It is disturbing that Michael Hill stores are still being robbed in smash and grab raids in broad daylight. Bayfair store was robbed yesterday at 3pm after being robbed twice last year.

This can’t go on. What’s being done about it?

Two things from me. First I’d like to see the use of reasonable force being allowed to defend the stores. Security guards, even passers by, should be allowed to grab these robbers and use reasonable force to do so. If you are smashing and robbing a store then you should have very little rights.

Secondly I’d like to see these people caught and receive long sentences to deter this criminal behaviour. I include those people receiving the stolen goods.

This can’t go on. We used to be a low crime very safe country where people could shop in peace and security. We need to restore public order immediately.

  The display cases need to be made of polycarbonate or bullet proof glass.
  Something that takes a bit of breaking.
  Change the Law so the little arseholes doing this can be punished – and not with a bracelet. Forget the bleeding hearts and the “I have rights” people.

    A police spokesperson said one person has been taken into custody following a robbery at a store in a shopping centre on Silverdale Street at about 11.20am.

  Scott – you have hit the nail on the head. Take away their market by giving the receivers of stolen goods a prison sentence. These thugs breaking into stores wear their punishment as a badge while those buying the stuff would not do well in a prison.

  Security guards need more than the right to detain people. A supermarket security guard got stabbed yesterday trying to stop a shoplifter. They need weapons. Ideally shotguns, but at least tasers or pepper spray.

  There should be a very high bar on prosecution of ‘excessive force’, ‘assault’, ‘false imprisonment’ or other violence by non-police on people commiting crimes – pretty much anything goes except doing damage to someone who is already captured or incapacitated.

After all that noise leading up to the election, one might have imagined it would be as simple as flicking a switch-who’d of thought it wasn’t quite that easy. I think you will find people are becoming much more brazen and arrogant across the entire world, ever since the pandemic. I think most here probably could relate to that devastating combination of frustration and confusion. People just don’t like being told what to do. Libertarians are just like that but the average confused/conspiracy theorist/trumpist ding a ling is less detailed in their delusion. The backlash against rational thought that many right wingers around the world have embraced has caused a great deal of confusion to the entire population of the world. The utopia libertarians desire is an unreachable, non-compatible fantasy, (ever tried shoving the round plastic piece into the square hole?). Hope that sheds some light on the subject…

The ugly tip of a massively growing iceberg – ‘Tangata whenua have authority’: Protesters vow to continue blockade at Northland fishing competition.

Police attending. Doing nothing. Two standards. Two laws. Co-governance run by one of the ‘co’s’. Get used to it.

Of course, it has happened before but now there is a new brazen, a new confidence, a new ugliness.

Who is to blame? The elite. Not the ‘brown’ elite only but mainly the gutless, smarmy, smart-alec, do-gooding white elite who think that they are progressive, cultural leaders.

It is not about the sad bias in the many social indicators – the crime numbers committed by Māori, the jail numbers, the kids killed. It is about stinking pride and power. The disdain for the ‘unwashed’. The over-weening, superciliousness.

    All New Zealanders know from the media is that a bunch of thugs (portrayed as something at the opposite end of the spectrum) have prevented or tried to prevent a fishing competition that has been running for 40 years. The chief thug, portrayed as standing up for “consultation” is a twice convicted person prone to violence. He has been shown to have a contempt for NZ law.
    
    Since then, nothing.
    
    But if a fisherman, or the organisers of the contest want to make a statement – to provide news – they can’t unless the MSM show up and allow it. It seems to me that the MSM have arrived at a consensus that they will just ignore it. And that seems to be the Police policy as well. Let a few thugs rule the roost, claiming all sorts of bullshit, and “monitor” and “observe”. I would like to see some action from Mark Mitchell – maybe he has taken some already, but if so, where are the MSM reports of such action?

  My understanding is that Taipa is being blocked only. Not Mangonui or others. But those are the two most popular ramps in the Coopers Beach area. The Taipa land ownership has always been argued over. My bet is this was a compromise reached. Let them have their little protest and boaties can launch elsewhere. Their threat to block both ramps (and others) never eventuated. I dont like it, and the rozzers are looking weak as piss (as always), but I can understand the compromise from a political and peace-keeping pov.

  I suspect that there’ll have to be some violence before we send an end to these sorts of protests, or at least see the police end them for us. The protesters have indicated that they believe the law doesn’t apply to them, and the police have indicated their reluctance to remove them so the rest of us can go about our lawful business. I don’t see the protesters moving aside without being _made_ to step aside.
  What’s left for the rest of us when the systems we have aren’t prepared to uphold the law?
  If/when that happens I think I know whose side the police will come down on. I think I know how legacy media will portray the events as well.

  • Wikatana Popata of Ngāti Kahu told 1News all of his whanaunga (relatives) from up north are supporting the initiative, which could have a flow on effect.
  
