Newshub said yesterday that Winston Peters claim that the media were bribed by the $55m Public interest journalism fund is false.

But wasn’t it true that they took PIJF money which required them to take the view that the Treaty of Waitangi is a partnership?

And aren’t the news presenters editorialising when they say Peters is speaking falsely? Newshub “journalists” are like students making their own homework. They give themselves an A plus when many of us might give them an F.

Suffice to say that the YouTube comments are turned off. Can’t have the public saying what they think of the media’s bias over the last 6 years can we?

    Chuk its not the bribe that’s still working its the shame of taking it. They know that the majority of NZs see them as corrupted and accepting of bribes but they are going to try the “clutched pearls, devastated you could even think that of us” approach. What you are actually witnessing in real time is a media beginning to realise that the gigs up and the public have seen behind the curtain. I expect they’ll become far more hysterical before it truly dawns on them that the ideology that they hitched their wagons to has been squarely rejected by the majority of this fair nations population and is never coming back.

  This could be interpreted as attempting to use the media to influence public opinion on Covid?

    On page 33 the goals of the PIJF are listed which includes:
    2. Provide accurate, accountable and fair coverage that reflects and empowers all sectors of the community, upholding the public’s right to know.
    3. Actively promote the principles of Partnership, Participation and Active Protection under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, acknowledging Māori as a Te Tiriti partner.
    
    For starters providing accurate, accountable and fair coverage isn’t what the MSM are good at.

      John Stuart Mill Great UK Philosopher/MP (worth a read on his history). some extracts on freedom of speech.
      
      Mill outlines the benefits of “searching for and discovering the truth” as a way to further knowledge. He argued that even if an opinion is false, the truth can be better understood by refuting the error.
      And as most opinions are neither completely true nor completely false, he points out that allowing free expression allows the airing of competing views as a way to preserve partial truth in various opinions.
      Worried about minority views being suppressed, he argued in support of freedom of speech on political grounds, stating that it is a critical component for a representative government to have to empower debate over public policy.
      
      He repeatedly said that eccentricity was preferable to uniformity and stagnation.

    The media were absolutely used, not just to influence public opinion, but to mould it and shape it, to totally control it.

      I can’t see why they felt that they needed to bribe journalists to push the Labour Government agenda. The journalists of today all push the correct line without any need to pay them.
      It reminds me of the days of my youth in the 1960s. The attitude could be summed up by the line. Why would you pay a prostitute when there are thousands of willing amateurs?

  It doesn’t even matter whether there were explicit conditions.
  
  A large part of the media’s job is to report on what the government is doing. If you find out an author or producer has handed loads of cash to a book or film reviewer, you assume bribery without necessarily expecting to find written instructions.
  
  It is inherently wrong for journalists to take money from the people they are reporting on.

  The PIJF is not a bribe as they are free to criticize government policy if they disagree. As it happens they did not disagree with anything the Labour government did.
  
  To prove how the PIJF does not give the government have undue influence on the media, the media have launched a comprehensive campaign of vitriolic criticism against the current government.

  There are approximately 1600 journalists in NZ. Let’s assume half of those were beneficiaries of that $55M , err, non-bribe.
  That would be $69k each.
  Naah, don’t be silly, nobody would change what they are saying for $69k.
  
  The worst part is that instead of just keeping quiet they think they can gaslight everyone. They’ve been doing that for so long they do it brazenly.

    The real money was in the government propaganda disguised as advertising.
    
    Harvey Norman was the biggest advertiser with a spend just shy of $70 million pa.
    The government nearly doubled that spend.
    
    Remember the hypnotic
    covid messages on every 7 minutes .
    They were all charged at retail rates. The regime couldn’t get money into the media fast enough .
    A more realistic figure would be about $380 million.
    
    An absolute bargain .

      I didn’t realize it was that much. If the PIJF is gone in a mini-budget, and the government ad buy slows to a trickle; watch Stuff go down the gurgler by June. they sold for $1 last time. The time before it was millions. They will get a Christmas ad spend, then little over the silly season. Then some back to school, and Easter. By then their books will look pretty grim.

