But relating to the pigeons and improving one trait, I have on occasion (usually on the throne when things are moving slower than tectonic plates) pondered whether personkind’s evolution may be, from a certain level, in their own advances mentally, and AI may be the beginning, to lift evolution further and faster than waiting for nature to give us a yet bigger brain (to weigh down the body).

And if “Abolish Te Tiriti” is the interpretation of what Seymour is keen to establish, we are in trouble and will end up in violence rather than clearer understanding of a Treaty that has been already altered enough that the current misinformation obviously seems to mean some of the population is trying to protect from alteration a Treaty that judiciary through to politicians, and pressure groups, have already altered.
These people are keen to protect a 1980s straw-person Treaty for the original Treaty (be that the “straw-man” English version or the “decoy” Maori version)

  I am happy that more and more people are becoming aware that the post 1975 Waitangi Tribunal Treaty is a rogue version. It was further tampered with by the addition of “Forestry and Fisheries.”
  We have been ripped off for nearly 50 years. The Gravy Train must come to a grinding halt!

      90% stolen? That’s not a number I have heard before. Does it include all of the applications heard and determined in the Maori Land Court? And does it suggest the decisions are invalid? Even those very many where the precursor to the hearing was a formal meeting of owners.
      
      That would definitely be interesting and should be the subject of an independent deep dive into the minutes and the court orders. There are rather a lot of them, and they are very carefully documented and publicly available. Important records but not easy as common for a single person to have a dozen or more names – similar or very different. But they all had to be recorded.

Apart from land confiscated by the Crown as a “fine” for armed revolts, the majority of land was sold, sometimes several times over by unscrupulous “traditional owners”. The Government had to appoint a Land Commissioner to sort out the mess and ascertain who owned what.

      This sort of stuff is just bizarre. How did European colonization “Steal” a modern industrial society from a neolithic Polynesian one?
      The only way this sort of narrative is maintained is by the fantasy that all Māori are victims of modernity, when as I have said many times, Māori are now richer, healthier, longer lived, better educated and more numerous than at any time in human history.
      The last 170 years advanced Māori and Māori society forward at least 5000 years. Otzi the iceman (that guy the found in a glacier) lived in a more sophisticated age than the Māori of the 1760s.

      “They” and “Maori” are mythical entities, ephemeral and indefinable. There’s not a single Maori alive without “pakeha” blood, genes, ancestors, history and traditions.
      
      You’ve made a word up “ropatu” – I assume in your ignorance you mean “raupatu” but I wonder if your ropatu includes land that shyster Maori sold several times over to different pakeha, and if it includes lands stolen by conquest between tribes, which ironically was the main reason so many chiefs begged Queen Victoria to bring the rule of law and make them all British subjects.
      
      Subjects, not partners – the difference is important. To suggest that the Empress of large parts of the world would enter into a partnership with illiterate savages seeking a way out of the incessant bloodshed is the stuff of fantasy.

        And for context The Louisiana Purchase encompassed 530,000,000 acres of territory in North America that the United States purchased from France in 1803 for $15 million. NZ is 66 million acres at the arse end of the world so would have been practically worthless at the time of the treaty signing.

  I amok with a bit of violence to achieve what is right . So yes if Maori want a fight I am up for it . Pity there isn’t a chance to organise a convoy in support of the fishing competition, pickaxe handels optional. Before anyone gets upset it’s why I joined the military for as did my father in 1939 and his father in 1914. They stood up for their rights and in support of their Governent amd their fellows.

    But I am disturbed that so many Maori (and sympathisers) have misunderstood Seymour’s long-explained position: that the Treaty needs to be reviewed, mainly for 1970s add ons
    
    The US equivalent, which I have bored people silly with a few times, is the Supreme’s ruling on Roe/Wade, saying the right to abortion is not in the Constitution, which has created globe-wide anger about abortion, rather than anyone pointing out the purification of the founding document of the United States of America.
    Even here media pestered Christian Luxon about abortion, with him replying that the laws here are set in stone, but no one gave any consideration of looking at our “founding document” for additions in interpretation which are not in the original.
    
    So some people misunderstand Seymour’s intention, or wilfully misinterpret it, and seem eager to “go to war” as Willie Jackson says, without foreseeing they are setting up an imitation of 1930’s Germany.
    Haha! – Goodwin’s Law. But still that is what so easily is happening.
    
