Is it time for the Government to have serious talks with TVNZ over the continued bias of the National Party and their Coalition Partners Act and NZ First.
I believe it is and also believe it is time to cut TV One loose at let them pay for the crap the call news to the public that the taxpayer funds themselves.
When you have people like Simon Dallow and Maiki Sherman calling the shots on what’s happening in New Zealand Politics and tainting the conversation by continually putting their views forward you have to be trying trying to change the the prospective of what is happening and using young journalists to further your views.
So if the people paided to run TV One on behalf of the taxpayer cannot see that what is happening at the our Government owned identity I believe it is time to cut them loose and use the funds that keep them afloat for more worthwhile projects that allows the Government to reap the benefits from taxpayers funds.

  Warren, I couldn’t agree more. Maike Sherman is a disgrace to Journalism. She is so biased towards Labour and spews out her invective against Luxon and National on a daily basis. I also can’t understand why top management of TVNZ can’t rein her and the other Labour lovers on their staff in. Completely agree with you that the govt. should cut TVNZ loose from tax payer funding and let them sink into their own mire.

    She has a habit of referencing the PM by his surname only… Not Prime Minister Luxon, or Mr Luxon, or Christopher Luxon.
    
    I don’t recall Jacinda Ardern being treated in a similar manner when her activities were part of TV One’s daily fare.

        We go on about new lows for New Zealand journalism but that truly was the most egregious beat up I can remember for a long time.

      It was during the 1News ‘intro’ when he asks teaser questions to keep viewers watching: “. . . and what’s the Divider-in-Chief done now !!”…. Childish stuff from a “lead news anchor”.
      
      Did you see Newshub last night? McRoberts introduced an item on Waka Kotahi (he apparently can’t articulate the words “New Zealand Transport Agency”) and then handed over to Amelia Wade who referred to “Waka Kotahi” three times and “Waka Kotahi-branding” twice, but only obliquely referred to an “English name” for the agency (but she wouldn’t say what it was!).
      
      These people are activists. They should get another job. We deserve proper journalists.

        Sadly, Waka Kotahi is still the offical name for the organisation. NZTA is currently the sub title.
        
        The various govt agencies seem to be willfully slow in acknowledging the govts desire for english names.
        
        Just this morning I see the CCC council has approved a whole heap of new trafic slowing measures (speed bumps, cycle lanes etc). They are clearly believers in this shit and want it in before they are officially told not to do it.

        We are in agreement. Yes it was NZTA primarily, Waka Kotahi small prior to 2019. As your screen shot shows. In 2019 it became primarily Waka Kotahi, small NZTA as per the OIA I link to.
        
        Your original statement that NZTA got the Waka Kotahi under National in 2009, while correct, is misleading. They were NOT primarily known as Waka Kotahi until 2019, under direction from the then Labour government.

    Have you looked at their advertising breaks lately? More and more, they’re filled with self promotion of upcoming programmes or pointing people towards TVNZ+, whose line is “it’s free, but you could have to pay for it,” and less with dollar paid advertising. And the more and more breaks on TVNZ+ where they could be taking advertisements, they only get the occasional listing – the rest, again, is filled with self prometon of featured programmes, most of which is second rate garbage. Where’s the self-funding coming from then?

  The problem with Sherman is that she is a self proclaimed activist. While she is not the firebrand in the style of those who lead Te Pati Maori, she does, by her own admission, invokes a style of journalism that challenges the Status Quo.
  
  I don’t mind a journalist that holds those in power to account, and challenges the leaders of our parties, but journalists must do so from an unbiased platform if they are to have any credence with a wider audience.
  
  It’s something that journalism has lost world-wide.

  Apparently the journalism bribe fund was contracted to pay these blunt media instruments like TVNZ for the next two years up to the next election. Very cunning by Ardern and co.
  
  I think the coalition government has to insist that TVNZ show operating cost cutting of at least 7%. All other government departments are having to do this.
  
  To be honest I don’t waste my time watching the 6pm news. Waste of eyeball time that I can’t get back. Used to watch the AM show but not any more since Bridge left. Also only use Stuffed and NZH for sports news.

  Last night’s TV1 news was a shocker. They’ve got some new person presenting politics, and they couldn’t be more blatantly biased against the right…TVNZ’s take on the new govt is that Luxon has caused massive racial division, taken money from the poor, is promoting smoking to the poor, and that the 3 parties in power are bitterly fighting against each other.
  
