“I look at that issue and I go ‘well co-governance historically – or co-management in previous National Party governments – has been really around local iwi working with local government and central government on the management of local and natural resources. But what we’re now talking about is co-governance happening within the sphere of public services.
“If it is genuinely about co-governance of the delivery of public services, that’s something that I feel uncomfortable with.”
National’s view of the Māori Health Authority, for instance, was it would not lead to better outcomes, he said.
“We personally believe that we don’t need two systems to deliver public services, we need a single system that ultimately has enough innovation and components in it that can deliver and target for people on the basis of need. It’s a pretty simple sort of view of the world.
He said it was a “challenging” topic, and the prime minister and government needed to make the case to the public if it was going to push ahead.
“I think there is a real need for us to have a genuine, high-quality conversation around co-governance … when you don’t take the people with you, and you don’t frame up what it’s about, as a result you leave people behind and it drives more division.”

Māori own the water because this country was settled by consent, not conquest, under the Treaty of Waitangi.
Article 1 gave the Crown custodianship, not ownership.
Article 2, for the avoidance of all doubt, retained, for Māori, absolute control of our waters, our land, and all domains.
Article 3 asserted the right that we would have equality of opportunity with white New Zealanders.
Those three undertakings by all New Zealand governments have been constantly breached.

Perhaps the test of Luxon and the National Coalition’s intent will be measured by whether or not they retain the present Maori Advisory Council (chaired by Tipa Mahuta) which presides over Taumata Arowai, the Water Regulator, and whether they remove Mana o te Wai Statements (for exclusive Maori use) in the context of delivering public services.

Is John Tamihere using the same Treaty as Christopher Luxon?

  This “take the people with you” philosophy is nothing but an idealistic pipe dream. Surely Luxon doesn’t think that radical Maori activists and their mob, that are stirring up racial division and hatred, can be convinced after a few hui and some cups of tea and scones? They will never agree. Their goal is decolonisation – they want to extinguish us Europeans from Aotearoa and get “their” land back. Compromise is not on their agenda, and neither should it be considered by Luxon and his ministers.

A small, rather minor point – someone speaking a the Hui but not being helpful?

Anglican Church archbishop Don Tamihere addressed the crowd as one of the opening speakers on Saturday morning.

    The absurdity of this is unbelievable.
    
    Many, if not most, of the concepts in the treaty were unknown to Maori before the treaty was negotiated and written.
    
    Using the Maori version is as insane as translating the bible from English back into Hebrew etc to make sure the Hebrew version is correct.

      Apparently under international law the treaty in the language of the weaker party is taken as correct. One had only to tweak the meaning of the language that has only oral scholarship until the time of the Treaty, (That is meanings were imprecise.) and voila, Maaori never gave up sovereignty.

        No, in interpreting the intent of an agreement where points of difference may arise between the parties, the travaux preparatoires (preparatory works) need also to be considered. This includes in the case of the Waitangi treaty any document in English that may be relevant, and in particular that which formed the basis of Henry Williams’ translation into Maori. Some argue that the Littlewood text of 4 February 1840 which is in James Busby’s hand is the authentic English text. (Others say it is a back-translation.)
        
        For the British, the treaty had one over-arching purpose: to obtain by peaceful means the consent of Maori to the establishment of British sovereignty over these islands.
        
        For Maori, the treaty provided the protections of British law. Some also saw it as offering enhanced opportunities for trade.
        
        I think the so-called “principles” are a blind alley, which is probably the real reason why they were left undefined when they were first rather foolishly incorporated into legislation (thanks Geoffrey Palmer, yet again).
        
        The treaty is what it is: a relic of the early colonial period long ago superseded by self-government and universal suffrage. It is not our “founding document”. As a parliamentary democracy, our founding document is Magna Carta. The Waitangi treaty however offers nothing for the future except continuing antagonism between the majority of New Zealanders and the tribalist elites.

        Clearly Maori don’t agree. Close to zero % of Maori can speak the language on a functional level or are interested in learning.

      The whole point of the treaty in 1840 was to agree on how Maori would become British subjects.
      