    And “Christchurch Call” should comment on the online misinformation, but they won’t – perhaps for reason’s of “conflict of interests”.
    They seem to be set-up stem online action once bad shit has already happened: they will suppress
    a madman’s live-video of mayhem as they commit it, but won’t do anything about the online crap that triggers it.

  I’ve often wondered, but never been told, how absolute the Treaty is considered to be. It doesn’t include a mechanism for its amendment. Is it simply a matter of Parliamentary super-majority if we wanted to amend, or even rescind (and possibly replace) the Treaty?

      This is precisely the point that needs to be made calmy by people with limited baggage, to the general public. The media will run interference by saying dumb things like “Seymour wants to re-write the Treaty”, but that needs a continuous stream of level heads pointing out that the Principles of the Treaty already attempted an effective re-write, and now we need to actually codify these principles before they get away on us—and away from the actual text and intention of the Treaty.

    Let’s not be too hard on Māori describing rivers (and other things) as alive. There is no single scientific definition for what is “Alive”, but considering that a river moves, uses energy, responds to changes in the environment, has a beginning and an end and is clearly full of living things it’s not a bad metaphor.
    If you have some sort of philosophical knife that can perfectly slice metaphors out of descriptions, then I would like to see it.
    The Americans describe the Stock Market as alive and that isn’t even a physical thing, but it can get scared and excited and is even dominated by “animal spirits” presumably the totemic animal of Bull and Bear.
    I’m not exactly a cultural relativist but let’s not pretend it’s just “One and Done”.

    It’s absolutely a religious belief. It is a kind of animism or pantheism – the belief that everything in nature is divine or has some kind of supernatural force. So rocks have a spirit, mountains have a spirit, rivers have a spirit, etc. etc.
    
    If someone wants to believe that, fine. Just don’t expect me to respect it without physical evidence and don’t teach it to my kids as if it were real.
    
    The NZ Bill of Rights affirms our freedom of religious belief, and that includes freedom to reject religious beliefs.
    
    (Oh, and notice that we once again have a “Maori cultural expert” who is at least implicitly speaking on behalf of all Maori. I am sure many Maori would tell him to take a long walk off a short pier.)

  I naively thought at the start of the article maybe the company had actually used some random Māori words that could be considered inappropriate eg “Kai” eg food instead of toilet set
  
  But no they had just used standard NZ place names like Te Anau for a version of a towel ring. This is just what multiple companies do. Do it’s okay to have the “Clutha” or “Gore” reclining lounge suite, but don’t dare to use any Māori town name?

    Those Maori names have their own innate ‘life force’. You need to get to grips with the ever-increasing emphasis on Maori mysticism as a phenomenon in its own right. What it is all supposed to infer is that ‘the Maori way’ is better than ‘the Pakeha way’, so that when ‘decolonisation’ and ‘re-indigenisation’ reaches its zenith, we will all be so much happier than we are under the ‘selfish’ ‘neo-liberal’ ‘Pakeha way’.
    Of course, the pre-European ‘Maori way’ often entailed the conquest of neighbouring tribes, with land taken and captives eaten or put to work as slaves. Life was harsh and brutal, infanticide was common; these were not the ‘happy noble savages’ fantasy that the Leftists are foisting on us.
    
    ‘Decolonisation’ and ‘re-indigenisation’ are a very real ‘thing’ being driven by the Left. Example here –

        Of course we can and should ban things we don’t like, because that is the function of laws, in that they reflect what is right or wrong.
        
        Banning the ideas in books is very different, in that, for instance, being able to read Mein Kampf is a right all curious and thinking people should be able to exercise. Ideas themselves aren’t moral or immoral, it is only actions that have moral value.
        
        Besides, think of the alternative: if we couldn’t read Mein Kampf if we wanted to, we’d have to just rely on someone else’s (probably self-interested) opinion of Hitler and his motivations and his worldview, rather than make our own judgments based on his own words like rational people do.

      Don’t forget, during covid the Ardern government had a back door portal to access user accounts on Facebook. They could get posts they didn’t like scrubbed or hidden.
      
      Not sure if the new government still has this facility, but Luxon has read the room badly on the Christchurch Call/Ardern scam. It’s just another system to permit authority to censor free speech.
      