  All in all, one would conclude Luxon has destroyed New Zealand in just 100 days.
  
  I wish Luxon had gone further, he has been a little puppy so far. The pace of change has been too slow, although we’ve had summer holidays I guess.

    We are being told (loud and often this week) that beneficiary sanctions don’t work and there is a lot of evidence to prove it. Has data been cherrypicked? I’m sure our intrepid journalists will be investigating and reporting back. Ever hopeful, eh!
    
    OK then, but is there evidence to prove that the prospect of sanctions works?
    
    In any case some beneficiary numbers are certainly not working (to coin a phrase) and there has not been much if anything in the way of sanctions for the last several years.
    
    There were however some results from the UK in which unemployed were required to turn up to a central place each day (or face sanctions). Some immediately dropped off welfare as they were already working though not necessarily paying income tax. Sounds like worth a pilot or three?
    
    Not the dole but apparently when UK child tax credits was limited to 2 children, some parents went back to work due to their income dropping ….

        I would say that many are working for cash (I know of a lady that cleans airbnbs, she earns $400-500 per week cash over summer while on benefit.)
        To be fair though, she can’t work full time at present and working legally part time is financially not beneficial.

    He was on newstalkzb with Nick Mills last Thursday morning (think it was) and he was asked all about his role in these PR events on behalf of the government of the day.
    Sir Ashley said he made 300 appearances at the Parliamentary theatre the speaking and advising on these matters. It was his job.

This all came from the US Military/CIA/5Eyes and was repeated in the all the 5EYEs countries as well as those under the US influence in the Western world including South Korea and Japan.

    A few years ago I was on a Jury where serious Assault charge prosecution took place. The person charged just sat there and smiled and refused to comment or anything.
    He knew that there were two of his ethnicity there and they only said two words straight away in the Jury Room – Not Guilty, and that verdict stood.

      My experience on juries is that quite a lot of people are afraid to convict in case they get it wrong.
      
      Your experience shows clear bias. Usually in that situation quite some time is taken in the jury room to discuss it. If those two just sit there with arms folded saying “don’t care, not guilty” then that is grounds for the fore(person) to submit a question to the judge.

        My experience on a couple of juries is that the accused support group sat in the front row of the public area and glared at us. After one in particular was decided guilty by we jurors, I for one (and not the only one) was very afraid to leave the court and the bailiff let us out a rear exit.

        Last one I was on (years ago now) we convicted a prostitute and her minder for party-to-assault and assault respectively, and we were let out the back.

Isnt it interesting that Victoria and Massey universities are the worst off when considering ‘financial difficulties’. (A tertiary commission recent report)
Victoria spent millions on trying to change its name, then in a case of really bad timing spent millions on a Marae and then a senior staffer accused Annah Stretton of racism (in naming a wedding dress).
Massey of course gained notoriety by banning Don Brash who was invited by the students to talk about aspects of the Reserve Bank.
Its encouraging to see that some prospective university students retain the ability to do a bit of critical thinking and are avoiding institutions that provide sub-standard service.
As they say – go woke, go broke.

  I have two kids aged 6 and 7, and every Thursday they spend the first half of the day doing kapa haka. The education system in NZ is a joke and I seriously wonder why I moved back from Australia and am almost at the point of returning back there for the sake of the kids education. We just can’t escape all the te reo crap over here, it chews too far into their education and is promoted as superior when in reality it has very little use in the real world yet takes precedence in their education.

    It was like that when I was at high school 40 years ago. At least 6-8 hours per week spent learning and practising Maori welcomes for sport visits. Pulled out of whatever class we were meant to be in – maths, science etc, (occasionally the compulsory Maori class but that was a free period anyway while the “teacher” did his “weaving of those boards they have in marae’s). Girls of course stood at the back most of the time and kind of swayed our arms. No idea what any of it meant.

Here is an idea.

How about all the MSM do an investigation on the dole scandal? Go out into communities up and down the country and interview these kids that have been on the dole for an average of 13 years. Interview the gang members who are on the dole. Interview the layabout people that intermittently show up for a job wearing pyjamas and gumboots.

Then tell us how much these people are costing the country.

