting incident. A woman, may be 25 – 30 years old, (we won’t mention ethnicity) took a couple of tins of the most expensive infant formula and walked through the self charging area without stopping. Another customer yelled something and a rather overweight security person then intervened trying to take the tins from her. A couple, who were obviously friends then joined in with lots of yelling, rather foul language and accusations of intimidation, assault, racial profiling, knowing my rights, etc. She left without paying still yelling obscenities out in the carpark.

The security person seemed to be at pains not to handle any of the three involved, rather blocking them and trying to grab the tins from her. Among the claims the thief made were: she had hungry babies, she was desperate, she forgot her purse, the supermarket could afford it, lots of people take food without paying, plus other excuses.

According to a granddaughter who works part time stacking shelves the problem is growing, it is very significant and impacts all prices. She said the manager told her it costs him between $50 and $100 for every $1.00 in value stolen. They are told not to intervene but report theft. Some even fill trolleys and walk out getting away with it.

      John L: We need a change of laws, and urgently, to give shop staff – including security – the right to stop people and search them – provided there is a clear notice warning of that possibility on the door of the premises, which you still see now and then.

    I don’t understand this. I’m fairly certain that general public may use something like “That force which is reasonably necessary to prevent the commission of a crime” in NZ. So stopping a thief seems well within rights of a security guard or any member of the general public
    
    If the problem is that they are afraid of being done for assault then the problem is the police+prosecution and judiciary for being pricks about guarding what they see as their ‘turf’ from others stepping in because they aren’t adequately addressing the problem.
    
    It shouldn’t require any law changes, just a change in how police + judiciary etc accommodate reasonable society-protecting behaviour

      Back in 1995 I made a citizens arrest of a guy who had stolen a car from the dealership I managed. Long story short a mate who owned a tyre shop rang me to report the guy had turned up wanting to swop the aftermarket wheels for standard wheels. I rang the cops to tell them when the guy was turning up to collect the car. I arrived at the tyre shop before the cops and put my hand on the crooks shoulder and said ( and I enjoyed this) Your nicked thats my car. The cops turned up a couple of minutes later and cuffed the guy and took him away. They said I was well within my rights to do what I did. Citizens arrests are still on the books.

    I don’t think that is the law. Rather that is company policy.
    
    If you handled a person to repossess some stolen property then I doubt very much they’d be able to ping you for assault.
    
    Sure, if you punched their lights out, but firmly grabbing an arm etc I doubt it.

      Might it also be safety elf “Worksafe” stupidity? That if a security guard gets injured in an assault that the company is then liable for that and subject to fines for not take “all practicable measures to prevent” etc.
      
      If so then send in the orcs to fix that particular piece or regulatory nonsense.

      Security guards have no more rights then any other citizen. That means they cannot touch you or anyone else for that matter.

        Rubbish. Anyone, including security guards have the right to protect property.
        
        Here’s the Crimes Act:
        
        53 Defence of movable property with claim of right
        
        (1) Every one in peaceable possession of any movable thing under a claim of right, and every one acting under his or her authority, is protected from criminal responsibility for defending his or her possession by the use of reasonable force, even against a person entitled by law to possession, if he or she does not strike or do bodily harm to the other person.
        
        Grabbing, pushing, shoving, obstructing a person is allowed. striking (ie hitting them) or hurting them is not allowed.

        Shop staff or security guards can forcibly prevent you leaving the shop only in two kinds of situations:
        
        expensive items – if the things they suspect you of stealing are worth $1,000 or more (a higher-end laptop for example), or
        night time – if it’s between 9.00 pm and 6.00 am (when you’re in an all-night service station for example).
        They also need to have “reasonable and probable grounds” for believing that you’ve stolen the items. A vague suspicion won’t be enough.
        
        In these cases, the shop staff or guard would be carrying out what’s sometimes called a “citizen’s arrest,” and they can use reasonable force to hold you. However, they still don’t have the right to search you or your bag without your consent.
        
        If neither of those situations justifying a citizen’s arrest apply, the shop can ask you to remain but you don’t have to do so – you can simply walk away.

      Tax is theft. We mostly accept this theft on the basis of some social contract whereby society itself benefits from that theft. If it ever becomes clear to the majority that the state does not uphold its end of the social contract the peer-to-peer transactions will happen more frequently. Brazil is a great example of this.

      MCos: Another bush lawyer. Paying a tradie in cash is NOT either illegal or “avoiding tax” on the part of the payer. Whether the tradie declares payments made to him is up to him…if he doesn’t then HE is avoiding tax – in fact he is actively evading it.

        MMA, paying somebody in cash can never be considered, knowingly helping a tradie/business owner etc. to evade tax. For example a shopper paying cash (which is legal tender) for purchases to a shop keeper is a normal business activity. How can that be encouraging a shop keeper to evade tax?
        
        Please note, avoiding tax is legitimate, as tax avoidance is deemed to be minimising the tax liability of the taxpayer through their legitimate business activity. Tax evasion is the non payment of a tax liability that has arisen because of either a tax income stream has arisen, or a transaction attracting GST or other excise has occurred.

        If someone says pay me cash and I’ll knock off the gst and you agree, whatever the law might say is hardly the point.
        On the other hand
        If you pay cash at a restaurant with no such agreement it’s not your lookout what the restauranteur does with the cash, wouldn’t you say?