      Putting Ardern in charge with almost half a million in expenses annually (she doesn’t charge for her time apparently – hahahahahahahah!!) is a red rag to a bull for millions of NZers.
      
      I voted National/NZ First at the election, but always felt Luxon is the wet weak link. This move reinforces that. Maybe he has a cunning plan that plebs like me can’t fathom, we’ll see.

Chloe Swarbrick has been castigated here on KB for chanting “From the river to the sea” on behalf of Palestinians. I am no fan of Swarbrick but there are others who take this stupid approach.
The words “from the river to the sea” do not originate with Palestinians or their supporters, but with right-wing Israeli politicians themselves. The very first principle of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party manifesto chillingly states that “between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty” (Likud Party: Original Party Platform 1977, Article A).

Nor is it just Palestinian sovereignty which is thus erased but, most recently, its very geography.

In an address to the UN General Assembly on September 22, 2023, Netanyahu flourished a placard-map brazenly entitled “The New Middle East”.

Here Israel is depicted as the entirety of land “between the Sea and the Jordan”, while Palestine’s Gaza Strip and West Bank are completely expunged from the map.
Madness on both sides.

      But, rather than guessing and assuming, let’s be empirical as to the respective intentions: Israel is currently committing an actual genocide in Gaza, going far far beyond “destroying Hamas”, so we don’t need to speculate as to what their policy is, we just need to look at what they are doing.

        When Likud or their supporters claim sovereignty from “the river to the sea” they are claiming the land for the state of Israel but it’s fair to assume that Arabs would be treated exactly the same as they are within the current state of Israel. It is not a call for genocide or ethnic-cleansing, merely for a larger state with easier to control borders.

        Well, I don’t know when that deal was offered, certainly not recently. In 2008 Netanyahu said that a Palestinian state could exist, but the conditions were no military or control of its own airspace. In 2017, he said Palestinians could have a “state minus” with Israel maintaining “security control” of all the land.
        A sovereign power may do whatever they choose within their territory and make any deals they wish with any other sovereign power.
        This is a crucial issue that reaches far beyond Israel/Palestine. The Rules Based International Order tells us that Ukraine is a sovereign state and may arm itself and make alliances as it sees fit without any security veto from its neighbors and also that Palestine cannot be a sovereign state and may not arm itself or make alliances as it sees fit because of a security veto from its neighbor.
        That’s a fatal contradiction.
        The rules must be enforced expect when they must not be enforced.
        It’s not so much the morality of it but the stupid double dealing of it that’s the problem.

    The last time I watched TV1 News with any regularity was during the early stages of the reign of the evil fascist Orange Man. I could tune in live on TV1 at 6.04pm, immediately after the top news item, for the delayed airing of the two minutes of hate directed at the Orange Man. The Orange Man Bad piece would have first aired just hours earlier having been produced by Trump derangement networks ABC / NBC / CBS etc. I recall Wendy’s concern after the NBC piece on Orange Man’s literal rounding up of Muslims, Mexicans and women wanting an abortion into secret death camps in western Nebraska. Simon then empathetically nodded at the end of the piece and then moved onto the second news item of the day, which was about Auckland traffic congestion. NY Times.
“Norway have encountered stiff opposition from environmentalists who say that not enough is known about the life at the bottom of the sea to authorise mining.”
“Initially, the work in Norway will involve collecting information about the amount of metals in the seabed and what harm large-scale mining might cause to aquatic life.”

So what are the environmentalists opposed to?
Is it that the research may reveal that the damage from mining will not be significant?
Or, do they just want to maintain the status quo so that they can continue to say the amount of damage can’t be quantified?

  I expect New Zealand will be watching Norway closely. We have a huge EEZ, some valuable resources are known. Taranaki iron sands mining application has had a chequered legal history with court cases brought by groups including local iwi. The latest decision is under appeal by the company.
  
  Chatham Rise seabed has known phosphate nodules – low cadmium and low leachate fertiliser unlike currently used – and tests indicate probably quantities of high value minerals as a byproduct. Iwi have said OK, probably in exchange for a free carry.

  Here’s a little hint. Capitalism drives down the cost of everything. Companies compete to provide the best price to the consumer. In theory, this means that profits can only go one way. Down. If you take capitalism to its final conclusion, there will be ZERO profit in anything.
  
