I find it extraordinary that Jacinda Ardern doesn’t know what the Treaty says. You can read the translation of the te reo version into modern English (by Professor Kawharu in 1987) here.
It is a beautiful document. For the PM’s benefit, Article 1 says the Queen is sovereign, Article 2 says everyone’s property rights are safe, and Article 3 says we all have the same rights and duties.
It may have been ignored, perverted, and exploited at various times, but that is not the Treaty’s fault. As written, it is a wonderful basis for a nation.

Seymour should rename his bill to –
The New Zealand Citizen Agreement [1]
Article 1 says the Sovereign is sovereign
Article 2 says all New Zealanders’ property rights are safe, and
Article 3 says we all have the same rights and duties.

Perhaps also
Article 4 the New Zealand Government is the prime agency of government and is secular

Removed from the Treaty of Waitangi – but a treaty between “Crown” and citizens, which the Treaty is not, being between Crown and Maori.

  This was like inviting the Mongrel Mob to take control of the Ports of Auckland.
  Kawharu put a spin on his interpretation of the Treaty to massively favour Maori, which is just what the Tribunal and claimant troughers wanted. Inside job.

    I think there is a lot of good to having an all-embracing rule that the government is secular with no state religion. The prayer which opens Parliament could be easily modified. We could then do away with a lot of the tedious Maori wailings which accompany things down to the opening of even an envelope. There would be no allowance to make things like schools Muslim friendly.
    I cannot see any downside.

      Sorry but it just can’t be done. There is no hard and fast line between the sacred and the secular in human affairs.
      The Soviet empire which was explicitly atheist raised all sorts of monuments and statues to their cult heroes and entombed the preserved bodies of their leaders like the Egyptians did to their God-King Pharaohs.
      In communist China Deng Xiaoping has a impressive memorial shrine.
      The Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. is a recreation of the Parthenon with “The Great Emancipator” enshrined on his throne like Zeus.
      I could go on.
      Even in good old New Zealand the ANZAC ceremonies are rituals calling on the blessings of the ancestors.

    Te Ao Maori – the Maori worldview, often the religious world view – trumps Christianity and other religions in most cases and is for example written into law (like Water Services – Mana o te Wai) while Islam and everything else, with respect, isn’t.

The Unbridled Power of Te Mana o te Wai
The sheer scale and magnitude of the mechanism that lies at the heart of the Three Waters reforms is mind-boggling and threatens to totally overwhelm the water services structure.
Despite lying at the heart of the Three Waters reforms, Te Mana o te Wai statements have remain largely obscured from public view but they carry such unbridled power that they threaten to overwhelm the entire water services structure.

The proposed Te Mana o te Wai statements could also be used by mana whenua to express their interest in participating within the broader water services delivery system. I see the statements as being holistic, enabling Māori to express a broad wellbeing approach, consistent with a Te Ao Māori approach to such matters, including economic, cultural, social and environmental expectations.
Such statements could contain economic aspirations with respect to Māori enterprise and job creation, particularly – but not exclusively – in areas related to mātauranga Māori expertise. This would require response from the water services entity as set out above, that does not prescribe solutions, but would present the shift in integrated partnered delivery that in combination with the other legislative settings above, that would be a material step change to current arrangements.

This is clearly the broadest possible approach that could be adopted – anything and everything can be included without limit.These statements can of course be issued by [only]mana whenua – defined by the Bill as being the iwi or hapū holding and exercising, in accordance with tikanga, authority or other customary rights or interests in that area.
When Taumata Arowai, the new water regulator, was asked if they maintained a list of mana whenua they responded that they did not but instead pointed to a register of iwi and hapū maintained by Te Puni Kokiri. That list includes over 1200 iwi and hapū – each with a statutory right to issue a Te Mana o te Wai statement to the relevant water services entity.

This unbridled expression of kaitiakitanga given to every iwi and hapū in the country and funded by ratepayers threatens to totally overwhelm the water services entities. And of course this is all completely untested. No-one has any idea whether this is workable until the system is implemented – at which time it will affect New Zealand’s entire water infrastructure.

  And of course, NZ includes areas claimed by more than one iwi. Undoubtedly, every self-asserted iwi gets to make a mana whenua statement on such areas. Where differences arise, no doubt court action would result. At taxpayer expense. For both sides.

