Know how anyone not extremely left-of-centre is always defined as ultra-right/ fascists/ racists and running on conspiracy theories? Though it has to be acknowledged that there are a number of commenters on this site who justify the description. By anyone sane, this evidence unsupported namecalling is always seen as projection by their accusers who don’t have credible arguments.
For proof of how unhinged the left can be, over on The Daily Blog, there is a snowballing “discussion” on how Mossad has taken down Tory and Golriz because they are strong women of colour! And though the head post was from him, it isn’t the Screaming Beard leading it. Some posters are complaining that The Standard is banning them because of their views – worrying to think that their anti-right ranting was too much for Mr Prentice. The behaviour of the women which brought them to the attention of the public didn’t occur but was “manfactured”.
When one reads the rants, one cannot help but think it is a Monty Python skit. If the “progressive” thinkers honestly hold these type of views, no wonder why they worry about reactionary forces are against them. Their grip on reality must be tenuous at best. Can’t be long until the staff in white coats arrive. But then that will be suppression of the truth by the forces of evil.
I haven’t bothered linking to them as I would be concerned for the blood pressure of readers here, but they are easy enough to find.

  CJ. I can’t disagree with your analysis of some of the thinking on The Standard and TDB. At least on the Standard if you get censored they tell you why even though the reasoning is often wrong imo, whereas Martyn Bradbury doesn’t publish what he doesn’t like without explanation.

    Tom I have come across Millsy and even tried to rationalise with him on occasion. Once bitten twice shy. What bewildered me was that I felt my comments on TDB were rational, non abusive and generally accepted by the other posters even though many were lefties. Martyn was not prepared to publish some of my views but happy to publish Millsys irrational ranting which made no sense most of the time. Strange indeed.

Its possible that over dinner and a few nice reds one night three or four people decided to create personas and started talking up the most provocative and insane conspiracy theories on certain notoriously left wing platforms. Childish, but amusing. We took to denouncing each other, piling onto each other in the most outrageous ways we could think of. Two things happened, other idiots joined the fray and no matter how nutty or outlandish we were, someone else would always go one better.

  The Left want to behave badly and for there to be no consequences. Whether it be Kiri, Tory, or Golriz, or any other ‘darling of the Left’, the whole machinery of woke / socialist activism goes into overdrive with a furious backlash against anyone daring to report on or comment on any of the actions that female Leftist notables take that bring discredit and disrepute upon themselves. The upshot being that any reporting at all is framed as being an unjust persecution of ‘strong (Leftist) women’. Race, gender, mental health, addiction, political stance….the Left cycle through all their available talking points in each instance. The goal is to shame and ‘cancel’ any media or commentators willing to discuss these stories, by portraying them as racist / sexist / insensitive to mental health / aiding the Right (‘the real bad people’). And it does seem to be working. I do think the media is treating these matters with kid gloves.

  The constant slander of Nat/Act/NZF cracks me up. Literal doomsday stuff mixed in with racial hatred, sexism and envy. Comments such as “nActs rich white man party gonna put the brown man back in shackles. They will cut your benefits and put ur kids in poverty to give their rich mates a tax cut while selling out our country to foreign corporations who will pillage the environment for their capitalist profits and commit us to a future of climate catastrophe”

  Given the strength of feelings over Gaza from the Greens could Scotties’ owners have expressed an alternate view pushing back, and Golriz and friends went for some petty revenge. But got caught.

    According to the Herald, she did it twice. The second time, it was about $15k of goods. They were anonymously returned later.
    While one could argue that one item may be taken because a distraction occurs (taking a call on way to counter for example) the paper’s description looks a lot more serious situation. And the paper would have had their lawyers go over it with a very beady eye.

    I fear the point is being missed that fanaticism within a subculture forgives and gives permission to acts that are inconsistent with everyday norms.
    
    Assuming it occurred it will be stealing to the dominant culture, but it could very likely be seen as acceptable to at least some of the Greens if the victim has transgressed the norms of the subculture. See how they behaved over the destruction of Te Papa’s ToW display.
    
    I’ll be waiting for the Greens to denounce shoplifting if it occurred, but even if forced to it I suspect they will mutter ‘all property is theft’.

Reframing co-governance: Jackson’s warning to Labour
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the ship’s sailed on explaining co-governance to the public, which is why it needs to be reframed in a way it can be understood.

“David Seymour and Christopher Luxon have successfully transitioned a section of the New Zealand public into thinking that it is all part of a Māori take-over,” he told Newsroom in an interview at Waitangi.

“We have to reframe it, and we’re looking at possibilities… it’s just become so tainted.”

Cabinet’s discussions around how to re-pitch co-governance to the public in an election year will take place over the next few weeks, Jackson said, and the Māori caucus is meeting in the coming week to talk about some of the potential solutions.