  The way to ensure that you maintain profits is by eliminating/restricting free markets and competition. When Ardern made her captains call to ban oil and gas exploration, who REALLY benefitted? Oil and gas companies…by reducing the availability of the product and hence maintaining its price premium.
  
  I think the way this works is little counterintuitive and hard for people to wrap their heads around. It is similar to how the biggest proponents of banning drugs, are in fact, drug dealers. If recreational drugs were legal and available, there would be little profit in selling them.

As I shut the glass door a thrush suddenly rushed across to capture it, narrowly beating a blackbird approaching from a different direction.
Obviously they are prized quarry.

      The move on Kiev in the early stages of the war was a decapitation strike. Not to hold the territory but to remove the government. Force a capitulation of the rest of the Ukrainian armed forces.
      It didn’t work but it wasn’t a bad plan. Now they’re onto plan B. It doesn’t look like NATO has a plan B after the failure of the summer offensive. Mobilizing all of Europe and American on to a war economy is a fantasy.

  A good question, if the Russkies wanted to they could have nuked Kiev by now. But they haven’t. And they have limited ability to take it out with traditional (non-nuclear) warfare at the moment. Over time, who knows…..maybe they will just carry on with hypersonic bombing from afar. Maybe the Ukrainians will at some stage say I’ve had enough?
  
  So, same reasons as to why NATO hasn’t taken out Moscow yet. They could nuke it (the final war), or they leave it alone. They can’t conquer so why bother?
  
  And, same reasons as to why Russia isn’t a realistic threat to the rest of Europe (apart from nukes). They could attack but not conquer, so why bother?

  The usual course of for a government is that they listen only to an ever-decreasing circle of advisers and fellow-travelers. This ultimately leaves them out of touch with the majority of the population. In a democracy, as we saw last October, these governments are voted out and process resets. In a dictatorship like Russia, there is never a reset. The system adapts to ensure only their ever-increasing delusions are presented to them. In fact, careers are dependent on ensuring that Putin only hears that his ever “play” is wonderful. In fact, the system is so good at filtering reality that even some outside of the system start to believe the delusions. This is evident by some of the commentators here.
  
  So, Putin based his decision to illegally invade a sovereign country without justification based on his fantasies. He puts out his fantasies and the system he had established, gives back his fantasy to him as though it is reality. Putin fantasies of a reimagined Russian Empire and he is defending the Russian civilization from Western degeneracy. He fantasies that the natural affairs of the world is that Russia is at the center of a large empire with other countries orbiting the great civilization. So, he puts out the propaganda that Ukraine had a coup, and the popular pro-Russian government was replaced by an unpopular pro-Western government. Therefore, when Russia sent in the troops the vast majority of Ukrainians would welcome them as liberators and throw flowers at their feet proclaiming their love for Mother Russia and their rightful place as part of a reimagined Russian Empire. This was a lie.
  
  The Russian army is nowhere as strong as he fantasied. Decades of corruption, mismanagement, and simple lies about capability has meant that it is struggling to defeat a united Ukraine armed modestly with Western equipment. Unfortunately, the war will drag on until Putin pulls the troops and goes home. Even if he maintains control of the Eastern part of Ukraine, the greater strategy of keeping Ukraine in the Russian sphere is over – any peace deal will include Ukraine in the EU and NATO. However, I am sure this will be “revealed” to be part of the plan all along by the pro-Putin commentators and some whataboutism for good measure.

    It’s an interesting case, I’ve been discussing it with family who live in the Waikato.
    That region of the country is littered with caves. Some of them are huge, easily big enough to live in comfortably. At least one of them opens up into a massive cathedral-like space.
    In short, it’s very easy to hide if you know the area.

  I was in a science museum near a nuclear power station in Taiwan in December, and I was seeing sections on particle physics, electromagnetism etc. and lots of short bios/pics of almost exclusively old dead white men who contributed to such science.
  I had to note that there was no section on ‘Maori science’, which presumably would be in demand outside of NZ if we only promoted it a little better.

  I found myself wondering how she travelled around the country – by canoe or by walking; where the technology and materials for the rubber gumboots, the steel blade on the shovel, the spectacles, the fibre in the clothes, as shown in the photos and used by many of her 5m fellow citizens, and indeed, the technology which enabled me to read her story, all came from.   The cops had better. Fishermen are usually pretty hard and no-nonsense. They also tend to carry many sharp and dangerous objects. This could be something of a tinderbox if they are prevented from accessing ramps. You also have the issue of parking and leaving your car and boat trailer. Any agro and there’ll be cases of vehicles deliberately damaged, I bet. Taipa ramp crosses Maori land, I believe (or at least land in question) but Mangonui does not. It’s at the end of a legal road.