        I prefer to pay irregular bills in cash. Quick and easy. It’s none of anyone else’s business what I spend my money on, the same as it’s none of my business what happens to the money after it leaves my possession.

  I have seen similar incidents in our local countdown.
  During one of them, I asked the thief if she was going to pay. She suggested that I have carnal relations with various members of my family. I then loudly suggested to her that she was a thief.
  Her response was to ask if I wanted a fight. When I said yes she took off at a rate of knots.
  I have seen the thief a couple of time since, again walking out with some items.
  The problem is endemic according to a golfing colleague who runs a supermarket in another part of town.
  Not good.

    Local Westpac had a feral sitting outside begging – staff indicated to him he should come in – they opened a new customer bay, gave him some cash and he left – nice bank.

      …and there is the warning to anybody purchasing such items, even on Trade Me. Whether you buy the goods, provedence is everything. If the goods were stolen, it doesn’t matter how much you paid for the goods, ownership is still with the party from whom the goods were stolen….

  There is an ongoing epidemic of walk-outs at the Pak ‘N Save in Kaitaia. If I remember correctly what my buddy told me they don’t even bother with security, because the thieves and the security guards are all “whanau”. I don’t know how a business can keep running under those circumstances.

    It probably won’t. The franchisee owner-operator bears the losses, not Foodstuffs. The other option is to hike the prices just short of the opposition to cover the losses (there does not seem to be a Woolworths in Kaitaia anyway).

  Security guards would have special legal rights to detain, cops called and arrest her for theft, and this automatically triggers social services to roll in and remove her kids until she has been assessed for child neglect.

    The Government was granted special powers to certain transit security/revenue staff, so it would be quite appropriate to give limited enforcement powers to registered security guards who pass appropriate NZCA units in security, loss control and the associated legal framework.

So Mr Renney from the CTU is really worried that tax changes for landlords will blow out the tax revenue deficit bigly. “Christmas for landlords” he says.

As he is an actual economist, I am sure he has taken into account the savings from proposed changes in the rental sector. Like investors coming back or not selling up, savings from emergency and social housing if supply increases and risk of suboptimal tenants decreases. And then there are the empty rentals not available to seasonal workers due to Labour’s tenure rules.

Just ECON101 – supply and demand.

  I learnt a long time ago that any ‘economist’ working from the unions is first and foremost a PR mouthpiece for the unions and Labour party.
  
  Also, unlike accountants and other professions, their is no professional qualification for an economist. Once you have an economics degree anyone can claim to be the economist for xyz company / organisation.
  
  And yeah, you don’t need any economics qualifications to understand that increasing costs to suppliers / businesses will lead to increased costs to the consumer, in this case the tenant.

        And there is a vast difference between having a qualification (a piece of paper that says you passed a spot test exam that you crammed for), and being qualified, which means you have the knowledge, experience, and understanding.
        
        Those that are effective in technology and IT, are in the main qualified people who have no pieces of paper (qualification).
        
        A plumber that dropped out of school at 15 and makes $300k per year in his own business, is 20 times smarter than uni graduate with a BA, MA, Phd, but who can’t get a job, or ends up working for a govt dept being an expert in climate change or perhaps a green or Labour MP.
        
        On an adjusted IQ scale, where they test for the ability to apply your knowledge to the challenges of survival and productivity, requiring complex and quantum analysis, and actual work, James Shaw and Chloe Swore Brick, would be hovering around 25-30%.

      Just as there is a professional body for accountants, there is a professional body for economists. It is New Zealand Association of Economists (www.nzae.org.nz), and most of the professions you listed have their own professional bodies.

    When is “eventually”? Eventually we’re all going to die, and so eventually are our children and their children, and eventually the sun’s going to explode and Earth will be incinerated. France, where Voltaire lived, is among several countries where the value of paper money has not returned to its intrinsic value of zero in the 250-odd years since he left us.
    
    You might want to argue that paper money only has a value because of the social convention that says it does. Fine; but if we do get ourselves into a situation where social conventions about what’s valuable don’t hold any more, I would put it to you that gold’s not going to help either

  The financial system is always on the verge of collapse according to those who sell gold. I remember a guy in the states back in 2016 who was predicting the end of the financial system and collapse of the US dollar by May of that year in fact he had written a book which was a guide to navigating the ensuing chaos and which metals to buy and how which retailed at US $ 25.00 payable by PayPal or credit card lol.

    I agree that concern by gold sellers is naked self interest. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real risk ahead though. Fiat money is a Ponzi scheme, and CBDCs are being positioned as the way out. There will be no better way to enslave humanity than have CBDCs achieve critical mass.

      Of course no one has a crystal ball – we’re all ‘reading tea leaves’ of some sort and trying to figure out “what’s next??”
      For me, having some physical gold seems to make some sense. It is the only money that has survived 5,000 years.
      The current global debt can not be paid back – it is now mathematically impossible because it is so big. And it is growing faster than at any other point in history. So we are either seeing something that has never happened before in history (exploding credit/money printing with no collapse) – or we are going to see history repeat itself whereby reality hits a brick wall.

    Governments really, really don’t like citizens storing wealth in assets they can’t control – gold being one of them. The increasing regulation (or attempted regulation of) cryptocurrencies like BTC is another indicator.
    