Jackson is one of the ministers fronting the debate through the work he has been doing on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which has now been parked until after the election. He says he has done his best to try explain why a co-governance partnership is needed.

“I think I always tried to explain it, and with respect I’ve done my best.
“I always warned and said it’s going to be picked up by the other side who will say, oh look Jackson and them are going to try pull in all this co-governance stuff.”

Many recent references refer to National approving UNDRIP, so initiated an agreement that the six years of recent Labour administration says they are only validating, but fail to mention the covenant National had ‘signed’ UNDRIP on –

In this, National drew a line not to be crossed, which – were it not ironic – could be funny considering Morgan has now claim Tainui-Waikato is drawing their own line – because they have crossed National’s line.

And the Jackson quote, above, shows the difficulty the Maori Caucus anticipated in parceling their crossing of Sharples’ and Nationals line, to venture where they have with He Paupau and the problems in ‘selling’ that to the nation.

Is Waikato-Tainui’s current claims to the High Court, and Morgan’s threats over crossing any line, to set in concrete their own ‘crossing of a line’ that surrounded the Treaty.

Their claim therefore goes beyond the Treaty which they will now say defines their right to something aspirational outside the Treaty (are you following this) and which Labour, in their signature-trait of non-delivery, put on a shelf for the duration of the recent Election, and will stay there unless National-ACT-New Zealand First put New Zealand first and take it off the shelf and reveal to the nation what Waikato-Tainui are hoping the High Court will grant them – outside the Treaty!

Ask for a copy of the response Jackson was preparing for the the Labour Cabinet and the 20 percent that he was unhappy with and new he could not “sell” to Cabinet, to then “sell” to the nation

Jackson said he would take the work back to Cabinet in the next week; all but confirming it would be shelved due to it needing more work and a better level of public understanding.
“We still haven’t consulted with New Zealand. We’ve consulted with some Māori but other people haven’t had an opportunity; Pākehā people, ethnic people. That’s a lot of work to do.
“We’re also getting questions about it and so in terms of time I was hoping for us to have it signed off by Christmas but we’re way off in terms of timelines and so there’s a lot of work still to be done.”
That work would continue over the next 12 months, he said.

Work Waikato-Tainui will now treat as having been done?

    which means not only has Labour addressed what they interpret was a logical duty from UNDRIP to go beyond the Treaty with the He Paupau exercise,
    but have arroused Maori aspirations to respond in 72 hui of “targeted” ēlite held after He Puapua and then shelved that for the Election, but Tainui-Waikato don’t want to go back to pre-He Paupau, now that the taniwha is out of the box.
    
    And as UNDRIP is non-binding their aspirations, turned to inspiration, may all hang on a thread like “non-binding”.
    
    And first they may have to define what they think they are in danger of losing.

  All of this treaty talk needs to be put to bed. Simply.
  
  Let’s get to the crux of the matter. We have a national document that guarantees equal rights for all. Some people don’t like that concept and want to be able to treat people differently depending on their ethnicity. AKA institutional racism. These racists are trying to reinterpret and abolish the original intention of the treaty. They are even going as far as vandalising the treaty in our national museum in an attempt to physically remove or censor the words of the document.

    Many reasons, but the main one is “Forestry and Fisheries” were not in the original. “Forestry and Fisheries” were added by James Freeman.

Billions of People will vote this year in 65 Countries.
Most voters will not have a clue about those they are voting for. Many idiots will be elected.

It seems mainly the vote will be given to the person with best publicity/PR TV presentation.

There are many examples of “”dictatorship”” democracies.
Singapore
Cambodia
Russia
NZ under PM Ardren.
etc etc

Vietnam is a non democratic country going great guns economically and socially.
USA is a democracy which is falling of a cliff economically and socially

So why do we stick with the myth that the world needs democracy

    The idea that popular sovereignty (which we have only in theory, definitely not in practice) is superior to aristocracy (in its true sense of “rule by the best”) or autocracy etc. is one of the great unexamined first-principles that we accept without question.
    
    If we are talking pure theory, it stands to reasonable scrutiny that “rule by the best” would always be better than “rule by the many.” Would you rather the many flew you aircraft when you went overseas, or the best did it (i.e. the pilot). So too in any other context, including politics.
    
    Maybe democracy is the best, but we need reasons for assuming that it is so, not just “democracy is best because everyone gets a vote.” That’s obviously circular, so is a useless argument. That assumption is, in effect, “democracy is best because democracy” which tells us nothing about its merits.
    
    It’s not how decisions are made and policies formulated and implemented that counts, it’s the quality and effect of the same.
    
    I’d rather the best decisions were made by one guy than terrible decisions were made by the many. That is the rational position to take.