      180+ years on this has gone through so many contortions that we’re now looking at making the British (ie. white New Zealanders) Maori subjects.
      
      That is what the Huntley king means by Maori ruling for all NZ. It is turning the Treaty completely upside down.
      
      That is also what is intended by 3 waters etc etc.
      
      The sad thing is that everyone loses. Maori don’t “win”.

    If only the Political and Activist Left would also engage (instead of trying to curtail discussion and calling people “white supremacists” to belittle them or shut them up etc), perhaps the we all could (as a nation) have an informed debate and move forward together, respecting and agreeing with the best parts of what both sides want (and identifying those other contentious parts to have ratification and further dialogue on).

  1. In order to secede from the government one must have already ceded sovereignty.

      The agreement is what is written in the document at the time.
      
      Palmer and his government enacted his “Principles” clause. In line with the principle that any government can not constrain the actions of any further government, these “principles” can be removed by the present government.
      
      Either you have the ToW with the three articles and they mean what they said – end of story – or you start messing with them as Palmer did and this can be overturned by any subsequent government. This is what the present government should be doing.
      
      New Zealand needs some clarity and that is what David Seymour is trying to achieve; Maori don’t because it stops their gravy train and their feeling of being hard done by forever.

  Government has been quick to write legislation or policy referencing the TOW principles as have Maori when things don’t go their way or they don’t get what they want.

  Plus they will now have to fund wars in Europe, the ME and maybe elsewhere (Taiwan?).

    Of the nation’s 63,000 public servants, 28,000 work in the Wellington region. (See https://www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350119091/wellington-braces-massive-impact-public-service-cuts-loom#:~:text=Te%20Kawa%20Mataaho%20Public%20Service,live%20in%20the%20Wellington%20region). As you know, untold thousands of people (50,000?) commute into Wellington City from the Hutt Valley and Porirua every workday, including many who also commute from the Kāpiti Coast and Wairarapa.
    
    Let’s say 10,000 of those daily commuters are public servants. That means only up to 18,000 public servants actually live in Wellington City.
    
    Now, as we all know, the participation rate in Wellington City at the local elections in October 2022, was 43.28% (see https://www.electionz.com/LGE2022Returns/ELT47WG22_returns.htm) – let’s not concern ourselves with special votes and late enrolments. So, 43.28% of (say) 18,000 is 7,790.
    
    Okay, let’s also say that, being educated, politically aware people, 8,500 of the 18,000 public servants voted (47.22%). Across the six wards, a total of 70,289 first preference votes were cast, meaning about 12.10% at most were cast by public servants.
    
    Hopefully, this puts your ridiculous statement to rest for evermore.

IMO she is being pushed by the Democrats to run for POTUS but not VP. The Dems could not use her to try and control Trump when he is President.
Trump will be wise to this. Just imagine, a Democrat controlled Republican President!

Did anyone else watch the hyped-up Black Clash last night between rugby and cricketers past and present?
The “alternative commentary team” kept raving about how exciting it all was but there was little to no crowd involvement in their presentation.
Turned it off in the end.
Listening to people in a commentary box talk amongst themselves for three hours got a bit tedious,
And the cricket wasn’t up to much either.
Wondering what the point of it was – apart from fundraising.

The Chinese set three rules for the event.
Competitors must not;
(a) Trample on flower beds.

This Newshub story about protests in Germany is a bit odd.
The story includes an allegedly ‘related’ video which appears to be about the German Farmers protesting about the anti-farming policies dreamed up by their insane government, but the story claims that thousands are protesting against the AfD, who are apparently just like Nazis because they want to deport illegal immigrants.
I can’t say I’m completely on top of what Germans are protesting about, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there are just as many Germans who would like to see the back of illegal immigrants as there are who are taking to the streets to protest against people who’d like to see them gone.
And what that has to do with German farmers protesting about anti-farming policy from their government, I have no idea.
Oh, forgive me if I don’t have much time for people who bandy the “far-right” label about. Similar to those who label people “racist” because they don’t like dividing a nation by race, it’s the people throwing those labels about who we should be worried about.