    And if they can’t control, they simply seize the asset as US government did in 1933 when Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, which made gold ownership–both in coins and in bars–illegal for all Americans and punishable by up to ten years in prison. Anyone caught with gold would also have to pay a fine of twice the amount of gold that was not turned over to the Federal Reserve in exchange for paper money.

  2) Now you have gold, and the world has turned pear shaped … how are you going to use your gold? Do you think you can rock up to the local Four Square and pay with it? Are you going to carry some scales and shave off just the right amount? And what’s to stop them stealing your gold?

  1. Retrieving our tax money from corrupt organisations and politicians. The National Party is hiring more tax auditors, they should start those auditors investigating government spending over the last 6 years. Retrurn on investment will be much greater!

    They were all marketing stunts. Millions upon millions of expenses, all for marketing Labour, but no actual doing.
    
    Light rail in Mount Roskill was supposed to be finished by 2020, but in 2023 not even started. Not one peg in the ground, not even a spade of earth turned. Millions upon million spent. So a pure marketing exercise.
    
    And all those communication jobs they created, in govt, and in just about every state owned enterprise. All those Maori name changes. All marketing to sell an agenda.
    
    And then the Covid / Vaccine fiasco.
    
    If there had been no Covid theatre, and no stories to print, advertising revenue would have slumped.
    
    I’m revising that figure of one billion. Upon reflection, total ‘marketing spend’, so a media expense, by Labour, is probably in the tens of billions.

  Case in point, AM Show this morning where Willy Jackson was able to deflect any suggestion of government involvement in broadcasting after the PIJF, the AM crew denying they had been bribed, then immediately afterwards challenged Nicola Willis for potentially not delivering on an election promise regarding tax relief and cost of living.
  
  I recall when the same happened after the last two elections that Ardern woman simply stated that those promises were based on what Labour would have done if they were alone in government, but now they’re in a coalition they can’t be held to everything they had promised.
  No challenge, no response, just let her get away with it.

  I’ve always thought the law change to annual WOF for cars 2000 and newer was flawed for not being defined by age and odometer distance since last WOF.
  Think about this every time you see a blown tail light, and wonder what else is wrong.
  I’d also like to see emmissions testing for NOx and hydrocarbons. We’re the only 1st world country that doesn’t.

    I can see your point, but it’s not quite as cut and dried as that IMHO.
    Time and lack of use can cause a car to deteriorate too.
    I have a ‘spare’ car that I use for towing, (About to sell it now) and I haven’t used it for months. It’s now in an unwarrantable condition due to just sitting around doing nothing. Nothing major to fix, but it definitely needs to be sorted before it’s roadworthy again.

    Benedict, I own 3 classic cars. One is 52 years old, the other two are well past 20. They are each driven 1000 kms per year if they’re lucky, and they’re immaculately maintained. Do you think they need to be checked every 6 months?
    
    These three vehicles are on a joint low-mileage classic car insurance policy with certain conditions that must be met, but the cost is kept low. Some equivalent scheme should be realised for WOFs for cars such as mine, to differentiate them from old, worn out bangers with bald tyres.
    
    In fact, the New Zealand Federation of Motoring Clubs has been pushing for 12 month WOFs/COFs for qualifying vehicles.

A second Blood Clot death of a young woman “from the pill”.

Coincidentally it is in the same month, Sept 2021as the first clot death of a young 17 yr old Isabella.

But the media report deliberately omits the relevant question. What happened in Sept 2021 that was different? Was she vaccinated and when?

The whole article doesn’t mention if she was vaccinated. So we don’t know if the coroner even considered this as a factor. The headline for both deaths is the Pill caused it and they also blame a clotting gene mutation. How unusual to have 2 extremely rare contraceptive deaths in one month.

I accept that the contraceptive pill can cause blood clots.
I accept that the two had a clotting mutation.

But the vax also caused clots. And that was what changed in September in NZ.

The vaccine is ignored in todays story. Maybe the vaccine didn’t cause it alone. Maybe it was contributory. Maybe it didn’t cause it at all. But without the relevant info we can not be sure.

But the media withholding the information creates more distrust.

The media also waited 2 years to report the Coroners findings. They did not report these deaths in September 2021 when they happened, or their vax status so people could make their own informed decisions about a new experimental drug.

. Never again. I honestly no longer trust any of them.

Was she bloody vaccinated. Tell us the TRUTH!

    Ghost – while there is a proven, huge increase in excess all cause mortality and NOBODY is checking to see if there is any potential connection to the jabs, then this is a valid question.
    
    It is simply impossible that every single ‘sudden death’ in the alarming numbers we’re seeing are just a coincidence. They have only happened since the rollout of this experimental garbage.
    
    There is way more than enough correlation to warrant an immediate cessation of the jabbing programme while the much needed, broad ranging, thorough inquiry is held.
    
    Read my post above about the law changes re coroners that look specifically designed to hide such deaths.
    
    There are many, many more deaths that are as a result of these jabs than we are led to believe. Most in the medical field won’t go near it, they know if they do they will likely be complicit in the deaths of many people who should still be alive.

        Within a couple of years we should have a definitive answer as to whether or not the jabs are implicated. Hint. They will be without a shadow of a doubt.
        
        I presume your outrage is genuine, but you’re wrong. This is one of the biggest health related disasters in history and it is being deliberately ignored and actively covered up.

        I have a very good friend diagnosed terminal with pancreatic cancer. He never wanted the jab. Was forced to due to his business being in trouble.

