  Seems to be a sad situation. She apparently has MS which may be affecting her behaviour. She probably should retire from Parliament which may be problematic for her. She may hang in for the rest of the current term but if Green Party see her as a burden rather than an asset she may be given an unwinnable list position.

      I think a lot of us on here have various ailments (many quite serious and debilitating). I’d be more inclined to ask for help from family first (or perhaps social welfare) if I couldn’t afford basic clothing, rather than attempting stealing. If I was off my face on mind altering meds and was on lizard-brain auto-pilot which resulted in stealing, I’d explain, apologise profusely and pay it all back with interest.

Waikato Tainui takes govt to court over ‘blatant disregard’ for te reo Māori
Waikato Tainui claims the only way to stop te reo Māori being denigrated and eroded is to take the government to court.
The Waikato iwi claims the government’s decision to pull back on the use of the Māori language in the public sector breaches its promise under the Treaty settlement, to protect and preserve te reo.
Spokesman Tukuroirangi Morgan said a case had been filed in the High Court.

“We are holding Winston Peters and David Seymour to account for the blatant disregard for the rule of law that continued to remind this nation that there is one law for all. These are the very two people who have breached our 1995 settlement and we will hold them to account and the only way we can do that is to take them to the High Court, which is exactly what we’ve done.”

This surely needs a few specific examples, which are likely, one assumes, to be in the detail of the case which “Spokesman Tukuroirangi Morgan said had been filed in the High Court.”

Can it also be assumed that, just as Labour didn’t deliver much else, the advances Morgan conceives were being made under Labour, haven’t yet happened, and so what National would “now wind back” has not happened either because of Labours’s non-delivery?

How have “the very two people [ Winston Peters and David Seymour who] …breached our 1995 settlement’ that “we will hold them to account and the only way we can do that is to take them to the High Court”?
For what?

Also, how much is actually been spent by Government agencies to advance te reo?
A reputed $200–600 million, which is long due a detailed innovatory.

        The amount of funding to bring Te Reo into even 50% of Maori homes as the main language of communication is far greater than the $55 million that would have to be redirected from the annual Te Mangai Paho spend on TV and radio. The other $170 million that is spent in Education would also need to be targeted to the kaupapa. – same link

  If Maori want thier language to survive, they need to go and learn it themselves. There’s no point trying to force it on the rest of us who would happily see it dead. Unfortunately though, mastering even one language seems too difficult for most that I know.

  Yeah, right. (Tui) I have a friend who works for a govt dept, and he is finding that in emails from bosses, there are more & more Maori words -replacing- the English words. Nobody talks about “work” anymore, it’s always “mahi.” (And motu, kaimahi, and maunga. The virtue signaling is in over drive)
  When my friend immigrated to NZ we all spoke English, but now it’s pidgin English.

      Reminds me of when I was 18 or 19 playing cricket in Central Hawkes Bay. The selector for the Sub Association team organised a trial on a Sunday at Otane and we all went to the pub for lunch. Tommy Spencer the selector was probably about 70 then and he walked up to the bar and asked for a `thripple header’ which was basically a 5 ounce glass of whisky – no room for water.
      
      Suffice to say he had two or three of those and we had an extended lunch break.

    Lee, being of Scots descent, I successfully treated my complete lack of vaccination with judicious doses of Grants and Johnny Walker.
    The treatment was far more salubrious, determinably effective, ascertainably less toxic, and lacking in the vaccine’s potential for so many types of unwanted corporeal infliction. Resultantly it completely avoided the now provable risk of medical misadventure.

  I just reported a bad pothole in Chch yesterday (yes, there are a few). We’ll see how long it takes for them to fix it.
  
  We have a pin the tail on the donkey style map reporting thing which allows you to precisely located problems down to a metre or two.

    Like tobys that leak (and there are many) I send the council an email and a GPS location. They eventually get fixed but not as quickly as the water use bill is sent out should you ‘overuse’ your allocation…..that is if they actually check your meter and there are a large number of dwellings that do not get measured as they are shared meters…..

        Someone was given a formal warning by police for doing just that in Auckland a few years back.
        
        The letter from NZ Police states that Upson was found to be the offender in a “wilful damage type incident which occurred between 2018 and 2021” and had “offered admissions” to police.
        