        That’s just dumb. Why would I want the worst decisions to be made, given that I would have to live under the consequences of those decisions?
        
        And this raises the central question of politics: what are the “best” and the “worst” decisions?
        
        But you’re right about the women: women are one of God’s greatest gifts, but they shouldn’t be in positions of power. Because men and women are inherently different, they will govern differently. Women are (generally) less assertive, more emotional and less logical and rational than men tend to be. In practice, this means that different inputs will give different outputs.
        
        This isn’t even ideological, but is based on empiricism, the gold standard of “liberal democracy” – is society better or worse (there’s that question, again!) since women were “granted equality” (by men)? I’d say it’s much worse.

        Is it clear? What if “the best” has views that run counter to the interests of the established order? What if “the best” is a “far-right” “white supremacist” reactionary?
        
        What will happen, unless democracy is allowed to function, is they will never get elected, because they will be denounced (using the labels I have given our hypothetical aristocrat) by those who are most at threat by this person, those who manufacture consent and determine the “acceptable” and the “unacceptable” solely on the grounds of what benefits them and maintains their power. Moreover, “the people” will generally believe whatever they are told.

      Consider this: we are supposedly all “democracies” in the Western world, wherein (the theory goes) the popular will determines the political settings. If this were the case, it would be fair to expect a reasonable amount of political heterogeneity between say, France, Germany, Sweden or Canada. Different places in the “liberal democratic” world would end up with different decisions being reached by the people.
      
      Yet isn’t it an interesting point that there is almost complete uniformity in the political consensus, aka the liberal orthodoxy and all entails. How does such uniformity occur when we are supposedly free to make up our own minds and have our representatives act accordingly.
      
      Whether it’s Europe, North and parts of South America, Australia and so on, these societies are almost all identical in terms of the basic political settings and underlying ideology?
      
      How is this possible? It’s possible because, in each of these places, “public sentiment” and “popular will” aren’t formed organically, they are instead predetermined in accordance with Money Power, prepackaged and sent forth into the soft minds of the public.
      
      As empirical confirmation of my thesis, just observe what happens when this set-up fails and an accidental outbreak of true democracy occurs, as it did when Trump was elected. Absolute desperation and panic set in. All pretense of “our democracy” was dropped, because it was considered much more important to delegitimise and, if possible, remove the “contagion” that was Trump. The entire so-called “democratic” apparatus swung into action and was employed in a coordinated fashion to label and repudiate what was an actual expression of democracy an anomalous and dangerous aberration.

I’ve been open minded about you and – in the interest of getting a balanced perspective – had actually semi enjoyed reading your contributions.         My sample is all women at all places and at all times. Are there exceptions? Sure. Are plenty of men useless? Of course. But as they say, the exception doesn’t disprove the rule.
        
        My general proposition is that men are more suited to lead on account of the attributes we typically possess.
        
        If I may quote myself, I said that “Women are (generally) less assertive, more emotional and less logical and rational than men tend to be.”
        
        I stand by that. But you know what? I don’t think women are or should be “men with ovaries.” Women are women because they aren’t like men. And that’s why we love them.
        
        Ironically, Feminism tells us, when all is stripped away, that women are just like men – how is this pro-women? On the contrary, it basically denies the distinct female category. But, like all progressive Trojan horse’s feminism, is about knee-capping men, not helping women.
        
        I’ve made the point before, but, if men were so inclined and motivated, they’d rescind all “womens’ rights” tomorrow – what would women do about it? If we step outside socio-politics into the realm of biology, men are almost always physically stronger than women. Thus, women have “equality” with men solely at the pleasure of men. It is an artificial construct that therefore must be enforced and imposed by the law and by bureaucracy.
        
        Nobody is saying that women should be “oppressed” by men (whatever that means) or somehow ill-treated. All I’m saying is that they shouldn’t be near the levers of political power. We’d all be better off, including women. Males and Females aren’t the same, we are complimentary. Women aren’t of lesser intrinsic value, but they certainly have different attributes to men. This used to be self-evident.

      I think the truth is that we discovered this risk of democracy a long looong time ago. The USA founding fathers famously said “democracy is nothing but a sheep and two wolves deciding on what’s for dinner”. Ultimately, all democracies devolve into authoritarian socialism and eventually economic and social collapse.
      
      This is why the USA is not a democracy but is a constitutional republic. The easiest way to think of this system is “democracy with limits”. Those limits being the human rights ordained by God/nature. This is the only way that democracy can survive long term. Somehow people still do not understand the value and importance of human rights and keep voting for more and more abuse of their fellow citizens. Something is wrong with the morality of today’s society.