        No, it has never been an easy conversation.         I know a number of people who are currently suffering from medical issues who are convinced it is ‘long covid’. They can’t possibly consider it might be vaccine injury, because that would mean admitting they made a mistake.
        
        Until a very thorough inquiry is carried out there will always be speculation. Recording vaccine status against hospitalisations and deaths should quickly reveal the truth.
        
        And that means real vaccine status. As in, you are vaccinated if you ever had even ONE shot of this experiment. Because even ONE shot will have ongoing implications.
        
        Not ‘two weeks after your second dose’ or not vaccinated because you didn’t get your booster. Simple.

    Divya ‘had had her third booster vaccine’ 4 days prior to her massive heart attack. Being 25 Jan 2022 that was presumably her 3rd dose of vaccine. She had to take the next day off work because she felt unwell and complained of pain in the L side of her neck and shoulder (symptoms consistent with a heart attack). She worked a night shift on 28 Jan then slept before waking later that afternoon and experiencing dizziness and chest pains. Soon after she suffered a cardiac arrest.
    
    It is important to note that prior to the deployment of the Pfizer injection it was EXTREMELY RARE for healthy young women to suffer heart attacks, and even those with co-morbidities such as obesity, diabetes or smoking would be highly unlikely to have a heart attack at the young age of 31.
    
    However, the pathologist apparently told the coroner her death was most likely related to an ‘underlying weakness of the coronary arteries’. Without seeing the pathologist’s report, it is difficult to know what this actually means. Were they aneurysmal, had they ruptured, was there actually anything abnormal detected, or was this just a ‘diagnosis’ used to fill in the paperwork.
    
    The coroner, Luella Dunn, (spelling as per Herald article, apologies if incorrect) a lawyer, not a doctor, advised that the pathologist found no evidence to suggest the vaccine contributed in any way to her death. What evidence exactly was the pathologist looking for? Were any tissues stained for spike protein, was there vascular inflammation, blood clots, myocarditis? We have been unable to get a clear, or even any sort of answer, to this question from our authorities. What if they are not actually looking for anything? After all, if you don’t look, you won’t find

      The other problem is that by not investigating post-vaxx deaths properly or at all, it further disadvantages the families of the deceased.
      
      Because, if proper pathological investigation complete with myocardial and other histology shows that the cause of death was in fact related to the vaccine, there is a financial benefit under ACC to the survivors of the deceased – even if that of course doesn’t make up for the loss. But it does help especially if there are minor children, or the surviving partner is unemployed. So by changing the rules for coroners, the Labour Government wilfully, deliberately and negligently – I would further add criminally – disadvantaged the loved ones and dependents of the deceased.

      The destruction of trust in our health systems is one of the most damning aspects of all this. Many more will due due to avoiding the system. I’m one who has no interest in going to my medical centre.
      
      Especially since finding out that last time I went to get my tetanus shot updated, I was jabbed for two other things at the same time. Diphtheria and Pertussis. Not saying I wouldn’t have had it, but nobody told me this was happening. That’s NOT informed consent.

      You will all remember the threatening letters issued by the NZ Medical Council and the NZ Medical Association advising the serious consequences right up to losing their career, for any doctors who spoke against the pro-vaxx narrative.

    My daughter had one at the same time, one of my grandmothers died of pulmonary embolism, both of her daughters died of strokes. They were all the children she had.
    All blood clots of one sort or another.
    None could be pinned on covid vaccines, but I’m sure if it had happened in recent times someone would try to make the connection

    BY – yes I had a friend who developed serious DVT on a flight from Europe, luckily the outcome was positive.
    My point is still the same, the jabs damage the innate immune system. This may well be a contributory factor in any death. Just as for many, heart failure was cause of death but covid contributed to the heart failure due to respiratory illness. But these were ALL listed as covid deaths.
    
    Of course there were the extreme cases of those who died of gunshot wounds put down as covid deaths.
    
    All of this uncertainty and angst is a direct result of the horrific and moronic war that was waged on the whole planet due to a ‘pandemic’ that was not remotely exceptional.
    Dismissing the possibility that the jabs might be causing problems isn’t the solution, we need total transparency on this subject or we will never rebuild any trust.

      On my first visit to Puhinui Station, I was still wading through bold type Maori first, English second, trying to find where I wanted to go on the lift when others pressed the up button.
      
      While waiting for friends, I read the escalator instructions: three lines of incomprehensible Maori followed by two lines of comprehensible English telling me not take a pram (waka pepe in the Maori text) or a scooter (kikuta) or a bicycle (pahikara) on the elevator.
      
      Not a big deal, especially since you need to read these notices only once, but at rush hour maybe a problem, especially for tourists – about eight or so backpackers came through while I was waiting.
      
      But a notice’s function is quick and clear communication, not language teaching.

    I don’t think that the reason for renaming the Kotahi Canoe is saving lives but rather reducing confusion.
    
    On the contrary, it is well known that confusing road signs lead to accidents and deaths especially with overseas visitors.
    
    In one international study, New Zealand was singled out as having a very high accident / death rate due to poor signage, and that was before the onslaught of Maori signage in the last 6 years.
    
    And Kotahi Canoe, or New Zealand Transport Agency as it was known back then, are aware of that study because they were asked to respond, and did respond. Their reasons for the high death rate, although fluffed up, mostly track back to confusing signage.