  As I suspected the so called Public Service has embarked on a campaign of Fiscal Sabotage. They are taking steps to sabotage the incoming Governments policies and impose huge costs on the reforms. They will have employed many in roles that will now be disestablished and in Departments like 3 Waters that will be disestablished. But they will have ensured that those employed will be on gold plated contracts they will require being paid out in full. The Labour aresholes will have encouraged CEOs and senior management to go on a hiring spree ( think that prick Cullen we spent it all”) The incoming Ministers should demand all new roles established in the past 6 to 9 months be published with the salary and other benefits so tax payers can see the true costs and the damage that has been done.

Shane Jones has slammed the use of te reo Māori in the public sector, defending the incoming government’s plan to change the names of some major agencies.
The New Zealand First deputy leader is set to become a Cabinet minister when the new government is sworn in today.
Among NZ First’s wins from coalition negotiations were an agreement the coalition will ensure all public service departments have their primary name in English, except for those specifically related to Māori.

It is not just sufficient to change a few department names – it is the inappropriate deeply embedded use of Maori language (and expressed religious views) throughout department communications, reports and probably attitude now and thinking.

Consider a 402 page report that may have been about 200 pages without the Maori misappropriation –

This comes after the Climate Commission issued “Ināia tonu nei: a low emissions future for Aotearoa” which employs a vast cultural misappropriation of te reo Māori to say –

We recognise the power of being connected to each other, having an ethic of care, respect in the way we progress, and taking care of things for ourselves and our mokopuna.
This work is led by science and considers the impact that climate action will have on the people of Aotearoa … We have worked in partnership with Iwi/Māori to develop our advice and incorporate te ao Māori into our mahi. It is critical government work with Iwi/Māori to develop and implement plans and policies, especially where impacts on, and opportunities for, Iwi/Māori are likely.

Now, that it seems the Commission has made mistakes, how much does their cultural misappropriation smear Te Ao Maori ?

But then should there be any mention of Te Ao Maori in this 402 page volume, since New Zealand Government is supposedly secular and no mention is made of other religious worldviews – like, an Islamic worldview for instance?

    I disagree. Shane Jones speaks the language. He is quite entitled to take his oath of office in the Maori language.
    
    What he objects to is woke government agencies appropriating the language and making it difficult for English speakers to understand communications from the government.

      If someone wants to speak te Reo, let them. But if that person wants to communicate with me, it needs to be in English.
      
      Given government departments are servants of the public, they need to communicate in a way that maximises their reach. And that is in English

        Yes. I have objected to what has happened with government agencies and the Maori language. However I have never demonised the Maori language and good on people who want to learn it. If someone wants to use the Maori language in dealing with the government, they will be accommodated.
        
        You can’t force people to learn a language by demanding that they do so. That simply makes people angry. It can backfire by making many hostile to the use of the Maori language in any setting.

    He is fluent in Te Reo and has every right to speak an official language of NZ.
    
    He is pointing out the waste of time some Government staff are forced to undertake learning pepeha and karakia in their jobs.

  Says the author of this letter. This is a very valid point. If the ministers are indeed representing the people (as are, at least in theory all the MPs), what was the basis of suspension of the Parliament during the initial stages of Covid? Who authorized the then PM to send all the MPs home? I don’t recall any debate let alone a vote on this issue.   Everyone should read that letter and send it to all their contacts. It should be the lead story in mainstream media. The revelations are damning.
  The information in that letter alone should see Coster sacked.
  
  It should be a leading part of the proposed expanded inquiry into the covid response.
  
  Remember the revelations in Cranmer’s Substack showing government had information clearly showing there was risk of harm from the experimental jabs, particularly to young people, and that the government deliberately removed this information? That the government was warned about missing information on the impacts on pregnant and breastfeeding women, immune compromised, frail and elderly etc?
  
  This is yet more evidence that ‘mistakes’ weren’t made. That ‘hindsight’ played no part in events.
  
  These people were fully informed, in no uncertain terms that there were serious issues that should have been addressed. Instead, they were actively and deliberately ignored, suppressed or totally covered up.
  
  This is more evidence of the total malfeasance of the previous government and apparently all of the agencies who work for them. Like the 11,000 health staff offered exemptions from the jab while they forced it onto the unsuspecting public.
  