      It is hard to believe that we civilised humans do not yet have a minimal set of essential laws and regulations, that have been tried and tested, and have implemented them in every country on the planet. (Note to self: that would negate the need for borders…).
      Why do politicians constantly make legislation, most of which makes the country worse off ?
      I would vote for any party who promised to spend their entire term repealing legislation.

The problem for the current power elite is that, if we had a moral society, we’d reject their influence and reform the political order. Their control and influence is based on demoralisation.
        
        It benefits the man behind the curtain for most of us to be as immoral, addicted, degenerate, distracted, hedonistic, materialistic and nihilistic as possible. That’s why they hate Christianity so much, because it runs counter to all of this. Sure, you get a shit society, but they don’t care, as long as they are ruling over the rubble.
        
        They also hate Islam if truth be told, but it has short-term utility in that Muslims tend to be non-White, which is why they are so useful as immigrants due to the demographic changes they (and others) cause.

  IMO, democracy is important, but it’s less important than a free and open market (zero Government interference). We all get to ‘vote’ many times every day when we buy stuff. Any Government rule/law that interferes with individual choices will ultimately lead to a suboptimal outcome.
  
  Democracy has the obvious flaw in that it has lead to govts overspending using debt and money printing – basically buying votes. Over many years/decades the vote buying spirals out of control, creating the situation we now have in USA, Japan, UK, Europe etc. NZ is not immune from this. We have our ‘most right-wing Govt ever’ running debts through until 2027 (better than the Leftards we did have – but still vote buying with taxpayers money).
  
  The problem isn’t democracy. The problem is collectivism/socialism in its many forms and the power-hungry Statists that we elect.

    My question is – if the govt takes half of your money in taxation…how much “voting” power do you actually have, and hence how much control do you have over your own life?
    
    I don’t think it is accurate to say socialism is non democratic. Democracy is simply mob rule. If people vote to take away other’s voting power through taxation – that is still democracy, as crazy as that sounds. I think it is more accurate to say that both socialism and democracy are incompatible with liberalism/libertarianism and the concept of human rights and individual empowerment/free will.

      I started my RAF flying training in 1965. Many of the instructors had chests full of medals. Same at school before that. My memorable teachers were Physics ex Lt Submariner, chemistry ex mosquito pilot, woodwork RAF cpl who rebuilt Mosquitos, Biology ex infantry Lt and Japanese POW. They motivated me for life. My Father ex Special Ops and didn’t even know he had a daughter till she was 4 years old he had a major influence too.

      It always amuses me how superficial the thinking is that, on the one hand, valourises the young men who went to fight in WW2 (and those who sent them) aka “the Good War” then on the other hand goes on to repudiate the “safe spaces” trannies and general social degeneracy that was ushered in by the victorious Allies. Don’t you see the connection?
      
      While it has become a well-worn meme an at this point, the idea that “if the young men who stormed the German machine guns at Normandy could see he world that they were fighting for today, they wouldn’t have gone 40 feet up the beach.”
      
      Since then, there has been constructed a popular mythology that assures us that we were justified in doing what we did. “They” were completely in the wrong, while “we” were completely in the right. No need for nuance and gray areas to distract us and to introduce doubt and questions.
      
      The two world wars were really one protracted civil war fought between Europeans that ended up” killing” us all. But at least we’ve got our safe spaces, our trannies and our all-too-common self-hatred to ease the pain.

    And you don’t even need to be a soldier or airman to appreciate it.
    
    Seeing returned soldiers missing body parts or wearing blazers on a summers day to cover up their colostomy bag can make you appreciate what you have. Not just then, but for the next 40 years as they make their way though their lives.
    
    Even civilians had to endure some hardship through worrying about their men away, doing manual work that men were not there to do and coping with rationing.
    
    These days hardship is driving a car without airconditioning or having to wait a week for something you ordered online.
    
    No wonder people start complaining about trivial nonsense.

      cmm: Well said…I have also – very reluctantly – concluded that perhaps war from time to time is a necessary part of human existence. War, or at least some similar calamity, like a major depression.
      
      My late father had always wanted to be a vet. He was the son of a modest farmer in the BOP – the farm was lost in the depression, which meant – no student loans back then – my father was unable to go and study, and instead became a fisherman and later a carpenter.
      
      (Many people today don’t realise that secondary school in NZ was not free until about 1942.) Unless one’s parents were reasonably well off, university was out of the question.
      
      My father became a very good carpenter – but his best relationships were probably with the family dogs and cats!