        Upson was warned that wilful damage is punishable by three months imprisonment and a fine not exceeding $2000.

        Not a good idea. The road surface will compact around it and leave a concrete bulge. The art of road reinstatement after digging to install or repair services is to have the reinstatement material compacted to the same amount as the existing foundation so over time they all compress and sink by the same amount.

    UPDATE: I drove past today at around 12:30 and it had been fixed. That’s less than 48 hours after I reported it.
    
    Quite likely someone else had reported it too.
    
    I must say that generally our pot holes and water leak people are fairly on the ball. But they don’t quite seem to be as good at partying.

    I was driving at about 40km due to reduced visibility on SH2 in Jan last year in heavy rain in my BMW with low-profile tyres and hit a pothole also. The impact didn’t knock the mirror off its mounting, but it certainly made it point up to the roof of the car.
    
    Took a big chunk out of one of the tyres and had to be replaced Bridgestone Potenzas are not cheap either.
    
    I also went for compensation and got knocked back. Think I’ll have another go.

  On Christmas Day 2022 my family had a picnic in the local park, and after several hours of eating lunch and socialising we wanted to use the facilities, which were locked. I reported this to Auckland Council, expecting that they would remind their security company that when they unlock the gates from the road to the carpark they remember to also unlock the toilets.
  
  On 4th October, yes, more than 9 months later, I received an email from Auckland Council “We have closed this request. Someone else has already let us know about it and we’re working on it. We have now closed the work on the problem you reported.”
  
  9 months to tell me they’re working on it, and that they won’t give me further updates as someone else reported it as well, and presumably that unknown person will receive the updates. I don’t actually need any updates about a locked toilet door, but they would have been better not email me at all, as after 9 months the only thing they have actually told me is that they are slow and useless.

  Interesting Whangarei Mayor is quoted.
  Whangarei like many councils is the proud possessor of a new award winning over budget HQ.
  This one comes with special features, with some regularity, a bell rings and everyone walks out of the building and stands in front, while people in red vehicles appear, then the red vehicles leave and everyone goes back into the building.
  Not sure if it’s team building, a Maori observance, a fitness regimen or what, but it sure looks fun.
  I must say it’s wonderful the ratepayers can afford a new palace with this special feature, speeed bumps everywhere, a shared cycle/walk way right through the city. A shame though that road and roadside maintenance is unaffordable.

    I made a claim against WCC for pothole-delivered damage to my road bike about 15 years ago. Buggered rim. They tried to argue that a roading contractor was to blame, and that I should take it up with them. I pointed out that payment of my rates created a contract making them responsible regardless of who they sub-contracted to. On threatening court action they paid up.

  There is a 8m long section on our road that is deforming where asphalt (essentially a low moving liquid) is pancaking and depressing where bus tyres roll over it. This is forcing three lengthwise peaks like mountain ranges, and the middle one is now so high my car’s underside scrapes on it. It is also a death trap for unaware cyclists as it is on a gentle slope meaning one direction is quite fast.

Great to see Shayne Jones getting right behind a huge new gold mining venture in Central Otago. Really loved his pithy comments about expected tiny shrill minorities talking about click beetles. But it will be interesting to see what happens with the consenting process that involves the Central Otago District Council where the Mayor is a big supporter of that fringe movement that says democracy is broken.

    Meanwhile , ex-National MP,Alfred Ngaro, has blazing headlines and the fight footage put all over the media.

  If her Multiple Sclerosis or the associated drugs being used for its treatment have affected her memory and cognitive ability then this will (and should be) taken into account through the Legal process in exactly the same way as if it was anybody else.
  
  However, this will also call into question her ability to function in an appropriate manner as an MP, her ability to hold a drivers license etc.

  Before I had heard about the wedding date I had arranged dental surgery to remove my (impacted) Wisdom teeth. This was on the day before the planned weddings.
  Then I get not one but two wedding invitations!
  I decided that having to choose one of the three events I would choose the least painful one.

Is there any reason that the Golriz Ghahraman story on the NZ Herald website has been listed only on the main News section and not under either Politics or Crime as one would usually expect?

I note that their Politics section contains the headline “Ex-Nats MP cleared by Police after fight at mum’s tangi” so one would think at a minimum a shoplifting accusation for a current MP would equally be able to be found in this section?