My advice to Luxon and National:
Realise that however you try to suck up to and ingratiate yourself with Labour, the Greens, the woke and the media, they will always hate you.
Use fewer words. Use brief, succinct answers. You decide which questions to answer and when to stop answering them. Just terminate the press conference when you want to. The media will jump on your every word so restrict your words.
Don’t hand out any plums to the Left – no sinecures for anyone.
Appoint a couple of attack dogs to keep reminding everyone how incompetent the last government was, how much money they wasted and how little they delivered.

      I agree, it was the kid gloves treatment.
      I am pretty sure it would not extend in the other direction, if a prominent Maori leader was assaulted on a marae they would be taken down.
      Yes -cameras in everyone’s faces as it happened and I remember feeling bad for Key and just bad in general as the awful Titewha Harawira who was escorting the manuhiri on was saying “stay calm John, stay calm” as Key smiled awkardly with his arm in a sling at the time to top it off.
      The neat twist is that the POS is a relation to the Harawira clan.
      Surely, since you can’t be sure a knife isn’t coming next, the super-soldiers around the PM could at least give a good squeeze of the attackers testicles from within the press of the crowd.
      The response was just so insulting and weak.
      In contrast, when I was at an event with Jacinda, there were multiple people with ear pieces and obvious bulges in the armpits of their suits, and plain clothes officers quickly dragged off anyone who even said “F–k you, Jacinda!”.

Luxon scored a major own goal by referring to the ‘Treaty referendum’ in these terms: “we think it’s divisive”. Way to take a Leftist buzz word and then use it yourself to describe an aspect of your own coalitions policy platform.

A glossary of a few key terms for Luxon and WM and any other Nat who wants to deploy Leftist buzzwords. Unless you are using one of these words as per its correct definition – see below – don’t use them:

‘Divisive’ = the separatist / co-governance agenda.

‘Stokes division’ = Te Pati Maori, the Green Party, the Labour Party, the mainstream media.

‘Racist’ = Any race-based system of governance that gives special rights and privileges to people based on their ethnicity. This includes race-based electorates.

‘Hate’ = Manifested in the words and countenances of the likes of Debbie Packer, Rawiri Waititi, John Tamihere, Marama Davidson.

  This is a simple, but critical debate. As a country we either have a free and liberal democracy where all races have equal rights and responsibilities, or we continue down our existing path of further entrenching Māori Separatism/Apartheid.

    I think there are many ‘corporatised’ New Zealanders who have been conditioned not to speak up, not to question, not to put ‘it all on the line’ for their own personal principles. They are corrupted slowly and bit by bit, to the point where they are a key component if the corporate machinery themselves, and moreover have a lifestyle dependent on maintaining the high income they receive as a consequence. They know what happens to people who don’t ‘toe the line’. So I think Seymour is going to be out there on his own, copping the insults and all the slings & arrows of the Left. Only if sufficiently courageous leaders emerge, or if the ‘corporatised New Zealanders’ feel their personal income and assets are becoming impacted by what is happening, will he cease being a lone voice. I guess the contempt from the ‘corporatised New Zealanders’ towards Seymour comes from them thinking he must be mad or eccentric to speak up and cop the wrath of powerful entities, it’s just so different from what their lived experience is. And remember – quite a few of them do very, very well out of the Treaty gravy train, particularly those from the legal community.

  Almost 300,000 homes use gas from fossil fuel fields for heating, hot water or cooktops. Only some regions receive gas by pipes, while others rely on gas bottles.
  
  In NZ, piped gas is methane, but bottled gas is as far as I know LPG. Two different products, and not interchangeable.

The USA and UK have their plates more than full trying to sort out the Houthis.

But the Houthis will be crapping themselves now that NZDF is sending a team of 6 to the area to secure the shipping lanes. Yeah, right!

These 6 staff will apparently “be involved in precision targeting and would not be going into Yemen.”

I wonder how a team of 6 from a different military can really help.