        Yes, know what you mean. I was born in 1942 and grew up in Te Puke. In the next 10 – 15 years, even though most people were deprived by today’s standards, to us it was normal. No butter for your sandwiches so use dripping. Kids shoes too expensive, so sandals. Clothing – I was the 2nd born, so all my clothes were hand me downs from my older brother.
        My dad, who suffered a back injury while serving in Italy, came home at the end of 1944 & spent the next 15 months in Auckand hospital getting his back rearranged. He was on pain medication for the rest of his life.
        Seeing and living a degree of deprivation & hardship is character building and a learning curve for helping others & sharing, and working to feed yourself & others..

        It’s certainly an interesting idea. This notion was developed in times when warriors would face each other eyeball to eyeball with swords and other hand-held weapons, rather than in our age of impersonal and highly mechanised and barbaric mass killing. Dropping bombs from 10,000 feet was never considered.
        
        If nothing else, understanding the Traditionalist mindset shows us that there are other possible ways of thought and approaches to life than those seen as self-evident by us late-stage Westerners.
        
        It should be remembered that our secular materialism is a historical anomaly, not that “less enlightened” worldview it displaced. What is and isn’t the more valid worldview is largely a matter of perspective and habit of thought.

    His missed his brother terribly and became quite emotional when he visited his grave with my sister (as did the Austrian family on the farm where he was a POW when he visited them)

        I think it’s fair to say that most of them thought they were fighting for something broadly the same as what they knew (i.e. society in the 1930s and 40s). Weren’t they told they were “defending” something, rather than fighting to establish something that didn’t yet exist?
        
        Of course, like in almost any war, they were lied to and they were in fact fighting for something that didn’t yet exist – open and “tolerant” societies where anyone from anywhere was considered to have the same claim as anyone else, loss of national sovereignty and expanded global governance justified by the “rules-based international order” and “freedom” to identify as anything that pops into your mind.

In The Case of the Disappearing Door, it appears Boeing has chosen to reward their executives on how well they implement DEI, rather than the value they return to shareholders.
I would have thought this would be an actionable offense for shareholders, however shareholder power is concentrated in the hands of multinational funds who can currently dictate policy to even small suppliers of companies like Fonterra or Boeing.

    Local: Back in1989 my then wife and I flew United 811 the night after the cargo hold door blew out on the very same flight, sucking a number of people to their deaths.
    
    We looked at switching to Air NZ, but the cost was prohibitive. We vowed that any suggestion of anything being wrong – even including a gate change – would cause us to change airlines and suck up the extra costs.
    
    I have never been more relieved to reach the shores of dear old NZ than at the end of that flight.

    Oh…
    The greens have done far more than train their guns on the farming sector. With the help of the last govt, they have proverbially screwed New Zealand’s electricity sector for most of the next decade.
    
    Just go to the Ministry of the Environment website and read the damage done up to 31 July 2023, in the name of meeting the Paris Climate accord.
    
    The damage is not irreparable, but the damage will take a determined govt who are prepared to stand up to the Greens, the media and all the hangers on (including Parker & the Labour party).
    
    In essence, the Environment policy positions, and Parker’s RMA replacements, means NZ is meant to rely on solar & wind power for future generation. This is in the face of much energy is generated in Europe & the UK from new thermal power stations. All of which have better green house gas footprints per MW of electricity generated than paddocks of solar arrays or wind turbines standing on hills.

However, Ancient Rome documented the geographical area as a Jewsih Homeland in 48BC, When Julius Ceasar Confirmed Hyrcanus II as ethnarch of the Jews.

  That’s how I see it as well. Pre 1948 the area had no formal boundaries and was administered the Ottoman Empire. The People living there were offered what would have been a formal Palestinian State at the time but the surrounding Muslim countries didn’t want a bar of because they didn’t want to legitimatise Israel’s newly formed State. The Palestinians played catch up and formed a State in 1988. The rest is History albeit a shocker. Everyone has their own take on the situation but this is mine. The rights and wrongs can be argued over the last two thousand years and will always be right or wrong depending what side you’re on.

The area in question has had numerous names over the course of its history, and there was even a Crusader ‘Kingdom of Jerusalem’ established there. (It lasted for almost two hundred years, from the accession of Godfrey of Bouillon in 1099 until the siege of Acre in 1291.)

  I watched an interesting video about this a while back. I can’t remember if it was posted on this site or another. Anyway, the jist of the video is that this area of the middle east has been conquered back and forth by so many different groups that it is difficult for any one group to claim legitimate historical right of possession of this land. As far as I can tell, the area has been practicing Islam for nearly the same amount of time that it has been practicing Judaism. I’m not a fan of religion, particularly Islam, however I believe the only solution is a secular state where all peoples are respected and given a voice at the table. Unfortunately this is at odds with the desires of the Islamic fundamentalists and Jewish Zionists. I don’t have happy predictions for the future I’m sad to say.

      I’m not sure if it’s quite so cut-and-dry. Yes, the hebrews have been living in this area since around 1800BCE, but they did not practice Judaism. They practiced Yahwism. Judasim will not be formalised into a version we recognise until around 70CE.
      