  As for our passport. It depends where you want to go & for how long. When I first went to Thailand I got a stamp at the airport for three months. Now it’s one month and last I heard if you cross by land only a fortnight. If you go to Oz you don’t have to leave. Both count as one in their list

    They have to be very, very, careful that this is not seen to be interference.
    
    Imagine what it will look like if Scotties withdraws the allegations after a discussion with some MPs. How will that look?
    
    Everything should be at arm’s length. Ideally they would:
    1) Only look at police reports etc.
    2) Wait until the full police investigation is complete before asking any questions.
    
    Look at what has happened in the past. Maurice Williamson was kicked out of politics for asking some questions on behalf of someone in his electorate (something I would have though was within an MP’s duties).

      Red, what about my comment above and my comments on this topic yesterday say I’m not being patient. If Michael Roman has actual facts and evidence that Fani Willis is in a relationship with one of the prosecutors then he should show that to us. But so far it’s just an allegation, with no supporting evidence, and he wouldn’t put his own name to it in the Court filings. I’m happy to wait and see if he can back it up, but big claims need big evidence and to date Trump-world has a poor (zero) track record of backing this sort of claim up.
      
      And even if he can back it up it won’t change the course of the case. It just won’t. For example, Marcia Clark & Chris Darden were in a private relationship during the OJ trial … but that had zero impact on the case. The case will be judged on the evidence provided to the Court, not on gossip about who’s sleeping with who.
      
      Personally I thought Hunter turning up today was a ballsy move. It’s just calling their bluff right? They could have sworn him in then and there and asked their questions, but didn’t. So either (a) they have small balls or (b) they have nothing and know they have nothing. You should know that feeling by now.

        Romans lawyer has seen the divorce filings but they cant be released yet. He says they will be unsealed soon.
        Willis paid Wade over $624,000 since 2022 and Wade has never done a Case like this before.
        She gave it to him even though she had inhouse Prosecutors who had done similar cases and would cost half that amount.

    Yup, 196M litres would be about 900 litres per person. It is difficult to see how that would not include the lost water as well as industrial use.
    
    From a utility’s perspective, (same with electricity generation etc) they look at how much water they are pumping out, not at what is getting to the customers.

Multiple sclerosis is in the news with allegations against sufferer and MP Golriz Ghahraman.

Meanwhile the original distribution of the disease has been learned from DNA of Europeans who lived thousands of years ago.

It’s long been believed that incidence of multiple sclerosis is related to geographic origins. It’s a popular belief, for example, that NZ incidence is higher in Southland and Otago because they were largely settled by Scots.

Ancient DNA compared with modern DNA now shows, that “Yamnaya” people who moved west from the Urkaine and southern Russia 5,000 years ago brought the incidence of multiple sclerosis to northern Europeans.

Ancient Yamnaya carried genetic traits that protected them from infections from their sheep and cattle. As sanitary conditions improved over the millennia, these same variants increased multiple sclerosis risk.

Reuters says researchers say this explains why northern Europeans have the world’s highest incidence of the disese.

Golriz Ghahraman was born in Iran. That country’s name, in Persian, means land of the Aryans. Persian, or Farsi, Iran’s native language is of the Indo-European family that ranges across Europe to northern India. Iranians’ ancient ancestors also seem likely to have come from the steppes of Russia and Ukraine.

According to the map at the second link below, Iran`s incidence of multiple sclerosis is higher than NZ`s (estimated at 101 cases per 100,000 people, compared with 72 per 100,000 in NZ)

      Chasing up payments will be no more difficult than with diesels. Ping anyone not showing an up to date RUC sticker.
      
      Where it gets interesting is petrol PHEVs which already pay RUC through petrol for part of their travel.
      
      I suspect the only way to make this work longterm is to take the RUC out of petrol costs and move all vehicles over to per km RUC.

        Once you add RUC the “cheaper than petrol” argument starts to wear a bit thin. If you then go the further step of amortising battery cost then EV starts looking rather unfavourable.
        
        Still if she’s in top end real estate, her EV is probably the right thing to “dress for success” and impress her clients – no matter how much it costs.

  Good question. The paid diesel RUCs are checked at WOF point and an invoice sent if they don’t match the mileage. Diesel vehicle owners are well used to this, and as many are business vehicles they can’t afford to get caught out.