In general a team of 6 would include:
* One senior command officer. Main job is to go to meetings and hob-nob – not actually do the work.
* One senior NCO (a warrant officer) to do all the administrative stuff like organising places to sleep, sort out logistics etc etc.
* Four actual people to do the work (likely middling/junior officers and NCOs).

So that really puts 4 pairs of boots on the ground.

It is difficult to see how 4 people trained to operate in a different military are going to interact usefully.

If they were forward observers (ie. special forces people inserted into Yemen to help call air strikes), then a small team could be useful. However that has been ruled out.

To me, this looks like they will be acting mostly in an observer/training capacity rather than calling the shots. Also a bit of chest thumping for an NZ audience.

If someone has insights or a contrary view I am very interested to learn.

    Do we actually have personnel in UK involved with Ukraine training?
    The defence www says that 66 personnel were sent to UK for training but that ended in July or so.
    
    There are apparently up to 95 deployed in logistics for Ukraine, but that is tail-end (ie. outside of Ukraine) and not operational. Likely they are just doing stores and driving trucks from UK to the Ukraine border countries.
    
    66 or 95 is a body of soldiers that can actually accomplish something.
    
    The 6 in Red Sea don’t show up on the defence www yet. They are supposed to be operational, but deploying 6 does not achieve much past being there to wave the flag and observe.

        NZ was about 1/800 of the WW2 Allied strength (100k out of 80M).
        
        The 100K NZ troops were deployed as battalions that could actually function as an entire unit. ie. could be given a theatre of operation and completely do the job.
        
        Now? The UK is putting around 36k soldiers on the ground. Plus 2 aircraft carriers etc, so a total force of maybe 40k personnel. USA must have at least 10k personnel there. Add up all the others and probably 60k: NZ has 1/10,000 of that. Woop, woop.
        
        6 can’t even deliver tea for the the ops room.

        Probably better to think of this from the perspective of the percentage of Commonwealth and Empire. The Brits, Aus, Canada, South Africa and India, especially those deployed on operations. Then it would be 100 k out say 5 million. Around 2%, which was pretty impressive given the population of New Zealand. In Bomber Command more like 5%.

  You obviously have very strong views on international relations, and that is a good thing. Maybe if more New Zealanders held such strong principles then the country would be in a far better condition than at present.
  However, do you not think it important for us to show some sort of solidarity and support for our natural allies and friends?
  New Zealand has historic, economic and cultural ties with the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia which go back over 200 years.
  We are their friends, for God’s sake, and they are ours.
  Despite what may people believe we are not part of Asia, we are inextricably tied to European history and culture and beliefs.
  And we have a duty to help out whenever, wherever and however we can, no matter how modestly. Even if there are only 6 New Zealanders going.
  You can’t expect to live down here in the bottom of the South Pacific and just ignore the rest of the world and not contribute.

    I think you are starting to get to the heart of some sentimental feelings about foreign policy that many New Zealander have and that could lead us into making some very serious mistakes in the near future.
    The world changes and we must change with it.
    Queen Victoria is a long time dead. Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are not the Duke of Wellington and Lord Melbourne. Trump and Biden are not Roosevelt and Eisenhower.
    To be sure, New Zealand is not in Asia, which makes it very difficult to explain why we get involved in Asian adventures (Vietnam 1964 – 72, Afghanistan 2001-2021 and Iraq 2003 & 2015) at the behest of European and American powers.
    The chances of New Zealanders allowing ourselves to be drawn into another war in East Asia is very real, and our distance from the front lines will not stop very serious consequences from reaching our home front.

    But sending 6 people because that’s all we can muster shows weakness, not strength.
    
    I expect the individual servicemen/women will act professionally and do their best, but nobody is going to be saying “here come the Kiwis” like they did in WW2.
    
    All “allied” forces are a bit stretched. Even the Americans. They are having to pull USS Gerald Ford out of the Med. They are struggling to serve in multiple theatres simultaneously.

  It would be nice, but being that self defence has to be proportionate you could only use it, even if it was in your hands, against a deadly threat like another firearm presenting immediate threat or someone literally in the act of trying to take your head off with a machete.
  And unlike the USA, where the cops won’t even book you for an obvious defence of life even where death is caused, I am sure NZ Police will charge a person in any case and ‘let the courts decide’.
  Even the process would be its own punishment.
  Police have for years been unable to do a proper job on many fronts, but they sure don’t want anyone else stepping up to the plate!
  