      That would give Judaism as we recognise, 6 centuries as the dominant religion in the area. 24 centuries if you include Yahwism. The Arabs conquered Palestine in the 7th century and Islam was dominant for the next 12 centuries.
      
      Whichever way you look at, no one race or religion can claim historical right to this area. I think it is probably best that we forget about such profiling anyway and treat people the same regardless of race or religion. It is 2023 after all.

      Jews are more of an ethnic group than they are a religion. Judaism’s fundamental utility is that it keeps Jews Jewish by blood. There are so few Jews in the world because it is not a universalist religion, but is particularist and tribal.
      
      Even if I converted to Judaism tomorrow, Jerry Seinfeld would always be considered a Jew by other Jews far more than I would, simply because I don’t have the right blood. Secular or religious, atheist or devout, it doesn’t matter, they are all part of the same group.
      
      Israel is fundamentally based on blood and soil, ethnicity and land. Just listen to them if you don’t believe me. Nobody says “the Catholic people” when they refer to Catholics, because Catholics aren’t a people (i.e. a race or ethnicity) connected by blood, they are connected by a doctrine. By contrast, “the Jewish people” is consistently used to refer to the Jews, by themselves and by others.

      This is called Zionism and exactly why it cannot be a secular state. You cannot create a new country as a homeland for one particular religion while at the same time claiming it is secular.       A hypothetical thought experiment: imagine if the Arabian peninsula had been under Christian rule for the last 1300yrs. WW3 breaks out and a holocaust happens against the Arabs. If they end up stateless and nobody will accept them, would it be OK if we carve off a piece of land in Arabia to create a refuge and homeland for Islam?         You might ask yourself what is the state religion of Israel? Who is the leader of that religion and what role does he have in government?
        A State for Poles, Slovaks, Albanians; Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia. All states set up for ethnic groups that lack genetic purity but identify together as a racial group.
        England by contrast, has a state religion, and the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury has an official but now ceremonial role in Government.

  The argument against a claim by Palestinian Arabs is often that there was no Palestinian State before Jews began immigrating there en masse.
  
  Obviously then, if “having no pre-existing state” is an argument against Palestinian claims, then it is also an argument against the Jewish, given that there was also no pre-existing Jewish state, until as late as 1948.
  
  If we move away from statehood and turn to occupation of the region as our criterion, then both sides have very similar claims in terms of longevity.
  
  So they’ve both lived there for centuries so both have roughly the same claim. However, the historical numbers go against the Jews, with non-Jews having been the vast majority in Palestine until very recently, with the Jews only at 2-5%.

      Spot on. Although in this case, the “might” is directly or indirectly American, hence the need for an American public “consensus” to back Israel.
      
      I’d at least respect the Israelis if they just dropped the facade about morality (however necessary it is to get the credulous onside) and came out and admitted what they see as their God-given ethnic supremacy which they believe justifies their actions. What they are doing in Gaza isn’t moral no matter how they try to spin it, it’s an exercise in the use of brute force.

  You will notice that they play games with words like “average” and “normal”.
  
  They almost never report weather that is cooler than average, but will report weather that is warmer than average. Instead they will say the lower than average temperature is normal (which it is most of the time), but what they won’t say is that the higher than average temperatures are also normal (well most of the time).
  
  The difference is that average is a single value but normal is a range.
  
  We should expect about half the days to be above average and about half to be below average (that is how average works). However the vast majority of measurements (warmer or cooler) are within the normally expected range.

    To say that it is a fraud is an understatement.
    
    It is a graph produced by people in the Northern Hemisphere based on temperature readings “averaged” for the past 40 years.
    
    You look at the graph and it shows an extreme bell from January to December. The temperatures are low on the left & right extremes of the graph, and high in the middle of the graph.
    
    That is not possible, unless they are ignoring the Southern Hemisphere from their measurements. Which is the only explanation for their dramatic graph.

  I haven’t exactly been keeping records, but my sense is that in the last decade or more, Canterbury summers have been cooler and less consistent. We don’t seem to get the sustained runs of very high temperatures and tiring nor’westers that I remember from when I first lived here 30 years ago.

        lifesgood, I’m guessing that Simon Dallow – as the regular newsreader; ie that’s his ONLY job – is under considerable pressure to toe the company line and increase his use of Maori, or face the prospect of being replaced by someone who will do what they’re told. Approaching 60 years old, I’d say he’ll do what has to be done to keep his job.
        
        Whereas Daniel Faitaua and Jenny Suo, both of whom are standing in and both of whom I think have worked as foreign correspondents (certainly Mr Faitaua has) have no such pressure.
        