  • The man who assaulted schoolboy witnesses to a drunken Auckland robbery, committed by two of Mana Party leader Hone Harawira’s nephews, will be re-sentenced after the Court of Appeal today quashed a home detention term.
  Wikatana Popata – who once assaulted Prime Minister John Key at Waitangi – was last year found guilty of two charges of assault and sentenced to six month’s home detention for the 2011 incident.
  At a trial in the Auckland District Court, Popata was acquitted on a count of aggravated robbery.
  His friends, brothers Tohora Harawira and Enesi Taito, were given prison terms. The brothers beat up a man on Great North Rd in Avondale, robbing him of his iPod. Popata assaulted bystanders so they wouldn’t tell police about what happened.
  
  In 2009 he was convicted for assaulting Mr Key outside Te Tii Marae by pulling his jacket and sentenced to 100 hours’ community work.
  A year later Popata led Ngati Kahu protesters in an occupation of a Far North District Council-owned reserve.

  Why isn’t there a ‘National Hui’ on Maori combating Maori crime and respecting the law? Surely the disgraceful Maori crime statistics and huge Maori prison population erodes the mana of not just the individuals concerned, but the Maori people as a collective entity? Where is the mana in robbing, assaulting, murdering, ram raiding? Is a crime wave and the absolute blind eye being turned by the Maori leadership compatible with ‘Te Ao Maori’? If yes then why would New Zealand want a bar of it? If no then why don’t Maori do something about it? The truth is that people like Tuku ‘Underpants’ Maori are only interested in what they can take from productive ‘New Zealand’, they don’t give a hoot about the abject moral state of their people.

We’ve known all along what Luxon and most his front bench are about – recall Luxon’s pleading with journalists that “we want to be more diverse”, and Willis’s recent statement that the Nats view the treaty as a partnership.
  
  In a recent interview, Peter Hitchens described UK LINO and the UK Conservatives as “two huge corpses lying across the way”. Much the same could be said of our two main political parties, neither of whom represents the ordinary people of NZ.

It was National’s John Key who brought the Māori Party into his coalition government (alongside Act!) in 2008. And it was Key who sent Pita Sharples to New York to sign the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.     I think Seymour’s next job after sorting out “the Principle” is a new law clarifying the rights of protesters, and the rights to get rid of them while undertaking a lawful business.
    
    I cannot see a problem with someone protesting by standing near with a sign, and maybe even engaging in disslogue, but standing in the way and preventing anothers legal and lawful movement is assault. And even under current law, that should be dealt to. But we obviously do not have a police force willing to do anything, unless of course you use the wrong pronoun.

    • Are the waters a resource allotted to Ngāti Tahu in a Treaty settlement?
    • Are the police instructed to just stop violence, or to turn contestants around?
    • Does the “rahui” apply to Maori fishing also, or just pakeha fishing contestants?
    • Is 40 years within bounds of pakeha customary rights, or how long need that be?
    • Are pakeha customary rights even a thing?
    • Have protesters combined fish numbers concerns. ‘pakeha’ competitions, and the contesting supposed Government policy – so no one can evaluate the fucking aim of any of this?

        It’s not the disruption people support or not, which is an effect, it’s the underlying issue being protested that is key, which is the cause. If the cause is sufficiently significant, then the effects will be more acceptable to reasonable people, who may even sympathise to some extent despite the disruption.
        
        It’s not an exaggeration that the Parliament protest was essentially about the beginnings of a constitutional crisis (going to the very legitimacy and mandate (excuse the pun) of the ruling class, where the government, without any legitimate justification, usurped any remaining vestige of popular sovereignty and imposed draconian measures on a public regardless of the public’s opinion, with universal application to all New Zealanders, and thereby exposed the true reality of our political system, rather than the theory).
        
        In contrast, this present matter is a niche issue concerning only Maori seeking some form of payout and/or advantage, and/or seeking to consolidate their “special” status under the law, perhaps even to engender a chilling effect on future public activities involving the potential “infringement” of so-called “Maori rights.”

        The purpose of parliament protest was not to prevent others exercising their rights (blocking roads). Yes this may have happened in some limited capacity, but was a side effect of the protest. Not the goal. You could perhaps argue differently for the Canadian truckers blockades.
        
        Mens rea is very important when considering whether a crime has been committed. One protest was an attempt to protect human rights. One protest is an attempt to scuttle human rights.

        You may have forgotten, but the government shut down nearly every business for weeks and months due to the brutal policies those protestors were fighting against.

A peaceful protest for two days that has not stopped the fishing competition, that is not supported by the iwi.

        Not my recollection, Ghost, and I attended the parliamentary protest. The people I saw & spoke to were perfectly civil. I regularly walked through parliament grounds, apart from the bit shut off by police. Yes, lower Molesworth St was blocked. So what? The bus route was diverted, everything was ok. A number of businesses closed, on police advice. They could have stayed open.