      In the good old days it was the Roading Division of the MOW. The design office was in the Vogel Building on Aitken St and I worked there c1969
      The whole fourteen storeys plus a couple of basements was occupied by the MOW.
      A friend of mine worked in the architectural office and spent his time doing nothing. So he left
      Unfortunately he was an assisted immigrant from the UK and was bonded for five years or whatever and the Works wanted their money back. He refused to pay so they took him to court.
      There was a two page spread in the Truth, which loved that sort of thing. In his defence he said he was employed as an architect, but he was given no work and he produced an array of witnesses who swore they also worked in the office and were given no work.
      Nevertheless he lost and was ordered to pay back the bond, which he never did.
      Understandable the witnesses dared not show their faces in that office again!

  Do you really think that civilians in any similar situation have the ability, let alone the desire to identify the ‘terrorists’ and hand them over to the Israeli authorities? Have you seen what happens to civilians in these situations if they are deemed ‘collaborators’?
  
  Many may oppose Hamas, but they have zero chance of speaking out and living for long.

    If you weren’t with them then you were against them.

      imalwaysright – yup, that was one positive. There was stuff all crime, certainly burglaries and sexual type assaults were almost non existent.
      
      But the idea that some here have that the civilians of Gaza are responsible and therefore getting what they deserve, is lacking empathy off the scale.
      
      Don’t know what part of the city you were in, but most people I knew were simply interested in getting through the day, feeding the family and avoiding trouble.

A question about the $55 Million Dollar Handout to certain so called Mainstream Media Outlets in NZ by Ardern/Hipkins Government .
When I heard Stephen Joyce talking to the holier than thou Hoskins saying National would not dream of handing out any money to NZs Mainstream Media .That comment said plenty .
Would be interesting to find out what News Outlet got the type of handout in dollar amount .
Will we ever know if say Hoskins employer NZME got too much or not enough,or say some of the biased proven Print news/ TV outlets were almost Bankrupt and desperate to remain in business .
Another question has to be ?Perhaps a list of media beneficiaries who got the big dollars to control the news, allegedly in a biased way, could or show who was caught swimming naked when the tide turned and NZs woke to the fact that half the lies NZs Mainstream Media conveyed were not true and voted Accordingly.

      Okay. Fair enough. As I’ve said a couple of times previously, I use a desk top computer. But, this would not have been the first time oldpark has mentioned Hosking in a comment, so, if he is using an iPad, he would know to force the spelling of Hosking.
      
      I’ve just experimented on my smart phone. When I get to the ‘n’ of ‘Hoskin’, the alternatives at that point are ‘Hosking’ and ‘Hoskins’. As soon as I enter the ‘s’, to spell ‘Hoskins’, the alternatives become ‘Hosking’ and ‘Hopkins’. When I enter a space to continue, ‘Hoskins’ stays as Hoskins.
      
      And, when I go (x-ing) back and enter the ‘g’, to spell ‘Hosking’, the alternatives become ‘Hoskins’ and ‘Hosting’. When I enter a space to continue, ‘Hosking’ stays as Hosking.
      
      So, no, I don’t buy it. oldpark knew exactly what he was doing, which he did for his own silly reasons. Hopefully, now that he has been called out, he will take care in future to spell people’s names correctly, including the names of people he happens to be disagreeing with at any given time, and for any reason.

It seems the Left community and the media are determined to treat the new government as a brief illegitimate interregnum unjustly foisted on ‘decent’ woke Kiwi’s by the vagaries of MMP and the voting patterns of a group of ‘ungrateful’ and ‘selfish’ people. Meanwhile the (in their eyes) rightful PM Chris Hipkins will be provided a platform to deliver a constant critical running commentary on the ‘gang of thugs’ while awaiting his pre-ordained and inevitable return to power in 3 years time.
At the moment we are seeing the media throwing a constant barrage of metaphorical rotten tomatoes at the hated (by the Left apparatus) new government. I can’t help thinking that this looks very much like Trump’s election in 2016 and the fraught term of office that followed, with daily hysteria in the media being the most notable feature.
This is going to get very tiresome, very soon.

    There seems little doubt – based upon both theoretical speculation and real-world medical monitoring studies – that constant paranoid negativity contributes to actual and significant pathological illness of the mind. These nattering nabobs of negativity are not going to find and settle in a steady state, they are just gonna spiral further down. I will take no delight in that, although it won’t bother me much either because they were warned, as all of our mothers warned us: “okay, even if you didn’t start it, you’re going to finish it now”.

Will be very interesting to follow the outcome of this one.

Yonder Hipkins is, of course, completely quiet on his erstwhile Cabinet buddy, Willie Jackson, threatening revolution because the election didn’t go his way.

Curious, too, that Hipkins dismissed all of Jackson’s pre-election ‘hijinks’ witb a ‘oh, that’s just Willie’ conversation-stopper. Why no similar ‘Oh everyone knows Winston’s ploys’ rejoinder now, Chipster?

Instead we get a “Luxton can’t control him’ aside … totally forgetting all the times he, Chippie, was given the run around by team members HE couldn’t control, heh.

About the PIJF issue that has blown up (eg by some aggressively defensive MSM journos and Winston, well being Winston).

One of the most controversial/radical/divisive aspects of the PIJF (which the MSM journos are ignoring) is that the accompanying “Te Tiriti Framework for News Media” documents (there are two of them).