        And you’re correct, the news is a joy to watch with professional presenters in place at the moment.

  As an editor I regularly edit articles written by people who seem to have recourse to a dictionary but no knowledge of general usage.
  My most recent puzzle was ‘choiceful’, apparently used to mean lots of good options. In its archaic usage (1500s) it meant too many options to be of any use. Seems to have been appropriated by management speak idiots.

      But words ultimately from the same Latin source have been used in English for centuries.
      
      “Viscous” means gluey or sticky. “Viscid” means the same, though its mostly been used by botanists over the last three or four centuries.
      
      I did Latin grind so long ago I can’t make an adjective “viscidus” from “viscum” – the word for mistletoe and the sticky bird lime made from the plant.
      
      Regardless, Janet Wilson writes clearly in readable English. The source of “viscidus” in this case will likely be a computer spell checker. It just ain’t in my great old Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

    grey: Janet Wilson is usually pretty sound; I would think it was just a typo – no subbies or proof readers these days to pick them up.
    
    On the wider issue, I not sure I agree with her and others’ advice to Gharaman. In my own case, I took advice from an eminent QC regarding what I could say given the blanket suppression orders regarding my own case – not just covering the young boy’s name I used to obtain the passport, but my own.
    
    The advice was that outside the House I could say absolutely nothing unless or until I could get the District Court to vary the orders made 6 years before. In response to shouted questions from the scum (I still now somewhat regret not decking Gower when he blocked my path into the departure lounge) I repeated the advice I had received, and added that I had instructed my lawyer to make an urgent request to vary the orders so I could say more.
    
    It didn’t make a blind bit of difference – Gower and his mates still shoved their microphones up my nose demanding that I “explain myself to the people of New Zealand”
    
    So while I have no sympathy for Gharaman, I do perhaps understand her reluctance to speak – especially given that she seems to have a tendency to run off at the mouth, and would likely be easily cajoled into saying more than she wisely should.

  Mmm BN. There are a few ifs buts and maybes here don’t you think. I think you actually have to see proof these clots are connected to COVID or the vaccines, and even with the coincidence of timing there is none. If they do eventually prove a connection it would then have to be proven it was the vaccine or a medication used to treat the COVID because if these clots are caused by COVID it’s nobody’s fault is it. The embalmers seeing more instances in vaccinated corpses is heresay if there are no figures and would still not prove anything. You may even reason that these clots were caused by Covid itself and so to reduce the possibility of such clots in severe cases it would be wise to keep up to date with vaccinations that reduce the chance of severe infections. This was a second conviction after Polish Supreme Court reviewed the original conviction and subsequent presidential pardon decree.

  However is in control of the driver-less vehicle is responsible for what happens, unless they can prove the product was faulty.
  
  No different to dog laws. If your dog bites the arm of face of a child, you are responsible. The fact that you were not riding or steering the dog is irrelevant. It’s your dog. And you started the dog on it’s journey by letting it out the gate or off it’s lead at the local park.

  This is a ridiculous abdication of responsibility. The driver has always been responsible for all aspects of a vehicle but if the driver cannot be determined then the vehicle owner is liable.
  
  Someone has to pick up the liability though. Whether that is the owner or the company that built the product is going to change things.

    Even though there was no person in the car at the time, the cause of the driving that created the effect, was the person who set it on its journey, and/or the propeller head that programmed it and/or the analysts/project managers who designed the rules it would follow.
    
    In fact “driver-less” car is an oxymoron. As there is always a driver. We just can’t see the driver, and/or the driver is well removed from the situation, but he is still ultimately responsible as a cause.
    
    A driver-less car is like a child with mental handicaps, who has a mental age of 8. His/her parents are perpetually responsible.

      The thing will be that there is no person that sets it on its journey. The car will “know” the kids finish school at 3pm and will automatically leave at 2.30 to pick them up.
      
      So, when these devices kill people, and they will, and there is no responsible person to put in the dock, then the engineers will be called in and blamed.
      
      The net result will be one of:
      * Engineers (well competent ones that want to preserve their careers) will avoid these jobs or have special clauses in their contracts etc to protect themselves.
      * Algorithms will be extremely risk adverse, meaning the autonomous cars will dawdle along at low speeds fearful of causing a crash. They will be easy to “bully”. eg, if you are waiting for a gap in the traffic and you see an automated car then just turn in front of it knowing that it will chicken out and give other vehicles room.

Presumably the gummit will now ban kiwis from travelling to hot countries for holidays because we can’t cope with heat. The continual catastrophising (?) of summer is just ridiculous.

  Individual cell temperature / discharge rate / charge rate and state of each cell has to be closely monitored to either prevent thermal runaway or at least warn users of a dangerous or critical situation.
  