Seems very strange to ask a new government about her own responsibilities at the time. Has to be an agenda, but what?

Marama Davidson, co-leader of the Green Party, has promised lawfare. Looks like the Waitangi Tribunal claim of a breach of the treaty relating to the Maori Health Authority is the first local cab off the rank. A Crown response is required by the end of the month. Not a lot of time for a new government.

There are also UN applications made or coming up about wind turbines and personhood for whales.

Plenty more coming. Ms Davidson has promised. More fun and way more headlines than reading and responding to the 500+ pages of the Independent Electoral Review that arguably is more important to Maori.

  I personally find the claim to the Waitangi Tribunal rather disingenuous given when I needed a specific MRI for possible cancer diagnosis prior to Christmas, I was asked by my GP did I have any Māori decent as the appointment request could be accelerated.
  On receiving the diagnosis, I did in fact have cancer, and that urgent surgery was advised to prevent the spread and to ensure a much better outcome. This time the consultant asked if I had any Iwi affiliations, as due to theatre assistant shortages at Christchurch Hospital I would have to likely wait 1 ½ months, I may get an earlier slot.
  To ensure my best possible health outcome, I paid for the surgery myself privately, so get a little pissed off when I see articles suggesting Māori are disadvantaged in our health system – The reality is they are not disadvantaged, quite the opposite.

We have student activists now trying to leverage their interpretation of the Treaty to stop any oil and gas exploration. Can guarantee they will still want their settlements and other handouts funded by god knows how.

Is anyone slightly concerned that after spending brazillions on Reduce Speed to Zero, NZTA has apparently nothing to say publicly of a multi-national corporate promoting the eating of their fast-foods while driving – ’It’s good to be the driver’. The campaign focuses on the summer roadie, particularly the unwritten rule and universal truth of ‘Driver Tax’, the driver’s irrefutable claim on whatever the passengers are eating.

      Cabinet is not consensus in their decisionmaking. More than a few Ministers have said later that the lost the argument on specific policies. I believe they still have majority votes on most issues, but under collective responsibility, the decision is always expressed as a consensus one. If the Minister disagrees, he has to resign.

  Whenever you see on TV a facsimile of the “original Treaty of Waitangi ” you see a piece of paper that is moth-eaten, water damaged and fading away. Really is only a matter of time before it disappears. Need to make sure all those signatures and marks are saved.

A Newsroom article supporting the King Movement and Maori autonomy manages to reference every British fault including slavery. Only problem is that the UK outlawed slavery on 1809 and in its colonies in 1838. At the time of the ToW slavery was forbidden in the British Empire and widespread in New Zealand. The chiefly system in Maoridom has continued. Is this really what the Maori in the street wants? From the river to the sea, all the perks for me? The peasants might want to stop worrying about the Kiingi’s mana and start asking questions – such as how do I get my children educated enough to get a real job?

  If slavery was widespread in NZ in 1838, there must have been tribes still owning slaves when the Treaty was signed. If the Treaty guaranteed property rights, and Maori didn’t cede sovereignty, does that mean Maori are still entitled to own slaves? Does the Crown have a duty under Te Tiriti to return this property to Maori?

  Which means, transparency — so get rid of the excuse we have for a media. What you’re reading is a tiny distorted lens into what’s happening. And block every person on here who seems to feed off your anger and distraction — starve them.

      There was a time when South Africa was really big buddies with Israel. So much so the SA would train Israeli pilots. Also assist in development of nuclear weapons.

  Yup, here we might know someone who heard of a serious incident when chatting in a pub, but any South African family will have a whole catalogue of them.
  
  For me:
  * Two of my childhood playmates were done for murder (one was hanged).
  * My mother was robbed at gunpoint at least twice.
  * My cousin’s husband was highjacked and thrown in the car boot, taken to a remote location where he was beaten up and dumped in a ditch for dead. He survived, but spent months in hospital and still has a limp.
  * Three of my mother’s elderly friends were murdered in their houses. One was tied up live and naked, and put in a bath of boiling hot water where she died.
  * My sister in law has been robbed at gunpoint. Twice.
  * On another occasion, people broke into their house at night and helped themselves to food and valuables. They went into bedrooms where people just stayed in their beds pretending to be asleep. Kids wouldn’t sleep in their own beds for a few months after that.
  