To quote the 8 paged “Ti Tiriti Framework” it states on page 4:

Rationale
As tangata whenua o Aotearoa, Māori have never ceded sovereignty to Britain or any other State. He Whakaputanga/Declaration of Independence (1835) and te Tiriti o Waitangi (1840) asserted and continue to assert Māori sovereignty, and were signed by hapū and the Crown.

This is the radical/activist reinterpretation of the ToW, which now permeates eg Education, the (Labour) Govt & Public Service and now the Judiciary, that Māori have never ceded sovereignty. Which is BS and totally against the evidence of the time (1840) whereby Maori Chiefs debated the fact that they will be losing sovereignty.

To also highlight the radical/activist “Ti Tiriti Framework” dis-information, it raises the Declaration of Independence (1835). Now this Declaration had a specific purpose (eg to allow Maori to trade with NSW and IIRC to counter potential French claims to NZ) and was only signed by some Northland tribes. It was then surpassed by tie 1840 ToW. For the “Ti Tiriti Framework” to be ignorant of the background and to deceive modern day NZers is despicable. It needs to be scrapped.

Now the rest of the quoted page 4 paragraph then quotes “institutional racism” revisionist bullshit (to save time I won’t expand further but have a read).

The three sections of the ToW were generally clear in an overall sense (despite some translation peculiarities).

Article One: in Māori it gave Queen Victoria governance over the land, while in English it gave her sovereignty over the land – a stronger term.

Article Two: Te tiriti guaranteed chiefs ‘te tino rangatiratanga’ – chieftainship over their lands, villages and treasured things. It also gave the Crown the right to deal with Māori in buying land. The English-language treaty gave chiefs ‘exclusive and undisturbed possession’ of lands, forests, fisheries and other property. It also gave the Crown an exclusive right to deal with Māori over buying land.

Article Three: both versions gave Māori the queen’s protection and the rights of British subjects.

  It’s worth noting that Willy Jackson has said that the Treaty requirements were added by NZ on Air who were administering it so it’s entirely possible that it was done this way to hide the true intent from Winston (i.e. Labour told NZ on Air to add it at their end for plausible deniability), just like how they hid He Pua Pua.

Bumped into an old mate last week after the coalition agreements came out. She admitted to voting left but said she was really happy with the three way coalition and many of the things they are reversing. She agreed that the media are behaving disgustingly.

I wonder how many lefties feel the same way – couldn’t bring themselves to vote centre or centre right, but when pushed admit they are happy with the election result.

        This time he’s changed tack and gone after the media, but you can be sure he’ll have his eye on Act & the Nats down the track.

  It’s amazing how modern woke buy into bullshit invented changes in accent and pronunciation. The language and place names were phonetically recorded in the 1800’s, and there was no weird agenda to change f’s into wh’s or any of the other recently invented malarky.
  
  It is perfectly clear that the whole name and pronunciation change enterprise is nothing more than tedious efforts by insecure teens to make their parents jump through hoops – exercising power in pushing others around for no reason other than massaging their egos + busy work for useless underemployed SJWs.       Macrons indicate a lengthened vowel sound. the difference between ‘a’ in Māori and ‘a’ in haka, for instance.

        Wikipedia says sometimes a “trema” is used in NZ Maori when a macron “isn’t available”.

    That is a bit worrying. I had two shots so I could get the silly passport. No reactions.
    The thing is I may have had Covid and not even known. It would have given me natural immunity if so. Then the vaccines would have destroyed my natural immunity.
    Fast forward six months and I did have a positive test. I did not feel unwell, asymptomatic, only took it because my daughter tested positive.
    So I do wonder about the future.
    I have natural immunity for many things you get as a kid. Chickenpox, measles, all of it. Also the important vaccines, polio, tetanus, whooping cough, etc.
    Some there was no vaccine back then. We also lived in the sticks, way out the back of Te Kowhai. Can’t go running to the Doctor every time someone sniffs.

The new Finance Minister Nicola Willis has slammed the previous Labour Government for leaving the books with “nasty financial surprises” that National will have to clean up.

The new Government was sworn in at a ceremony at Government House on Monday and Willis has since received briefings from Treasury officials about the state of the country’s books.

  She is not very specific. She cites the government committing to policies without funding them. Yes, and these were all listed in the PREFU as specific fiscal risks.
  
  I know I am a broken record on this. If she uncovers a serious fiscal commitment that was not disclosed, I will be the first to admit I was wrong. It would mean that Grant Robertson deliberately broke the law.

  Yes BUT it’s not as simple as The government bribing the journos with the PIJF. It is corrupt and it is bribery but of a more sophisticated form that slipping a writer cash to run a puff piece on your party. It runs along the lines of the famous American political machines like the old school Tamaney hall best summarized as “jobs for the boys”. Positions on the government payroll and fat contracts are made available but only to those who support the correct faction. The voters in those ‘machine” run cities could vote however they liked but if they went the wrong way they got frozen out the next time goodies were distributed.

Either that, or allow concealed-carry for on duty qualified medical staff.

  I have seen it with runners at Countdown. Staff can’t stop the thief, neither can security. A young Maori guy chased the runner but lost him. He must have removed his hat and jacket.

      They can be issued Tasers and the video will show if the tasee was in the wrong. If a thief, jailtime. If not a thief, compensation time.