  There were NO conspiracy theories and the only mis and disinformation came directly from the government and their agencies and the ‘expert’ mouthpieces who harangued us on an almost daily basis in a compliant and bought mainstream media.
  
  We know who they are. Let this inquiry be broad in scope and deep in it’s investigation. There are a number of people in this country who should be serving jail time for their deliberate acts of malfeasance.

  The only reason Govt departments and local councils employ external consultants is to cover their own arses. They use them to cook the numbers for their pet projects to achieve the results they want to go ahead. That means when it blows up in their faces, they can then say “I was relying on what the experts told me”.
  
  If you will recall with the odium of truth during the troubles, the former Dear Leader would always state something along the lines of “with consultation and advice taken from experts”, it gives her deniability and will likely make any attempts to target her during a covid enquiry pretty much futile.

  Maggie, I recall that Paul Holmes’ ex trained to be a doctor and because of her heritage was allowed a lower pass mark. OK I know most doctors are merely prescription dispensers most of their day but every now and then a well trained expert eye discovers serious diseases.

  The pass thresholds will be the same for all students. It is the admission criteria that differ. For the last 40 years there have been various admissions schemes within the university system to increase the number of Maori and Pacific students.
  
  I introduced such a scheme into the Faculty of Commerce at Auckland. In 1984 there were 18 students out of an intake of 900 who identified as either Maori or Pacifica. That in a city where 22% of school leavers were Maori and Pacifica, mostly from schools with relatively low pass rates for bursary. The preferential admission scheme allowed 40 students to be admitted. The criteria was a B Bursary instead of an A Bursary. Students were limited to 6 papers in the first year, and additional tutorials were mandatory.
  
  Over the last 40 years, there has been a large increase in Maori and Pacific commerce graduates, so that is no longer unusual to see Maori and Pacifica in business management positions.

        The previous time was 22yrs ago by a 60yo Thai doctor who replaced the hip in the same leg.

A few years ago an old school mate of mine had his daughter turned down from Otago Med School despite A+ passes in pre-Med, school Dux etc. A total ‘brainbox” that had set her eyes on being a Doctor since she was a young child. When they asked why she was turned away they were told because all the “Non-Maori” places were taken. Maori Pacifica entrants were taken with much lower grades.
      
      My mates daughter instead went and trained in Aust and is now a fully trained Doc there.
      
      PS: Not that it matters, this young Dr was a 4th generation Kiwi descendant from China. Has a work ethic of her parents and grand parents (ie works 80 Hrs+ every week). So well done to the Wayne Mapp’s of this world – keep up your woke magical nonsense! It’s not like we don’t need more Doctors eh!

      No, the scheme didn’t exclude people. The general criteria was an A bursary. This broadly equated to 900 new admissions. But some years it was higher, some years a bit less.
      The Māori and Pacifica scheme with a B bursary entrance criteria was around 40 entrants but often a little less.
      In Commerce, a 10% variation in the numbers made no real difference, not when we were dealing with nearly 1,000 annual admissions.
      It might be different in Medicine where they have hard caps of 200 in each of the two schools.

      The big problem in NZ is that we do not have enough training places available for our population needs.
      
      However, Professor Fraser said the country is well behind Australia which is now offering medical degrees at 21 universities nationwide. Australia produces around 3600 medical graduates a year as compared to only 500 in New Zealand.

    Its true that admission to the first year at Otago for Health Sciences is open to all.
    But the next year, to get into the Full Medical Course (MBChB), Maori/Pacifica only need 69%, Refugee 74%, Rural 86% whilst Pakeha (they call it General) need 93% marks.
    I have seen an OIA request dated 22 Nov 2022 which outlines this.
    In 2022 they had 309 application for General and only 103 received Offers.
    Maori had 67 applicants and 52 got Offers.
    Its too biased.

  I think that is bollocks. I have solar and if anything it’s made me think about usage. I don’t have batteries so plan when to switch things on and off. In addition despite having mains water I collect and fill a 30000 litre tank off the roof and take great pride in not using the mains very often( haven’t used the mains for 6 months). Maybe it’s having lived on a yacht for 9 years while cruising the World it has made me aware of my resources.