  I’m getting bored now. Can I stop?

        Minto has spoken of his disappointment in the ANC and that the “liberation struggle” has brought wealth for a few black elite and poverty for the majority.
        
        But this certainly lacked the vigor of his previous ranting.

        Apartheid was not introduced in one hit, but rather piecemeal.
        
        There were two main purposes to apartheid, depending on how you break things up:
        1) Uplifting the Afrikaners. Prior to 1948, Afrikaners were, generally poor in both income and education. Job reservation and social programmes targeting Afrikaners saw a huge rise in Afrikaner fortunes. Many choose to forget that communism was strong amongst 1920s Afrikaners. The Nationalist Socialist principles of Germany appealed to the 1940s Afrikaners.
        
        2) Partitioning of society along racial grounds to aid (1) as well as to improve security. This is what lead to many things including the Group Areas Act which split residential areas by race.
        
        IIRC, the Group Areas Act was mainly enacted in 1950 after the Natal riots where Indians and Zulus had a good go at each other with many deaths on both sides. It was decided that the only way to resolve this was to split up areas by tribe, race or whatever to prevent these events.
        
        Many people incorrectly think that the Group Areas Act was just a land grab to kick blacks off the best lands to make them available to whites. Not true:
        1) The absolute best land in the country for agricultural purposes is Natal (now KZN). This is where the Zulus lived for hundreds of years before whites arrived and still live today. The Zulus were never kicked off this land. How do we know it’s the best land? Well the Zulus were, and still are, the most powerful tribe and this is the land they took for themselves.
        2) Ditto the second best land held by the second strongest tribes: the Xhosa (Xhosa are not a single tribe like the Zulus but rather a group of tribes).
        3) People of all races were kicked off there land here and there to tidy up a messy picture. For example my grandparent’s farm became an Indian group area. Their Indian neighbours stayed, but my grandmother (my grandfather was dead by then) got kicked out. She went to live in an area of town which soon became multi-racial (with a blind eye turned towards it).
        
        Nothing excuses there being some massive damage caused by these policies, especially in District 6 in Cape Town and Sophia Town in Johannesburg.
        
        District 6 really damaged the Cape coloured middle class and Sophia town the booming black middle class in Jhb
        
        The latter got rebuilt as the working class Afrikaans suburb of Triomf – boosting Afrikaner fortunes at the expense of blacks.

        The boers were particularly badly treated by the British after the war. They had returned home to destroyed farms and lost families. They were economically cut off. Many moved into the cities and took the lowest most demeaning jobs just to survive. Once they took over the government they assessed where their greatest threat came from and that was the rapidly urbanising Africans. Many of their laws were to protect their voters. This also allowed them to accumulate some wealth.

New Zealand First MP Shane Jones has hit out at the content of a leaked document from the Ministry of Justice on the Government’s proposed Treaty Principles Bill, suggesting it’s a “manifesto” of “phobia”.
The document, also known as a legal bid, was sent to various Government departments for consultation.
“The Bill will… change the nature of the principles from reflecting a relationship akin to a partnership between the Crown and Māori to reflecting the relationship the Crown has with all citizens of New Zealand. This is not supported by either the spirit of the Treaty or the text of the Treaty,” the report’s author said.

Minister of Justice Paul Goldsmith said: “This is a draft Ministry of Justice document that has not been seen or considered by Cabinet.”
ACT leader David Seymour said that the meaning of the Treaty of Waitangi has been twisted to give different groups of people different rights and that New Zealanders were “never consulted on this”. He wants to clarify the Treaty’s principles, he said.
Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Jones said: “Let’s be very careful, no one is altering the existence or indeed the wording of the Treaty… There seems to be an odd mixture of Treaty, iwi mania rippling around at the moment.