  Here is the issue. David Seymour has a very detailed approach to his pet treaty principles bill. This includes his sympathies to things like Hobson’s pledge. I have met many racist old dudes, (and the odd lady), who have no idea about Hobson’s pledge and their ideology. They do however have a long running disdain for Maori and their values. This is why he will fail. First of all, National, Act and NZ First all sucked up to these confused and angry people to get the votes, National realised it went too far but needed support from the other two to get in. Huge compromise that is now very hard to distance themselves from. He appointed Seymour to his funny title recently just so he could be more solely accountable to his mad quest. Seymour could in fact be aware of this but his power hungry nature has gotten the best of him, of course. Seymour’s ideas sound wonderful and seem reasonable, if only we lived in the libertarian utopia in his dreams. As we actually live in a reality where Maori have never been on an equal footing with the rest of the population, it is only going to exist as the dream in his confused little head. It will be embarrassing for him which will no doubt just make him more petulant.

  First, the disruption to shipping in the Red Sea of recent months is all because of Israel. We know this because the Houthis have told us their motivations. We don’t need to speculate, because they have been very explicit.
  
  They aren’t attacking ships bound for Israel for no reason, it for the particular purpose of exerting economic pressure in order to attempt to change a policy (something that the US-led nations do as a matter of course on countries that don’t do as they say).
  
  You can support Israel’s invasion of Gaza, but you’ll also have to accept the flow-on effects.
  
  Second, is Israel classifiable as our “traditional ally”? Even if they are, does being a “traditional ally” trump all rational geo-political calculations as to New Zealand’s best interests?

Multiple countries halt aid to a UN agency (UNRWA) after allegations that some of its staff participated in the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas.

Reuters are reporting that Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland on Saturday joined the United States, Australia and Canada in pausing funding to the aid agency.

I watched The Donald’s highly entertaining campaign rally in Las Vegas a couple of hours ago. Great viewing.

While it all comes to an end for Nikki Haley on 24 February, it’s okay. She’s still young; indeed, Inauguration Day 2029 is her 57th birthday.

Mind you, this far out, in my view, it’s hard to see how anyone will get past Vivek Ramaswamy in the 2028 primaries. Tulsi Gabbard (who will be 47 in January 2029), perhaps?

I went for a walk past the Taipa boat ramp this morning – no access and the two police officers there telling anyone that showed up to go elsewhere.

I did note at one point it appeared a single boat had launched from Taipa. I wasn’t close enough to see why that was.

The Police have really misread the mood of the community here – this competition generates a lot of revenue for the area and supports a number of local charities. Allowing a handful of people to threaten that has lost the Police a huge amount of respect this weekend.

If you’re going to pick and choose laws you’ll enforce based on race then you can’t expect to retain the wider communities support.

    Reminds me of that town in NZ-was it Pukekohe? Maori there were segregated and had tons of racism thrown at them for decades. Apparently there is still some who hold racist sentiment from those bad old days, (not surprised). A sad part of our history we will never forget.

  This is exactly what makes a farce of Coster when he said allowing the illegal covid race roadblocks was “policing by consent”

Watched One Spews for the first time in yonks. Noticed a side profile shot of one of the coppers new Skoda wagons. As a car guy, the first thing that came to mind were the large rims- 17-18”s ? and low profile tyres.
Question: why in earth would you specify that combo unless you’re a bloody idiot with no regard for tax payers money? Just look at the average US cop car, steel wheels and high profile tyres. PS: I’m sure they got a good purchase price and ongoing maintenance programme, but as anyone who lives down here knows, euro’s are more expensive to operate than southern hemisphere sourced vehicles. Happy to debate any of the above.

  Albie… The Skodas are Euro, nice and low. Plenty of them have wiped out the oil sumps whilst kerb jumping, so apparently all are being fitted with sump guards now.
  Driving over kerbs not great for those low profile tyres either.
  Must have got them for a great price and the resale should be ok as well.

  Since Skoda is owned by VW, there might be some fabrication in the low emissions numbers but we’ll let that slide for now.
  
  Some of the low emissions is possibly attributed to the Skoda being around 200kg lighter than an equivalent car from most other brands. 200kg does not come from nowhere, so likely comes from using less strong components. That might mean that the vehicles are more prone to damage and will function poorly if the vehicles are needed to do any vehicle vs vehicle maneuvers.
  
  Quite possibly the euro-profile tyres help with reduced drag ant thus the emissions too…
  I would have though cop cars should be built like brick shit houses because they should be able to stand up to a bit of a beating.

Kevn, going down the wasteful spending rabbit hole, how about Helen Clarke’s decision to purchase 105 LAV’s? Good for nothing apart from painting white with UN decals as an expensive exercise in virtue signalling?
Another example of politicians getting in the way of sensible decision making.
Would’ve thought the money could have been better spent on our maritime defence in line with Australia, but what would I know as an ex RNZAF pleb.