      Thinking about the Epstein case, what would be very interesting to know is what happens to those guards (who admitted to falsifying their time sheets) in about 20 – 30 years’ time.
      Now that they’re out of the prison service, if they spend the next few decades on food stamps working minimum wages jobs or if they pop up in several years’ time in The Bahamas or Dubai living in a penthouse apartment under a false name.
      That would tell us something.

  I don’t know about a “kids game”. I would say a foreign special service assassination is possible but highly unlikely.
  The Russian special services would be looking out for something like that. Foreign agents would have to first locate him and then infiltrate their own people or buy off someone inside. Navalny was a political VIP so wouldn’t have been housed with murderous gangsters who would be easy to buy off.

  The Cook Strait ferries are an essential service allowing passengers (ie citizens, taxpayers) and freight (ie commerce) between our two main islands.
  
  It is too critical a service to be left wholly to the private sector, given the observable history is that the private sector comes and goes from this service, that the service they offer tends to be sub-standard, and that if the private sector were to be a monopoly then you’d have to expect pricing problems.
  
  But meanwhile the current Interislander ferries and terminals are end of life and don’t have the capacity to cope with today’s demand let alone the sensible forecast future demand.
  
  Further to that, the current ferries lack modern safety features, and the terminals have seismic issues.
  
  The ferry procurement seems to have been going well.
  
  The price overruns were all in the terminals. But we still need new terminals. Someone’s going to have to pay for them … and ultimately it’s going to be some mix of the users and taxpayers. Fair question as to whether terminals are the responsibility of KiwiRail, the port companies, or central Govt.
  
  If I were MoF then I would have told KiwiRail to slow the process down while I commission a review, but not cancel anything until I’d had that review completed.

  I don’t care what Israel does in Gaza very much. There is no illusion of living next to Hamas any more. If Israel must level cities to win the war, then that is because the Palestinian’s elected government started that war.
  
  If Israel wants to fight a conventional war to utter defeat of their enemy, it is no different to what our ‘greatest generation’ did against other nations run by sick ideologies.
  
  I actually care more about the Palestianian flag wavers in the west, and the sight of the scum climbing on the tomb of the unknown warrior in London for instance.
  Israel is fighting them on their front door, and in time it might be for the West to fight them inside their own homes. I have no time for Islamists and Jihadist and angry Muslims. If you can’t suppress them and their violent energy, you eventually have to fight them. This is what Israel is doing, and unless we push back in the West at some point too then we concede to them and lose the freedoms we take for granted.
  Seeing the leftist and even ‘gays’ joining the street demonstrations for Palestine fills me with loathing.

  Secondly, where is the similar outrage about deaths in Syria? Myanmar? Ukraine? Where is the dismay at minority Christians basically driven out of many middle east countries over the last twenty years?
  
  If the Palestinians wanted this to stop, all they have to do is give back the hostages – It really is that simple.
  
  Try this on for size. If the Palestinians lay down their weapons, there would be peace. If the Israelis disarmed they would be wiped out man, woman and child in about a week.
  
  Out of curiosity, how would you conduct an open full on war where one side dont wear uniforms or show any signs of respect to protocols like the Geneva convention? There is endless evidence that the Israelis go to great lengths to minimise civilian casualties but what do you do when the enemy builds bases under hospitals and schools?
  
  Finally, and I know how unsympathetic this sounds, the Palestinian people voted for and still support the Hamas leadership that bought this shit storm down on them.

    I don’t believe NZ provides weapons to anyone, but for (for example) the USA, there is a different sort of response to Ukraine-Russia compared to Israel-Palestine, because people view their government as providing weapons to the defending side in one case, and the aggressing side in the other (yes, Hamas started it, I am not denying that. I am just explaining why peoples outrage levels are different in these cases, as this was a question you asked)

  There is no doubt however that things in Gaza look/sound particularly horrible on both sides. It’s hard to imagine being in Israel or Gaza right now as a civilian or a soldier.
  
  There will be wrongs on both sides IMO. And I see no logical way out for either side. Hamas can not “win”. And if Israel continues on their current path it is likely to escalate into a decent-sized regional war of some sort, which would potentially destroy Israel.
  
  I do find it weird that some choose to pick a side and go black & white with their support. There is always 2 sides to every war, otherwise, there wouldn’t be a war in the first place.

    The only escalation which might happen is Hezbollah making a mass attack.
    Hezbollah might have a lot of rockets but they have no AirForce.