  ICE Range extended EV’s and/or battery swap is the answer to many EV issues: range concerns, towing, expensive fast charging infrastructure etc. In the limit it can probably reduce petrol use by 80-90% while still preserving the current utility of petrol ICE cars.
  
  It’s expected that CATL’s sodium ion batteries will be 1/2 to 1/3rd the price of lithium ion in a few years, and should see EVs undercutting Petrol ICE on price.

    The single biggest issue is that you still need to charge them.
    
    Battery swapping helps that, so long as you can get the manufacturers to agree on using the same size batteries, secure quick releases etc.
    
    One of the challenges is to get the business model right. It would have to end up being something like swapping gas bottles. What if you want to swap out a half-charged battery? Do you get a credit?

      Its already entered production. 1st Gen Sodium batteries are in BYD Seagull cars. It’s second gen that are expected to see big price drop as they scale up production (learning curves are fairly reliable for cost reductions)

    None of that fixes the problem of when they catch fire, or the ridiculous cost of repairing them, even after a minor accident.
    
    Watch, insurance cost are going to go through the roof, and as the information emerges re lack of resale cost and cost of batteries any demand will slump. It’s already happening.
    
    As for the other technologies, it would have been a better idea to develop the technology before trying to change the vehicle fleet.
    
    Oh, and maybe prove there is an actual ‘climate crisis’ first? Because on the available evidence, I’m pretty sure there isn’t one.
    Other than that, I’m not opposed to cleaner technology, but EVs are far from ‘clean and green’.

  EV batteries need to be thought of as consumables. If you do so, then the true cost of operating an EV goes up tremendously compared to just the electricity cost.
  
  If you can get 100,000 km out of a $15k battery then that’s costing you 15c per km – just for the battery amortization. Then add the 7cents per km RUC (coming soon) and the cost of the electricity (maybe another 5 cents/km). Total cost 27 cents/km for these expenses.
  
  My small gas guzzler (about the same size as a Leaf) gives 22km per litre. Current cost 12 cents per km – including RUC.
  
  People who think that EVs are going to save them money buy lotto tickets to make a fortune.

        I licked mine like a lollipop (I love the stuff) and watched as she Yank as she psyched herself into a frenzy, turned green and ran out of the galley and vomited her dinner overboard.

  You can’t win against guerillas unless the population they hide among stop cooperating with them. In practice that means they have to be much more afraid of you than the guerillas, and able to dob them in.
  
  If Israel were to announce that they will be keeping 1km² of Gaza levelling another 1km² and executing 100 Hamas fighters for every hostage not returned then I suspect there would be a much greater chance that they would return them forthwith.

Free Speech Union’s Jonathan Ayling talking about Lucy and another case where a man protesting the Palestine protestors was arrested and charged. He asked police if he could take an Israeli flag, was told they advise against it but he was allowed. Showed up with the flag, had it taken off him and arrested.

I can’t see if this has been raised today, but I just want to note my disappointment that the Dunedin City Council is going to fly a Palestinian flag as an expression of solidarity with the people of Gaza. The very same people who elected and are governed by a terrorist organisation. The very same people who overwhelmingly support the actions of Hamas on 7 October. That a New Zealand local body would support such genocidal actions as those of Hamas is beyond appalling.

I am always amazed at how people can associate themselves with such horrific actions but trying to pretend that they stand with the people, as apart from their government. I shudder to think what would have happened had the Allies accepted such an argument during WW2. Imagine arguing that the German people should be protected at all costs, supplied and supported by the Allies, because they weren’t responsible for what the Nazis were doing? Such an argument leads to the sort of response that we get from Hamas:

O’Neill took pictures of herself and her friends sticking the posters up around the city on Friday night and posted them to social media yesterday.

An Australian woman has apologised after video footage of her driving with an unrestrained child on her windscreen shocked residents.

On Sunday, witnesses filmed the moment the boy was spotted lying face-down on the moving vehicle.

The young boy can be seen on the windscreen, clinging to the roof of the vehicle driving through Melbourne’s Pakenham, before climbing up and making his way inside through the open sunroof.

The 27-year-old woman who was driving the car handed herself in to police on Monday, according to 7News.

She apologised for putting her friend’s child in danger and claimed the 11-year-old had slipped through the sunroof.