I find it extraordinary that Jacinda Ardern doesn’t know what the Treaty says. You can read the translation of the te reo version into modern English (by Professor Kawharu in 1987) here.
It is a beautiful document. For the PM’s benefit, Article 1 says the Queen is sovereign, Article 2 says everyone’s property rights are safe, and Article 3 says we all have the same rights and duties.
It may have been ignored, perverted, and exploited at various times, but that is not the Treaty’s fault. As written, it is a wonderful basis for a nation.

  Watched interview with Shane Jones. He’s right on the mark. The govt draft paper is meaningless and authored by some unknown and insignificant functionary. PolicyPhobic policyists and MSM making a lot of noise over nothing, well.. to increase their advertising audience. No paper is worth any concern until it’s a final Cabinet paper. And then, you have the whole parliamentary consultative committee process to go through. Plus, when you read the draft principles, they’re not anything that’s not in reality already practiced by parliament.

Through the years there has been a reoccurring commentary on the fact that Maori incarceration rates are about 5x the rates of the rest of the population.

Yes, that is true, but it is worth digging a bit more to get some value out of the numbers.

The majority of the Maori offenders in prison are gang members, but the vast majority of Maori outside of prison are not gang members. Therefore if we just look at the stats above then we’re really burdening general Maori numbers with the gangs.

There are approx 9000 gang members in NZ of whom about 3700 are in prison. That gives gang members an incarceration rate of approx 280x the rate of the general population. Clearly those will distort any picture.

If we remove the gang members and look at non-gang Maori (working on the assumption that 3500 of the 3700 gang members in prison are Maori), then there are about 1500 non- gang Maori in prison out of a total non-gang muster of approx 6000, then that would mean non-gang Maori incarceration rates are only about 1.6x (60% more than) the general population.

Sure, 1.6x is far from brilliant, but it is way better than 5x.

It really underlines that there is a gang problem that is distinct from being a general Maori problem.

There has been a lot of push to view gangs as an acceptable part of NZ culture, especially Maori culture. To allow gangs to shelter behind being Maori is just giving them room to grow. This is not good for society in general, but it is far worse for Maori.

      They are generally unfit, drug and alcohol addled, low intellect, disorganised, and cowardly and rely on their appearance to instil fear.
      
      They would be gassed in about 90 seconds.
      
      Their safety net is that the cops are constrained by law from putting a bullet in their head.

        The general population is unfit. But the major thing is that the general population is very squeamish when it comes to brutality and violence.
        
        In a no holds barred confrontation between, say, the Army and gangs, the Army would beat the gangs quickly. Even the cops could do that.
        
        But that’s not the society we are in or how they are presenting themselves. They are interacting with the general population who is shit scared of them.
        
        If you want to hypothesise about civil war, then we’re talking about the general population picking up weapons. Outside of a few ex-military and maybe deer stalker clubs, I doubt most NZers would do well against gang intimidation.

        Nothing: Sure, physical size counts for nothing in the age of guns. Health counts for little either.
        
        The thing that counts most is having the guts to actually pull the trigger. That is where people who have lived with violence and brutality their whole lives have an advantage.
        
        Do you really think you’d shoot someone out of hand? Could you stab a person in the guts with a pitchfork?
        
        It is one thing going ALL CAPS on a keyboard, it is quite another to actually do so in real life.
        
        That is why I say people with previous military experience are at an advantage. They have the benefit of thinking of the enemy as a target – not a person. Hunters will have a bit of that too.
        Even still, having been there, shooting someone is not something I would wish on anyone.

        From the Washington Post, reference to a famous post WW2 study of soldiers’ unwillingness to kill.
        
        Grossman was committed to helping the U.S. military become more effective in fighting wars. He revealed that the Army has to train its members to kill because most people do not want to kill other human beings. He cited a study conducted by the Army after World War II that discovered that in combat only 15 to 20 percent of soldiers fired their weapons and an even smaller percentage fired to kill. The Army then changed its combat training to desensitize soldiers to the humanity of the enemy. The new training was effective, and as a result, 55 percent of the infantrymen in the Korean War fired their weapons, and 90 to 95 percent fired them in Vietnam.
        
        Whether or not the original study was ever replicated, whether or not the increased willingness to shoot arose from successful psychological conditioning or because Asians were more ‘other’ than Germans to US soldiers, I don’t know.

        Studies like this have delivered the same result again and again: soldiers with insufficient training have lacked the willingness to kill for a long time.
        