    Syria will do squat, Iran is too far away and all the Houtis can do is what they are doing now.
    Most of the other Countries in the ME are on Israels side.

      1. Hamas managed to inflict more than 1,000 deaths within hours using very low tech weapons. Logic says Hezbollah with approx 150,000 higher tech missiles would inflict much more damage and death.
      
      2. Israel has few ‘friends’ in the ME when it comes to war. Who would come to their aid? I say no one. A lot would jump in as soon as it gets real ugly and they see their Arab & Muslim mates being killed. Even Turkey has threatened Israel.
      
      3. To say that Iran is not a threat to Israel is kinda weird. They do have capability to strike. A war between these 2 countries would be a major conflict and they hate each other.
      
      You can call this “alarmist” if you like, but plenty of people warning that this is all possible and the probability getting higher every day. Israel & Hezbollah in major exchanges every day now. So #1 above has already started.

      So Orr called for our border to be opened (which duly happened in winter, 2022)…. then EIGHT months later, Hipkins pretends it’s not open (or he was lying).
      
      This is what Hipkins said to the House in April 2023:
      
      “If the member is arguing that we should open up the border in order to repress wages, which was the strategy of the last Government, then he can mount that argument at the next election.”
      
      Was Hipkins stupid or willfully deceptive in that moment? The border had been open for EIGHT months at that point. Opened by HIS government. How did he not know that ???
      
      So many people were flooding in, we were setting a new record for it. Now, thanks to Stanford, we know a lot of them were unskilled people. Therefore, by the law of Supply & Demand, they were depressing wage growth for our own low wage workers.
      
      Maybe Hipkins was unaware of Michael Wood’s poorly implemented, prone-to-fraud “ACCREDITED EMPLOYER VISA” scheme.

    The real problem was not across the whole country . Indeed the east coast region and north were particularly unaffected.It was concentrated in the poorest , western most areas where the peasant tradition of subletting rented land led to far too many people relying on smaller plots of land , they also had very large families . To survive as a labourer , for that is how many of these folk were employed they grew potatoes on tiny plots , almost exclusively . When the blight hit they were fucked.
    Blight was common inEurope . An awful lot of Germans karked in their own famines , but they hadn’t the luxury of blaming the brits , that didn’t happen ’till Dresden.

  at this time every year there’s pearl clutching stories across te media as the parents send their little darlings off to play school ( university) .
  
  Here’s a thought .
  
  It wasn’t the landlord who didn’t flush that turd . It was possibly yet anothyer ghetto dweller “student” , one of tomorrow’s leaders .
  
  Name and shame her .
  
  Anyway , simple fact .These cretins ( the students) insist on renting those dumps cos they’re where they want to be , right in the middle of party central . If the cretins didn’t rent ’em the landlords couldn’t keep ripping ’em off and they might up their standards .
  
  It’s also a kind of unvirtuous cycle . The “students” are known to wreck and ruin the properties , so landlords aren’t going to commit to bankruptcy turning the slums into princely manors , why would they?

  I was listening. It sounds like the Labour PR machine has had a ring around and told people for God’s sake ring up ZB and praise Robertson. All I could see from him was total incompetence and out and out wasteful spending. Finance Minister…pffft!

Gang man with full face tats robbed a dairy and severed a guys thumb with a machete was on electronically monitored bail at the time of arrest.

He was also involved in the aggravated robberies on:
*August 25 ford falcon,
*Aug 31 a Spark store in Te Awamutu
* Dec 11 a Black Bull liquor store
* Dec 27 Robs dairy in Hamilton machetes off mans thumb

Tahau’s counsel asked for discounts because
he was born into a gang environment and was even named after a gang member and dressed in gang colours from birth, she said. And was high on Meth.

Why should dressing and raising your kid as a gangster get the kid a discount? If someone gets a discount because his abusive upbringing causes his offending then the parents or gang managers should serve any time removed from the offender.

Using meth shouldn’t get you a discount, it should be added on to your charges. It’s illegal.

And why was this gang member serving bail when he and his family are full time gangsters. He should have been in state care.

  Did they prove beyond reasonable doubt that this chap was pushed into the life of crime by his parents? If so, there is a court case of child neglect that needs to be addressed. Evidence should be there. Yes? Or is there zero evidence to support this story?