    OK, I’ll bite.
    I used to work for Eskom, the South African power utility that operates a nuke facility near Cape Town called Koeberg. I also did some biological research diving there – diving in the harbour of the power station (right at the intakes) to get various biological samples, including crayfish. After tests and measurements had been done, the crayfish had died, but they were tasty….
    
    I also lived at a coal fired power station for 2 months (Duvha). Big bastard. About 6x the size of Huntly. These always had minor levels of smoke coming out. The place stank of sulphur. Occasionally the static scrubbers were turned off and thick black smoke came out.
    
    Yes, nukes are OPERATIONALLY very clean. There is pretty much nothing coming out of them except hot waste water. No smoke. No radiation.
    
    In fact the normal OPERATIONAL radiation from a nuke plant is way lower than a coal plant. Burning coal releases the radioactive carbon 14 into the atmosphere. But fly ash and sulphur etc compounds are worse.
    
    However cradle to grave nukes are not that clean. Pretty much everything coming out of a nuke building is considered at least low level waste. Wear overalls once, then they get thrown in the low level waste bin. The bulk of the waste is low level waste, but it all gets handled as waste. In South Africa that means being taken to a special dump a few hundred km away. There are tons of that per week. Then of course there are the higher level wastes that are really expensive to deal with and last a long time.
    
    When the nuke power station hits end of life and must be decommissioned pretty much everything must be handled as radioactive waste and takes decades to dismantle and deal with. Some of these decommissioning operations take 100 years.
    
    Decomissioning a coal station is much easier. Just wait for it to cool down and cut it up for scrap metal. No special handling.

She likely has an important trip coming up later this year when she and Chloe etc will have to go throw a wobbly at Trump’s likely inauguration.     The latest in the drip-feed of news about this is the report that at least some in the Green Party were aware of the incident on the day it happened – 23 December.
    
    So…
    * Why was this obvious scandal kept secret for three weeks, then allowed to leak out bit by bit, instead of being hit head-on as a major PR crisis?
    * Why did the Greens let GG leave the country considering the critical nature of the allegations (or did she leave quietly)?
    * Why has there been no statement from GG? Being out of the country is no excuse at all; even if she is Timbuktu or the South Pole she will have access to email and internet.

Is this another case of cultural genocide by the National Library? Or is it mere Woke favouritism?

It has rescued 5,000 of the treasure trove of photographs lost to New Zealand by former Stuff owner Fairfax Media, but these to be historic pictures of indigenous life, if the Guardian is to believed.

Fairfax Fairfax Media sent millions of images from the archives of its Australian and New Zealand newspapers to an American company that offered to digitise them sell the originals for a profit. Presumably the digital rights would have gone back to Fairfax.

The American company went bankrupt, and is selling some of the images on line, but hundreds of thousands will be lost.

The National Library has obtained more than 5,000 photographs of “indigenous life” in NZ.

What about the rest of the country’s history?

You have to wonder whether this performance is a repeat of the National Library five years ago purging 600,000 books from its overseas collections. This was purportedly to make room for shelf space for new books – no doubt frequently Maori and mostly Woke. It would take half a century or more of New Zealand new titles to fill space made vacant.

That caused a row, but didn’t stop the Nazi-scale book loss. This was the national book collection. A resort for the whole country.

Librarians’ arguments included that books were now available internationally online, though digital records are not as assuredly long-life as traditional printed books.

If the National Library is going to bat for Maori, who will stand up for these cultural records of the rest of the country?

    Legally, publishers must deposit with the National Library a copy of every title published in NZ.
    
    Presumably these weren’t culled.
    
    In this country fewer than 2,500 titles are published a year.
    
    In America and the UK a total of about 460,000 titles are published a year.
    
    In a remote country like NZ, it is surely wise for a very deep international book collection to be created and securely maintained.
    
    Print-on-paper books are still the most secure forms of archiving.
    
    A study conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with the Library of Congress, found that the lifespan of CD’s and DVD’s can range from as little as two years to more than 30 years. (First link below).

According to reporter Ryan Boswell – reporting from a beach – on OneNews, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunstroke and (drumroll please) “even sunburn”. Shock horror.