        In the American Civil war, the low number of hits during volley fire was often put down to lousy weaponry. However it has been shown that statistically this could not be the case – instead the majority of soldiers fired a metre or more over each others’ heads.
        
        The same held for WW1. Many soldiers did not shoot when they should have and only shot enemy when their lives were in danger. My grandfather was one of these. He shot 3 Germans in East Africa but only when they were about to shoot at him and he could not hide away. He felt guilty about shooting them all the way to his death in the 1960s.
        
        The biggest problem when your soldiers don’t shoot is that it massively reduces the effectiveness of the force. You still feed them and transport them but they are not doing their job properly.
        
        What my grandfather really should have felt guilty over was that by failing to shoot more enemy he weakened the whole army. He let down his comrades and the war went on longer.
        
        But modern armies train people far more effectively. The enemy is just some meat in the enemy’s clothing. You’re shooting washing – not a person.
        
        And yes, making the enemy “other” is useful too. The last thing you want is to be thinking of him as a person and how his mum and girlfriend are going to cry when he doesn’t come home.

        Gangs will create counter-gangs of various levels of size, strength and organization. In a very real sense that’s what the police and military are.
        Don’t forget that in any conflict between gangs and the military or police it will be literal cousins fighting cousins.
        The best way to bring those gangs under control will be through their brothers, cousins, aunts uncles and grandparents. That means Iwi.

      Imprisoned gang affiliates increased from 1,262 on 30 June 2010 to 2,737 on 28 February 2022. Most affiliates identified as Māori. The Mongrel Mob and Black Power had the highest numbers of imprisoned affiliates. During this period their affiliates increased. As at 31 May 2022, there were 2,686 gang-affiliated people in prison.

        The numbers seem to:
        A) have gone up rapidly in the last few years.
        B) vary wildly according to what criteria are used to measure.
        
        The lower numbers might me for gang members who admit to being members of gangs.
        
        The 3700 number I saw included those where prison staff had also linked people to gangs through observed behavior. I would expect this is a far better reflection of reality.
        
        Unless we use a common basis for gathjering the numbers, then the numbers are close to meaningless.

Reuters reports that NATO “exercise” Steadfast Defender 2024, will begin on Monday, January 22nd (today), and will run “through” May, which means until June. The deployment will include 90,000 troops, 50 ships, including aircraft carriers, more than 80 combat aircraft, including fighter jets, and over 1,100 combat vehicles, including at least 133 tanks and over 500 infantry fighting vehicles.

This is the biggest NATO combined arms “exercise” since REFORGER 1988, back when the USSR and Warsaw pact were still in existence. In other words, this is the biggest NATO troop movement since the end of the Cold War.

A couple of thoughts…..
1. Only 133 tanks – that’s not many?
2. What could possibly go wrong?? False Flag event as Biden heads into election time and Trump is put behind bars.

  My citizen force unit in South Africa was Natal Mounted Rifles, a tank unit (it is common throughout the world that cavalry and mounted units became tank units as horses were phased out and tanks were phased in).
  A tank is a prick of a thing to move. Moving 133 of them is a massive logistical exercise requiring maybe 70 tank transporters doing two trips, maintenance people etc – all adding up to around 10+ soldiers per tank.

      Back in the real world no patriot systems in Ukraine have been destroyed, there was $20k damage to one in May 2023 and some more unspecified damage to a still operational system in the huge attack of early Jan.
      
      However Ukraine are running short on missiles for their patriot systems and so are having to ration their use. But they have cheerfully used them to wipe out a whole lot of Russian fighters/bombers and AWACs in recent months to the point that Russians airforce has basically stopped flying in Zaphoresia/Kherson. Russia has responded to Patriots by largely abandoning the almost entirely ineffective ballistic missile targeting of Patriot defended areas.

      Reality: Iran supplied forces fired 15-20 ballistic missiles at Al Asad base, 2 got though, injuring a few US servicemen (concussive effects) and 1 Iraqi and doing some damage to base. That’s a high interception rate of a relatively huge attack, and we don’t know how many patriot missiles were in the battery – they may have simply run out of missiles to fire.