  But yes, if I ever was in a situation where there was a firearm I would hope to have a firearm too. Since mine are all locked away as a responsible owner, it would have to be someone on my own property and I have justification to use them, and it would be quite a race to: get hidden key, go to safe, unlock, take out, get key for ammo compartment, take out ammo, load firearm.

  As I stated before we don’t really have the right of self-defence in NZ. Unless a person has the means then the right doesn’t have much force. I believe everyone should be able to carry a firearm – concealed or not – in order to defend him or herself and property. Unfortunately, that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

        An important part of integrating the French and German economies was to make it impossible for one to rearm against the other. After 3 wars in 70 years, each worse than the last, that was very important. the 1951 coal and steel treaty was kind of a work of genius.
        I’ve suggested similar ideas for the Israeli Palestinian conflict on this blog before and gotten shouted down. Far too much religious lunacy. But if two sovereign states won’t work then it will either have to be one integrated state or permanent war.

An interesting and thought provoking case where a corrections officer is being charged with assault for pepper spraying a prisoner.

So many things to unpack…

The first thing that pops out to me is that NZ prisons are not being run with enough discipline.

The prisoner calls the corrections officer “brother”.

Bullshit. There needs to be an extremely clear distinction between the inmates and the staff. There should be deference at all times. No “bro” or first name terms. It should be “boss” or “sir” or whatever.

Breaching this convention should be an infraction with possible punishment (like failing to address an officer correctly in the military).

When it comes to obeying prison rules (eg. not taking towels into your cell) then officers need the tools to be able to compel compliance. The prisoners should be under no illusion that they have wiggle room to negotiate or bend the rules.

A warning, followed with a pepper spray for non-compliance seems reasonable to me.

If the prisoners get a taste of charging corrections staff, then we can only expect to see them being more emboldened and the tenuous grip over prisoners to become weaker.

    Egypt and Jordan are basically allies and they are very close to Saudi Arabia.

    I think Oman and UAE are close too.

    I doubt that regional conflict is going to expand more than it is now. (Although look to Israel pushing Hezbollah back beyond the river where they agreed to with the UN but broke that agreement immediately- Israel will create a buffer zone. Good fucking job)

      NewHampshire has a weird system with majority of primary voters registered as “Undeclared” but in reality actually partisan and taking advantage of system than allows them to fuck with their opponents if they want to, meaning that they can vote in republican or democratic primaries if they want to try and screw over the party they don’t like and revert to ‘undeclared’ immediately afterwards.
      
      As of Dec. 28, there were 343,192 voters registered as undeclared, with 262,262 registered Democrats and 267,905 registered Republicans.
      
      So in this primary exit polls suggest there were about as many Undeclared (a large fraction of which will be crypto-Democrats) as Republican registered voters voting. Democrats aren’t having primaries this year, and TDS is massive, so are likely even more inclined than usual to see Democrats gaming the system to try and screw Trump.
      
      And still Trump managed to take it by 12 points.

      Just because it was resolved peacefully does not mean it was resolved well.
      
      If you play too nice and cuddly with people like this then they just repeat their actions and others are encouraged to try it out too.
      
      The whole thing could have been resolved with tasers and pepper spray in 5 minutes.

WTF is up with HDPA?

Yesterday, she was highly critical of people who watch MAFS.
Now she comes out this arvo and says…. Margo Robbie didn’t actually deserve an Oscar for playing ‘BARBIE’. The movie ‘sucks’ apperantly.

Something very stange has happened to her over the holidays if you ask me 🙁

  Agree Maggie. I thought she was going a bit nutty before Christmas, but listening to her off and on over the last two days confirmed something is going on there. Didn’t even bother to tune in tonight. Much the same with te news on TV. Sitting in the formal lounge, 20m away from the tv while my partner subjects herself to the nightly BS propaganda.

Why is it “they”. It is an it!

Given the location of Wellington airport, I am surprised they haven’t had more penguins in the past. Many penguins, including blue penguins often go a bit inland for nesting etc.

  I’m pretty sure the penguin knows what it is without the Stuff typist having to affirm its pronouns. In fact, if the penguin knew what the kiddie doing the typing was on about, it would probably think humans are a lost cause.

  In the old days ‘it’ was the gender neutral pronoun when referring to small animals, birds, etc. But it would seem to have been too ‘inaminate’ to be used to refer to humans or large animals.