  But if a Li-Ion cell goes rogue, disconnecting from the rest will not stop it going into thermal runaway. It overheats and becomes a detonator for the rest of the cells.

  Flying private jets to climate change conferences to talk about limiting fossil fuel use is still fossil fuel use.

    Ah, but in UK they are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by having biomass plants that burn plant material.
    
    Here is how that works:
    * Chop down native trees in USA.
    * Transport them to the chipping facility by train, truck or river barge (diesel).
    * Chip the trees (probably need to kiln dry them too).
    * Load onto ships and transport to UK.
    * Transport by train or truck to biomass plant.
    * Sustainably burn biomass causing zero carbon emissions.

      Them little birdies that Mao had killed were also eating insects and were of net benefit (ie. they crop protection they provided by eating insects way outweighed the cost in grain they consumed).
      
      Rooks? Where’s the benefit? They might eat the odd mouse but they seem to do a lot of damage to birdlife – especially native birds).

      Ghost: My situation was quite different….I had been charged and dealt with by the courts five years earlier (it took them more than 25 years to track down all the bogey passports issued to dead people, but that’s a whole other story). GG has not yet been charged with anything – but I think she probably will be.
      
      I realised my career was over when my party abandoned me – having initially said that if – I always knew it was when – it all came out they would stand by me. They didn’t, and I had very young children to protect from the jackals.
      
      I knew I had to resign when we were literally on the run – en route to my sister’s house – when a little voice came from the carseat in the back: “Daddy, will the media come tonight?” Of course my four year old son had no idea what “the media” were, but he knew they were hunting us, and that “the media” was something to be frightened of.
      
      I resigned later that night – but as I have said, even that didn’t stop the bastards.

Trump 14th Amendment Challenger Arrested on Federal Tax Charges

A man who filed a number of lawsuits in different states to try to prevent former President Donald Trump from appearing on election ballots has been arrested on federal tax charges.

John Anthony Castro was charged last week with 33 counts of aiding the preparation of false tax returns, according to Department of Justice prosecutors. They said that he ran a virtual tax business that gave customers returns beyond what they were really owed.

TDS and criminality seem to be comfortable bedfellows.

Green co-leaders Marama Davidson and James Shaw, in a joint statement issued on Friday afternoon, said they first became aware of an issue on December 27. But at that point, they said it was “not clear” what had happened. In the new year, on January 5, the co-leaders said they were told of a second allegation of shoplifting.

The Green co-leaders said they didn’t make any public comment at the request of Scotties Boutique.

“Scotties had told us they did not want the allegations to become public so we did not make a statement at the time,” they said.

Scotties Boutique co-owner Sonja Batt and staff at the store have declined to comment to Stuff.

The Green co-leaders continued: “Scotties confirmed that they were comfortable waiting for her to return to New Zealand to resolve the issue.

“We also agreed as co-leaders to address the matter with Ms Ghahraman as soon as she returned to New Zealand.”

They also said no other Green MPs had been involved in either of the alleged incidents.

    I don’t believe that Scotties prosecute the shop lifter. The police do that. Scotties may choose not to lodge a complaint, or not to give evidence in court. However the police are involved so presumably a complaint has been laid so it may be that the incident has unstoppable momentum.
    Presumably GG will have her day in court (in around 18 months) and will either gladly plead her innocence or guilt.

    Not correct. It is for the Police and, if appropriate, the Crown, to take the decision whether to prosecute in any criminal case. The wishes of the victim are a factor in the decision, but not conclusive. Nor can the victim “choose not to give evidence”, as AitchW suggests. They can be compelled, and if they refuse, their statement can, in the right circumstances, be used instead. But I don’t see a reputable retailer refusing to co-operate.

        In 2007/8 I was doing some work for Apple and visited their Silicon Valley offices. Unbelievably there was no cell phone reception on parts of the 280 freeway – less than 1km away from Apple HQ.

  I predict the shop will not prosecute. It will be played as a misunderstanding. All the actors in this little drama are woke to a greater or lesser degree. That includes the media who at the moment are being very cautious waiting to see which way the police and the shop jump before they throw their lot in with Ghahraman, at which point they’ll run interference for her like the Packers’ offense.
  
  And it includes the police who will be looking for any excuse to get out of their moral and legal obligation to impartially uphold the law, with their phalanx of diversity liaison officers probably advising an amicable resolution.

  I thought a major point, perhaps the point, of the justice system is to hold people to account for their actions. For perpetrators, that usually entails a degree of embarrassment and loss of future opportunities. It’s not an unintended side-effect but part of the punishment.
  
  But no, apparently “conviction could affect my (theoretical) career or ability to travel overseas” is enough of an excuse for weak judges to literally pervert the course of justice. Sickening.