      Patriot has been continuously upgraded for over 40 years and current PAC-3 variant’s guidance package (which is the high tech bit on the little changed 60 year old rocket tech) has demonstrated amazing real-world anti-ballistic missile effectiveness against very expensive and supposedly cutting edge ballistic missiles like the Russian Khinzal.
      
      There is huge international demand for this proven system as a result of how well it has performed in Ukraine and Middle East against increasing belligerence of various evil empires, with licensee production being ramped up fast in Japan, USA and Europe.
      
      Iron dome is more appropriate for low altitude slow missiles, only up to about 10km and 10-20km range, whereas Iran and Russia have now figured out that they do best flying high altitude ballistic trajectories – out of range of small cheap defensive missiles – with very high speed terminal descent.

Or maybe we still have standards and hope that our council will do what it is supposed to (well when it comes to important stuff like pipes etc).

In the beginning of 1995 I lived in Auckland and was considering moving to Christchurch. A few companies flew me down for interviews and one took me for a two hour drive through various parts of Chch, the Port Hills etc.

During that time I saw one bit of graffiti, compared to lots all around Auckland. Auckland had given up.

Here we still bother about reporting leaks because we have a hope that our council will do something about it. And they do. Report a serious leak in Chch and it will generally be sorted within hours.

The reason that Wellington only got 270-odd reports of leaking pipes (less than one a day) is not because Wellingtonians are “chill”, but because they have given up. What’s the point of wasting your time reporting stuff the council is not going to address?

    I have only ever reported problems in Chch via the website and they have, generally, been resolved quite efficiently.

  Use of vehicles by along cultural lines does not surprise me. There appears to be an existing propensity for special folk of a similar cultural background to park on front lawns, mount kerbs, park the wrong-way facing traffic, drive with arms hanging, park in disabled parks and generally ignorantly block access to others. KĪngi Tūheitia lit a ceremonial fire last night at Rangiriri as the final act of Saturday’s hui-ā-motu at Tūrangawaewae marae.
After lighting the fire at the Kāpura Ahi ceremony, he invited rangatira from te iwi Māori, rangatahi and tauiwi to light four other fires representing the four winds, Te Tari o te Kīngitanga said Sunday in a release.
“As Te Kiingi reminded us, the best protest is to be Maaori – to be who we are, live our values, speak our reo, care for our mokopuna, our awa, our maunga.”
Yesterday’s hui-ā-motu was attended by more than 10,000 people who witnessed an historical moment and reference point in future race relations in Aotearoa, he said.
“People came because they felt the wairua of the Royal Proclamation issued by Kiingi Tuheitia and they contributed to the korero and also brought their ideas for how we can build unity and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
“Of most importance to Kiingi Tuheitia was the voice of rangatahi and their views of the future and how we shape it.”
Archdeacon Simmonds said there was a wide range of views expressed via speeches and submissions and they would be captured in a written report to be shared with te iwi Māori in the coming months.
“We will take those ideas and messages to the nation through hui and other forums as the momentum builds for a reawakening of our mana Motuhake,” he said

    There was certainly a big crowd at Tuheita’s marae. Many got not have been 10,000 – a suspiciously round number – but the video is of a seperate, later event. Maori taking the opportunity to push their barrow, aided by a complicit media. I note that at least 5,199,000 NZers stayed away.

Can anyone of my fellow Kiwibloggers who are court room lawyers, or anyone who works for the Ministry of Justice, or the police, with knowledge of home detention/curfew seriously tell me how it works and if you really think it is a punishment and deterrent?

The reason why I ask is I have seen a lot of ‘ankle jewellery’ eg the electronic monitoring anklet ,proudly displayed around my city as the weather lends the usually male offenders to wear shorts and thus the public can be in on the status. I see criminals wear them at the supermarket, walking along the CBD toting shopping bags, a friend even had two ankle bracelet wearers sit near her in the cinema a few weeks back., I have seen ankle bracelet wearers freely entering my local Maccas. Again, how are these activities any kind of punishment and any curbing on their daily routines?