If only they took the time to check out the current polling chart for the parties in Germany, they would see the CDU (centre right) and the Afd parties enjoying a surge in support whilst the SDU, govt led, (centre left) their coalition partners the Greens and the Free Democrats in a sharp downward spiral. Clearly the policies of the Afd are resonating with Germans who are concerned about illegal immigration and why wouldnt they be.

  What an unbelievable story. The girl is clearly a trained surf lifesaver, and would be exposed to trauma in that task. She is also old enough to serve in the military where she could also be exposed to unpleasant events. The school’s actions are indefensible, particularly as they appear not to have consulted the parents or the girl before making their decision.

  The school may have a point. A point that they are not able to make public, but possibly based on observations for hours a day several days a week. It is reasonable and responsible for the school to assess risks. But not reasonable to relay a decision at pretty much the last minute.

    Maybe. Or maybe the school just thought that they couldn’t be bothered with the hassle if the pupil did go troppo, and didn’t bother to consider the specifics of this particular young woman.
    
    Put another way, the school councillor considered how s/he would have reacted personally in the face of the stabbing incident, and didn’t stop to consider whether others might be more resilient than him/her.

  However another question, why are schools these days routinely organising significant overseas trips for their students in this time of climate change ? I hope none of the student travellers or staff taking up this jaunt were part of the climate “strikes” we saw last year ?.

I have just read Andrea Vance, again, as I was unclear of what she was trying to say the first time.
What I believe she is trying to say that today’s Politicians should answer the media people s questions because that is what they are there for.
Umm – I am not sure that that is what they are still there for anyway, as we have seen the many lies innuendoes that get twisted from any comment the new Government or for that matter any Political source makes no matter who or what they say.
For the last 6 years they so called political writers did everything they could as a Left Political Party to denigrate any other than left wing political views.
And I and a majority no longer care what people like Vance, and her ilk say or do.
Go get a real job Vance, if anybody will employ you towards their bankruptcy.

If Ukraine capitulate then Russia will take Ukraine and conscript the Ukrainians into fighting for Russia as he has done for the occupied areas already taken and line up on the next target for his expansionist agenda (likely baltic states). Internal Affairs, most notably uses “Aotearoa” as a replacement for “New Zealand”, presumably as the Maori for New Zealand. This might be by choice for any number of reasons. As a government agency are you free to use whatever other te reo you like for New Zealand. The reo should be accurate, inclusive and not discriminatory.

Otakou marae kaumatua Edward Ellison from South Island Ngai Tahu says Aotearoa originally referred solely to the North Island. South Island Maori have and had a different name which included the land in both North and South islands.

Consider also the te reo word for the land of New Zealand and as stated in the Maori Te Tiriti version signed is “Niu Tirani” or actually “Nu Tirani”.

The solution and more inclusive is to swap out use of Aotearoa and use Nu Tirani or the South Island Maori name. At the least wider consultation should be made as appears not to have been done for the default use of Aotearoa.

  This old fool replaced a hot water cylinder.
  The labour costs and profit on the cylinder are ridiculous. Quotes from $2300 to nearly $3K. My cost? $1150 plus my labour.
  Now the old one shit itself after 3 1/2 years. The manufacturer would not honour the 5-year warranty because I am not a registered plumber. Not naming company!
  With my mechanical knowledge I can run rings around a plumber any day, even gasfitters.

Covid – more than 8,000 new cases in NZ in the last week, with 50 dying within 28 days of a positive Covid test. (Some of these people could have been on their last legs because of other conditions, of course).

Canterbury and the Auckland health areas seem to be the main areas of infection.

After staying out of the Covid debate on Kiwiblog, my experience after the virus swathed through our household yesterday, is that folk who liken it to a light dose of flu don’t their arseholes from their earholes.

The chemist who sold me tests said there had been an upsurge in general flu’s etc, as well as of Covid, and that this was probably related to foreign tourism getting back to full flow after the shutdowns in the Labour era.

You can’t stay isolated from the world for long.

    I was at the concert too with my oldest daughter. Paul Ubana Jones was on before Patti.
    And compared to some of earlier concerts I went to of his, that was good. Though the sound system there is atrocious – especially for that concert. Maybe echos off the walls or not taking into account the effect of people being in there.