        A jailed thief doesn’t do any thieving, freeing up police to catch more criminals, and leading to a virtuous cycle of less crime and greater deterrence as there is less chance of getting away with it.
        
        Won’t take much change in sentencing practices to have major impact over the next few years, though jailed population will obviously grow.
        
        Lets figure out ways of making jail a lot cheaper. I suggest putting jailing of long term prisoners out to tender by third world countries – make use of their lower labour costs.

      Arm them, with training of course. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. NZ needs to grow up.
      Armed Police/Security that are trained. I have talked with many Police and Security guys in Hawaii and Alaska. In Alaska guns are everywhere but mostly unseen. At out hast families houses they had about 5 in each house. I only knew where one was, a pump action 12G, loaded.
      Up there in Alaska they think an unloaded gun is like trying to put year seat belt on when you know you are crashing.
      Hawaiian Cop said that Kiwis might find Police armed could be intimidating. To me that is only if you have done something wrong. I asked for his photo, then asked him to move his hand so the firearm was in the shot.

      Patrons are physically ejected from bars in New Zealand every weekend, so why aren’t we seeing a tidal wave of prosecutions against bouncers? It usually only occurs when the bouncer has been overly heavy-handed resulting in injury to the ejected party.

      Clearly breaking someone’s arm or jaw is overstepping the mark and could land you on the wrong end of an assault charge.
      
      But firmly guiding a person out of a pub is perfectly fine.
      
      I did a bit of bouncing during my university years (in South Africa). I never hit anyone. I did grab a few arms/shoulders and such and blocked a few blows. However at over 6ft 5 most people look at me for a few seconds and most pissed guys can figure out their odds.
      
      What seems to be limiting the actions of staff the most is not the law, but company policy.
      
      In other words the companies tell their security staff not to intervene because they are worried about the situation escalating and potentially turning into an ugly incident that might cost them tens or hundreds of thousands in court costs etc.

        A guard with a German Shepherd would settle down most thugs and rowdies.

      Bouncers have delegated authority from the establishment owners to remove willful trespasses from the premises…Likewise with any property owner or their agent. Everyone has a right to come onto you property but be comes a trespasser when asked to leave and refuses to. That trespasser becomes a wilful trespasser after failing to leave after a warning to do so and can be legally removed. Any resistance to their physical removal is an assault on the property owner/agent.

    Perhaps a minor amendment to law regarding citizens arrest to make it less dangerous to use (opens arresting person up to a lot of potential legal jeopardy) for the purposes of theft prevention by retail workers and assisting members of public.

As much as I would like to see the previous Prime Minister, the previous Minister of Health, the previous Chief Medical Officer, and the head of the New Zealand medical profession all held to account for the deaths and damage they directly caused by lockdowns and vaccine mandates – realistically there is almost no chance of any of those people being held to legal account.

That said, and I’d like to be hugely wrong on this next scenario; a more insidious and underappreciated, but coming close to orders-of-magnitude-higher death and morbidity toll is likely to arise due to the hyperinflation which is ‘around the corner’.

Trying to avoid a TL:DR.

The Roman Empire crashed spectacularly due to failure to keep outgoings matched to incomings. We are doing the same thing, less dramatically. The Roman emperors trying to delay disaster until the end of their term / life (sometimes the same thing) resulted to debasing the currency, clipping the coinage, changing the composition, even literally making them smaller. Our equivalent of this policy is Robertson vastly and suddenly expanding the supply of digital and then printed money.

But whether you clip and debase silver coins or print more fancily-inked paper, the result is the same; the quantity of money increases without any matching income or production; therefore we get inflation, therefore we get increases in cost of living, therefore we get demands to get paid more, therefore we circulate more fiat / digital currency, via keystrokes in Orr’s office. And around and around we go until one day, the music stops, the tide goes out, and we see who’s been swimming naked.

Are we seeing anything different going on in New Zealand and the world, from what the Romans and the Germans experienced? I’d say we are not. It’s useful to read the lived experience of those who for example survived the Weimar Republic – and more recently, the Zimbabwean inflation, the Venezuelan inflation, the Argentinian inflation, the Greek inflation, inflation after the fall of the USSR and so forth; not because there can be a realistic expectation that only we in the 21st century are smart enough to stave off such disaster, but so that we know how to best prepare for our families.

    Musing further there is one other thing that I have turned to in recent years: aligning future expectations more closely to sensible levels.
    
    For example, decades ago, Her Majesty’s drill sergeants educated me quite forcefully in the minimum amount of stuff I needed to survive and thrive. At that time, I could carry everything I needed in one pack. Over the years I tended to forget that, and started accumulating more and more. After uni the move to my first job could be still be accomplished in a (albeit somewhat crammed) Austin Mini – the Issigonis design, not the Beemer-boomer version. Skip forward to marrying and having # 1 baby, and the first house move was with a van with a trailer. Skip forward 30 years, a container was necessary…
    
    But what do we need versus what do we want to have? I got a quite quick re-education on what the basics are when I got locked out of coming home by Labour because of the Chinese flu while overseas for work, became of course an overstayer, and got used to sleeping and living in a car in Eastern Europe. Quite quickly the essentials were, easily defined, and the nice to haves basically unnecessary. (Over about an eight month period the thing that I really would not have wanted to lack access to was modern dental care, but fortunately, paying the dentist cash was still an option). If things really do go completely down the gurgle, I hope I can quickly reclaim that attitude and walk away from everything that isn’t family and isn’t portable. Although staying put and bartering with skills and stores and the occasional gold Kiwi coin could be preferred, (a) things may not turn out that way and (b) I’m way too old and decrepit to star in my own episode of Doomsday Prepper: the Grumpy Geezer Returns. 🙂

A great investor dies …

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s right-hand man in Berkshire Hathaway, has died at 99.