Me and the whanau have just returned from our sojourn up north to the warmer climes of a beach holiday at the family bach and watched in a bemused fashion the tenants who rented our neighbour’s bach. There were two couples staying and one of the males strolled around with his ankle bracelet on open display. Upon chatting to the group we ascertained they travelled around 280 kms from their home town. The ten day stay by Mr Anklet was spend heading out fishing on the boat, drinking beer and BBQing, heading out on day trips to explore the wider area, hanging out at the beach,checking into pubs etc from our friendly chats. He complained at not being able to swim due to the bracelet. He was no trouble during his stay but again, a nice holiday was had by him and his Mrs and mates and I fail to see how this is a punishment given he was able to go about the business of a lovely holiday without any impediment. Can anyone explain this?

I don’t know about you lot, but I’m a tight arse and don’t like paying anymore than I have to, especially when it comes to giving money to the council or other government entity. To my recollection, I haven’t had a parking ticket ever, closest was an invoice from Wilsons Parking that got waived because I knew the right phrases to use.

Winston Peters interviewed on The Country and gives yesterday’s Maori day of protest a serve.

Mentions the Maori King should be above politics (like Queen Elizabeth and now King Charles) hence why Winston didn’t attend yesterday.

Also delves back into the past era when previous Maori politicians who better understood the Treaty compared to today’s Maori activist politicians and activist academia who are reinventing it.

Also gives Golriz Ghahraman a serve for using the “mental health” excuse for her shoplifting.

Which got me thinking. Now being a Country Show we better understand the mental health issues that farmers are going through (eg their livelihoods are dependent on variables such as the weather, paying higher interest rates than house owners, demand for their products depending on events outside of their control, animal welfare, compliance, red-tape, idiot Labour Greens politicians interfering with their operations, pine trees taking over farms and destroying communities etc) … now that is a lot to contend with. Whereas Golriz Ghahraman was very well paid and didn’t have any Ministerial responsibilities but she suffered from mental health issues caused by … work pressures? social media pressures from the right wing? If this is so how come her own colleagues didn’t have any concerns for her own well-being and moved her to other duties or ask her not to stand for re-election?

Anyway I digress, Winston’s interview starts at round the 4 min mark.

I am a Spark customer, have been for decades.
Today for the first time I received an email from Spark “reminding” me that my account was due for payment in a few days.
This, as far as I can recall, is the first time such a “reminder notice” has been sent by Spark, and I am pissed-off.
I pay my bills on time.
In full.

I cannot understand why Spark runs the risk of losing customers by sending out such begging letters. Maybe they have a new Credit Controller or something.

Has anyone else been on Spark’s hitlist ?

  I have 3 phones…two are with ‘Spark’ and the other with ‘ONE’.
  Never get any reminders from Spark, but every month ONE always sends a threat….that if the account is not paid on time, “an $18 late payment fee will be charged”.
  Where they get that extortionist number from is beyond me!
  That’s why my Spark bills are always in the hundreds, but ONE is only ever $33.
  That dopey Jason Paris can get stuffed.

    Late payment fees and prompt payment discounts – pretty sure the Commerce Commission determined these to be illegal. The power companies dropped all prompt payment discounts and just baked them into the price.

  We have internet, landline and 3 cellphones on our account.
  Cellphones always post paid as is the internet bill. Now they want cellphones to be prepaid, after all of these years of post paid!
  I don’t know why. I pay my bills as soon as the invoice is emailed.
  So I may as well cancel all cellphones on that account and go straight out prepay?

What a snore test The Panel is. Everyone agrees with everyone else. Lots of mutual back-scratching and congratulations. Not one tiny bit of wit or acid or independent thought. They are even recycling the boring old chestnut of the cost of school uniforms. How often have they done that?
I gave RNZ a fair chance today but it’s like listening to John Campbell clones on an endless loop.

A good comment from Winston about Golriz. It is a sad event, sad for the country and sad for politics

Peters said today: “You know, we can all line up and be judgmental, and it is a crime, if that is what is proven, it still has to go before the court, but in the end, it’s a sad event.

“Certainly, [it is sad] not only for the former MP involved but also for the image of politics in New Zealand. So others might be cheering from the sidelines about this, but I am not. I just think it’s disappointing for our country and for her personally.

“And frankly, when all is said and done, I hope whatever the problem is, she gets over it,” he said, referring to Ghahraman.