Munger, says the “Wall Street Journal,” talked Buffett into buying See’s Candy Shops at three times their net worth and they provided $US2 billion in net profit for Berkshire over two decades.

He also led Buffett into buying into the Chinese electric-car and battery firm, BYD, and later selling down at a huge gain.

Munger worked in Buffett’s grandfather’s grocery store as a boy. After war service he became a lawyer.

Munger lost an eye in bungled cataract surgery 45 years ago, and in video of Buffett’s annual meetings he is seen beside Buffett, with thick glasses and one of his eyes a glass replacement.

The “WSJ” quotes a couple of Munger’s quips at shareholder meetings:

“… I would rather throw a viper down my shirtfront than hire a compensation consultant.”

And, asked about investing in Internet companies:

  In one chat Warren Buffet tells a joke about the two of them being kidnapped by Red terrorists

A man is in the court news today for making a fraudulent insurance claim over a “stolen” vehicle.

Despite being convicted, his lawyer applied for a discharge without conviction, saying “convictions would have a significant impact on [his] business and his ability to obtain insurance and finance in future.”

It there anything defence lawyers won’t try to pull now? I mean, the guy tried to defraud his insurance for over $70,000 and his lawyer is complaining it might be harder for him to get insurance in the future!!??

        It is not as easy as you think. At the minimum Mitchell would have to publicly state he has no confidence in the Commissioner and can see no way he could work with him. Said as a Minister, not as Opposition spokesman. He would then have to answer numerous questions in Parliament. A major distraction for the government in general.
        Much more appropriate to try and work with the Commissioner.

    Only the Guv can do that on the advice of the PM. And the PM would generally seek advice on this from the Police Minister. However there are indirect methods such as when Helen Clark informally dispatched a Police Commissioner.

  I cannot remember a Minister of Police who did not act as an advocate for the police and close ranks with police as a matter of course.
  
  I’ve never liked that tendency which is the proper function of the NZ Police Association.
  
  The Minister should remain apart and judge the performance of the police objectively so that when action needs to be taken it can be done without fear or favour.

Sure, they’ve got an agenda but Willis didn’t do herself any favours here. She could have agreed with Peters or simply could have told them to talk to Peters because he was the one being quoted.

Reminds me of the interview Sean Plunket did with Willis before the election in which he raised the subject of men in women’s sports and men in women’s changing rooms. Willis waffled on and finally, when asked how she would feel about her daughters sharing a changing room with a man, she said since that had never happened to her she had no opinion:

Irony is Willis was also being asked there to comment on what Peters had said, and she opined, “Well, we’ll see how that all comes to pass.”

Come to pass that it’s now a coalition policy: “Ensure publicly funded sporting bodies support fair competition that is not compromised by rules relating to gender.”

The upshot of all of this is that the media and political activists are never going to relent. You can’t make friends with them in the same way that you can’t hug a tiger. Willis needs a bit more Thatcher and less Ardern in her demeanour. Luxon is facing the same problem. These guys better wake up, and fast, and start punching back hard by refusing to indulge in fringe issues, putting interviewers in their place and talk about nothing but policy.

It also might help the likes of Willis if you can actually take a principled stand and agree that men should not be in the same changing rooms as girls and that the PIJF required funding recipients to adhere to the Treaty principles as a condition of that funding.

Simply telling the truth is usually the best way forward.

  The Leftist media will try to entrap her and pin the economic mess on the new government rather than on the real culprits, Ardern-Hipkins-Robertson-RBNZ with their:
  
  – Continuing, unadjusted imports surge as they both shut down the economy for Covid and financed this by printing tens of billions of dollars through bond issues. Demand continued from the Covid idle.
  
  – Bias, reinforced by the Greens, against agriculture, our main export income earner. (In fact, it’s what NZ survives by.)
  
  – Pumping billions into the economy through spending on consultants and waste.
  
  Nicola Willis will be a one-term Finance Minister unless she goes bulldog when she talks to the bloc of State-owned and State-subsidised media. Otherwise they’ll chew her and spit her out.

    I believe that is true. On the other hand, without Muldoon, we wouldn’t have had any of the Think Big projects that have kept our country energy-functional lo! these many years.
    
    It was a staggeringly successful plan when inflation was twice as high as now, mortgage rates were over 20% and the economy was experiencing its worst recession in decades – “Think Big” had its beginnings in the international oil shocks of the 1970s. Oil prices increased 400% from 1973, and New Zealand was particularly hard-hit. Muldoon got CNG and LPG up and running, and built the Marsden Point refinery. That’s pretty good for someone who was allegedly half-cut a lot of the time, not so?
    
    And now what do we have? Complete and total dependence on dirty Indonesian coal and overseas tankers arriving on time every <2 weeks or we suddenly can't drive or fly anywhere any more.
    
    So Cossie – I'd rather have Muldoon in charge than Whanau or Ardern in charge.
